- 2:41Speaker 4: the story of your police force in action.
- 2:48Speaker 5: It was Monday, March 18th. It was overcast in Los Angeles.
- 2:51Speaker 2: We were working a night watch out of homicide detail.
- 2:53Speaker 2: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Warman. My
- 2:56Speaker 2: name's Friday.
- 2:57Speaker 6: It was 6.48 p.m.
- 2:58Speaker 2: When we got to the corner of 11th and South
- 3:00Speaker 2: Pierce Street. The 797 Club.
- 3:04Speaker 7: Sorry, no more service tonight.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Closing up.
- 3:06Speaker 6: Your name Leon Morley?
- 3:07Speaker 7: Yeah, I can't serve you any drinks, so closing up.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Police officers, Mr.
- 3:10Speaker 8: Morley.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I'd like to talk to you a minute, if you
- 3:11Speaker 2: don't mind.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Oh, I'm sorry. I thought maybe you were after a drink.
- 3:14Speaker 2: We were just talking to the officers in the radio
- 3:15Speaker 2: car up the street, the car that answered the call
- 3:17Speaker 2: out here tonight.
- 3:18Speaker 6: They told us you're one of the people who saw
- 3:20Speaker 6: what happened.
- 3:21Speaker 7: Well, yeah, I guess I did. I saw part of
- 3:22Speaker 7: it anyway. Lousy deal, kind of thing, makes your ulcers pop.
- 3:26Speaker 7: That's why I'm closing down early, going home.
- 3:27Speaker 2: We're following through on the investigation, Mr.
- 3:29Speaker 8: Morley.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I'd like to have you tell us everything you know
- 3:31Speaker 2: about it, if you would, everything that you saw.
- 3:33Speaker 7: I told the cops in the radio car everything I know.
- 3:35Speaker 7: It was about six o'clock and I heard this big
- 3:37Speaker 7: commotion out in the street. I didn't know what it was.
- 3:40Speaker 7: Sounded like somebody was hurt. I went out and took
- 3:42Speaker 7: a look. Marie in the beauty shop next door, she
- 3:44Speaker 7: was outside rubbernecking too.
- 3:46Speaker 6: She saw as much as I did. You talked to her? Yes, sir,
- 3:48Speaker 6: we have.
- 3:48Speaker 2: She wasn't too clear on some of the details. Maybe
- 3:50Speaker 2: you can straighten it out for us.
- 3:51Speaker 6: I'm glad to if I can.
- 3:52Speaker 7: What do you want to know?
- 3:53Speaker 6: You mind telling us in your own words just exactly
- 3:55Speaker 6: how it happened? I mean, how you saw it?
- 3:57Speaker 7: Well, there's not an awful lot to it. I was
- 3:59Speaker 7: working behind the bar here, and it was around 6 o'clock,
- 4:01Speaker 7: like I say, maybe a couple of minutes after. I
- 4:04Speaker 7: was just fixing up a round of drinks for some
- 4:06Speaker 7: fellas when I heard this noise outside.
- 4:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 7: Didn't know what it was at first. Sounded like somebody screaming,
- 4:10Speaker 7: like they were hurt.
- 4:11Speaker 2: You said you heard this commotion outside the bar about
- 4:13Speaker 2: 6 o'clock.
- 4:14Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right. Well, I didn't go out right then.
- 4:16Speaker 7: I finished mixing the round of drinks. First, I thought
- 4:19Speaker 7: the racket was just a couple of early drunks, but
- 4:21Speaker 7: it kept on. Man screaming. It got louder, and I decided.
- 4:24Speaker 4: To take a look.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 4:25Speaker 7: I went out and looked down the street a couple
- 4:27Speaker 7: of doors, down toward the corner.
- 4:28Speaker 6: Which corner is that, Mr. Moore?
- 4:30Speaker 7: The nearest one, down to the left. Here, I'll show you.
- 4:32Speaker 2: All right, fine.
- 4:34Speaker 7: I didn't know what was happening. It was a terrible sound.
- 4:36Speaker 7: A man screaming at the top of his lungs.
- 4:38Speaker 6: You recognize who the man was?
- 4:40Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
- 4:41Speaker 7: Never saw him before. Didn't get too good a look
- 4:43Speaker 7: at him anyway. He was getting kind of dark. Here,
- 4:45Speaker 7: let me show you. Over here by the window.
- 4:46Speaker 1: All right, fine.
- 4:47Speaker 7: Now, you see, it was right down there, just next
- 4:52Speaker 7: to that mailbox.
- 4:53Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 4:53Speaker 7: These two guys had a hold of the man who
- 4:55Speaker 7: was screaming. They were trying to drag him into a car,
- 4:57Speaker 7: a gray sedan. The man was trying to fight him off.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Can you describe any of these three men for us?
- 5:02Speaker 7: No, I couldn't be sure about it. Like I say,
- 5:04Speaker 7: it was getting kind of dark. Well, you can see
- 5:06Speaker 7: for yourself, they were about 75 or 100 feet away.
- 5:09Speaker 7: This man, they were trying to drag him into the car.
- 5:11Speaker 7: He kept screaming, leave me alone, you can have the money.
- 5:13Speaker 7: Leave me alone, you can have my car. Looked like
- 5:15Speaker 7: he was hurt to me, blood on his clothes.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Didn't anybody try to help him?
- 5:18Speaker 7: Well, you know how this neighborhood is. When there's trouble,
- 5:20Speaker 7: they all cut out. They don't want to get involved.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Happened pretty fast, anyway. These two guys got this man
- 5:26Speaker 7: in the back seat of the car, and the big
- 5:28Speaker 7: guy got in the back seat with him. The smaller
- 5:30Speaker 7: guy got in the front seat, and they took off.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Which way did they go, Mr.
- 5:33Speaker 8: Morley?
- 5:34Speaker 7: Straight down the street there. Turned right at that corner.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Did you happen to see the license number?
- 5:38Speaker 7: No, I thought of it, though. They didn't turn the
- 5:40Speaker 7: car lights on. It went by pretty fast, too. I
- 5:43Speaker 7: couldn't get a good look at it.
- 5:44Speaker 6: Was it a California plate, do you know?
- 5:46Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, I noticed that much. That's about all of them.
- 5:48Speaker 2: What kind of a car was it?
- 5:50Speaker 7: Like I told you, a gray sedan, four-door. I couldn't
- 5:52Speaker 7: tell the make. Fairly new car.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Well, did you notice anything outstanding about the car? Anything
- 5:56Speaker 2: at all?
- 5:57Speaker 7: Well, I don't know. What do you mean, outstanding?
- 5:59Speaker 2: Well, special markings of any kind. Anything unusual. Maybe some
- 6:01Speaker 2: of the accessories.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Spotlight?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Anything like that?
- 6:04Speaker 7: No, nothing I noticed. The rear bumper was bent out,
- 6:07Speaker 7: I think. Matter of fact, I'm pretty sure of it.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Rear bumper?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:10Speaker 7: I saw it when they drove off. They drove right
- 6:12Speaker 7: past the place here.
- 6:14Speaker 6: How about the men, sir? Can you describe them at all?
- 6:16Speaker 8: No.
- 6:16Speaker 7: One was pretty tall and thin. The other one was smaller.
- 6:19Speaker 7: About the same build on the thin side. They sure
- 6:21Speaker 7: must have worked that guy over. He was all bent over.
- 6:24Speaker 7: Looked like he was holding his stomach. Stains all down
- 6:26Speaker 7: the front of his suit. On the sidewalk, too. I
- 6:28Speaker 7: guess you saw that.
- 6:28Speaker 6: Yes, sir, we did.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Now, you're sure that you've never seen any of these
- 6:31Speaker 2: men before? Nothing familiar about them at all?
- 6:33Speaker 7: No, sir, not to me. I think if I saw
- 6:35Speaker 7: them before, I'd know it. Oh, just a minute.
- 6:37Speaker 6: It's probably the wife.
- 6:38Speaker 7: Excuse me.
- 6:38Speaker 6: I'll be right back. Yeah, sure. What do you think, Jim?
- 6:41Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't look too good. Stains on the sidewalk
- 6:43Speaker 2: down there. If it was just a robbery, why'd they
- 6:45Speaker 2: take the guy with them?
- 6:46Speaker 6: Yeah, he got me. He possibly might have recognized him.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Maybe you got something, but I hope you're wrong. If
- 6:50Speaker 2: he can make the hoods, there's a good chance they're
- 6:51Speaker 2: not going to turn the man loose alive.
- 6:53Speaker 8: Sergeant.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 7: It's your office on the phone. We want to talk
- 6:56Speaker 7: to either one of you.
- 6:56Speaker 6: I'll get it, Jim.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Right, thanks, Frank.
- 6:57Speaker 7: Phone's straight back, Sergeant. End of the bar.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, thanks.
- 7:00Speaker 7: Look, Sergeant, I've got to have something to quiet my nerves.
- 7:03Speaker 7: How about you? You want a drink?
- 7:04Speaker 2: No, no, thanks. Besides the woman in that beauty shop
- 7:07Speaker 2: next door, Mr. Morley, did you notice anyone else around
- 7:09Speaker 2: and saw what went on?
- 7:10Speaker 7: No, as far as I know, Marie and I were
- 7:12Speaker 7: the only ones. Just like I told you, when there's
- 7:14Speaker 7: any trouble around this neighborhood, they get off the street quick.
- 7:16Speaker 2: You can't think of anything else that might give us
- 7:18Speaker 2: a break on this? Anything at all now?
- 7:20Speaker 6: Wish I could.
- 7:21Speaker 7: I think I told you just about everything. Sure feel lousy.
- 7:25Speaker 6: Joe.
- 7:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 6: I was talking to Harry.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:28Speaker 6: 1A1 found the car, a great sedan.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Where'd they find it?
- 7:30Speaker 6: Third and Bixle. It was empty. Key's still in it.
- 7:32Speaker 6: You sure it's the right car? Bloodstains in the back seat.
- 7:35Speaker 2: 7.18 p.m.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Frank and I left the 797 Club, got in the car,
- 7:44Speaker 5: and drove down to 3rd and Vixell, where the abandoned
- 7:46Speaker 5: gray sedan had been located. It matched the same general
- 7:49Speaker 5: description of the abductor's car, a four-door gray sedan, late model,
- 7:53Speaker 5: with a damaged rear bumper. Dean Bergman from Leighton Prince
- 7:56Speaker 5: dusted the car and succeeded in raising a half a
- 7:58Speaker 5: dozen fingerprints, which he took back to the office for
- 8:00Speaker 5: possible identification.
- 8:02Speaker 2: The crime lab crew went over the car for additional
- 8:04Speaker 2: physical evidence.
- 8:06Speaker 5: The stains found on the back seat were identified as
- 8:08Speaker 5: having been made by human blood. The white slip attached
- 8:11Speaker 5: to the steering post showed the car was registered to
- 8:13Speaker 5: a Kenneth L.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Gorman at a Canal Street address.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Before Frank and I left the scene, we got a
- 8:18Speaker 5: report that approximately 20 minutes prior to the time the
- 8:21Speaker 5: gray sedan had been located, another car had been stolen.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It was a maroon, late model Club Coupe.
- 8:27Speaker 5: Licensed 7 Tom 7972. It had been taken in the
- 8:31Speaker 5: same neighborhood, less than two blocks from where the gray
- 8:33Speaker 5: sedan was abandoned.
- 8:35Speaker 2: A broadcast and an APB was gotten out on it immediately. 8.05 p.m.
- 8:40Speaker 5: After checking by the office, Frank and I drove down
- 8:42Speaker 5: to check on the home address of the registered owner
- 8:44Speaker 5: of the gray sedan, Kenneth L.
- 8:45Speaker 8: Gorman.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It was a white wood-framed cottage at the upper end
- 8:48Speaker 2: of Canal Street. The woman who.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Answered the door identified herself as Mrs. Elsie Gorman, a
- 8:53Speaker 5: small middle-aged woman, blue eyes, partially graying hair.
- 8:56Speaker 9: No, I'm sorry, officers. My husband isn't home right now.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Where is he, Mrs.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Gorman, do you know?
- 9:01Speaker 9: Well, he went downtown to see a friend of his,
- 9:03Speaker 9: business appointments. Is it anything I can help you with?
- 9:06Speaker 2: Are you expecting your husband home pretty soon, ma'am?
- 9:08Speaker 9: Yes, I am. Matter of fact, he should have been
- 9:10Speaker 9: home long before this. I don't know what's keeping him.
- 9:12Speaker 9: Told me he was going downtown to collect some money
- 9:14Speaker 9: a friend of his owed him. Said he'd be right back.
- 9:17Speaker 9: I don't know what could be keeping him.
- 9:19Speaker 2: When did he leave the house, ma'am?
- 9:20Speaker 9: About 2.30, 3 o'clock this afternoon. It's almost 8.30 now.
- 9:25Speaker 7: He couldn't be.
- 9:26Speaker 9: He stopped to have a beer with his friends. He
- 9:28Speaker 9: usually phones, though, if he's going to be late. I...
- 9:30Speaker 9: I don't understand these men sometimes.
- 9:32Speaker 6: You and your husband own a car, Mrs. Gorman?
- 9:34Speaker 8: Yes, we do.
- 9:36Speaker 9: My husband has it right now.
- 9:37Speaker 8: Why?
- 9:37Speaker 2: What kind of a car is it, ma'am?
- 9:39Speaker 9: A 49 Chevy sedan.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Gray color, four-door?
- 9:42Speaker 8: Yes.
- 9:42Speaker 2: License number 7T7972?
- 9:44Speaker 9: Well, yes, I think that's it.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Why?
- 9:48Speaker 9: What's the matter? Something happen?
- 9:50Speaker 6: Nothing to get worried about, Mrs. Gorman. We located the
- 9:52Speaker 6: car in the downtown area, parked on a side street.
- 9:54Speaker 6: The keys were still in it. Thought we'd check on it.
- 9:57Speaker 9: Where was it parked?
- 9:58Speaker 6: Near 3rd and Bixel.
- 9:59Speaker 9: Well, that can't be right. This man my husband was
- 10:01Speaker 9: going to see has his store on Alameda. It's on
- 10:04Speaker 9: Alameda between 9th and 10th. No reason for Kenneth to
- 10:08Speaker 9: drive the car way down on 3rd Street.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Possible he might have had another business appointment down there, ma'am.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Maybe something he didn't mention to you.
- 10:13Speaker 9: Well, I don't know. I suppose it is possible. You'd
- 10:17Speaker 9: think he'd call, though. He usually does when he's going
- 10:19Speaker 9: to be out late like this.
- 10:21Speaker 2: What about this man your husband was going to see,
- 10:22Speaker 2: Miss Gorman? You happen to know who he is?
- 10:24Speaker 9: Yes, Fred Bernard. He's in the sheet metal business, has
- 10:27Speaker 9: his shop on South Alameda. He owed my husband $ 300.
- 10:30Speaker 9: My husband went down this afternoon to collect it.
- 10:33Speaker 6: He a friend of your husband's, is he?
- 10:34Speaker 9: Oh, yes, they're good friends. Fred and my husband have
- 10:37Speaker 9: done business for years.
- 10:38Speaker 6: There wasn't any ill feeling between them about this debt?
- 10:41Speaker 9: No, no, of course not. It was just a bill
- 10:43Speaker 9: for some materials. Why do you ask that?
- 10:46Speaker 5: Just routine questions, ma'am. Can you think of anyone at
- 10:49Speaker 5: all who might have a quarrel with your husband? Somebody
- 10:51Speaker 5: who has a grudge against.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Him, maybe?
- 10:53Speaker 8: No.
- 10:53Speaker 9: Why are you asking questions like that? Is something wrong?
- 10:57Speaker 9: Something you're not telling me about?
- 10:58Speaker 6: No, ma'am.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It's just a routine check, Ms. Gorman. Nothing to worry about.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I want to make sure everything's all right, that's all.
- 11:04Speaker 9: The way you talk, it isn't all right. It's far
- 11:06Speaker 9: from right. It's never gone this long without calling me.
- 11:10Speaker 9: There must be something wrong.
- 11:11Speaker 2: You're just getting yourself all worked up, ma'am. You admit
- 11:13Speaker 2: your husband might have had another appointment after he left Bernard.
- 11:16Speaker 2: By the way, have you checked with Mr. Bernard yet, ma'am?
- 11:19Speaker 9: No, to tell you the truth, I haven't. I don't
- 11:21Speaker 9: usually like to call my husband when he's out on business.
- 11:24Speaker 9: I don't like to bother him. This is different, though.
- 11:27Speaker 9: I think I'll call Fred Bernard right now.
- 11:29Speaker 2: That's a good idea. Do you mind if we wait, ma'am?
- 11:31Speaker 9: No, no, not at all. It'll only take me a minute.
- 11:33Speaker 7: Excuse me.
- 11:34Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am. What do you think?
- 11:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Doesn't look too good, does it? Car's abandoned. Stain's in
- 11:40Speaker 6: the back seat. Man's late in getting home. It's all there.
- 11:43Speaker 8: Could be anything, couldn't it?
- 11:44Speaker 6: Doesn't look good.
- 11:45Speaker 8: Sergeant?
- 11:46Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am.
- 11:47Speaker 9: I just talked to Fred Bernard. He said my husband's
- 11:49Speaker 9: been there and left.
- 11:50Speaker 2: What time did he leave Bernard's?
- 11:51Speaker 9: About 3.15, 3.30. Fred Bernard paid my husband the $ 300
- 11:55Speaker 9: he owed him, and my husband left. Fred told me
- 11:58Speaker 9: my husband asked him if he wouldn't have a glass
- 12:00Speaker 9: of beer with him, but Fred said no.
- 12:01Speaker 6: He was busy.
- 12:02Speaker 9: So my husband said, all right, he was going to
- 12:04Speaker 9: have a beer at home. Told Fred he was going
- 12:06Speaker 9: right home. That was at 3.15 this afternoon.
- 12:09Speaker 8: Yes, ma'am.
- 12:10Speaker 9: There must be something wrong. I know it. It just
- 12:12Speaker 9: isn't like my husband. He wouldn't leave the car like that.
- 12:16Speaker 9: If he was late, at least he'd call me. Oh,
- 12:19Speaker 9: would you excuse me again? I've had the dinner on
- 12:21Speaker 9: the stove. It's boiled away to nothing. I want to
- 12:23Speaker 9: turn it off.
- 12:24Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am. Go right ahead. I hope it works out
- 12:26Speaker 6: all right. Seems like a nice woman.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Well, she does. Sure doesn't figure, does it? He's had
- 12:31Speaker 2: plenty of time to get home. No reason why he
- 12:32Speaker 2: shouldn't be here by this time. Oh, I can think
- 12:34Speaker 2: of two. Yeah. An empty car and $ 300. We continued
- 12:42Speaker 2: interviewing the wife of the missing man, Kenneth Gorman, and
- 12:45Speaker 2: she told us that occasionally he did some drinking at
- 12:47Speaker 2: neighborhood bars. She also told us that.
- 12:49Speaker 5: When her husband drank quite a bit in public places,
- 12:51Speaker 5: he was over-friendly and he liked to.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Brag and flash money. Mrs.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Gorman got on the phone, contacted all their friends and
- 12:57Speaker 5: relatives who happened to be home, but none of them
- 13:00Speaker 5: had seen or heard from Mr.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Gorman that day. Before Frank and I left, Mrs. Gorman
- 13:04Speaker 2: gave us a complete description of her husband, the clothing
- 13:06Speaker 2: he was wearing, and also a recent photograph of him.
- 13:09Speaker 5: We called Fred Bernard, the friend of the missing man,
- 13:11Speaker 5: the last known person to see him, and told him
- 13:13Speaker 5: that we'd like to talk to him. He told us
- 13:15Speaker 5: that he was working late, getting out a rush order,
- 13:17Speaker 5: and that we could find him in his shop. 9.05 p.m.
- 13:20Speaker 2: We located Bernard at his shop on South Alameda.
- 13:24Speaker 8: Won't take long, will it? An awful rush tonight.
- 13:26Speaker 6: Won't take long, sir. Did Mr. Gorman give you any
- 13:28Speaker 6: idea where he was going when he left here this afternoon?
- 13:31Speaker 8: No, just like I told his wife on the phone.
- 13:33Speaker 8: I paid him the money I owed him. He asked
- 13:34Speaker 8: me if I wanted a beer. Took a rain check
- 13:36Speaker 8: on it and he left. Went right out that door there.
- 13:38Speaker 2: He seem worried about anything, Mr.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Gorman?
- 13:40Speaker 8: No, not that I could see. Seemed all right to me.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Had he been drinking, do you know?
- 13:44Speaker 6: No, couldn't say.
- 13:45Speaker 8: If he was, I couldn't smell it on him.
- 13:46Speaker 6: Is there anything unusual about him at all?
- 13:48Speaker 8: Anything out of the ordinary? No, same old Ken. Pretty
- 13:51Speaker 8: good mood when I paid him. Three hundred dollars cash.
- 13:54Speaker 8: He's all dressed up. I guess you might call that unusual.
- 13:56Speaker 4: How do you mean unusual?
- 13:57Speaker 8: Well, Ken's like me. Working man, not much of a dresser.
- 14:01Speaker 8: Usually find him in working clothes. I think it's the
- 14:03Speaker 8: second time I ever saw him in a suit. A
- 14:05Speaker 8: new one, too. Looked nice on him.
- 14:07Speaker 2: He didn't give you any indication at all where he
- 14:08Speaker 2: might be going, did he?
- 14:09Speaker 8: No, he just collected his money and went out. I
- 14:11Speaker 8: thought maybe he was going home. What did Miss Gorman
- 14:14Speaker 8: tell you? Did you have any idea where he is? No, sir.
- 14:16Speaker 2: She told us he came down here to collect some money.
- 14:18Speaker 2: She expected him right home. We're not trying to be nosy, Mr. Bernard,
- 14:22Speaker 2: but how do Gorman and his wife get along?
- 14:24Speaker 8: Are they pretty happy together? Yes, I guess you might
- 14:26Speaker 8: say that. Get along as well as you could expect
- 14:28Speaker 8: them to.
- 14:29Speaker 2: What do you mean by that? Nothing.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Ken's a... Well, he's a fellow who likes his nightlife.
- 14:34Speaker 8: Wife's just the opposite, quiet type. Almost left him once.
- 14:38Speaker 8: Guess they're getting along pretty good now, though.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Why'd she almost leave him? Would you happen to know?
- 14:42Speaker 8: Well, she found him out with a girlfriend. Matter of fact,
- 14:44Speaker 8: she caught him at a terrible row. Shouldn't understand any
- 14:47Speaker 8: of it. The girlfriend wasn't much at all. Real lush.
- 14:50Speaker 6: You know the girl's name?
- 14:51Speaker 8: Yeah, I met her twice. Name's Elaine something. She works
- 14:54Speaker 8: at a cafe three blocks from here. Real lush.
- 14:56Speaker 7: She sure took it.
- 14:58Speaker 2: You know if Gorman's been seeing her lately?
- 15:00Speaker 8: He says he hasn't been. I don't know. I never
- 15:02Speaker 8: can tell when he's drinking, though. Didn't his wife mention
- 15:05Speaker 8: the girl at all? No, I guess she wouldn't. It's
- 15:09Speaker 8: been a terrible thing for her when she found out.
- 15:11Speaker 9: Terrible.
- 15:11Speaker 2: How long ago was all this, Mr. Bernard? I mean,
- 15:13Speaker 2: it's a fair Gorman had with this girl.
- 15:15Speaker 8: Oh, six weeks, maybe two months ago, just about that.
- 15:19Speaker 8: I tell you, it was the queerest thing I ever saw.
- 15:21Speaker 8: Ken has a nice, quiet wife of his at home.
- 15:23Speaker 8: They get along fine together, never fought, never quarreled. And
- 15:27Speaker 8: he picks up with his girly lane, sure different.
- 15:29Speaker 6: How's that?
- 15:30Speaker 8: Real mean girl. Two of them fought all the time.
- 15:32Speaker 8: The End 9.40.
- 15:36Speaker 6: P.m.
- 15:37Speaker 5: We left Fred Bernard at his shop, drove to the
- 15:39Speaker 5: restaurant where Gorman's girlfriend reportedly was working as a waitress,
- 15:42Speaker 5: and we checked with the manager. He told us a
- 15:44Speaker 5: girl by the name of Elaine Summerall had been employed there,
- 15:47Speaker 5: but that she'd been fired for drinking on the job.
- 15:49Speaker 5: He also told us that he had reason to suspect
- 15:51Speaker 5: that Elaine Summerall was not the girl's true name. We
- 15:54Speaker 5: showed the cafe manager a picture of Mr.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Gorman, and he identified it.
- 15:58Speaker 5: He said Gorman had been in that afternoon inquiring about
- 16:00Speaker 5: the Summerall girl. Gorman had asked for the girl's forwarding address,
- 16:03Speaker 5: but the manager told us that he'd thrown it away.
- 16:06Speaker 5: We left our card with him and asked him to
- 16:08Speaker 5: contact us immediately in the event.
- 16:09Speaker 2: The girl returned. 10.18 p.m. We drove back to the
- 16:13Speaker 2: city hall and checked in at the office.
- 16:15Speaker 5: We ran the name and description of the Summerall girl
- 16:17Speaker 5: through R & I, and they told us they had
- 16:19Speaker 5: a Summerall girl in the files who answered the description.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Elaine Summerall, alias Elaine O'Donnell, alias Elaine Shellman. There were
- 16:27Speaker 5: wants out on her for forgery, three counts, and grand
- 16:30Speaker 5: theft merchandise. We signed out of the office, went across
- 16:33Speaker 5: the street to the Federal Cafe, and had a sandwich
- 16:34Speaker 5: and a cup of coffee.
- 16:36Speaker 6: Wouldn't look so rough if it wasn't for the stains
- 16:38Speaker 6: they found in the backseat of that car.
- 16:40Speaker 2: It's hard to get around at points to mourn robbery,
- 16:42Speaker 2: doesn't it?
- 16:43Speaker 6: Yeah, Moe sure strikes me pretty funny, pulling the man
- 16:45Speaker 6: off the street like that.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Must be either hard up or crazy, huh? Hello, cafe.
- 16:49Speaker 7: Just a minute.
- 16:50Speaker 9: Friday?
- 16:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:52Speaker 8: Phone.
- 16:52Speaker 6: Right, thank you.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I'll be right back.
- 16:53Speaker 6: Thank you. Yeah, Friday talking. Yeah, Glenn.
- 16:58Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 16:59Speaker 6: Mm-hmm, where?
- 17:02Speaker 2: How long ago?
- 17:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I see, huh? It wasn't, huh?
- 17:07Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll roll on it right now. Tell them we're
- 17:09Speaker 2: on our way in, will you? Yeah, right. Thanks, Glenn. Bye. Yeah? Chandler,
- 17:16Speaker 2: they just found the maroon coupe, the one stolen in
- 17:18Speaker 2: the neighborhood where Gorman's was dropped.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Where'd they find it?
- 17:20Speaker 2: Picked it off going up through Lancaster, Sheriff's deputies.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Does it look good on our job?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Well, there were two men in the car. One of
- 17:25Speaker 2: them had a knife, bloodstains on their clothes, all over
- 17:27Speaker 2: the inside of the car.
- 17:28Speaker 6: How's it figure?
- 17:29Speaker 2: It doesn't. Not a scratch on either one of them.
- 17:31Speaker 7: The End.
- 17:42Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet, authentic stories of your police
- 17:45Speaker 4: force in action.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Friends, because of its quality, its extra mildness, its better
- 17:51Speaker 2: flavor and aroma, more smokers coast to coast are switching
- 17:55Speaker 2: to king size Fatimas every day. Yes, more smokers coast
- 17:59Speaker 2: to coast are finding that in Fatima, the difference is quality. Now,
- 18:04Speaker 2: here's the practical way to prove Fatima quality yourself.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Compare Fatima with any other king-size cigarette.
- 18:12Speaker 2: One, Fatima's length filters the smoke 85 millimeters for your protection.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Two, Fatima's length cools the smoke for your protection.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Three, Fatima's length gives you those extra puffs. 21% longer
- 18:26Speaker 2: than standard cigarette size.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Fatima gives you more for your money.
- 18:31Speaker 2: And in king-size Fatima, you get an extra mild and
- 18:34Speaker 2: soothing smoke. Plus the added protection of Fatima quality.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Remember, more and more of your friends are switching to
- 18:42Speaker 4: king-size Fatimas.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Compare them yourself. King-size Fatima. Extra mild and soothing. Plus
- 18:50Speaker 2: the added protection of Fatima quality. Look for the bright,
- 18:54Speaker 2: sunny yellow pack. By King Size Fatima. Monday, March 18th, 10.40 p.m.
- 19:09Speaker 2: After we received the report that the stolen maroon coupe
- 19:12Speaker 2: along with the two suspects had been recovered north of
- 19:14Speaker 2: the city in the town of Lancaster, Frank and.
- 19:16Speaker 5: I stopped by the record bureau and checked to see
- 19:18Speaker 5: if there was a make on either one of the suspects.
- 19:21Speaker 2: The first one, Paul Mike, white male American, 32 years, 5'11,
- 19:25Speaker 2: 150 pounds.
- 19:26Speaker 5: Brown hair, brown eyes. He had a long felony record,
- 19:28Speaker 5: including burglary and robbery. He'd served sentences in both San
- 19:32Speaker 5: Quentin and Folsom, and.
- 19:33Speaker 2: There was a want on him for violation of parole.
- 19:35Speaker 2: The second suspect, Floyd.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Compton, white male American, 34 years, 5'8, 135 pounds, black hair,
- 19:41Speaker 5: brown eyes. His record included arrests on suspicion of burglary,
- 19:46Speaker 5: four grand theft merchandise, and three drunk arrests. He was
- 19:49Speaker 5: a petty thief known to us as a shoplifter. He'd
- 19:52Speaker 5: never served time in a penitentiary. 10.55 p.m., Frank and I,
- 19:56Speaker 5: with identifying photographs of the two suspects, left the city.
- 19:59Speaker 2: And drove north.
- 20:00Speaker 5: We checked in at the Lancaster Sheriff's Office substation. Captain
- 20:04Speaker 5: Walker Hannon briefed us on the details of the arrest,
- 20:06Speaker 5: and then he showed us back to the cell block
- 20:08Speaker 5: where the two suspects were being held. He told us
- 20:11Speaker 5: neither of the men had been questioned because the officers
- 20:13Speaker 5: there weren't acquainted with the facts of the case. He
- 20:15Speaker 5: also informed us both men had been separated from the
- 20:17Speaker 5: time of their apprehension.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Captain Hannon had Paul Mike taken from his cell and
- 20:22Speaker 2: he was brought to the captain's office where we started
- 20:24Speaker 2: to question him. It went slow. I don't think I
- 20:27Speaker 2: understand you, Sergeant. What's all the excitement about? You can
- 20:29Speaker 2: answer that better than we can, Mike.
- 20:31Speaker 6: Answer what? What do you want to know?
- 20:32Speaker 2: The car, Mike. The bloodstains.
- 20:34Speaker 8: What about them?
- 20:34Speaker 2: A little unusual, wouldn't you say?
- 20:36Speaker 6: I don't know anything about any bloodstains. If they're in
- 20:38Speaker 6: the car, I don't know how they got there. It
- 20:40Speaker 6: isn't my car.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Yeah, we know that. What about the stains on your clothes?
- 20:42Speaker 6: Well, I don't know.
- 20:43Speaker 2: They were sitting in the car there. Maybe the stains
- 20:45Speaker 2: rubbed off on us.
- 20:46Speaker 6: You got a cigarette? Only one thing wrong with that story, Mike.
- 20:49Speaker 6: The stains were on the wrong side of you. All right,
- 20:51Speaker 6: so I had a fight. Got hit in the nose.
- 20:53Speaker 6: What's that, a law against it?
- 20:54Speaker 2: I got a hunch, Mike.
- 20:55Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 20:55Speaker 5: You're lying.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Where'd you get that car? I told you where I
- 20:58Speaker 2: got it. Me and Kaufman were bumming a ride on
- 21:00Speaker 2: San Fernando Road. This fool came along in the maroon
- 21:03Speaker 2: coupe and gave us a ride. A couple of miles
- 21:05Speaker 2: this side of Lancaster, he stopped the car and got out.
- 21:07Speaker 6: Said he'd be right back. Walked right out into the desert.
- 21:10Speaker 2: That right?
- 21:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Waited for him to come back. Waited a long time.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Honked the horn, yelled for him. We finally gave it up.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Matter of fact, Compton and me got a little scared.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Thought maybe the car was stolen. I didn't want to
- 21:21Speaker 2: get caught in a hot car. I'm an ex-con.
- 21:23Speaker 6: I couldn't stand the heat.
- 21:24Speaker 2: The truth.
- 21:24Speaker 6: I'm squaring with you.
- 21:25Speaker 2: What about the money, Mike?
- 21:26Speaker 9: Huh?
- 21:27Speaker 2: The money. They booked you in with $ 133 in your pocket.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Oh, yeah. I got lucky in a crap game last night.
- 21:32Speaker 6: I was pulling out.
- 21:34Speaker 2: How about the pocket knife? Bloodstains on it? You win
- 21:36Speaker 2: that in the crap game, too? No, matter of fact,
- 21:38Speaker 2: it was in the car. I found it right there
- 21:39Speaker 2: on the seat.
- 21:40Speaker 6: Big coincidence, Mike.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Somebody leaves you a car, bloodstains on the inside, stains
- 21:44Speaker 2: on you and your partner. Pocket knife, stains on that, too.
- 21:46Speaker 2: You're on parole, leaving town without notice, driving a car
- 21:49Speaker 2: you're not supposed to be driving, pocket full of money
- 21:51Speaker 2: you got no way of accounting for.
- 21:52Speaker 6: Face it, Mike. What do you mean? Face it. You're dead.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Flag on your card now. Parole officer wants you. Now,
- 21:57Speaker 6: how about the truth? What do you mean, the truth?
- 21:59Speaker 6: I've told it to you.
- 21:59Speaker 2: All right, now, come on. Let's save time for all
- 22:01Speaker 2: of us, Mike. You've been around long enough. You've graduated.
- 22:03Speaker 2: You know we're not going to buy that line.
- 22:04Speaker 6: What line? How can I explain things to you? You
- 22:07Speaker 6: won't believe me. I told you nothing but the truth
- 22:09Speaker 6: since I walked into this room, and you won't believe me.
- 22:11Speaker 6: You got a cigarette?
- 22:12Speaker 2: How do you account for the blood in your shirt?
- 22:14Speaker 2: I told you, I had a fight.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Guy hit me in the nose. Happened right down there
- 22:16Speaker 6: in L.A. You can check it.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Where'd it happen?
- 22:18Speaker 6: Bar, downtown. There's a lot of bars downtown. Place on
- 22:22Speaker 6: South Pierce. I go there sometimes. What's the name of it?
- 22:25Speaker 6: 797 Club.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Ask anybody in there. You said it happened tonight? Yeah,
- 22:29Speaker 2: about 8 o'clock. Just before we cut out.
- 22:31Speaker 6: Guy hit me right on the nose. Real rough one.
- 22:34Speaker 6: You got a cigarette?
- 22:35Speaker 2: What time did you say you had that fight?
- 22:36Speaker 6: About 8 o'clock. You sure of that? Sure of what?
- 22:39Speaker 2: You're not doing too well, Mike.
- 22:41Speaker 6: Now what's the matter?
- 22:41Speaker 2: We were at the 797 Club tonight. We talked to
- 22:43Speaker 2: the owner.
- 22:44Speaker 6: So what?
- 22:45Speaker 5: We were there at 635. He locked the place up
- 22:47Speaker 5: and went home at 645. He was sick.
- 22:50Speaker 6: 797 Club? Yeah, that's right.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Now where were you at the time of the robbery?
- 22:54Speaker 2: I want an attorney. I'm not saying anything else. He's
- 22:56Speaker 2: trying to frame me. Take me back to my cell.
- 22:58Speaker 6: Any way you want it, Mike. Let's go. What if
- 23:00Speaker 6: they just tell him the truth and they don't believe you?
- 23:03Speaker 6: How about let's see that? Captain, would you have the
- 23:05Speaker 6: jailer return this one and bring in Captain? How about that?
- 23:11Speaker 6: He couldn't tell the truth if it helped.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I hope we do better with his partner. We're going
- 23:15Speaker 2: to have to. We know we're on the right track.
- 23:17Speaker 2: The big question is, what have they done with Gorman?
- 23:19Speaker 6: Big guess.
- 23:20Speaker 2: A thousand places they could have dumped him between here
- 23:21Speaker 2: and L.A. Hate to make book on his chances. Everything
- 23:24Speaker 2: points to a killing, doesn't it? Mike looks like the
- 23:26Speaker 2: one who could handle it. Come on in, Compton. Come
- 23:31Speaker 2: over here.
- 23:32Speaker 6: Sit down. Here.
- 23:36Speaker 2: My name's Friday. This is Smith, my partner. Hi. Branched
- 23:39Speaker 2: out of your class, haven't you, Compton? Running in the
- 23:41Speaker 2: big time here?
- 23:42Speaker 7: What do you mean?
- 23:43Speaker 2: We haven't done anything. Robbery, kidnapping, grand theft auto. You're
- 23:46Speaker 2: moving pretty fast. Didn't Mike tell you? This guy gave
- 23:48Speaker 2: us a ride. Stopped the car and walked away. We
- 23:50Speaker 2: didn't steal the car. Thought the guy was lost. We
- 23:52Speaker 2: drove in here to get help. Let's take it from
- 23:54Speaker 2: the top. Where'd you spend the day?
- 23:55Speaker 6: Who were you with? Mike.
- 23:56Speaker 2: He stayed overnight with me. Both slept till about 2 o'clock.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Got something to eat and went to a show.
- 24:01Speaker 6: Got out about 5.
- 24:02Speaker 2: What'd you do then?
- 24:03Speaker 6: Went to this bar downtown, didn't Mike tell you?
- 24:05Speaker 2: You were with him, weren't you?
- 24:06Speaker 6: Sure I was with him. He'll tell you that.
- 24:08Speaker 2: He did. And you didn't do anything wrong, did you? No.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Then what are you worrying about? Let's forget Mike now.
- 24:13Speaker 2: You level with us, will you?
- 24:14Speaker 7: You're getting it straight.
- 24:15Speaker 6: I didn't do anything. Mike says he can't stand another beef.
- 24:17Speaker 6: Can't afford it. He's too up right now. I know that.
- 24:21Speaker 2: We believe him, Compton. Mike's done too much time. He
- 24:23Speaker 2: couldn't make another trip easy. We think he's telling us
- 24:25Speaker 2: the truth.
- 24:26Speaker 6: Well, so am I. What are you getting at, anyway?
- 24:29Speaker 2: All right, now, let's get on the bandwagon while you can.
- 24:31Speaker 2: We don't need you, Compton. If you talk or not,
- 24:32Speaker 2: it doesn't make any difference.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Just a minute. Can I talk to Mike?
- 24:35Speaker 2: All right, we'll give it a try. Frank, you want
- 24:37Speaker 2: to ask him?
- 24:37Speaker 6: Yeah, okay. Be right back.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Now, let's pick up where we left off. The bloodstains
- 24:41Speaker 2: on your clothes, stains inside the car, where'd they come from?
- 24:44Speaker 6: Mike told you, didn't he? Yeah, you tell us.
- 24:46Speaker 7: What for?
- 24:46Speaker 6: Why can't I wait till Mike gets here?
- 24:48Speaker 2: All right, what about the money? You want to explain
- 24:49Speaker 2: about that?
- 24:50Speaker 7: Nothing to explain.
- 24:51Speaker 6: I saved it.
- 24:51Speaker 2: What kind of work do you do?
- 24:52Speaker 6: Not jobs around town, any place I can find them.
- 24:55Speaker 2: You say you got up at 2, you had something
- 24:56Speaker 2: to eat, you went to a show, and you got
- 24:57Speaker 2: out about 5 o'clock, is that right?
- 24:59Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right.
- 25:00Speaker 2: When did you go to the 797 Club?
- 25:02Speaker 6: Right after the show, about 5 o'clock.
- 25:04Speaker 2: How long did you stay there?
- 25:04Speaker 6: About an hour, until about 6 o'clock.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Anything unusual happen while you were in the bar?
- 25:09Speaker 7: What do you mean?
- 25:09Speaker 2: Anything unusual, anything out of the ordinary? Oh, Mike and
- 25:12Speaker 2: me sat there, talked, had some drinks, pretty dead place.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Decided to take off for Reno. Mike's got a friend
- 25:17Speaker 2: up there, a good friend. Thought maybe he'd get the
- 25:19Speaker 2: both of us jobs.
- 25:20Speaker 6: Captain?
- 25:21Speaker 2: Captain? Yeah?
- 25:24Speaker 6: Where's Mike?
- 25:25Speaker 2: I told him you wanted to talk to him. He
- 25:27Speaker 2: said he didn't want to see you. I took him
- 25:28Speaker 2: out to feed him. Told me to tell you he'd
- 25:30Speaker 2: see you in court. What do you mean, see me
- 25:32Speaker 2: in court? I think you got it, Compton.
- 25:33Speaker 6: We told you we didn't need you. Come on, we're tired.
- 25:35Speaker 6: We're going to lock you up. What did he say?
- 25:37Speaker 6: What did he tell you?
- 25:37Speaker 2: Look, fella, we're tired. You wanted to go the hard way?
- 25:39Speaker 2: All right, you'll get the answers in court. Well, what
- 25:41Speaker 2: did he say?
- 25:41Speaker 6: What did he tell you?
- 25:42Speaker 2: Come on, let's go. You should have known better. Mike's
- 25:44Speaker 2: not going to ride your beef for you.
- 25:45Speaker 6: He was in it all the way. It's his idea
- 25:47Speaker 6: and it's his beef, not mine.
- 25:48Speaker 4: I argued with him.
- 25:49Speaker 6: I know he shouldn't have gone along crazy. Yeah, come on.
- 25:51Speaker 6: It's the truth. The whole thing's Mike's. It's his knife, too.
- 25:54Speaker 6: Met the guy in.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Some bar and he was real high, talking about some
- 25:56Speaker 2: dame he was looking for, a girlfriend. Guy bought us
- 25:59Speaker 2: a couple of drinks, had a big roll of bills.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Mike framed the whole thing. Yeah, he wanted to roll
- 26:03Speaker 2: the guy. He left, got in the guy's car and
- 26:06Speaker 2: drove with him way toward town. Mike was driving. I
- 26:09Speaker 2: didn't know where he was heading for. All of a sudden,
- 26:11Speaker 2: the guy says he wants another drink. Mike didn't want
- 26:13Speaker 2: to stop, but he was making a racket. Finally pulled
- 26:15Speaker 2: up by the 797 club.
- 26:17Speaker 3: We got out.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Then the guy changes his mind. He wants to go home.
- 26:20Speaker 6: Mike tried to talk to him, but he wouldn't listen.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Mike pulled a knife and cut him, then he slugged
- 26:23Speaker 2: the guy, and the two of us pushed him in
- 26:24Speaker 2: the car and took off. Where'd you go from there?
- 26:27Speaker 2: We cruised around until we found another car, Maroon Coupe.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Clouted that one, dumped the gray sedan, and took off
- 26:32Speaker 2: up this way. That's right.
- 26:33Speaker 6: Look, it's the truth.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I'll even tell you about the guy, what happened to him.
- 26:36Speaker 2: You got flashlights in your car? The man still alive?
- 26:38Speaker 6: I don't know. He was when we left him.
- 26:43Speaker 2: 1.45 a.m.
- 26:45Speaker 5: The Lancaster Sheriff's Substation contacted the local emergency ambulance and
- 26:49Speaker 5: they were instructed to follow our car. Along with the suspect,
- 26:52Speaker 5: Floyd Compton, Frank and I got in the car and
- 26:54Speaker 5: headed south following his directions. After several tries at locating
- 26:58Speaker 5: the spot where Mike and Compton supposedly left their victim,
- 27:01Speaker 5: we finally found where they'd parked their car on the
- 27:03Speaker 5: side of the road. We got out and Compton led
- 27:06Speaker 5: us back across a stretch of sand to a thick
- 27:08Speaker 5: clump of sagebrush about 300 yards off the highway.
- 27:11Speaker 2: The victim, Kenneth Gorman, was lying face down. His hands
- 27:14Speaker 2: and feet were tied together. It was fairly evident that
- 27:16Speaker 2: he'd lost a good deal of blood and that he
- 27:18Speaker 2: was in a state of severe shock. He was placed
- 27:20Speaker 2: on a stretcher and placed in the ambulance.
- 27:25Speaker 9: All right, that's it.
- 27:26Speaker 8: Let's go.
- 27:27Speaker 6: Be real tough. I'm sure glad he ain't dead.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah, sure. Come on.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Where are we going now?
- 27:31Speaker 2: Back to the sheriff's office. I want to take your statement.
- 27:33Speaker 6: Okay with me. There's one thing I want. One more thing.
- 27:36Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 27:36Speaker 6: That lousy Mike. I want to be there. I want
- 27:38Speaker 6: to see him. How's that?
- 27:39Speaker 2: Trying to load this thing on me. I want to
- 27:40Speaker 2: see his face when you tell him. Can't wait to
- 27:42Speaker 2: see it.
- 27:42Speaker 6: Yeah, neither can we.
- 27:51Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 27:54Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 27:56Speaker 3: On July 12th, trial was held in Superior Court, Department 84,
- 28:00Speaker 3: City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.

- 28:25Speaker 5: the bright, sunny yellow pack. And remember, in Fatima, the
- 28:28Speaker 5: difference is quality.

- 28:47Speaker 3: Penal Code, robbery in the first degree. They were also
- 28:50Speaker 3: filed on for one count of grand theft auto. They
- 28:53Speaker 3: were tried and convicted and received sentences as prescribed by law.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Kidnapping for the purpose of robbery, where bodily harm is inflicted,
- 29:01Speaker 3: is punishable by the death sentence or life imprisonment without
- 29:05Speaker 3: possibility of parole. Robbery is punishable by imprisonment from five
- 29:09Speaker 3: years to life. Grand theft auto is punishable by a
- 29:12Speaker 3: prison term of not less than one nor more than
- 29:15Speaker 3: ten years. The victim, Kenneth Gorman, finally recovered after more
- 29:19Speaker 3: than three months in the hospital.
