- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05It's Monday, so it's time for Shapiro World with David Shapiro from SASFIN
- 0:10Securities in Johannesburg.
- 0:12David, Donald Trump's at it again.
- 0:12I mean, we could start every podcast with Donald Trump's at it again.
- 0:16But this time, it's not the geopolitics that I want to talk about, although we
- 0:20will.
- 0:21It's the attack on the Fed and Jerome Powell, which is petty.
- 0:26which is dangerous, and the bond market doesn't like it.
- 0:28It's not going mad, but the bond market definitely doesn't like what's going on.
- 0:33The yields are ticking up, the bond prices themselves coming down when it should be
- 0:38the other way around.
- 0:40Something's going on.
- 0:42People are saying we don't like this, and therefore we're getting rid of our bond
- 0:43holdings.
- 0:45We're starting to.
- 0:47I think he's pushing it too far this time, and I think there's going to be a
- 0:49backlash.
- 0:51We haven't had a chance to hear from business companies.
- 0:54But it's surprising that they're not saying something.
- 0:56This is dangerous.
- 0:58I mean, what was unique about it is that Powell's been pretty stoic up to now.
- 1:05He hasn't said a word.
- 1:05He just carried on, this is what I'm here to do.
- 1:08You know, I'm here to decide whether to put rates up or down and whatever it is.
- 1:14This time he came out punching.
- 1:17And he said, this is political.
- 1:19In other words… politics is steering the, he, Powell wants, sorry,
- 1:25Trump wants politics to steer the fed rates or the fed decisions,
- 1:32not economics.
- 1:34So he's come out now quite aggressive.
- 1:36What's also interesting is that the Senate committees,
- 1:41I don't know who the particular senator who's in charge of the election of
- 1:48appointment of
- 1:50new fed governors, but he's come out whether it's a banking committee or
- 1:54whatever, he's come out with Elizabeth Warren also saying, "Look,
- 1:56as long as this continues we will not entertain the appointment of a new
- 1:59governor."
- 2:01This could just put everything on hold.
- 2:04So it's quite an important issue and the markets seem to,
- 2:11okay, mark it down slightly, this is what we're supposed to do.
- 2:15But Lindsay, it's a very worrying sign and I know we talk about Trump,
- 2:21but there are times that I can tolerate him.
- 2:25There are other times where I say, okay,
- 2:28it's time for the lawmakers to take control.
- 2:32In other words, for the Senate, for Congress and so on, just to cut him down
- 2:38now.
- 2:39It's enough.
- 2:40We don't want a country like...
- 2:41Or you don't want to see America going this way.
- 2:46For me, it's...
- 2:47It's very worrying and I'm just hoping that they're big enough people there, you
- 2:52know,
- 2:52in the US to stand up to this and say, okay, enough is enough.
- 2:56You know, this is it.
- 2:57But I don't know, you know, everybody's scared of him.
- 3:00They tiptoe around him, which is also very, very new.
- 3:04Because he's such an underwhelming person.
- 3:08I mean, in every way, physically, mentally, everywhere he's loathsome.
- 3:13I can't believe Peter Mandelson, I don't know if you followed the Mandelson story.
- 3:16I know who Peter Mandelson is, yeah.
- 3:17Oh God, what he said on a BBC interview, he said, "I like his humour and his
- 3:23graciousness",
- 3:25because they used to be the ambassador, Britain's ambassador in Washington.
- 3:28Graciousness.
- 3:29His graciousness, and he says that he makes decisions based on something
- 3:35horrible,
- 3:37it infuriated me.
- 3:39But I just don't understand why people...
- 3:39He got into trouble, Mandelson, didn't he?
- 3:43No, he's a rogue.
- 3:45He's finished now though.
- 3:47He was Epstein, one of Epstein's mates.
- 3:51But anyway, yes, we were talking about Trump.
- 3:54No one's standing up to him.
- 3:55But he's done this other thing now.
- 3:56He's coming out with this 10% charge.
- 3:59You can't charge more than that on credit cards.
- 4:02This is also a declaration.
- 4:04In other words, you know, he's trying to think of the midterms and to get the votes
- 4:11of anybody who's got a
- 4:13debt or a loan with a credit card company.
- 4:14I see, yes.
- 4:15He's starting his I'm a president for the people sort of campaign, is he?
- 4:19Yes, yes.
- 4:20You know, limiting the amount that you can charge on credit cards because it does
- 4:27sometimes go, I don't know, 20%,
- 4:2930%.
- 4:31But he's limiting it to a certain amount.
- 4:33I don't know what the...
- 4:35you know what the exact amount is, but whatever.
- 4:35I think the Visa Mastercard business model probably works a little bit better than
- 4:41Trump's mind, don't you?
- 4:43Yeah, well of course, you can't decide that.
- 4:48I can understand money lenders,
- 4:50those chaps who lend money on the street corner and what they charge,
- 4:56but I wouldn't put credit card companies into that category as well, they do well.
- 5:01But they provide an incredible service.
- 5:03You know, anywhere in the world you want to use a Visa card, you can.
- 5:07A Mastercard, whatever it is.
- 5:09But I agree with you.
- 5:10I think they know their business a little bit better than Mr Trump.
- 5:14Quite right.
- 5:15Talking about business, David, before we get on to geopolitics and other matters.
- 5:18A very interesting piece that I got from Annabel Bishop, the chief economist at
- 5:25Investec in Johannesburg, talking about global trade.
- 5:27And it's with a South African bias, but it says it gives global figures as well.
- 5:31And the headline is, or rather the first paragraph says the following,
- 5:33global trade has shown strong growth despite US tariffs and geopolitical
- 5:39tensions in general,
- 5:41resulting in changing trade patterns reaching over, what is this number here?
- 5:4435 trillion, which is a record level.
- 5:48It's up 2.5% compared with the previous three months.
- 5:53For July to September, global trade was up 2.5%.
- 5:57Okay, so it's...
- 5:58It's a little bit behind but only a quarter behind.
- 6:01Energy commodities continue to dominate global commodity trade.
- 6:05This is the one that really interests me.
- 6:06It says, "The change in trade patterns which has been a key driver of resilience
- 6:12has
- 6:14included things I hadn't heard actually, friend shoring, near shoring and on
- 6:18shoring,
- 6:18while the jumping global trade came from rising volumes in the main on stable
- 6:25global demand."
- 6:27When they say friend shoring and near shoring, I think it means people said,
- 6:31never mind the United States.
- 6:33Let's look for markets elsewhere.
- 6:35Let's look for markets closer to us.
- 6:37So the Southern Hemisphere, for example, has got a South-South drive.
- 6:40So the Southern Hemisphere countries are trading with each other.
- 6:45And so what Trump has done is essentially made, is starting to make America an
- 6:50island.
- 6:51And other people are saying, well, if we can, we'll deal with other people.
- 6:54Thank you very much.
- 6:56I think, well, they were forced into that.
- 6:59Because of the tariffs and focusing on local markets.
- 7:05Look, I don't think it's a bad thing.
- 7:06I don't know enough.
- 7:07I can never challenge Annabella or even understand the global patterns,
- 7:13but I can imagine that countries like that have been forced into it.
- 7:18But you know what we don't understand is just how big the Asian economies are in
- 7:25terms of
- 7:25population.
- 7:27Whether it's Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, those countries, Korea,
- 7:34Japan.
- 7:36These are sizable economies.
- 7:37They might not be sizably rich, but they are developing.
- 7:41When I say developing, I'm using the word much broadly: developing economies.
- 7:46I can imagine that there's a lot of trade there.
- 7:49I don't know whether they're enemies.
- 7:52I know Japan is having a go at China and their issues there.
- 7:56I don't think you can ignore them.
- 7:59I looked at India's trade, I mean GDP numbers, which were astounding.
- 8:04And around that, I thought, okay, well, let's look.
- 8:08The problem, Lindsay, it's not easy to find businesses.
- 8:12You know what I'm saying?
- 8:13It's not easy to find companies that can compare with the size of the American
- 8:20companies or the ones that we know, Europe.
- 8:22that we're familiar with.
- 8:24And also, David, let's face it, you don't know the Indian market.
- 8:24You can say, well, look at how many billion people there are and look at the
- 8:31potential should you get your company right or your product right.
- 8:33But you don't know.
- 8:35You have to be on the ground or you have to have someone on the ground.
- 8:37And you're an on-the-ground sort of person when it comes to America because you're a
- 8:39regular visitor there.
- 8:41And although you're not going to see a director of Microsoft or Intel or whoever
- 8:44it is or NVIDIA,
- 8:46you know the company and you feel comfortable with it.
- 8:47With India, I wouldn't know where to start.
- 8:50No, it's exactly that.
- 8:52And when you look at it, it's made up of a number of small and medium cap companies,
- 8:59many,
- 9:01many of them.
- 9:03And I don't know the areas, I don't know the relationships.
- 9:05There are a few that come through in the nifty-fifty or thereabouts, but they're
- 9:12not businesses that I can really say,
- 9:14oh, I've got to own this one or that one.
- 9:16If you want to, you might want to buy the index.
- 9:17But, you know, that's not...
- 9:19I like to get a feel for their economy.
- 9:21So even though we talk about Malaysia and talk about Indonesia and talk about these
- 9:28places where a lot of activity is
- 9:30taking place, it's very difficult to translate that into a handful of companies
- 9:35or businesses.
- 9:37And that's why we tend to go back to America.
- 9:39But hopefully it's happening.
- 9:43I think the same I'm having the same problem with South Africa at the moment as
- 9:48well.
- 9:49As you know, we're talking about South Africa doing better in the green shoots
- 9:54and you mentioned it last week.
- 9:56Yes.
- 9:58But when I translate it into actual businesses and say, is there anything I
- 10:00can buy?
- 10:01And I go through the whole list.
- 10:04I still haven't got that confidence.
- 10:07The only one that we might be seeing,
- 10:10might be looking into is with commodity prices starting to tick up.
- 10:15Do we find are BHP cheap?
- 10:19Sorry, is it cheap?
- 10:20Is Anglo's okay?
- 10:22They're doing the deal with tech and now we've got the Glencore.
- 10:27Is it a copper company now?
- 10:28Have you looked at the commodity spread now?
- 10:30Has it become a copper company?
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:33Well, they're trying to get dominance in copper.
- 10:37And there's a lot of talk up of copper.
- 10:42I'm not in the market.
- 10:44I'm not a consumer.
- 10:46It's at record highs.
- 10:47That's not bad.
- 10:47That's what I'm saying.
- 10:49But people are accumulating the metal.
- 10:52So they must have something to do with it or they do believe that there's going to
- 10:59be a demand for it, whether it's for electricity,
- 11:01power transmission.
- 11:03or whether it's for home building, whatever it is.
- 11:04But a lot of copper has gone into the US.
- 11:07But companies are starting to pick up slightly.
- 11:11You're seeing more activity.
- 11:14This Rio deal is very interesting with
- 11:18Glencore. I get it to be worth about two, you know, looking at both market caps,
- 11:25it's a $200 billion deal.
- 11:28Not bad.
- 11:29Yeah, no, it's big.
- 11:30But I don't know if it's going to take off simply because you've got two very
- 11:37dominant
- 11:39CEOs.
- 11:41Who's going to stand by, you know?
- 11:43And who's going to let is this going to be joint or whatever?
- 11:46I've never known Glencore to step aside.
- 11:50And they're the ones, you know, who started this.
- 11:54They're about 40%.
- 11:55You know, if it's going to be split, it's 40%.
- 11:58Glencore, 60% Rio Tinto.
- 12:01They must have a plan.
- 12:04What's the other chap?
- 12:04Simon Trott.
- 12:07He's been there for a long time, but he's only been in the job as CEO for a few
- 12:12months.
- 12:14It might fall down on that.
- 12:15These are all very great and everybody says we can see what the benefits are
- 12:20going to be,
- 12:20but let's sit around the table and say who's going to run this place.
- 12:25But it's interesting that when tech and Anglo get together, and then these two
- 12:31that you've just been talking about get together as well.
- 12:33And I've asked you this question before.
- 12:35Does consolidation in the industry mean that it's bullish for the raw material,
- 12:39the dollar-priced commodity?
- 12:42I don't know.
- 12:44You know, we'll find out.
- 12:47We're going to find out whether or not there is benefit because you're going to
- 12:54have to work out where are the benefits going to
- 12:56come I can understand if you've got two contiguous minds.
- 12:58In other words, a mind next to another one.
- 13:01And you've both got to build railways or you've both got to build plants or you've
- 13:06both got to do things.
- 13:08There I can see the benefits of a merger where you say we don't need two plants.
- 13:11We only need one.
- 13:12Let's merge.
- 13:14That's where I see benefits coming through.
- 13:17If we can prove that that's there.
- 13:19If each is after the other's assets and… Rio,
- 13:26who are copper and iron ore or whatever they are, kind of say, "Well, we'll take
- 13:32the iron ore.
- 13:34You take this.
- 13:36You run that." I don't know.
- 13:38These are complicated deals.
- 13:40We're going to see the same thing with Anglo-American as well in tech,
- 13:41what really comes out of it and you'll have to follow it over years.
- 13:45Listen, as we've said last year, good for Anglo-American.
- 13:49They sold out of the Altera in February.
- 13:52Great timing.
- 13:54It's the Wild West out there when it comes to commodities, David.
- 13:59No one seems to know what's going to happen to the oil price.
- 14:01Venezuela has been brushed aside almost.
- 14:03I mean, it's made it volatile.
- 14:05Look at Iran now.
- 14:07Iran is an interesting one.
- 14:09Initially there's worries that the oil there won't be any flows out of Iran.
- 14:14I know it's a controlled flow.
- 14:16But what happens if Iran does fall and suddenly you've got a new nation that you
- 14:22want to build up?
- 14:24It's going to be more oil on the floor in the market as well.
- 14:27I can't see as well as Venezuela.
- 14:30I can't see anything but trouble if there is a regime change, a violent regime
- 14:36change in Iran.
- 14:38I mean look at 1979 when the Shah was deposed.
- 14:39I mean it was chaos and now they want to go back they want the Shah's son to come
- 14:46and sit there.
- 14:48It will be a complete disaster.
- 14:50There'll be a free fall everyone will want a chunk of it.
- 14:50Even Trump wants a chunk of Iran.
- 14:52He doesn't even know where Iran is.
- 14:54Remember that time he bombed them with the B-52?
- 14:55He had those those very sleek bombers at night.
- 15:01And he said, these are the most tremendous bombers.
- 15:07We had a really strong reaction to Iran's nuclear program.
- 15:12And he said, and it was very dark that night.
- 15:16I remember him saying that, and I thought, this is a $100 billion jet you've got
- 15:21there.
- 15:22It doesn't matter whether it's dark or raining.
- 15:26It's going to find its target.
- 15:27Don't you worry about that.
- 15:30They didn't have flashlights.
- 15:31Yeah, we are bombers.
- 15:32That will be horrible.
- 15:34It's a situation that's developed.
- 15:37We're only the second week into the new year.
- 15:39And I mean, already you've had Venezuela.
- 15:41We're having Iran.
- 15:42We're having Rio Tinto.
- 15:45Cuba's also the next one.
- 15:47We've got Cal.
- 15:50Because, you know, only a few weeks in and...
- 15:52It's actually the 12th.
- 15:53It's not even two weeks in.
- 15:54It's the 12th of January.
- 15:55Look at that.
- 15:57Yeah.
- 15:57It's extraordinary.
- 15:58David, the other thing...
- 15:59Yeah, I was going to ask you if you could name all the countries that...
- 16:04Never mind the ones that he says he's stopped fighting each other.
- 16:07The ones that he's had a go at.
- 16:09We've had Iran.
- 16:10He bombed their nuclear facilities.
- 16:14There's been Venezuela.
- 16:15He invaded and took out the president.
- 16:19and is putting him on trial.
- 16:21What else have we got?
- 16:22We've got threatening Greenland.
- 16:24Panama Canal's gone a bit quiet.
- 16:26He was going to do something with the Panama Canal, but he hasn't done anything
- 16:32that hasn't come up for a long, long time now.
- 16:34But Greenland is definitely next.
- 16:34Didn't Black Rock or Black Spice buy it back?
- 16:38Black something did.
- 16:39From the Chinese.
- 16:41Yeah, something happened there.
- 16:43Black Stone or Black Rock.
- 16:44I don't know which one it was.
- 16:46Not Black Rock.
- 16:47Blackstone, yeah.
- 16:48Yeah, Blackstone.
- 16:49But he even went into Nigeria, David, because he wants that, you know, he said,
- 16:55oh, he says, I like Christians.
- 16:57I don't know if anyone told him that the Christians in Nigeria are black, because
- 17:02if he did, if he had found that out,
- 17:04he would definitely not have helped them because he's a rabid racist, as you know.
- 17:07But anyway, what is bad?
- 17:08The Greenland is next.
- 17:10And that's worry.
- 17:12And I mean, that's NATO.
- 17:15And I mean his whole story about whether or not, you know,
- 17:19he says they landed there 500 years ago and suddenly they lay claim to it.
- 17:23Well, I think there are a lot of other countries in history that have done
- 17:28exactly the same and are still there.
- 17:30You know, so I don't know.
- 17:31It's got a very strange sense of history.
- 17:35When he was asked about Denmark having sovereignty over Greenland.
- 17:43because they were there 200 years ago with their boats and they claimed it as theirs.
- 17:47And he said, well, we were there with our boats as well.
- 17:51No, it was more than 200 years ago, as you say, 500 years ago.
- 17:54America wasn't even invented 500 years ago.
- 17:57They didn't have any boats.
- 17:59What's he talking about?
- 18:01Nitwit.
- 18:01Yeah, I know.
- 18:02How's your tech stock portfolio?
- 18:05Not your portfolio, the suite of tech stocks.
- 18:09They're sort of jostling...
- 18:11Position, one day I saw Intel down 9%, next day up 11%.
- 18:15NVIDIA just treading water at the moment, isn't it?
- 18:19It's going to be I think there's going to be a period of digestion.
- 18:24I think the news is still positive.
- 18:26I'm quite positive on what's going have you seen ASML in the meantime?
- 18:30They're up about 20% this year alone.
- 18:34So you're finding it moving elsewhere.
- 18:36You've had good gains in Amazons and the Alphabets and so on.
- 18:40relative to where we are in the first week and also in December.
- 18:44And video has gone kind of flat, but I still think it's going to be a theme that
- 18:50dominates,
- 18:52but I don't expect massive gains in the first half of the year.
- 18:54We need to get through a few earning cycles, and then if they continue to grow,
- 18:59I think then the markets will respond in a way they should.
- 19:02So if we're coming into the fourth quarter earning season,
- 19:09I know that...
- 19:10There's quite positive views on what companies will earn and what they'll look
- 19:15like.
- 19:15I think that's going to be another...
- 19:17kind of underpin for the market.
- 19:20But with all the noise that we're hearing at the moment, you know, whether it's
- 19:26Trump, whether it's whatever it is,
- 19:28I still think markets are just brushing it aside and saying, okay, let's see what the
- 19:31companies are doing.
- 19:33You know, let's really get a feel for how they're operating and so on.
- 19:38I just see a headline coming through that Walmart's doing something with Gemini,
- 19:43whatever that means.
- 19:45So you're getting these tie ups in the same way as we saw the Jensen Wang doing a
- 19:49deal with Siemens.
- 19:51You're now getting Walmart doing a deal with Gemini, which is I think who's that?
- 19:54Microsoft.
- 19:55I never know which one it is.
- 19:59Who's Gemini?
- 20:00You're the tech man.
- 20:01Sorry, David.
- 20:02I don't know.
- 20:03I use Copilot and chat VPT.
- 20:07That's Microsoft.
- 20:07But, I mean, whatever it is, I think businesses beginning to adopt and
- 20:13introduce
- 20:15AI into a lot of business is which to me is the positive sign.
- 20:19Okay, so you're sticking with it.
- 20:20I don't know why I ask you.
- 20:21It's always the same, which is good.
- 20:23But what I'm saying is there's a lot of jostling between it wasn't just biotech.
- 20:27It's now you've got to be selective because of the elevated levels of
- 20:31valuations.
- 20:33That's my opinion.
- 20:35But you've got a good portfolio.
- 20:37That's good.
- 20:39And talking about good portfolios, I was watching LinkedIn the other day and up
- 20:39popped
- 20:41David Shapiro with the challenge, the 2026 challenge that you got.
- 20:46What's it called?
- 20:47The Crystal, tell me about it please.
- 20:49The Crystal Challenge.
- 20:50Crystal Challenge, yeah.
- 20:52We're finding sponsors.
- 20:55The story behind it in very simple terms is that during COVID I invited 10 people
- 21:01on
- 21:01Twitter. It was Pitfellion and Julieta and so on just to choose five stocks.
- 21:08Let's have an internal competition.
- 21:10Give me five stocks for the year and we'll measure it over a year.
- 21:13And whoever wins out of the 10 of us, I'll give you a bottle of Christelle champagne,
- 21:20which is the top end of
- 21:22Louis Rotorat.
- 21:24So anyway, five outsiders saw this, one of which is Betsy Skopp,
- 21:28who was a musician, and she muscled her way in.
- 21:31And there were 15 of us, and she won it, hands down.
- 21:35And it was great.
- 21:36But what happened, it captured the imagination of other people.
- 21:39Lindsay, it's a simple competition.
- 21:41Choose five stops.
- 21:42That's it.
- 21:43And can I do it as an overseas resident?
- 21:45Can I still enter?
- 21:46Well, they've got to be South African.
- 21:48Yeah, of course, anybody.
- 21:50South African stocks.
- 21:52It has to be South African stocks, but I can enter the competition, can I?
- 21:55Yeah, yeah.
- 21:56It's a simple entry form on our website.
- 21:59There's nothing complicated.
- 22:00We don't need verification.
- 22:02What do you call it?
- 22:04Two-leg verifications.
- 22:06Just give us a list.
- 22:07Tell us what you do.
- 22:10So it's run that way.
- 22:11And it just grew from
- 22:1515 of us in 2021 to last year we had over
- 22:20440.
- 22:23Very nice.
- 22:23Nearly 450, yeah.
- 22:25And I can't believe how sensitive people are to what they choose.
- 22:29But what it does do is where it's a good exercise, Lindsay, is that we're talking
- 22:35now, okay?
- 22:37And we talk about South Africa.
- 22:38It's got to be.
- 22:39confined to South African stocks.
- 22:40We don't allow ETFs or anything like that.
- 22:43Just give me five names.
- 22:46So, perhaps you'll say to me, oh, I think banks are looking pretty cheap.
- 22:51I think the retailers are cheap.
- 22:53And we say that now.
- 22:55At the end of the year, boy, you have no idea where they'll be.
- 23:00And I think that's the lesson.
- 23:01And you can't chase them.
- 23:03You pick the stocks.
- 23:04You choose that you verify what the opening price was on.
- 23:08On what date is it?
- 23:08When does it start?
- 23:11We start on the 1st of February.
- 23:13It's real return.
- 23:14I mean, it's total return.
- 23:15So we add in any benefits that you can get like dividends and, you know, if there's a
- 23:22rights issue or something like this,
- 23:24we'll adjust.
- 23:26There could be a takeover, whatever.
- 23:28You know, I adjusted.
- 23:30I use fact sets.
- 23:32I use their total return formula.
- 23:34And so once you've got the spreadsheet up, it runs.
- 23:36Now, the variations are incredible.
- 23:38I mean, if you think five stocks out of the whole stock market,
- 23:42it leaves a lot of choices.
- 23:45But what happened is the chaps who won it last year, three different people when I
- 23:51say different,
- 23:52individual, they weren't connected in any way chose five stocks, five gold stocks
- 23:58and ran away with it.
- 24:01We had a fork out for three bottles of Three bottles of
- 24:06Cristal. Louis Roderick Cristal, very delicious.
- 24:09It's going at 6,000-7,000 a bottle.
- 24:12Not bad.
- 24:14So that's all we do.
- 24:16I mean it's simple.
- 24:17We allow you to cash out one.
- 24:20Sometimes while we do that is sometimes either a share is falling and you say I've
- 24:27had enough or alternatively it's running up too high and you say
- 24:29I'm good out of here.
- 24:31And you can't reinvest it, you just take the cash.
- 24:32Otherwise, it becomes an administrative monster.
- 24:37Well, that's good fun.
- 24:37I'm going to go to SESFIN.
- 24:39And I'm the only one who can run it.
- 24:40Of course you are.
- 24:41What if you oh, no, I never say that.
- 24:43SESFINsecurities.co.za or what?
- 24:47What's the website?
- 24:48Dot com.
- 24:48Dot com.
- 24:49Yeah, SESFINsecurities.com.
- 24:51You'll find it on Crystal Challenge if you look it up there.
- 24:54But it's so we've got quite a big community.
- 24:58We're getting sponsored and
- 25:03There's a certain magazine, I don't want to say this yet because they want to cover
- 25:09it.
- 25:10We'll give them regular updates on how people are doing and so on.
- 25:15For whatever reason, it's the simplest of competitions but it does attract a lot of
- 25:20people.
- 25:20A lot of young people want to participate.
- 25:24That's a good sign though, isn't it?
- 25:25Yeah, because they follow it and also they can follow how badly professionals are
- 25:31doing.
- 25:31Just for the record book, I came about fourth or fifth last year.
- 25:37And the irony is that my wife Linda chose Southern Palladium for various reasons
- 25:44because my late brother
- 25:46was involved in a deal.
- 25:46He was acting as a lawyer for them.
- 25:48And she chose that which was the best performing stock even though she didn't
- 25:54come close to winning.
- 25:56It was the best performing stock.
- 25:56I chose Copper 360 which was the worst performing stock.
- 26:00That was a dog.
- 26:01Total dog.
- 26:03Went to 20 round a share, I seem to remember, shortly after listing.
- 26:07And what is it now?
- 26:08Two round or something?
- 26:09I don't know.
- 26:10Whatever it is.
- 26:11Oh, that sounds fun.
- 26:12Okay, I'm going to do that.
- 26:13That's the fun thing about it.
- 26:15You can't change your mind.
- 26:18No, you can't.
- 26:18Okay.
- 26:19And we make sure that we publish the lists all the time so you know where you are.
- 26:25Okay, David.
- 26:26We've done that.
- 26:27We've done tech.
- 26:28We've done Trump.
- 26:29We've done the Greenspan, not Greenspan, what's his name?
- 26:32Powell.
- 26:33Jerome Powell.
- 26:34Let's talk briefly about football.
- 26:35There was no league matches over the weekend in the English Premiership.
- 26:38It was the FA Challenge Cup as they call it, the world's oldest and greatest
- 26:45knockout competition.
- 26:47And it was quite fun.
- 26:49Arsenal won.
- 26:51The one that I liked of course was Macclesfield beating Crystal Palace.
- 26:51But even more...
- 26:53And even more enjoyable.
- 26:54You remember Crystal Palace won the Cup last year?
- 26:57Exactly, they're the holders.
- 26:58The first time since 1909 they've been knocked out by a non-league side.
- 27:02But the Man United-Brighton game was the one that really got me going because the
- 27:09crowd was so miserable at the
- 27:11end.
- 27:13I mean, I didn't feel sorry for them.
- 27:15It serves them right.
- 27:17But it was appalling how the mighty have fallen.
- 27:19Darren Fletcher in charge of a team worth 500 million quid.
- 27:23I know.
- 27:26I like to see big names and you like to see these companies doing well.
- 27:29I think if I look at Chelsea, if I look at Man United and I look at Spurs, I mean,
- 27:36Spurs are abominable.
- 27:38They also went out.
- 27:40Really,
- 27:42the fans go there and they just scream and shout and abuse.
- 27:50They're not even taking it in good humour like most companies.
- 27:54I think their senses of humour have run out by now, especially if you're a Spurs
- 27:58fan.
- 27:58I mean, the travesty that they're in the
- 28:01UEFA Champions League because they won that other silly little cup is remarkable.
- 28:07But yeah, there's three clubs, as you've rightly pointed out, Man United, Chelsea
- 28:13and Spurs,
- 28:15which should be or their leadership should be ashamed of themselves.
- 28:17Poor fans.
- 28:18Yeah.
- 28:18And you've got Sunderland making it.
- 28:20I mean, Sunderland playing great football, whatever, whether they can sustain it or
- 28:25not,
- 28:25it's probably one season and then they're in trouble again, whatever it is.
- 28:30But still,
- 28:33Spurs and the other clubs have got so much power and so much money and should be in a
- 28:40far better position.
- 28:42I don't know.
- 28:44There are lots of things lacking there.
- 28:46Okay, David, I'm just going to spend my evening now.
- 28:47in between watching Liverpool against Barnley, Barnsley, the last FA Cup third
- 28:50round game.
- 28:50I'm going to start picking some stocks.
- 28:53It's very interesting.
- 28:54You can't enter twice, can you?
- 28:55No.
- 28:56Well, you can enter into another name.
- 28:58We'd never know.
- 28:59You know, you've got a son and a daughter, whatever it is.
- 29:03We don't do deep checks.
- 29:07We take you at face value.
- 29:12David, thank you very much for...
- 29:14for your time as always david shapiro is from saturn securities and that was
- 29:20shapiro world
