- 0:06Jared King, born October 24th, 1992. May 24th,
- 0:14that was Nick's October 25th. You got me, brother.
- 0:17I can mess up on that because I got 25th and
- 0:20the 24th. You're right. May 24th, 1992. I got
- 0:24saved October 24th of 1992. So anyway. Jared
- 0:30graduated from Caring University with a bachelor's
- 0:33degree, a master's in Christian counseling, and
- 0:35a master's of divinity. To see how God has raised
- 0:40this young man in his ways and through his word
- 0:45is quite remarkable. I've had the privilege to
- 0:49be at his ordination and also to be able to speak
- 0:52at his ordination. So without further ado, my
- 0:56son, Pastor Jared Cain. Good morning, church.
- 1:00Can you hear me? Am I on? Yeah, there we go.
- 1:04When my dad asked me to come and open up 1 John
- 1:07chapter 1, as I understand it, you guys are going
- 1:11to be in there. I'm excited about it. I was like,
- 1:14of course. But let's read it together so you'd
- 1:20open your Bibles up to John. 1 John chapter 1.
- 1:24My dad said the whole chapter. It's only 10 verses.
- 1:30Try to be a person of brevity. I will try this
- 1:35morning. But we'll read it and we'll pray together.
- 1:421 John 1. That which was from the beginning,
- 1:46which we have heard, which we have seen with
- 1:49our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched
- 1:53with our hands concerning the word of life, the
- 1:56life was made manifest, and we have seen it.
- 2:00and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal
- 2:03life, which was with the Father and was made
- 2:07manifest to us. That which we have seen and heard,
- 2:10we proclaim also to you, so that you may have
- 2:14fellowship with us. And indeed, our fellowship
- 2:16is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.
- 2:21And we are writing these things so that our joy
- 2:24may be complete. This is the message we have
- 2:28heard from Him and proclaim to you that God is
- 2:30light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we
- 2:34say that we have fellowship with Him while we
- 2:36walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice
- 2:39the truth. But if we walk the light as He is
- 2:41in the light, we have fellowship with one another
- 2:43and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us
- 2:45from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive
- 2:49ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess
- 2:51our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive
- 2:54us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 2:59If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar
- 3:02and his word is not in us. Let's pray. Father,
- 3:09we thank you. We thank you for this morning.
- 3:12I pray that you would show up. We are helpless.
- 3:15We need you. And if you don't show up, none of
- 3:20this happens. And so we pray that you would do
- 3:24a work in us through your word, that you would
- 3:26show us yourself, that you would show us our
- 3:30Savior, you would show us ourselves, that you
- 3:33would make this book live to us. Amen. It really
- 3:39is my pleasure to be with all of you, brothers
- 3:41and sisters, today. And I echo the words from
- 3:44John. from this chapter, that we may have fellowship
- 3:47with each other. And I come with this message
- 3:50so that our joy, that is our joy, may be complete.
- 3:56So like when I said my dad asked me to come preach,
- 3:59I was more than happy to do so, especially from
- 4:02John's epistle. And what we heard and see and
- 4:05touch before us in this text is relevant for
- 4:09us today. First, consider John's day. His letter
- 4:14was written around A .D. 70, maybe A .D. 80,
- 4:19the year where the Romans destroyed the temple.
- 4:21Around that time, he is writing to a church that
- 4:24is both scattered and riddled with false teaching,
- 4:27a culture steeped in syncretism, meaning a melding
- 4:31of different religions together, a culture steeped
- 4:34in Gnosticism, meaning there were people in the
- 4:36church claiming the way to get to God was through
- 4:40a secret knowledge. Like it was this mystic kind
- 4:45of thing. There was confusion in the church and
- 4:48the culture at large about who Jesus was and
- 4:51if he really mattered, that Jesus was actually
- 4:55who he said he was, that he actually rose from
- 4:58the dead, that he didn't rise from the dead.
- 5:00The opponents of the church were teaching that
- 5:02Jesus was just, he was a good teacher, but maybe
- 5:06he wasn't really God. That God was just spiritual.
- 5:11And he didn't send his son Jesus to redeem sinful
- 5:15man. That even it was possible to transcend sin
- 5:20itself, right? On their own merit and their own
- 5:25accord and can potentially live without sin.
- 5:29You see where I'm going? They were undermining
- 5:33our Lord. You might say, this doesn't happen
- 5:37today. It does. I go to the gym five times a
- 5:44week, and I talk to the same guys, and my, like,
- 5:50scope of just, like, evangelism has just opened
- 5:54up. The Lord's just been opening doors. There's
- 5:57this old man, his name is Henry, and he's this
- 6:01conservative guy you can get, you know, on the
- 6:07right side of the aisle. But he's an atheist.
- 6:13He hates Jesus because Jesus didn't heal his
- 6:16mom before she passed. And so his thing is like,
- 6:22Jesus was a good teacher, and I can get down
- 6:25with Jesus' teachings, but he can't be that good.
- 6:35Right? He can't be God of the universe. There's
- 6:38this other gentleman, his name is Corey. Grew
- 6:40up in the church. He's divorced from his wife.
- 6:46He has an estranged relationship with his daughter.
- 6:49He's a younger guy, a little older than me. I'm
- 6:5334. And he's kind of the same way. Jesus is a
- 6:58good teacher. And all we need is Jesus' teachings
- 7:01in the Gospels, the rest of the Bible. That's
- 7:05not God's teaching. Right, kind of this syncretism,
- 7:10this kind of like confusion on who God says that
- 7:14he is. You know, and you know, not only, maybe
- 7:20you have a Henry or a Corey. Or consider yourself.
- 7:27We don't think our sin is categorically as bad
- 7:29as the next person sitting next to us. You see,
- 7:33church. Christianity stands or falls on the person
- 7:38and work of Jesus Christ, period. It succeeds
- 7:42or fails on whether or not Jesus actually says
- 7:45who he says he is in his word, or he's a liar.
- 7:50And if he is a liar, then we're doomed, right?
- 7:53C .S. Lewis says it this way in his book, Mere
- 7:54Christianity. A man who was merely a man and
- 7:58said the sorts of things Jesus said would not
- 8:00be a great moral teacher. He would either be
- 8:03a lunatic on a level with the man who says that
- 8:07he is a poached egg, or else he would be the
- 8:11devil of hell. You must make the choice. Either
- 8:16this man was and is the Son of God, or else a
- 8:19madman or something worse. You can't shut up
- 8:23for him as a fool, and you cannot spit at him
- 8:27and kill him as a demon. Or you can fall at his
- 8:31feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not
- 8:36come with any patronizing nonsense about him
- 8:40being a good teacher. He has not left himself
- 8:43open to any such thing or intends to do so. Friends,
- 8:50if Jesus is Lord, this changes everything. It
- 8:53changes everything. It changes everyone. And
- 8:55he makes people. He can make Henry a believer.
- 9:00He can convert Corey into a Jesus follower, and
- 9:03he can help us see the depths of our sinful,
- 9:05sinful, sinful hearts so that we would fall on
- 9:08our faces and praise God, singing amazing grace,
- 9:11how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like
- 9:13me. And I mean that. You could sing that with
- 9:17every fiber of your being. This is what I believe
- 9:22we have here in 1 John, right? the true Jesus
- 9:28of the Bible, as he says that he is, written
- 9:31by the beloved disciple. And so you might be
- 9:34asking, okay, if this is true, and Jesus is real,
- 9:38what does this look like? What does fellowship
- 9:42with God look like? Well, I'm glad you asked.
- 9:49The question is based in this section of verses
- 9:52in 1 John 1. Really in verses 3 to 4. And I believe
- 9:57John answers that question in all 10 verses.
- 10:00And it would be this. True Christians receive
- 10:04the light, proclaim the light, and walk in the
- 10:09light. True Christians receive the light, proclaim
- 10:13the light, and walk in the light. And he does
- 10:16this through three movements. So quickly, if
- 10:20I can get through these 10 verses. Verses 1 and
- 10:242. So what does fellowship with God look like?
- 10:29Well, true Christians receive the light. That's
- 10:31what it looks like. We receive it. This is one
- 10:34of the greatest openings in all of Scripture.
- 10:36That which was from the beginning, which we have
- 10:38heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which
- 10:40we have looked upon and touched with our hands
- 10:43concerning the word of life. The first thing
- 10:45to know about fellowship with God is that it
- 10:48starts... with the initiation of God, right?
- 10:51The first thing to know about this light is that
- 10:54he initiates it. This is what he means when he
- 10:58says they saw and heard and touched the word
- 11:01of life. It was the incarnate Jesus. Friends,
- 11:05Jesus is not merely the message of the gospel,
- 11:08but he is the object of the gospel. He is the
- 11:12gospel. That is where the power of salvation
- 11:14comes from, in Jesus' life, death, and resurrection.
- 11:18John echoes this in the beginning of his gospel
- 11:21in John chapter 1. In the beginning was the Word,
- 11:24and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,
- 11:27and He was in the beginning with God, and all
- 11:29things were made through Him, and without Him
- 11:31was not anything made that was made, and in Him
- 11:33was the life, and the life was what? The light
- 11:37of men. The light shines in the darkness and
- 11:41the darkness has not overcome it. And the word
- 11:43became flesh and dwelt among us and we have seen
- 11:45his glory. That is his light. Glory as the only
- 11:49son from the father full of grace and truth.
- 11:52Jesus. This is why I say true Christians receive
- 11:56the light. God the son. has come so that all
- 12:03who did receive him and believed in his name
- 12:07would become children of God, not born of blood,
- 12:09nor of the will of flesh, nor even the will of
- 12:12man, but of God. Church, this is the message
- 12:16for us, that Jesus is light. He's the incarnate
- 12:20word of God that saves. And John says that we
- 12:24have seen this God -man. We heard him. We touched
- 12:28him. He was real. He came to live the life we
- 12:31could not live, die the death we deserve, and
- 12:34raise again to give newness of life. And he continues
- 12:37in verse 2, the life that was made manifest,
- 12:39and we have seen it and testified to it, and
- 12:42proclaimed to you eternal life, which was with
- 12:46the Father and was made manifest to us. It's
- 12:48just like he's re -saying John chapter 1 from
- 12:51his gospel. That is invisible eternal life. became
- 12:57visible in the sun. And if Jesus is eternal life,
- 13:02as he says he is, like if he really is, he is
- 13:07your life today. Today, he sustains you today.
- 13:12All the things we just prayed about, he gives
- 13:15life to you today, right now. He is no ghost.
- 13:19He is no illusion. He was real. He is real. And
- 13:25that's what John is arguing against his opponents.
- 13:28That he's not just a nice teacher. That there
- 13:32is a resurrection. That God did take on flesh.
- 13:37And John says, Jesus is who he says he is. And
- 13:42he is foundational to your life. The doctrine
- 13:46of Christ's manifestation is of paramount importance
- 13:49to us because the message, That's where the power
- 13:53comes from. His life. The power of Christ. And
- 13:59now, you might be asking, why does that matter
- 14:03to me? Well, I'm glad you asked. This matters
- 14:09to us in two particular ways. One, without Jesus
- 14:12coming in the flesh and living and dying and
- 14:14raising again, we have no gospel. We have no
- 14:17hope. We have nothing. We have nothing to wake
- 14:20us up. We have nothing that motivates us, that
- 14:22gives us purpose. We have no salvation. But if
- 14:25he did do those things, we have everything. We
- 14:32have everything for life. We have joy in difficulty.
- 14:35We have hope in uncertainty. And we have power
- 14:37in our weakness. And two, I'll start off by saying,
- 14:44I don't think people... have difficulty squaring
- 14:49the idea that Jesus is both God and man. That's
- 14:53difficult, but I don't think at the end of the
- 14:55day people deny Jesus because He's fully God
- 15:01and man. I think it comes down to this. If Jesus
- 15:08is real, if He really came and did all the things
- 15:12that Scripture says that He did and that He claims
- 15:15to have done, then Jesus confronts our human
- 15:19desire to save ourselves. Meaning that if Jesus
- 15:25is Lord as he claims that he is, there is no
- 15:28other recourse than to submit everything to him.
- 15:35Submit your life, and I mean all of it. That
- 15:39means your house, your car, your health, your
- 15:41marriage, your children, your money, your job,
- 15:44every bit of it. your comfort. This is no small
- 15:49task, but it's the only thing we could do. And
- 15:53it's of the utmost importance for He is Lord.
- 15:56And you might say, Jared, that's a lot to ask
- 15:58for. What has He given me? We're saying it. What
- 16:03has He given you? What has He given you, me,
- 16:08everything? He gave His life. This is the gospel.
- 16:16That before Jesus, you were dead and you needed
- 16:19life and you were guilty and you needed forgiveness
- 16:21and he meets those two requirements with his
- 16:24life, death, and resurrection. Living the life
- 16:27perfectly that we could not live so that salvation
- 16:30would actually be attainable, that he would fulfill
- 16:32all the requirements of the law to give life.
- 16:38And then he would die the death that we deserve,
- 16:41fulfilling the satisfaction and punishment of
- 16:45God's wrath itself, and to raise again to give,
- 16:47not just fulfilling the law, but to give newness
- 16:50of life. That is the gospel. And if you trust
- 16:55it, your two problems are taken care of. And
- 16:59it changes everything. This truth is something
- 17:03that we receive, though. This truth is something
- 17:06that we receive before we work. You can only
- 17:10receive the gospel. You cannot work for it. It
- 17:12is freely given. True Christians receive the
- 17:16light. They receive it. They receive Jesus. And
- 17:22then secondly, true Christians proclaim the light.
- 17:26Right? When we come to faith and we receive the
- 17:30light of life, the light of men, we receive it
- 17:34to proclaim it. Look at verses 3 to 4 with me.
- 17:37That which we have seen we proclaim to you. Why?
- 17:41So that you may have fellowship with us and have
- 17:44fellowship with God and our joy may be complete.
- 17:48The impact of Jesus on his disciples cannot be
- 17:52put into adequate words. They were radically
- 17:56and undeniably changed forever. That is what
- 18:00John is getting at for us here. In verse 3, it
- 18:05begins with what we have seen and heard and has
- 18:09been that repeated phrase for the first three
- 18:11verses. But notice the main verb of the entire
- 18:14section so far is this, proclaim. For John, he
- 18:20could not remain silent in the face of his opponents.
- 18:24who were teaching falsehoods. He could not remain
- 18:26silent in the face of those who did not believe
- 18:29in Jesus, and he could not stay silent to his
- 18:32brothers and sisters who needed reminding of
- 18:34the gospel of God, the light of God, Jesus Christ.
- 18:38This light was the life of men, and the life
- 18:43was made manifest to him, and it compelled him
- 18:46to proclaim the light. There was no alternative.
- 18:52And he longed for everyone to experience the
- 18:55same fellowship and joy that he had. You know,
- 18:58John talks about this fellowship four times in
- 19:01the letter, and it encompasses the joy and communion
- 19:04of the followers of Jesus that have a common
- 19:07belief, they have common values, they have common
- 19:10goals. Meaning they love the same things, and
- 19:14they have the same purpose and a common agenda
- 19:16to make Christ known. And so John wants all to
- 19:24come to this believing community of faith in
- 19:27Jesus because he loves the church and he loves
- 19:29the lost. He wants to invite all people and no
- 19:35one is to be excluded from this invitation. No
- 19:39one who comes by the way of Jesus, the light,
- 19:43the word, the one who gives life will ever be
- 19:46denied entrance. Meaning if you have fellowship
- 19:49with God the Father and His Son, you have fellowship
- 19:52with one another. That is the unity that we have
- 19:58with one another. True unity built upon the person
- 20:03and work of Jesus Christ. And we often take this
- 20:07unity and fellowship for granted. Biblical unity
- 20:11is deeper than conformity. Our unity is not built
- 20:16on identical opinions, but on the blood of Jesus.
- 20:22Consider the gospel that binds each of you at
- 20:25this gathering, at your local gathering here.
- 20:28Consider your Lord who has tied you together
- 20:31so intimately that you can come together no matter
- 20:34what corner of the earth you may be on by one
- 20:38unifying element, the blood of Jesus. that the
- 20:44gospel here is clearly proclaimed among you,
- 20:49that your elders care for you, and you are of
- 20:53one accord together. Today, think about that.
- 20:59That is no small thing. That is much to praise
- 21:04God about. You see, biblical fellowship is more
- 21:07than just coffee after church or enjoying another's
- 21:10company, and it is never conformity to particulars
- 21:14that are up for debate. Fellowship is sharing
- 21:17a common life in Christ. Because we belong to
- 21:21the same Savior, we belong to one another. Then,
- 21:27when that is done, and that settles and you sit
- 21:32in that, That eternal life in Jesus that transformed
- 21:37you, let it flow from you to others that you
- 21:40would proclaim the light for all those who walk
- 21:44in deep darkness and make it your goal, Christian,
- 21:48to add more to your numbers. From your neighbors
- 21:53and your family and your friends and even your
- 21:56grocery store attendant, add more to this gathering.
- 22:01Add them to this family because they need Christ.
- 22:04And John continues, though, for us as another
- 22:07reason why he proclaims the light. In verse 4,
- 22:10to complete his joy. God is most glorified in
- 22:18us when we find our joy in him. That is a rewording
- 22:22of John Piper's banner -waving phrase. And I
- 22:24believe it's true. To find our joy in Christ
- 22:27means that we will not rest until the non -believing
- 22:30world comes to know the same joy that we love.
- 22:35Think of verse 4 as a motivation for John's proclaiming
- 22:39the light. And it should be ours as well. Joy
- 22:44in God. You see, John's joy was not complete
- 22:48until the world around him shared, the Christ
- 22:51that he loved. He needed those around him to
- 22:56know the joy giver. There was too much darkness.
- 23:01There was too much blind men. There were too
- 23:03many people stuck, and he had the cure, the light
- 23:08of life, Jesus. And this is not a partial joy.
- 23:13This is a complete joy, an all -encompassing
- 23:16joy, a full joy. All we could ever want or need
- 23:22is wrapped in the single life of Jesus Christ,
- 23:25and it is He who provides life and light to all
- 23:30peoples. We have fullness of joy in our shared
- 23:35life with Him, the Father and the Son. The fullness
- 23:43of our joy is ours through our friendship with
- 23:45one another, with God, with Jesus, the Father.
- 23:50And this is only possible through the gospel
- 23:52of Jesus Christ, the light of God, God's Son.
- 23:57So you may ask, okay, well, what's that about?
- 24:02How do I, what does that mean for me? I'm glad
- 24:05you asked. But I'm going to ask you a question,
- 24:08and you can think about it. Very basic application
- 24:14of question from those two verses. Is your joy
- 24:20not complete until the world around you knows
- 24:24the Jesus you love? Proclaim the light and watch
- 24:35Him do wonders. But that's not all. Verse 5,
- 24:4010. Walk in the light. True Christians receive
- 24:46the light. True Christians proclaim the light.
- 24:49True Christians walk in the light, right? John
- 24:54continues his argument, dialing in for us what
- 24:57the message is and what it does, that true Christians
- 25:00walk in the light. Verse 5 tells us in one succinct
- 25:04sentence what the message of this is at its core.
- 25:08God is a light, and in Him there is no darkness
- 25:11at all. This is a character description of God
- 25:15Himself. that John even proclaims that Jesus
- 25:19made himself. He says this in John 8 .12. If
- 25:23you're familiar with the Gospel of John, he says,
- 25:25I am the light of the world. Whoever follows
- 25:27me will not walk in darkness, but will have the
- 25:29light of life. The light we receive, the light
- 25:34that we proclaim, and now the light that we walk
- 25:36in is not simply a message. It is a person. It's
- 25:41Jesus. This is significant for John because light
- 25:45provides illumination in dark places and shows
- 25:47us where we need to go when it's hard to see.
- 25:53Jesus, who is light, provides us an example of
- 25:55how to live, on how to walk. Light is also a
- 26:00means of purification, and for Jesus, to be light
- 26:03means he's holy, he's glorious, he's a purifier.
- 26:11That this light of men shines so brightly, it
- 26:16means to purify every sin -stained fiber of our
- 26:20being so that we would be in perfect fellowship
- 26:24with God. Light here for John is not just a nice
- 26:29allegory, it's not just an illusion to think
- 26:32of our Savior, but to teach us what is truly
- 26:35ethical and moral in God's economy. Simply put,
- 26:41God is light, so walk in the light. This is clear
- 26:46in verse 6, which begins this kind of three -part
- 26:50correction of the false teachers and people who
- 26:52claimed weird things, right? John says, if we
- 26:56say we have fellowship with God, that is with
- 26:59Him, but walk in darkness, we're a liar. The
- 27:09claim that some were making, was that they had
- 27:11fellowship with God, like true relationship.
- 27:15This was their claim. They had true relationship
- 27:16with Him, and yet were walking in darkness, meaning
- 27:18they were living sinful lives continually. John's
- 27:25indictment does not mince words. Those who claim
- 27:29such things are liars, and they don't practice
- 27:32the truth. Right? You're like, well, how does
- 27:36that play out today? Just get your flavor of
- 27:39politician. All of them are Christians. Are they?
- 27:47It's crazy. Or just your favorite celebrity.
- 27:51Everyone uses Jesus as a bumper sticker, but
- 27:55it doesn't change them. Jesus changes people.
- 28:00So it's not compatible. You can't practice the
- 28:05truth when you lie about it. That is... They
- 28:09don't practice it. They don't do the truth. Such
- 28:13a person deceives themselves as they claim to
- 28:15have fellowship with God, but because of the
- 28:17incompatibility between the character of God
- 28:20as light and their own character as sinful men
- 28:23living in darkness, they are liars. And you see
- 28:27they were deceived in thinking that they could
- 28:29have fellowship with God and still make a practice
- 28:32of sin. Our sin is so egregious, it's so unholy,
- 28:36it's so filled with darkness, that it is in complete
- 28:40contrary nature to who even God is as light.
- 28:44Friends, if you want to know who God is, just
- 28:47look around. You don't have to look at a particular
- 28:50politician. Look at us, this room. It's amazing
- 28:54that God has kept the roof above our heads when
- 28:58he could have collapsed it upon us because of
- 29:00our sin. That's how bad sin really is. It's a
- 29:06cosmic rebellion against God. But we have this
- 29:10promise. God is light, and in Him there is no
- 29:14darkness. There is no fine print with God. Bring
- 29:20your nothing, and you receive everything. This
- 29:25is grace, and this is verse 7, the gospel for
- 29:28us this morning. But if we walk in the light
- 29:32as he is in the light, we have fellowship with
- 29:34God and with one another, and the blood of Jesus,
- 29:37his Son, cleanses us from all sin. John's logic.
- 29:41Follow me for a second. Follow me. God is light.
- 29:44That is the message that they proclaim and we
- 29:47proclaim. And if he is light, then if we are
- 29:51in him, we are in the light. This is the opposite
- 29:55of living in darkness. True Christians walk in
- 29:58the light. And when we walk in the light, there
- 30:00are particular benefits to walking in the light.
- 30:04Namely, we have fellowship with one another,
- 30:07right? The whole company of God's people. But
- 30:11how does this happen? By what power, by what
- 30:16power do we walk in the light? The blood of Christ.
- 30:26That is what I meant. when I say verse 7, is
- 30:29the gospel for us. When we are in the light,
- 30:32we are immediately aware of the stains on our
- 30:35clothes, and we can see the devastating effects
- 30:38of sin on our lives, and the light illuminates
- 30:41the darkness and begins to do something powerful.
- 30:44It cleanses. The sinful man comes, sin and all,
- 30:50into the light, and to his amazement, that Each
- 30:55dark blemish begins to disappear. The blood of
- 31:01Jesus, God's Son, cleanses from all sin. And
- 31:04John is speaking of the death of our Lord. This
- 31:08was always the pattern, even in the Old Testament.
- 31:11Someone would give a sacrifice for sin, blood
- 31:14would be shed, that sacrifice would cover them,
- 31:17and it would purify them, and their life was
- 31:20found in that sacrifice. The same... It's for
- 31:23us, friends. The same is for us. For our Lord
- 31:29does the same thing. Christ's death was to purify
- 31:33us from sin, to remove our sin, to forgive our
- 31:36sin and its defiling effects that we would no
- 31:38longer be condemned in the sight of God. That
- 31:42God's judgment would be removed from us and placed
- 31:47on another. Jesus. That he would be a satisfying
- 31:57sacrifice. That his life, death, and resurrection
- 32:01would be an aroma to God that was just not pleasing,
- 32:04but sufficient. That is the gospel. And although
- 32:12we fight sin daily, our victory is found in the
- 32:14power of Jesus, who has defeated both the penalty
- 32:17of sin and the power of sin for us. Praise God.
- 32:23So awaken from your sinful slumber. Walk in the
- 32:28light. John doesn't allow us to sit comfortably,
- 32:32though. He continues to call us to war with our
- 32:35sin as he continues by saying, if we say we have
- 32:39no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is
- 32:42not in us. He's reiterating his earlier point,
- 32:45except the lie gets deeper. There were those
- 32:49who not only said they had fellowship with God
- 32:51and lived like hell, but also there were those
- 32:54who said that they had no sin. That is, that
- 32:58they believed they had transcended sin, that
- 33:00they were not actively sinning when they actually
- 33:02were. Right? They didn't need to be cleansed
- 33:06from sin because they had none. This is blasphemy.
- 33:13For if you remove sin, you remove the necessity
- 33:15of the Savior. So to say that you have sin or
- 33:20to say that you have no sin means that you are
- 33:23a liar. But the converse is that if we say that
- 33:28we are sinners, the truth is in us. The takeaway?
- 33:33Admit your sin, church. Admit your need. Admit
- 33:38your helplessness. Is your walk in the light
- 33:42characterized by confession and repentance and
- 33:47perseverance? John seems to think so because
- 33:51he says in the next verse, if we confess our
- 33:54sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our
- 33:56sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 33:59If we confess, God is faithful. I need you to
- 34:03catch this with me. Our cleansing is not conditional
- 34:08on our confession. Right? Not in and of itself.
- 34:13But by trusting in the faithfulness of Christ,
- 34:16that's where our cleansing comes from. It is
- 34:19not the confession itself that cleanses, but
- 34:22God's faithfulness through the blood of His Son,
- 34:24Jesus, that cleanses us. To confess our sins
- 34:29is not merely to admit that we are sinners, but
- 34:31to lay it before God and to seek His forgiveness.
- 34:34And if we do so, we can be sure of this thing,
- 34:37that He will forgive you, that He will purify
- 34:41you. Based on what grounds? I'm glad you asked.
- 34:46His own character. not the strength of your confession.
- 34:52He is faithful, and not just faithful, but just
- 34:56to forgive sin that is confessed. The faithfulness
- 35:04lies in God's adherence to His promise that He
- 35:08will save His people. Is that not the same of
- 35:14the writer of Hebrews when... The writer says
- 35:16in chapter 9, Therefore, brothers, since we have
- 35:18a confidence to enter the holy places by the
- 35:21blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that
- 35:23he opened for us through the curtain that is
- 35:25his flesh, and since we have a great high priest
- 35:27over the house of God, let us draw near, near
- 35:30with a true heart of full assurance of faith,
- 35:33with our hearts sprinkled clean from every evil
- 35:36conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
- 35:41It is John that reminds us of this point in verse
- 35:447. But God, being rich in mercy, has removed
- 35:47the guilt and power of sin in the human heart
- 35:50to walk in the light. For darkness has no power
- 35:56over you. And yet again, the detractors, if you
- 36:00see the last verse for us, if we say we have
- 36:04not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is
- 36:06not in us. It is one thing to deny. Present sinfulness.
- 36:11It is another to deny past acts of sin, and that's
- 36:15what the claim is here. This truly is the final
- 36:19nail in the coffin for them, and John's indictment
- 36:21is a heavy one. Their claim is that they had
- 36:29no sin even in the past. And John says, it's
- 36:35not that you're just a liar. You make God a liar.
- 36:41And his word is not in you. Yes, that word, the
- 36:47living word, Jesus. Jesus has not made his home
- 36:51in you if you say such things. The claim that
- 36:54one has never sinned once again claims man as
- 36:57his own savior, disregarding his need for Christ
- 37:01and the Lord of all. who is the only way to the
- 37:04Father and the only way to life, who is the light
- 37:07of life, the only one who purifies from all sin
- 37:10by his life, death, and resurrection. To claim
- 37:13this would be a rejection of the entirety of
- 37:15the scriptures, and the narrative is one of universal
- 37:20sin and man's natural bent to be enemies of God.
- 37:24But God sends his Son to save sinful man because
- 37:30men could not save themselves. So that all who
- 37:33would come to be justified by faith in Christ
- 37:35alone, by grace alone, would receive the light,
- 37:39becoming children of God, proclaiming the light
- 37:42to make others children of God and to walk in
- 37:45the light as children of God. So church, this
- 37:51morning, I asked one central question. What does
- 37:56fellowship with God look like? John's answer
- 37:59is not secret knowledge. It's not performance.
- 38:03It's not pretending to have no sin. It's not
- 38:07merely claiming to know God and living like a
- 38:09person who does not. The answer here is true
- 38:12Christians receive the light, proclaim the light,
- 38:15and walk in the light. So some of you here, you've
- 38:21heard and you've never received the light. You've
- 38:26admired Jesus as a good teacher, but never Lord.
- 38:30You never submitted to who he actually is. I
- 38:33invite you, as John does, to submit to the real
- 38:37Jesus, to come to the light, receive Christ as
- 38:41he receives sinners, and his blood cleanses from
- 38:44all sin. Some of you here, you've received the
- 38:48light, but never proclaimed the light. You've
- 38:50hidden it under a bushel. John reminds us that
- 38:54Christ is the one we receive. He is the light.
- 38:59And this Christ is the one we proclaim to the
- 39:02dark world who will illuminate the dark. So even
- 39:06if they stone you like they did Stephen, well
- 39:12done. God wins. So do you. You get Jesus. They
- 39:20spit at you. They get angry at you. Go unafraid
- 39:24to share the light of the world. Christ and Him
- 39:27crucified. And some of you here, you're just
- 39:29tired. You're tired because you're sin. And you're
- 39:33tired because of the effects of sin. They seem
- 39:36unbearable. They seem insurmountable. Friends,
- 39:40confess your sins because He is faithful and
- 39:43just to forgive sins and cleanse from all unrighteousness.
- 39:47Never run from the light because of your sin.
- 39:52Instead, run into the light because that is where
- 39:55cleansing and rest is found. The light Jesus
- 39:59Christ has come into the world. And I urge all
- 40:02of us, especially myself, receive Him, proclaim
- 40:06Him, and walk in Him. Let's pray. Father, we
- 40:12come before You and we thank You for Your Word.
- 40:16We pray that You would apply it to us. that you
- 40:21would help us see you, see our true Savior, and
- 40:27see ourselves. Make this book live to us. Amen.
