Latest / Easy Double podcast / EDP58: Maurie Plant Meet / Berlin Half / Sound Running's The Ten
Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 58.
- 0:06I'm joined on our kind of usual, but not exactly the same time
- 0:11slot as usual, thanks to some daylight saving time changes
- 0:15over in Europe. Whereas where Dean and I are
- 0:19located, we stay static year round, which we can unpack in a
- 0:23SEC. So I'll bring in the man who has
- 0:26gone forward an hour. Owen Smith, is that you?
- 0:29Yeah, I literally like, was standing at the edge of the bed
- 0:32this morning before my run because it was like darker.
- 0:36And I was like, wait a minute, I taught the mornings I meant to
- 0:39be brighter. Yeah.
- 0:42So instead of 6, I got up at 6:00 this morning.
- 0:46I really. I got up at 5:00.
- 0:49Is that? Yeah.
- 0:54Yeah, so it was. But as the summer goes, it'll be
- 0:59brighter in the evenings, brighter in the in the mornings.
- 1:03So yeah, it's like the evenings will get brighter now, which is
- 1:06really nice. Like in the middle of summer.
- 1:09It doesn't, it stays bright until like 10:00, which is
- 1:12pretty cool. But yeah, no, it's not the
- 1:16worst. We make, we make things work
- 1:18here. So bit of calculations and all
- 1:21that. But yeah, we've got a time.
- 1:22Source. So then Dean, welcome to you as
- 1:28well. Am I understanding this correct?
- 1:31Was there a vote like a while ago or has there been in the
- 1:34past in WA as to whether to introduce daylight savings or
- 1:38not? There was and it, it played out
- 1:42a little bit like was it the, the Scots wanting to leave the
- 1:48the UKI think they strangely enough, I think people were of
- 1:52the view that the cows wouldn't know when to come home.
- 1:55And so we voted it down. So most of the country do adjust
- 2:00their clocks for daylight savings, but we did, We don't
- 2:02here in WA, which is a bit annoying because, yeah, that
- 2:07extra daylight would be nice. It depends.
- 2:11I don't think everyone makes the most of it in summer, and that's
- 2:15why having it later in end to your day is often a more
- 2:19productive one. But yeah, that's what we're
- 2:23that's what we've got here, Ryan.
- 2:24And it's, it's, I forget Owen's actually going into his daylight
- 2:30saving period and we're just rotating out of ours.
- 2:34Yeah, so the the East Coast will be coming an hour closer to us,
- 2:38and Owen too is coming an hour closer.
- 2:40So like from both sides, they're moving in.
- 2:44I had to I was trying to remember that my mum used to say
- 2:47this analogy. You you spring forward and you
- 2:50fall back as to like how to remember whether the hour goes
- 2:54forwards or backwards. So in spring, I mean this is for
- 2:58UK and Ireland listeners, spring the hour goes forwards in
- 3:02awesome or fall if you American the hour goes back.
- 3:05But obviously that's the body opposite with the seasons in
- 3:08Australia. So we're falling back where we
- 3:12to be adopting. Yeah.
- 3:16It annoys me the way Adelaide is like 30 minute 30.
- 3:19Was it 30 minutes ahead of Melbourne or something?
- 3:22That makes no sense whatsoever. It's really stupid.
- 3:26And so then 2 1/2 hours or 1 1/2 hours to us.
- 3:29Yeah, A. Lot of people have, like when I
- 3:31was in Brisbane, like the compounds work for dead offices
- 3:34in Adelaide and Melbourne. So when daylight savings kicks
- 3:38in it just messes up everything. It's like a pain you do not
- 3:41need. But we made it.
- 3:45We all made it to record at the same time, which is no small
- 3:49feat based on how complicated we just made that.
- 3:52Yeah, spent 5 minutes bamboozling the listeners, so
- 3:55yeah, sorry about that. Well, we've got some good news.
- 4:03We're recording London call in episode 3 this Wednesday coming.
- 4:06So if anyone has any questions for the lads, Jake Smith has
- 4:10just ran bail in half. If anyone's been watching Jake
- 4:14ran to Japan's videos. I'm sure there's plenty of
- 4:16questions to be asking him as always.
- 4:19And Tim's bubbling over nicely. So yeah, look forward to get
- 4:23that one out to you the back end of this week.
- 4:25And you can get in touch via the Instagram or the e-mail
- 4:28easydoublepod@gmail.com. So this episode is pretty big.
- 4:34We had the premiere track meet for the season in Australia in
- 4:37Melbourne, the Murray plant meet.
- 4:39We had some sound running 10,000 meters over in the US and the
- 4:44half marathon in Berlin. As I just touched on, we've got
- 4:48a bit of news, YouTube Diaries and Double Trouble as always.
- 4:53So I guess we'll hear about the training that we've been doing
- 4:56as well. Be rude not to.
- 5:00Will we start with the results over in Melbourne?
- 5:03Seen as that's probably pound for pound as per the listeners
- 5:07are interested the biggest event this weekend.
- 5:12I think so. And before we do that, Ryan,
- 5:14shall I introduce our new segment sponsor?
- 5:20So for those who've probably heard us mention Bix multiple
- 5:25times across the podcast, they're very kindly supporting
- 5:31the pods. So shout out to Vlad and the
- 5:34team at Bix. So Bix is a a nutrition based
- 5:41product. They have a host of different
- 5:44products on their website at bixvitamins.com, salt slash
- 5:50hydration tablets that you can add to your fluids as well as
- 5:54gels that we ingest quite a few of during our training weeks, as
- 6:00well as the carbohydrate mixes. So they also have some nice
- 6:05merch that lad very kindly supports us with and they're
- 6:08supporting the podcast. So if anyone does want to
- 6:13purchase pics, yeah, jump onto their website and use the code
- 6:16double for 20% off. Double as an easy double.
- 6:23It is, but just the double so it's even easier to to plug in
- 6:26and it's not case sensitive. They ship worldwide apart from
- 6:30gels to the UK. That's the only carve out, but
- 6:33you can find that they're working on that. 20% off it's
- 6:37not a bad, not a bad little deduction.
- 6:41It is that's very kind. So yeah, we we appreciate lad
- 6:45doing that for the for the folks that TuneIn.
- 6:50Does it mean the hot cross bun days are numbered?
- 6:53It does for you, Ryan. So yes, Vlad very kindly agreed
- 6:57that it would only be right that we wouldn't conflict anyone on
- 7:00the pod. So he's very kindly helping us
- 7:03all out. So yeah, there should be some
- 7:07some gels coming your way. Hopefully the salted strawberry
- 7:10ones. Maybe he could.
- 7:12He could start. Doing a hot cross bum range.
- 7:15Speak to him about. A big stuff on a nice big stuff
- 7:17for everyone. Even a Biscoff gel.
- 7:21I wonder what that would be like.
- 7:22Yeah, I'll go Biscoff anything, to be honest.
- 7:27We are not as much too much of A tangent to go on.
- 7:31Let's get into the results. Thanks Bix for your support and
- 7:36Murray Plant then. So this one's got a gold label,
- 7:39which if anyone listened to the the Elmgren interview, he
- 7:43alluded to like, oh, isn't there even like a gold label meet down
- 7:47under? So it does cross the ears of the
- 7:51elites in Europe and even in the US because a few of them make
- 7:57the journey over. So there's, I don't know how
- 8:00many, maybe 5-6 guys who'd raced in Poland at the World Indoors
- 8:04the week prior. 67. 6-7, whatever that means.
- 8:09I'm not even getting into that. Kids will be buzzing.
- 8:15So we'll start, we'll go through the results as per how they went
- 8:18on the night chronologically. So I think first up was the
- 8:23men's 3000 meters and I'm not sure this actually made the cut
- 8:27for the stream, which is quite annoying given the caliber of
- 8:32the field and the athletes that were in it.
- 8:36A somewhat unknown guy end up coming out with the wind.
- 8:39Jackson Sharp 74102 from Seth O'Donnell 74111 and Brian Faye
- 8:46the Irishman in 3rd 74285 and then some of the other names who
- 8:51are a bit further down than results.
- 8:53You've got the likes of Jack Rain and Morgan McDonald, Sue
- 8:56Mcswain, Jimmy Hanson amongst others, Adam Goddard and
- 9:01Trippers. So the field was stacked here.
- 9:07And what do you make of Jackson Sharp getting the win over them
- 9:11lot? Yeah.
- 9:14I mean, it's an, it's not a completely unfamiliar name in
- 9:18terms of results, but perhaps put against that field, you
- 9:23would say it is like we saw what Brian Fay did at Will Cross
- 9:28recently. We've seen Seth obviously be
- 9:34very competitive in pretty much all of the domestic races here.
- 9:40And then similarly with Morgan McDonald, you know, he's, you
- 9:44followed his change of coach, you know, he's building form,
- 9:47You know, he's only getting fitter and fitter.
- 9:49So those guys in particular, you assume like if if we were
- 9:55picking a winner before the race, you'd almost guarantee
- 9:59that Jackson Sharp is not who we would have picked, right?
- 10:03Yeah, which we did, didn't we? So I remember I went with Brian
- 10:06Fay. I think I went with Stewie for
- 10:09the romantic story. What did you?
- 10:11Who'd you have, Dean? I think maybe Morgan McDonald
- 10:16had a guess. So I've seen some clips and Seth
- 10:20goes way off the front in true Seth fashion, tries to run them
- 10:24all off the feet and this guy like literally gets him with
- 10:28five meters to go or something. When I seen the clip, I already
- 10:32knew the results. And when I'm looking with 200 to
- 10:35go, you're like, how on earth does he win this race?
- 10:38Like Seth's got it worn. Yeah, his seconds clear at the
- 10:42bell, isn't he? And even along the back
- 10:45straight, it was Jackson Sharp and Brian Faye trailing, running
- 10:51together. Brian Fay, I think, was sitting
- 10:53on Jackson Sharp shoulder, wasn't it?
- 10:54All just right behind him. But the gap looked too big.
- 10:58But I think the commentators caught it pretty well.
- 11:01They could they, you know, like the piano on the back analogy,
- 11:05like Seth was starting to tie up and it was probably between 100
- 11:09metres out and 50 metres out that maybe you just gave them
- 11:11enough of a sniff. And then, yeah, they just closed
- 11:15like freight trains. His form can't do him any
- 11:20justice in in that. Jack Raynor done a lot of
- 11:24unforgiving work in the middle few.
- 11:26He sort of started dragging that second group up to set and then
- 11:33he just dropped off. He probably burnt his matches
- 11:36too early. Bullsham.
- 11:38Yeah. Jackson Sharp, He's a pro
- 11:40athlete with Hoka. He was wearing a Hoka kit.
- 11:42So I think he's probably based in America.
- 11:45Is he? Not sure.
- 11:47I haven't really heard of much of them.
- 11:49Yeah, some clothes. And Saturday, your agent is just
- 11:52caught on the line. The kid looked all right too, I
- 11:56thought. It's clean.
- 12:01Yes, that guy Jackson. He's the second time this year
- 12:05he's run 741 exactly. Bizarrely, in February he
- 12:10finished ninth, bought down the field.
- 12:14Nico Young Negus, Darren Mcelhaney, Ethan Strand, Jodie
- 12:18Beamish. So like standing amongst the
- 12:22best of the best domestically in Australia certainly wouldn't
- 12:25have fazed them with these. He's racing against them lot in
- 12:28the USA. Surely like Seth runs this the
- 12:34wrong way. Like he's not slow.
- 12:36He's got like I think he's around 336 for 1500.
- 12:40So like he's able to like kick, so going out ahead of the pacer,
- 12:47like surely it's a statement, but it's it's a bit like stupid
- 12:50when it doesn't come off. Like I'm sure if he just sits in
- 12:53for like AK and then he's able to like just wind up, he'd
- 12:56probably burn all them off anyway.
- 13:00Makes for boring spectating though.
- 13:04But not even because he's winding it up.
- 13:05Like, yeah, I don't know. I think he wins this if he
- 13:09raises it this matter. You reckon he's not maximizing
- 13:13his Physiology with the way he's going out?
- 13:15Sure. The way he's running it is so,
- 13:17so painful, like going out hard trying to hold and like you've
- 13:20seen the last 150 meters, like he just died a death.
- 13:25And perhaps as well, like they, I think it was mentioned, wasn't
- 13:28it, that the conditions weren't perfect either, right?
- 13:30Like it was a bit breezy. So you're paying a tax every,
- 13:36every lap that you're running the straight into a headwind
- 13:40when you could easily, yeah, be sitting behind someone at least
- 13:42get a bit of a discount on that. But that's got to that's going
- 13:45to take a toll. Yeah, especially as he seems to
- 13:51be getting increasingly scientific with his train and
- 13:54doing his lactates and stuff. And then when it comes to the
- 13:58race is just like, right, let's just fucking get on the limits
- 14:01of this ticker and see how long we can stick it there for.
- 14:08Oh, that was the other thing. Because I was, because I tip
- 14:11Stewie. I looked at this guy's head to
- 14:29He's around 1313 and a 353 miles, so he's quietly ticking
- 14:36along in the US. If you're Stewie, surely you're
- 14:41sort of getting sick again, beaten and you just go to the
- 14:45roads like there's way more money there.
- 14:48He just needs to get more fitter just to hate the threshold
- 14:51training and because like, he is a good runner.
- 14:54He's just, I think he's just lost the legs for the track.
- 15:03Yeah. I mean, I was kind of thinking
- 15:04critically as well, but then I thought when did he sign?
- 15:07Was on like 6 weeks ago or something.
- 15:11He probably needs a good three or four months, see if the
- 15:15change in training can get anything out of him.
- 15:18Maybe in like the the European summer, the outdoors.
- 15:22That'll be maybe when we'll see if the on group are able to get
- 15:28the old Stewie back out. Yeah, it'd be interesting to
- 15:32see. Men's 800 meters was Next up.
- 15:39Luke Boys got the win 14521 from Dan Williams 14616 and a Dutch
- 15:45guy Troy Van Deepen 14619 and 3rd.
- 15:52Not too much to note from me for this, other than the Rinaldi lot
- 15:58who were cleaning up a few weeks ago.
- 16:00I think that is it just Bob Abdul Rahman and Nathan
- 16:06Cumberbatch, the Trinidad guy who were in this race, but they
- 16:09were further down 7th and 8th. So I think they had a fair few
- 16:15guys who raced in the world indoors last week, so maybe
- 16:19they're just over the hill a little bit.
- 16:22Yeah, I mean, it's probably a comment on maybe it gives a bit
- 16:29of an insight into how hard it is to travel back from from the
- 16:33US and and freshen up in time like I mean these guys are.
- 16:38Yeah, like you say, maybe it's it's peaking, but also just the
- 16:43the the travel must have taken you regime takes quite a big
- 16:46toll. Yeah, because what they race,
- 16:49they were the race Saturday in Europe and then Saturday to
- 16:53Saturday in Australia. One of these is complete travel.
- 17:02That being said though, and I know Owen, you in particular
- 17:06love talking about triathlon, but did you see Christian
- 17:11Blumenfelt what he did in the last week Say he raced in
- 17:15Geelong, he he raced. So three weeks ago he raced a
- 17:19full line man in New Zealand, then he went over to Geelong 2
- 17:22weeks later did a 70.3, beat two of the best triathletes in the
- 17:27world, one of them being Hayden Wild and then he went all the
- 17:30way to his Oceanside in the US six days later raced again and
- 17:36beat everyone in that. So whatever he did he managed to
- 17:39recover in time within six days and do 2 half Iron Man's and
- 17:43beat the and run some of the fastest run splits in half Iron
- 17:47Man history. So I don't know he was doing
- 17:51something wrong. Yeah, he is a he's a freak, but
- 17:55I presume he flew like first class from Australia to America,
- 18:00which helps when you can stretch it.
- 18:02The whole thing is being like stuck in that one position for
- 18:05hours and hours and hours, whereas he can like literally
- 18:09recline life fully parallel with the floor like he is.
- 18:13It's grand. You're well up.
- 18:15Like you've seen Georgia Bell her video on Instagram.
- 18:18She. Did say living?
- 18:19The life on them flights, like there's no jet lag, you're OK
- 18:23like. Cattle class, it's a bit
- 18:26different, you reckon? Yeah.
- 18:28It does a lot of that. Strange analogy, but you you
- 18:34reckon Dean Runners are a bit like footballers, As in soccer
- 18:39players like Premier League princesses and triathletes are
- 18:42more like the AFL breed but rough and ready.
- 18:47I don't know. I mean whatever.
- 18:49I mean the Christian so scientific and calculated and
- 18:52he, he speaks about it on the podcast.
- 18:56He was speaking about it on a podcast I was listening to.
- 18:58He was going into how we, he did a block of training and then
- 19:01would peak for these series of races and like in terms of
- 19:05training load, how he was managing his four or five days
- 19:07of travel and all those sorts of things.
- 19:09So maybe maybe it's a bit of a mix.
- 19:13I think these guys look, did they potentially peak for
- 19:15indoors and then and then maybe not recover in time or
- 19:19prioritize recovery? I, I, I don't know.
- 19:22And it's probably a mixture of all those things.
- 19:25And then like I would mentioned, probably how you're travelling
- 19:29like these, these guys, would they be prioritizing it as much
- 19:32as they were indoors? I wouldn't have thought so.
- 19:34It's probably an opportunity for a bit of a payday, just as I
- 19:38guess. Georgia Hunt Georgia Hunter Val
- 19:41did not come across here because she wants to run a fast 1500.
- 19:45She came across because she was getting paid a shit load of
- 19:47money. I'd say she didn't come across
- 19:53to lose either though. I bet you that wasn't in the
- 19:54plan. They had delighted fun.
- 19:57Jocks the women's 3K. Owen, your mate won this one.
- 20:07Rosie Davis. Rosie Rosie Davis in 845 from
- 20:13Modi Sky Ring close 2nd 847 and Georgia Griffith 848 and it's
- 20:19worth mentioning Corafi and Ryan 4th given that she was she ran
- 20:23with these girls for such a long period of the race.
- 20:27So I did actually see this one and it's funny because like more
- 20:33the the way she, she probably suffers just as much as anyone
- 20:36else, but she certainly shows it a lot more.
- 20:39Like it looks like she's genuinely got a gun on her jaws,
- 20:43like a teeth of grit and her jaws to the side.
- 20:47And if whoever's racing against her is able to like glance up at
- 20:51the big screen at any point when the cameras on her, that must
- 20:54certainly give them like a bit of encouragement because she can
- 20:57see how much pain she's in and like fair play to her.
- 21:01Quite ironically as well, she's the first one to kind of take it
- 21:05on. I think it was like 600 meters
- 21:06out. So when she done that, they kind
- 21:10of detached Karthi and Ryan. So it was down to the three of
- 21:13them and then Rose and Georgia, whether they let Mordy stay on
- 21:20the front or whether they were just kind of holding on at this
- 21:23point, they let her take it to fingers about 200 to go anyway.
- 21:27And then Rose made their move on that 200 out.
- 21:31And surprisingly to me, Georgia didn't go with her because Rose
- 21:35didn't just go ahead of Mordy. She kind of put two or three
- 21:39meters there straight away. So then when you see that
- 21:42Georgia failed to kind of bridge that gap, it was just Rose's
- 21:47race from that point. She just had to close up the up
- 21:50the finishing straight, which she did.
- 21:52So she comes from like the the 5K10K point of view.
- 21:57She's got the 5000 meter national record and George's
- 22:02she's the actual 3000 meter record holder.
- 22:05So you could say the race favored her in that sense.
- 22:09But I mean, they're all kind of as good as each other and it's
- 22:12just who's there on the night. Yeah, and I think Rose didn't
- 22:20have the most straightforward like build up for this.
- 22:22Like I think she was injured and I think she was sick a while
- 22:26back. So for her to come out and be
- 22:29firing and like take the scalps of like Georgia and Marty,
- 22:33that's a it's pretty good going and it's good showing like early
- 22:37season for Rose, like it is only March or April soon.
- 22:41But like, yeah, she'll have a good summer hopefully.
- 22:45Should be aiming for calm games I'd say.
- 22:46Would she? You assume so that's like the
- 22:50main target. I would, I would think other
- 22:53than World indoors that was just on right.
- 22:55That's the main track crescendo I think outside of the Diamond
- 23:00leagues for this year for Aussies.
- 23:05Probably if anything, rather than like a crystal angle for
- 23:08Modi, like that's a really good result to finish ahead of
- 23:12Georgia. So I'd say she'd be buzzing with
- 23:14that. I was before we go into the next
- 23:20result. I was listening to the let's run
- 23:22a lot before their recap last week of the world indoors and
- 23:27good old Jonathan Gaul. He he always words a lot better
- 23:32than me, like as in he's he's done his biggest losers of the
- 23:37meat and in brackets like kind of.
- 23:40But he referenced Jess Hall's failure to obtain a gold medal.
- 23:45You're doubling down on that one.
- 23:47So I might have to shoot my message and say thanks for
- 23:50listening. John, I appreciate your support
- 23:51and. What was his?
- 23:54What was? His What was his take?
- 23:56Was it the same? He's rubbed all my points.
- 23:59Yeah, you're saying that the absence of the main competitors
- 24:03and she's meddled so many Times Now.
- 24:06She's 20. I didn't reference age, but he
- 24:08said she's 29. So like, she's kind of in the
- 24:12peak of her career. Obviously, you can't race
- 24:14forever. Just acknowledging it was a good
- 24:17opportunity for a gold medal. Are they wrong like she?
- 24:26I think if she want the gold medal, she just put all her eggs
- 24:28in one basket. Like the the way the event was
- 24:31laid out was going to be really hard to win both.
- 24:35And in the end she won none, which is pretty.
- 24:39I don't know. I think if you're just so like
- 24:40you want to win these now, you're at that level and when
- 24:43there's no faith, keep your egg on.
- 24:44Like when else are you going to do it?
- 24:50I saw something today from CDs Mag, I think it was that
- 24:54released it. I don't know if you guys saw it,
- 24:56that it was a shout out to Jess Hull because she's raced every
- 24:59major global Championship since 2019.
- 25:03She has indeed her, she missed some cross country and Belarus
- 25:09or something like that, some world championship in Belarus.
- 25:13So you can subscribe that one. I think, I think maybe the
- 25:18comment there is that her performance is now a reflection
- 25:23of consistency over a good period of time and that she
- 25:26rocks up and races race as well. Obviously Rojo was buzzing with
- 25:35that element. You know, she gets he gets
- 25:39really offended when people don't go to the the meats,
- 25:42doesn't he? He was, he was back and he was
- 25:46just a finer. Good on Roger.
- 25:51Chair Men's Men's 1500 meters. This was the narrative is that
- 26:01Cam Myers is just the if not the global Starboy is certainly the
- 26:05domestic Starboy 330.42 out there by himself 7 second margin
- 26:13to 2nd place and the recent bronze medalist at the world
- 26:17indoors. I'll ask you about that in a
- 26:20minute for Adam Spencer in 2nd 337 and Callum Davis also making
- 26:25it onto the podium in what was a deep field.
- 26:28So I think that's a good step up from Carl Davis 33903.
- 26:34It was a deep field for the first like 200 meters and then
- 26:39three of the main people fell, so it comes not so deep.
- 26:47Yeah. So what happened there?
- 26:50I don't even know I I don't know who fell or who could have to,
- 26:54but three of the big guns, Jack Anstee, Robert Farrakhan, Jude
- 26:58Thomas, and then turning croak and as well, they all hit the
- 27:01deck, which I would have loved to seen Jude Thomas because he's
- 27:05erased in a while and you don't watch shake.
- 27:07He's in like he could have pushed Count Myers under that
- 27:093:30. If any of them boys are in it,
- 27:11especially Robert Farrakhan, like he's not coming from
- 27:13America to to just play character like he's going to try
- 27:19and win. So it's disappointing that they
- 27:21all hit the deck. And, and remember the comments
- 27:25we're making about Jack Anstey, right?
- 27:27In terms of wanting an opportunity to send a message,
- 27:31that'd be real shame. Hit a point to Bros.
- 27:38It'd be Falcon gossip. I was going to go there.
- 27:47It's a cheap joke. Nasty joke.
- 27:49It was. But hang on, comes run, go on.
- 27:54No, yeah, that's what I was going to take it to.
- 27:57At the risk of quoting something else I saw on the Internet
- 28:00that's inaccurate, but I did say some stats on fastest times ever
- 28:05in before. Is it like run up to May of each
- 28:09year? Because obviously the season
- 28:12more or less kicks off around the European summer or Northern
- 28:16Hemisphere summer. And I think this might be one of
- 28:19the fastest time. Like on that list was like Sir
- 28:22John Walker from New Zealand and other names from overtime.
- 28:26But that 330 low that he ran is like, I think one of the
- 28:30fastest, if not the fastest time ever for this time of year.
- 28:36Like you'd put your house on it him, he would have won that
- 28:40World Indoor 1500 I think 100%. He's just in phenomenal shape at
- 28:45the moment. He's like leveled up.
- 28:50Yeah. I mean, well, so the guy that
- 28:52finished third at that championship was 7 seconds
- 28:56behind him. And I know the travel, we spoke
- 28:57about the travel, but it would it be 7 seconds of jet lag?
- 29:02Would it? Who won it?
- 29:04Your man or that Garcia a lot from Spain won the 1500 and then
- 29:07Nader was second. Nader was like right behind him.
- 29:11Yeah, Garcia, remember the Yeah, Mario or is it?
- 29:19The poor man, I was just getting lost in there.
- 29:21Yeah, the non on one. Yeah, I was just getting lost in
- 29:26Kam Strava then because a little a little bad, he told me.
- 29:30Done 4 by 5 minutes at LC-1 straight after this race.
- 29:33So I was going through straw. Let's see if you could see it on
- 29:36there, which you can. So that's an in the words of
- 29:42like Om ITU verified. But yeah, straight from the win
- 29:46here, 330 to 4 by 5 minutes, three, 15320 pace.
- 29:56What's your question on? I was going to say what pace.
- 30:01Yeah. What do you think about 3:15 as
- 30:03LT1? Yeah, like it's, it's not like
- 30:08her. Like you see, like your man,
- 30:09like Phil Sassman and he's doing like, I don't know, like 3
- 30:13minute kilometers for God knows how long.
- 30:18But then Cam is a 1500 meter guy so I would have thought it'd be
- 30:21faster to be honest. Yeah, it was interesting.
- 30:26I mean, someone we had coffee with recently, Ron was talking
- 30:29about how difficult it is to be very precise with the LT1.
- 30:33Like where is that inflection point and that point of is it
- 30:37fat oxidization versus LT1? And then the more what seems
- 30:42more universal measurement of LT2, like I wonder it's, it
- 30:47seems, I don't know, it sounds a degree.
- 30:50There might be a degree of subjectivity or variance in how
- 30:53people measure it. But importantly that would be
- 30:56very aerobic for him I would imagine and conservative, which
- 31:00is is cool to hear that people are doing a lot of work at that
- 31:03aerobic intensity. And he does so much of his
- 31:08day-to-day training like that, I mean, granted, probably a bit
- 31:12faster where he's doing his like K reps and stuff, but he's a big
- 31:16double threshold guy, isn't he? And very conservative with
- 31:20distributing his effort and stuff.
- 31:22So it's interesting. Like it's definitely piqued my
- 31:25curiosity as to how people can get so fit off being so
- 31:29controlled and so sensible and training.
- 31:33You can say that, detach from the ego.
- 31:35I can say that in the way you're approaching it, you're very
- 31:38sensible on Saturday. Sounds sarcastic, but I don't
- 31:44think it actually is. No, it's not genuine on
- 31:46Saturday. What I got lost in in his Strava
- 31:54though because of a run he's done today and I clicked into
- 31:57the comments. This is quite funny.
- 31:59So he's just done a 6K run this evening?
- 32:03Like his is easy double and Christian all.
- 32:07Rickson's commented saying King give us the schedule for Diamond
- 32:11League and track summer need to get the Cam van ready and and
- 32:17he's replied saying isn't he just named all of his Diamond
- 32:20League races. He's going to Carl Ruth
- 32:23Stockholm, Oslo, Paris pre and com games boom.
- 32:28And then Christian says I want a world record that the Mile in
- 32:32London kick party against care last 20.
- 32:35Meters shit. That'll be so good.
- 32:41That's. Good, some good heart.
- 32:44Some other fellas asked them are you running the Australian
- 32:47championships in April and he says I won't be ducking.
- 32:52He's fired up. You reckon that's a reference to
- 32:58something? Maybe an indirect one.
- 33:02I'm buzzing he's he's planning on doing COM games.
- 33:06That'll be good. And then, yeah, we we did have
- 33:11the Josh Care Mile deeper in the agenda, but we might as well
- 33:13talk about it now. I'd never clue what that was for
- 33:18ages. When it's like 222 I was like,
- 33:21what is he on about? And then two makes sense.
- 33:24Too long a bow, isn't it? Yeah.
- 33:27Like fucking hell no. And it's not like it's not a
- 33:32bespoke. So for context for listeners,
- 33:35there was there's been an announcement, is it by Brooks?
- 33:38Is it by a sponsor? It's about 6 different media
- 33:41outlets I think, yeah. Yeah, just to say that he's
- 33:45attempting the and it's like they're breaking 2 project, but
- 33:48it's it's being referred to as the is it 222 project.
- 33:52So the the he's attempting to run a world record for the mile
- 33:58in the London Diamond League. And to do that, he needs to run
- 34:04is it 3 minutes and 42 seconds, which equates to 222 seconds.
- 34:10And so the reference clustered across the Internet is 222.
- 34:17It's just click baity. Yeah, Is anything for a bit of
- 34:22no, not a bit of attention as in his attention seeking, but more
- 34:26so from the brand to like package it up and market it this
- 34:29way. Like, why isn't it good enough
- 34:31to just say you're going to you're going to chase a world
- 34:33record that's been almost in well, that has been impossible
- 34:36to get by. Just says.
- 34:40Not they type that straight into AI, and that's what AI spit out.
- 34:45Like, give me a fun, quirky way to say we're going to break them
- 34:48all. Record.
- 34:49Yeah, that's all. If it makes it mainstream, then
- 34:53it's probably had quite the effect and it's got us talking.
- 34:58Like whereas if you're saying you you're going to run a world
- 35:01record or you're going to shoot for a world record at a Diamond
- 35:03League event, like is that not what you watch Monaco for?
- 35:08Like it seems like that doesn't get you as it doesn't catch your
- 35:13eye as much as this has. So maybe it's the right thing.
- 35:18Just sounds like. It risks though, and maybe I'm
- 35:21wider the mark here, but if they're trying to captivate the
- 35:25wider audience as in like the non core athletic fans, it risks
- 35:30almost missing the point of the fact that he's run like the
- 35:34fastest time ever a world record and people just getting caught
- 35:38up in this 222 thing like how many seconds it's taken.
- 35:42Forget about that. Just look about the fastest
- 35:45times ever run on the planet. Those 222 get him the world
- 35:51record. So is the world record like 342
- 35:55high or like what is it? 43 low like 43.13 I think.
- 36:02Yeah, I think that's from anger, Brits and rap.
- 36:06That's that Al Guruge fellow, is it?
- 36:08Is he still got it? Al Guruge.
- 36:10Yeah, I think so. 343.13 yeah so he just needs to get 42342 for a
- 36:22mile which is. Bolds to I mean, I guess that's
- 36:29that's why they're doing it. But they announced it so early.
- 36:32They've kind of put themselves in the firing line because it's
- 36:36not as though I mean, yes, care has just won the World
- 36:39Championships, the world indoors, but it's not as though
- 36:42he's 1,000,000 miles better than anyone else.
- 36:45So like someone like Cam or like Cole Hawker, like the Goose,
- 36:51they could now target London Diamond Lee, get themselves to
- 36:54peak then and know that Josh Kerr is going to give them a tow
- 36:59for at least 1500 meters at world record pace.
- 37:04I think that's his aim, like that's his aim to get lower to
- 37:06people fast guys in that race, because there's gonna be Pacers
- 37:10and 100%. So all you need to do is took on
- 37:12the train, took in on the train. And then yeah, however long the
- 37:17pacer lasts via 406 hundred, whatever, and then it's going to
- 37:21be a race. But 100%, like his marketing
- 37:23team having a field day, he's 100% going to be doing a YouTube
- 37:26series leading up to this, guaranteed.
- 37:29Sure. He even posted he had a YouTube
- 37:33video lined up my workout pre gold medal, like he had a
- 37:37YouTube video filmed. He just needs to get the title
- 37:40for it. And then when he won gold, Oh
- 37:43yeah, this is the workout done before I won gold.
- 37:45Like it's a big definitely enough for big cash grab, but
- 37:49you cannot knock it. It's going to be so good in the
- 37:51build up. He was actually good over that
- 37:56weekend on Instagram, to be fair, like obviously didn't know
- 38:00who's going to win gold, but he was doing like, well, 20
- 38:03different stories, what he was eating in his little drills and
- 38:06strides, a shakeout. He's very open.
- 38:19But yeah, I think that's pretty much Murray plant then.
- 38:22I mean there was some sprints and stuff, but I'm not
- 38:25qualified. Yeah, true.
- 38:32Go on. So yeah, there was a women's
- 38:361500 and a few big names in this one were Claudia Hollingsworth,
- 38:42Georgia Bell, Sarah Billings, Lyndon Hall, Jayla Hancock,
- 38:46Cameron, a few Irish girls, Boy and a Dirty Girl.
- 38:50And yeah, from the off it was pretty tactical race and Claudia
- 38:57Holland's worth fair he she took it on Georgia hunt Bell tried to
- 39:00get her coming down the home straight, but she just didn't
- 39:02have the legs. And yeah, big scalp for Claudia
- 39:07and I think she sort of found her.
- 39:10I'd say she's a better 1500 girl than an 800 girl.
- 39:14So again, yeah, it's a good early signs for Claudia.
- 39:19So it'll be interesting to see how she goes because she'll
- 39:22definitely have a rematch with Georgia for the come games.
- 39:25And so this is only round one. But yeah, her like she's just so
- 39:29good. Her 800 sort of strength or
- 39:31speed really helps the 1500. And when you're being like
- 39:35George Hunter Bell, like she's up there.
- 39:38And fair enough, she did have the race and the travel in her
- 39:41life, so it would have taken taken a little bit out of her.
- 39:44But no, Claudia is just, yeah, she's up there with the best.
- 39:48And again, she's so, so young. Do you think a bit of a coaching
- 39:53masterstroke? It's like I wonder if there's
- 39:55anyone new over there having having any input.
- 40:01We need to ask him what he's bloody got to do and if she's on
- 40:04the on the double threshold or what, how he's got so strong for
- 40:07the 15. Yeah, he did say, and I'm sure
- 40:11Ben would have, might be saying, but he did just pass a comment
- 40:13that Claudia is extremely professional in all that she
- 40:17does. So unsurprising.
- 40:20And he did show me a sneak peek, you know, on a Monday night,
- 40:23like the neuromuscular stuff, like we would have a series of
- 40:27drills and things that we would do.
- 40:28And the guides do still here, like you see them, Ryan, like
- 40:32all the young kids when they rock up and head down to the
- 40:34park to do all work on their mechanics.
- 40:38He was, yeah, showing some of the stuff they do.
- 40:40And it's like that, but incredibly comprehensive.
- 40:43So it's cool to see the, oh, you know, all those little 1
- 40:48percenters. Paying dividends and to have the
- 40:52confidence to run it the way that she did, like knowing she's
- 40:55up against the world champion and to take it on.
- 41:00Yeah, yeah. You think some people would just
- 41:06be happy coming second, right? Not to have the mentality to
- 41:12fight for the win. Exactly what happened to the
- 41:17Irish girls. So Sophie O'Sullivan
- 41:21particularly is usually a bit more competitive.
- 41:24She. Just off the bat from the start,
- 41:26wasn't she? She was never really at the
- 41:27races and I think she had a pretty rough time recently with
- 41:30injuries. And like when you get a chance
- 41:32to run and like a goal, they will meet, you're going to take
- 41:34it. And but the doctor girl who came
- 41:37night like fair enough around 4:14.
- 41:39But the range on this one, she just ran New York there a couple
- 41:42of weeks ago. She came forth New York half,
- 41:46which was, yeah, it's pretty good.
- 41:50Again, nice little holiday all to Australia.
- 41:52You wouldn't say no, but yeah, just again, like it was such a
- 41:55good meet. There was such a good level of
- 41:57athletes in every single event. It's a shame.
- 41:59Like in the stream I was watching, they did go back and
- 42:03show the Men's Tree K, but they didn't show it live.
- 42:06So you already knew the results, which like still.
- 42:10And it's just savage to have like a race of that caliber,
- 42:14like only if it was in Perth. It's just that perks to
- 42:17Melbourne is a very, very long flight.
- 42:20But now, yeah, Callie. On the clip I've seen of the end
- 42:27of that 3K, you can like the crowd.
- 42:30Separately, the crowd looked on rail.
- 42:31To be fair, the stand was packed on the fence.
- 42:34They were about 5D, and everyone's like, going mad as
- 42:38Seth's coming up the straight. And then you can't, like, with
- 42:42the naked eye immediately from every angle, at least tell who
- 42:46actually got it because it was that close.
- 42:48So like it goes from yeah, yeah, yeah to like, oh, and then like,
- 42:53everyone's kind of like looking around for the actual official
- 42:56results. Yeah, it did look like, look
- 43:01like people got their money's worth from going down to an
- 43:03athletic spanked in there, which is cool.
- 43:06Like that's, you know, it wasn't that long ago where those sorts
- 43:13of mates were poorly attended. The atmosphere wasn't there, the
- 43:16facilities weren't set up to cater for people coming down.
- 43:19So yeah, good, good, good state of athletics.
- 43:25And perhaps, I don't know, see what you guys think, but maybe
- 43:28an observation is, you know, like the the reach, the the
- 43:31other mates that they have, the broader series.
- 43:33Is it worth having that that full continental suite?
- 43:36Or is it better just to have one or two less?
- 43:41But really try and invest in the the ones that they do do.
- 43:44And I don't know how they make them more more special, but you
- 43:48know, like that Zatopec mate seems to be an exceptional mate.
- 43:52The Morrow plant mate does very well.
- 43:54Like if they somehow get some sort of key sponsor for each one
- 43:58and there's one or two more, maybe that's because this is
- 44:02just like a so exceptionally better, isn't it?
- 44:08It is clear standards and yeah, like was it Perth, Hobart and
- 44:13Adelaide they've had this year, which maybe have been a little
- 44:17underwhelming, not in comparison because you can't compare, but
- 44:22even but you can to their own expectations.
- 44:27But even say compared to Perth mate versus what the atmosphere
- 44:30was like for Nationals in April last year.
- 44:34But I think you're comparing like a Premier League game to
- 44:37like a League 2 game. Like there is a golf like that
- 44:40Murray plant meet, there is a goal label, you're going to get
- 44:43the big names, there's big money in it.
- 44:44Whereas the person, I think it's a challenger or something like
- 44:46that, like it is meant for the lower level athlete.
- 44:50And I think in my opinion, I think it's very good that
- 44:53they're in because it brings people to Perth, it brings
- 44:56people all around Australia and it's just it's hard to get the
- 44:59level of athletes there the whole time.
- 45:01Like who was there? There was a really good, she's
- 45:05possibly Puma. She was nearly at every single
- 45:07one of them. Was it Linda?
- 45:07No, it wasn't Linden Hall. There was someone else and I
- 45:13forgot her name. She's nearly all them.
- 45:18But. Cameron, she's always.
- 45:20No. She's 100.
- 45:22Girl called off. I'll be Caldwell, she done
- 45:29literally all the except I don't know why she wasn't here.
- 45:32She only got injured or something for like.
- 45:35I think it is really good to have all them athletes coming
- 45:38around to different parts of Australia and it's just you're
- 45:41never going to get everyone at these events.
- 45:46Should we mention that? The smaller ones that gets.
- 45:54The Paul Vault. She's back Nina, Nina back in
- 46:00action. She won the Paul vault.
- 46:03Great results. Back with a bang.
- 46:08Have to support my friendship. Should we do the discus whilst
- 46:10you're on it? Yeah, I thought you were going
- 46:11to talk about Gaga in the 200, but.
- 46:15He didn't win either, did he? No, he didn't.
- 46:21Yeah, yeah, the little ego check.
- 46:26Yeah, it's good. It's good, that sort of stuff.
- 46:28Not not to say it's got an ego, but it's good to say that
- 46:30there's a good domestic color. But I think they're lucky.
- 46:33Kennedy Didn't he win a World Indoor 60m pedal?
- 46:38Oh yeah, did did he win gold? I thought maybe he just got
- 46:42pipped and got silver, but he's pretty classy, so I feel like
- 46:48it's probably good for someone like Gout's development.
- 46:51Young kid, you don't get too carried away if you're not
- 46:54winning. Yeah, and it's half of it isn't
- 46:57even Gout himself, It's the. No, it's just.
- 47:01The general media and whatever, yeah, the reputation that.
- 47:04Exactly. So it's dampens everyone's
- 47:06expectations on him, allows him hopefully just to focus on
- 47:10getting better. He's a world indoor silver
- 47:13medalist. Lachlan Kennedy, Yeah.
- 47:15Yeah. So pretty pretty reasonable,
- 47:19albeit that he was running triple the distance.
- 47:23Yeah. So that's done.
- 47:27Bell in half, next on the agenda.
- 47:31Yeah, there was a good live stream for this one, as is often
- 47:36the case with a lot of these European races, don't you think?
- 47:39Like mainly in Europe perhaps. I mean, London's done well and
- 47:44some of these races have some good strains to it, but there's
- 47:48a lot of these these top tier European races that have a great
- 47:55a great stream. And it's some of those classic
- 47:58British commentators that are are calling the shots, which
- 48:03which is always familiar voices that have a background in
- 48:07running, which makes following the events a lot of fun.
- 48:13Did you guys catch any of this race and or see the finish in
- 48:17particular? No, I haven't but see the
- 48:21results. I'll paint a picture.
- 48:24I've seen the finish and it pissed me off so much.
- 48:27So, so, so this is what happened right?
- 48:29So there was 22 pace groups. One was set for about maybe 5830
- 48:40pace and then one was set for about 5915 pace thereabouts.
- 48:45And you the paces are setting up the race for for the 2 fields.
- 48:52The German record holder had one.
- 48:54It's like a pacer for himself. Yes, that was 1A German record
- 48:58or something like that. Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 49:01And so although there was some comments ahead of the race
- 49:05saying he was going to take on Armstrong's record and the
- 49:08commentators seemed to the the commentators in my from what I
- 49:12caught, didn't seem to be completely across what was what
- 49:15he was shooting for other than to say he's looking like he's in
- 49:17trouble because he so Petros, who was the German favorite and
- 49:23the you see the reigning world marathon champion.
- 49:27He he was he fell off the back of the Packer back of the second
- 49:33group. But the pacemaker that was set
- 49:36up for him set like was would go with him.
- 49:38Talking to him was making sure he was OK.
- 49:43But and then he was more or less oscillating off the back of that
- 49:46second group. There was a league group of what
- 49:48whittled down after the pacemakers to three at the front
- 49:52and then there was some long stretches.
- 49:53Because this is this Berlin half Marathon, I think it must run
- 49:56similar route to the Berlin Marathon, but it's a very well
- 50:00manicured type course. It looked a bit breezy but
- 50:05otherwise looked like the weather looked pretty good.
- 50:09The top three were running. It's got the longest finish
- 50:14straight in like running races. I think the fingers finishing
- 50:17straight it's like 2.5 K of just straight Rd.
- 50:20Yeah, and, and even leading up to that, they did one U-turn
- 50:24before that as well. Like, and otherwise it was like
- 50:26some pretty straight going as well.
- 50:28Like it looks, it looks made for for running fast and the times
- 50:33reflected that. And so the lead group of three
- 50:36ended up dropping down to two. One of the one of the one of the
- 50:40guys who was one of the favourites just stepped off,
- 50:43looked like he was grabbing at his calf perhaps.
- 50:46But you could see this on this long stretch of Rd.
- 50:48Petros had maybe reformed with his pacemakers help onto that
- 50:52chase group and he was more or less working with this chase
- 50:55group. And then the pacemaker just
- 50:58decided to, he was like talking to Petros and then talking with
- 51:01the guys, but looked very comfortable.
- 51:03He then bridged the gap up to the top 2 and as he's bridging
- 51:08the gap, the the guy that was leading Kiptu ended up running
- 51:14away from yeah, stretching a gap on on the other person that was
- 51:21there and basically gapped him and was making his making his
- 51:28bid for the finish. And then the pacemaker ends up
- 51:31running up to running up to Kip 2 and then it and is looking
- 51:37ridiculously comfortable. He's got pace written over his
- 51:39bib, and then he turn. He turns to.
- 51:42Lindsay without Petrus, he's just runs up.
- 51:45Petrus is still with the second group at this point.
- 51:48He's just free. He's just free styling.
- 51:50The the guys are running like 250 odd K pace and this guy's
- 51:54picked it up and then this guy's bridging the gap turns to him,
- 51:57starts talking to him. He's smiling and this is about
- 52:011819 KS at 20 KS. He knuckles him, you know like a
- 52:06little fist pump and then he's talking to it and then proceeds
- 52:10to basically just slow down just enough runs side by side with
- 52:13him the whole way the butt the pace bikes feel.
- 52:16I feel like come up and try and say some things at one point in
- 52:19time, but then this guy's just still smiling the whole way.
- 52:22These guys are running like, like for for context, the, the
- 52:26people, the finishers in 3rd and 5th ranked national records and
- 52:31this guy's just fist pumping. The guy that's about to win
- 52:34steps behind him and then they get the same finish time.
- 52:36But the the guy that he Andre Kittu is awarded the win and
- 52:42Dennis Kip Kemoy, who was the pacemaker, yeah, is awarded, is
- 52:48awarded second with the same time.
- 52:49But bizarre. What the hell?
- 52:54So looking at the results, you would never know that guy was a
- 52:56pacer. And you would never think that
- 52:58he was a bloody pacer either. Like you'd think it was one of
- 53:00those ones right on the line again.
- 53:03They couldn't even. Commentators weren't even sure
- 53:05which of the two paces he was so much.
- 53:08In, the pacer accidentally crossed the line first.
- 53:11But he could have, he could have shitted in like he looked fitter
- 53:14than the bloke that one. But he yeah, it was absolutely
- 53:19phenomenal. So with the.
- 53:22Just on them time, so that's 5911 is the winning time and the
- 53:27pacemakers time. So Jack Rayner just ran the
- 53:31Aussie record in what, 5953 or something?
- 53:35Yeah. So he's just moonwalked 40
- 53:39seconds faster than it. Yeah.
- 53:42The British record sits in between them and the US record
- 53:46that just looked kind of man's 5950, and so he's run faster
- 53:50than so many national records. Yeah, and he was just, they're
- 53:54just doing a tow and then decided to pick it up because he
- 53:57was feeling good, like Petros ran a national record.
- 54:01He was stoked. He finished third that Dominic
- 54:05Labalu, I think he's Swiss, but I'm pretty sure.
- 54:09I don't know, has there was talk of that being a Swiss record,
- 54:12but I'm sure. Oh, what's his name?
- 54:15Julian Wanders is Swiss and has run quicker.
- 54:18I think he's run like 5913, so I don't know about that, but I
- 54:22know that. Yeah, that Etienne, is it too
- 54:26good, too good knee? That was, that was I think a
- 54:29French national record. There was a couple of French
- 54:32Frenchmen that were running, yeah, Bastion, Augusto.
- 54:35So they ran 5927 and 6009 respectively.
- 54:42They were, they were very competitive, like deep field,
- 54:47very impressive the the the degree depth in that race.
- 54:52But yeah, just that whole exchange and I think the
- 54:54commentator made a good point like with the pacemaker being up
- 54:58there in the win at the win, like, I don't know, it's true.
- 55:04It's difficult. Should a pacemaker be allowed to
- 55:06win? I don't know, like because if
- 55:09you've got a pace written on your bib and you assume then
- 55:12don't you as a racer that you don't have to contest with them
- 55:16And so then your strategy on how to win does not factor in that
- 55:20person. Would you agree?
- 55:21So therefore it's a bit misleading to come in and say
- 55:25you're pacemaking these people, then throw down their moves to
- 55:27try and beat the people they think they need to beat, and
- 55:30then you run over the top of them.
- 55:31Albeit that someone else could get to point A to point from
- 55:36point A to point B quicker than you feels feels deceptive.
- 55:41Yeah, I agree. And particularly pre race as
- 55:44well. Like if you're one of the top
- 55:47athletes in the race and you're trying to figure out how you can
- 55:49beat everyone else and this isn't a case of just running
- 55:52faster than them because you're all as fast and as fast as each
- 55:56other and tactics and strategy come into it.
- 55:59So if you're not concerned about the pacemaker at all, then yeah,
- 56:05it affects your decision making massively.
- 56:07Before the race, you conversations with your coach.
- 56:11Have you guys looked at his World Athletics profile?
- 56:16Who is he's agent? No, it doesn't show his.
- 56:19Isn't he literally you're going to 2024 nothing, 2025 results
- 56:25nothing, 2026 results, that one. So you're saying buy a stock
- 56:32now? Future world record holder?
- 56:34More talent. You can buy your stock firm to
- 56:37win or buy them stuff to get something else for him.
- 56:41I yeah, I don't know about this kid.
- 56:44Like the way he fist bumped and he was just so chill.
- 56:47He yeah, the fist bump was something else, wasn't it?
- 56:52Yeah, like fuck no. Like that is just a pace take.
- 56:58And do you see look, so the guy the guy was so I would yeah, you
- 57:02dropped out just as I was giving sharing some of the recaps.
- 57:06But like when this like keep 2's making his move right to drop.
- 57:11Was he dropping Labalu? Was Labalu running in the lead
- 57:14pack in the lead 3 on or did he come?
- 57:17And so he's made this move to drop him and he's dropping sub
- 57:20250 KS. And the commentators are talking
- 57:22about these are the fastest KS the race or the fastest KS like
- 57:26this is his decisive move and they all might keep chemo is
- 57:29just like, I'll just bridge on up and have a chat to you.
- 57:34He made-up so much ground, like the cross was moving.
- 57:38He was. Surgery, Yeah.
- 57:39And your man kept chemo. Just look at kicks even harder.
- 57:44Yeah, Knuckle touches your man and is chilling.
- 57:47Nah. Yeah, good.
- 57:48Luck get lost yeah, he hasn't even got an agent on world off
- 57:52letter No, no. Not yet, nowhere.
- 57:55Like how the fuck do you even get a pacing job of doing this?
- 57:58Like who is he? What kit do they are on brand?
- 58:02Do you always a Puma? Was it?
- 58:07I don't know, I just don't like it at all.
- 58:11You wonder if they're subject the same regulations as the rest
- 58:16of the athletes. What?
- 58:20What you mean? Will that be tested after the
- 58:23race? Surely but like it's selective.
- 58:27I done the national indoors and a lad it was one place ahead of
- 58:31me got tested. It's totally spot random like
- 58:37the. But yeah, but yeah, now it is.
- 58:41But, but do you avoid? Do you avoid that if you're a?
- 58:47No. Surely he's on the list if he's
- 58:49running even though you don't know what results.
- 58:50But he's not even. He's not even got a profile.
- 58:53Yeah, but like, you know, like I don't get how you get this gig
- 58:56of pacing the German record if you've no history.
- 59:02It like it doesn't make sense. Berlin, Martin, is that?
- 59:07Yeah, well, no. Did you find his was his World
- 59:13Athletics profile? Did it have this race in it?
- 59:16Yes, that's how I found him. Then yeah.
- 59:20Yeah. Well, in terms of 50. 911 he ran
- 59:305911, Yeah. Yeah, quicker than the American
- 59:33record, quicker than the Aussie. They Yeah, quicker than the
- 59:38bloke that just won the world gold for the marathon.
- 59:43So yeah, pretty impressive, pretty impressive pacing job.
- 59:47Arguably the best pacing job ever.
- 59:50Best debut pacing job ever? Probably.
- 59:53Oh, he might have another one here, boys.
- 59:55He might actually have two. There's 2 Dennis Keep Chemoys
- 1:00:00and he actually might have two. Yeah, with the other one.
- 1:00:05Is that with one end, Denny and Dennis?
- 1:00:12Oh yeah, I didn't actually know. It's not.
- 1:00:16But I mean still could be the same guy.
- 1:00:19Yeah. While you look at that, just
- 1:00:22notice. This is different value.
- 1:00:24He ran 1/2 marathon on the 21st of March and he ran 67-O2.
- 1:00:30He's gone quick, quick. Yeah.
- 1:00:39Other notice notable performances.
- 1:00:42We obviously had London callings Jake Smith in the field and did
- 1:00:48you see on his Instagram he posted that his plan of attack
- 1:00:51was, I think he mentioned no taper.
- 1:00:56Was it shoot for around just sub 63 was the plan and hopefully he
- 1:01:00can run a bit stronger in the second-half than the first.
- 1:01:02So it sounds like a controlled effort.
- 1:01:05I did see on one of the guys that was racing their Instagram
- 1:01:09page that they shout they were gave a shout out to Jake for
- 1:01:13doing a lot of work into the wind.
- 1:01:15So he obviously was. Yeah.
- 1:01:17So he must have been helping a few guys out and it's it, it
- 1:01:23looked as though, did you see him finish?
- 1:01:24I saw him finish and looked like he finished very well.
- 1:01:26So he must have been in control from how it looked.
- 1:01:33Yeah, he seems to have been buzzing with it.
- 1:01:35Like comfy. 62 was like 62. Oh, something in the end, given
- 1:01:43a little fast. Yeah.
- 1:01:44Yeah, I think so, yeah. Shivers.
- 1:01:51And yeah, he's, he's good on Instagram.
- 1:01:53He always puts like about 10 stories from each race or even
- 1:01:57each session, but he's very open with it all.
- 1:02:01I think he's he's even said like he was talking throughout and he
- 1:02:04was having a laugh and stuff. So shows how comfortable it was.
- 1:02:08Which I do think, like I always thought that threshold pace is
- 1:02:14our pace. It's what you mean to maintain
- 1:02:16for an hour. And our effort, I thought was
- 1:02:20around that 4:00-ish millimole. And you do know you're working
- 1:02:24hard, but you're not completely exhausted to that pace.
- 1:02:27So I think that's always a good sign.
- 1:02:29Like, I remember when I heard Jimmy Wheelan talk about his
- 1:02:32race, race recap of the was it the Valencia half that he did?
- 1:02:39Yeah. And him talking about how
- 1:02:41comfortable that felt. But I think that's how it's
- 1:02:43meant to feel which. 3 millimol apparently, by the way.
- 1:02:49Is there? PT or.
- 1:02:52No. Are you talking about our chat
- 1:02:54on Friday night? Yeah, we'll see.
- 1:02:57Yeah, TVC again. On that, on that hour thing.
- 1:03:03So. Obviously if you're.
- 1:03:05If it's an hour's efforts, it's going to feel pretty easy for a
- 1:03:09long period of that hour. So typically, if you were to
- 1:03:14race 1/2 marathon, at what point would you start getting
- 1:03:19uncomfortable? And then hair.
- 1:03:20And if you were to be able to be in control of measuring it out,
- 1:03:24all right. Well, just personally, I always
- 1:03:27find that window between 40 and 45 minutes the hardest.
- 1:03:32Like you normally 1st 5K, hopefully if it's going to plan,
- 1:03:36should feel alright. 10K starts to get hard, then that 14 to 16
- 1:03:41K is the worst bit. And then once you've been
- 1:03:44inside, yeah. And then it's that last at some
- 1:03:47point you can start to wheel yourself home, but that's that.
- 1:03:50At like 40 minutes you're like fuck, I saw it a lot of running.
- 1:03:56Speaking of not having a great day, do you see Jimmy Wheelan
- 1:03:59ran 60? So he was, I was, I think
- 1:04:02everyone was a bit excited giving given how well he coped
- 1:04:05with that pacing job, running 3 minute K pace for 25 KS, which
- 1:04:11is 65. He pays 63 minute pace for 25 KS
- 1:04:17of the Barcelona marathon recently.
- 1:04:21So the question was, and he's run 61 minutes already.
- 1:04:24So I think the natural question was how much quicker can he go
- 1:04:27than his previous PV and what will that look like?
- 1:04:32And he ran 65 O 4, so didn't have the day he was hoping to
- 1:04:36have. And yeah, so he splits.
- 1:04:40It looked like he went through 10K and around that sort of 29
- 1:04:43minute pace. Yeah, 29 minutes for 10K, which
- 1:04:47would be about 61 flat pace, but it looked it.
- 1:04:52Yeah. Obviously didn't go to plan.
- 1:04:54He said he'll recap it. I think maybe I'll need one of
- 1:04:56his videos. So watch that.
- 1:04:58Let's watch this space. Yeah, he's going with the the
- 1:05:03Jake Barcliffe approach and keeping his cards close to his
- 1:05:06chest so that everyone tunes in to the recap on YouTube.
- 1:05:09Yeah. Good marketing.
- 1:05:11So then when I seen his story like that, I thought I'll just
- 1:05:15go and have a look at his Strava, then see how his splits
- 1:05:17went. No, I didn't put it there.
- 1:05:19He hasn't even put his run up. But in the if you go into the
- 1:05:23results page in the like the tracker, you can find his 5K
- 1:05:27splits. I think it was something like
- 1:05:291420 something 14401520. And then the last one was like
- 1:05:36could have been 17 minutes. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:42So yeah, clearly didn't go to plan.
- 1:05:46No good Rica. The women's race, it's hard.
- 1:05:54It was harder to follow the women's race, so obviously
- 1:05:56cutting into the race the and they they'd spent their time
- 1:06:02cutting between the Ester Pfeiffer from Germany, who was
- 1:06:07the German favorite, and the top three.
- 1:06:12So in the results, the winners were very, very fast.
- 1:06:18So Lakina Amebel Amebel from Ethiopia was first in 6507.
- 1:06:28I'll just say Gerono and Loli Lolio were second or third from
- 1:06:34Kenya in 6521 and 6535. So the top three were all close
- 1:06:43for a lot of that race. So obviously mixed in, I think,
- 1:06:45with a lot of the men. But yeah.
- 1:06:49And Esther Pfeiffer, I think ran, I think that puts her
- 1:06:53third. So she was the German, it was
- 1:06:55German national championships and she was the the first German
- 1:06:59home 5th over the line and that was puts her number three I
- 1:07:03think all time. Do you remember is it Kosta,
- 1:07:07Kosta House and Kosta Construction?
- 1:07:10I'm going to get her name wrong, but there was a German, this
- 1:07:16might have been before you from a few years ago.
- 1:07:19She was top German runner that ran a fast half marathon.
- 1:07:22There's a there's a couple that have run quicker but.
- 1:07:25She must be the wife of Does Hemrick Pfeiffer ring a bell to
- 1:07:29you? Yeah, and I think was he doing
- 1:07:31some of the pacing work? Would that be right?
- 1:07:33Maybe, Yeah, I think I saw that in the some of the the footage
- 1:07:38that was clipped. That's a a running power couple
- 1:07:42if you've ever seen one in it because I'm just he's run 6128
- 1:07:46as well, so. Yeah, I think he helped her
- 1:07:49throw that because she sort of collapsed over the line into
- 1:07:51into someone. And that presumably was him for
- 1:07:56context, right? Because I was looking at this,
- 1:08:00the top 17 women were all under 70 minutes.
- 1:08:05And that's the Valencia half marathon, which I think we often
- 1:08:09associate with maybe the deepest half marathon in the world. 15
- 1:08:14women broke 70 minutes in that last year.
- 1:08:17So I think that's like that's some pretty solid depth.
- 1:08:22And you had some pretty good European representation.
- 1:08:26Like a Rwandan athlete was fourth, who obviously had German
- 1:08:315th. Belgium, Spain, Italy, France,
- 1:08:36all all represented, all those countries represented.
- 1:08:40So looked like a very like a good event to be part of.
- 1:08:44It'd be interesting to hear what Jake says about it in his recap.
- 1:08:51Yeah, oh to oh, to live in Europe and just have such access
- 1:08:55to these races. Not bad, is it?
- 1:08:58Be easier to get to that from the UK than it would to go to
- 1:09:01Melbourne from here. Scary to think, particularly
- 1:09:07with the price of fuel here. Well, Speaking of which, on the
- 1:09:12been on the news before the pun, bringing in a car, it's getting
- 1:09:16that expensive coming down by 26 PA litre.
- 1:09:19You wouldn't know though. Well, I only know it because
- 1:09:23it's tax jargon. But yeah, there is fuel excise
- 1:09:26cuts. But yes, as a there is talk
- 1:09:30about in some sort of charge, tax charge on EVs now, which I
- 1:09:36think can seems unnecessary. We're trying to promote promote
- 1:09:41grain, aren't we? So you try and make a good
- 1:09:45change for the environment and then everyone else gets shafted
- 1:09:48and then they come to use a foot there.
- 1:09:50Bill, what's unbelievable, $3 a litre, The diesel, is it more
- 1:09:58than? Yeah, not shape at the minute,
- 1:10:00but yeah, no, I wouldn't know, but.
- 1:10:04All the young fellas won't be ragging the utes around anymore.
- 1:10:08All the more reason to run to work, run to tell people get on
- 1:10:14the bike. Economical commute.
- 1:10:16That's right. Funny.
- 1:10:18Actually on the weekend, we're going out for dinner and we're
- 1:10:22like at a set of traffic lights and this car, the lights are on
- 1:10:27red and then they tend to green. And he was 10 and left like
- 1:10:30immediately as soon as they tend to green.
- 1:10:33He's gone from a standing start to fully just drifted round the
- 1:10:37corner like 1000. What is?
- 1:10:40What is the measurement on the Rev whatever it is like?
- 1:10:43Yeah, yeah. Revs.
- 1:10:45Yeah, yeah, literally the back end, like, swung round like, and
- 1:10:50the way the back wheels are spinning.
- 1:10:52He's put treadmarks into the road.
- 1:10:55And then you couldn't race it because sat at the red light on
- 1:10:59the same junction was a police car.
- 1:11:02And he just flew through his lights on, like, mounted the
- 1:11:07central reservation because he was in like, one of those utes
- 1:11:09ones and just pulled them over right there.
- 1:11:12And I was just like, you've never seen a finer example of
- 1:11:16instant karma before my life. Love it I you say that was a bit
- 1:11:21like Kimmy Antonelli and the Mercedes on the weekend.
- 1:11:26Yeah, what's he up to? Japanese is a shout for the
- 1:11:29championship. I.
- 1:11:30Don't know, but you say they had a bit of wheel spin to begin
- 1:11:33with. Yeah.
- 1:11:35And so I was getting a bit excited there, thought maybe
- 1:11:37Oscar was going to go from DNS ING to winning, but.
- 1:11:42Safety card Dunham. Safety card didn't dirty I
- 1:11:45reckon but I don't know, he's got more pace doesn't he then
- 1:11:50then his team mate. Does.
- 1:11:52What they say when we're not bad, when we, when we can make
- 1:11:56the start line. Oh, Oscar did.
- 1:11:58Yeah. You know, it's good, Yeah.
- 1:12:03Anyway. Some more results last ones
- 1:12:0510,000 meters in the USA the sound running 10K, which is
- 1:12:09often where people go to run fast chase standards because
- 1:12:1310,000 meters is probably like the the event or the discipline
- 1:12:17with the the fewest opportunities such a long way to
- 1:12:20run on the track that you need people around with you and the
- 1:12:25times that people are running worldwide they're not all always
- 1:12:29in the same place at once to do that.
- 1:12:32The women's race was won by, I won't quote from last week.
- 1:12:36If you know what he said, then you listened.
- 1:12:38Shelby Houlihan in 3050 from Jess McLean of Brooks.
- 1:12:44Shelby Houlihan's still unattached there.
- 1:12:46It's interesting. She gets a gig on the start line
- 1:12:50in all these races, but the brands are still, they won't
- 1:12:53pick her up. Jess MacLean, 3150 in second.
- 1:13:00And to be honest, that's the only, only other name I know in
- 1:13:03that women's field. Sarah Aston from Team Macau was
- 1:13:06in the B race. She DNF.
- 1:13:08And it seems like Team Macau in general had a bit of a tough day
- 1:13:11out. The men's race, Mohammed
- 1:13:16Abdulashi sub 27 minutes for the win, Nike athlete 2656 and then
- 1:13:23Australia's very own Kai Robinson, OAC 2657.
- 1:13:28First ever Australian man to breach the 27 minute barrier.
- 1:13:33National record. I'd say surprised not very many
- 1:13:38people given what he's been doing the past year or two.
- 1:13:42Unbelievable. Yeah, he seemed pretty happy.
- 1:13:47And I mean, you, you remember previewing some of this race and
- 1:13:50we were talking about is it Gulveer Singh after his
- 1:13:54impressive performance on the on the road in the half marathon at
- 1:14:00New York. And so and then we all, we
- 1:14:04obviously mentioned Woody Kincaid because he's run, he's
- 1:14:08got one of the quick, one of the quickest seed times.
- 1:14:10But we more or less thought Kyle Robinson would be within a
- 1:14:13chance given his 4th place at the recent 5K outdoor is run
- 1:14:21under 13 minutes, which you know when we sometimes do that
- 1:14:24comparison of double plus a minute, you're running 13 odd
- 1:14:27minutes times. 2 is 26 + 1 is 27 flat.
- 1:14:31So he but a lot of the Aussies like it wasn't that long ago
- 1:14:35where 2720 was about the where the Australian record was at.
- 1:14:39Like during COVID, that's what the likes of Pat Tian and Stewie
- 1:14:43mixed Wayne were running where they were breaking each other's
- 1:14:47national record. So to yeah, to take that below
- 1:14:5127 minutes is pretty, is pretty special.
- 1:14:55Yeah, so he takes Rayner's record off him.
- 1:14:57It was 2709 maybe. I think so.
- 1:15:01I think it was around that. Little chunk off.
- 1:15:03Yeah, he has. And was that in the same mate,
- 1:15:05was it? I mean, it was one of the
- 1:15:07American mates that Jack travelled over and ran.
- 1:15:11It's one of these highly coveted the place to go and run a fast
- 1:15:15time. Yeah, Jack, I'll be looking back
- 1:15:19thinking of Fuck I've just If he would have had an entry for this
- 1:15:26race in America, you dare say he would have been a fair chance at
- 1:15:29defending his record against Sky, given his recent half
- 1:15:33marathon national record as well.
- 1:15:35I mean, you say that, but look at look at how it played out in
- 1:15:39the 3K. Yeah.
- 1:15:44But yes, I mean, I in terms of his, his, his fit as well.
- 1:15:48So no, you're being unfair to him.
- 1:15:51But yeah. Mike Foppin, Dutch guy, he's
- 1:15:55been 1500 metre 5K guy stepping up 10 K 2720 finished third
- 1:16:01beating Woody Kincaid. Yeah, that's cool.
- 1:16:05And then, yeah, the Hawker boys were spread throughout.
- 1:16:08So Scott Beatty, well, the team, the Cowboys, he was the highest
- 1:16:13finisher for them. 2723 shit's pretty fast.
- 1:16:18I think maybe we, I think last weekend we we would have said he
- 1:16:22was the the best pick of them. It's interesting, right, because
- 1:16:28remember we're having this chat and we're trying to and you're
- 1:16:30mentioning is Joe Wickfield the. He's been keeping their
- 1:16:35receipts. No, look, I'm, I'm probably
- 1:16:39warming to the idea, to be fair. Like, I mean, 27, what did he
- 1:16:43run 2738 on the road? And this is in a pretty neatly
- 1:16:48manicured track race. You're talking 15 seconds, like
- 1:16:531 1/2 seconds a kilometre. I don't know.
- 1:16:56I mean, you, it's you'd. It'd be unfair to say it's not
- 1:17:00in the conversation, right? Yeah, and the guy who finished
- 1:17:039th, he's British guy as well. David Malarkey, unattached.
- 1:17:09Surely he won't go without a sponsor for too long. 2726 he
- 1:17:15beat Australia's Brett Robinson, travelled over short trip in and
- 1:17:19out. 2810, Reckon he was looking for a bit more than that.
- 1:17:23I think he talked about maybe running the PB, which is 2751.
- 1:17:29But Brett's been doing a bit of a track season now and that's
- 1:17:33what like his fourth race in quick succession potentially and
- 1:17:38a lot of travel as well. Like he flew to Japan quickly
- 1:17:41for 1/2 marathon, back to Australia, flew to the US.
- 1:17:46So I mean, it's, it's hardly a terrible run.
- 1:17:49It's definitely a pass. Yeah, I mean 2 seconds, OK, it's
- 1:17:53not, you know, you're in the ballpark if you best ever
- 1:17:56fitness and you know, his best ever fitness was good enough for
- 1:17:58sub 60 half marathon, which then trans has translated into, you
- 1:18:05know, multiple sub 210 marathon. So it's exciting, I think.
- 1:18:12That's a wrap on the results, an hour and bloody, however long
- 1:18:16into the absurd takes us to training weeks.
- 1:18:21I'm keen to hear how your week has been.
- 1:18:24Yeah, OK. The training weeks are powered
- 1:18:30by Gnomeo, which is the performance supplement trusted
- 1:18:34by Andres Elmgren called Hocker, Connor months and maybe I don't
- 1:18:39know about recently past couple of months, Izzy back Doyle has
- 1:18:43picked them up too and many more.
- 1:18:45So as per no Muse motto, drink no Mio and prepare to
- 1:18:50outperform. That's if you can get your hands
- 1:18:53on it, that is. Yeah, It is proving more and
- 1:18:57more hard to come by. We're very lucky that we've got
- 1:19:00a little inventory of it at home, which we do a.
- 1:19:03Stash in my wine fridge I. Appreciate you keeping it
- 1:19:06chilled for me at the right temperature.
- 1:19:09I I've been taking you well, I've been taking.
- 1:19:13Will you get up in time to take it tomorrow?
- 1:19:16Is the question. I'll be up in time more so if I
- 1:19:19remember, but which I should remember.
- 1:19:21I've taken it two out of the three sessions that we've done.
- 1:19:24I put it next to my condiments in the fridge so I don't forget.
- 1:19:27Same time I'm having a slice of toast and a coffee and.
- 1:19:33I know you're, you're big on this because we were kind of
- 1:19:37theorizing whether it's worth taking it like whilst we're not
- 1:19:42exactly looking to peak perform, but whilst we're just on this
- 1:19:46trajectory of like getting fitter and better and stronger
- 1:19:49anyway, is it worthwhile then using an Omnia to fuel these
- 1:19:53sessions? But with the talk of the like
- 1:19:56reduced oxidative stress and like the enhanced recovery don't
- 1:20:00need. So figure that's good enough
- 1:20:02reason. That's what's getting me over
- 1:20:04the line with it. I need to, I need to recover.
- 1:20:07So which, yeah, I mean, the last comment on Gnomeo before I lead
- 1:20:13into my training, we can talk about the need to recover.
- 1:20:16But I did see, did you see Ben Felton?
- 1:20:19I was watching the live stream and thought she was, is that Ben
- 1:20:21Felton crossing, crossing the line?
- 1:20:23You know, Ben is running and it was, he ran 6450 and he's tagged
- 1:20:29in Gnomeo and popped up on my feed and he's gone loss for word
- 1:20:386450 will take some time to sink in.
- 1:20:40And then he's put some broccoli emojis in there.
- 1:20:43So I think he's crediting some of his performance with the
- 1:20:52yeah, with the with the good juice.
- 1:20:53So good on him. And I'm assuming perhaps he's
- 1:20:56part of the team as well, or he's just a fan of the product.
- 1:21:00And my the DMS are going to be pretty busy aren't they?
- 1:21:04Of just like their their DMS probably looks like a World
- 1:21:08Athletics top 100 list or something.
- 1:21:11Yeah. Well, I mean, yeah, look, I
- 1:21:12think some of these products and things that are coming out now
- 1:21:16are, yeah, quite exciting. So it's good that people are are
- 1:21:20seeing benefit in it. In terms of my training week, so
- 1:21:26Monday very much the same as what most Mondays are, which is
- 1:21:31a commute into the office and then a commute to the gym.
- 1:21:35Did a lift, then Tuesday warmed up.
- 1:21:40With you, did you have your your weight lifting shoes on last
- 1:21:43week or? Here we go.
- 1:21:46You were, you were waiting for you.
- 1:21:49I didn't think. I thought maybe we dealt with
- 1:21:51this in the gym, but that's fine.
- 1:21:52We should. We can go into that.
- 1:21:56So yes, I have. So yeah, I've got a shout out to
- 1:22:03to Waisi, who is a listener of of the podcast who happens to be
- 1:22:06the same shoe size as me. And as I explained to you, Ryan,
- 1:22:10when I started out, we were the same weight Once Upon a time.
- 1:22:13And he's gone into CrossFit and powerlifting and I've gone down
- 1:22:17this running wormhole and he is called wind of me lifting at the
- 1:22:22gym in my super blast and suggested that perhaps it's not
- 1:22:27the smartest thing to do. And so he very kindly gave me a
- 1:22:30pair of his lifting shoes, which was noted by a few people in the
- 1:22:34gym, including yourself, Ryan, because they, I think they look
- 1:22:38all right. So the best way I can describe
- 1:22:42it to the listeners, if you, if you think of like the the power
- 1:22:45lifting competitions where it's like the strongman on the big
- 1:22:49wooden board with a bar with like 6 plates on the end.
- 1:22:53And the image I can get in my head is someone stood there with
- 1:22:56the bar like jacked over the head.
- 1:22:59Now that image you've created, just shift your eyes downwards
- 1:23:03and you get like the big wraps over the knees 1st.
- 1:23:07And then you come to the shoes and they're like the pretty much
- 1:23:11like a plank of wood underneath the force and you'll know
- 1:23:14exactly what type of shoe he was wearing.
- 1:23:17He wouldn't be doing his warm up in it.
- 1:23:20No, I was doing my box jumps in them so.
- 1:23:23Yeah, pretty stable for London. Yeah, not much explosion coming
- 1:23:27out the other side though, I'll tell you that.
- 1:23:30What's the firm in them? No, they they are, they are
- 1:23:34lifeless. They are.
- 1:23:36But importantly, they've got some sort of heel pitch in them
- 1:23:38that takes a bit of pressure off my Achilles, so I can't get into
- 1:23:42a deep squat and I'm lifting safer and better than ever.
- 1:23:47I'm getting some very good feedback.
- 1:23:49So yeah, if you needed to give him a try next week, I can leave
- 1:23:53him there for you no problem. I was waiting for the word
- 1:23:57heavier being used in the description as well.
- 1:23:59I'll allow you to say it. Well, yeah, because that's the
- 1:24:03thing. You I by the time you get in the
- 1:24:05gym, I've taken all the bars and put them on the rack.
- 1:24:07So you don't you don't appreciate the the need for for
- 1:24:12the shoes yet, but you'll get there.
- 1:24:14I'll get there one day. And the reason you were asking
- 1:24:17if I wore them last week was because you weren't there,
- 1:24:19right? Yeah, I pulled the sickie
- 1:24:25excuses. You said you went for a bite you
- 1:24:28wanted you prioritize the cardio.
- 1:24:31Oh, that's it. Offsets it with the endurance
- 1:24:33activities. But anyway, that leads us into
- 1:24:39Tuesday morning. So got through my non training
- 1:24:43day, but we did 4 by two KS. I'm trying to remember back to
- 1:24:50how this was set up. So had you in your mind decided
- 1:24:55to go more consent? What did Raff say?
- 1:24:58Oh right. And we had a bit of a lactate
- 1:24:59meter out. So we're trying to be sensible,
- 1:25:02weren't we? Trying to keep it not not go to
- 1:25:07get to gun home. Yeah, I think it was.
- 1:25:09It was 12 hours after we'd recorded where I remember
- 1:25:13sitting there on the record and saying like, I need to separate
- 1:25:16my training from your training and run my own sessions and my
- 1:25:20own paces. Next minute so I'll and Ralph
- 1:25:29had the lactate meter on me. So as he's running, as he's
- 1:25:32riding past me, he's like how you feel?
- 1:25:34I'm arse completely comfortable and then my lactates not telling
- 1:25:37the same story. So but it was close enough I
- 1:25:41think so I averaged 314 maybe for these.
- 1:25:48It was 4 by two KS with 90 seconds static recovery and then
- 1:25:53my lactate rating for them was about four, four to five
- 1:26:00millimol. So maybe slightly higher than
- 1:26:03what you want it to be, but everything felt fine.
- 1:26:05So ticked off a session note that I'm not doing like a
- 1:26:09double, it's not double threshold just yet.
- 1:26:11I'm not at the ability where my body can handle that.
- 1:26:14So perhaps if it was a little bit too hot, it's OK.
- 1:26:18And how about you had? 90 seconds standing was it?
- 1:26:22Yeah, just 90 seconds to I'm sure we weren't overshooting,
- 1:26:25but look, I enjoyed that we had Luke down with us who who
- 1:26:31blasted off the front and happened to have lower lactate
- 1:26:35so completely kissed. So that was a bit demoralizing,
- 1:26:38but we got through it. Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 1:26:42And that afternoon we, I went out for an easy 30 minute run
- 1:26:48Wednesday, just easy commutes. Thursday, the bike intervals,
- 1:26:57which was good fun. I thought.
- 1:26:58Ryan, did you enjoy, enjoy that? We did a, a sort of was a 20
- 1:27:02minute tempo into we, we essentially did.
- 1:27:07And now, and you would know this, you know, the 5.8 K loop
- 1:27:10in Kings Park. So we basically had, so we'd do
- 1:27:148 minutes at threshold on the bike and then you'd have
- 1:27:18two-minute float, which essentially gave us a, a, that
- 1:27:215.8 K loop. So we did that four times.
- 1:27:24So it was an hour of work on the bike in the morning, which is
- 1:27:27pretty good. And we timed it pretty well,
- 1:27:30Ryan, because some guy caught up to us in the after the first, we
- 1:27:33had to someone join us after about the first Rep.
- 1:27:37And so we spent most of the next three reps just sitting on their
- 1:27:40wheel, which was great. We.
- 1:27:42Had the rabbit, as the Americans would say.
- 1:27:45Most brilliant. But yeah, that was the morning
- 1:27:47threshold or bike interval workout.
- 1:27:50And then that afternoon I was down by the lake and we had the
- 1:27:555 minutes, 4 by 5 minutes at threshold, 2 minute float.
- 1:28:02So the threshold reps were around I think 313 pace.
- 1:28:08It's a similar pace to the 2K reps.
- 1:28:12And then the two minutes was about 330 pace I think, or 325
- 1:28:17pace. So the two-minute recovery and
- 1:28:21that felt hard. It was, I don't know if you
- 1:28:23remember the weather, but we were, there was a cyclone coming
- 1:28:26in due to potentially hitting Perth in the next day.
- 1:28:32And so it's just that weird, incredibly muggy but still quite
- 1:28:35warm tropical type weather Thursday night, but got
- 1:28:39something done. It was humid as anything I
- 1:28:42remember because I was toying with whether to go out Thursday
- 1:28:48evening as well and do like my, I was going to do a steady run
- 1:28:52or do I have a rest and do it on Friday.
- 1:28:56But I concluded rather than going like tough day, tough day,
- 1:29:01I just do both on the Thursday and then have a complete rest on
- 1:29:03the Friday. And I was trying to run steady
- 1:29:06heart rate, which I could get to the heart rate like 150 odds.
- 1:29:11But my pace was like 4 minutes and I felt in the bin like I was
- 1:29:16planning on doing half an hour straight and I had to split it
- 1:29:19up into two 15 minutes and even the 2nd 15 minute was just
- 1:29:22awful. So yeah, I think I was a bit
- 1:29:25overcooked from the morning maybe.
- 1:29:28Yeah. I mean, I've done a few of the
- 1:29:30like double workout days on the Thursday now and that felt
- 1:29:34particularly hard. Like I was 2 reps into these
- 1:29:38into four reps of these 5 minutes at threshold and I was
- 1:29:41like, I'm not it. This feels harder than normal.
- 1:29:46I think it's just particularly unpleasant the weather to be
- 1:29:48honest, and we're probably not used to it because it's starting
- 1:29:51to cool off here. It's not why you you took the
- 1:29:54float that easy. You know I push the floats,
- 1:29:59don't you? That's what it's about.
- 1:30:03Owen would remember that you push the floats as well.
- 1:30:05I imagine it must have been on the receiving end of a few tough
- 1:30:09sessions towards the back end. You just don't get a break.
- 1:30:14It's not a float, it's a steady. The heart rate doesn't come.
- 1:30:20Down I did it with with Andrew, the one of the guys who's new to
- 1:30:23the training group and he went to slow it right down.
- 1:30:27Sorry, Andrew. No, it's it's, no it.
- 1:30:29Doesn't work like that. This Dean's house you go by Dean
- 1:30:34Girls. That's right.
- 1:30:36And he had an extra Rep to do as well.
- 1:30:38So I just sort of tighten the screws on the No I didn't.
- 1:30:41But. No.
- 1:30:44And then Friday, yeah, 2 easy commutes.
- 1:30:48It was absolutely bucketing down on Friday.
- 1:30:50And I remember thinking that when, when you mentioned about
- 1:30:54January and it, this is like the first proper rain we've had in a
- 1:30:58while. And it was like it was proper
- 1:31:01rain. It was like, I don't know how
- 1:31:02many, how many mils was it over 10 mils of rain, but.
- 1:31:08I think, I think I prefer that, you know, because in Ireland it
- 1:31:10just rains constantly. But in Australia, like use get
- 1:31:13what we get in a week, probably in a couple of hours.
- 1:31:17Like when it rains, oh, it pours.
- 1:31:21Yeah. So this was proper like heavy,
- 1:31:25heavy rain, which was which took most of Friday, but then other
- 1:31:30than that, like it wasn't too bad.
- 1:31:33So yeah, on Saturday we had a workout.
- 1:31:35Did you say you commuted in now in that rain?
- 1:31:38I did. I was one of the only people on
- 1:31:40the path. I felt sorry for myself
- 1:31:43commuting like 10 yards from the office to Woolies and to get
- 1:31:47sushi. I took, I took a spare change of
- 1:31:52clothes to put dry clothes on to run home, albeit you step
- 1:31:54straight out into, but I don't know what felt nice.
- 1:31:59The idea of putting wet clothes on to get to commute home.
- 1:32:02It's gross. And then Saturday we had, you
- 1:32:08know, the old Kenyan fart like Owen.
- 1:32:10We had that down at Lake Munger. So normally I'd be on the bike
- 1:32:14doing my longer ride, but again, because there was this cyclone
- 1:32:17due to hit Perth and no one was sure how terrible the weather
- 1:32:22would be, We decided not to ride and the roads were pretty wet
- 1:32:26anyway. So I think it was a good
- 1:32:27decision and we, I went down to the session at Lake Munga and it
- 1:32:32was, it's normally 21 minutes, 19 minutes, but this was.
- 1:32:37It's normally around Kings Park as well, isn't it?
- 1:32:40Yeah, yeah. But I, I don't know a bit out
- 1:32:42the loop here, but it was only 15 1/2 minutes, 14 1/2 minutes
- 1:32:47and it was just flat. So which was, which was fine for
- 1:32:51me. That's all I wanted to do.
- 1:32:52Given up, not done 3 workouts in a while.
- 1:32:55And Ryan, you were, you were there.
- 1:32:57You were very sensible. Yeah, we've done this one.
- 1:33:01I remember doing it in on South Perth for sure as well.
- 1:33:05Do you remember that? That was like 21 out and 19
- 1:33:08back. Yeah.
- 1:33:10But I mean, anyway, yeah, this was.
- 1:33:12Yeah, it was pissing down, wasn't it?
- 1:33:13It's like one of them where I was in the office on Friday.
- 1:33:18I remember saying someone like, oh, I'm bizarrely going to be
- 1:33:22doing a running workout in the morning.
- 1:33:24But I feel embarrassed to like be turning my nose up at it
- 1:33:27given like what I should be used to in Britain.
- 1:33:30But now I've turned into a little path Princess and can't
- 1:33:34handle a bit of rain. Soft.
- 1:33:41But but yeah, we did it. I don't know.
- 1:33:47Yeah, bit of a pace change. So you go out a bit more sort of
- 1:33:52steady through the tempo pace and then you pick it up and
- 1:33:54you're somewhere between 10 LB threshold on the way back.
- 1:33:58So I did that. I felt a bit sore to be honest,
- 1:34:00just because it's the like backing up from Thursday and
- 1:34:03Tuesday, but got it done, yes, sort of 325 pace average and
- 1:34:13then someday. You, you're just taking a ride
- 1:34:15again there. Yes, there's a lovely chat,
- 1:34:21Renee down at the group and he, he very kindly did 19 and 8% of
- 1:34:27the work into the into the IT was a bit windy and wet and I
- 1:34:31didn't want to interfere with his workout, so I just said I'll
- 1:34:34sit behind you. Renee, new new new guys training
- 1:34:42one of yeah, refs. He he listened to the pod too.
- 1:34:47So he'll be he he says he listened.
- 1:34:50He moves really nice. He's I think he's new to
- 1:34:52running. He I think as the story goes, he
- 1:34:55was running around somewhere. RAF seen him and said and that,
- 1:34:58you know, front runner, call me, send me send me an e-mail.
- 1:35:02And so he's, yeah, he's he's, he's been training, training
- 1:35:07with the group for a little while now and, and he just moves
- 1:35:11very well. He's getting fitter and fitter
- 1:35:13all the time. I think his PB before Saturday
- 1:35:16was 35 minutes for 10K and we would have gone through, we ran
- 1:35:23maybe 9 KS or thereabouts in 34 minute pace.
- 1:35:28So he's, he was on track for A10 KPB.
- 1:35:31So I think Ryan's getting a bit nervous because I think he's
- 1:35:34Renee doing Bridges Ryan. He is, yeah, he said.
- 1:35:37He is. Any other big names doing
- 1:35:40bridges? So I think Smithy, Andrew
- 1:35:46Halbush, Renee and can't think maybe it'd be good to see Ted G
- 1:35:55there. I can't remember who else there
- 1:35:58could be. Maybe Matthew Massey get a few
- 1:36:02randoms, few few kids, but I mean, I'm I'm going to be
- 1:36:06running with like the 37 to 36 minute group anyway, so.
- 1:36:14Wait, what distance is that tanker?
- 1:36:18Thank you. But what?
- 1:36:19What are you on, however? You just go.
- 1:36:24With the lead and just hang on as long as you can and then kick
- 1:36:28them race time. If if you if you ride around
- 1:36:32Dean, reckon you could like push my bike in your left hand so
- 1:36:36that like when I blow up I can just roll back around to the
- 1:36:39finish. There's actually at about 667
- 1:36:44KS, there's the ferry that takes you straight across from South
- 1:36:47Perth to Elizabeth Kay. That would.
- 1:36:51Be faster. Run it.
- 1:36:52You'd be faster running. Yes.
- 1:37:02Anyway, and the last part of my week was a bit of a long run, a
- 1:37:07few of the lads from the Warp. So Chris from the Warp, the WA
- 1:37:13Running podcast organised a bit of a pace session, opened it up
- 1:37:19to the community if they wanted to come down and practice ahead
- 1:37:23of like You've Got London and what's it the Bunbury Marathon
- 1:37:25coming up. And so they were doing 3 hour
- 1:37:28pace, which is about 4:15. OK.
- 1:37:31And so they mentioned if people want to come down and join for
- 1:37:35as much as you would much as works.
- 1:37:37And they had a few different pace groups going.
- 1:37:39And yeah, went down to that on Sunday and did a few laps, few
- 1:37:45laps of that, which was which was good fun.
- 1:37:47So I was feeling a bit sore unfortunately.
- 1:37:49But other than that, like mechanically stiff and sore, but
- 1:37:52otherwise it was a very enjoyable run.
- 1:37:55Did you? Sorry, this is totally off
- 1:37:57topic. Did you see the new doping news
- 1:38:00just in Albert Courier? The 2021 New York City Marathon
- 1:38:06champion has been handed A5 year doping ban after testing
- 1:38:10positive for Cara, Sarah, CE or A across three separate out of
- 1:38:16competition samples. So he suspended until 2031 and
- 1:38:22all results since October the 3rd 2025 and have been
- 1:38:27forfeited. This includes medals, prize
- 1:38:29money, appearances, whatever. And he came third in the 2025
- 1:38:37New York City Marathon. So that would actually push
- 1:38:39Patty Deaver up to 3rd. So Patty Deaver now has a medal
- 1:38:45world major marathon, which is absolutely crazy.
- 1:38:50And but yeah, what a little dirty, rotten person.
- 1:38:55But yeah, you got to hear first. But wasn't that Davis debut
- 1:39:03Morrison as well? I.
- 1:39:05Think it was, you know, yeah. So before Iran, has he done what
- 1:39:12what months hasn't been able to do on debut?
- 1:39:16Yeah. So he would have been bumped.
- 1:39:184th gets 25,000 not Australian dollars.
- 1:39:21Snowy gets 40 and so everyone gets a nice a better payday.
- 1:39:32Yeah, another Kenyan gets popped and the grass is also green.
- 1:39:38Yeah, what else has this guy done as well?
- 1:39:41This running Iran. He won Canada Marathon last
- 1:39:45year. May work Canada, Ottawa in
- 1:39:49Canada. He came fifth in Boston in 2024,
- 1:39:53third in New York. Let's see, that would have been
- 1:39:59the national champs. Yeah, he would have done that.
- 1:40:02Yeah, he beat Rory. Oh, he'd be absolutely raging.
- 1:40:07Beat Rory by 9 seconds while doping.
- 1:40:12To be sick. Yeah, 2023, second at New York,
- 1:40:214th at Boston. It's just so annoying because
- 1:40:25it's will obviously be going on right now when in these majors
- 1:40:29that we're watching, but then you don't find out for a couple
- 1:40:32of years who it was. But like it's only results from
- 1:40:37October the 3rd 2025 he gets done from.
- 1:40:40Yes. Which is like, oh, we just start
- 1:40:43doping then no, cut the fuck on. It's annoying.
- 1:40:52Dean, back to your training. No, Well, that was it really.
- 1:40:57SO10410 KS of running and one ride.
- 1:41:04What was the ride? 60 KS of bike riding.
- 1:41:08That was my week. Good week BM of that bumbry
- 1:41:19entry, and in no time, weren't you?
- 1:41:22No, no races for me yet. Yeah.
- 1:41:29I mean, I've kind of piggybacked on the back of that week anyway,
- 1:41:31so I'll just say I ran 701K last week actually, which was skewed
- 1:41:38with a bias towards running because of that rain late in the
- 1:41:41week. Probably wouldn't have done an
- 1:41:43extra run, but we'll take it nonetheless.
- 1:41:46And a road 200K. So yeah, trending upwards as
- 1:41:53well, perhaps a little bit quicker than I thought it would
- 1:41:55have been, but just keep my head down, don't ask too many
- 1:42:00questions, keep turning up. Yeah, I think we just keep
- 1:42:03putting them together, right. Yeah.
- 1:42:08Tell you what, I'll be my body will be thankful for a taper
- 1:42:15taper off the bike. Man are.
- 1:42:17You crazy you tapered for like you're done nothing for like 6
- 1:42:20months. I did was drink beer and get
- 1:42:22fat. You know, I was I was thinking
- 1:42:27about this this morning. I cheers like oh I should have
- 1:42:30coined my return fat camp as well but I'm still fast.
- 1:42:37Good. To you like not, you know, I can
- 1:42:42even see in the screen your pixelated screen, it's dropping
- 1:42:44off, yeah. There was a few times when I was
- 1:42:52hoping to hoping to turn my camera off during them dark
- 1:42:56months just looking at the big round face.
- 1:43:02Yeah, what have you been up to? Right.
- 1:43:05So had a pretty decent week, just again doing the boring
- 1:43:10things, ticking the boxes. Started off with 45 minutes on a
- 1:43:15few strides and Monday morning, which was around 12 K and 4:30
- 1:43:22sixes in the afternoon. Then got out for an easy double,
- 1:43:25just 30 minutes churn and 6.9 K at like 420 base and Tuesday was
- 1:43:32a bit of session so I did and I've done it around my short
- 1:43:40track which is pissed me off. My coach is getting a Thunder
- 1:43:43wheel and I will measure the outside.
- 1:43:45So I stopped guessing because it's annoying because it tells
- 1:43:48you're fitter than you are. And the session was the same one
- 1:43:51as last week. So 5 by 5 minutes were like a
- 1:43:5422nd pick up after one five minute wrap.
- 1:43:58So that 5 minutes was that like an LT1.
- 1:44:01Then the 22nd pick up sort of like spikes the lactate with
- 1:44:04this method, like the aim of that get yourself going and then
- 1:44:07bring it right back down And were there Boston twelves and
- 1:44:11I'm not a fan lads, and I think they're they are too big, which
- 1:44:17doesn't help. And so I'm in the market for a
- 1:44:22sort of a tempo threshold, the sort of trainer that doesn't do
- 1:44:28all the work for me. Would you try that pure one of
- 1:44:32the pure issues? See, yeah, I definitely would.
- 1:44:36And not the race one, but there's the there's like a
- 1:44:42training version. Yeah, well, like I do love Pew
- 1:44:45issues so. Yeah, I feel like that might be
- 1:44:47a good option. And after straight after the 5
- 1:44:52by 5, I don't have 15 minutes at Lt. 2.
- 1:44:55So after the first sort of 2526 minutes math, it was 1.6.
- 1:45:01And after the 15 minutes at LT2, it popped up to like 3.7.
- 1:45:05So yeah, take the box, sort of done what the session wanted.
- 1:45:11And then Tuesday evening, the weather was diabolical that I
- 1:45:19actually chose to cycle instead of run, which just shows you how
- 1:45:24bad it would have been. So I just sat on the bike for 45
- 1:45:27minutes, watch a few YouTube videos and.
- 1:45:32Where'd you do that on? I have a little bike at home in
- 1:45:36the garage. You've got the time.
- 1:45:38We got the treadmill. We got a bike and a treadmill.
- 1:45:40The treadmill went back and there was a bike.
- 1:45:43Yeah. Cool.
- 1:45:44And Wednesday morning just got out and done 60 now it's
- 1:45:48actually snowing Wednesday morning again.
- 1:45:52All the seasons this week. So yeah, 60 minutes and a few
- 1:45:55strides. Yeah, it was so cold, around
- 1:45:5814.5 K in like 65 minutes. And that evening I got out to do
- 1:46:0530 minutes easy before circuits, just shake out the legs.
- 1:46:09Then at circus class Thursday, I actually done in sort of a new
- 1:46:14loop that I don't know what I've never done before.
- 1:46:17So the Gaelic pitch at home, you can do like a loop around things
- 1:46:21like Andrew meters. And so I just done 3 by 10
- 1:46:25minutes of five minute jog. So yeah, that was like 11 K
- 1:46:31average pace, 320 fives. And then I had a rest on Friday,
- 1:46:41Thursday evening, I do gym, had a rest on Friday and I got a
- 1:46:45massage off my physio with David Ivers.
- 1:46:50And then Saturday was a relatively big day, so in the
- 1:46:53morning just on my usual warm up.
- 1:46:56And then I had 15 minutes LT1 straight into 15 minutes Lt. 2.
- 1:47:02So that sort of pick up sort of. And again, yeah, it's so hard to
- 1:47:06do these. I feel it was like undulating
- 1:47:10and it was windy. But like when you start into
- 1:47:15that Lt. 2, like you pick up the pace and you sort of hit that
- 1:47:21zone straight away instead of like working into it.
- 1:47:24So like after let's say 2K, like I'm having to slow down my heart
- 1:47:30rate down, which is like not the purpose.
- 1:47:32It's sort of like sort of getting used to it.
- 1:47:35So it is hard. To do.
- 1:47:37And it's hard, but it's hard. It's sorry.
- 1:47:40I was going to say it's hard because, you know, you're meant
- 1:47:43to, you know what the theoretical upper limit is.
- 1:47:47So you want to see, you want to get to that and then sit at
- 1:47:49that. But then if you blast through
- 1:47:51that, then all of a sudden you've been overshot.
- 1:47:54And then it's like, yeah, it's very tricky, yeah.
- 1:48:00But yeah, so it wasn't like I tell you, it was regarding a
- 1:48:03session. It was like AB minus, like not
- 1:48:07the best, but got done. That was like 9 K at three
- 1:48:10teams. And then in the evening, I got
- 1:48:13out to do my first double threshold for a while and it was
- 1:48:182 by 15 minutes, that Lt. 2 off a 5 minute jog.
- 1:48:23And again, I was better at this session, but just the wind
- 1:48:28fucking knock you off your face. So that was 9.7 K at 321 average
- 1:48:36pace. And then yesterday morning just
- 1:48:40got out for a little long run. Just plugged long 75 minutes,
- 1:48:44which was 17 kilometers at 422 pace.
- 1:48:48And again, like the footwear guys are so good, like a ward
- 1:48:54that Romero plus for this and you're just fucking dancing
- 1:48:57along like. So you're a fan of them?
- 1:49:02I love different. I love all the Romero.
- 1:49:04I didn't try to premium a lot yeah, Romero usual are gone.
- 1:49:08They're dosed and they're a very marrow plus now and then yeah
- 1:49:13like just for them like when your legs feel beat up, you like
- 1:49:15you can get rolling in them. They're actually lighter than
- 1:49:18the original Romero for umm, yes, such a nice shit to run on,
- 1:49:22especially like like that was 126 K for the week, my biggest
- 1:49:26week in ages. And so yeah, like when you like
- 1:49:34when I'm like, say, just chill and I'm like looking at shoes
- 1:49:38and I'm like, we actually use them like the reeling.
- 1:49:42It's good to have a selection to, like go through because just
- 1:49:45shaking things up, it freshens up the legs and yeah, but.
- 1:49:52What shoe? What shoe?
- 1:49:53What shoe were you? Are you rolling in right?
- 1:49:56What's that jogger that you're in?
- 1:49:58Is it the premium? That Nike?
- 1:49:59No, that's the plus, Romero plus as well.
- 1:50:03Yeah, there you go. Yeah, might have to get some.
- 1:50:07Yeah, and yeah. How you feeling, Owen?
- 1:50:11You feel like they're trying to take it along.
- 1:50:14Yeah, take long a little bit like that was my biggest week in
- 1:50:16a while so and I was back-to-back like relatively big
- 1:50:19week. So the legs feeling a little
- 1:50:21bit. But yeah, I'm just going to sit
- 1:50:23at this for a little bit. And you should be should get
- 1:50:25fairly fit for when racing comes in May, like we're not even in
- 1:50:29April or April starts tomorrow or the day after.
- 1:50:33So just a lot of time to get fit.
- 1:50:35So would you say this is a bit of like a base, base phase for
- 1:50:39you of your of your training it? 100% is a base phase so just get
- 1:50:43this big base in and then sharp like I don't my peak is July so
- 1:50:48it's going to be a long a long summer.
- 1:50:52And will and will your will this sort of base phase look like
- 1:50:57prioritize double TI noticed like coaches, like particular on
- 1:51:01with your long run, making it a bit more I don't know, I might
- 1:51:08not be the best language, but purposeful than just your easy,
- 1:51:11your standard long run. Like that's the they're going to
- 1:51:14be the sort of key ingredients and then easy running and some
- 1:51:18cross training and lifting in and around that.
- 1:51:21Yeah, basically just get as strong a base as possible and
- 1:51:26then just use that as a foundation to like sprinkle in
- 1:51:29some speed. Then come summer it's a long run
- 1:51:32nearly like that was a really like easy long run.
- 1:51:36Normally I do have a little bit of threshold in it.
- 1:51:37It's sort of like an extra little bit of session, but we're
- 1:51:40trying to get a certain amount of threshold a week.
- 1:51:42And once I just hit that, like you'll get fit.
- 1:51:46So and then like obviously that like the race in May I might be
- 1:51:49100% for but calm and July I shall be should be in decent
- 1:51:56shape. Just you sneeze the after physio
- 1:51:58table really. That being said that you are on
- 1:52:03the massage table. I am very low, yeah, massage
- 1:52:07every week. It's like, yeah, only for like
- 1:52:12my physio, David Ivers sort of helps me out with that.
- 1:52:14I wouldn't be able to do it every week.
- 1:52:16And it is, it's more prevent, it is prevention rather than when
- 1:52:21you cross the line, you just go to it.
- 1:52:24So even if you're not sore, like even if you're not like injured,
- 1:52:26I really do feel like you should go like once a month, once every
- 1:52:30two weeks, whatever. And to keep the body right,
- 1:52:33because it definitely, definitely, definitely makes a
- 1:52:35difference. Does it give you the same work
- 1:52:37over every week or do you tell them what areas?
- 1:52:41So I tell them what areas are sore, but like certain periods
- 1:52:45he'll go in deeper. And if I'm starting like a
- 1:52:48different phase of training, he'll like change the type of
- 1:52:53massage you'd give the legs if you get me.
- 1:52:57And so yeah, super, super lucky to have him and it definitely
- 1:53:02helps, makes a difference. Yeah, good.
- 1:53:09So next race isn't until May there's a.
- 1:53:13Little Rd. Club Rd. relay and not this
- 1:53:16Sunday, the following Sunday. So I'll do that.
- 1:53:18I think I'm doing like a 2 mile and that, but like it won't be
- 1:53:20anything crazy. And yeah other than that it's
- 1:53:24the 2nd of May. I'll do a 1500 and God only
- 1:53:28knows like I'll have no speed done.
- 1:53:30So they're just off threshold training.
- 1:53:32So I'll be interested to see how how that goes.
- 1:53:35Go swimming and actually. YouTube Diaries boys.
- 1:53:45I am a bit sparse. What have I watched this week?
- 1:53:51I watched Jake's live stream and he he gave us a shout out very
- 1:53:55kindly. Oh, did he?
- 1:53:59Where else? I I have I haven't watched yet,
- 1:54:02but the it's got me the the image of his latest YouTube
- 1:54:09Cliff. Have you seen that?
- 1:54:10Oh. Yeah, the house.
- 1:54:12That and the the bike. The bike, the bike and just the
- 1:54:18look of the bike. I don't know.
- 1:54:19It's got, it's got me hooked so. I was watching that something
- 1:54:21what a non wood rolls to the supermarket.
- 1:54:23Yeah, it's it's it's genius content.
- 1:54:27So I'm looking forward to looking forward to watching
- 1:54:30that. But yeah, I haven't consumed too
- 1:54:36much other than the races, really.
- 1:54:40Same. Same for you guys.
- 1:54:43I love I'm loving Macau, like their whole lead up to the the
- 1:54:4710 and I I don't know how not being bad.
- 1:54:51I don't know how they're going to like post a video about the
- 1:54:5410, but I'm just can't wait to see like what it was like their
- 1:54:57reaction because you have to show the good and the bad, like.
- 1:55:00Well, that's what Callum said, didn't you?
- 1:55:03Yeah, yeah, he said. It's part of their agreement.
- 1:55:06Yeah. And but like the likes of Rory,
- 1:55:09like he'd had surgical block and then to just not come together,
- 1:55:12like it's really, really hard for them, but sort of makes you
- 1:55:19accountable as well. Like, yeah, I like that.
- 1:55:23Just one and it can probably dovetail into Double Trouble.
- 1:55:28But did we? Do we want to talk, share our
- 1:55:31views in terms of running news on the selection of the Women's
- 1:55:36USA team for the half marathon? Champs, well, you go first.
- 1:55:43So we recapped it the other day into when it unfolded, but
- 1:55:48basically the top three women in the national championships in
- 1:55:55the trial which was in a selection race, they went off
- 1:55:58course. As a result, they were initially
- 1:56:02disqualified and that they were not initially selected to
- 1:56:07participate for Team USA at the world half marathon champs.
- 1:56:11They later they the race accepted fault for them going
- 1:56:17off course so then awarded prize money and then the USA team have
- 1:56:23lodged an application to World Athletics which have has asked
- 1:56:28for the team to be expanded on a on an exceptions basis such that
- 1:56:32all women get to participate. World Athletics have accepted
- 1:56:36that, however they've said that for the purpose of individual
- 1:56:42and team championship placings that only the top four that are
- 1:56:47all only the four that are nominated are eligible so so as
- 1:56:53to not be unfairly disadvantaging other countries
- 1:56:58at the World Championships. However, all 7 ladies are
- 1:57:02allowed to compete. So that's, but it's a bit of a
- 1:57:08recap as to what's happened in terms of my view on this is that
- 1:57:15I think it's a good thing. And the reason why I think it's
- 1:57:18a good thing is because it's because the women that crossed
- 1:57:25the finish line 123 did nothing but follow the course and
- 1:57:31finished 123 and therefore technically earned the right to
- 1:57:34participate. And then the three women that
- 1:57:36were incorrectly let off course by the league car also did
- 1:57:39nothing wrong. So I like the fact that they've
- 1:57:43found a way to let them participate.
- 1:57:46And then I think that yes, the fairest thing with the other
- 1:57:49countries is to only select a small is to select the cap team.
- 1:57:53And I think they've cut everyone's tried to come at it
- 1:57:57with a way of trying to operate in, you know, inclusive and
- 1:58:03fairness with those things front of mind and came up with a
- 1:58:06reasonable solution. So I'm for.
- 1:58:10All right, so if you actually finished, if you actually say if
- 1:58:15you weren't one of the three girls that went on and you were
- 1:58:18your one who can't was in 4th and went on to win it, would you
- 1:58:20really feel like you earned that spot?
- 1:58:25So part of my so part of my job is to read rules and apply rules
- 1:58:32as they're they're read and by the letter of the law, I think
- 1:58:36like. No, but I'm asking as a person
- 1:58:40like would you feel like you deserve to go?
- 1:58:43We're not talking about like you personally, would you?
- 1:58:45I know I wouldn't because you didn't come like 3 girls were
- 1:58:49way ahead. I think it's bullshit that
- 1:58:51American bend the rule. Like they just get to bend the
- 1:58:53rules. Like they fucked up.
- 1:58:56They have to deal with the shit. Like I know the three girls,
- 1:58:58they would give up their spots. Apparently in interviews people
- 1:59:01have said that they would give up their spots.
- 1:59:04But I wouldn't want to ask. Them to stopping or stopping
- 1:59:07Ireland going off and making a mistake so we get to send
- 1:59:11another trade. Well, they're not going to.
- 1:59:15It's not. No, they're not counting.
- 1:59:16They're just being allowed to participate.
- 1:59:19Yeah, but it's still not fair. They still have 7 American on
- 1:59:22the start line. I learn more towards Owen's
- 1:59:30point of view, but I think the the, the whole participation
- 1:59:34thing in like a global championship or whatever.
- 1:59:39It's not about participation is that this is like the top of the
- 1:59:42top and we don't need to be like sympathizing with people who've
- 1:59:47who've. Done nothing wrong.
- 1:59:49Yeah, yeah. And earned the right because
- 1:59:52they won their ranks. And part of part of, I guess.
- 1:59:58Have you ever gone off course, Owen?
- 2:00:02Such word now. Ryan and I are quite experienced
- 2:00:06in this. So there's a lot of empathy for,
- 2:00:08you know, now you've got to these, I don't know, Look, I
- 2:00:13hear your point and I think it's very valid.
- 2:00:15I also empathize with the people that potentially at some point
- 2:00:19thought they might have run their way onto a team without
- 2:00:21necessarily knowing all the particulars of what was
- 2:00:24unfolding on the day. Yeah, I, I think, I think
- 2:00:31they've tried to, I think they've copped a lot of Flack,
- 2:00:33the US track and field for how they've handled this sort of
- 2:00:37stuff. I think they tried to do what is
- 2:00:39in the spirit of trying to be fair and inclusive as it's a
- 2:00:42once off. I I also think that, yeah,
- 2:00:45today. And it's questionable whether or
- 2:00:47not they're at their spots too, but technically they did.
- 2:00:52So it's hard for someone to say you shouldn't be allowed to go.
- 2:00:55I reckon if, if the US requested it, that alone would have been
- 2:00:59enough to signal their intent and like compensate the the
- 2:01:04three women who technically crossed the line 1st and then it
- 2:01:08would have been happily resolved with, OK, we paid you all as
- 2:01:11winners. But like, we're all in agreement
- 2:01:13that the three who are going on the team are the three who went
- 2:01:16off course and World Athletic should have had a bit of
- 2:01:20integrity and backbone about them and maybe just said, like,
- 2:01:24sorry, we're not like kind of here to compensate for your
- 2:01:28mistakes. The rules are the rules.
- 2:01:32So why do you get to send the three that went off course then?
- 2:01:35Why do you think they did better?
- 2:01:37They were well at It's not like it was close.
- 2:01:41Why was it better? Runners like the standard
- 2:01:44qualifying standard. They are good enough.
- 2:01:47What happens if someone accidentally ran onto the inside
- 2:01:50of the track at the US trials and then like stumbled into the
- 2:01:53track and stumbled out and they were winning, but they the.
- 2:01:57Girls haven't brought their standard, they haven't run a
- 2:02:00standard. These other three are way way
- 2:02:02better. So they should go because
- 2:02:08they've run the standard. And they are better runners.
- 2:02:11They were going to win. If there was no freaking detour,
- 2:02:16they would have won. Like, I wouldn't mind.
- 2:02:18I don't think. I think they can only let three
- 2:02:21wear the proper uniform. I think the others don't.
- 2:02:23They don't get to wear the proper uniform.
- 2:02:25I actually think it's a pity vote and I I don't know why the
- 2:02:28hell you'd want to go. Maybe a nice little holiday to
- 2:02:30Copenhagen. I don't know.
- 2:02:32I'll be on the sidelines. There anyway maybe to say yeah.
- 2:02:37That probably is also all the federations.
- 2:02:40I don't know exactly, but maybe say for example UK, who've got
- 2:02:44who would have 3 entrants in it, they might now look at their
- 2:02:47fourth fastest and be like, hey, our fourth fastest is faster
- 2:02:51than any of these American ones like the 4th, the 5th, 6th and
- 2:02:567th ones. Why do they get to take those
- 2:02:59girls and we have a fourth person who's faster than them
- 2:03:02just because they messed up. But I mean, it's ultimately it's
- 2:03:12harmless, isn't it? No like they can like change the
- 2:03:17team like you can run a tax to race and that like 7 women.
- 2:03:22I don't get why it's 7 like why is it not three an extra 3?
- 2:03:27Where are you sending an extra 4?
- 2:03:31I mean, maybe they thought you shoot for seven, you might land
- 2:03:34at six. They actually asked for 8:00.
- 2:03:41I don't know. Leave it there.
- 2:03:46Double trouble. From both, From both sides.
- 2:03:50Even though I have another one that'll hold off for next week.
- 2:03:54Oh, you picked my curiosity, but.
- 2:03:59Little Taser. Yeah.
- 2:04:01What's the subject? Running.
- 2:04:05You know. Holder, another podcast selling.
- 2:04:09Oh yeah, Holder. Yeah.
- 2:04:15Hold it off, we need to get some restrictions around who this
- 2:04:21content goes out to before you start far enough.
- 2:04:24That might need to be behind, yeah.
- 2:04:27I will. All right, I reckon we're done.
- 2:04:32Unless we Owen, you're you're definitely done.
- 2:04:35Dean, you got anything else to say?
- 2:04:40No good. All right, good.
- 2:04:43Legal training, boys, we're on the up.
- 2:04:46Let's go. Let's go road London calling out
- 2:04:50next week. Out this week.
- 2:04:53Loads of good shit coming. Sayonara.
- 2:04:57Yeah, Ciao. See you guys.
