Sheriff Johnathan Morgan is retiring—officially handing in his papers this past Monday—with his last day set for December 1st. A new sheriff will be sworn in then, following a leadership transition that’s already underway. Morgan, who joined law enforcement in 1997 and rose through the ranks to lead the Operations Division before becoming sheriff in August 2025, didn’t win re-election—he lost the Democratic primary to Troy McDuffie, who’ll face LaRue Windham in November’s general election.
