- 0:01Have you ever had a Parkinson's symptom that nobody prepared you
- 0:03for? I remember reaching for my
- 0:05coffee one morning and realizing that my hand was ice cold while
- 0:09the rest of me felt fine. Well, today we're talking about
- 0:12the strange Parkinson's symptoms that you won't find in any
- 0:15textbook and stick around till the end because one of them
- 0:18completely changed how I manage my day-to-day.
- 0:22Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad,
- 0:26and the reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 0:30community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 0:35Hey friends, welcome back. It's always good to have you
- 0:38here. And if we haven't met yet, I'm
- 0:40Bryce and this is where we talk real life Parkinson's, the good,
- 0:44the bad and everything in between.
- 0:46I've been living with it for over 15 years now.
- 0:48So what you hear hear is straight from the trenches.
- 0:52The things that I wish someone had told me and the tips that
- 0:55might just make your day a little bit easier.
- 0:57But before we jump in, if you've experienced any strange
- 1:00Parkinson's symptoms yourself, let me know in the comments.
- 1:03Your experience might help somebody else realize that
- 1:05they're not alone in this. So today's program is the hidden
- 1:09Parkinson's symptoms that aren't in any textbooks, so let's dive
- 1:13right into it. So the first one showed up for
- 1:16me within the first few years of my diagnosis.
- 1:19Temperature changes in my limbs. You you just heard about my
- 1:24coffee mug story. The one of the first times I
- 1:26realized the Parkinson's was messing with my body temperature
- 1:29and my left hand felt like it had been in a freezer, while the
- 1:32rest was perfectly warm. You know, at first I thought
- 1:35maybe Carmen had secretly cranked up the AC just on my
- 1:38side of the bed as a joke, but it turns out, Nope, It's my
- 1:42nervous system being, well, nervous.
- 1:46So if you've experienced this, try light compression gloves or
- 1:50warming packs. You know it's not a cure, but at
- 1:52least you'll feel more like a human again and less like the
- 1:55side of like a side of frozen beef.
- 1:58Have you had this happen? Drop a yes in the comments so
- 2:01that I know that I'm not alone on this one.
- 2:04That one caught me off guard early on, but the next one
- 2:08didn't show up until about 8 years in.
- 2:10I was in the middle of reading an e-mail and and the text
- 2:13started to go blurry and double and I thought maybe I'd
- 2:16accidentally clicked on one of those settings that makes your
- 2:18screen easier to read for seniors.
- 2:20Sorry, Nope, just my eyes. Deciding to unionize now.
- 2:25If this happens, you need to let your neurologist know.
- 2:27OK, sometimes an eye doctor can tweak your glasses, your
- 2:31prescription, or you can recommend recommend simple
- 2:33exercises. And if you're like me, maybe
- 2:36avoid sending that important e-mail until things stop looking
- 2:40like a Magic Eye poster. Now, if that one surprised you,
- 2:44this next one is something that I didn't even know was connected
- 2:48to Parkinson's until it happened to me personally around 10 years
- 2:52in. You know, Carmen started asking
- 2:54me to speak up all the time. I'd answer her again, thinking
- 2:59that I was speaking louder and she'd still say it sounded
- 3:02exactly the same. So I'd go even louder.
- 3:05I feel in my mind, in my mind, I was almost like yelling.
- 3:09I was yelling at her. And she's like, no, it's still
- 3:12the exact same sound. And it was so confusing to me.
- 3:16And that's when it hit me. What I thought was loud wasn't
- 3:19loud at all to anyone else. Parkinson's was affecting the
- 3:23muscles that control my voice, and I had no clue whatsoever.
- 3:28So what did I do? I ended up starting speech
- 3:30therapy, the Lee Silverman voice treatment, you know, also known
- 3:34as the LSVT loud and Oh my gosh, did it make a massive difference
- 3:39in my life. It literally increased my
- 3:41decibels and it made my voice stronger.
- 3:44Right now listen, it took work, right?
- 3:47It takes a lot of work, but now I think I actually sound like, I
- 3:51think I sound, you know what I mean?
- 3:53And so that's the one thing I, I, I was wish I would have done
- 3:57that a lot sooner because I don't want to wait until I'm
- 4:01there, you know what I mean? I want to be ahead of these
- 4:03things. And so for speech therapy and
- 4:05those muscles that you need to work, you need to continually
- 4:09work them. This is to me filming these
- 4:11podcasts and doing everything that I'm doing, speaking is
- 4:15actually muscle work for me. It's actually you helping me.
- 4:18This was actually one of the things like when and, and you
- 4:21know, when I started filming these podcasts and do and
- 4:25recording podcasts and, and what not well about my Parkinson's
- 4:27journey. And I, I don't know if you know
- 4:30this or not, but it was just early 2025, like in January 2025
- 4:33that I started. So yeah, we've grown rather
- 4:36quickly and I'm so appreciative of that.
- 4:37But part of it was trying to find something that I was going
- 4:42to do, you know, when I retired and into retirement that was
- 4:45going to keep these muscles strong and keep keep my that the
- 4:48memory part of it and going. So it's kind of like therapy for
- 4:51me, right? And so I, I, I'm a big advocate
- 4:54of speech therapy. If you haven't taken speech
- 4:56therapy, look into it. Look into it now.
- 4:58Don't wait until it starts getting lower and lower.
- 5:00And if somebody around you has been noticing that you're
- 5:03talking lower, this is the best thing I can do.
- 5:05And you know, the best thing you can do.
- 5:06And you know what else it helps? It helps with swallowing.
- 5:09It helps with a lot of things. So I would highly, highly,
- 5:12highly recommend you look into something in your area or
- 5:14online. Yeah, anyway.
- 5:17And hey, if you like this kind of real life partisan talk,
- 5:20well, consider hitting subscribe.
- 5:21We do do releases three times a week, right?
- 5:25Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and we do a live on
- 5:27Sundays with my buddy Brian. And I'd love for you to be part
- 5:30of the conversation. So hit that subscribe button and
- 5:32ring the bell so you always know when we have something new
- 5:35coming out. So we have things coming out a
- 5:36lot. And by the way, everything we're
- 5:38talking about today is from is from Parkinson's itself.
- 5:43It's not from the medication side effects.
- 5:45OK, I want to be really clear about that.
- 5:46These are the things that you won't find in the pamphlet,
- 5:49right? But they can hit you just as
- 5:50hard. And remember, we're still
- 5:52heading towards that one that I mentioned at the start that
- 5:54completely changed how I managed my day.
- 5:56So make sure you stay tuned to that.
- 5:58So here's the next one. This next one started showing up
- 6:01for me just a few years ago, and that is drooling.
- 6:06Yeah, drooling. I've been mid conversation and
- 6:09suddenly realized that I've got a little Niagara Falls situation
- 6:11happening. It's it's not that you're
- 6:15producing more saliva, it's Parkinson's just slows the
- 6:19swallow reflex. OK, so some of the things you
- 6:22can do to help that are some sugar free gum, you know, or a
- 6:25mint can help remind your muscles to swallow.
- 6:29And if it's persistent, then make sure again, you talk to
- 6:31your neurologist about treatment options.
- 6:34And here's a little bonus, at least gum makes you look like
- 6:36you're thinking deeply instead of just leaking.
- 6:40Think about that. And if you want to talk about
- 6:43things like this without the whole world watching in the
- 6:46comments, that's exactly what we do in my inner circle community.
- 6:49It's a private, it's private, it's real, and it's a safe place
- 6:52to connect the links in the description for information
- 6:55about it. And I'd love to have you come
- 6:57over there. We are.
- 6:58We go deep, we go hard. It's a 24/7 community where you
- 7:01can post and interact with people just like you, from the
- 7:05newly diagnosed to people that have been living with it for
- 7:081520 years and for care partners as well.
- 7:11OK, so that last one was was awkward, right?
- 7:14But this next one, this is the one I told you about in the
- 7:17beginning, the one that completely changed how I manage
- 7:20my day. OK, picture this.
- 7:23I'm in the middle of a presentation.
- 7:24I'm talking away. I'm feeling pretty good when
- 7:28suddenly out of nowhere, I feel this like sharp twisting pain on
- 7:33on the side of my body. OK, So at first I tried to like,
- 7:37keep going. I'm thinking, OK, you know what?
- 7:39This is going to pass. But it doesn't.
- 7:42It actually gets worse. I have to stop mid sentence.
- 7:45I have to grip the podium. And I can see people in the
- 7:47front row exchanging that look, you know, that look like, do we
- 7:50clap? Do we call somebody?
- 7:52What's going on here? And here's the kicker.
- 7:56It wasn't a heart issue, it wasn't that I pulled a muscle.
- 8:01It was a cramp. A full on lock, you in place,
- 8:04nothing you can do about it. Muscle cramp.
- 8:07It locks so tight that I thought I needed a crowbar or maybe an
- 8:10exorcist. You know, that moment changed
- 8:13everything for me. It was unbelievable.
- 8:16And so now I schedule stretch breaks into my day kind of like
- 8:19clockwork, like alarms on my phone, non negotiable.
- 8:23And if I'm in a meeting, I'll step out for two minutes to
- 8:26move. It's one of the simplest changes
- 8:28that I've made, but it has had one of the biggest impacts on
- 8:31how I manage my Parkinson's. OK, before I share my Brycism of
- 8:35the day, I want to know what's the strangest Parkinson
- 8:39Parkinson's symptom that you've experienced?
- 8:41Drop it in the comments because you might help somebody else
- 8:44realize that they're not alone in how they're feeling as well.
- 8:48OK, here is your Brycism with Parkinson's.
- 8:52The symptoms you don't expect can sometimes change you the

- 9:26time like me with 15 years, or you're a care partner, check out
