- 0:25Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:32Today, we're exploring the cool world of winter sports and
- 0:36activities from all around the globe.
- 0:38Whether you live where it snows every winter or you've only seen
- 0:41snow in pictures and movies, there's a lot to discover about
- 0:44the ways people have fun and stay active when the weather
- 0:47gets cold. Let's start with the basics.
- 0:50Winter sports are activities and games that usually take place on
- 0:53snow or ice. These sports can be played for
- 0:56fun, as part of a team, or even in big competitions like the
- 1:00Winter Olympics. The cold weather and frozen
- 1:03landscapes make these sports unique, and they give people a
- 1:06special way to enjoy winter time.
- 1:08One of the most popular and oldest winter sports is ice
- 1:11skating. Ice skating means gliding across
- 1:14a sheet of ice using special shoes called skates with thin
- 1:18metal blades on the bottom. People have been ice skating for
- 1:21hundreds of years. In the Netherlands, where there
- 1:24are many frozen canals in winter, people skate for fun and
- 1:28even have races. In Canada and the United States,
- 1:32you'll find ice skating rinks in parks and cities and sometimes
- 1:36even outdoors on frozen ponds. Ice skating has led to other
- 1:39sports too. For example, figure skating is a
- 1:42sport where people perform jumps, spins, and dance like
- 1:46moves on the ice. It's known for its beautiful
- 1:48costumes and music. Did you know that the first
- 1:51figure skating competition was held in the mid 1800s in Europe?
- 1:55Today, figure skating is a popular event in the Winter
- 1:58Olympics and is watched by millions of people.
- 2:01Another exciting ice sport is ice hockey.
- 2:04Ice hockey is a fast-paced team sport played on an ice rink.
- 2:08Each team has six players, including a goalie, and they use
- 2:12sticks to try to get a small rubber puck into the other
- 2:14team's net. Ice hockey is very popular in
- 2:17countries like Canada, Russia, Finland and Sweden.
- 2:21In North America, many kids play hockey in youth leagues and some
- 2:26even dream of becoming professional players.
- 2:28A fun fact, the National Hockey League or NHL, is the most
- 2:33famous Hockey League in the world and its championship
- 2:36trophy is called the Stanley Cup.
- 2:38Let's move from ice to snow. Skiing is one of the best known
- 2:42winter sports and comes in many different styles.
- 2:45Alpine skiing, also called downhill skiing, is when you go
- 2:48down a snowy mountain on 2 long flat boards called skis.
- 2:53Skiers use poles to help them balance and turn.
- 2:56There are ski resorts in places like the Alps in Europe, the
- 2:59Rocky Mountains in North America, and the Japanese Alps
- 3:02in Asia. People of all ages enjoy skiing
- 3:05for fun, and some train to race at high speeds in competitions.
- 3:09Cross country skiing is a little different.
- 3:12Instead of going down steep hills, you glide across flat or
- 3:15gently rolling snowy landscapes. Cross country skiing is a
- 3:19popular way to travel through snowy forests and fields,
- 3:23especially in countries like Norway, Sweden and Finland.
- 3:27In these places, it's not just a sport, it's also a way to get
- 3:30around when the snow is deep. Another snow sport you might
- 3:33have heard of is snowboarding. Snowboarding started in the
- 3:36United States in the 1960s and quickly became popular around
- 3:40the world. Instead of two skis,
- 3:43snowboarders use a single wide board and slide down snowy
- 3:46slopes, sometimes doing tricks and jumps.
- 3:49Snowboarding is a big part of the Winter X Games, which is a
- 3:53competition for action sports. If you like speed, you might
- 3:56enjoy learning about bobsledding, luge, and skeleton.
- 4:00These are all fast sports that take place on an ice track, kind
- 4:03of like a frozen slide with lots of twists and turns.
- 4:06In bobsledding, teams of two or four people ride in a sled and
- 4:10race down the track trying to get the fastest time.
- 4:13The sleds can go as fast as a car on a highway.
- 4:17Luge and skeleton are similar, but in luge athletes lie on
- 4:21their backs on a small sled and in skeleton they go head first
- 4:24on their stomachs. These sports are very exciting
- 4:27to watch and are also part of the Winter Olympics.
- 4:30In some countries. People enjoy curling.
- 4:33Curling is a team sport played on ice where players slide heavy
- 4:37stones towards a target. It's a bit like bowling on ice,
- 4:40but players also use brooms to sweep the ice in front of the
- 4:43stone, helping it to travel further or change direction.
- 4:47Curling is very popular in Canada and Scotland and is known
- 4:51for being a sport that people of all ages can play together.
- 4:54Did you know that there's a winter sport called biathlon?
- 4:57Biathlon combines cross country skiing with target shooting.
- 5:01Athletes ski a certain distance, then stop at a shooting range
- 5:05and try to hit small targets with a rifle.
- 5:08Then they ski again and stop to shoot a few.
- 5:11It's a test of both speed and accuracy.
- 5:14Biathlon is especially popular in European countries like
- 5:17Germany, Norway, and Russia. Let's not forget about sledding,
- 5:21which is a favorite winter activity for kids in many snowy
- 5:25places. Sledding or tobogganing is when
- 5:28you sit on a sled and slide down a snowy hill.
- 5:31You don't need any special skills, just a sled and a good
- 5:34hill. In some places, people build
- 5:37long, twisty sledding tracks for extra fun.
- 5:41Sledding is a great way for families and friends to enjoy
- 5:44the outdoors in winter. In Japan, there's a special
- 5:47tradition called Yukigasen, which is a snowball fighting
- 5:51competition. Teams face off in a big snowball
- 5:54battle with special rules and even referees.
- 5:57Yukigasen is played at festivals and teams wear helmets and have
- 6:01to follow safety rules. It started in a snowy town
- 6:05called Sobetsu in Hokkaido, and now there are tournaments in
- 6:08other countries too. Winter sports are not just for
- 6:11cold places. Did you know that in some warm
- 6:14countries, athletes train for winter sports using special
- 6:17equipment? For example, Jamaican athletes
- 6:20have competed in bobsledding even though Jamaica doesn't get
- 6:24snow. They train using wheeled sleds
- 6:26on tracks or travel to colder countries for practice.
- 6:30The Jamaican bobsled team became famous after their first
- 6:33appearance in the Winter Olympics in 1988.
- 6:36Some winter activities don't require any special gear at all.
- 6:40Building a snowman is a classic way to have fun in the snow.
- 6:43People all over the world roll up big balls of snow and stack
- 6:46them to make snowmen, adding things like scarves, hats and
- 6:50carrots for noses. Making snow angels is another
- 6:54favorite. Just lie down in the snow and
- 6:56move your arms and legs to leave an Angel shaped pattern.
- 7:00In Switzerland and Austria, people celebrate winter by
- 7:03holding festivals with music, food and traditional games.
- 7:07Sometimes there are ice carving contests where artists use
- 7:11chisels and saws to make amazing sculptures out of blocks of ice.
- 7:15Ice fishing is another winter activity that's popular in
- 7:18places like Canada, Russia and Scandinavia.
- 7:22People drill a hole in the ice on a frozen lake and fish
- 7:25through the hole. Sometimes families build small
- 7:28huts to stay warm while they fish.
- 7:31Ice fishing takes patience, but it's a way that people can enjoy
- 7:34nature and catch fish even when it's very cold outside.
- 7:38Winter sports are also a big part of the Paralympic Games,
- 7:42which are held after the Winter Olympics for athletes with
- 7:44disabilities. Some of the sports include para
- 7:47ice hockey, wheelchair curling, and Alpine skiing with special
- 7:51equipment. These athletes train hard and
- 7:54show that sports are for everyone, no matter what
- 7:57challenges they might face. There are also some unique
- 8:00winter activities in different cultures.
- 8:03In Russia, people celebrate Maslanitza, a festival that
- 8:07marks the end of winter, with sledding, snowball fights and
- 8:10eating pancakes. In China, the Harbin
- 8:14International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is famous for
- 8:17its giant ice castles and sculptures, which glow with
- 8:20colorful lights at night. Safety is very important in all
- 8:24winter sports and activities. People wear helmets and pads
- 8:28when skiing, snowboarding, or playing hockey.
- 8:31It's also important to dress warmly in layers, wear gloves,
- 8:35and protect your eyes from the bright sun reflecting off the
- 8:38snow. If you're ever trying a winter
- 8:40sport for the first time, it's a good idea to go with an adult or
- 8:43a coach who can teach you the basics and help you stay safe.
- 8:46Let's do a quick recap of what we've learned today.
- 8:49Winter sports and activities are a fun way to stay active when
- 8:52it's cold outside. Some of the most popular winter
- 8:55sports include ice skating, ice hockey, skiing, snowboarding,
- 8:59bobsledding, curling, and biathlon.
- 9:02There are also lots of ways to have fun in the snow, like
- 9:05sledding, building snowmen, and making snow angels.
- 9:09People all over the world have created special traditions and
- 9:12festivals to celebrate winter, from snowball battles in Japan
- 9:16to ice sculpture festivals in China.
- 9:18Winter sports are for everyone, and with the right gear and
- 9:21safety tips, they can be a great way to enjoy the season.
