- 0:00Speaker 1: Everyone on diesel and I'm about to start my Bootleg
- 0:03Speaker 1: Melancholy and Greatest Hits tour with my band all around
- 0:05Speaker 1: the country and you're on.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Heavy beautiful time, sir, thanks for joining us today. No
- 0:11Speaker 2: worries as you say about you reconvene the Bootleg Melancholy
- 0:16Speaker 2: Greatest Tips album to all this Friday, March the seventh, Mate,
- 0:19Speaker 2: So you're packed and ready to go.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I'm still packed from New Zealand. So just get rid
- 0:24Speaker 1: of dirty items, put clean items in.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you're just about having go bait ready these days,
- 0:29Speaker 2: wouldn't you just run in each state.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Words Always it's like it's there's the go bag and
- 0:35Speaker 1: then there's just the elements that get like swapped out
- 0:37Speaker 1: and washed. That's it. Oh, then you know there's there's
- 0:41Speaker 1: the perishable items that get used and have to be replenished,
- 0:44Speaker 1: so like my throat lozenges and all those boring things.
- 0:48Speaker 1: But yeah, it's it's like a sport, like a cricketer's
- 0:51Speaker 1: bag or a football player's bag on I imagine you know
- 0:54Speaker 1: you've got to have your bag with all your stuff
- 0:56Speaker 1: in it because you don't want to be thinking about
- 0:58Speaker 1: stuff when you get there. You just want to know
- 1:00Speaker 1: that everything is in the bag.
- 1:03Speaker 2: The Bag of Magic. That's a very extensive tour. I
- 1:08Speaker 2: travel through every state of Australia, starting in Victoria in
- 1:13Speaker 2: too up until early May. So do you still enjoy
- 1:16Speaker 2: touring as much as you do? Or does it does
- 1:18Speaker 2: it sort of does it become a bit a bit
- 1:21Speaker 2: laboursome after a while?
- 1:22Speaker 1: I guess, well, yeah, there's there are some things that
- 1:27Speaker 1: I've become more aware of that I don't like. And
- 1:31Speaker 1: I guess the good thing about that is you just
- 1:34Speaker 1: become more aware of you can let it bother you,
- 1:36Speaker 1: or you just become more aware of it and kind
- 1:38Speaker 1: of accept maybe or just do take take steps to
- 1:43Speaker 1: kind of avoid. That's the good thing about experience, I
- 1:46Speaker 1: suppose is when you first start, you just go on,
- 1:49Speaker 1: you know, why did that happen? Or what do you mean?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Blah blah blah, and you know, you kind of now
- 1:55Speaker 1: it's like I wouldn't say that there's very few, you know,
- 1:59Speaker 1: variables of surprising things. Is always like I think the
- 2:02Speaker 1: most challenging thing is like, you know, skip down to
- 2:06Speaker 1: the basics, watching the carousel go around and your gear
- 2:11Speaker 1: doesn't come out. That's like that's always like a good
- 2:13Speaker 1: start to the day. What just happened? And then you
- 2:17Speaker 1: know it's like okay, right, okay, where are we Okay,
- 2:21Speaker 1: call this person, call that person, call the music stores.
- 2:24Speaker 1: You know, you just start begging and boring, and then
- 2:28Speaker 1: you've got to you know, calculate. Okay, they're gonna it's
- 2:30Speaker 1: gonna come on that flight, but will it make it
- 2:32Speaker 1: to the gig and time in time for the cruider.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I mean, these are all things that have happened, and
- 2:36Speaker 1: the crowd they're not to know. It's not their problem,
- 2:40Speaker 1: you know, So that's always the biggest challenges. I mean,
- 2:43Speaker 1: you always allow plenty of time, of course, but then
- 2:46Speaker 1: it becomes like a sliding scale because it's like how
- 2:48Speaker 1: much time can you allow because you've got commitments before that.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And it's also the massive expense of like you know,
- 2:55Speaker 1: going the day before and all that because you've got
- 2:57Speaker 1: everyone on hold and you know you've got my day
- 3:00Speaker 1: and cars for an extra day. These are all big
- 3:02Speaker 1: factors for touring party and you know, I mean even
- 3:06Speaker 1: acts like Tom Jones I heard last time, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: because freight is so expensive. Everything is so expensive now
- 3:13Speaker 1: after the pandemic, like everything's gone up exponentially. You know,
- 3:17Speaker 1: they're they're coming down with very little and renting everything
- 3:19Speaker 1: because it's actually ultimately more more cost effective. And that's
- 3:24Speaker 1: that was kind of rare. Before it was like people
- 3:26Speaker 1: always wanted their own stuff, you know, but now we
- 3:29Speaker 1: have you know, there's a lot of people that have
- 3:33Speaker 1: what you need, so it's more of that sort of thing.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And we also don't lug around massive pas. Like when
- 3:39Speaker 1: I say we, I can actually say we because when
- 3:41Speaker 1: I started up, we were doing a lot of supports
- 3:43Speaker 1: and on the contract it would say must supply two loaders.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You know, you're getting paid a couple of hundred bucks
- 3:50Speaker 1: and must apply two loaders. Of course you could, you
- 3:53Speaker 1: could you know, pay some people to do that, but
- 3:55Speaker 1: then that goes all the money you've made, so the
- 3:58Speaker 1: band would have to do the loading when it came
- 4:01Speaker 1: to loading. And in one let's just like use one
- 4:05Speaker 1: example of like I remember turning up to Blacktown RSSEL
- 4:08Speaker 1: at the back of that RSL club. This is the
- 4:10Speaker 1: western suburbs of Sydney, and it looked like something like
- 4:14Speaker 1: something out of Egypt and the building of the Pyramids.
- 4:17Speaker 1: It was like eleven o'clock in the morning and there
- 4:19Speaker 1: was the truck doors were open. There were people going
- 4:23Speaker 1: up six flights of stairs with big black boxes and
- 4:27Speaker 1: you know, heaving and hoeing and sweating, and I just thought,
- 4:30Speaker 1: oh my god, looking and I looked at the stairs
- 4:32Speaker 1: and said, we're going to go up those and we did.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And you know, if you were lucky, they would sort
- 4:38Speaker 1: of have a bit of mercy on you, then we'd
- 4:39Speaker 1: give you the smaller items and whatever. But I remember
- 4:42Speaker 1: doing the gig that night. It was supporting Dragon, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: I was like, just finished everything I needed to do
- 4:49Speaker 1: in time, no sound check, just get on stage. My
- 4:52Speaker 1: hands were still covered in black paint from all the
- 4:55Speaker 1: boxes pm my guitar, and my hands were like my
- 4:58Speaker 1: fingers were stiff because they've been carrying things, so my
- 5:01Speaker 1: muscles were all like in spasm, you know sort of thing.
- 5:04Speaker 1: It was just like, Wow, got to do the gig,
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know. And Tommy Emmanuel was there that night, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: he's he gave some really beautiful praise. I can't remember
- 5:14Speaker 1: what he said, but it was just like his smile
- 5:17Speaker 1: and him saying something really nice and was like, oh,
- 5:19Speaker 1: that just made up for made up for everything. Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 1: And that was that was the norm. But so yeah.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I mean these days, I'm kind of I'm pretty kind
- 5:30Speaker 1: of aware of like what is it. The minute I
- 5:33Speaker 1: leave my house, I sort of know what the day
- 5:34Speaker 1: is going to be. And I've gotten really good at
- 5:38Speaker 1: kind of time management, I suppose, whereas when you first
- 5:40Speaker 1: start out, you've got no idea and then you trip
- 5:43Speaker 1: over yourself and you go, oh damn, I should have
- 5:45Speaker 1: eaten at that time, and now it's blah blah blah.
- 5:47Speaker 1: All those things can really mess up, you know, the
- 5:50Speaker 1: performance for me. So yeah, it's boring, I know, but
- 5:54Speaker 1: I pretty much sort of approach it like an athlete.
- 5:57Speaker 1: When I'm on gig days, it's all about this time
- 6:00Speaker 1: that at that time, getting my body as good as
- 6:03Speaker 1: it can possibly be, knowing that we're human and every day,
- 6:07Speaker 1: you know, you're not the same person. So yeah, but
- 6:11Speaker 1: I just want to be everything that I can be
- 6:13Speaker 1: for the time that I'm on stage, and then it's
- 6:17Speaker 1: like back in the little box, you know that again,
- 6:22Speaker 1: Put me back in the matchbox with the cotton wall
- 6:24Speaker 1: and just close it up.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yeah. So about for playing so many shows over the years,
- 6:29Speaker 2: made like do you get more excited and more pumped
- 6:32Speaker 2: by the actual crowd or by the music when you
- 6:35Speaker 2: plan it, the crowd of.
- 6:37Speaker 1: You know, they're the biggest. I mean, I can honestly,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I can honestly say that there's a difference in a room,
- 6:44Speaker 1: Like if we're rehearsing and one person walks in to
- 6:46Speaker 1: do some filming or something, or even just you know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: a friend or family or whatever walk in, I you know,
- 6:53Speaker 1: feel like I need to like do whatever it is
- 6:56Speaker 1: that I'm doing, I need to do even better. You know.
- 6:59Speaker 1: It's it's you know, they say that's like we're all hands,
- 7:01Speaker 1: you know, but I mean it probably is some of that.
- 7:04Speaker 1: But I just feel like it can be an audience
- 7:07Speaker 1: or an audience, you know, like just one, and it
- 7:10Speaker 1: doesn't matter. Just you know someone's listening. You want to
- 7:13Speaker 1: you want to give them something. It's an exchange, you know.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And I feel like even with my band on stage,
- 7:20Speaker 1: it's like, first and foremost, I want to make them happy.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I want them to to kind of groove on what
- 7:26Speaker 1: I'm doing, and so that's an exchange there. And we're
- 7:29Speaker 1: listening to each other and we're playing, and that that
- 7:32Speaker 1: has to happen before anything. It's it's you know that
- 7:36Speaker 1: it has been said many times It's like that whatever
- 7:39Speaker 1: it is that's coming out of the PA and going
- 7:41Speaker 1: into the room starts on stage first. You know, the
- 7:44Speaker 1: PA or the greatest sound guy in the world is
- 7:46Speaker 1: not going to like make something out of a mess
- 7:49Speaker 1: on stage.
- 7:52Speaker 2: You might actually be able to help clear up a
- 7:53Speaker 2: debate I had the other day mate, because you mentioned
- 7:55Speaker 2: sound checking people watching like, is it is it edit
- 7:58Speaker 2: it to clafter the song at sound checked or is
- 8:01Speaker 2: that like like when you if you're watching someone do
- 8:05Speaker 2: sound check, is it edit like it after they finished
- 8:07Speaker 2: the song at sound check? Is it still etiquette to clap.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Or is it? Oh? Totally Yeah.
- 8:13Speaker 2: The other day it's just like that, No, you shouldn't
- 8:14Speaker 2: clap because they're only warming up with it. It's like, yeah,
- 8:16Speaker 2: but you'll show appreciation. You know.
- 8:19Speaker 1: It's really nice even when the venue people are in
- 8:21Speaker 1: the venue and they're you know, doing whatever they have
- 8:23Speaker 1: to do, just walking around the room getting the room ready,
- 8:26Speaker 1: you know, and you finish something and you hear this
- 8:28Speaker 1: clap and you look up and it's a venue posted
- 8:30Speaker 1: and there, you know, giving the thumbs up. That's always
- 8:32Speaker 1: really nice because once the gig gets going, that's not
- 8:35Speaker 1: going to be able to happen, you know. So it's
- 8:39Speaker 1: really nice that they've they acknowledge and they know that
- 8:42Speaker 1: that's their time to kind of like their little space
- 8:45Speaker 1: before the gig, and they've still got some space in
- 8:47Speaker 1: their brain to even like listen to what you're doing
- 8:50Speaker 1: and and and enjoy it and and and give you
- 8:53Speaker 1: a shout out. So that's that's that really means a
- 8:57Speaker 1: lot to me. And it always it's almost like, ah,
- 9:00Speaker 1: things are going to be good. You know. It's like
- 9:02Speaker 1: if we just got clapped by the venue person, that
- 9:04Speaker 1: means Granda, have a good night.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Good to hear I won that debate, then.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I could be glad.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Don't you mentioned your band before?
- 9:15Speaker 1: Matum.
- 9:15Speaker 2: This isn't a solo choy, You're playing as a whole band,
- 9:18Speaker 2: so introduce.
- 9:19Speaker 1: It to you guys. Well, I've been with Lee Maloney
- 9:22Speaker 1: on drums, So Lee was he was recommended to me
- 9:27Speaker 1: from another drummer, and this particular drummer being Rob Hurst
- 9:33Speaker 1: from Midnight Oil. So I'd work with Rob on an
- 9:37Speaker 1: Olympics album with Rick Rossman from the bass play from
- 9:40Speaker 1: Hoodi Gurus and the Vinyls before that, and they brought
- 9:43Speaker 1: me in to kind of work on some tracks for
- 9:45Speaker 1: this Olympics when Australia had the Olympics and I was
- 9:49Speaker 1: living in New York and did that, and then I
- 9:52Speaker 1: don't know, like maybe a month or two later, I
- 9:54Speaker 1: just got a call from Rob one night. I think
- 9:57Speaker 1: he was back in Australia because the call was quite late.
- 10:00Speaker 1: He's like, Rob Hurst here. Oh, I forgot to mention.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I just wanted to say, if you're ever looking for
- 10:04Speaker 1: a drummer, I know just the drummer for you. And
- 10:07Speaker 1: I was like okay, And I thought, well, if Rob's
- 10:09Speaker 1: recommending a drummer, I should probably pay attention. So when
- 10:12Speaker 1: I was back in Australia doing a video for a
- 10:14Speaker 1: song called Satellite on this Soul Lost Companion album, and
- 10:18Speaker 1: I needed a drummer for a video, and I thought
- 10:22Speaker 1: this is kind of weird. It's like, I hope he
- 10:23Speaker 1: doesn't mind, but can you come in mind some drums?
- 10:28Speaker 1: And yeah, it was. It was just like a friendship.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Straight away. I just thought this guy's number one. He's beautiful,
- 10:37Speaker 1: you know, beautiful personality. And he nailed the mime. He
- 10:42Speaker 1: learned all the parts really like surgically and meticulously. And
- 10:48Speaker 1: then we came time to auditioning, and I had a
- 10:51Speaker 1: few people lined up and I auditioned him and the
- 10:54Speaker 1: bass player on which I'm going to tell you about
- 10:56Speaker 1: in a second. And I called my manager and I said,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I know it's really rude on the day, but can
- 11:00Speaker 1: we just like cancel everyone else? I'm good, I've found
- 11:02Speaker 1: my band. And he was like, okay, you know it
- 11:05Speaker 1: was like a little bit like gee, you know, like
- 11:08Speaker 1: that's a bit dangerous, but I knew. And yeah, that
- 11:11Speaker 1: was twenty three years ago, twenty four actually, because that
- 11:15Speaker 1: was two thousand and one that I met Lee. And
- 11:18Speaker 1: he's played on pretty much every record, even the ones
- 11:22Speaker 1: in the Pandemic, well one record, I should say in
- 11:25Speaker 1: the Pandemic, because the blues record. I actually played the
- 11:27Speaker 1: drums on that because we were really in lockdown. And
- 11:31Speaker 1: then when I came time to like we opened up
- 11:33Speaker 1: and we were allowed to have like one person in
- 11:35Speaker 1: the house, I said to Lee, like, can you come
- 11:38Speaker 1: over and slap some drums on some of these songs
- 11:40Speaker 1: on bootleg Melancholy? And yeah, it was It was handy
- 11:45Speaker 1: because he lives not far from me, and we've just
- 11:47Speaker 1: got a great language. And yeah, he's like he's like
- 11:51Speaker 1: the mule. I always used this analogy of like that
- 11:54Speaker 1: you know is always going to get you up the mountain,
- 11:56Speaker 1: no matter what you know, He'll just always get you there.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And Richie Ves was recommended by another amazing bass player.
- 12:09Speaker 1: So Michael Hegetty has played with a lot of people.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Let's just start with Richard Clapton back on those amazing
- 12:14Speaker 1: recordings like Deep Order and Capricorn Dancer and that whole period.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And he was super super young at that point. And
- 12:24Speaker 1: then I just remember Jimmy was looking for a bass
- 12:27Speaker 1: player and was just pretty much stole him from Richard's
- 12:31Speaker 1: gig that that particular year. But Richard's you know, he
- 12:36Speaker 1: loves having lots of different people play. He loves the
- 12:39Speaker 1: he loves the difference that he gets when he uses
- 12:41Speaker 1: different people, and he celebrates he just celebrates great musicians,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and we all respect him as an amazing songwriter. And
- 12:50Speaker 1: but I think it's you know, it has to be
- 12:53Speaker 1: said that he has actually nurtured so many players as well.
- 12:55Speaker 1: He's like a he's like a factory or or or
- 12:58Speaker 1: more maybe factory, but a like a like a market
- 13:02Speaker 1: garden of growing things that are just being nurtured. And
- 13:06Speaker 1: it's constantly being replenished. And yeah, a lot of a
- 13:09Speaker 1: lot of people have gone through his his his his
- 13:13Speaker 1: school of music. So yeah, and then yeah, Michael called me.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Of course I've got to know Michael playing by him
- 13:21Speaker 1: playing with in Jimmy Barnes's band. But he said the
- 13:25Speaker 1: same thing, Man, I've seen the bass player for you.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I know this guy is perfect for your gig. And
- 13:29Speaker 1: he was right. I mean, when when people that are
- 13:31Speaker 1: like that, I respect so much, like that, you know,
- 13:37Speaker 1: kind of recommend people. It's it's it makes my makes
- 13:39Speaker 1: my job really easy. That's what.
- 13:48Speaker 2: The press release refers to it being a two set tour.
- 13:50Speaker 2: So does that mean you're playing two sets in one
- 13:53Speaker 2: night or you're doing.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I mean normally would have you know, you
- 13:58Speaker 1: have a support and then an intermission. So basically we're
- 14:01Speaker 1: just doing both of the sets with an intermission. So
- 14:03Speaker 1: there's no support, which means I've got more time to
- 14:07Speaker 1: get to more songs from more records basically, and of
- 14:10Speaker 1: course we get to all it, you know, we get
- 14:12Speaker 1: to all the hits. But I mean, thankfully I've you know,
- 14:14Speaker 1: I put out the greatest hits in twenty eighteen. It
- 14:17Speaker 1: was like an update of the greatest hits that came
- 14:19Speaker 1: out in nineteen ninety seven, I think called rewind. So
- 14:23Speaker 1: at that point I had thirty singles all charting, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 1: so I've got a lot of singles, and people like
- 14:30Speaker 1: might know me of like from you know, like this
- 14:33Speaker 1: song or that song or maybe you know this many
- 14:35Speaker 1: songs whatever. But there's actually when they come to a
- 14:37Speaker 1: show they realize it's like, oh my god, d I
- 14:39Speaker 1: didn't realize I knew so many of his songs. But
- 14:41Speaker 1: that's that's you know, not a bad thing. It's a
- 14:44Speaker 1: good thing.
- 14:45Speaker 2: And have you got a process of putting them together
- 14:47Speaker 2: into the two sets? So do you just randomly throw
- 14:48Speaker 2: them in there?
- 14:50Speaker 1: Now? I kind of I like to make little little
- 14:53Speaker 1: you know. It's a bit like a menu, you know.
- 14:55Speaker 1: He sort of like a bit of this and then
- 14:56Speaker 1: kind of like change it up, cleanse the palette a
- 14:59Speaker 1: bit with this. I don't like to kind of stay
- 15:02Speaker 1: on one kind of groove for too long, you know,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you kind of you you sort of like get them
- 15:08Speaker 1: hyped up and then you soothe them, and then you
- 15:11Speaker 1: hype them up again, then you chill them out in
- 15:13Speaker 1: this way, and it's it's all kind of a bit
- 15:14Speaker 1: of a roller coast of a roller coaster ride, but
- 15:18Speaker 1: it has to have a linear element to it as well.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean I'm not too thankfully I don't
- 15:27Speaker 1: have a lot of songs in the same key. Maybe
- 15:30Speaker 1: I do have. I do like the key of B.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Though I've been told by someone you've got a lot
- 15:35Speaker 1: of songs and B. I'm like, okay, I got a
- 15:37Speaker 1: lot of songs in G and C and D and
- 15:40Speaker 1: E as well B. But yeah, it's like, but I
- 15:46Speaker 1: am conscious of that. I see, like, oh my god,
- 15:49Speaker 1: there's three songs all in B there. I don't know
- 15:51Speaker 1: if people actually recognize that. I think it's a muse
- 15:53Speaker 1: tho thing. I really don't think people give a rat,
- 15:58Speaker 1: especially if they're different, you know, feels and stuff.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Not those of buying tickets, including those who have already
- 16:08Speaker 2: purchased tickets, are automatically gone into the draw to when
- 16:11Speaker 2: a signe Fender, Squire, Sonic, Strata Caster Electric at every
- 16:15Speaker 2: single show bro that was about, well, I've got a.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Really good relationship with Fender. And in the pandemic it
- 16:24Speaker 1: was a post bushfires that we had everywhere in the country.
- 16:28Speaker 1: There was a lot of volunteer and actual firefighters that
- 16:32Speaker 1: that's their job, you know, full time. But there was
- 16:34Speaker 1: a lot of volunteers that had never seen anything like that,
- 16:37Speaker 1: and they were suffering from a lot of PTSD, and
- 16:40Speaker 1: so we thought it might be nice thing if we
- 16:41Speaker 1: did like online zoom guitar lessons and oh and give
- 16:46Speaker 1: them a guitar first as well. I think Yamaha helped
- 16:49Speaker 1: out in that. And everyone got like nylon string guitars
- 16:51Speaker 1: so they didn't hurt their fingers and mine are going
- 16:53Speaker 1: to hurt their fingers by the way, but because they're
- 16:57Speaker 1: steel strings. But it was just the sid I guess
- 17:00Speaker 1: got planted in my head. That's like, you know, this
- 17:02Speaker 1: giving guitars to people that like probably are going to say, oh, no,
- 17:06Speaker 1: I don't I don't play, it's not my thing, or
- 17:08Speaker 1: like I'm not musical. It's like that's actually who you
- 17:10Speaker 1: want to give them too, because I don't believe it's exclusive.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I think everyone can get some fun and joy out
- 17:17Speaker 1: of just grabbing a guitar and putting their fingers in
- 17:20Speaker 1: a certain place and then just hitting it here and
- 17:23Speaker 1: just hearing it. It's it's you know, it's cathartic, and yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 1: I really believe that's for everyone. They might they might not,
- 17:33Speaker 1: you know, make a career out of it or whatever.
- 17:34Speaker 1: But every guitar, every house, I say, should have a guitar,
- 17:41Speaker 1: like they have a vacuum clean or a toaster or
- 17:43Speaker 1: whatever it is. It's it's necessary appliance.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Surely that at the end of the your too, mate.
- 17:51Speaker 2: You spoke about the guitar lessons before, but one lucky
- 17:54Speaker 2: person is going to win a one on one zoom
- 17:56Speaker 2: guitar lesson with your good self.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Yeah, well that could be interesting because it'd be funny
- 18:02Speaker 1: if it goes to someone who's actually like just can
- 18:05Speaker 1: play Rings around the Sun and I'm just like, oh,
- 18:07Speaker 1: maybe you can show me something, you know, different chords.
- 18:10Speaker 1: That'd be that'd be really cool actually, But yeah, look,
- 18:15Speaker 1: it's it's challenging teaching. It's all a few times I've
- 18:20Speaker 1: done you know, workshops or it just taught my my family,
- 18:24Speaker 1: you know, my nieces, nephews or whatever. It really makes
- 18:27Speaker 1: me kind of have to think about what I'm doing.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And it's kind of fun but also very challenging. You know.
- 18:33Speaker 1: It's like, damn, I do this every day and I've
- 18:35Speaker 1: never tried to think about it or show someone, and
- 18:38Speaker 1: I think, yeah, being a teacher is a talent. Any
- 18:42Speaker 1: music teacher. I just take my hat off to. I
- 18:44Speaker 1: think that's like that's a real talent. It really is
- 18:48Speaker 1: to be able to like turn it into tangible pieces
- 18:51Speaker 1: that people can actually take something from, because I'm like,
- 18:54Speaker 1: I just want to play, you know, and I've been.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Like, this is how you do it?
- 19:00Speaker 1: Daughter and my son. You know, when I try to
- 19:02Speaker 1: teach some things, they're like, dad, Dad, stop you getting
- 19:04Speaker 1: carried away.
- 19:05Speaker 2: You know you're ripping into a solo or.
- 19:08Speaker 1: You know, I just get lost in the moment. You know,
- 19:10Speaker 1: it's like just just hearing the guitar just sends me somewhere,
- 19:14Speaker 1: you know.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Just to clarify with that too, Like for that one,
- 19:18Speaker 2: I want zoom with you, Like, that's not all the
- 19:20Speaker 2: winners of the guitars coming, everyone's it's picked out.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Once we have all the winners and one lucky win
- 19:28Speaker 1: and will we picked from that drawn? Yeah, we're using
- 19:33Speaker 1: We're using an algorithmic. You know, it's not just like
- 19:36Speaker 1: lit like picked out like that some kind of some
- 19:39Speaker 1: kind of app that does it randomly.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Well, I think I've always wanted to ask you, mate,
- 19:44Speaker 2: which I've never have for some reason, whether it's because
- 19:46Speaker 2: we've been cat short or whatever reason. But when you
- 19:49Speaker 2: first started, like I remember seeing you up on the
- 19:51Speaker 2: Gold Coast Spit behind SeaWorld playing with but Jimmy Barnes
- 19:56Speaker 2: one year that was in But you were just playing guitar,
- 20:00Speaker 2: Like what you You just played guitar? But did you
- 20:04Speaker 2: always want to sing as Wallad? Was that sort of
- 20:06Speaker 2: thrown on you and you had to learn it?
- 20:08Speaker 1: Well? I don't want to correct you, but I definitely
- 20:10Speaker 1: would have been in my You probably you're I only
- 20:17Speaker 1: toured with Jimmy doing the support that was That was
- 20:19Speaker 1: actually the deal when I say the deal. That was
- 20:23Speaker 1: when Jimmy approached me after seeing us play at this
- 20:26Speaker 1: tiny little gig in Sydney, the Sydney in the spit
- 20:30Speaker 1: near the Spit Bridge called the Middle Harbor Skiff Club,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and he was like, yeah, like I need a guitar
- 20:38Speaker 1: player join my band, And I was like, I basically
- 20:41Speaker 1: said no. I said no, I can't. I've just brought
- 20:43Speaker 1: my band across the Noble. Then him and my manager
- 20:46Speaker 1: kind of gone into discussion and we're like, what about
- 20:48Speaker 1: doing the support. That was Jimmy's idea, how about you
- 20:51Speaker 1: you do the support and then you can do And
- 20:53Speaker 1: my manager looked at me and I went, yeah, okay,
- 20:54Speaker 1: well that works, you know, because I'm not leaving my band.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And Jimmy totally understand that. He was like it was
- 21:01Speaker 1: almost like, oh, yeah, of course I should have thought
- 21:03Speaker 1: of that. He was just so super keen, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 1: and yeah, that's that's that's kind of how we got
- 21:09Speaker 1: to a lot of people, and on on that and
- 21:12Speaker 1: that next you know, eight months. It was only eight
- 21:14Speaker 1: months that I was in the band, but it really
- 21:16Speaker 1: got us to a lot of people, which was pretty handy. Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 2: So if you're singing your first joy or his playing.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I'm probably singing because it's I don't need any equipment.
- 21:27Speaker 1: You know, I love guitar, but you know, it's it's
- 21:31Speaker 1: it's like it's it's really hard to say which one
- 21:33Speaker 1: I prefer, but I'd have to say the voice, but
- 21:35Speaker 1: for the simple fact that it's just pure and I
- 21:38Speaker 1: don't need to get strings or batteries or.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Carried stuff upstairs. Now, this tool finishes in Mayo. As
- 21:49Speaker 2: we say, you think you've got the show at the
- 21:52Speaker 2: Broad Beach Blues Festival in Queensland on May sixteenth. It's
- 21:55Speaker 2: been announced as well. But after that pretty much winds
- 21:58Speaker 2: you up, like what's extra dese after that you didn't
- 22:01Speaker 2: take a bit of a break.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Finally, Yeah, a little break, and then I'm going to
- 22:04Speaker 1: do a buy request probably a lot of regional areas,
- 22:08Speaker 1: places like Final with Queensland, which I haven't been two
- 22:12Speaker 1: in five years. I think it is. It's just unbelievable
- 22:16Speaker 1: because I for about eight or ten years there, I'd
- 22:19Speaker 1: always go to Final, Queensland every year in the winter
- 22:21Speaker 1: time and it was like a tradition thing for me
- 22:25Speaker 1: to get to those people up there and to escape
- 22:27Speaker 1: the cold for a few weeks. And I haven't been
- 22:32Speaker 1: up there for Yeah. I think if you talk to
- 22:34Speaker 1: any musician this country, they'd probably tell you things like
- 22:36Speaker 1: that since the pandemic has taken big chunks out of
- 22:39Speaker 1: their touring calendar. So I'm yeah, I'm going to do
- 22:42Speaker 1: this a buy request solo thing, and then I'll probably
- 22:45Speaker 1: release another record shortly after. So I've been working on
- 22:48Speaker 1: that through this year.
- 22:49Speaker 2: So record this year.
- 22:54Speaker 1: If it doesn't come out before Christmas, it's going to
- 22:57Speaker 1: be Yeah. I mean when I say before Christmas, like
- 23:00Speaker 1: Tober because those next months after that are just like
- 23:03Speaker 1: a bit of a crazy, crazy write off. But yeah,
- 23:06Speaker 1: it'll be very early in the next year when I
- 23:08Speaker 1: say when kids go back to school, because that's when
- 23:11Speaker 1: the year really starts. Right.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Well, good to finally catch up with you again, my friend.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I will thank you after the Broadbeat show and Saya.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking forward to Blues on Broadbach. It's it's
- 23:23Speaker 1: one of my favorite, if not the favorite blues best
- 23:26Speaker 1: that I get to to get to play. It's the environment. Yeah,
- 23:31Speaker 1: the whole vibe of it is super relaxed and cruisy
- 23:34Speaker 1: and and it's just yeah, get to see some great
- 23:36Speaker 1: people too. And the masterclass that I'm doing. I'm looking
- 23:38Speaker 1: forward to that because I don't get to really kind of,
- 23:43Speaker 1: you know, talk about what I do. And you know,
- 23:45Speaker 1: it's fun especially if people ask, you know, provocative questions.
- 23:51Speaker 2: To find prop bocketing.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Well, get the challenging to me, you know that, like
- 23:56Speaker 1: make me really think about what it is that I do.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you get so many generic questions over the ears,
- 24:02Speaker 2: wouldn't you, you know, almost autopilot.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Sometimes it's good. I love those people that go because
- 24:07Speaker 1: they've got some burning thing or but even if they
- 24:09Speaker 1: don't even have an inclination of asking a question, and they
- 24:12Speaker 1: get there and they suddenly are inspired to sort of like,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I want to know this, you know, I can tell
- 24:18Speaker 1: those people, I can tell it's you know. Then there's
- 24:20Speaker 1: then there's you know, sadly there's there might be hopefully not,
- 24:24Speaker 1: but there's usually someone who just likes the sound of
- 24:26Speaker 1: their own voice as well.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I got the microphone, buddy, shut up.
- 24:33Speaker 1: No, not too many of those, not too many of those, thankfully,
