- 0:01Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my

- 0:07And I will write upon him the name of my God and the name of
- 0:10the city of my God, which is New Jerusalem, which cometh down out
- 0:14of heaven from my God. And I will write upon him my new
- 0:18name. Hey listeners, this is Nick from
- 0:20Scripture Central and today's podcast addresses the question
- 0:24How do John's 7 letters reflect the ancient temple at the start
- 0:31of John's Revelation? John is instructed write the
- 0:34things which thou hast seen and the things which are and the
- 0:37things which shall be hereafter. The Revelation that begins with
- 0:427 brief letters to seven churches in the region around
- 0:45Ephesus that provide significant instructions from the Lord for
- 0:49these churches. These personalized letters in
- 0:52Revelation chapters 2 through three end with a promised
- 0:55blessing to those who overcome and remain true to their
- 0:58covenants with the Lord. Significantly, each of these
- 1:01promised blessings is drawn from the imagery and language of the
- 1:04ancient temple. As Breck England has observed,
- 1:08there is a ritual sequence to these promises which apply to
- 1:11All Saints for all time. Richard D Draper and Donald W
- 1:16Perry have also observed how each of these seven blessings
- 1:19relate to the Garden of Eden, which was itself established as
- 1:23a primal temple. Therefore, these blessings
- 1:25anticipate the end time when the elect will gain access to the
- 1:29temple in heaven and will return to the presence of the Father,
- 1:32being welcomed back into his presence forevermore.
- 1:36For example, the letter to the Church of Ephesus promises that
- 1:39to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the Tree of Life
- 1:43which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.
- 1:46The Tree of Life was one of the central trees in the Garden of
- 1:49Eden, and Adam and Eve were forbidden from partaking of its
- 1:52fruit. Following the Fall, the Tree of
- 1:55Life would continue to play an important role in the Temple, as
- 1:58the Menorah served as a representation of the Tree of
- 2:01Life with its seven branches. Therefore, as Draper and Perry
- 2:05observe, John's imagery suggests that the only way to reach this
- 2:09tree, and thus eternal life, is by going to the Temple.
- 2:13In effect, the Tree of Life suggests that the fall of Adam
- 2:16has been surmounted. Spiritual death can no longer
- 2:20claim the individual who obeys God.
- 2:22Similarly, Richard D Draper and Michael D Rhodes also note that
- 2:27Jewish tradition held that partaking of the fruit of the
- 2:29tree was the reward for all those who achieved everlasting
- 2:33life as the righteous return to the Paradise of God and enjoy
- 2:38his presence. Another clear reference to the
- 2:40temple ordinances and its blessings can be found in the
- 2:44Lord's blessing to the church at Sardis.
- 2:46He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white
- 2:50raiment, and I will not blot out his name out of the book of
- 2:53life, but I will confess his name before my Father and before
- 2:58his angels. The reception of new sacred
- 3:01clothing is a key aspect to temple worship, both ancient and
- 3:05modern. These sacred garments are
- 3:07connected to a variety of significant meanings in the
- 3:10scriptures and allow Saints to emulate exalted beings in
- 3:13preparation for entering the Lord's presence.
- 3:16Indeed, Revelation Chapter 3, verse 4 promises that the
- 3:20righteous will walk with me in white.
- 3:23As Draper and Rhodes have observed, echoes of temple
- 3:27worship can be heard, for it is in those holy buildings as one
- 3:31wears white and enters into vicarious saving work that he or
- 3:35she walks with God. These sacred garments can also
- 3:39be traced back to the Garden of Eden.
- 3:42Before being expelled from Eden unto Adam also, and to his wife,
- 3:46did the Lord make coats, garments of skins, and clothed
- 3:51them. After Adam and Eve received
- 3:53these garments, the Lord declared, Behold, the man has
- 3:57become as one of us now, knowing good and evil, and being clothed
- 4:01in sacred garments. Finally, another noteworthy
- 4:05parallel is found in the Lord's promise to the churches in
- 4:07Philadelphia and Pergamos Him that overcometh will I make a
- 4:11pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out.
- 4:16And I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of
- 4:20the city of my God, which is New Jerusalem, which cometh down out
- 4:24of heaven from my God, And I will write upon him my new name.
- 4:29Similarly the Lord will also give him a whitestone, and in
- 4:33the stone a new name written which no man knoweth, saving he
- 4:37that received it. This is similar to the Lord
- 4:40naming Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden in the day that
- 4:43God created man and the likeness of God made he him male and
- 4:47female, created he them and blessed them and called their
- 4:51name Adam. The reception of new sacred
- 4:54names draws on coronation rituals throughout the ancient
- 4:58Near East, which typically took place in a temple precinct.
- 5:01In many cases, multiple names were given to a new king,
- 5:05reminiscent of the divine names given to the future Messiah in
- 5:08Isaiah Chapter 9, verse 6, and the multiple names given to the
- 5:12temple petitioner in these two verses.
- 5:15Additionally, the coronation of some biblical kings was also
- 5:19connected to a pillar in the temple, which served as a
- 5:22functional symbol of royal stability and hence the
- 5:25institution of kingship. As such, the temple petitioner
- 5:29who keeps their covenants are ultimately promised by these
- 5:32blessings to become kings and Queens in the Kingdom of heaven.
- 5:36Throughout his seven letters, John addresses these seven
- 5:39churches collectively against the imminent dangers of
- 5:41apostasy. As noted by Draper and Perry,
- 5:44apostasy was running full steam, fueled by false prophets and
- 5:48apostles. Entire branches were ignorantly
- 5:51or willfully being overrun by it.
- 5:54The message to the churches sounded a clear warning that God
- 5:58would abandoned them unless they returned to him.
- 6:00Only by remembering and staying true to their temple covenants
- 6:04can the Saints then and now survive turbulent times, avoid
- 6:09the pains of the second death, and hope to return to the
- 6:12presence of God? Well, we are not necessarily
- 6:15faced with exactly the same challenges faced by the ancient
- 6:19church. We will likewise find ourselves
- 6:22in need of the Lord's guidance and blessings that come through
- 6:25the covenants we have made with Him in holy temples.
- 6:29As recently explained by Elder Dale G Renland, keeping
- 6:32covenants made in baptismal fonts and in temples also
- 6:36provides us with strength to withstand mortality's trials and
- 6:39heartaches. The doctor associated with these
- 6:42covenants eases our way and provides hope, comfort, and
- 6:46peace. Ultimately, those who overcome
- 6:50all trials and remain faithful to the Lord will be heirs of the
- 6:53ultimate blessing to Him that overcometh will I grant to sit
- 6:58with me in my throne, even as I also overcame and am sit down
- 7:03with my Father in His throne. This final blessing, the promise
- 7:07of living with God and becoming like Him, is our ultimate goal
- 7:12as we strive to draw closer to our Father in heaven.
- 7:15Ultimately, through the temple we can gain this and all other
- 7:20promised blessings as we strive to draw nearer to Him.
