- 0:00Most of the chronic symptoms and diseases we battle today are simply different
- 0:04expressions of the same disaster happening in other parts of the body.
- 0:08The mitochondria are hurt by the way that we're living. A poorly powered cell
- 0:12becomes dysfunctional.
- 0:13The immune system tries to help but can't. And in trying, the immune system makes the issue worse.
- 0:20That is a quote from the book Good Energy written by Casey Means,
- 0:24which we're talking about today
- 0:25because it was one of the most impactful books that I read this year.
- 0:29The wisdom and the insights and just the common sense stuff she talks about
- 0:33in this book applies to every single person listening. That includes you.
- 0:38Welcome to the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 0:41This is where you will find clarity and simple, sustainable strategies to feel better.
- 0:46I want to help you figure out your root causes.
- 0:49My name is Esther Yunkin. I am a registered nurse.
- 0:52I spent about 17 years in the emergency department and then got sick and tired
- 0:56of putting band-aids on chronic things.
- 0:58I went back to school and now I have been in holistic health education for about 10 years.
- 1:03I know how exhausting it is to live with fatigue, brain fog,
- 1:07and the ups and downs of Hashimoto's and that is why I'm here.
- 1:11I'm here to cut through the confusion and to give you practical steps that support
- 1:15your body, calm your immune system, so that you can regain your energy and feel like yourself again.
- 1:21I read a lot. I know that reading fiction, you know, stories, reduces stress.
- 1:28And specifically, I stay away
- 1:30from the suspense and the murder and all of that, which I actually love.
- 1:33But it increases my stress level. I have learned that. So I read a lot of fiction.
- 1:39And I read a lot of nonfiction. I have my goal, I think I set my goal around 100 books this year.
- 1:45But my real goal, the thing I actually have to work at is 25% of my books, I want to be nonfiction.
- 1:53So learning about life, reading memoirs, biographies, educational things,
- 1:58and things that will help you through this podcast.
- 2:02So this week and next week, we're going to talk about the two most impactful books that I read.
- 2:07The first one is Good Energy by Casey Means.
- 2:11She is an MD. She's a doctor. She was like top of her class.
- 2:15Super, super smart. And then she got disillusioned with the broken medical system,
- 2:20just like so many of us. That is also my story.
- 2:22Got disillusioned, got fed up with how broken it was, and turned to holistic
- 2:27health, turned to whole health education, because I want to help people make
- 2:31a difference in their lives.
- 2:33She encountered the same thing. She was an ear, nose, and throat surgeon,
- 2:37and she was doing this same surgery over and over.
- 2:41And finally, she has started wondering like, why are all of my patients dealing with this?
- 2:45She went digging into figuring out why people are getting sick in the first
- 2:49place. Why do they need all of these ear, nose, and throat surgeries?
- 2:53Why are they having the problems? And she discovered what we've talked about
- 2:57a lot on the podcast, because it's so prevalent among everybody.
- 3:02She learned that chronic inflammation is a crucial instigator of all types of
- 3:08diseases and conditions.
- 3:10Not just inside the ear, nose, and throat, but everything from cancer to cardiovascular
- 3:15disease to autoimmune disease and neurological disorders.
- 3:18Her book, Good Energy, explores the root causes of all diseases,
- 3:25including autoimmune diseases.
- 3:27So you are here listening to the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 3:30If you have listened to any number of my episodes, you have probably heard me
- 3:35talk about the three root causes, the three things that everybody has if you
- 3:40have an autoimmune condition.
- 3:42Number one is a genetic component.
- 3:44Number two is a gut component. And number three is one or more triggers.
- 3:49Well, this book, Good Energy, goes down to the cellular level.
- 3:53And we're really talking about that genetic component because no,
- 3:57you can't change who you came from.
- 3:59You can't change your parents, your grandparents, your lineage,
- 4:02but you can change how those jeans express on a day-to-day basis.
- 4:08The jean is there. Whether it turns off or on is really up to you and your lifestyle
- 4:15and then how you take care of yourself.
- 4:18My boys, I have four boys, and they absolutely love Legos.
- 4:23They have an entire room that is the Lego closet. It is.
- 4:28Packed with Legos. And so when I think of the cell, I think in terms of Legos.
- 4:35Every single creation that my boys build with Legos is made up of tiny individual bricks.
- 4:42Same thing with your body. It is made up of teeny tiny individual cells.
- 4:46Well, if my boys Legos are, if they're generic, they don't work as well.
- 4:52My boys do not want to buy generic Legos.
- 4:54It has to be Lego brand. Because the generic Legos, even though they say that
- 5:00they're going to work and that they're, you know, easily swappable for real
- 5:05Legos, my boys know the difference and they don't work as well.
- 5:09And when you have the generics mixed in, or when you have broken Legos,
- 5:14then the entire build can suffer.
- 5:16Same thing happens for you. When your cells are not functioning well,
- 5:22when they are tired, when they don't have as enough energy within the cell,
- 5:26that ATP, which is their energy currency, when they don't have enough, they can't do their job.
- 5:31And when your cell cannot do its job, then it's going to affect everything that it impacts.
- 5:36So, you know, your cells make up tissues, organs, everything,
- 5:40all of your health systems. It is all reliant on the teeny tiny individual cells.
- 5:46And you have trillions of them. And it is our job to take care of them.
- 5:51So I'm going to read a couple quotes from the book. And in talking about inflammation.
- 5:56Inflammation is one of the things we deal with with Hashimoto's because the
- 6:00full name of Hashimoto's is Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
- 6:04When you hear itis at the end of anything, it means inflammation.
- 6:09Hashimoto's thyroiditis means your thyroid is inflamed because of the autoimmune
- 6:15condition called Hashimoto's.
- 6:17Hashimoto's is attacking your thyroid. Your thyroid is inflamed.
- 6:19Therefore, the full name is Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
- 6:23So she's talking about inflammation here.
- 6:25It says inflammation leads to disease, pain, and suffering.
- 6:30Inflammation takes root because core dysfunctions occur inside our cells,
- 6:35impacting how the cells function, signal, and replicate themselves.
- 6:39If we truly want to restore general health in the body and mind,
- 6:43we must look one layer deeper than the mechanism of inflammation alone and into
- 6:48the very center of the cell itself.
- 6:51And then she introduces this concept of good energy.
- 6:55Your cell is powered by, do you know it?
- 6:58By the mitochondria. The mitochondria power the cell and the mitochondria make
- 7:03ATP, which I already alluded to.
- 7:06ATP is like the energy is the currency of your cell.
- 7:09Every single day, I did not know this until I read this book.
- 7:14Your body is constantly making ATP.
- 7:16Every single cell needs to make the ATP to run the cell. It is like making the batteries, right?
- 7:21Well, every single day, your body makes 88 pounds of ATP.
- 7:29It makes it and uses it so quickly that we never notice it.
- 7:34You're not gaining 88 pounds every day. It just, your cells make it and use
- 7:39it. So it never impacts your weight.
- 7:41But that's how much your cells are making every single day. We have to make
- 7:46sure that our cells have enough energy to power their function so they can work so that you can work.
- 7:54And throughout the book, she goes into 10 different things that cause mitochondria
- 8:00to not work as well or to be damaged or to just not function well.
- 8:05And those 10 things are chronic overnutrition, not undernutrition,
- 8:10but overnutrition, nutrient deficiencies.
- 8:13Microbiome issue, that's the gut, a sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress,
- 8:18medications and drugs, sleep deprivation, environmental toxins and pollutants,
- 8:24artificial light and circadian disruption, and thermoneutrality.
- 8:28And she goes into each one of those in the book. And she doesn't just tell you
- 8:32about it. She gives you simple ways to fix it.
- 8:34The back, like third maybe, of the book is her four-week protocol to start fixing things.
- 8:40And she also has a lot of recipes in it.
- 8:43So this book is very, very practical.
- 8:46Yes, it's scientific. It tells you what's going on. It tells you about the cells.
- 8:51It tells you about the energy of your cell and everything that goes into disease
- 8:55and how to fix it, but she's also giving you very simple practical ways for
- 9:01solutions that you can apply to your life today.
- 9:04Because she understands that, yes, we absolutely need to make sure that our
- 9:09cells are healthy and that our cells have the energy that they need in order to function.
- 9:14But she also understands that your cells can't stop you or change your lifestyle.
- 9:19In fact, she puts it this way. She said, an immune cell cannot stop you from
- 9:24drinking a soda, make you filter
- 9:25your water, turn off the stress-inducing notifications on your phone,
- 9:29prevent you from eating hormone-disrupting pesticides and microplastics,
- 9:33or get you to go to sleep earlier.
- 9:35So the immune cell will use the tools at its disposal. It will recruit more
- 9:40immune cells. It will send out more inflammatory signals, and it will just keep
- 9:44fighting until things resolve.
- 9:46But the problems don't resolve because the damaging environmental inputs never resolve.
- 9:52This is the root of chronic inflammation.
- 9:55End quote. So we know that with all autoimmune diseases, our immune system has
- 10:03gone a little overzealous and started attacking things that it shouldn't attack.
- 10:09And a lot of that is due to that inflammation. Your immune system is trying
- 10:14to respond to all of this inflammation. It gets confused, starts attacking things
- 10:18that it shouldn't, and it actually then causes more inflammation,
- 10:20which can exacerbate the problem.
- 10:24Later in the book, she goes on to talk about this. She said that metabolic and
- 10:29autoimmune issues are tightly linked because a cell that can't make energy properly
- 10:34sends out danger signals, which can trigger the immune system to invade.
- 10:39So she's tying here the inflammation and the poor energy of the cell,
- 10:43the mitochondrial problems of the cell, to autoimmune conditions.
- 10:47She's also tying it back to metabolic issues.
- 10:50She says that there's a strong tie between people who have autoimmune problems
- 10:55and people who become diabetic or have other metabolic problems.
- 11:00There are so many things that are related, and I love how she ties things together in this book.
- 11:05But like I said, she doesn't just tie it together. She gives you hope,
- 11:09and she gives you practical solutions, and that is so good.
- 11:13Another spot, she says, so at the beginning of the four weeks to good energy, which is her protocol.
- 11:19She says, which I don't know, it's so convicting.
- 11:23All right, listen to this. She said, if simple habits like eating whole foods,
- 11:27getting enough sleep, practicing regular movement, and managing stress are so
- 11:31transformational, why do so few people consistently perform them?
- 11:36It's a great question, right?
- 11:38We know what we should do, but we have a hard time putting it into practice.
- 11:43And that is one of the things we work on in the Holistic Hashimoto's course,
- 11:47because I can teach you the basics and I can teach you what's going on.
- 11:51I can help you discover what's going on in your body and what is going to work
- 11:55for you as far as healing and figuring out what next step that you need to take.
- 12:02And a lot of it is going back to these basics, figuring out how can you sleep
- 12:06better? How can you lower your stress?
- 12:08I'm going to give you simple tips inside the program because sometimes we're
- 12:13just too overwhelmed or the brain fog is too high and you just can't think through
- 12:18how can I implement this?
- 12:19You know you need to, you just can't figure it out.
- 12:23So that's what we work on in the Holistic Hashimoto's program.
- 12:26Another thing I like about this book is she gives you specific labs that you
- 12:30need to check. She wants these checked at least annually.
- 12:34She wants a fasting glucose, your triglycerides, your HDL, she wants your waist
- 12:39circumference measured, and your blood pressure taken.
- 12:43There are specific criteria for each one of those tests.
- 12:47And if all five of those things are within the optimal range,
- 12:53then you would be considered to have good energy at a cellular level.
- 12:58I'm not talking about like new age energy, like the energy, I don't know, aura.
- 13:04We're talking about cellular energy, the batteries, the energy,
- 13:08the motors of your cells so that they can work.
- 13:11And so if you score well on these five different, the labs and the blood pressure
- 13:17and the waist circumference, you have good energy.
- 13:19But guess how many people have good energy according into those,
- 13:24just those simple five tests.
- 13:26It is 93.2%. Do not score that.
- 13:31Only 6.8% of our population is going to have good numbers for all five of those.
- 13:39Let me tell you what those good numbers are.
- 13:41Your fasting glucose is less than 100 milligrams per deciliter.
- 13:46Triglycerides are less than 150 milligrams per deciliter. HDL above 40 milligrams
- 13:53per deciliter for men or among or sorry or 50 milligrams per deciliter for women.
- 14:01Your waist circumference is less than or equal to 102 centimeters which is 40
- 14:06inches for men and less than or equal to 88 centimeters or 35 inches for women.
- 14:13Blood pressure should be less than 120 over 80. Those are the ideal criteria.
- 14:20And if you check each one of those
- 14:22five boxes, you are in the 6.8% of the population who has good energy.
- 14:29Now you have heard me talk on the podcast before about activators.
- 14:34These are natural products that you take to tell your body to make something.
- 14:39So the Protandim NRF2 is the one that I talk about the most.
- 14:43You take this combination of five herbs and it tells your body to make antioxidants.
- 14:49These antioxidants clean up oxidative stress.
- 14:52She also talks a lot about oxidative stress in this book because oxidative stress
- 14:57is like the rusting of a car or the browning of a banana, but on a cellular level.
- 15:02So you think of, you know, the knights back in the ancient times, medieval times.
- 15:08If they had a whole body suit of armor and it was all rusty,
- 15:13they would not be able to do their job, right?
- 15:15Well, same thing with your cells. If they are all rusty, they can't move.
- 15:20They can't take care of what they need to take care of. They can't do their
- 15:23job. We need to clean up the cell.
- 15:25Not just focus on the energy, but also cleaning up the rust, the oxidative stress.
- 15:31So that is what Protandim NRF2 does. It helps clean up the oxidative stress on your cell.
- 15:38Then we add in the Protandim NRF1, which impacts the mitochondria.
- 15:44It helps your body produce, number one, more mitochondria, and it helps the
- 15:49mitochondria produce more energy, more ATP.
- 15:53It helps it function option optimally. So if you are looking for a simple way
- 15:58that you can say, oh, well, I know that I don't have good energy.
- 16:02I know that I'm exhausted all the time. I know that I have a lot of these symptoms.
- 16:06And of course, every single symptom is your body whispering,
- 16:10crying, or yelling and screaming for help, depending on the severity of the symptom.
- 16:15So we know that when you're dealing with low energy or low cellular energy or
- 16:19symptoms, we need to focus on oxidative stress and mitochondrial energy.
- 16:24And that is why every single day ever since I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's
- 16:29and even before, I think like maybe six months before,
- 16:33I started taking for tandem NRF2 and NRF1 every single day because I wanted
- 16:39to focus on helping my cells clean up and have enough energy to do what they were supposed to do.
- 16:45Because of course, even before I got my diagnosis, I was still dealing with
- 16:49Hashimoto's and that overwhelming fatigue.
- 16:51And I was already trying to look for ways to address it.
- 16:55And if you are also looking for ways to help your cells clean up and have more
- 17:00energy, I highly recommend those two products.
- 17:03Together, they are called the Dual Synergizer.
- 17:05You'll find the link down in the show notes. And it's
- 17:08I'm going to warn you, if you are going to start that, don't just take it for a couple days.
- 17:13It's not like an ibuprofen where you're going to feel it kick in in an hour or so.
- 17:17These are happening at a cellular level and it takes about three to four months
- 17:21before you're feeling enough changes in your cells.
- 17:25Now we could do lab tests and we know from clinical studies that you will have
- 17:31an average of 40% reduction in oxidative stress within just the first 30 days.
- 17:37So it is, there's significant things happening on the inside,
- 17:41but you have like 37 to 40 trillion cells inside your body.
- 17:46So it does take a while for you to feel things.
- 17:50And also you don't feel oxidative stress. You don't feel the mitochondria slow down.
- 17:55Those happen over time as your body is like, okay, now I'm like really suffering.
- 18:02It takes a while for the symptoms to really crank up so that you can hear them, you can recognize them.
- 18:08The same thing happens in reverse. You're not going to feel a difference overnight.
- 18:12Most people. Some people do. I've had a couple people tell me within a week
- 18:16they felt a transformation.
- 18:18They felt significantly different.
- 18:21But most people, you're going to want to stay on these for three to four months.
- 18:25So just have that in the back of your mind when you order. go on subscription
- 18:29and take these faithfully every single day for three to four months and then
- 18:34let's see how you're doing.
- 18:35So I highly recommend the book Good Energy by Casey Means.
- 18:39I also highly recommend that Dual Synergizer to help your cells clean up and
- 18:44to focus on their energy while you are putting all of those lifestyle and things in place.
- 18:49All right, next week I'm going to tell you about the other book that made my top two.
- 18:54I am not going to do a podcast of the third best book, but let me tell you what it was.
- 19:00I've mentioned it before. It is Rethinking Hypothyroidism by Antonio Bianco.
- 19:05He's also a doctor, and this one is really science-heavy. It has a lot of really
- 19:10good information about hypothyroidism, about medications, about natural thyroid
- 19:15medications, about Synthroid and pharmaceutical shenanigans.
- 19:19It's a good book. I'm not going to do a podcast about that one,
- 19:22but that is my third most impactful nonfiction book.
- 19:26If you want to know what fiction books I read this year. You can follow me on Storygraph.
- 19:32I love Storygraph.
- 19:34I love so many features about it. I think it's so much better than Goodreads.
- 19:38I'll put a link down in the show notes to my Storygraph.
- 19:41I'll also put links to the two things that I want you to do.
- 19:45And I know at the end of a podcast, I'm supposed to leave you with one thing.
- 19:49Well, that one thing is focusing on your cellular health to clean them up and to provide more energy.
- 19:55You can do that with a protocol in the book by Dr. Casey Means, and that is Good Energy.
- 20:01I'll have a link to buying the book down in the show notes, and I'll also have
- 20:04a link to the Dual Synergizer, which is something just so simple.
- 20:09It's going to take you just a couple seconds in the morning to swallow those
- 20:13tablets and those little capsules,
- 20:14and then you're helping your body make better energy. So, so simple.
- 20:19This podcast is for informational and educational purposes only.
- 20:23Please discuss any changes with your trusted health care provider.
- 20:26To take your next step, join our school community and explore the courses available there.
- 20:30You do not have to figure your health out alone.
- 20:34So that is school, S-K-O-O-L dot com, and it is the Health with Hashimoto's community.
- 20:39I'll see you next time on the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
