- 0:25engineering, developing a nuclear fusion rocket engine.
- 0:30Now this technology aims to fuse 2 lighter atoms together to
- 0:33create a heavier atom, releasing an enormous amount of energy in
- 0:37the process. And the result of this?
- 0:39It's a journey to Mars that could potentially be completed
- 0:42in half the time currently achievable by Spacex's Starship.
- 0:47Furthermore, Pulsar Fusion is pioneering the use of artificial
- 0:50intelligence in the realm of space propulsion technology.
- 0:53Collaborating with Princeton Satellite Systems, Pulsar Fusion
- 0:57is using machine learning simulations to predict and
- 1:00control the behavior of super heated plasma under
- 1:03electromagnetic confinement, an essential part of their fusion
- 1:07based engine. Now while SpaceX has made
- 1:09significant strides under Musk's leadership, Pulsar Fusion's
- 1:13innovative approach could revolutionize our understanding

- 1:26An ambitious British startup is breaking new ground in the
- 1:28aerospace sector with a game changing approach to space
- 1:31propulsion. A Pulsar fusion is at the
- 1:33forefront of developing a nuclear fusion rocket engine
- 1:37that could potentially have the journey time to Mars.
- 1:41Based in Bletchley, England, Pulsar Fusion is committed to
- 1:43developing a propulsion system that can reach speeds upwards of
- 1:48500,000 mph or 805,000 kilometers per hour, and it will
- 1:53endure the most scorching temperatures in the solar
- 1:56system. At the heart of this venture
- 1:58lies nuclear fusion. This is the same reaction that
- 2:01powers our sun and gives it is tremendous energy.
- 2:05Nuclear fusion is a process within two lighter atoms
- 2:08combined under high temperature and pressure conditions to form
- 2:12a heavier atom, releasing huge amounts of energy in the
- 2:16process. The scientists globally have
- 2:18lauded the potential of this near limitless 0 carbon energy
- 2:22source as the potential successor to fossil fuels.
- 2:25Ironically, the applications of nuclear fusion as a game changer
- 2:29in our quest for cleaner energy might first be demonstrated in
- 2:33the depths of deep space before we can fully harness it on our
- 2:36home planet of Earth. Now space is the ideal
- 2:40environment for fusion with its vacuum conditions and the
- 2:43extreme cold, says Richard Dinan, the CEO of Pulsar Fusion.
- 2:48He said contrary to a ground based fusion power station,
- 2:51fusion propulsion for space doesn't require an enormous
- 2:54steam turbine. And if you can be sourced
- 2:56externally rather than being manufactured on site, Dinan
- 3:00plans to channel this energy directly into the engine to
- 3:03achieve propulsion, a goal he believes is attainable within a
- 3:06short timeline of just about four years.
- 3:09And the technical challenges are immense.
- 3:12But the team at Pulsar Fusion remains undeterred.
- 3:16The primary challenge lies in successfully confining the Super
- 3:19heated plasma within an electromagnetic field, explains
- 3:23Doctor James Lambert, chief Financial officer at Pulsar
- 3:27Fusion. He adds the plasma behaves much
- 3:29like a weather system, unpredictable and hard to
- 3:32control under conventional techniques.
- 3:35Now, as the plasma heats up to hundreds of millions of degrees,
- 3:38your reaction simply ceases due to the turbulence.
- 3:41However, recent scientific breakthroughs have propelled
- 3:44this concept closer to reality. In December and milestone was
- 3:48reached with the first fusion reaction that produced more
- 3:50energy than it took to initiate, a feat hailed as one of the most
- 3:55impressive scientific achievements of the 21st
- 3:57century. Now, encouraged by these
- 3:59advances and the promise of artificial intelligence, Pulsar
- 4:02Fusion is collaborating with Princeton Satellite Systems
- 4:05based in the US, to simulate and predict plasma behavior under
- 4:09electromagnetic confinement. These AI guided machine learning
- 4:13simulations will inform the rocket engines design process
- 4:16and Pulsar Fusion's roadmap includes demonstrating that the
- 4:19rocket can achieve fusion temperatures by 2027.
- 4:22If successful, this would represent a significant step
- 4:25towards the world's first commercially viable fusion based
- 4:28engine, they said. Our technology could have
- 4:31mission times to Mars and reduce the flight time to Saturn from 8
- 4:35years to just two. Ultimately, it could empower
- 4:39humanity to venture beyond our solar system.
- 4:42We're going to be shifting our focus to X or Twitter.
- 4:46Let's call it Twitter for now. Twitter's freshly minted X
- 4:49symbol has hastily removed from its San Francisco headquarters
- 4:53on Monday, following city official stern reproach for its
- 4:56unpermitted installation. The massive attention grabbing
- 5:00sign set high above Twitter's building began to flash its
- 5:04presence last week, part of the social media giants latest
- 5:07rebranding effort. So the San Francisco Department
- 5:10of Building Inspection cited the company after receiving a flurry
- 5:13of 24 complaints, flagging concerns about the structure
- 5:17safety in the glare of its intense illumination.
- 5:20City regulations demand a building permit for the
- 5:23insulation and even the dismantling of such a sign, a
- 5:26stipulation overlooked by Twitter.
- 5:28Yet due to immediate safety concerns, the removal was
- 5:31permitted to proceed, as confirmed by Patrick Hannon, the
- 5:35department spokesperson to NPR. Now the conflict comes on the
- 5:38heels of sweeping changes announced by Twitter just last
- 5:41week. The removal, which came less
- 5:43than three days after an initial visit by a city inspector to
- 5:47Twitter's headquarters on Friday, indicates escalating
- 5:49tensions between the tech company and the city.
- 5:52The inspector responding to the city's complaint was called to
- 5:55evaluate the controversial rooftop signs adherence to city
- 5:58codes. The company's response was less
- 6:01than accommodating, with a Twitter representative denying
- 6:04the inspector access. The representative, however,
- 6:07stated that the structure was a temporary lighted sign for an
- 6:10event, only to be countered by the inspectors firm declaration
- 6:14that an unpermitted signage must be taken down.
- 6:18Repeated attempts at inspection were met with continued
- 6:21resistance. The second visit to the
- 6:23headquarters on Saturday resulted in another denied
- 6:26request for rooftop access. Twitter as of yet has not
- 6:31responded for requests for comment.
- 6:33Elon Musk, the current Twitter owner, however, offered a cheeky
- 6:37response to a tweet claiming San Francisco authorities were
- 6:39attempting to strong arm the removal of the X sign.
- 6:43Musk replied with a laughing, crying emoji, a dismissal of the
- 6:48ongoing drama. Now, this isn't the first
- 6:50encounter of regulatory friction of Twitter in recent days.
- 6:54The company faced reprimands from San Francisco with city
- 6:56officials last Monday for removing its original signage,
- 6:59which featured its name and I Bluebird logo, without securing
- 7:03the necessary permits. Furthermore, the city criticized
- 7:06the company for neglecting pedestrian safety measures such
- 7:10as sectioning off the sidewalk during the removal process.
- 7:13The current clash underscores A fraught relationship between the
- 7:16social media Titan and it's host city as it embarks on its bold
