Transcript
- 0:00Hello there. It's time for most things
- 0:03Kenobi. Hi everyone, Welcome to another
- 0:19episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and
- 0:23all things Star Wars. I'm your host, Leanne.
- 0:25And I'm your host, Lauren, and this week we're doing something
- 0:29a little different, but it's very fun.
- 0:31I I had fun putting together my list.
- 0:33Yeah, I did too. This is interesting.
- 0:36We're doing the seven Deadly Sins but assigning them to
- 0:41characters in Star Wars, and we're going to talk about why we
- 0:44chose them. Now, we don't know each other's
- 0:46list. We don't know who we chose.
- 0:47I'm sure we'll have overlaps because as I was going through
- 0:51these, there are multiple characters who could be all of
- 0:56these. Yes.
- 0:58And then I was trying to assign like lesser known or less less
- 1:02popular or less recognizable characters as some of these.
- 1:06And they were hard because they could be interchangeable.
- 1:09Because you know, when you're evil, you're just evil.
- 1:12Well, and a lot of like people who are quote UN quote bad guys
- 1:16have a lot of these characteristics.
- 1:18Like it's kind of they all kind of overlap a little bit is what
- 1:21I was starting to see. So shall we explain what the
- 1:26sins? Are like what's the kind of
- 1:28background of it? A little bit, yes, for sure.
- 1:31All right, so for those of you who don't know, according to
- 1:34Wikipedia, that's just the easiest.
- 1:37It was the least convoluted definition that I could find for
- 1:42this. Yes, this actually.
- 1:44Historically speaking, there are many variances of what these
- 1:48seven deadly sins are. Yes.
- 1:51I didn't realize that when we first started talking about it.
- 1:53It's like I wasn't like deeply familiar, but I'd heard of it,
- 1:56right. And then you started to read
- 1:58some of it to me like some of the history.
- 2:01And I was like, I had no idea it was this.
- 2:04There were this many variations of it.
- 2:06And so we're just going to do like a concise.
- 2:11Version of it and I think what is this based on?
- 2:13Is it like a Catholic thing or yeah, it's Christian, but there
- 2:17are multiple religions that have a variance of it.
- 2:21They're otherwise known as vices, or, you know, the
- 2:24cardinal sins, like the things you there.
- 2:26What it really is, is a group of behaviors that are more extreme.
- 2:30So you can be one of these. You can have characteristics of
- 2:34each of these sins or vices, but it's the extreme right is what
- 2:40makes them deadly. So if you go overboard with with
- 2:43any of like the base sin, then they're considered the like
- 2:47capital vice? Yes, that's what I remember
- 2:50researching also. And so we're just going to say
- 2:52this up front too. We're not discussing this in
- 2:55terms of like trying to promote any religious dogma it.
- 2:58We're thinking of it more as like mythology and philosophy
- 3:01and just kind of like taking a rubric and just kind of
- 3:04exploring that in a Star Wars environment.
- 3:07So 100%, yeah. OK, so according to Wikipedia,
- 3:11the Seven Deadly Sins, also known as the Capital Vices or
- 3:15Cardinal sins, is a grouping and classification of vices within
- 3:20Christian teachings. But like you said, it kind of
- 3:22shows up in other teachings as well.
- 3:25According to the standard list, they are pride, Greed, wrath,
- 3:32envy, Lust, Gluttony and Sloth. Which are contrary to the seven
- 3:38capital virtues, which we might do in another episode.
- 3:40Right. We kind of, yeah.
- 3:41Because when we were going through and doing the the
- 3:45capital vices, capital virtues came up and I started thinking
- 3:49about those. And so did you like, you started
- 3:51to see like the opposite. And so I think we may do like a
- 3:55Part 2 to this episode where we talk about the virtues.
- 3:59I think that would be fun because there's.
- 4:01What I kind of started to realize while making this list
- 4:04is there's not that many female baddies in Star Wars.
- 4:08No. Well, there's baddies, but not
- 4:13bad characters, right? Not evil because technically a
- 4:17baddie is like a badass, right? Is that what the kids say?
- 4:21Yeah, I guess maybe I'm showing my age.
- 4:25I don't know. They were definitely more male
- 4:28villains. Than for female villains, I'll
- 4:30say. And I'm sure the virtues.
- 4:32There are more females with virtues in Star Wars.
- 4:35It just clicked in my mind while I was doing research that kind
- 4:38of became apparent. So it also says these sins are
- 4:42often thought of to be abuses or excessive versions of one's
- 4:47natural faculties or passions. For example, Glutton abuses
- 4:51one's desire to eat. So like what you said.
- 4:54They're not. It's not just the act of doing
- 4:56it, it's the extremeness of these quote UN quote sins.
- 5:02Yeah, any of these in excess for an excessive period of time, I
- 5:05would say. Yes.
- 5:06What I did is I then looked through the definition of each
- 5:11sin and just kind of like read more of the detail and allowed
- 5:15the character to kind of come to mind for me instead of.
- 5:19Trying to force a character in. So that's the way I approached
- 5:23it. About how did you how did you
- 5:25come up with your list? Well, I I did something similar.
- 5:29I had the first person that came to mind.
- 5:33I wrote him down and then I tried to think who outside the
- 5:37box also fits this. So I kind of have one or two for
- 5:40each of these. Yeah, I do too.
- 5:42I have like a primary person and then some others.
- 5:45Yeah, I want to say right up front, Palpatine Invader could
- 5:49be all of these. Yes, I had that, except for
- 5:54sloth because. Sloth was hard.
- 5:57Sloth is definitely the hardest one, especially in Star Wars,
- 6:00because everyone's so motivated. Yeah, even the bad, bad guys
- 6:04quote, UN quote, have energy to do stuff.
- 6:07So. Yes, Yeah, I know that was
- 6:09interesting. Yeah, Sloth was the hardest.
- 6:12I think my most prominent character is Palpatine.
- 6:16He's on here three times, could be on here 7 times so.
- 6:21But wherever Palpatine is, I picked another because he's just
- 6:26the embodiment of the seven vices.
- 6:28He's just terrible. Exactly.
- 6:31So do you want to? Shall we start with pride?
- 6:34Do you want to read the definition of pride?
- 6:36So pride is actually very interesting.
- 6:39It's considered the original and the worst of the seven deadly
- 6:43sins on almost every list and is considered the most demonic.
- 6:49Let that sit in. Oh my God.
- 6:51Demonic, Yeah and pride has been labeled the mother of all sins
- 6:56and has been deemed the devil's most essential traits.
- 7:00Oh my God. Okay.
- 7:03But if you think about it, it says you're the position in
- 7:05which the ego and the self are directly opposed to chastity.
- 7:10You know, the the things that makes one humble.
- 7:15There's a lot of, you know, spiritual talk, but pride is
- 7:18basically it goes before destruction, a haughty spirit
- 7:23before the fall. Pride blinds, causes foolish
- 7:26actions against common sense. It is described as hubris how
- 7:32leaders with great power over many years become more and more
- 7:35irrationally selfconfident and contemptuous of advice, leading
- 7:40them to act impulsively. So interesting, I know.
- 7:44So with that in mind, I have chosen Anakin.
- 7:49He's my #2. Is he your number two?
- 7:53I am. Listen, and I don't want to say
- 7:54Vader. I want to say Anakin.
- 7:56Yes. Yes.
- 7:58Based on that definition, where advice is no longer a thing,
- 8:05you're too selfconfident. Like irrationally.
- 8:07So you act impulsively. That's Anakin to me.
- 8:11It is also Vader. But pride is what led him to
- 8:15fall into the other sins that we're going to talk about.
- 8:18So that's why he's my number one for pride.
- 8:22Yeah, I put Grievous. I have Grievous on this list.
- 8:28I have two others that are really tied for the for grievous
- 8:31but grievous kid of mine first, because he's so yes.
- 8:37Like, obviously prideful, always talking about how he's superior
- 8:42and yes. And of course doesn't want to
- 8:45listen to anybody telling him what to do or giving him any
- 8:48advice whatsoever. He he's just, he doesn't want to
- 8:52hear it, basically. Yeah, you know who my #2 is, and
- 8:55I'm still unsure about this. Saguerrera.
- 9:01Oh, yeah. Oh, I think that absolutely
- 9:03makes sense, yes. He doesn't want to hear it from
- 9:07anyone else. It's exactly the same.
- 9:09Yes, he's driven by impulse a lot of the times he does think
- 9:12about things, but he's driven by like personal gain, almost
- 9:16personal vendettas. He's proud of what he's done.
- 9:20And what he's done is not great a lot.
- 9:22And he comes from a place of, you know, somebody owes me
- 9:27something because this happened and while it's kind of clouded,
- 9:31you know, as like I'm doing it for the greater good, it's
- 9:35driven a lot by pride, self-confidence misplaced
- 9:40almost. Refuses to accept any second
- 9:43guesses. You know, like he he does a
- 9:45thing and he just, that was what I had to do and doesn't stop to
- 9:50question whether or not it was right or wrong.
- 9:52Yes, So I put him down. Yeah, I completely agree with
- 9:55that. I hate to do that because his
- 9:58character's so interesting and I want to root for him in a way.
- 10:03Yes, I think that's the the the so Guerrera trap, right?
- 10:07Because, right? You want him to do good, like
- 10:11because he's strong and he's a really interesting character,
- 10:14but it's hard to root for him because he's he.
- 10:19Exists in the Gray area a lot where you can kind of be like,
- 10:24ooh, I don't think that was actually a good thing that you
- 10:26just did, right? Right.
- 10:29That's kind of why I enjoy him. I think he's he's he's kind of
- 10:35like an unreliable narrator because he believes the the
- 10:38bullshit he tells himself absolutely.
- 10:42He believes it so strongly, we want to believe it.
- 10:45But then if you start to think about it, you're like, no, this
- 10:48is wrong about this ain't right. Yeah, No.
- 10:51Yeah. Anyway, that's that's pride for
- 10:54me. My #2 besides, like Anakin is
- 10:57really. I'm tied between chronic and
- 11:00Tarkin. OK, I also thought of them, but
- 11:04I put them in a different actually, I don't have Tarkin on
- 11:06my list anywhere, but I do have Chronic.
- 11:09Kronick could also kind of be all of this.
- 11:13I have him in a few spots, but Kronick is so prideful the way
- 11:17he and Tarkin talk to each other.
- 11:20And like Tarkin, his pride in the Clone Wars is you just want
- 11:25to punch him, right? It's infuriating.
- 11:27It's it's like you're on my last nerve with this shit.
- 11:31Shut up. You know?
- 11:32Exactly. But he also is someone who
- 11:34believes his own bullshit. Yes, absolutely.
- 11:40I love it. Those are good choices.
- 11:43Pride. Think about this.
- 11:44If this is the worst of the worst, these people need to
- 11:48reevaluate their lives. Grievous.
- 11:54They're too prideful. The only human part of Grievous
- 11:57now is his brain, I think. Right, that's it.
- 12:00And it chose pride. And it's part I think no.
- 12:05Shall we do greed? Shall we move on?
- 12:08Yeah. Greed is next.
- 12:09Yes. OK, so the definition I see for
- 12:12greed or avarice is an insatiable desire for material
- 12:17gain, be it food, money, land, or animate inanimate possessions
- 12:22or social values such as status or power.
- 12:26Greed has been identified as undesirable throughout known
- 12:30history because it creates behavior conflict between
- 12:33personal and social goals. Yes, yes.
- 12:38So there could be a lot of people in this one.
- 12:41Yes, my number one for greed is Sidious.
- 12:45Honestly. Same.
- 12:46I have him. Yep.
- 12:48He's my number one for power. His greed for power.
- 12:51Yes, there is nothing that satisfies him.
- 12:55Except for that constant striving for more.
- 13:00Like even when he gets more, it's not enough.
- 13:02So he has to get more and and insane.
- 13:04He's insatiable, and that is one of the words here, an insatiable
- 13:08desire that means that it can never be satisfied.
- 13:11And that to me is Sidious completely, although I do have
- 13:14Dooku on here as well. But like, really, Sidious made
- 13:19Dooku, so you know, they can go together.
- 13:23So Sidious was mine, obviously. My second one, I I thought this
- 13:27was a little interesting and I I think of greed in the terms of
- 13:31bounty hunters. So I put CAD Bane down because
- 13:34he has only one goal and that's to get whatever he's working
- 13:38for. He wants the money, he wants the
- 13:40title. So I put CAD down.
- 13:43That's awesome. I love that now he's nowhere
- 13:45near as insatiable as Palpatine slash Sidious.
- 13:49He Sidious is like the top of the top for greed.
- 13:53Yeah, I mean, but in in like a lower tier CAD Bane is on there.
- 13:58He'll go to any length to get what he thinks he deserves or
- 14:01what the payment is. Yeah, the payment is never
- 14:04enough. It it and like he never wants
- 14:08anything else. He just wants to do that, you
- 14:11know? It's like there is nothing that
- 14:13could tempt him to let go of. He's like a dog with a bone,
- 14:17right? Like once he has a bounty he's
- 14:20going after. You're not gonna get him to stop
- 14:23until he's done his job. You know, it's yes, that's a
- 14:26good choice. That was very interesting.
- 14:29Shall we move on to wrath? Yes.
- 14:31And now just say I'm there's a lot of people here at my house,
- 14:34so you'll probably hear a lot of background coming and going and
- 14:37like the air conditioner's going because it's 100 degrees.
- 14:39So sorry for the noise on my end of the recording this time
- 14:43around Life, Yeah. Alright, so wrath.
- 14:49Wrath can be defined as uncontrolled feelings of anger,
- 14:53rage, and hatred. Wrath often reveals itself in
- 14:57the wish to seek vengeance. So this is beyond like being
- 15:01angry. This is beyond feeling like a
- 15:05normal emotion. Anger is a normal human emotion.
- 15:09This is rage, hatred, vengeance, excessive punishment.
- 15:14So that to me is 110% Mr. Darth Vader.
- 15:20Yes, as we saw the Kenobi series, he's very distracted by
- 15:25his need for vengeance. I mean the quote here in the
- 15:30definition. If anger reaches the point of
- 15:32deliberate desire to kill or seriously wound a neighbor, it
- 15:37is gravely against charity and thus a mortal sin.
- 15:41Yeah, so. I mean, he's just killing people
- 15:44for show in the Kenobi Show to draw Kenobi out, yeah.
- 15:49And it's all based in his desire to punish Obi Wan for what
- 15:53happened and. You know who else you could be
- 15:56describing with all of this is Mall.
- 15:59He's my second on the list because he lives in Wrath.
- 16:08Dude, Vader and mall were both renegading at the same time.
- 16:11They could have joined the forces and gone after Obi went
- 16:14together. Well don't forget mall has said
- 16:17I think it was in Rebels. When I think is it Ezra that
- 16:21asked him who Vader is or who and and and mall says who I
- 16:25should have been. I'm pretty sure that's what Mall
- 16:28says and he's mad that he didn't get to be the main like, killer
- 16:34for Sidious. I know it got replaced multiple
- 16:38times. I mean correct me if I'm wrong,
- 16:40but I'm pretty sure that was Rebels.
- 16:41Somebody asked him and he's he was all like self loathing and
- 16:44stuff. I I I see him in my mind in that
- 16:46Cape with the hood up, and he said who I should have been.
- 16:49I feel like we have a listener out there who would probably
- 16:52know better than I would. But yeah, you out there, Kevin.
- 16:54Let me know. Kevin, we know.
- 16:57You know, let me know Rebecca too.
- 17:01For Wrath I have Kylo Red Ohh yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 17:07Yes, because to me he is powerful.
- 17:10But he's so angry and like, so like he hates Luke so much that
- 17:16he becomes like mall where he's too singleminded, where he can't
- 17:20even focus because he's so mad. When I when I was trying to
- 17:24think like outside the box, like he was like, that was the first
- 17:26person I thought of was Kylo because of his, again, like an
- 17:30insatiable desire to create pain.
- 17:34Yeah. Think about in The Last Jedi
- 17:36when him and the the giant at ATS and they're all lined up in
- 17:41front of Luke who's just standing there and create and
- 17:43he's like fire. Kill him and he's just like
- 17:46losing his fucking mind. He's like, spitting.
- 17:48He's so angry. First of all, amazing
- 17:51performance. Adam Driver once again, because
- 17:53in that moment, holy shit. Terrified of Kylo Ren.
- 17:59Adam Driver, It was just that's wrath, dude.
- 18:03That's unhinged. So envy is next.
- 18:09Is that right? Envy is an emotion which occurs
- 18:14when a person lacks another's quality, skill, achievement or
- 18:18possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked
- 18:23it so. It's wanting.
- 18:27It's like a mixture of not just envy, but like jealousy as well.
- 18:31So it's like you want it, and if you can't have it, you don't
- 18:34want anyone else to have it either, correct?
- 18:38So who do you have? I have Cyril.
- 18:42Interesting. Because he is so preoccupied
- 18:49with even like there's a bit of there's an obsession with
- 18:54Cassian. There's that moment where he's
- 18:57like, sitting in this bedroom just looking at Cassian's
- 19:00hologram, because this is the man who, like, ruined him.
- 19:03But he also, it's like, it's almost a little bit envious to
- 19:07me. Not just like an obsession with
- 19:09wanting to catch him, but like, because he has some sort of
- 19:12command in his life, even though that's a misconception.
- 19:15Because Cassian doesn't. But that's how Cyril kind of
- 19:17sees him. He hates that there's a person
- 19:20snubbing their nose, you know, at the Empire.
- 19:23I don't know. I just.
- 19:24And you see him sitting at his desk and being insignificant,
- 19:28you know, and like, oh, I just, yeah, yeah.
- 19:31He sits and stares at Cassie. And I can almost hear him
- 19:36thinking, What makes this guy so great?
- 19:39Yes. Oh my God.
- 19:40Yes. Yes, absolutely.
- 19:43Why does everybody want to? What's with this guy?
- 19:47Why can't I be this guy? How come he can command a bunch
- 19:51of rebels to do El Donny and I can't even keep my job?
- 19:56Yeah, like that. That breeds all the other, all
- 20:01these other vices. Like when you fall, when you
- 20:03start falling into that trap. So for envy, I have Kylo Ren.
- 20:08Oh it, Yeah. Just because, I mean, he wants
- 20:12to be Vader and can't. He wants he doesn't want to be
- 20:15his father, and he hates that he is.
- 20:19Deep down inside, he doesn't want to be.
- 20:24I mean he wants to have all of that power and prestige and have
- 20:28a name that like that precedes him, you know, And he's just
- 20:33falls short every single time because there is good in him,
- 20:36which we end up seeing. There's a lot of envy there,
- 20:39envy of his, even the Resistance, they're together and
- 20:43he can't keep it together and he's got.
- 20:46I don't know. He's a mess, and I think a lot
- 20:48of it is based in envy when he is in the role of Kylo Ren.
- 20:52I think that's true because when you're envying other people,
- 20:55you're not even focused on yourself.
- 20:58Exactly. How could you possibly improve
- 21:01when all you want is what's over there instead of making what you
- 21:04can out of what you have here? And his anger was so displaced
- 21:08onto Luke and then Ray. Like learning from Luke?
- 21:12Yeah, it just created this shit show in his head.
- 21:16He was so upset and envious that Ray had Luke and Anakin's
- 21:22lightsaber and he thought he deserved it.
- 21:25Yeah, and again, in spring rage like that belongs to me, you
- 21:29know? Yeah, like he wanted these
- 21:32things and he always fell short. And he hated Ray for like,
- 21:37taking what he thought he deserved.
- 21:39It's fucking crazy, dude. I'm so glad Ben Solo prevailed,
- 21:43because I also have. Who?
- 21:48Go ahead, you go ahead. I was gonna say Cranic.
- 21:53Yes, Cranic was another one. I had on this my list.
- 21:57He's just, he's just envious of everyone around him.
- 21:59He same reasons he wants to be closer to Vader, closer to
- 22:05Sidious. He wants Tarkin out of the way.
- 22:08He wants his. Comeuppance.
- 22:10He wants to be known as that worked because of me.
- 22:13Are you are you gonna make sure everyone knows it's me?
- 22:17Because, you know, and he, he just wants, wants, wants and
- 22:20doesn't. Yeah, I do think Pride and Envy
- 22:23go together very well. They do.
- 22:25They do, and Frenick makes a lot of sense.
- 22:27With Dad, I had MAF Gideon as Envy.
- 22:31That's an that's an excellent one.
- 22:33I didn't even think of him. That's an excellent one, because
- 22:36he's constantly, I feel like he's a bit obsessed with the
- 22:41dark Saber and Mandalorians, and it's like, why?
- 22:46Not to crush them, but to like, possess what they have to like
- 22:51take what they have for himself, like to want the dark Saber and
- 22:56to want to like learn about the Mandalorians so that he can.
- 23:01I don't know, there was just something about it that's more
- 23:03than just like an A member of the Empire trying to wipe out
- 23:06the the Mandalorians. It was like a person trying to
- 23:10like cultural appropriation is kind of what it felt like with
- 23:13him. Yeah, totally.
- 23:15Yeah. Yeah, that's a good one.
- 23:16I didn't think of him. I had Tim Carlo, which is the
- 23:19boyfriend, the ex-boyfriend of Bix.
- 23:21Oh yeah. Absolutely, for the obvious
- 23:24reasons. I mean, yeah, so insecure.
- 23:27Yeah. I mean, wouldn't you be insecure
- 23:30if your girlfriend was talking to D?
- 23:33150% I'd be worried, sorry. Tim with two M's, but you're on
- 23:41the list with Envy. Like I said before, he's a lower
- 23:45tier envy compared to like Kylo and Cranic and and MOF Gideon
- 23:50and yeah, but still, he's. On there, he really makes sense.
- 23:55He lost his life because of it. Yes, he did.
- 23:57It was so actually I felt kind of sorry for him.
- 24:01He didn't realize he was playing with fire.
- 24:03Like he just was so naive. OK, the next one is lust.
- 24:09This is it. Interesting, because I think a
- 24:11lot of people think of lust as one thing, but it means a lot
- 24:15more, yes? Lush, Lush is different.
- 24:20Lush is different. Lust or lechery is intense,
- 24:27longing, so hard period. After that it is usually thought
- 24:33of as intense or unbridled sexual desire, which may lead to
- 24:36other things. Oftentimes it could mean other
- 24:39forms of unbridled desires, such as money or power.
- 24:44Lust is generally thought of as the least serious capital sin.
- 24:47I would like to know why. Yeah, it's kind of borderline
- 24:50envy. Yeah, Thomas Aquinas considers
- 24:54it an abuse of a faculty that humans share with animals and
- 24:58sins of the flesh, which are less grievous than spiritual
- 25:01sins. OK, thanks Thomas.
- 25:03But like it's on this list for a reason.
- 25:06Well, and something I read said lust is also you have something
- 25:10and you want more of what you already have.
- 25:14So it's not even just like I just really want stuff.
- 25:17It's like you already have it and it's not satisfying you like
- 25:20you need more. Yeah, it becomes an obsession.
- 25:23It's an obsession of whatever, you know. dot dot, dot.
- 25:27My only person on this list is Sidious.
- 25:30Interesting. I have Anakin.
- 25:33Do you? Well, they hand in hand, peas in
- 25:37a pod. Peas in a pod, not an escape
- 25:43pod. I think of that now.
- 25:45Instead of an actual Peapod, I think of escape pods.
- 25:51You know you're obsessed with Star Wars.
- 25:53Exactly. Obiwan even says your lust for
- 25:56power has already done that. You know, like I and Anakin says
- 26:01I want more and I know I shouldn't.
- 26:04Yes, yes, yes. And that's different than greed.
- 26:09It is, yeah. That to me is like a sign of
- 26:12lust. But specifically because he has
- 26:15power. He is the most powerful Jedi,
- 26:18apparently, so I've been told. I mean, but he wanted to stop
- 26:23death, yeah. And even if that was possible,
- 26:27would that even be enough for him?
- 26:30No, he'd find another. He'd find another reason to be.
- 26:33It's like treating a symptom right instead of treating the.
- 26:37So it's like that fear of loss is still going to be there.
- 26:40Yeah. So, yeah.
- 26:43And I also had thron on there. Oh my goodness, yes, yes.
- 26:49But his is so. If you compare it to Sidious and
- 26:53Anakin, who are very obvious with it, right Thron is like the
- 26:58cool, calm undercurrent that's always lusting for more.
- 27:02But it's not so outwardly apparent because he enjoys the
- 27:06process, he. Does.
- 27:08He's fucking crazy, but we love him for it.
- 27:12He reminds me of like, if you're in school and there's like a
- 27:15genius kid in class who's just bored all the time, he's smarter
- 27:20than the teacher. Oh my God, that's perfect.
- 27:24That's thron to me. He's back.
- 27:27He's in the back of the class, tapping his pencil, going.
- 27:30Can we move on, please? Yeah, I knew this.
- 27:33I knew this four years ago. Let me teach the class, yes.
- 27:39What's interesting about Thron is that he doesn't exude like
- 27:44Wrath or Yes. Envy all that much he has a
- 27:48good. Self-control button that he
- 27:52presses, where the other ones don't even acknowledge that they
- 27:56have any self-control, they just let it fly.
- 27:59Yes, he's not emotional. And that's what makes Thrawn
- 28:02frightening. I agree.
- 28:04It's totally scary when a person is angry or like threatening you
- 28:10while not screaming at you. That is to me.
- 28:14I actually wrote this in one of my fix that's I'm like releasing
- 28:18right now. The cast in deliberately chooses
- 28:20not to yell because people stop listening when you yell.
- 28:23Absolutely. It's way more effective to keep
- 28:27them guessing and wondering and keep that fear going than to
- 28:31have an outward display of, like, anger or yes, any of these
- 28:35things we've talked about. That to me is throng like in a
- 28:38nutshell. Yeah.
- 28:41Do you ever hear him like in Rebels, at least?
- 28:44Because I don't remember in the books.
- 28:45I don't think he ever raises his voice, I don't think.
- 28:47He's ever, ever shown a lack of control. self-control.
- 28:51Yeah, ever. Like there's no cracks.
- 28:54Ever. It's crazy.
- 28:56But if it is, it's internal. He's thought it or experienced
- 29:00it and then told himself don't show it.
- 29:04He's a thinker, not a displayer. OK, so we are up to gluttony.
- 29:11So gluttony is Latin for like to gulp down or swallow, and it
- 29:19means overindulgence and overconsumption of food or drink
- 29:23specifically. So it is very specific to
- 29:26actually ingesting things. I had trouble with this.
- 29:30I was going to say I was pretty sure we have the same person or
- 29:32character for this. Well, I took it more
- 29:35symbolically. Oh, OK.
- 29:38I mean, if we're talking about ingestion, ingesting, then we
- 29:42probably have the same person, but if we talk about it in a
- 29:45more symbolic sense, I have a different answer.
- 29:48So mine is Java, obviously. Same, same, same, same.
- 29:53I mean, he is excessively gluttonous.
- 29:56Yeah, I guess the huts in general are just consumers of
- 30:01lives, even they'll just they have no problem taking slaves
- 30:07and eating. Throwing them away.
- 30:10Yes, exactly. Like you said, it's not they
- 30:13are. They're overtly gluttonous where
- 30:15you see them like eating constantly.
- 30:17Job is always drinking and belching and all this but.
- 30:20Then smoking and whatever, he's just a he's those are all vices
- 30:24that he over. He overdoes, yes.
- 30:27And they they've said to that originally job at the Hut was
- 30:31supposed to be a man and then was supposed to have like a
- 30:35disease that turned him into this thing.
- 30:38But then they kind of changed it so that huts were a species.
- 30:42So they're like giant space slugs, basically.
- 30:44But like, yeah, like, I think it's very interesting.
- 30:49They're always just completely overindulging and they always
- 30:52have like girls in bikinis all over the place and.
- 30:57It's like. The embodiment of all the other
- 31:00sins, but like externally and going overboard with all of
- 31:03them? Yes.
- 31:05Did you have a nontraditional? I did.
- 31:09I had the Empire as a whole. They.
- 31:13Swallow entire communities. They discard entire planets.
- 31:19They pillage for minerals and things they can use and then
- 31:24discard it. They eat up their own people and
- 31:27discard them. They just swallow their own
- 31:31whole, and they always want more.
- 31:33They're never satisfied. So as a symbolic I have the
- 31:38Empire I. Love the Luttons?
- 31:41I think that's brilliant and 100% spot on.
- 31:44Thanks. I just wrote the Empire.
- 31:47That's all I wrote. I mean, it's so big and so
- 31:50sprawling, and it just keeps growing because it keeps
- 31:53consuming. And yeah, yeah, with no
- 31:56consideration to how much they're abusing their own, you
- 32:01know, people. It's think of Jetta, yeah.
- 32:05That was a very gluttonous what they were doing, they were
- 32:09harming not just the planet, they were.
- 32:12This is just one example we could go on for like an unknown
- 32:16list of planets. They've done this to where they
- 32:18just pillage, take what they want, consume what they.
- 32:23Are after and then either blow it up, leave it for dead,
- 32:28communities are destroyed, they just don't care.
- 32:31And then they move on to the next one where they pillage,
- 32:34consume, discard, repeat. It's in, it's on, Canary in and
- 32:40or. And I forget the name of the
- 32:42planet. That's in the Kenobi series,
- 32:44where Obiwan says this used to be fields with families and
- 32:48farms. And now look what the Empire has
- 32:50done to it. I mean, it's yeah, I think
- 32:52that's a really brilliant observation.
- 32:53The Asoka book also references a a planet that's just being
- 32:58completely wasted by overconsumption by the Empire
- 33:02for one resource or another. It's so depressing.
- 33:07So they're they're gluttonous bitches, if I do say so myself.
- 33:06It's. And last but definitely not
- 33:19least. We have sloth, and this was my
- 33:21hardest one, because like we said, there aren't a lot of
- 33:26excessively lazy individuals, but the actual definition is
- 33:33sloth. Also called without care, refers
- 33:37to a peculiar jumble of notions dating from antiquity and
- 33:40including mental, spiritual, pathological, and physical
- 33:43states. It may also be defined as an
- 33:46absence of interest or habitual disinclination to exertion.
- 33:50Obviously it goes on to like boredom, rancor, apathy,
- 33:55passivity, laziness, indolence. The words go on and on.
- 34:02It says here, Unlike the other seven deadly sins, which are
- 34:04sins of committing immorality, sloth is a sin of omitting
- 34:07responsibilities. That's so fucking smart.
- 34:11It is. It is.
- 34:13It's a tricky 1 because everyone has responsibilities in Star
- 34:17Wars and they're very attached to them.
- 34:19The characters we know have a very strong sense of drive, even
- 34:22if it's evil or good. So sloth was very hard for me,
- 34:28but if you think of it from like omitting responsibility that
- 34:31gives you another like lens to use that then I can think of
- 34:37more like I have. I have people written down and I
- 34:40do think it's it's accurate, but using that definition I feel
- 34:44like it's more accurate now what I what I picked.
- 34:47Who do you have? Who do you have?
- 34:49I have two and they're both from AND.
- 34:50Or I have Cyril's boss from and OR basically tells them like
- 34:59like, let's just sweep this under the rug, shall we?
- 35:02And the prison guards from Narkina 5.
- 35:07That is so good that gave. That's a double snap of the
- 35:10fingers for them. That is 2 snaps worthy.
- 35:15That's a good one because they are doing their job, but they
- 35:19kind of don't. They don't give a shit,
- 35:21basically, about they they enjoy inflicting pain and keeping the
- 35:26prisoners doing what they're told.
- 35:28Yeah, but they don't have a reason.
- 35:32Yeah, It's like they're doing it because it's their job, not
- 35:35because they love the Empire, not because they care about
- 35:37anything, really. Right.
- 35:40Like, yeah. Any Stormtrooper, I guess could
- 35:44be, yes, unless you're Finn. Unless you're Finn.
- 35:47We love Finn in this house. Yes, that's interesting because
- 35:53you're spot on. Who did you have?
- 35:56I just had Jabba because he's awful.
- 35:59He is though, like he is. And I don't mean just lazy,
- 36:03which he is, He has no regard. He doesn't stand for anything
- 36:08one way or another. Yeah, no, except consuming.
- 36:13Yes. He takes no responsibility for
- 36:15anything. It's always somebody else who
- 36:17wronged him and This is why it's happening.
- 36:19Yeah, it's what he wants and it has nothing to do with a larger
- 36:22community. It's very singleminded for sure.
- 36:25Lack of any feeling for the world, for people in it, or for
- 36:28the self. That's also part of this
- 36:30definition. And that's pretty much Java,
- 36:32yeah. Yeah, or any Stormtrooper or the
- 36:35Narcania guards or. Oh my God.
- 36:39It actually could go on really good.
- 36:42It really good. Because I think especially once
- 36:45the Empire starts up, you see people and this makes sense,
- 36:48like it's it's, you know, I would probably be one of these
- 36:51people where you're too afraid to stand up for what's right.
- 36:54You're just kind of like blend into the background and try to
- 36:56put your head down and live your life, which is like Ferrix,
- 36:59right? Like this is the whole thing.
- 37:00Marva was saying. He's As soon as the Empire
- 37:04closes the ship and pulls away, we forget they exist and we go
- 37:07back to our lives and we can't do that anymore.
- 37:11That's really. Yep, People think of sloth as a
- 37:13lazy person who never gets out of bed or whatever.
- 37:16But I really think it's like, I don't know, like a lack of care.
- 37:20Like what you said. Lacking care or responsibility.
- 37:23Yes, exactly. That's really interesting.
- 37:27There is also a part of this definition is sloth gives rise
- 37:32to boredom, apathy. Testivity or sluggish mentation
- 37:36and that could be right in there with what Marva's trying to not
- 37:40allow or to remind them. Don't get into this like
- 37:43passive. State.
- 37:45Yes, that's awesome. I love it though.
- 37:47That's that was hard. But I think this is actually one
- 37:50of the more fascinating ones, honestly.
- 37:52Yeah, I guess this could be its own deep dive.
- 37:55And then when you think of the virtues, which we we have to do
- 37:58an episode on this because yeah, they'll all be Obi Wan.
- 38:03Yes, actually, there, that's the episode.
- 38:08Just like Sidious is all of the seven Deadly Sins, Obi Wan
- 38:11Kenobi is all of the seven capital virtues.
- 38:18Is one of the virtues having fabulous hair?
- 38:20Yes. Oh boy, Next week's episode we
- 38:30are talking all things Asoka because the show is debuting.
- 38:36It's 10 O Tuesday or Ton O Tuesday.
- 38:38However you choose to pronounce your last name and our episode
- 38:43drops on a Tuesday, so it's going to be Ton O Tuesday on
- 38:47most things Kenobi. We're going to discuss the first
- 38:49two episodes released for the Asoka show.
- 38:52Our thoughts? Questions we have.
- 38:54I'm sure there'll be some. Yeah.
- 38:56There's gonna be feelings. Maybe I have a clax on alert.
- 38:59I don't know. Maybe we'll see if certain
- 39:03people show up in the episode or certain things are said or done.
- 39:06We may have a clax on alert, so join us back here for a special
- 39:10Tano Tuesday episode of Most Things Kenobi.
- 39:16OK, last week we talked about how Obi Wan could have turned to
- 39:21the dark side during the Mortis Ark specifically, and I posted
- 39:25on Instagram. I had a question I'd always
- 39:27wanted to ask James Arnold Taylor if he would have found
- 39:30that fun to play or kind of like disturbing or upsetting.
- 39:33And he actually responded to my questions.
- 39:36So. Woohoo.
- 39:37Hi James. We love you, hope you're doing
- 39:40well, sending you good wishes, so James Arnold, Taylor
- 39:45responded. It would have been interesting
- 39:48for sure, but ultimately I think it just couldn't happen.
- 39:51Obiwan is the quote true believer, and I think it would
- 39:54end up being like when I'm asked to cuss in a part I'm playing.
- 39:58It's never quite believable with like a googly.
- 40:01Face and he. Said he'd just be thinking
- 40:05quote, I can't do this. Yep, I mean, fair enough, right?
- 40:10Because we said it. There's there's just kind of no
- 40:13way. It's a fun thing for us to think
- 40:15about, but coming from the man himself, it's just not
- 40:19believable. Yeah, I mean, like, and I think
- 40:22we would find it interesting to watch, but I do think it would
- 40:25make us all a little uncomfortable to see dark Obi
- 40:28one. For real.
- 40:29Yeah, for real. It's something for sure.
- 40:32I I I can see it. I can visualize it, I can, I can
- 40:35dream it. But the reality of it is much
- 40:39more difficult than the dream of it.
- 40:42Yeah, I think it would make us squirm a little bit.
- 40:44It would be a little uncomfortable.
- 40:45But yeah, I thought that was cool that he responded to the
- 40:49questions. He's a friend of the show.
- 40:51And we thank you James. You're just so cool.
- 40:53Thank you. And thank you so much for
- 40:57joining us here on the Most Things Kenobi Podcast.
