- 1:23So without any further ado, guys, let's kick
- 1:25this show off.
- 1:26But before I do, I want to let
- 1:28you know that on 1.30 p.m.
- 1:30this Friday, that is April 17th, of course,
- 1:34we're going to have an Inspirations for Your
- 1:35Life show, but there's going to be a
- 1:37special surprise.
- 1:40Well, the surprise is that I'm going to
- 1:43give you the title of my book.
- 1:45There'll be a full dedication.
- 1:47So there'll be a shorter IFYL show, but
- 1:51a big part of it is going to
- 1:52be the launching of my new book.
- 1:53And I'm not sharing the title until that
- 1:55time.
- 1:55And then right after the title is announced,
- 1:58bam, within like 10 minutes or 15 minutes,
- 2:00the book will be available for sale in
- 2:03hardcover, Kindle, as well as, yes, Audible as
- 2:08well.
- 2:09All right.
- 2:10So guys, let's kick this off, all right.
- 2:13This is Inspirations for Your Life.
- 2:15It is Sunday.
- 2:17How Environment Shapes Everything.
- 2:20That's our granular.
- 2:22Series five, show 16, and episode number two.
- 2:25But the master topic of the week is
- 2:28actually changing direction.
- 2:32And what do I mean by actually changing
- 2:34direction?
- 2:35So this is a very important thing.
- 2:39A granular is how environment shapes everything, okay?
- 2:42And the master is this, how people actually
- 2:46change their direction without even realizing it.
- 2:50And I think that's a very important thing
- 2:53that many people don't realize.
- 2:55How people quietly change direction is not usually
- 2:58about one dramatic decision.
- 3:00It is about behavior, exposure, pressure, and the
- 3:03systems around them that shape outcomes over time.
- 3:07All right.
- 3:09So if you didn't know who I am
- 3:10by now, please allow me to introduce myself.
- 3:12I am John C.
- 3:14Morley, serial entrepreneur.
- 3:15I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 3:20host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and a
- 3:23passionate lifelong learner.
- 3:26And soon, this Friday, I will be a
- 3:29published author, yay.
- 3:31So tonight, I'm talking about something interesting.
- 3:35I'm breaking down one of the most underestimated
- 3:37forces in our human behavior.
- 3:40What is it?
- 3:41Environment.
- 3:42Most people think their results come from effort
- 3:45alone.
- 3:46Nope.
- 3:47Most people think they just need to try
- 3:49harder.
- 3:50They want to push more and longer.
- 3:53Nope.
- 3:54But in reality, what surrounds you is often
- 3:57doing more than your willpower, that you're wanting
- 4:03to know what that is.
- 4:04Your environment is not neutral.
- 4:07It is training you.
- 4:08It is shaping you.
- 4:09It is influencing what you notice, what you
- 4:12repeat, what you avoid, and what you become.
- 4:16Yep.
- 4:17A lot of people ignore it, but it's
- 4:18still programming them.
- 4:20That means your outcomes are not only connected
- 4:22to what you want.
- 4:24They are connected to what your environment keeps
- 4:27making easy, familiar, visible, and automatic for us.
- 4:34If you want to understand why people change
- 4:37direction without realizing it, you have to start
- 4:40with what surrounds them every single day.
- 4:44What is that?
- 4:44Their environment.
- 4:46All right, guys, let's kick this off.
- 4:48Number one, environment drives behavior automatically.
- 4:53I bet you didn't know that.
- 4:54Most people do not realize how much their
- 4:58actions are triggered by what is around them
- 5:00instead of what they consciously decide.
- 5:05Number two, you adjust to what surrounds you.
- 5:09Human beings are adaptive by nature, which means
- 5:13your standards, pace, and habits often shift to
- 5:17match, well, your environment.
- 5:20Number three, guys, input shape outputs.
- 5:24What you consume mentally, emotionally, and physically affects
- 5:28what you produce in every area of your
- 5:31life.
- 5:32Number four, exposure to certain ideas, behaviors, and
- 5:41expectations quietly changes what feels normal and possible.
- 5:48Number five, guys, you absorb what you see
- 5:51daily.
- 5:52What stays in front of you consistently starts
- 5:56shaping your beliefs, focus, and the decisions that
- 5:59you make.
- 6:00Number six, guys, surroundings influence decisions.
- 6:04Your space, your people, your routines, and your
- 6:08digital habits all affect what choices feel natural,
- 6:13comfortable.
- 6:14Number seven, people mirror their environment.
- 6:18Over time, most people begin to reflect the
- 6:21energy, standards, and patterns of what surrounds them.
- 6:25Number eight, context defines choices.
- 6:29The same person can act completely differently depending
- 6:32on the environment they are placed in.
- 6:35Number nine, guys, your space controls your actions.
- 6:38What is visible, accessible, or distracting in your
- 6:42environment often determines what you do next.
- 6:47Number 10, you rarely outperform your environment.
- 6:51If your setup keeps pulling you backward, effort
- 6:55alone usually will not be enough to overcome
- 6:58it for long to get you going forward.
- 7:02Number 11, signals guide behavior.
- 7:07The cues around you tell your brain what
- 7:10to focus on and what to ignore and
- 7:13what to repeat.
- 7:15Number 12, guys, noise creates confusion.
- 7:20Yes.
- 7:21Cluttered environments are a big problem, guys.
- 7:26Chaotic inputs and constant distraction reduce clarity and
- 7:31weaken our decision-making.
- 7:34You might say to me, John, why are
- 7:36we doing that?
- 7:37Well, I'll tell you why you're doing that.
- 7:38It's because you don't know that's actually a
- 7:42problem.
- 7:42You're not aware of how much that noise
- 7:46is preventing you from living a great life.
- 7:49Number 13, clarity comes from structure, structure.
- 7:54When your environment is organized with intention, your
- 8:00mind can focus faster and act with more
- 8:03precision.
- 8:05Number 14, guys, environment reduces friction.
- 8:09The right setup makes, well, good actions easier
- 8:14and lowers the resistance that normally slows your
- 8:18progress.
- 8:20Number 15, guys, design affects discipline.
- 8:24Yep.
- 8:24People often think discipline is purely internal, but
- 8:28external design strongly determines how easily discipline feels.
- 8:33That's important.
- 8:34Number 16, guys, systems reduce decision fatigue.
- 8:40When your environment supports routines and systems, you
- 8:45waste less mental energy deciding what to do.
- 8:49And that's an important thing, guys.
- 8:51That is definitely an important thing.
- 8:53Number 17, better setups create better results.
- 8:59Improvements in environment often create immediate improvements in
- 9:03consistency, focus, and output.
- 9:05Let's talk about one, a study environment.
- 9:07If you have a quiet study environment and
- 9:10maybe you have the option for headphones to
- 9:13allow you to listen to some music, that
- 9:15would be productivity music, or maybe you have
- 9:17some nice chairs or beanbag or whatever you
- 9:20have, and it gets you comfortable, well, that
- 9:23can tell the mind and body, hey, it's
- 9:25okay to relax.
- 9:26And yeah, we can learn when we're more
- 9:29relaxed.
- 9:30Number 18, inputs matter more than the effort.
- 9:34If the quality of your input is poor,
- 9:37working harder often means reinforcing bad patterns faster.
- 9:42So in the audio world, if we have
- 9:44bad inputs, we're going to get bad outputs.
- 9:46Now we can filter, we can change the
- 9:49different levels, but if the output is really
- 9:53bad, then we're going to run into a
- 9:57problem.
- 9:58And there's only so much of a window
- 10:00that we can adjust.
- 10:01Yes, we can adjust a lot, but if
- 10:03it's really terrible, it's not too much we
- 10:06can do because then we're going to lower
- 10:08one thing and we're going to raise our
- 10:10ceiling and then we're going to cause something
- 10:11else to be a problem.
- 10:13So that's a real issue.
- 10:15So reinforcing bad patterns is not good.
- 10:19Our inputs dictate our outputs.
- 10:21What you consume, number 19, shapes, direction, media,
- 10:25conversations, environments, and habits all put your thinking
- 10:29toward certain outcomes.
- 10:32That's pretty cool, isn't it?
- 10:34Number 20, guys, digital environment matters too.
- 10:38Your phone, your feed, your notifications, and your
- 10:42online exposure shape your mind just as much
- 10:45as your physical space, bet you didn't know
- 10:48that.
- 10:48Number 21, attention follows exposure.
- 10:54What you keep seeing starts capturing more of
- 11:02your focus, whether you intended it to or
- 11:05not.
- 11:07So we need to be mindful of that.
- 11:09Number 22, guys, you repeat what you see.
- 11:13Let me say that again.
- 11:15You repeat what you see.
- 11:18Repeated visual and emotional exposure increases the chance
- 11:21that certain behaviors become habits.
- 11:26So when our mind and body sees something,
- 11:31right, it changes how we operate.
- 11:35It changes it.
- 11:38Whether we're aware of it or not, our
- 11:41subconscious is like a sponge and it just
- 11:44picks it up.
- 11:45Almost like a pickup mic, right?
- 11:48Whether you want it to pick you up
- 11:50in the room or not, if it's on
- 11:52and you're within so many feet of it,
- 11:53it's picking you up and sending you out
- 11:55on the air or sending you to the
- 11:57auditorium or wherever or recording you, et cetera.
- 12:00Number 23, habits follow structure.
- 12:04The stronger the structure around a behavior, the
- 12:08more likely that behavior will stick.
- 12:14Now, sometimes structure is so strong, but the
- 12:17structure is strong around weak behaviors.
- 12:20But because there's a strong structure, when I
- 12:24say weak, I mean that it's a poor
- 12:26behavior.
- 12:26It's not a supporting one for the greater
- 12:29good of all concern, including ourselves.
- 12:31So that's important to acknowledge and understand.
- 12:34I think a lot of people today don't
- 12:37realize that their subconscious runs their mind and
- 12:41runs their body, okay?
- 12:44If you're not happy with your results, well,
- 12:47let's take a look at what your subconscious
- 12:50has been absorbing.
- 12:52I think that's a very important one that
- 12:55a lot of people just don't seem to
- 12:58get.
- 12:59And the reason they don't get it is
- 13:02because they're not aware of what is going
- 13:05on.
- 13:08They're not aware.
- 13:09And because they're not aware, they can't stop
- 13:15anything.
- 13:15And our subconscious mind, guys, just operates without
- 13:21our awareness.
- 13:23Our subconscious has its own awareness.
- 13:25But the beginning, when we start to understand
- 13:28and become aware of things, now we can
- 13:31intercept that coming into, well, our brain.
- 13:37And our brain takes the information, sends it
- 13:41around, including our heart, which by the way,
- 13:44our heart runs our body.
- 13:46Not just pumping.
- 13:47Our heart, without getting into this tonight, it
- 13:51has a very unique function.
- 13:53It can hold memory of certain things.
- 13:56It has the ability to control the energy.
- 13:59And you might say, John, where are you
- 14:01going on this?
- 14:02So everything in our world is energy.
- 14:04This microphone's energy, this water's energy, my cell
- 14:06phone, the laptop, the lights, the studio, everything
- 14:09here is energy.
- 14:11And so when our heart resonates in a
- 14:13certain energy, it goes together.
- 14:18Interesting story today, guys.
- 14:21There was this puppy, okay?
- 14:25And there was this big falcon bird.
- 14:30And this big falcon bird was outside, probably
- 14:34saw the puppy, and all of a sudden,
- 14:36this big falcon bird swoops in and picks
- 14:40up the puppy.
- 14:41I think the puppy was so scared.
- 14:45And you might've thought that the eagle was
- 14:47going after that puppy for his lunch or
- 14:50dinner.
- 14:50No.
- 14:51He took the puppy back to his nest
- 14:55where there were several babies of the eagle.
- 15:03And they were all like a family.
- 15:06It was something that the eagle picked up
- 15:09in the puppy.
- 15:11Maybe the eagle didn't have a father, so
- 15:14the eagle wanted to make sure that there
- 15:16was some way that the baby eagles could
- 15:19be taken care of.
- 15:19And it was a remarkable story because they
- 15:22would go and visit the puppy every couple
- 15:25of days, watching the puppy up there.
- 15:27And that falcon, that big bird, was not
- 15:32only making sure that it found something for
- 15:37her babies, but she would go and get
- 15:43food for the babies.
- 15:44You know what else she would do?
- 15:45She would get food for the puppy.
- 15:49That's a pretty amazing relationship.
- 15:51A puppy, a big, gigantic eagle.
- 15:57You can't make this up, but when I
- 15:59heard about the story, I was like, you
- 16:02know why that happened?
- 16:03I thought about it.
- 16:05It happened because of energy.
- 16:08If you've ever been around a dog before,
- 16:11hopefully you like dogs, pets.
- 16:12So I've learned this too.
- 16:15If you're around the animal and you are
- 16:17scared, the animal picks that up.
- 16:19If you are very calm and docile and
- 16:23has a good energy, the pet will come
- 16:27over to you.
- 16:30That's energy.
- 16:33That's remarkable.
- 16:34Number 24, guys, structure beats willpower.
- 16:39What is built into your environment usually wins
- 16:42over what you merely hope you will do.
- 16:46One of the things I talk about in
- 16:48my book is a certain type of structure
- 16:50with some techniques.
- 16:51And I never realized how some simple techniques
- 16:54with a pen, a paper could help you
- 16:58become successful, you know, very inexpensive.
- 17:01But you see, our mind doesn't judge whether
- 17:06we're using a $5,000 or $10,000
- 17:07laptop to stay organized or we're using a
- 17:10piece of paper.
- 17:13Our mind just cares that the data is
- 17:16organized.
- 17:17Our subconscious is very good at following patterns.
- 17:22The thing is, a lot of our patterns
- 17:23that are already set up for us, we
- 17:25don't like.
- 17:26And they're not for our greater good, but
- 17:29our subconscious still pays attention to it.
- 17:31Like I said, if you have that mic
- 17:32on or you have that speaker on, it's
- 17:35still going to play music or elicit a
- 17:38voice.
- 17:39Number 25, guys, people underestimate environment.
- 17:45Many people blame themselves for inconsistency without realizing
- 17:50how much their setup is working against them.
- 17:56This could be in studying.
- 17:58I know in very beginning days when I
- 18:01was starting to do, you know, voiceovers, I
- 18:05never realized how important it was not just
- 18:08to have the great lighting and stuff like
- 18:10that, but also to have an environment that
- 18:13I feel comfortable in having the right tools,
- 18:16obviously, but having them accessible in a certain
- 18:18way that feels natural makes production a lot
- 18:23easier and fun.
- 18:26Number 26, guys, remove friction to move faster.
- 18:31When the right action becomes easier to start,
- 18:36consistency rises naturally.
- 18:40Now, you might say, John, how do I
- 18:41know what the right action is?
- 18:44Great question.
- 18:45Go with your gut.
- 18:46Go with your energy.
- 18:48And as your energy is getting you to
- 18:49flow towards something, that will get you to
- 18:52make the change.
- 18:54Number 27, guys, add friction to stop bad
- 18:59patterns.
- 18:59Making negative behaviors less convenient is often more
- 19:03effective than relying on self-control alone.
- 19:06Let's talk about something.
- 19:08Let's say you're friends with somebody and this
- 19:11friend is abusing you for the services that
- 19:14you can provide.
- 19:15Let's say professional services that you charge for.
- 19:18But because he or she is a friend,
- 19:20you actually don't charge that person.
- 19:24Maybe what you have to do is limit
- 19:26the amount of time that you're willing to
- 19:29give that person.
- 19:29Hey, I'm happy to help you today.
- 19:31I can spare 20 minutes.
- 19:34And then if they start calling every day,
- 19:36I can spare an hour a week.
- 19:38So now if you did 20 minutes, that
- 19:40means you're willing to give 20 minutes for
- 19:42five days.
- 19:44If you said, I can only spend 30
- 19:46minutes, you say, I can only spend 15
- 19:47today.
- 19:48So now you're changing that trajectory.
- 19:50So I think when we start to learn
- 19:52about our value and we share that with
- 19:56others, it's not to be rude.
- 19:58It's to let people know that I value
- 20:01myself.
- 20:02I value you.
- 20:04Because I value my time, I expect you
- 20:06to value my time as well.
- 20:08So I'm just setting that precursor with you
- 20:10up front.
- 20:11Because if you don't understand it, and then
- 20:14you go over boundaries, you know what happens?
- 20:17Well, you can have anything from a virtual
- 20:21fight to physical fight to loss of respect.
- 20:24And I think these are big problems for
- 20:26a lot of people, but they don't necessarily
- 20:27want to say anything because they feel it
- 20:31might ruin the friendship.
- 20:32Ladies and gentlemen, newsflash here.
- 20:35If somebody is abusing you or constantly trying
- 20:40to, for lack of a better term, manipulate
- 20:44you, okay?
- 20:46I don't care if it's a client, I
- 20:48don't care if it's a neighbor.
- 20:49Oh, I'll take you to lunch.
- 20:50Oh, I'll take you to dinner.
- 20:52Oh, I've got candy for you.
- 20:54Oh, who cares, right?
- 20:59They're basically trying to get your services for
- 21:02the cost of a lunch.
- 21:04And you're worth much more than a lunch.
- 21:08So when we start to become aware of
- 21:12ourself and others and how these things are
- 21:15playing out, we can say, hey, I appreciate
- 21:19that you're offering me lunch.
- 21:21And I just want you to know that
- 21:23lunch is appreciated.
- 21:25And it's also not something I can count
- 21:27towards your bill.
- 21:31They're going to become a little cold.
- 21:33And they're either going to A, change their
- 21:36tune, or B, they'll be like, oh, okay.
- 21:39I had that happen to me with somebody
- 21:41many years ago.
- 21:42Do you know that person and I are
- 21:43no longer friends?
- 21:45There was never a friendship.
- 21:48There was an abusive manipulation.
- 21:52Because I was always taught to be respectful
- 21:55to people, especially my elders, I let it
- 21:58slip through my subconscious.
- 22:02My filters never picked it up because it
- 22:05appeared that I was being nice.
- 22:07I was being polite.
- 22:08But really, I was being disrespectful to myself.
- 22:16And that's a big problem.
- 22:20Disrespect is not just something that can happen
- 22:22to others, it can happen to yourself.
- 22:23And so this happened to me for a
- 22:25long time, that if we don't know how
- 22:28to respect somebody, we don't know how to
- 22:30do that.
- 22:33If we can't respect ourselves, we'll never respect
- 22:36another person, never.
- 22:39I mean, never, never, never, never, never, okay,
- 22:45never.
- 22:49So you can talk about kindness all day
- 22:51long.
- 22:52And kindness does not equal me being weak.
- 22:58But the minute kindness turns into a manipulation,
- 23:02then it's time to become firm with, I
- 23:08understand you need my services, and I offered
- 23:10to give you 15 minutes today.
- 23:12Well, it's gonna take longer, I understand, I'm
- 23:14able to give you 15 minutes, what happens
- 23:16after that?
- 23:16Well, then I'll start charging you in half
- 23:19hour or hour increments, my normally rate.
- 23:21How much is that?
- 23:23How many hours?
- 23:24Oh, it could be two to four hours.
- 23:26And I do expect payment via cash, check,
- 23:30a credit card at the end of the
- 23:32service.
- 23:33If we need to make a payment arrangement
- 23:35now, let's talk about that if you need
- 23:37to.
- 23:37How much is the bill gonna be?
- 23:39I don't know, between anywhere from 300 or
- 23:42$1,000.
- 23:42Well, that's a big range.
- 23:43Well, it depends on how many hours I'm
- 23:45here.
- 23:47Now, they get a lot more finicky about
- 23:50what they really need you for.
- 23:52They don't need you to hold the screw.
- 23:54They don't need you to change the batteries
- 23:55in the flashlight.
- 23:56They don't need you to hook up the
- 23:57cable box.
- 23:58They need you to do one thing or
- 24:00two things, because now they're paying you.
- 24:03You already value yourself.
- 24:04And once you value yourself, other people will
- 24:06start valuing you or they will just leave
- 24:08the situation.
- 24:10Number 28, change environment to change outcomes.
- 24:16When you alter the conditions around you, you
- 24:18often change the direction of your results.
- 24:20That could be furniture.
- 24:21That could be anything from the way the
- 24:25sound is, let's say, absorbed.
- 24:28It could be the type of lighting you
- 24:30have in your home or your office.
- 24:34It could be the type of chair you're
- 24:36sitting on, right?
- 24:38All these things play into our sense.
- 24:45See, hear, touch, taste, smell, feel, proprioception.
- 24:51For those of you who forgot what proprioception
- 24:53is, that's the ability to tell where a
- 24:56specific joint or part of our body is
- 24:58at any time, whether our eyes are open
- 25:00or our eyes are closed.
- 25:01I can tell you my hand's up here,
- 25:02my eyes are closed.
- 25:03Hands down here, my hand is down there.
- 25:05I can tell because of proprioception.
- 25:10Number 29, guys, external shifts create internal change.
- 25:15Changing what surrounds you can reshape how you
- 25:18think, feel, and respond over time.
- 25:22There is no rush to do this in
- 25:25five minutes or even to do it overnight.
- 25:28But many people push because they're like, oh,
- 25:31I got to get it done tonight.
- 25:32When you rush to get it done, I'll
- 25:35tell you something, you're probably going to have
- 25:36to redo it several times.
- 25:39So let's get it done right the first
- 25:41time, even if it's a little slower.
- 25:43Number 30, guys, control inputs, control results.
- 25:51If you want different outcomes, one of the
- 25:54fastest ways to get them is to become
- 25:57more intentional about what you allow around you.
- 26:00So I was talking to a friend of
- 26:02mine who we do breakfast with at the
- 26:04church.
- 26:05We do it once a month, a breakfast
- 26:06club.
- 26:07And he had one of these kind of
- 26:10like fancy little coffee pots you put on
- 26:12the stove from, it was actually not the
- 26:15one from Italy, but it was made, it
- 26:17was a knockoff made from the guy that
- 26:19originally made the more expensive one.
- 26:21So he puts the coffee in and puts
- 26:26the water in and tastes it and everything
- 26:28and he fills it up to the line.
- 26:30So how is it?
- 26:30He says, oh, it's terrible.
- 26:31He said, it's too watery.
- 26:32I said, I guess maybe it needs less
- 26:33water.
- 26:35And put less water in, it's only a
- 26:37second or third time.
- 26:38So by changing the way, so change can
- 26:41not only be the ingredient and ingredient is
- 26:43not just limited to food.
- 26:44It could be what we do or don't
- 26:46do, right?
- 26:47The action is also an ingredient.
- 26:50And just by altering one thing, something can
- 26:53shift.
- 26:53But if we kept putting that teapot together,
- 26:56that coffee pot together the same way, we
- 26:58would just have a mess.
- 27:04Okay.
- 27:05That's when things are live on the air,
- 27:06you just sneeze.
- 27:09So I have to tell you that knowing
- 27:13that you do the same thing over and
- 27:14over again, and if you expect different results,
- 27:17Einstein said, that's insanity.
- 27:19So don't do that.
- 27:20That's probably the biggest thing I want to
- 27:22tell you.
- 27:23And I want to say this in closing.
- 27:25Here is the real takeaway for this evening.
- 27:29Most people are trying to change their lives
- 27:31without changing what keeps shaping their lives every
- 27:34day.
- 27:34That is why they stay frustrated.
- 27:37That is why they stay inconsistent.
- 27:39That is why they keep making promises to
- 27:42themselves and then falling back into the same
- 27:44old pattern or loop.
- 27:47Because effort matters, but environment often decides whether
- 27:51that effort lasts.
- 27:53If you want better results, do not just
- 27:55ask what you need to do differently.
- 27:58Ask what around you needs to change.
- 28:02Ask what you keep seeing.
- 28:03Ask what keeps distracting you.
- 28:06Ask what keeps pulling you into the same
- 28:08patterns.
- 28:09Ask what needs to become easier.
- 28:12Ask what needs to become harder.
- 28:13Because the moment you become intentional about your
- 28:15environment, you stop leaving your direction to chance.
- 28:20You stop drifting, you stop reacting, you stop
- 28:23depending on willpower alone.
- 28:25And you begin building the setup that supports
- 28:28the version of you actually wanted to become
- 28:31forever.
- 28:32That is how people quietly change direction without
- 28:35realizing it.
- 28:36Not through one emotional moment, not through one
- 28:39speech, not through one promise, but through what
- 28:43surrounds them, shapes them, and trains them every
- 28:46single day.
