- 0:13Hello friends. It is shown here and it is so
- 0:17great that you have joined me. Because today on this a chapter,
- 0:21a day podcast, we are going to continue to read through God's
- 0:25word, one chapter at a time. And I'm afraid that this This is
- 0:30a chapter that goes down in infamy.
- 0:33When God is doing all of this to set up this relationship with
- 0:38the people of Israel and they say nut nut not interested.
- 0:43We just going to do it our own way.
- 0:46This is the story of Moses coming down the mountain, with
- 0:48the stone tablets and seeing them worshipping the gold calf.
- 0:54Now, something that's fascinating that I never really
- 0:56understood until recently is something that I heard from an
- 1:00Testament scholar by the name of John Walton who I have been
- 1:04studying under end. He suggested that back in the
- 1:07ancient near East gods, were often placed on a pedestal and
- 1:11on that pedestal they could be worshiped and the classic
- 1:14pedestal of that time in history.
- 1:17What's the gold calf? So when these people are
- 1:20building a gold calf, he says it's not them replacing God but
- 1:24it's them saying we are so sick of waiting.
- 1:28We just going to do this our own way.
- 1:30Say we're just going to pretend you are like every other God in
- 1:32the in the ancient world, we're going to build a stand for you,
- 1:36that you will then have to come down and then we can worship
- 1:39you. So it's them trying to worship
- 1:42God on their terms, not on the terms that God is setting out
- 1:47and their lives. The problem God is setting out
- 1:49this very specific way that he wants his people to come to him,
- 1:52to show him that he is nothing, like all the other gods that are
- 1:56the Nations around them worship. So join me as we read together
- 2:02this troubling chapter, Exodus, chapter 32.
- 2:16When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back
- 2:19down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron.
- 2:22Come on. They said, make us some Gods who
- 2:24can lead us. We don't know what happened to
- 2:26this fellow. Moses, who brought us here from
- 2:29the land of Egypt. So Aaron said, take the gold
- 2:33rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters and
- 2:36bring them to me. All the people took the gold
- 2:39rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron.
- 2:41Then, Aaron took the gold melted it down and And mold it into the
- 2:45shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they
- 2:49exclaimed o Israel. These are the gods who brought
- 2:53you out of the land of Egypt. Aaron saw how excited the people
- 2:57were. So we built an altar in front of
- 2:59the calf, then he announced tomorrow will be a festival of
- 3:03the Lord. The people got up early the next
- 3:07morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings.
- 3:11After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking and they
- 3:15indulged in Pagan, revelry. The Lord told Moses quick.
- 3:20Go down the mountain. Your people, whom you brought
- 3:23from the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.
- 3:27How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded
- 3:30them to live, they have melted down gold and made a calf and
- 3:34they have bow. Down and sacrifice to it.
- 3:37They are saying these, are your God's o Israel who brought you
- 3:41out of the land of Egypt. Then the Lord said I have seen
- 3:46how stubborn and rebellious. These people are now leave me
- 3:50alone. So my Fierce anger can blaze
- 3:53against them and I will destroy them.
- 3:56Then I will make you Moses into a great nation.
- 4:00But Moses tried to pacify the Lord, his God O Lord.
- 4:04He said, why you so angry with your own people whom you brought
- 4:08from the land of Egypt with such great power and such a strong
- 4:12hand. Why let the Egyptians say their
- 4:15God? Rescued them with the evil
- 4:17intention of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them
- 4:20from the face of the Earth. Turn away from your Fierce
- 4:23anger, change your mind about this terrible disaster.
- 4:26You have threatened against your people.
- 4:29Remember your servants a Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, you
- 4:32bound yourself with an oath to them saying I will make your
- 4:36descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and I will give
- 4:40them all of this land that I have promised to your
- 4:43descendants and they will possess it forever.
- 4:47So the Lord changed his mind about the terrible disaster.
- 4:51He threatened to bring on his people, then Moses turned and
- 4:55went down the mountain. He held in his hands.
- 4:57The two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the Covenant
- 5:02they were inscribed on both sides front and back.
- 5:05These tablets were God's work. The words on them were written
- 5:09by God himself. When Joshua heard the boisterous
- 5:13noise of the people shouting below them.
- 5:15He exclaimed to Moses. It sounds like war in the camp
- 5:19but Moses replied. No, it's not a shout of Victory,
- 5:23nor the Wailing of defeat. I hear the sound of a
- 5:26celebration. Then they came near the camp,
- 5:30Moses saw the calf and the dancing and he burned with
- 5:34anger. He threw the stone tablets to
- 5:37the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain.
- 5:40He took the car Calf. They had made and burned it.
- 5:43Then he grounded into powder. Threw it into the water and
- 5:46forced the people to drink it. Finally, he turned to Aaron and
- 5:50demanded. What did these people do to you,
- 5:53to make? You bring such terrible sin upon
- 5:56them. Don't get so upset.
- 5:59My Lord, Aaron replied. You yourself know how evil these
- 6:02people are? They said to me, make us Gods
- 6:05who will lead us. We don't know what happened to
- 6:07this fellow. Moses, who brought us here from
- 6:10the land of Egypt. So I told them, however, has
- 6:13gold jewelry. Take it off when they're brought
- 6:15it to me. I simply threw it into the fire
- 6:17and out. Came this calf Moses saw that
- 6:21Aaron had, let the people get completely out of control, much
- 6:25to the amusement of their enemies.
- 6:27So he stood at the entrance of the camp and shouted, all of you
- 6:31who are on the Lord's Side, come here and join me and all the
- 6:36Levites gathered round him. Moses told them this is what the
- 6:41law. Lord.
- 6:41The god of Israel says, each of you, take your swords and go
- 6:46back and forth from one end of the camp to the other kill
- 6:50everyone. Even your brother's friends and
- 6:53neighbors the Levites obeyed Moses command, and about 3,000
- 6:59people died that day. Then Moses told the Levites
- 7:04today, you have ordained yourselves for the service of
- 7:07the Lord for you obeyed him. Even though it meant killing in
- 7:11your own sons and brothers today, you have earned a
- 7:15blessing. The next day, Moses said to the
- 7:18people, you have committed, a terrible sin, but I will go back
- 7:24up to the Lord on the mountain. Perhaps I will be able to obtain
- 7:27forgiveness for your sin. So Moses returned to the Lord
- 7:32and said, oh, what a terrible sin.
- 7:34These people have committed. They have made gods of gold for
- 7:38themselves, but now if you will only forgive their sin, but if
- 7:43not erase my name, from the wreck, Could you have written,
- 7:48but the Lord replied to Moses. No, I will.
- 7:51The Ray's the names of everyone who has sinned against me now.
- 7:55Go lead the people to the place. I told you about look, my angel
- 8:01will lead the way before you and when I come to call the people
- 8:05to account, I will certainly hold them responsible for their
- 8:09sins. Then the Lord sent a Great
- 8:12Plague upon the people because they had worshipped the calf
- 8:15Aaron had. Made.
- 8:27Lord hearing these words. It just jars.
- 8:32So terribly in our ears. The worship of a different form
- 8:39of a different. God, the murder in your name.
- 8:45It just all goes so wrong so fast and we just don't
- 8:49understand. But Lord we know that you are
- 8:54holy and that through to your core and back out.
- 8:59Again you are loved and so we rest in your love that you have
- 9:05shown Us by fulfilling and superseding all of this with
- 9:10Jesus. Thank you that your character is
- 9:14good and that we are confused. We just lean into your
- 9:19character. We are love you, our Lord and
- 9:24our savior. And it's in Jesus name that we
- 9:26pray. Amen.
- 9:21We are love you, our Lord and our savior.
- 9:25And it's in Jesus name that we pray.
