- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Week two of
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Husky season with Syracuse on the Horizon on Saturday
- 0:07Speaker 1: at twelve noon on Mike Christino joined by Jim Mora.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The Huskies want to zero. That's what you want to
- 0:14Speaker 1: be after your first week, and let's start their coach,
- 0:17Speaker 1: The first couple of minutes were a little jarring. You
- 0:20Speaker 1: got punched in the nose a little bit with the
- 0:23Speaker 1: punt snap that ended up on your five yard line,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and I can't think it stunned the stadium a little bit,
- 0:29Speaker 1: but the team seemed to bounce back pretty well after that.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Mike, our first twenty two plays, if
- 0:37Speaker 2: you combine offense, defense, and special teams, were not exactly
- 0:40Speaker 2: what we were looking for. We had four penalties, we
- 0:43Speaker 2: had a touchdown callback, we had a long or a
- 0:46Speaker 2: long kickoff return come back. You mentioned the snap, So
- 0:50Speaker 2: it didn't feel real good, especially as much emphasis as
- 0:53Speaker 2: we put on starting fast. But on the flip side,
- 0:57Speaker 2: nobody panicked, you know, and so there's something to be
- 0:59Speaker 2: learned from that, and we were able to just stay calm,
- 1:02Speaker 2: keep our composure, refocus, and then start to make some plays.
- 1:06Speaker 2: But that's certainly something that we cannot make a habit
- 1:09Speaker 2: and will not make a habit. A poor start like
- 1:11Speaker 2: that that can be devastating in a big game.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Well, obviously if you're playing somebody like this week on
- 1:18Speaker 1: the road and you have a bad start, that could
- 1:20Speaker 1: put you in a big hole.
- 1:21Speaker 3: The running game didn't get started early.
- 1:24Speaker 1: It looked as if everyone was trying to kind of
- 1:26Speaker 1: work together and get some cohesion going on that offensive line,
- 1:30Speaker 1: some new faces there. But as the game progressed, it
- 1:35Speaker 1: looked like you were getting holes opened, looks like your
- 1:38Speaker 1: runners were getting into that second level, and obviously you
- 1:41Speaker 1: broke a couple big ones.
- 1:42Speaker 2: What's interesting is that snap over the head of our
- 1:45Speaker 2: punter costs US forty two yards in rushing.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I don't figure that.
- 1:50Speaker 2: So we ran for three hundred yards, so we felt
- 1:53Speaker 2: good about that. I think we all kind of expected
- 1:56Speaker 2: to come out and maybe just be a little bit
- 1:57Speaker 2: more effective early, like you mentioned, but sometimes when you're
- 2:01Speaker 2: you're committing to the run and they know so, then
- 2:03Speaker 2: they're going to commit guys to stopping the run, and
- 2:06Speaker 2: it's just you know, sticking with it, doing your job
- 2:09Speaker 2: play after play and then counting on you know, one
- 2:12Speaker 2: of those ones that goes for three, all of a
- 2:13Speaker 2: sudden it goes for five, and it goes for seven,
- 2:15Speaker 2: then it breaks for seventy three. And that's kind of
- 2:18Speaker 2: how successful running teams are. And we've been able to
- 2:21Speaker 2: run the ball around here and we expect to be
- 2:23Speaker 2: able to continue to run the ball.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting that you really had you know, Cam
- 2:29Speaker 1: Edwards carried the ball six times. I'd love to see
- 2:34Speaker 1: you get them six carries in one hundred and fifteen
- 2:36Speaker 1: yards every week, so where and tear won't become a
- 2:39Speaker 1: factor of twelve games in. But you know, you got
- 2:43Speaker 1: a lot done without having to wear guys out in
- 2:46Speaker 1: that first week.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I thought, well, we've got a lot of guys on
- 2:50Speaker 2: offense certainly that we can put in the game and
- 2:52Speaker 2: have a lot of confidence that they're going to play at.
- 2:54Speaker 4: A high level.
- 2:55Speaker 2: You know, you talk about the running back room in particular,
- 2:58Speaker 2: You've got Cam and obviously you know Mel is such
- 3:01Speaker 2: a great player, and then and then Victor who scored
- 3:04Speaker 2: ten touchdowns a couple of years ago.
- 3:06Speaker 4: And then you saw Oliver and MJ come in there,
- 3:10Speaker 4: and you know.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So we feel like we're five or six deep at
- 3:13Speaker 2: running back and same thing at receivers. You know, there's
- 3:15Speaker 2: a lot of guys can go out there and make
- 3:16Speaker 2: plays for us tight end the same thing.
- 3:18Speaker 4: And so I think to your point is.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Being able to keep guys fresh, put rotate players through
- 3:26Speaker 2: and not having a drop off in production is always
- 3:28Speaker 2: going to help you as a football team and keep
- 3:31Speaker 2: guys you know, fresh and on point. And you know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: if you can put a Cam Edwards in the game
- 3:38Speaker 2: late when you've beat a team down a little bit,
- 3:40Speaker 2: he's going to break some runs for you that can
- 3:41Speaker 2: put a game away.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Got Jim Morris with us the Yukon Football Coaches Show,
- 3:46Speaker 1: Mike Chris Bino. We get together on Tuesday six pm
- 3:50Speaker 1: on the Yukon Sports Network. And speaking of that depth
- 3:54Speaker 1: the receiver corps, you got Jackson Harper will make five catches,
- 3:58Speaker 1: Skyler Bell obviously four big ones including the eighty two yarder,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and then Ramelo Murphy some new faces, Ty Bowman seven
- 4:07Speaker 1: catches between them. I just feel like when you have
- 4:10Speaker 1: that kind of talent that you can send out there,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you know, for sixty minutes. If I'm a defensive guy,
- 4:17Speaker 1: I'm thinking, man, these guys keep coming at us with
- 4:19Speaker 1: you know, in rows, and it can be a little
- 4:23Speaker 1: discouraging I think for the other defense.
- 4:25Speaker 3: If you can keep this kind of thing going.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a big if, and we have to we
- 4:29Speaker 2: have to keep it going. And it's a little bit
- 4:31Speaker 2: more comforting to the play caller Gordy that he doesn't
- 4:35Speaker 2: have to necessarily have specific guys in in order to
- 4:39Speaker 2: get the right play called, you know, and you didn't
- 4:41Speaker 2: even mention guys like Chris Parker, John Knyder and and
- 4:45Speaker 2: Shamar Porter. So with any of those guys in the game,
- 4:49Speaker 2: we feel confident that they can go out and make
- 4:51Speaker 2: plays for us. Now there's going to be different levels,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and there's going to be things that guys do a
- 4:56Speaker 2: little bit better than others, or maybe they have a
- 4:59Speaker 2: deficiency one thing, and so our job as coaches had
- 5:01Speaker 2: always put them in position them to do what they
- 5:03Speaker 2: do best so they can maximize their potential. But it
- 5:06Speaker 2: certainly is nice to have some depth at the skill positions.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Well, the team bounced back after the giving up that touchdown,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and they opening two minutes with twenty eight straight points
- 5:17Speaker 1: and then comes the final few minutes of the first half,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and I mentioned this on.
- 5:21Speaker 3: The air to Wayne Norman. My partner.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I said, hey, coach and the staff, they've been working
- 5:27Speaker 1: on this two minute thing every single day all summer long,
- 5:30Speaker 1: all spring, all spring.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I want to see what happens here, because you got
- 5:35Speaker 3: a big lead twenty eight ten.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, you could have coasted into the locker room with
- 5:39Speaker 1: that eighteen point advantage, but you took it down the
- 5:42Speaker 1: field and I think it was seventy yards in just
- 5:45Speaker 1: a couple of minutes and scored again to make it
- 5:48Speaker 1: thirty five to ten. At the break, it was seven
- 5:52Speaker 1: plays fifty two yards, And I thought that was kind
- 5:55Speaker 1: of significant, even in a game that was kind of
- 5:57Speaker 1: a blowout, a.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Blow yet, And I think that for us to be
- 6:02Speaker 2: able to get the practice in a game that we've
- 6:04Speaker 2: been you know, some of the situations we've been practicing
- 6:07Speaker 2: in practice, was really important, Mike, you know. So it
- 6:12Speaker 2: was important for us to do all we could on
- 6:14Speaker 2: defense to get the ball back for our offense so that.
- 6:16Speaker 4: We could try to execute a.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Two minute drive, you know, in a game where where
- 6:21Speaker 2: it really counted, and we were able to do that.
- 6:25Speaker 2: We gave them the ball back I think with less
- 6:27Speaker 2: than thirty seconds left again at the end of the
- 6:29Speaker 2: at the end of the half, so we accomplished our objective,
- 6:32Speaker 2: which was the score and not leave much time on
- 6:35Speaker 2: the clock for our offense.
- 6:36Speaker 3: So you know, really there was four series four changes.
- 6:40Speaker 2: That were our offense was on the ball twice and
- 6:42Speaker 2: our defense is on the field twice, and our defenses
- 6:44Speaker 2: on the field twice in the last minute and twenty
- 6:47Speaker 2: eight seconds, and we were able to get points up,
- 6:49Speaker 2: get a stop on defense and then they kneeled on it, so.
- 6:53Speaker 4: That that was effective for us.
- 6:54Speaker 2: But like you said, getting the chance to put it
- 6:58Speaker 2: into action all the things we've been working on was
- 7:00Speaker 2: really important for us.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and you got it done in fifty four seconds.
- 7:03Speaker 1: That drive by the way thirty five ten at halftime
- 7:06Speaker 1: in the final fifty nine thirteen, we.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Take a quick break. We're back. This is the Yukon
- 7:10Speaker 3: Football Coaches Show on Lear Field.
