- 0:07Speaker 1: Holiday Wishless Time.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yes, it's Eric Kratz and Kevin Plaar, Santa's favorite helpers
- 0:12Speaker 2: and Krats. Since you have the exact hat on that
- 0:15Speaker 2: we were looking for and KP's is a little more bad, Santa,
- 0:20Speaker 2: we are going to let you set the table here.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It's a very simple game. It's a wish list three teams,
- 0:26Speaker 2: one item per team that you would like to see
- 0:29Speaker 2: done this holiday season, which at this point will likely
- 0:32Speaker 2: occur in January.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Hopefully because we're not unwrapping any of these gifts yet.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Although we could do a little show if the Yankees
- 0:41Speaker 3: signed tatsuy L My here before Christmas before New Year's
- 0:46Speaker 3: but I'll come back on for that because I think
- 0:49Speaker 3: there is no larger move in the American League East
- 0:53Speaker 3: than that the Yankees are not going to have two
- 0:56Speaker 3: of their horses to start the season. And if the
- 0:59Speaker 3: Yankees want to keep up with the Blue Jays, the
- 1:02Speaker 3: Orioles who are doing things the Red Sox, well, they
- 1:06Speaker 3: haven't traded or haven't signed a big league free agent.
- 1:09Speaker 3: They've traded for everybody that they've gotten and keep up
- 1:13Speaker 3: in this division. To me, I think it's Tatsuyo My
- 1:17Speaker 3: or nobody on the pitching front. I'm not saying they're
- 1:20Speaker 3: not going to go after the other guys at Gallon,
- 1:22Speaker 3: I think he'd pitch great in New York, all that stuff,
- 1:24Speaker 3: But I just think Tatsuyo my is the guy that
- 1:28Speaker 3: is a scary look in ealth. It might be a
- 1:31Speaker 3: bad Elf, but if you remember the movie Elf, you know,
- 1:34Speaker 3: an angry Elf. That's what that looks like. But katel
- 1:38Speaker 3: Marte for Seattle is my second thing on the wish list.
- 1:40Speaker 3: We talked about it earlier, but for everybody just listening
- 1:44Speaker 3: to just this, katel Marte will make the Mariners the
- 1:48Speaker 3: best team in the American League. In my opinion, they
- 1:51Speaker 3: will be a better team than the Blue Jays because
- 1:54Speaker 3: of what that how that shapes their team because they
- 1:59Speaker 3: have the pitch advantage over the Jays, and that would
- 2:02Speaker 3: add something to their lineup that now takes a little
- 2:06Speaker 3: bit more pressure off of Julio. I think anything that
- 2:08Speaker 3: takes pressure off of Julio from being the man, he
- 2:11Speaker 3: becomes more of the man. So I think that would
- 2:14Speaker 3: be the top on the Christmas wish list and the
- 2:19Speaker 3: wish list for Boston Alex Bregman. They've already done their work.
- 2:24Speaker 3: They have their first baseman and Wilson Contreres, who's going
- 2:27Speaker 3: to add a lot of value, way more value than
- 2:30Speaker 3: their first baseman's added last year, and he's actually played
- 2:33Speaker 3: a good first base. Alex Bregman, all the young guys
- 2:37Speaker 3: on the team are definitely coming back. Everybody knows that.
- 2:41Speaker 3: The biggest thing is you can't let him go to
- 2:43Speaker 3: another American League team, and so that's one of the
- 2:45Speaker 3: reasons you sign them. But also these young guys, each
- 2:48Speaker 3: year is a different step in your development. And if
- 2:51Speaker 3: you can bring Alex Bregman back, that gives these guys
- 2:55Speaker 3: another year. Talking to Alex, hey remember this making this
- 2:59Speaker 3: connection and it's probably gonna be five to six years,
- 3:03Speaker 3: and all these young guys are going to be here
- 3:04Speaker 3: for five to six more years. And you know, Roman
- 3:08Speaker 3: Anthony he has his extension, Marcel Meyer doesn't, Sedey and
- 3:13Speaker 3: Rafaela he's he's going to be locked in with this team.
- 3:16Speaker 3: So it's like Alex, we're going to do this together.
- 3:19Speaker 3: He can be the unk for all these guys. He
- 3:22Speaker 3: can continue to help them when they make it farther
- 3:25Speaker 3: into playoffs. Hey, I know you guys weren't here last year.
- 3:29Speaker 3: But this round of the playoffs is exactly the same.
- 3:32Speaker 3: So to me, I think he is maybe the most
- 3:36Speaker 3: needed player needed position player for a team, and I
- 3:40Speaker 3: think Tatsuyo Mai is the most needed pitcher for a
- 3:43Speaker 3: team in the America of the three teams, of any
- 3:46Speaker 3: of the teams that are out there yet looking for help.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Do you think that the starting pitching market is held
- 3:55Speaker 2: up due to the fact that Dylan Ceeese got a
- 3:59Speaker 2: very healthy and it might have elevated what the ask
- 4:03Speaker 2: or what the thought process was for reps for the
- 4:06Speaker 2: other top tier starters available, and they're not going to
- 4:10Speaker 2: get that might not be the best example. I do
- 4:13Speaker 2: think he is going to end up with close to
- 4:15Speaker 2: that level money. But then there's that Ran Bervaldes Ranger
- 4:20Speaker 2: Suarez group.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I mean, I haven't seen the movement there. Usually you
- 4:26Speaker 2: see the one move KP and then it's like, okay,
- 4:29Speaker 2: here we go. Things were set, but Dylan C's got
- 4:33Speaker 2: the bag from the Blue Jays and then everything is
- 4:35Speaker 2: just kind of halted since then for the free agent
- 4:37Speaker 2: starting pitching market, And if anything, we've seen some trades
- 4:41Speaker 2: on that front that have been created for teams that
- 4:44Speaker 2: are like, I'm not playing in those waters.
- 4:46Speaker 1: You know, I'm not playing one point eight for this starter,
- 4:50Speaker 1: for that starter.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I'm going to trade some prospect capital and fill the
- 4:53Speaker 2: gap that way, And that's smart.
- 4:55Speaker 1: If they feel that way.
- 4:57Speaker 4: We might look back and the Dylan C's move to
- 5:00Speaker 4: Toronto might be a great deal. It might be a
- 5:03Speaker 4: lower deal, a discounted deal, you know, so good for
- 5:05Speaker 4: Dylan Cees for I always think when you were a
- 5:08Speaker 4: free agent of that caliber and you're gonna get kind
- 5:11Speaker 4: of in that ballpark, you know at that point as
- 5:13Speaker 4: an extra twenty million dollars that significant for someone. Maybe
- 5:16Speaker 4: it is, maybe it isn't, But at least Dylan SE's
- 5:19Speaker 4: got to choose the team he wanted to go to.
- 5:21Speaker 4: He was the first one to come out sign his deal.
- 5:25Speaker 4: And I definitely think it's affecting the market for a
- 5:27Speaker 4: lot of these guys.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I think that's the high end.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I think it's ceasin ami, and then I think the
- 5:32Speaker 2: rest of the group's going to place below that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And how much below that is the question.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I think right now that you've got back and forth
- 5:41Speaker 2: with teams and agents, but we'll see what do you have?
- 5:43Speaker 1: What's your list?
- 5:44Speaker 4: Looking like my Christmas list. Okay, you know, you know
- 5:47Speaker 4: I'm going to start with the Blue Jays, and I'm
- 5:48Speaker 4: going to kind of piggyback on what Kratzy was saying about,
- 5:51Speaker 4: you know, bringing Alex Bregman back and just kind of
- 5:54Speaker 4: being in this together and building something together. I think
- 5:57Speaker 4: the number one thing the Blue Jays need to do
- 6:00Speaker 4: is bring back Bobashett. I know there's a lot of
- 6:03Speaker 4: talk about Kyle Tucker, and maybe Kyle Tucker is a
- 6:05Speaker 4: better player than Boba Schett, but Bobashett is a homegrown player.
- 6:10Speaker 4: He's one of vladig Mar Guerrero's best friend. They've done
- 6:13Speaker 4: this together. I think the only thing kind of going
- 6:16Speaker 4: against them bringing back Bobaschett is they showed that they
- 6:20Speaker 4: could kind of do it without him down the stretch.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I don't think they're in that position without Bobaschhett, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 4: playing ninety percent of the season. And I also think
- 6:29Speaker 4: just Bobaschett fits better in their lineup because I do
- 6:32Speaker 4: love Ernie Clement, I do love Addison Barger. If you
- 6:35Speaker 4: go out and sign a Kyle Tucker, you know, one
- 6:39Speaker 4: of those guys are out of a position. So I
- 6:41Speaker 4: do like Bobashett if he's willing to play second base
- 6:44Speaker 4: for the Cleveland Guardians. They all I see on MLB
- 6:47Speaker 4: trade rumors and on x and all these social platforms
- 6:51Speaker 4: is their need for a right handed hitting outfielder. Nick
- 6:54Speaker 4: Castianos needs a new home. He no longer has a
- 6:56Speaker 4: home in Philadelphia. Can they get him pennies on the dollar,
- 6:59Speaker 4: which Cleveland loves to do. And I know Cleveland probably
- 7:02Speaker 4: has some prospect capital they could, you know, return for
- 7:05Speaker 4: a guy like Nick Castiano's. But you talk about someone
- 7:08Speaker 4: who plays the game almost angry at the field, who
- 7:11Speaker 4: comes from a winning culture and environment, and also maybe
- 7:15Speaker 4: going from an environment in Philly where it's a little
- 7:18Speaker 4: bit more I don't want to say lacks of days ago,
- 7:20Speaker 4: but maybe a little bit less structured, and it feels
- 7:23Speaker 4: like Cleveland with a guy like Jose Ramirez at the
- 7:25Speaker 4: head of it, Stephen Vote at the head of it,
- 7:28Speaker 4: maybe they could find the best version at Nick Castiano's.
- 7:31Speaker 4: And lastly, for the Detroit Tigers, I think they need
- 7:34Speaker 4: to go out and sign Zach Gallen. They already have
- 7:36Speaker 4: the best picture in the world. Zach Callen has shown
- 7:39Speaker 4: the ability to be an ace. He would be a
- 7:41Speaker 4: great h you know, guy writing shotgun for Trek Scubele
- 7:45Speaker 4: and allow the Tigers to maybe finish what they had started,
- 7:49Speaker 4: knowing that Trek Scooble is a free agent at the
- 7:51Speaker 4: end of the year and maybe he becomes the replacement
- 7:54Speaker 4: of Trek Scuoble ends up, you know, walking at the
- 7:56Speaker 4: end of the year. I love Zach Gallen and what
- 7:58Speaker 4: he's able to potentially do. Much different ballpark pitching in
- 8:02Speaker 4: Detroit than it is, you know, in the America or
- 8:05Speaker 4: the National League West. That entire division is a little
- 8:08Speaker 4: bit more pitcher friendly. So I think Zach Gallon has
- 8:10Speaker 4: a lot in the tank, and you know, maybe he
- 8:12Speaker 4: can learn a little bit from Trek Scuobell and the
- 8:14Speaker 4: other guys around him, and they already have a pretty
- 8:17Speaker 4: good rotation. But I think this could be, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 4: number two that you're looking for in that rotation.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Creative. I like it.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Remember they did something similar with Jack Flaherty. You give
- 8:28Speaker 2: him some money, you give him the opt out possibility.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Jack didn't take it. I think that's what it's going
- 8:34Speaker 2: to take for Zach Gallen. Michael King ends up with
- 8:37Speaker 2: three years, seventy five million. The first year of that
- 8:40Speaker 2: deal is I think about twenty two million, and then
- 8:43Speaker 2: ideally for him, he shoves this year and he opts
- 8:46Speaker 2: out and he gets much more for the padres. If
- 8:49Speaker 2: he shoves, great, that worked out probably as a year
- 8:53Speaker 2: that where he was worth double right if he ends
- 8:55Speaker 2: up being the guy that he is for Zach Gallen,
- 8:58Speaker 2: if he looks more like the last two months of
- 8:59Speaker 2: the season, Zach Gallen, probably the same thing. So I
- 9:04Speaker 2: think Detroit could craft something KP that makes sense for
- 9:08Speaker 2: both sides. It puts Gallon in a spot where he
- 9:10Speaker 2: gets a little bit of the added security, maybe it's
- 9:12Speaker 2: an extra year or two, and then he still gets
- 9:15Speaker 2: the twenty some odd million dollars to pitch next year
- 9:18Speaker 2: and go back into free agency.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Yeah. When I thought of it, I thought exactly of
- 9:22Speaker 4: the Jack Flarity deal. Like, you know, you know, he
- 9:25Speaker 4: he he didn't have the best year going into free agency,
- 9:28Speaker 4: but you know, let's give him a good amount of
- 9:30Speaker 4: money with the opt out. If he performs great, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 4: he'll walk. If he doesn't. You know, Jack Flarity, I
- 9:37Speaker 4: forget what he's making. He's probably making what somewhere around
- 9:39Speaker 4: twenty million dollars the next couple of years. I believe
- 9:42Speaker 4: he has the ability to bounce back and be the
- 9:44Speaker 4: Jack Flarity that we saw two years ago. So it's
- 9:47Speaker 4: just a great signing, and I feel like Detroit's been
- 9:49Speaker 4: able to do that with a guy like Flarity. Go
- 9:52Speaker 4: and do it with Zach Gallen.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, opted back in for twenty mil. By the way, Kratz,
- 9:57Speaker 2: yes for Flarity.
- 10:00Speaker 3: My question to you the Bobashette one, I'm not saying
- 10:03Speaker 3: that Blue Jays shouldn't bring him back. I'm saying you said,
- 10:08Speaker 3: have him play second base. Do you think if you
- 10:11Speaker 3: bring back your shortstop on shortstop money, they'd be okay
- 10:16Speaker 3: playing him at second base because he's been the blue
- 10:18Speaker 3: Jays shortstop or do they just have to steer clear
- 10:22Speaker 3: of that because they don't see him as a shortstop
- 10:24Speaker 3: anymore because Andre Samenez is a big league shortstop. They
- 10:28Speaker 3: brought him in. I think partially the reason you took
- 10:32Speaker 3: on his large contract from the Guardians was because you
- 10:36Speaker 3: know he can play shortstop in the big leagues and
- 10:38Speaker 3: Bo was leaving. So if you bring Bo back, do
- 10:41Speaker 3: you think the Blue Jays have enough khones to say
- 10:45Speaker 3: thanks for playing shortstop for us for the last six
- 10:47Speaker 3: years go to second base.
- 10:50Speaker 4: I mean, I think money talks. I think if they
- 10:52Speaker 4: pay him like a shortstop and they play him at
- 10:54Speaker 4: second base, I think, if they if there's ever an organization,
- 10:58Speaker 4: you know, in my opinion, being there being around him,
- 11:01Speaker 4: if they could present a case through whatever sort of
- 11:04Speaker 4: data that they have that is going to get the
- 11:06Speaker 4: best version of Bobishet playing second base, whether it's the
- 11:10Speaker 4: health on his legs or his ability to play longer
- 11:13Speaker 4: and make more money, however they want to sell him
- 11:15Speaker 4: on it. I get your point, though, it is very difficult.
- 11:18Speaker 4: If I was in a situation like that where I
- 11:21Speaker 4: was a team's everyday center fielder and I thought of
- 11:23Speaker 4: myself as a center fielder, and I'm just thinking out
- 11:26Speaker 4: loud as I'm looking behind you. They did it with
- 11:28Speaker 4: Brandon Nimo. They signed him as a center fielder shortly
- 11:31Speaker 4: after they moved into left field, and I know that's
- 11:34Speaker 4: in the Marcus Simeon kind of the same thing. They
- 11:36Speaker 4: signed him as a short step playing him at second base.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I know those guys have kind of flipped off, But
- 11:40Speaker 4: I think, ultimately, if you sign him as a shortstop
- 11:44Speaker 4: to play second base, in terms of shortstop money, I
- 11:47Speaker 4: don't think there's a big deal with it.
- 11:50Speaker 2: This is going to sound so annoying, but I'm going
- 11:53Speaker 2: to explain how this gets calculated By at least half
- 11:56Speaker 2: the front offices in baseball, if not more, they have
- 12:00Speaker 2: either win's above replacement or a version of that to
- 12:02Speaker 2: calculate value for a player and projections. Right, we talk
- 12:06Speaker 2: about this pretty frequently, Kratz. It's thisten anti numbers. It's
- 12:09Speaker 2: actually just explaining how things are looked at the way
- 12:13Speaker 2: that Let's use say, Fangrafts values war per one hundred
- 12:18Speaker 2: and sixty two games at shortstop versus second base. It's
- 12:21Speaker 2: about five run difference, and ten runs equals one win,
- 12:27Speaker 2: so that's about a half of a win difference. Let's say,
- 12:31Speaker 2: and again teams value this differently too, a win is
- 12:34Speaker 2: worth what crats ten million bucks. It's not exactly like that,
- 12:37Speaker 2: because obviously if a player is a five win player,
- 12:39Speaker 2: it's fifty. But on the pre agent market, yeah, let's
- 12:43Speaker 2: just say that, right, it gets used as a guide.
- 12:46Speaker 2: They're essentially saying that they should dock five million dollars
- 12:50Speaker 2: per year over the length of the contract. In terms
- 12:55Speaker 2: of the value of Bobashet. Now that's not the way
- 12:58Speaker 2: a free market works, but that is the way that
- 13:01Speaker 2: most teams come up with the same numbers for the
- 13:04Speaker 2: same players.
- 13:05Speaker 1: How did I do with explaining that.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Spot on and you said a free market, how about
- 13:11Speaker 3: a market with collusion, because everybody knows the number and
- 13:15Speaker 3: formula you just put in, and that's how they're looking
- 13:18Speaker 3: at him. And that is unfair to Boba Schett. Yes
- 13:22Speaker 3: he said it. He said, I will play second base,
- 13:25Speaker 3: but you know what else he said. It's like that
- 13:27Speaker 3: kid who's like, yeah, I'm not lying, and they pulls
- 13:30Speaker 3: his fingers out, like yeah you could. I'll play second base,
- 13:34Speaker 3: but you're paying me as a shortstop, Like don't, don't,
- 13:37Speaker 3: don't look at me as a second baseman. But I'm
- 13:40Speaker 3: willing to do whatever. It's just like Josh Hater said,
- 13:44Speaker 3: I'm a closer. I'm gonna throw one inning. You sign me,
- 13:48Speaker 3: Huston Ashros, I'll throw two or three innings, whatever you want,
- 13:51Speaker 3: because I'm signed. Same thing with Boba Schett. Sign me
- 13:55Speaker 3: for what I've done because that's the only thing that
- 13:57Speaker 3: you can do. You don't know what my f is
- 14:00Speaker 3: gonna be. And if you want to play me in
- 14:02Speaker 3: left field, I'll figure it out. Like I don't think
- 14:04Speaker 3: Boba Schet's going My legacy is as a shortstop. No,
- 14:09Speaker 3: his legacy is the fact that he made it to
- 14:11Speaker 3: a place where only ten percent of big league players
- 14:14Speaker 3: ever make it to, and that's free agency to get
- 14:18Speaker 3: a large, long term deal. So he played shortstop his
- 14:22Speaker 3: entire time. You want him to play second base, and
- 14:25Speaker 3: you think his bat and his hundred RBIs that he's
- 14:27Speaker 3: gonna bring you in close to three hundred batting average
- 14:29Speaker 3: are enough, you're gonna have to pay him as a shortstop. Sorry,
- 14:32Speaker 3: that's the that's just the reality of life.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Yeah, his real legacy is in the batter's box. So yeah,
- 14:39Speaker 4: that's what you're paying for your painting out to go
- 14:41Speaker 4: go to. You're playing him to step up to home
- 14:43Speaker 4: plate six hundred times a year. You can pencil him
- 14:47Speaker 4: in for three hundred you know, close to two hundred hits.
- 14:51Speaker 4: He's gonna drive in one hundred runs. You know whether
- 14:53Speaker 4: you want to play him at short step, second base,
- 14:55Speaker 4: left field, right field. And I love your point. We
- 14:57Speaker 4: as an industry always want you and I know you
- 15:00Speaker 4: have to do it. When you're paying players' money, you're
- 15:03Speaker 4: trying to predict what the player is going to do out,
- 15:05Speaker 4: but no one knows what the future holds. Really, you're
- 15:07Speaker 4: paying for someone for what they had done in the past,
- 15:09Speaker 4: and what he had done in the past is play shortstop,
- 15:12Speaker 4: So you have to pay him as a shortstop, which
- 15:14Speaker 4: if the Blue G's are willing to do and move
- 15:17Speaker 4: him to second base, they'll do it.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Let me present the other side. Why am I paying
- 15:25Speaker 2: you shortstop money? If you're going to be a second baseman,
- 15:29Speaker 2: either moving forward or for the majority of the deal.
- 15:32Speaker 3: That's your choice. That's your choice because now you're starting
- 15:36Speaker 3: to get in. That's a team's choice to do that.
- 15:39Speaker 3: And if that's the case, then you don't want him.
- 15:41Speaker 3: You don't want his hundred RBIs and two hundred hits.
- 15:44Speaker 3: I do.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I do want him.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I want him at second base because I think that
- 15:48Speaker 2: he can be an above average defender at second base
- 15:51Speaker 2: where he is a below average defender at shortstop, and
- 15:54Speaker 2: I think that will make my team best. And then
- 15:57Speaker 2: the call also includes a little is there any other
- 16:01Speaker 2: team that is signing you as a shortstop?
- 16:03Speaker 1: Maybe there isn't.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Let me ask you this question. So we're talking years
- 16:07Speaker 4: in money, what's the difference between Bobashet as a graded
- 16:11Speaker 4: out bad defender at shortstop or a plus defender at
- 16:16Speaker 4: second base? Like, what does that formula look like?
- 16:20Speaker 3: Right? It's big. I'm gonna go.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I'm gonna go, like, just physically standing at shortstop and
- 16:26Speaker 4: being a bad defender at shortstop as opposed to being
- 16:29Speaker 4: a plus defender at second base is gonna cost him
- 16:32Speaker 4: that much?
- 16:33Speaker 3: I mean, you're talking about the difference in I know
- 16:37Speaker 3: it's an age and I just got this real quick,
- 16:39Speaker 3: but the difference in Marcus Simeon's contract and Corey Seger's
- 16:42Speaker 3: son contract. Cory Seger got more years, but Marcus Simeon
- 16:46Speaker 3: gets one hundred and seventy five million and Cory Seger
- 16:49Speaker 3: gets three hundred plus. So the industry rates it like that.
- 16:53Speaker 3: The industry rates like that.
- 16:55Speaker 4: I don't think they're comparable players. I think Corey Seeger
- 16:58Speaker 4: is much. You know, they're not, you know, but I'm
- 17:03Speaker 4: just trying to figure out what, you know, if I'm
- 17:06Speaker 4: a team and I'm like, Okay, yeah, I could pay
- 17:08Speaker 4: him X amount to play shortstop, but it's not He's
- 17:11Speaker 4: not going to be a great defender at short throughout
- 17:13Speaker 4: the bat, the base running all the other things, but
- 17:16Speaker 4: he can be plus at second base, which in a
- 17:19Speaker 4: short time during the postseason he showed his ability to
- 17:21Speaker 4: play a great second base. I'm just trying to figure
- 17:24Speaker 4: that out because I don't know if there's really been
- 17:26Speaker 4: a comparable. I mean, Marcus Simeon is probably the most
- 17:29Speaker 4: obvious comparable going from shortstop to second But if Marcus
- 17:33Speaker 4: Simons stayed at shortstop, who was not a great shortstop
- 17:37Speaker 4: in terms of his metrics, I don't think he's getting
- 17:40Speaker 4: Corey Seger money because I don't think they're comparable players.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I think the easiest way to look at it is
- 17:47Speaker 2: if Bobasheed is signing with a big market team, they
- 17:50Speaker 2: are likely trying to sign him for an extended period
- 17:53Speaker 2: of time, so that lowers the luxury tax number. Right,
- 17:56Speaker 2: So if he's what twenty seven, then he does end
- 17:59Speaker 2: up signing it ten year deal, even though the end
- 18:01Speaker 2: of the deal could look ugly, as it could for
- 18:03Speaker 2: Trey Turner and so many of these other guys that
- 18:04Speaker 2: signed deals that were maybe a couple of years longer
- 18:07Speaker 2: than the market says, but it extends the luxury tax
- 18:10Speaker 2: number to keep them from paying basically bills to the
- 18:14Speaker 2: Marlins pirates a's et cetera for them to pocket. Right,
- 18:17Speaker 2: that's how that game works. So let's say he signs
- 18:19Speaker 2: a ten year contract just to play. Simple math of
- 18:23Speaker 2: one win ten mili. Half of that is five difference
- 18:27Speaker 2: between second and short five million dollars over a ten
- 18:30Speaker 2: year period is fifty mil. So if you're on a
- 18:32Speaker 2: conversation and he's talking to say five teams, they might
- 18:36Speaker 2: all say, hey, Boe in the past at short is
- 18:41Speaker 2: valued at two twenty five. We've got him at one
- 18:45Speaker 2: seventy five because we want him to play second base.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I do think whether they express that super publicly and
- 18:52Speaker 2: not as basic or not, that is how teams try
- 18:55Speaker 2: and calculate this nowadays.
- 18:57Speaker 4: So well, when you were talking, I thought about a
- 18:59Speaker 4: fair comparison. Maybe is Xander Bogarts to him played shortstop,
- 19:03Speaker 4: but then when the emergence of Hasak Kim, he moved
- 19:06Speaker 4: over to second base. I know he's back at shortstop,
- 19:08Speaker 4: but maybe that's a scenario where you're talking about money differential.
- 19:12Speaker 4: If Bogarts would as signed it as a second basement,
- 19:14Speaker 4: what would he have gotten as opposed to be in shortstop.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah, so he signed for eleven to eighty, right, so
- 19:20Speaker 2: it's the same concept. Maybe then he's valued at eleven
- 19:24Speaker 2: two thirty. And I've heard and read from good insiders
- 19:30Speaker 2: that Bogarts deal is not a good comparison for almost anything,
- 19:34Speaker 2: because there was an owner essentially on his deathbed unfortunately,
- 19:38Speaker 2: who really wanted to win and said, fuck it, just
- 19:42Speaker 2: spend way more than everyone else to get some guys
- 19:44Speaker 2: and let's see if we can make a quick run.
- 19:46Speaker 2: So the rest of the market might have had Xander
- 19:48Speaker 2: Bogarts as a two hundred and twenty ish million dollar player,
- 19:52Speaker 2: two hundred million dollar player, whatever it is, and the
- 19:55Speaker 2: Padres just threw a massive number out there, and I
- 19:57Speaker 2: think Bogarts was like, my god, that's not what we
- 20:01Speaker 2: had pegged for this offseason. It's a it's a good idea,
- 20:05Speaker 2: but I think that's how this is being valued right now,
- 20:08Speaker 2: because you're right, KP. Boguards played Churts up for a while.
- 20:10Speaker 2: They were there always those question marks like he's definitely
- 20:13Speaker 2: gonna have to move off the position.
- 20:14Speaker 1: It's just a matter of when not if you can
- 20:17Speaker 1: say that by namebody.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Everybody's got to move off the position.
- 20:20Speaker 4: KP.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Did you play house how soon? No?
- 20:24Speaker 4: And and and there was a point in my career
- 20:27Speaker 4: and you know, EGO got involved a little bit too.
- 20:30Speaker 4: You you always think you're the best man for the job.
- 20:32Speaker 4: But I started getting around players that you know, could
- 20:36Speaker 4: play the position better than me, and then I had
- 20:38Speaker 4: to go to the corner, you know. And you know,
- 20:41Speaker 4: doesn't mean I couldn't play centerfield even to my last year.
- 20:44Speaker 4: You know, I started opening day last year in centerfield
- 20:47Speaker 4: for a team. Was are the same caliber centerfield er
- 20:49Speaker 4: I was maybe four or five years ago? Probably not,
- 20:52Speaker 4: But you know, I would hope knowing Bo, hopefully he
- 20:55Speaker 4: would be able to read the room and understand like
- 20:59Speaker 4: and and being around the team last year, watching what
- 21:01Speaker 4: Jim Andez was able to do it shortstop and being like,
- 21:04Speaker 4: you know what, I'm here to win. I'm making a
- 21:07Speaker 4: ton of money. I love being in Toronto, and I'm
- 21:10Speaker 4: making the assumption these are things that he wants. But
- 21:13Speaker 4: I would hope that he loves the city. He was
- 21:16Speaker 4: drafted developed by that team. You know, he came up
- 21:19Speaker 4: with Vladdie. He sees Vlatty's security. He's going to get
- 21:22Speaker 4: his security. It's just the best fit for him moving forward.
- 21:27Speaker 4: And you know, you talk about legacy. If he wants
- 21:29Speaker 4: to have a legacy not only in Toronto, in the
- 21:32Speaker 4: game or in the game, it's going to be what
- 21:34Speaker 4: he does at home plate. You know, could he be
- 21:36Speaker 4: a three thousand hit guy, could he eventually be a
- 21:40Speaker 4: Hall of Famer. I mean, his legacy is not going
- 21:42Speaker 4: to be determined by what position he plays, but what
- 21:45Speaker 4: he does in the batter's box.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Yeah. And for the record, I love Boba Schett. I
- 21:49Speaker 1: mean I love the bat.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I think he'll be at least in above average scheck
- 21:53Speaker 2: and basement. Yeah, from what we saw un limited time,
- 21:55Speaker 2: he might even be an elite second basement for a
- 21:57Speaker 2: chunk of time right now coming up.
- 21:59Speaker 3: No, I mean that's fine. I mean you have the
- 22:03Speaker 3: you have the best. You have the best second basement
- 22:06Speaker 3: in the game defensively playing shortstop. So when you talk
- 22:09Speaker 3: about the most elite second basement right now, defensively, that's
- 22:13Speaker 3: a that's a big that's a big, big pair of
- 22:16Speaker 3: shoes to fill. Let's put it that way.
- 22:19Speaker 4: What a great guy to learn from. I mean, if
- 22:21Speaker 4: he's in the organization, you're talking about a guy who
- 22:23Speaker 4: you know made, Yeah, made the transition from second to
- 22:27Speaker 4: short short to second you know, like those guys working
- 22:30Speaker 4: together in Tanem could be something special. But I also
- 22:33Speaker 4: understand in the Blue Jays situation, if they don't bring
- 22:37Speaker 4: him back, they have a pretty darn good player in
- 22:39Speaker 4: Ernie Clement, who isn't the caliber player as Boba Schett.
- 22:44Speaker 4: He is an elite defender, that is one thing he does.
- 22:46Speaker 4: And you know, a guy just set the record in
- 22:48Speaker 4: the postseason for most hits in the postseason. You know, obviously,
- 22:51Speaker 4: the clutch factor, the swagger, the super utility ability. You know,
- 22:57Speaker 4: so these are all factors that potent actually could be
- 23:00Speaker 4: working against Bobishad and the position change and also having
- 23:03Speaker 4: internal candidates. But you know, when I think about the
- 23:06Speaker 4: Blue Jays, I think about Bloody and Bo doing it together,
- 23:10Speaker 4: finishing the job.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Ernie Clement was insane in the playoffs, and I'm excited
- 23:16Speaker 2: to see full season of the extra swag and confidence
- 23:19Speaker 2: that he got from just abusing pitching all across October,
- 23:24Speaker 2: right just they could figure him out the best pitching,
- 23:28Speaker 2: they could not figure out how to get him off,
- 23:31Speaker 2: you know, how to get him out.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I mean it's on basic half the freaking postseason.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Just an incredible performance from Ernie Clement, so I'm with
- 23:39Speaker 2: you there. Yeah, they've got good problems right now.
- 23:41Speaker 1: The Blue Jays
