Latest / Traveler’s Tales / Streetcorners to a Sinking Ship: The True Story of John Harper
Transcript
- 0:00There are some stories that history records in headlines, and others that heaven records
- 0:18in eternity.
- 0:20When most people hear the name Titanic, they think of luxury, icebergs, and tragedy.
- 0:27They think of the band playing as the ship tilted, of lifeboats lowered into the freezing
- 0:32Atlantic, or, tragically, of over 1,500 lives lost in a single night.
- 0:39But woven into that darkness is a quieter story.
- 0:43A story about a preacher, a widower, a father, a man whose final sermon was preached while
- 0:50floating in the Atlantic Ocean.
- 0:53His name was John Harper, and his final message was the same one he had preached his entire
- 1:00life.
- 1:02Welcome to Traveler's Tales, brought to you by Enjoying the Journey.
- 1:05I'm your host, Greg Dowdy.
- 1:07It is my privilege to share the faith stories of men and women in history who were uniquely
- 1:12used by God to impact their generation with the gospel of Christ.
- 1:17The God they served is the same God you and I serve.
- 1:21And may today's story stir your heart to serve the Lord.
- 1:26John Harper was born in Scotland in 1872.
- 1:30He was converted at 13 years of age, and by 17, he was preaching Christ in the streets.
- 1:37This wasn't emotional enthusiasm or young, temporary zeal.
- 1:41No, it became the steady direction of his life.
- 1:45He pastored near Glasgow and watched a small congregation grow from 25 people to nearly
- 1:51500.
- 1:52Later, he would serve in London.
- 1:55In 1911, he crossed the Atlantic to preach at what we now know as Moody Church.
- 2:02Those meetings were so powerfully blessed that a two-week invitation turned into two
- 2:07months of ministry.
- 2:10But Harper's life was not easy.
- 2:12His health failed, his wife died, and he raised his daughter alone.
- 2:19Here's something remarkable about John Harper.
- 2:22He was afraid of water.
- 2:24He couldn't swim and had nearly drowned three times before.
- 2:29Yet he was never afraid to speak for Christ.
- 2:33In April of 1912, John Harper and his young daughter boarded the Titanic.
- 2:37He was returning to Chicago for another season of meetings.
- 2:41A friend had even offered to pay for passage on a different ship, but Harper had declined.
- 2:47And on April 14th, the Titanic struck the iceberg.
- 2:51When panic spread across the deck, Harper first made sure his daughter was safely placed
- 2:57in a lifeboat.
- 2:59Witnesses said that he then urged men to give their places to women and children.
- 3:04And when the great ship finally slipped beneath the surface, Harper found himself in the icy
- 3:09Atlantic.
- 3:11After nearly 50 minutes, 50 minutes in freezing chaotic darkness, he moved from person to
- 3:17person asking a single question, are you saved?
- 3:23Not can you swim?
- 3:24Not what class were you traveling in?
- 3:27Not even do you think help is coming?
- 3:29But are you saved?
- 3:31He quoted Acts 16 31 to those who floated by him while clinging to wreckage, believe
- 3:37on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.
- 3:42Years later in a church meeting in Hamilton, Ontario, a powerful moment unfolded.
- 3:47Young Scotsman stood to give his testimony.
- 3:50He explained that he had been aboard the Titanic that night.
- 3:54He described clinging to a piece of wreckage in the freezing Atlantic when a voice called
- 3:58out to him through the darkness.
- 4:00It was John Harper.
- 4:02The young man recalled Harper asking him plainly, are you saved?
- 4:06And when he answered no, Harper urged him with the words of Acts 16 31.
- 4:12Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.
- 4:16The young man admitted that he resisted at first.
- 4:21Moments later, John Harper slipped beneath the surface of the water into eternity.
- 4:27A short time later, as the cries grew fewer and the cold grew sharper, this young man
- 4:33called out to God himself and trusted Christ.
- 4:37Standing there in that meeting years later, he concluded his testimony with words no one
- 4:42in the room would ever forget.
- 4:44He said, I am John Harper's last convert.
- 4:49Something powerful about this story.
- 4:52The Titanic had three passenger classes, first, second, and third.
- 4:58But after the sinking, the white star line listed only two categories, known to be saved,
- 5:05known to be lost.
- 5:08Wealth didn't matter, influence didn't matter, titles didn't matter.
- 5:13When time ran out, there were only two outcomes.
- 5:17And friend, that's still true today.
- 5:20Each of us will fall into one of those two categories, known to be saved or known to
- 5:26be lost.
- 5:27And John Harper lived his life like he believed that.
- 5:31It's a challenging lesson for us all, because Harper didn't suddenly become bold when the
- 5:36ship began to sink, no.
- 5:38He was bold for Christ, long before the iceberg.
- 5:41He preached on street corners, he prayed through the night for church members by name.
- 5:46He dedicated his life to proclaiming the gospel.
- 5:50The ocean that night simply revealed what years had prepared.
- 5:54Harper feared water, but he feared wasted opportunity more.
- 6:00He couldn't swim, but he could witness.
- 6:03And while most of us will never have an opportunity like Harper did that night, each of us walk
- 6:09past eternal souls every single day.
- 6:14Neighbors, coworkers, family members.
- 6:18When was the last time eternity shaped your urgency?
- 6:22When was the last time you spoke plainly and lovingly about Christ?
- 6:27And even more personal, have you believed on the Lord Jesus Christ?
- 6:33Before Harper could preach salvation that night in the Atlantic, he had settled it in
- 6:37his own heart.
- 6:40Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.
- 6:44This wasn't just his final sentence, it was his lifelong conviction.
- 6:49Friend, someone near you is drifting closer and closer to eternity, and you may be the
- 6:55only voice who will speak to them about Christ.
- 6:59Don't wait for a crisis to make you bold.
- 7:02Share Christ today while there is still time.
- 7:07Thank you for taking time to listen to Traveler's Tales today.
