• 0:10
weekly moment of off the Cup commentary on everything from sports and politics to observations
• 0:16
about everyday life from NFL all Pro Carl Lee. Welcome to Overtime. Hello
• 0:24
ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee, and this is I'm in my
• 0:27
overtime segment and just want to talk a little bit about the women's basketball we
• 0:38
we talked about it on the show earlier in the in the right prior to
• 0:45
and one of the things that I I've noticed as a former athlete, as
• 0:54
a former professional athlete, and watching the collegiate level at the and just at
• 1:00
the D one level, the Major D one level, you know, watching
• 1:06
Iowa and USC and all those types of teams play. The amazing thing to
• 1:14
me about it is the intensity in which the women play from start to finish.
• 1:23
Like I was watching all the emotion after the game of the winners and
• 1:33
even even at even even Iowa as they lost the game, they kind of
• 1:38
held their heads high. They I'm sure they're probably with some tears but I
• 1:46
but it was. It was It was interesting to me of watching Caitlin being
• 1:51
able to just kind of hold her head up walk out end her career with
• 1:57
their head up. I thought that I thought that was an amazing scene to
• 2:04
me, you know, kind of her walking away from the collegiate game.
• 2:10
The interesting piece for me is where does this go? Because I mean,
• 2:16
this was, this was huge. I mean this this season with women's basketball
• 2:23
was huge. And again the audience is bigger than professional basketball, men's professional
• 2:36
basketball. The only thing really that it doesn't top it's football, and football
• 2:43
is the obviously is the number one viewed sport. But this is this is
• 2:51
not men's This is not the men's game. This is the women's game.
• 2:58
And the exciting thing to me about about all these young ladies and all the
• 3:05
the notoriety that they're getting is that the young ladies that are playing middle school,
• 3:15
high school, youth basketball, they get to watch these these ladies play,
• 3:23
and now they get an opportunity to dream to one day be one of
• 3:30
these superstars or even be on on the team, be on the bench,
• 3:36
just to be sitting there to watch, to be part of of the game.
• 3:44
I think that I think that for for the young ladies that participate in
• 3:51
basketball or even in any sport. I think what we've what these what these
• 3:57
ladies are doing are they are setting a an example, a role models for
• 4:05
these young ladies to now say, I want to be like man, we've
• 4:11
had that, We've had it forever, you know, you know, we
• 4:15
could have our own. You know, myself, I had Robert Alexander,
• 4:19
who was you know, just three years ahead of me, and I could
• 4:24
I could view him. Now. These young ladies can have that same structure.
• 4:31
They can they they can look the middle school or elementary can look up
• 4:35
to to high school, and high school can look up to D one and
• 4:40
look up to to professional the professional ranks. And I just think that when
• 4:46
you when you have that, when you see it, it's one thing to
• 4:54
play it, but when you watch someone who's doing it at a greater,
• 5:00
higher level, you dream to be, You set a goal to be.
• 5:05
Your entire being wants you to be that person. You want to become that
• 5:14
person. You want to become that good, that great, And the key
• 5:19
to that is the work ethic that comes with it. Because when you think
• 5:27
about when you think about the three point shots that we saw in this game,
• 5:34
not just from hour but from both teams. They weren't right at the
• 5:41
three point line. You know, you're talking like ten feet away in between
• 5:47
half court and the three point line. How many times do you have to
• 5:51
shoot that shot to even think that you can make it? What coach is
• 5:57
even going to let you take that shot in a game and not take you
• 6:01
out if you miss it or even if you make it. And I just
• 6:05
think when you look at when you start to look at these great female athletes,
• 6:14
don't overlook the work ethic that they're putting in. Because you're not just
• 6:20
going to be one of those young ladies. You're not just gonna just get
• 6:26
there. You gotta put some time in. You got to put the work
• 6:29
in. And we were talking off air before the overtime about, you know,
• 6:35
sports as a whole, about working hard, the efforts that you have
• 6:41
to put in. You know, whether it's the coach's effort and the kid's
• 6:45
effort and the parents understanding those efforts, those things have to all come together
• 6:54
to find a measure of success. You're not just gonna They're very few athletes,
• 7:00
very few athletes, no matter how great they are now, are not
• 7:06
spending time on their craft. Somebody's shooting a million threes every day, somebody's
• 7:16
dribbling every day, somebody's working on footwork every day. Somebody's throwing a football
• 7:21
every day, somebody's catching a football every day. And what are you?
• 7:27
And the question you have to ask yourself is what are you doing for your
• 7:30
craft for you to be better and to have that opportunity to be great?
• 7:38
Point being, we have to put in time. It's great to be able
• 7:46
to talk about greatness. It's great to sit down and watch it, but
• 7:50
if you want it, you've got to put some time in it and work
• 7:56
ethic behind it to where you can be better than most people. That's the
• 8:03
only way that works. You don't get the opportunity to just walk through every
• 8:11
great athlete. And the two I'll go back to my go tos, the
• 8:16
two best backs in the nation that came out of West Virginia. I know
• 8:22
their work ethic. They didn't get to be the best player, the best
• 8:26
running back in the country, or the best player in the country by just
• 8:31
waking up and just going to practice, going to the game, going to
• 8:37
practice, going to the game. No, they put in a whole host
• 8:41
of work every day. And I've made the point of you know, sixteen
• 8:52
eighteen week training for four weeks of camp for sixteen games. That's that's work,
• 9:03
and that's the work that it requires to to be great. And when
• 9:09
you watch these young ladies, don't just watch, don't just watch their play,
• 9:18
take a minute and think about because we want to be them. Those
• 9:22
are the goal setters, those are the images that we that we subscribe to
• 9:28
that oh gosh, I want to be like her one day. I want
• 9:31
to be like him one day. The worst part about it is we don't
• 9:35
get to see their work ethic. But trust me when I tell you there
• 9:39
is one. And if you're out there and you want to play sports and
• 9:43
you want to be great at it, find you a work ethic one that
• 9:48
breaks you down almost every day, and see where it takes you. That's
• 9:58
my that's that's my thinking. That's my gift to you to try to understand
• 10:05
how you find greatness. All right, have a good day, and we'll
• 10:09
be back with you again next week. The opinions expressed on this program do
