Transcript
- 0:00All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon back
- 0:02with you on a Tuesday. Glad you're with us as we start
- 0:05off a six hour block of Iowa based programming.
- 0:08Wherever you're listening on the Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:11anywhere on the iheart app or right here on Des Moines Sports
- 0:14Station One O 6.3 KX snow, we're grateful that you're starting
- 0:17your afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:21program here this morning. I forgot to look at the guest
- 0:24list. Trent Condon, Elliot Clough will
- 0:26join us. That's good one.
- 0:27He will be. He's in Iowa City, of course,
- 0:30listening to Hawkeye players and in advance of Kirk Ference
- 0:33meeting the media at 1:45, we'll get Elliot the latest.
- 0:37Obviously. Do you know who the players have
- 0:40that have met the media so far? And I guess one in particular
- 0:43was Gronowski part of it. He was not, in fact, none of
- 0:46the. Quarterbacks were a part of it.
- 0:48Interesting. So we will find out more maybe
- 0:51at 1:40. Five.
- 0:52What do you read into it? I read that he certainly
- 0:55day-to-day and that they do not know at this point.
- 0:58Because Gronowski is usually part of the oh, absolutely of
- 1:02these interviews with the media before fair.
- 1:05And so that's that's not a good sign, I don't think.
- 1:07Or maybe they're just. Getting courtship right?
- 1:10Absolutely. Or or they just frankly don't
- 1:12know at this point. I mean there's still 5 days till
- 1:14we get to game day. Is there that long?
- 1:16Yeah, I. Mean we gotta wait till Saturday
- 1:17before this is gonna happen so that very well could be a part
- 1:20of it too just see how he's gonna we found out today John
- 1:23material now no chance of playing against Texas right so
- 1:26explain and now he's gonna maybe give it a go but again it's
- 1:29Tuesday there's still plenty of time and see.
- 1:31Plant that side of the plant that seed rather in the Sark and
- 1:34company's head. We will see.
- 1:37So we'll talk to Elliot Clough and then we will talk to Matt
- 1:39Snyder's. We get back to baseball and I
- 1:41couldn't be any more excited for that.
- 1:42I love that segment. Little MLB conversation.
- 1:45Three teams in an O2 hole one series which will start the
- 1:49coverage today. Seattle and Detroit, they are
- 1:52one apiece. That's a three O 8 I believe.
- 1:54First pitch here this afternoon and then the only other game
- 1:57today, Yanks and the Blue Jays as the Yanks are down O2 Bieber
- 2:02against Rodon in that one. So we'll talk some baseball with
- 2:05Matt Snyder and then Matt Poston's will join us.
- 2:08We'll get a recap the Big 12 where they are at this far into
- 2:11the college football season. Maybe do some basketball as well
- 2:14as Poston's. He's really good on on on men's
- 2:17hoops in the Big 12. So we'll cover a lot of ground
- 2:20with him. Trent's plays of the day coming
- 2:22up here at 150 Mr. Monday night. Had a nice win last night.
- 2:25The Jags in the what are they calling it?
- 2:27The stumble Ruski? That's a pretty good name.
- 2:31Pretty good name. Trevor Lawrence gets stepped on
- 2:34by his right guard, falls down, kind of falls down again in his
- 2:38haste to get back up and then makes a play.
- 2:42Chris Jones just stood there. Yeah, he did.
- 2:44That's not a good look. This is the lead.
- 2:46You see a guy fall over though he'd been on the field at tie.
- 2:50His sixteens running around is your team mates.
- 2:51You're. But is he running?
- 2:52You see him on the ground too. Yeah, but his team mates are.
- 2:55His team mates are running. But Chris Jones didn't think,
- 2:57you know what I'm not. They can do without me on this
- 2:59one. So what cut him?
- 3:01No, I don't think you cut him and I don't think we'll ever no
- 3:04more. I hope the media gets involved.
- 3:06I hope the media. To the media's credit, they
- 3:08asked Mauser about Bramer yesterday or Saturday rather
- 3:11what happened at the end? And Mauser said he'd lost track
- 3:13of time. OK, lost track of time.
- 3:18Yeah, But the answer the somebody discredited in in Ames,
- 3:21and I don't know who it was, but that question was asked because
- 3:24that that wasn't a good look yesterday or or Saturday rather.
- 3:26Anyways, the Monday night game last night, what did what did
- 3:29you learn, if anything? Are the Jags legitimate?
- 3:32No, I'm not saying they're a threat to win the Super Bowl to
- 3:34represent the AFC, but where are they?
- 3:36They're. They can win that division,
- 3:38maybe. I still think the Colts are
- 3:40better. I do too.
- 3:42I think they might be significantly better.
- 3:43But do you see that team, even a four and one?
- 3:46Are they better than a 10 and seven type of team?
- 3:49Well, here's what I'll say, and here's what dawned on me last
- 3:52night watching the game. I can't remember the last Jags
- 3:55game I watched. Seriously, when does when do you
- 3:58go out of your way to watch Jacksonville if your team is not
- 4:00playing them? I told you yesterday, it was
- 4:02when they played the Titans in those Nurse Tonight games.
- 4:04That's the only time the. Only time if they're a
- 4:06standalone and there's nothing else on, you're going to what
- 4:08what you. Of course, if it's standalone,
- 4:10you're going to watch the NFL. But you know what my take away?
- 4:13They got some talent. Well, they got talented dudes.
- 4:15They do. They're also so it out game.
- 4:17They gave up almost 500 yards of offense to the Chiefs.
- 4:20Yeah, Patrick most got a little too cute on that interception.
- 4:23See that was a no look pass that had that 99 yard pick 6 to
- 4:26Lloyd. That was a no looker.
- 4:28You don't see those backfire old 15 too often.
- 4:31I was apoplectic when they were into the officials to have them.
- 4:35Do you remember the first play of the game when they were the
- 4:37first touchdown and the flag came out offensive passer and
- 4:41fears they're going to call a pick.
- 4:42No, we get a yard. No, we get a yard and I'm
- 4:44thinking USO BS you're going to but you know what it was right.
- 4:48It was it was a perfectly legal block and I'm texting like crazy
- 4:53with my non chiefs fans out there.
- 4:54See they did it again and I saw the replay.
- 4:56Whoops. They had you got the chiefs.
- 4:59The players had it right and because they knew they lined up
- 5:02on the 2 yard line. The block in question happened
- 5:05at the 1 you get 1 yard. That was not a a an official's
- 5:10gathering. We got to make this right for
- 5:12Patrick, but nonetheless, the Chiefs fall and look, they're
- 5:16two and three, which I don't think anybody thought they'd be
- 5:19after 5 weeks. I brought up a guy yesterday
- 5:22when we were talking with Nick Athan.
- 5:25And you? Know the young running back
- 5:26Brashard Smith yeah he needs to be a bigger SMU, right he needs
- 5:29to be a bigger piece now they used him out of back he.
- 5:32Was good yesterday he had his best game.
- 5:34Yes, I still wonder what's left in the tank with him.
- 5:37He hasn't had the same burst after the broken leg that we
- 5:40saw, and he's going to get you harder in our yards.
- 5:43But this Smith kid, There's some wiggle.
- 5:45To him, yeah, I think you're right.
- 5:46And there's something that now remember, as I mentioned
- 5:49yesterday, he was a wide receiver until his last year at
- 5:52SMU. And you can see why they're
- 5:54using my backfield because he can catch a well, because that's
- 5:56what he was, a wider. I mean, I'm guessing you have no
- 5:59idea. Did you ever play running back
- 6:00in high school or anything like that?
- 6:01Yeah, yeah. Just knew that he moved there.
- 6:04SMU moved him there last year and they were playoff team and
- 6:06now you're seeing this. But I really like what you saw
- 6:08to him. I don't, I don't take this as a
- 6:11big demand. It was a weird game, you know,
- 6:13just an odd game. The Chiefs outplayed him for
- 6:15long, long stretches there. And Trevor Lawrence, people will
- 6:18remember that final play because it's so acid.
- 6:19I right, it's so dumb. I was just, I, I was giggling.
- 6:22I couldn't stop laughing. I saw your text rather.
- 6:25Trevor Lawrence, He's just not. Very good he's not.
- 6:28He's not. He's throwing.
- 6:29The ball, he's across the line of scrimmage and he's throwing
- 6:32the ball. Early in the game, yes.
- 6:33Early in the game, how many times did the clock run out on
- 6:36him? Where is your home?
- 6:37Stadium. Brian Thomas.
- 6:39Now that throw. That was unbelievable.
- 6:42I mean, good God, that's dropping the button completed to
- 6:44begin with. But over the course of 60
- 6:46minutes, and to your point, yeah, I don't watch the Jaguars
- 6:48for 60 consecutive minutes, but during that watching that, he
- 6:52just isn't good enough. I don't know.
- 6:55He was getting Mr. I know he did.
- 6:56I thought he was an absolute can't miss.
- 6:58He is fine. He can take this team, yeah, 10
- 7:02and seven, be a playoff team, but they're just the consistency
- 7:06isn't there when you watch him over the course.
- 7:08Of the game I don't. Think so.
- 7:10I mean at this point, I mean the Josh Allen thing is, is one of
- 7:13one. We have never seen a guy
- 7:15struggle as mightily as he did early in his career with
- 7:18completion percentage, the simple throws and do it for
- 7:21basically two years. Like he was 115.
- 7:23He was but. That's also lined up under the
- 7:26right guard. That's a different era too.
- 7:28In today's era, where completion percentage, you need to be
- 7:30complete. We've never seen anything like
- 7:32Josh Allen struggling to complete 53% of his passes and
- 7:35then turn into the guy that he has.
- 7:37That is a huge rarity in today's game, and Trevor Lawrence is
- 7:41now. Five years 5.
- 7:43Years in and suddenly that consistency is going to start.
- 7:45I don't see it. He is what he is.
- 7:47There's talent. It's not that he's not talented,
- 7:50just not consistent enough to be.
- 7:51Washington's emerging. Maybe.
- 7:53Maybe it's a product of his, of his receivers.
- 7:57I don't know. I like that right guard or right
- 8:00tackle, rather. 77, can't think of as Harrison.
- 8:02Harrison, I think you got hurt. So they're building a nice
- 8:05offensive line there. Obviously, Etienne can run the
- 8:07football a little bit, but I think the Colts are the team in
- 8:09that division. It's like it's a division that
- 8:12of the eight, would that be the one we ignore the most?
- 8:14Maybe. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I think so
- 8:16too, even though the Colts are part of it.
- 8:18But we're a long way removed from Peyton Manning being Colt.
- 8:21And Dallas Clark and Pat Sanders and having the local connection
- 8:24that goes along with it. And not just any local
- 8:26connection, I mean two beloved players.
- 8:28Yeah. That were, I think, a big part.
- 8:30There are plenty of people that jumped on the Colts bandwagon.
- 8:32Terry, because of that, yeah, I'm sure.
- 8:34And I'm sure there's probably some people in their 20s and 30s
- 8:37now that became Colts fans because of Peyton or maybe the
- 8:40local connection. But yeah, of the four divisions,
- 8:43because even at anger, you were out there for a couple of years,
- 8:46Hell yeah. You know, the NFC West kind of
- 8:48forgotten, but the NFC West still has 49ers.
- 8:51I mean. By era, a lot of 49er fans.
- 8:54Then he got the the Brock pretty connection.
- 8:56George Kittle, that's definitely helped out.
- 8:58Definitely the AFC South and Jaguars are they're fine.
- 9:03They stole one. I think they stole one last.
- 9:05Night. Yeah, yeah, you can look at it
- 9:07that way. I don't disagree with.
- 9:08What I mean, when you get out game by almost 200 yards in an
- 9:11NFL game, that's pretty significant.
- 9:12Yep, it is. It is Hollywood.
- 9:15Brown was good. You you're just looking to find
- 9:17a way to pour dirt on the Chiefs.
- 9:18I I know you over there. I've actually I spent a lot of
- 9:20my own money, not our fake media call money.
- 9:22I spent a lot of my own money on the Chiefs this last week.
- 9:24I didn't want to be left behind. Should have waited till this
- 9:27week. Yeah, we've got a better.
- 9:28Price right. It's always the way there was a
- 9:31game that I don't think got the eyeballs that it deserved and I
- 9:36understand why in that in that late window or that three O 5
- 9:39window on on Sunday and I'm really just a start yesterday
- 9:44just realized what I missed and Seattle and Tampa Bay must have
- 9:48been a hell of a football game yes, I mean both of the
- 9:51quarterbacks in that game and what they were doing as far as
- 9:54the numbers the percentages that they put up in that football
- 9:57game Trent. It's unbelievable.
- 9:59I mean that the head to head the darn old box score versus the
- 10:03Baker Mayfield. Baker was 29 out of 33379 yards,
- 10:082 touchdown, 29 out of 3328 out of 34 for Donald, 4 touchdowns,
- 10:141 interception. That's good quarterback play.
- 10:18That is 2 good quarterbacks in the same draft, right?
- 10:21Baker was 1, Darnold was 3 only. You're better at that stuff than
- 10:27I. Am I think that's Barclays
- 10:29draft? Oh really?
- 10:30I think it was Mayfield, Barkley, Darnold.
- 10:35Is that right? Or was that Zach Wilson's draft?
- 10:40I don't remember. But two really good quarterback.
- 10:42So what about either of those teams Tampa Bay and Seattle more
- 10:46likely to represent in the NFC in a Super Bowl is.
- 10:50Oh, I think it's Tampa. It's not even close.
- 10:52Do you? Oh yeah.
- 10:54I mean, a, they went into Seattle and they won that.
- 10:56Win I agree with. You this team is incredibly
- 10:58banked up. They Mike Evans will come back
- 11:00after his yearly hamstring injury and he'll be Mike Evans
- 11:03and he'll have 1000 yards and probably end with a ton
- 11:04touchdowns because that's what he does.
- 11:06They have the MVP in the league right now and Baker Mayfield.
- 11:10You heard that right. The MVP of the NFL is Baker
- 11:13Mayfield, right? What?
- 11:15What is odds? 12:50 That's pretty good.
- 11:17That's pretty good. 8 to one, eight to one DraftKings.
- 11:19As I look at it right now, the third betting choice could have
- 11:21got him a week ago at 16 to 1. Really.
- 11:23Did you? No Wish I would have put that
- 11:26one in my back pocket. Baker Mayfield's the MVP with an
- 11:30offensive line is depleted for a good team that we can remember
- 11:34and they're getting healthier and a wide receiver group that
- 11:36loses it's veteran and minimal. Played without Godwin for what,
- 11:41the first three weeks of the season and got him back.
- 11:43Baker is the MVP in Tampa, Seattle.
- 11:46Playing with the Offensive Rookie of the Year.
- 11:48Yeah. Oh, absolutely, he's -110 -, 110
- 11:52Ibuka is -110 Do you know what I got him at at Circa?
- 11:55I do because he's you've. 50 to 1:50 to 1:50 to 1:00.
- 12:00Good one to have in the back pocket.
- 12:01Oh my God, Seattle's. I don't know.
- 12:05We'll, we'll see. Where's Seattle to win the West?
- 12:09Seattle to win the West, all right, wins.
- 12:12It can't. Be the third choice.
- 12:14The person was clearly 4th. All right, scrolling through,
- 12:17let's get to the NFC West. Here we go.
- 12:20You're betting favorite team at the top 49ers -125.
- 12:24I think it's a fake. I think it's a fake 4:00 and
- 12:251:00. Can I interest you in a Rams a
- 12:27little better than two to 1 + 2 O 5 on LA?
- 12:31No. What's Seattle?
- 12:335:00 to 1:00. Are they really?
- 12:35And there's the Cardinals, 35 to one that team.
- 12:39So Seattle has done this. Lost at home to the 49ers.
- 12:46Beat the Steelers and Caleb Johnson's bonehead to play.
- 12:49Oh, yeah. Right, right, right, right.
- 12:51That was in Pittsburgh. Blew off the Saints, nearly blew
- 12:55a big lead against the Cardinals and then lost at home again.
- 12:59To the Buccaneers. That's the team, he thinks,
- 13:01going to the Super Bowl, No. No, not when he put it like
- 13:04that. On the other side, this is what
- 13:07Tampa's done. Went in to their division rival
- 13:10and beat him a week. One out in Atlanta?
- 13:12Yep. Held on on the road against the
- 13:14Texans, beat The Jets, lost to the Eagles in a game that they
- 13:20woulda shoulda coulda and then came back and went on the road.
- 13:24All the way across the country to the West Coast to play
- 13:26Seattle in the home of the 12th man.
- 13:28Very tough. Place to play?
- 13:30They get the Niners at home this week.
- 13:32They hanged up Niners team. They go to Detroit after that,
- 13:36at the Saints before their bye week, Patriots at Bills, at
- 13:39Ramzu. That's a tough stretch.
- 13:40Yeah, it is. Cardinals at home after that and
- 13:43the closing stretch. How's this for their final five
- 13:46games of the year? Did they get a breather?
- 13:48Oh yeah. In fact, let's go right after
- 13:51Thanksgiving home for the Cardinals.
- 13:53OK. Home for the Saints, home for
- 13:56Atlanta. Got to go on the road to
- 13:59Carolina, to Miami, who might not have a coach at that point,
- 14:04and they wrap up at home again against Carolina, that closing
- 14:086. Now let's take this a step
- 14:11further as we're talking about some odds and some numbers.
- 14:15Tampa Bay to have the number one seed in the NFC.
- 14:17Oh, that's juicy, because it's Eagles.
- 14:19Lions. I don't.
- 14:21I've said this before, I don't think the Packers are the best
- 14:24team in the NFC. Name the finalists.
- 14:27Exact result. Championship, special winning
- 14:29conference playoffs. Number one seed.
- 14:32Here we go. Lions are plus 330, Niners 4 to
- 14:381. No thanks.
- 14:39Eagles plus 475, Packers 5 to 1. And there's the Bucks at six to
- 14:45one that closing stretch. Keep your head above water.
- 14:48We'll get it now or no, you know, maybe you should wait
- 14:51because it gets a little tougher before that 5 pack at the end.
- 14:54We'll see. All right, let's talk some
- 14:55baseball. Three teams down O2 in their
- 14:58respective series. The Yankees are up against it,
- 15:01the Cubs are up against it, and the Phillies are up against it.
- 15:06Of the three more likely to get to their leagues, Championship
- 15:11series or none of the above. Well, yeah, I mean, I think
- 15:15that's the right answer. I don't have belief in any of
- 15:17those three teams to do it. But if I had to do it, it'd be
- 15:21the Yankees. How come?
- 15:23Firepower, offensive lineup, getting a slow pitch softball.
- 15:26Game They're getting outscored by Toronto.
- 15:28Yeah, they are. In a big way.
- 15:29Win a couple of 10-7 games and they can hold on for dear life.
- 15:33On top of it, they go to Yankee Stadium.
- 15:37The Cubs are cooked of the three, Totally.
- 15:39They're third on that list. I think the gap between 2:00 and
- 15:423:00 is significant. And the Cubs are definitely 3rd
- 15:45and the Phillies have to go to LA.
- 15:46Yeah. And that and that's the
- 15:47difference between the other two, those other two teams you
- 15:50see. The play that Freeman made a
- 15:51first base for the final out of the game, the the scoop, the
- 15:53scoop, I mean, Tommy Edmond, what was that throw mentioned
- 15:57second baseman look like Chuck Knobloch over there, Steve.
- 16:01Sachs. I mean, he, he was obviously
- 16:03nerves, right? He panicked.
- 16:05He did. He panicked.
- 16:06What a play. Just chucked it and at first I
- 16:09didn't think Friedman had his foot on I.
- 16:11Didn't think so. We.
- 16:12They were the same way. Yes, yeah, thought it was off
- 16:13the bag. Thought he had pulled it.
- 16:15What a great night that was. Last night it was phenomenal.
- 16:17He flipped over. I flipped over right in time to
- 16:19see say I hit the three run Homer, here we go.
- 16:21Well, not me. Because I stayed with the end of
- 16:23the game and they and TBS because you must have flipped to
- 16:27TNT when they put it early. TBS showed him crossing home
- 16:30plate. What did I just miss?
- 16:34No. No, man.
- 16:35And then so I watched the baseball on my iPad and and and
- 16:39the football on the on the TV. But yeah, it was a fun night.
- 16:42Fun, fun, fun night. We get a double, a double header
- 16:45next week in football Monday night.
- 16:47We're supposed to have four games tomorrow.
- 16:49I don't think we will. You don't.
- 16:51I don't think we will. Is that fan Ken talking?
- 16:58It's Bieber versus Rodon. Bieber has been not.
- 17:04Good less of late Trent. He was better when he first came
- 17:06back. He was outstanding.
- 17:08He was better when he first came back.
- 17:10He's his last couple of starts have not been the shiniest.
- 17:13Looking through 5 innings, five hits, couple earned runs, six
- 17:17and a third, two earned runs, four hits in that one strikeout.
- 17:20Numbers have not been there like they were right when he came
- 17:23off, though, and maybe that's where the concern is.
- 17:25Rodan on the other side, good against the Red Sox in the
- 17:29playoffs, got to face the White Sox, the Orioles.
- 17:33The Twins has three starts previous to that so maybe don't
- 17:36have they set. Times yet Or are they waiting
- 17:38for the it's? TBD tomorrow for everything.
- 17:41Well, so right now it's listed 2:00 tomorrow for Tigers,
- 17:46Mariners, 4:00 for the Cubs, 8:00 for Dodgers, Phillies with
- 17:50Yankees, Blue Jays. TBD.
- 17:51I don't know if we do get because where would they put
- 17:556:00? I guess they put that right in
- 17:56the middle. I think they put that as 6:00
- 17:58there. So it'd be kind of a 2 hour gap
- 18:00between them all so nobody else would shift even if the Blue
- 18:04Jays eliminate. Yeah, I mean, sadly for the
- 18:06Tigers, the Mariners, it was like the Tigers and, and, and
- 18:09the Guardians, they're they're going to start the day.
- 18:11They're kind of like the Houston Texans back in the day.
- 18:13They're going to play Saturday at noon in the playoffs.
- 18:16That's just the way it is. Fascinating time.
- 18:20I love this time of year. We have some potential breaking
- 18:22news in the NFL with a trade the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 18:26Did they pick up a quarterback? They did.
- 18:30Did they pick up a good quarterback?
- 18:31They didn't if he was good. He probably wouldn't be on the.
- 18:35He wouldn't be traded or, yeah, be a free agent.
- 18:38They're going after a division mate, Joe Flacco.
- 18:40No. So Gabriel's the guy.
- 18:44And they're going with. Gabriel, what did you think of
- 18:46him Sunday morning? Better than I thought.
- 18:48I'm with you 100%. Better than I thought I saw his
- 18:51like yardage passing yardage total like in the prop market
- 18:53was like 170. I'm like, oh, that's a gift.
- 18:55Yeah, what did he throw for? I think maybe just shy of 200,
- 18:59something like that. I thought he was OK.
- 19:01I was surprised. Stronger armed than I
- 19:03anticipated with you. Yeah, there was.
- 19:06Is he a long term answered? I don't think so.
- 19:08So what does this do to Sanders? Does elevate him to two.
- 19:12Well, don't they still have like a bunch of guys on that roster?
- 19:14I thought they got rid of them. I don't even know what their
- 19:17roster construction looks. Like I'm going to look right
- 19:19now, now that you, now you got me wondering.
- 19:21Because yeah, that would make the most sense, right?
- 19:24The official 53 being roster. Let's go by position.
- 19:27Chart is Gabriel Flacco, he's out.
- 19:31Sanders was 3. Deshaun Watson is out, so it
- 19:34would be Gabriel Sanders. Shadour is one hit away from
- 19:39throwing his first pass in the NFL.
- 19:41Never thought it would happen. So Flacco is headed out the
- 19:44door. That's not where I would have
- 19:45went. I mean, what they, what they
- 19:46give up for him? A7 didn't even have anything
- 19:49like that in there. Can we go back?
- 19:52Got a couple minutes before we're going to get Elliot down
- 19:53here. Talk some Hawkeyes to the Cubs
- 19:56line up yesterday. Justin Turner at the top.
- 20:00Well, I think it was because they wanted Ashby, who's a
- 20:04left-hander. They don't want Michael Bush,
- 20:06for whatever reason, to face left handers.
- 20:09That's that was the I guess the reasoning behind it.
- 20:13Like it or not. Now I hated it too, but Bush did
- 20:16get a single. I mean, Bush Turner did single
- 20:19early in the 2nd and bad. I think it was.
- 20:21Yeah, second and bad. That's the guy leading off a
- 20:24game with an on base percentage of this year of 291, not not
- 20:28batting average on base percentage under 300 this year.
- 20:31Yes, it worked. But let's not play revisionist
- 20:33just because it worked. Come on, Justin Turner in that
- 20:37spot. It just it's unthinkable.
- 20:39Why don't they let Michael Bush hit lefties?
- 20:42I know he's not good at it. But he's it's not like he's
- 20:44never got a hit off. Yeah.
- 20:46He's not batting zero. I mean, what's more?
- 20:48Likely Bush is going to get a hit or Justin Turner's going to
- 20:50do something. Over the course of a season, it
- 20:53is Michael Bush at this point in his career.
- 20:55You know, here's the problem. Ian Haps batting a Buck 5.
- 20:59Dansby Swanson's batting $1.76. Their prize?
- 21:02Offseason acquisition Kyle Tucker batting $1.76 in the
- 21:06playoffs. That's not good enough.
- 21:08That is not good enough. And they're they're, they're
- 21:11striking out. What did you say the strikeout
- 21:13numbers were? I believe I saw the five playoff
- 21:15games, five playoff games. Now, to this point, they've
- 21:17struck out 54 times as a lineup. That's that.
- 21:20That works out. An average man.
- 21:21They got 11 of them yesterday, struck at 11 times yesterday
- 21:24against the Brewers. Now Mesirowski was good.
- 21:26Yes, he was. Hitting a buck for on the gun.
- 21:29And Speaking of that, you know, we people expertly right away, I
- 21:33mean, killing the decision to go with Ashby.
- 21:37However, it worked out pretty well with Miss Roski.
- 21:40It did. And we don't know how it would
- 21:42have went if he would have had it.
- 21:43If he had the same first inning that actually Ashby had, who
- 21:47knows what he would have looked like.
- 21:48It's that again, talking about baseball, the second guessing
- 21:52that is involved there and that was Murphy pushing the right
- 21:55part. It was.
- 21:56He's a great manager, Trent. He really is Craig.
- 21:58Counsel. Overrated.
- 22:01I think so. Overrated.
- 22:02When Vaughn hit the home run to tie it at 3:00, you could almost
- 22:06see the air going out of the dugout.
- 22:08And with at the Chicago dugout, they just looked like, Oh my
- 22:11God. It the non competitive outs were
- 22:13driving me now. I mean, it was the 6th inning,
- 22:156th inning PCA swinging at a pitch above his letters just.
- 22:20Did you see PCA? Try and climb for.
- 22:22Wall. Oh my God.
- 22:23What are you doing? Remember earlier in the year he
- 22:25dove and he was like 20 feet away from the ball.
- 22:28I love the guy. I.
- 22:31Just some of the. Some of the some of the stuff I
- 22:34mean, come on. He drives me crazy.
- 22:35Yeah, I get why. I get why.
- 22:37We'll take a time out. We'll come back and talk to
- 22:40Elliot Clough. Get the latest on the press
- 22:42conference. The players some of the Hawkeye
- 22:45players met earlier will pick Elliot's brain on what he thinks
- 22:48he's going to hear when the head man takes the podium at 1:45.
- 22:52But before we go to break, we ask you to go to kxno.com.

- 23:09Miller and Condon underway. Matt Snyder on more baseball
- 23:11conversation to kick off our number 2.
- 23:14Matt Poston's on the Big 12 Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 23:17Sports Radio Network. Hi, welcome back Miller and
- 23:20Condon. Is this Jim Crochet?
- 23:21It is. I just passed 12:30 on Des
- 23:24Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O and the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:29Network. We take you until 2 kicking off
- 23:32hour 2. Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com On
- 23:35MLB and Matt Poston's, he writes about the Big 12 football and
- 23:39basketball for Heartland College Sports.
- 23:42Here's Elliot Clef, hawkeyeinsider.com, part of 24/7
- 23:46sports. He sequestered in Iowa City
- 23:49listening to some of the players they've that they've met the
- 23:51media, waiting on Kirk Ference, who will do so in about an hour
- 23:55and 10 minutes. Elliot Trenton, Ken, thanks for
- 23:57coming on. How are things in Iowa City?
- 24:01Very good, Ken. Yeah, no quarterbacks today get
- 24:05a whole lot from from the players.
- 24:08But yeah, we're rolling well, assuming we'll we'll get more of
- 24:11a verdict on on quarterbacks from from Kirk Ference and like
- 24:15you said, about an hour and 10 minutes, but we'll see.
- 24:17I, I would not be surprised if it's, well, we'll play it by ear
- 24:21and day-to-day and, and we don't get a whole lot of anything, but
- 24:25we'll, we'll see how it goes. Yeah.
- 24:27It's kind of how Trent, now we're talking about it earlier
- 24:29because you usually get Granowski, correct, He's usually
- 24:31part of these things. And when he didn't show, it
- 24:34leaves us to speculate and that's what Trent and I doing.
- 24:38We speculate that he's not going to go, but we'll see.
- 24:40We don't know. What are you hearing right now,
- 24:41Elliot? Is it what's just been kind of
- 24:43out there, the day-to-day type of thing?
- 24:46Yeah, it's, it's more or less what was out there.
- 24:48What what our Matt Bennett at CBS Sports reported.
- 24:52I think it was over the weekend or, or, or last week at some
- 24:55point. Just that it is day-to-day that
- 24:57it is week to week right now. I, I think all we can really do
- 25:00is, is speculate. You know, I personally, that's,
- 25:03that's where I'm at reading between the line.
- 25:06I, I think it'll be Hank Brown this weekend.
- 25:08But yeah, like, like we've said, we'll, we'll find out more and,
- 25:12and, and learn more as we go. But I mean, I don't, I don't
- 25:15know if if the people in the building really know what's
- 25:18going to be happening this weekend just because of the
- 25:20uncertainty around the injury. Taking that a step further, it
- 25:24was I thought eye opening depth charts released our economics,
- 25:27he's on there, but then we see Hank Brown or Jeremy Holinski.
- 25:32So let's take that a step further.
- 25:35Solinsky's not been listed. Right, he has not been on the
- 25:38depth chart. Now he is.
- 25:40What did you read into that part of it seeing the big force
- 25:42transfer listed for the first time?
- 25:45Yeah, I think it's I think it's I was, you know, a little bit of
- 25:48gamesmanship from from the Hawkeyes.
- 25:50You know, I think it's more of a situation where you're, when
- 25:55you're looking at that, you think, OK, to me what that was
- 25:59was we're going to make Wisconsin prepare for anybody
- 26:02and everybody that they could possibly face.
- 26:04It's Mark Gronowski could go, he might go.
- 26:07Let's make him prepare as if he has to go.
- 26:09But in which case, I think I think Hank Brown is is clearly
- 26:14QB 2. But they've been talking about
- 26:16Hecklinski and, you know, every time we hear, we hear Tim Lester
- 26:20speak of Hecklinski. He's a little ball player there
- 26:23now, and I've heard a little bit about of that from behind the
- 26:26scenes too. And he's got, you know, Eklinski
- 26:29has a little bit of that that moxie that that Drew Tate
- 26:32ability to make a playoff script.
- 26:34He, you know, I wouldn't say he's, well, he's obviously not
- 26:39the most physically imposing specimen of a quarterback, but
- 26:42his ability to just kind of whip a ball in there, put it exactly
- 26:45where it needs to go and, and make some really interesting
- 26:48and, and positive throws is, is just fun.
- 26:50Like, and when was the last time Iowa had a fun quarterback?
- 26:54Probably CJ Beathard. And if you want to go back to
- 26:56Drew Tate, Drew Tate. But I, I think it's an
- 26:59indication that, you know, Kirk is, has really spoken highly of
- 27:03Heklinsky to they really like what they've seen from him.
- 27:06And it's just another opportunity to keep constant
- 27:08guessing ahead of a game that they've had circled pretty much
- 27:11this entire offseason. And yet if we go, we have that
- 27:15look at the depth chart from the offensive side, but then the
- 27:17defensive side, Harold is not listed.
- 27:19So what do we read into that? Well, he did miss, I think, part
- 27:25of one of the final drives against Indiana.
- 27:28So to me, it's just an injury thing.
- 27:30You know, he ended up getting back on the field, if I remember
- 27:32correctly, after he left for a series or two.
- 27:36And I would assume it's just a situation where he needs to get
- 27:39right. And the weird thing about that,
- 27:42too, to me, Ken, is that they listed Jackson Rex Roth as the
- 27:47backup Mike, which is interesting.
- 27:50I think if there's any real change, what's going to happen
- 27:53is Jayden Montgomery might very well get to go.
- 27:55He's a little bit smaller than what I would like to have at the
- 27:58mic, but there's a real possibility that Carson Shire
- 28:01moves over to the mic. Jackson Rex Roth plays the will
- 28:04and maybe we see a Montgomery, a Landon Van Kareex, maybe one of
- 28:09the young guys at the Leo if and when that that, you know, that
- 28:13type of traditional 43 defenses out there.
- 28:16I really, I really don't know what we're going to see.
- 28:19I mean, like I said, I've heard a lot of good things about
- 28:22Montgomery from behind the scenes too, but they do like to
- 28:24have a bigger body in the middle.
- 28:26So if I had to guess, I would say Shire starts with the Mike
- 28:30and Rex Roth at the will because somebody told me that Rex Roth
- 28:33is actually cracked like 50% of practice during the week he's at
- 28:36the will. So that that would not surprise
- 28:39me. I mean, and Rex Roth is probably
- 28:41been the best and the most consistent of the three, which I
- 28:44would not have guessed that this is going into this season, but
- 28:47that would be how I would expect them to go.
- 28:50They might run a little bit more 4:00 to 5:00 than traditionally
- 28:53and you know, even down in the red zone where they might like
- 28:55to go a little bit more 43, but that would be my expectation.
- 29:01But you know, like I said, I could be wrong.
- 29:03They do like Montgomery. So we'll see.
- 29:05Sam Phillips was part of the scrum.
- 29:07He's become one of their go to receivers and on top of it,
- 29:11maybe something that is the most interesting.
- 29:13He just asked about Reese Vanderzee and said, quote, I'm
- 29:16happy he's back. Reese Vanderzee.
- 29:18Now we also know Sam Phillips is a transfer.
- 29:21I don't know. He hasn't had the same kind of
- 29:22media training. If you let the cat out of the
- 29:24bag on that one, if he's going to have to go to the corner
- 29:26office and have a talking to. But regardless of that
- 29:29Vanderzee, we knew this was something that they were
- 29:31targeting potentially this week. Take us in a little bit, Sam
- 29:35Phillips, what he had to say in the potential of return of
- 29:37Vanderzee. Yeah, I was going to share that
- 29:40quote a little bit, David. I got the quote that David got.
- 29:44Got to it on Twitter before I did.
- 29:46But yeah, it sounds like you'll be back.
- 29:49Obviously we'll get the confirmation from from Kirk here
- 29:52soon, but man, that would be huge.
- 29:54Right now you're you're probably going to have to go to your
- 29:57backup quarterback and you you'll get the guy who's
- 30:00probably your most talented receiver, a guy that you can
- 30:03throw a 5050 ball to and trust that he's going to go get it,
- 30:06man. Getting A64215 body.
- 30:09Like Iowa has Dayton Howard on the roster and he's made some
- 30:13really good plays this season. But Reese van der Zee is a
- 30:16different type of athlete. He's bigger, thicker.
- 30:19Like this is just a guy who is seen as I mean, like for for
- 30:25frame of reference, Dayton Howard didn't have a single
- 30:27other offer, whereas Reese Vanders, he had offers from
- 30:29Nebraska, Iowa State, I think, I think another powerful squeak.
- 30:33It squeaked in there at one point.
- 30:35But Reese is just a different type of physical specimen.
- 30:39We saw a little bit of that last year with his catch at Michigan
- 30:41State, the two touchdowns against Illinois State.
- 30:44This would be massive. Pour a Hank Brown to you.
- 30:49Trust them a little bit more to go to the air when you have that
- 30:52type of receiver that can go get a pass.
- 30:54And it's not like that the receiving court doesn't have any
- 30:57of that. But Reese Sanders thee is the
- 31:00epitome of it, right? He's he's the the most talented
- 31:03guy, probably the guy who's gotten the most reps with Hank
- 31:08Brown because he was healthy during the spring, because he
- 31:10was healthy for the majority of camp.
- 31:12So, yeah, getting Reef back at this point would be huge.
- 31:17You're going to try to establish the run at Wisconsin because
- 31:19they have not been good against the run.
- 31:21But being able to go to the air and when you need to go to the
- 31:24air, it makes it feel a lot better when Reef Vanderzee's out
- 31:27there. Enteringer, I thought it had his
- 31:30best game, maybe as a Hawkeye. I know he missed some tackles
- 31:33which, you know, kept kept his numbers down, his analytics down
- 31:36a little bit, but man, he had a heck of a game last time out,
- 31:40did he? I think he met with the media
- 31:42today. What did he have to say?
- 31:45Yeah. So I did not get to go over
- 31:47there and talk to Cohen, Dave. Dave handled that for us.
- 31:50But I can tell you a quote that that I thought was was telling
- 31:53and really interesting from Cohen, who's in his first year
- 31:57as a captain, in his first year as a starter.
- 32:00He referenced the fact that he is a captain this year and that
- 32:05he got to see Jack Campbell be a captain early on in his career
- 32:09in Iowa. And that every time he sees that
- 32:11he's selected to be a captain for Iowa, he thinks about Jack
- 32:14Campbell being the quote, the the best leader that he's ever
- 32:18seen or best leader that he's ever been around.
- 32:20So, so kind of a nice feel good thing from from Cohen today,
- 32:24talking about one of the former Iowa linebackers now, of course,
- 32:27at the Detroit Lions, the the Buttkus award winner.
- 32:31So, you know, kind of a cool feel good thing that you get in
- 32:34the middle of the week. But yeah, I I would agree with
- 32:36you, Ken. I think that if he hadn't missed
- 32:39those tackles, that would have been Cohen and fingers coming
- 32:41out party, so to speak, where he establishes himself as one of
- 32:46the best players on the defense, did lead the team and missed
- 32:48tackles, which I was kind of surprised to see that.
- 32:50You know, that's according to PFF, which isn't always perfect.
- 32:53But yeah, I mean, he's one of the most versatile defensive
- 32:57backs that that Iowa has right now.
- 32:59I think he's a hard hitter. Of course, he had the two fourth
- 33:02down stops. He's a Dodd man like I'm I'm a
- 33:05big cohesion guy. I think he'd be best served by
- 33:08by coming back for his senior year, but continuing to put
- 33:11stuff on on tape like he has. He's he's an NFL guy in my
- 33:14opinion. Whether that special team
- 33:16practice squad or or seen a spot in the 53 man roster or ABC in
- 33:19the field, He's he's an NFL guy in my opinion.
- 33:23Wasn't it him, Trent, that made that play as a freshman?
- 33:26Went on special teams with big. 10 Championship.
- 33:29Unbelievable. Yeah.
- 33:30Yeah, and he's only started six games in his career.
- 33:32That's wild. Only one star coming into this
- 33:34season. Final thing for me, Elliot
- 33:36running back. I know you heard from Nathan
- 33:38McNeil, the freshman out of Tampa who's been certainly a
- 33:41really good Xavier Williams back on the depth chart.
- 33:43Kabari Bolton's dealt with that shoulder injury, gutted out the
- 33:46last couple of weeks. This feels like if it's going to
- 33:48be Hank Brown, Hulk Eklinski, whoever, you want to rely on the
- 33:52run game a whole lot more. How does it shake out?
- 33:54How does the running back look now with Williams back in the
- 33:56mix? You know, what I would expect is
- 33:59that Kamari Moulton still gets the bulk of the carries, Xavier
- 34:03Williams plays that complimentary role and we still
- 34:05see a little bit of Nathan McNeil.
- 34:06We won't see as much as we did of him against Indiana, but I
- 34:10would expect Xavier Williams to come back and be a fixture in
- 34:13the rotation as well as Kamari Moulton being the guy.
- 34:17He's still RV one. Like if there's anything that
- 34:20we've learned in the last two weeks, it's that Kamari Moulton
- 34:22is the most talented back, the most experienced, the most all
- 34:25around back that you have on your roster.
- 34:27But man, getting Xavier Williams back to run between the tackles
- 34:30is massive. To get a guy that can, you know,
- 34:32punch you in the face, but it's also really patient as a runner
- 34:35between the tackles really lets the blocks develop.
- 34:39That's huge, man. And also to have a Nathan McNeil
- 34:42who is more of that, you know, electrify, excuse me,
- 34:45electrifying type of playmaker that can really make plays in
- 34:47space. I think that's how it shakes
- 34:50out. It'll probably be those guys.
- 34:52Obviously, we don't know what's going on.
- 34:54If TJ Washington is fully healthy right now.
- 34:56I think he he left the game against Indiana.
- 34:58I'm not 100% sure, so don't quote me on that.
- 35:01But yeah. And then and then Jazz
- 35:04Patterson, not on the deaf chart again this week.
- 35:05So it'll probably be a healthy dose of of those three guys
- 35:09against the rush defense that have struggled.
- 35:11Elliot Clef, hawkeyeinsider.com Part of 24/7 Sports.
- 35:15Elliot, appreciate what you do for Trenton High and Tuesday,
- 35:17really do. I will try and run you down next
- 35:19week if your schedule allows. Thank you, Sir.
- 35:21We'll talk to you soon. Sounds good.
- 35:23Thanks guys. Good to talk to you Elliot
- 35:25Clough as we check in on into Iowa City and what's going on
- 35:29with the Hawks. That Vanderzee little nugget to
- 35:31get you on earth is pretty good. Juicy that's.
- 35:35Awesome. I can.
- 35:36I can already see it. Yeah.
- 35:37Sam Coach wants to talk to you. How do we do things now?
- 35:42He's going to be asked. Parents is going to be this
- 35:45afternoon. It's good.
- 35:46That's an hour from now. That's pretty good press.
- 35:48Maybe a lot of Intel coming out of that presser.
- 35:51Now it's Kirk. Sure, you got it right, right,
- 35:54right. But there'll be a lot of ears, a
- 35:57lot of interest on what he has to say on this one.
- 36:00Who's going to start from Wisconsin?
- 36:01It's, it's not Billy, I think Billy Edwards.
- 36:03Said the Southern Illinois transfer last week.
- 36:05He was the guy that started the game and he was, I mean, as good
- 36:09as the rest of the garbage, yeah.
- 36:10I've had terrible quarterback play, terrible quarterback play.
- 36:14We'll have Nick Osen that will. Yeah, tomorrow, Nick Osen.
- 36:17Joining us tomorrow. To talk more about that, we'll
- 36:20take a time out Sutton, because. That wasn't.
- 36:25Anything is Sutton. We'll take a time out, come
- 36:27back, wrap up our number one, our 2 baseball and Big 12 is.
- 36:32Simmons. Simmons, there you.
- 36:33Go Hunter Simmons. Hunter Simmons, you'll in all
- 36:38likelihood be under Center for Wisconsin.
- 36:40Yes, Nick Osen is going to join us tomorrow, our old buddy Nick
- 36:43Miller and Condon on Des Moines Sports station, 106.3 KXNO.
- 36:46All right, final couple of minutes, first hour of our
- 36:49program off the bench coming up two until 5, Lucas and Sean, and
- 36:53then overtime. Iowa, 5 to 6.
- 36:56The 2025 Baltimore Ravens through five games have given up
- 37:01177 points. The 2000 Baltimore defence in 16
- 37:07games, gave up 165 points. Wow, what a difference.
- 37:11Everybody keeps Alamari wait till Lamar comes back.
- 37:13OK, Yeah, he's great players, there's no denying that.
- 37:16But he doesn't play defence and and they're still the favorite
- 37:20somehow to win the North. Well, you believe in Pittsburgh.
- 37:25Well, no. You believe in Cleveland.
- 37:31I believe in more than I did to start the season.
- 37:34To win the division. I said I believe in the more
- 37:36than I did to start the season. Cincinnati.
- 37:38Well, they just got Joe Flacco. So you're buying some Cincinnati
- 37:43stock? No, I've got enough trying to
- 37:44sell. OK.
- 37:46But if can Flacco be a Band-Aid till Burrough?
- 37:48Because Burroughs not till December, right?
- 37:51Browning was so bad. I mean, he was terrible.
- 37:53Talk about a miss. I thought a competent backup.
- 37:55Well. Trent, we saw him as a competent
- 37:57backup, right? And whatever he had, that is
- 38:00gone, long gone in a big time way.
- 38:02Can he be a Band-Aid? Look at the receivers he's got.
- 38:07Right. And throwing up those moon balls
- 38:10and making some plays down the field and opening it up a little
- 38:12bit. Between the ears of nothing
- 38:15else, he's got a huge edge on Browning.
- 38:17Maybe I'm. When I first saw it I just kind
- 38:21of rolled my eyes, but maybe it is worth a a deeper look at
- 38:24Flacco and I have to look at some numbers and see.
- 38:26Because if he's back the first week of December, how many is
- 38:29that Five games left or 4? Do they play till January 7th
- 38:33this year? I think it's later.
- 38:35So maybe five games back for Burrell, if they can get him.
- 38:38He's such a difference maker. He's one of the best
- 38:40quarterbacks in the league. Flacco's numbers are.
- 38:42No, they're awful. They're awful. 2 touchdowns, 6
- 38:45interceptions. Been sacked 9 times.
- 38:47QB rating the traditional one a 60.
- 38:50Completion percentage of 58%. Maybe they shouldn't have given
- 38:53up on Browning. Lost a couple of fumbles, he.
- 38:58Played a lot of football, man. There's a guy who's hanging
- 39:00around. Yes, he is.
- 39:01Doesn't need to, I wouldn't think.
- 39:02Who knows, maybe the circumstances, who knows?
- 39:05He needs to. Paycheck, but somebody is going
- 39:06to win that division. And so the Ravens are still
- 39:09favoured. Steelers are three in one home
- 39:11for the Browns. Go to Cincinnati.
- 39:14Could we be talking about 5 and one God?
- 39:17Pittsburgh Steelers. And.
- 39:19They'll get to the playoffs and lose in their first game, even
- 39:21at home. With Aaron Rodgers and the
- 39:23curtain comes down on a Hall of Fame career.
- 39:25Or does it? Our number 2, We'll get into
- 39:29baseball with our buddy Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com, pick his
- 39:33brain on the series we're watching right now, and then
- 39:36we'll talk to Matt Postons on the Big 12, both football and
- 39:39basketball. Transplays of the Day Circus
- 39:41sports sponsor Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the
- 39:45Iowa Sports Radio Network.
