- 1:43Speaker 2: Flipping Tables and Eternal Life In our last story, Jesus
- 1:48Speaker 2: performed His first of many miracles at a wedding in Cana.
- 1:52Speaker 2: By the request of His mother, Jesus blessed a wedding
- 1:55Speaker 2: by turning water into wine. Although the guests were not
- 1:58Speaker 2: aware of this miracle, the servants and disciples knew. They
- 2:02Speaker 2: awed at the humble power of Christ. They knew even
- 2:05Speaker 2: more that he was the promised Messiah. Now we witness
- 2:09Speaker 2: the righteous anger of Jesus. When the greed of men
- 2:12Speaker 2: seeps into the temple gates, Jesus violently empties its courtyard.
- 2:16Speaker 2: He drives out corruption, then speaks of eternal life and
- 2:20Speaker 2: why he has come, inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible

- 2:57Speaker 3: slash stress. We have now seen Jesus calling his disciples
- 3:02Speaker 3: to himself. Men who believed that he was from God,
- 3:05Speaker 3: even if they didn't fully understand his purpose or the
- 3:08Speaker 3: path that he would take as the Messiah, but they
- 3:10Speaker 3: were compelled to the call. They dropped everything and began
- 3:14Speaker 3: following Jesus. We also heard the last time how Jesus
- 3:18Speaker 3: performed his first miracle in Cana of Galilee. turning water
- 3:21Speaker 3: into wine. It is a symbol of the power of
- 3:24Speaker 3: Christ to transform our lives. The miracle further strengthened the disciples'
- 3:29Speaker 3: faith in Jesus. Today, we'll hear how Jesus shows a
- 3:33Speaker 3: righteous anger at the dishonoring and the disrespectfulness of God's
- 3:37Speaker 3: house by greedy men who were seeking personal gain at
- 3:41Speaker 3: the temple gates. Christ will act swiftly and forcefully to
- 3:45Speaker 3: cleanse his temple, showing the disciples that he was zealous
- 3:48Speaker 3: for his Father's house and serious about calling out wickedness
- 3:52Speaker 3: and hypocrisy wherever it presented itself. Most of the religious
- 3:57Speaker 3: leaders will look on this act with scorn. But one
- 4:00Speaker 3: man will seek Jesus out, in secret, wanting to know more.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Let's listen now to the reading of God's Word.
- 4:09Speaker 2: It was Passover in Jerusalem. Men, women, and children from
- 4:13Speaker 2: many nations gathered in the temple courtyards to make a
- 4:16Speaker 2: sacrifice to the Lord. It was a widely celebrated time,
- 4:20Speaker 2: a time for reflection on the goodness of God, a
- 4:23Speaker 2: time for prayer and thanksgiving, a time to contemplate the
- 4:27Speaker 2: saving power of God. However, when Jesus walked into the
- 4:31Speaker 2: temple gates, he did not see people celebrating the Lord.
- 4:34Speaker 2: He saw money changers and lenders haggling with foreigners. He
- 4:39Speaker 2: saw temple clerks charging extra money for people to buy sacrifices.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Worst of all, he saw the courtyard of the Gentiles
- 4:46Speaker 2: filled with money-hungry salesmen. Money changers were purposefully hiking up
- 4:51Speaker 2: exchange rates so the Gentiles had to pay more money
- 4:54Speaker 2: for sacrifices. People outside the family of God had come
- 4:58Speaker 2: to Jerusalem to seek forgiveness. Instead, they were met with
- 5:02Speaker 2: payments and fees. The religious leaders were making people pay
- 5:06Speaker 2: to access forgiveness. The deep fury of God welled up
- 5:11Speaker 2: within Jesus. Silently, Jesus grabbed some cords from a nearby cart.
- 5:16Speaker 2: He sat down and began to braid them. His disciples
- 5:20Speaker 2: watched him curiously. They were used to seeing Jesus filled
- 5:24Speaker 2: with joy and peace, yet there was a different expression
- 5:27Speaker 2: on his face. Righteous anger. Jesus finished braiding a long
- 5:32Speaker 2: braid of leather cords twice as long as himself. He
- 5:35Speaker 2: stood up. Although Jesus was not a particularly tall man,
- 5:39Speaker 2: his presence felt larger than the temple itself. Like lightning,
- 5:43Speaker 2: Jesus swung his hips and whipped the braid towards the
- 5:46Speaker 2: sheep and oxen. The livestock scattered and ran away as
- 5:50Speaker 2: Jesus relentlessly drove them out of the temple. The sellers
- 5:53Speaker 2: of the livestock ran after them. Jesus turned his eyes
- 5:57Speaker 2: towards the money changer. With purpose, he marched toward the table,
- 6:01Speaker 2: took the bags of temple currency, and threw them against
- 6:04Speaker 2: the wall. Jesus turned towards the large stone tables with
- 6:09Speaker 2: weights and scales. With godlike strength, Jesus flipped them over
- 6:13Speaker 2: on their sides and let the gold spill over the edge.
- 6:16Speaker 2: The money changers and salesmen were frantically trying to gather
- 6:20Speaker 2: their goods when Jesus marched up the temple stairs. The
- 6:23Speaker 2: people watched him closely, and the entire courtyard fell silent.
- 6:28Speaker 2: It is written, Jesus began to yell, it is written,
- 6:32Speaker 2: my father's house should be called a house of prayer. Jesus'
- 6:37Speaker 2: eyes were filled with furious compassion. But look at what
- 6:41Speaker 2: is around you. Look closely. You have turned this house
- 6:45Speaker 2: of prayer into a den of thieves. His disciples listened
- 6:49Speaker 2: to his words. They could see the deep pain in Jesus' eyes.
- 6:53Speaker 2: All he wanted was for people to worship God free
- 6:56Speaker 2: from burdens. The prophecy of David resonated in their minds.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Zeal for your house will consume me. The people looked
- 7:05Speaker 2: at him with awe, but the religious leaders looked at
- 7:08Speaker 2: him with contempt. What authority do you have to say
- 7:11Speaker 2: these things? What sign will you show us? Jesus dropped
- 7:15Speaker 2: the whip in his hands and pointed to the temple.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Destroy this temple and I will show you. If you
- 7:21Speaker 2: destroy it, I will raise it back up again in
- 7:23Speaker 2: three days. A chuckle could be heard from the crowd.
- 7:27Speaker 2: One of them scoffed at him and said, It took
- 7:29Speaker 2: 46 years to rebuild that temple and you think you
- 7:33Speaker 2: could do so in three days? Jesus shook his head
- 7:36Speaker 2: and walked down the steps. He took his disciples and
- 7:40Speaker 2: left the courtyard. What they did not know is that
- 7:42Speaker 2: Jesus was not speaking of the actual temple. He was
- 7:45Speaker 2: speaking of his body. He would be destroyed and raised
- 7:49Speaker 2: again in three days' time, all for the sake of
- 7:52Speaker 2: people worshiping God free from burdens. Many of the Pharisees
- 7:57Speaker 2: scoffed at Jesus. They shook their heads and spat in
- 8:00Speaker 2: His direction. They thought of Him to be just another zealot.
- 8:04Speaker 2: They were wrong. They were profoundly and dangerously wrong. Yet
- 8:09Speaker 2: there was one among them who did not scoff. His
- 8:12Speaker 2: curiosity about Jesus was piqued. In the dead of night,
- 8:15Speaker 2: a Pharisee named Nicodemus entered into the home of Jesus.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Nicodemus knocked on the door silently. He did not want
- 8:22Speaker 2: to be seen speaking with Jesus in fear that it
- 8:25Speaker 2: might ruin his reputation. Jesus opened the door and smiled.
- 8:30Speaker 2: He greeted Nicodemus and allowed him to come in. A
- 8:33Speaker 2: few of Jesus' followers were sitting beside the fire. Jesus
- 8:37Speaker 2: sat Nicodemus down. He had been expecting him. How can
- 8:41Speaker 2: I help you? Jesus asked, pouring Nicodemus a drink. Nicodemus
- 8:46Speaker 2: began speaking. Rabbi, there is no doubt in my mind
- 8:49Speaker 2: you are a teacher sent from God. No one can
- 8:53Speaker 2: do these things that you have been doing otherwise. Jesus
- 8:56Speaker 2: nodded in agreement. However, he was more than a teacher.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Unless one is born again, he truly cannot see the
- 9:04Speaker 2: kingdom of God, Jesus said. Nicodemus was confused at his statement.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I'm not sure I follow, Rabbi. Are you suggesting that
- 9:12Speaker 2: someone needs to reenter his mother's womb and be born again?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Jesus gave a gentle laugh.
- 9:19Speaker 3: No, no.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Listen, unless you are born of the Spirit, you cannot
- 9:23Speaker 2: enter into the kingdom of God. We are all born
- 9:26Speaker 2: in the flesh, yes. However, not all are born of
- 9:29Speaker 2: the Spirit. Jesus could tell that Nicodemus was having difficulty understanding.
- 9:35Speaker 2: He leaned forward and touched Nicodemus' shoulders. Don't be confused
- 9:40Speaker 2: by this, he said reassuringly. The wind blows and nobody
- 9:43Speaker 2: can see it. It is the same with being born
- 9:46Speaker 2: by the Spirit. But how can that happen? Nicodemus asked.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Aren't you a teacher? Jesus replied. You should understand this.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I have done many signs and given you earthly examples.
- 9:59Speaker 2: You have seen and heard them, yet you and the
- 10:01Speaker 2: rest of the Pharisees still do not believe. So how
- 10:05Speaker 2: could I possibly explain heavenly matters to you? Jesus could
- 10:08Speaker 2: see the look of disappointment on Nicodemus' face. He had
- 10:12Speaker 2: compassion on him and loved him for his heart. Jesus
- 10:16Speaker 2: spoke of himself now, saying, The one who truly knows
- 10:20Speaker 2: the things of heaven is the one who came from heaven.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Just as Moses lifted the bronze serpent up in the
- 10:26Speaker 2: wilderness for people to be healed, so people will look
- 10:29Speaker 2: upon him and receive eternal life. Nicodemus knew that story,
- 10:34Speaker 2: the story of the Israelites being saved in the wilderness
- 10:37Speaker 2: from venomous snakes by gazing upon the bronze serpent. He
- 10:41Speaker 2: was beginning to understand, slightly, what Jesus was telling him.
- 10:45Speaker 2: The Lord smiled and leaned in closer to Nicodemus. For
- 10:49Speaker 2: God so loved the world that He offered up His
- 10:52Speaker 2: only begotten Son. And whoever believes in Him shall not perish,
- 10:56Speaker 2: but have everlasting life. And God did not send His
- 11:00Speaker 2: Son to condemn the world, no, but that by Him
- 11:03Speaker 2: the world should be saved. There was a joyfulness in Jesus' voice.
- 11:08Speaker 2: His disciples were behind Him, hanging on His every word.
- 11:12Speaker 2: His eyes glistened in the firelight. The light has come
- 11:16Speaker 2: to the world, Jesus continued. But people love darkness rather
- 11:21Speaker 2: than the light. Wickedness hates the light because it exposes it.
- 11:27Speaker 2: But whoever knows and acts upon the truth steps into
- 11:30Speaker 2: the light. With those words, Nicodemus left. He held the
- 11:35Speaker 2: words of Jesus closely, regretting that he could not totally understand.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Today we begin with Jesus once again at the temple
- 11:45Speaker 3: during Passover. And this time we don't see Jesus sitting
- 11:49Speaker 3: with teachers. In today's reading, we saw something that included
- 11:52Speaker 3: a holy zeal and a righteous, fiery anger that comes
- 11:56Speaker 3: from the Lord. God's temple is meant to be a
- 11:59Speaker 3: house of worship, a place of prayer, a place where
- 12:02Speaker 3: people are forgiven. But instead, the temple was being used
- 12:06Speaker 3: by greedy businessmen and religious leaders taking advantage of people,
- 12:10Speaker 3: charging exorbitant fees, for them to access sacrifices and find forgiveness.
- 12:16Speaker 3: We often think of the gentleness of Jesus, and truly
- 12:19Speaker 3: Jesus is gentle and lowly of heart. His character is kind.
- 12:25Speaker 3: But Jesus is also strong and never weak. He was
- 12:29Speaker 3: always deeply devoted to the things of God. Just like
- 12:32Speaker 3: his predecessor, ancestor King David, was called to be strong
- 12:36Speaker 3: as a warrior for the Lord, Jesus now rises up
- 12:39Speaker 3: to defend the house of God. He was not silent,
- 12:44Speaker 3: and this was not calm. It was violent. He was
- 12:47Speaker 3: determined to set people straight. God's temple would not be
- 12:50Speaker 3: defiled by thieves. He braided a whip and scattered the vendors.
- 12:54Speaker 3: He turned over the tables of those charging money and
- 12:57Speaker 3: taking advantage of the Gentiles, speaking with loud voices accusations
- 13:02Speaker 3: against them. He would not allow this hypocrisy, this dishonesty
- 13:07Speaker 3: to continue. This was not Jesus losing control of his emotion,
- 13:11Speaker 3: flying off the handle and losing composure. This was clear
- 13:15Speaker 3: and planned behavior. This was righteous indignation. We can only
- 13:21Speaker 3: imagine how shocked the disciples must have been to see
- 13:24Speaker 3: Jesus perform this act of cleansing the temple and behaving
- 13:28Speaker 3: in this way. But they remembered the words of Psalm 69,
- 13:32Speaker 3: which says, The zeal of your house will consume me.
- 13:35Speaker 3: This is yet another sign that Jesus is indeed the Messiah.
- 13:41Speaker 3: But the religious leaders and other Jews did not see
- 13:44Speaker 3: this so clearly. They challenged Jesus and asked what right
- 13:47Speaker 3: he had, what authority he possessed to say and do
- 13:49Speaker 3: these things. His response for them was confusing to those
- 13:53Speaker 3: who heard it. In John 2, 19, Jesus answered them,
- 13:57Speaker 3: destroy this temple and I will raise it again in
- 14:00Speaker 3: three days. They thought he was talking about the physical temple,
- 14:05Speaker 3: the buildings. the temple of stone and mortar. But Jesus
- 14:09Speaker 3: was speaking here about himself. He was the temple. He
- 14:13Speaker 3: was the very presence of God. The glory of God
- 14:16Speaker 3: was upon him. And one day he would be destroyed.
- 14:20Speaker 3: His temple, his physical body would die, but he would
- 14:23Speaker 3: be raised to life on the third day. Here Jesus
- 14:27Speaker 3: begins prophesying his own death and resurrection. The Pharisees tried
- 14:33Speaker 3: to laugh this off. failing to see the one who
- 14:36Speaker 3: was standing before them. All they knew is that they
- 14:39Speaker 3: despised this man who spoke with such authority and challenged
- 14:42Speaker 3: their position in power. But Jesus was not seeking personal
- 14:47Speaker 3: power and pride and prominence. He was calling people to repentance.
- 14:51Speaker 3: He was calling people to himself and a brand new life.
- 14:55Speaker 3: There was one leader among them who wanted to know
- 14:58Speaker 3: more about this Jesus. Perhaps he was afraid to ask
- 15:02Speaker 3: in the broad daylight, to ask openly. So at night,
- 15:06Speaker 3: this man came to Jesus. His name was Nicodemus. He
- 15:10Speaker 3: wanted to know more about this man. Is he the Messiah?
- 15:13Speaker 3: Is he more than a man? Is he more than
- 15:16Speaker 3: a teacher from God? Jesus then told Nicodemus that to
- 15:20Speaker 3: enter the kingdom of God, one must be born again.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Nicodemus was confused, so he asked for clarification. How is
- 15:29Speaker 3: it possible to be born again? The Lord explained to
- 15:33Speaker 3: him that he was not talking about physical birth, but
- 15:36Speaker 3: birth in the spirit, heavenly birth, to be born again
- 15:39Speaker 3: from above. This is the new life that Jesus promises
- 15:43Speaker 3: to all who will be born again. Jesus then gave
- 15:47Speaker 3: Nicodemus and us an illustration. He talked about Moses and
- 15:51Speaker 3: the Israelites who looked to a bronze serpent, a brazen
- 15:54Speaker 3: serpent in the wilderness to be saved from the bites
- 15:57Speaker 3: of snakes. This was a story that Nicodemus knew well.
- 16:02Speaker 3: And Jesus explained to him that this is a picture
- 16:05Speaker 3: of God's love, that God sent His only Son, Jesus,
- 16:09Speaker 3: into the world, and that whoever would believe in Him
- 16:11Speaker 3: would not perish, but have everlasting life. This, of course,
- 16:16Speaker 3: is one of the key verses in all of the Bible,
- 16:18Speaker 3: John 3.16. For God so loved the world that He
- 16:22Speaker 3: gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
- 16:25Speaker 3: would not perish, but have everlasting life. His words clearly
- 16:31Speaker 3: stuck with Nicodemus. Jesus came into the world to save sinners,
- 16:37Speaker 3: religious people like Nicodemus and irreligious people even like you
- 16:42Speaker 3: and me. Whoever you are, God loves you and has
- 16:46Speaker 3: a wonderful plan for your life. And if you will
- 16:49Speaker 3: trust in Christ and Christ alone as your Savior and Lord,
- 16:53Speaker 3: you will be given eternal life. Not only will your
- 16:56Speaker 3: sins be forgiven, But Jesus will live in your life
- 17:00Speaker 3: and you will live with the hope of eternal life
- 17:02Speaker 3: with you now and forever. I want to invite you
- 17:05Speaker 3: and encourage you to be born again. If you have
- 17:09Speaker 3: never put your faith and trust in Jesus, do it
- 17:12Speaker 3: right now. Simply pray a prayer and invite Christ into
- 17:15Speaker 3: your life. Be willing to turn from your sins, that's repentance,
- 17:19Speaker 3: and receive Jesus as your Lord and follow him as
- 17:22Speaker 3: your Savior. And if you will do this, you will
- 17:25Speaker 3: have a brand new life now and forever. Pray something
- 17:29Speaker 3: like this. Jesus, I ask you to come into my life,
- 17:33Speaker 3: to be my Savior and my God, my Master and friend.
- 17:37Speaker 3: In the power of your Spirit, I will live for
- 17:39Speaker 3: you all the days of my life, and I will
- 17:42Speaker 3: live with you forever in heaven. Lord, thank you for
- 17:45Speaker 3: giving me a brand new life today. In Jesus' name, amen.
