Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of Turn Back the
- 0:04Clock. Me.
- 0:06Wait, my name is Dylan and my Co host name is Adam.
- 0:10Adam, how's it going? Good.
- 0:11We're a little rusty and I got one of these.
- 0:13I'm like a airline pilot now. I got one of these things with a
- 0:16microphone, built in headphones. I sound a little weird to
- 0:19myself, but hopefully I sound OK on the mic here.
- 0:21I'm going to try this out because I move around when I
- 0:24talk. I guess it's the Italian in me
- 0:26or something. I'm very animated so I don't do
- 0:29as well with like a stationary mic.
- 0:30So I'm gonna try this and I can move around and the mic stays
- 0:33with me. So we'll see.
- 0:34I kind of figured sports card clubhouse force you into
- 0:39purchasing one. Yeah, It's like booted, yeah.
- 0:44We'll see how this goes, but yeah, it's it's good to see you
- 0:47again. You haven't done a video in for
- 0:49you at least a while. What's going on over there?
- 0:53Yeah, I spent like, I don't know, probably more than a
- 0:55couple weeks or about a couple weeks.
- 0:57I kind of, you know, I, I have a lot of thoughts, a lot of
- 1:02things, you know, about the hobby I wanted to talk with you
- 1:04about in general, because we don't get to talk.
- 1:08I, I know a lot of people might think that we're talking on the
- 1:10phone all the time or texting each other, but you don't text
- 1:14very many people at all. You have like you might shoot
- 1:16out in Group texts and stuff. You might have some other texts
- 1:19going on. And I, I have a couple friends
- 1:21that I text with and a couple group chats, but I'm not that
- 1:24like, you know, I'm either here or I'm doing something else.
- 1:29So it's kind of how the hobby is for me too.
- 1:31My hobby space is, it's a, it used to be a private space for
- 1:35me, right? You would, I would do my own
- 1:37thing, you know, for all those years before YouTube, you know,
- 1:41my whole life. And now that YouTube is on air,
- 1:44it's kind of opened up, obviously opened up a new world.
- 1:48But I really miss talking with you, Adam and I miss our time
- 1:53together. And I know it's, you know, we
- 1:55used to do these a lot more, but I don't feel like I don't, it's,
- 2:01it's because we'll text each other, we'll set one up.
- 2:04You know, we've set a couple of these up over the last month or
- 2:07maybe it's been two months since we've done one and then one of
- 2:10us will cancel at the last minute.
- 2:12Life gets in the way a lot. And it's not that we don't want
- 2:16to talk to each other and talk about cards and I don't, it's
- 2:19not like I don't want to do videos for myself.
- 2:21But there's a lot going on in life and sometimes you just want
- 2:24to play with your cards by yourself and organize your cards
- 2:28and do things by yourself. And there's so much content to
- 2:31consume that I find myself just turning on, you know, turning on
- 2:37sports card clubhouse and just, I could play it for like 5 hours
- 2:41straight. Greg's got a video every day
- 2:43that's an hour long. And I, and I, I swear I listen
- 2:46to every single video except for the community pickups.
- 2:50Because if I don't know you, I've never met you.
- 2:53I don't care about your collection.
- 2:55I, I don't care about it. It means nothing to me if I know
- 2:59you or you comment or we become, you know, close.
- 3:02It's like going to a card show and there's like museum set up.
- 3:05I don't care. I don't even want to look at
- 3:07those cards. I don't want to look at cards
- 3:09that aren't for sale. I don't want to look at someone
- 3:11else's cards that I have no idea who you are.
- 3:13But if I meet you and you know, you share your collection,
- 3:16that's a totally different thing.
- 3:18And then I'm totally in. But yeah, I just I, I miss
- 3:21talking with you. So yeah, any, anything going on
- 3:25in your collecting brain as of seen us since the last time we
- 3:29talked. Well, I watched same with you.
- 3:32I've, I've, I've been consuming a lot of, you know, YouTube
- 3:35videos and podcasts and I've been enjoying that.
- 3:38I I saw one this morning. I was driving around this
- 3:42morning and listening to professor sports cards had a
- 3:46bunch of guys on. He had John Mangini, Chris from
- 3:49car ladder, Chris Sewell, sponsor of sports card clubhouse
- 3:52here, a bunch of guys, Mike Geo. It was a good group and yeah,
- 3:58they were just talking about the hobby and I don't know, have you
- 4:01seen that one yet? It just came out.
- 4:03Today. I haven't seen that one yet.
- 4:05It was good. It was a good one.
- 4:07In my all honesty, I have I it's like you go through phases and
- 4:11right now I'm in the phase of no hobby drama channels.
- 4:14I haven't watched any of this any of his videos.
- 4:18I haven't watched any of the Super like any of that stuff.
- 4:22I'm just completely out of it right now.
- 4:23And like I say, I like drama sometimes it's fun, but right
- 4:26now this stage I'm completely out of it.
- 4:29So I will go back and listen to that because Mangini did say he
- 4:32was going to be on and then Greg was going to be on at some
- 4:35point. So I'll definitely go back and
- 4:37watch my friends. But right now I could care less
- 4:40about that type of content. I don't care about the hobby
- 4:43breaks. I don't care about the talk
- 4:46about all this other garbage in the industry, but like I say,
- 4:50sometimes I have a fun time. But right now I'm totally out of
- 4:54it. Don't care about it.
- 4:56Funny thing, I'm going to show a card here that I was thinking
- 5:00about this morning because I was talking to you before we started
- 5:04recording here. My mom stayed over our house
- 5:07last night, right, that she had an issue at her place that she
- 5:09lives at, so she stayed over. We had a fun time and one of the
- 5:13things we did is we got this old VCR and we have all these old
- 5:17VHS home videos that you know my dad made was it night.
- 5:22This one we watched was from 1989.
- 5:24So I was 8 years old and you know my dad had one of those
- 5:28Cam, not a camcorder. It was like one of those huge
- 5:30video recorders. You literally put a tape in the
- 5:33thing and it's like weighed 100 lbs on your shoulder and walked
- 5:37around where they put your finger in it like that.
- 5:39So, you know, he was just walking around the house with
- 5:41it. And then I took it and I did.
- 5:43It's me when I was 8 years old or yeah, 8 years old.
- 5:47And I'm going through my room and I'm, I'm just walking around
- 5:50showing like with my little like, hi, I'm Adam, you know,
- 5:53walking around with my camera and I'm seeing the posters on my
- 5:57wall. And this is so weird because
- 5:59like, I hadn't, I remember my room, but this is actually,
- 6:03whoa, I forgot about this. I had a so I had a Babe Ruth
- 6:07poster on my wall, right. And I was like, Oh my God, now I
- 6:11know why I bought this card, the Sanella Margarine 1932 Babe
- 6:17Ruth, because I had this poster on my wall when I was a kid and
- 6:22I didn't put it together. But I was like, when I first
- 6:24found out about this card, I was like, I love that photo.
- 6:27I mean, it's a great photo, but something, it was something else
- 6:29there. And I now I'm putting it
- 6:31together like, yeah, you had this on your wall when you were
- 6:33a kid. Obviously you you should get
- 6:35this card. So I've been looking at this
- 6:37today and I love this car, man. It's for those that care about
- 6:41the grade. It's PSA 3, but look how nicely
- 6:43centered it is. And I just, I've been looking at
- 6:47it because I love. It hold on that this all
- 6:50completely blows my mind. First I tell my wife all the
- 6:55time if I could do anything in life it would be to walk into my
- 7:00old childhood bedroom. It's like that one movie where
- 7:05they did the old video game Ready Player 1, where you can go
- 7:09virtual reality and go into your old bedroom and stuff.
- 7:14I can't believe that you have video of your old childhood
- 7:17room. My dad also had a camcorder and
- 7:20I turned all those old things into DVDs like 15 years ago or
- 7:26something. I sent them somewhere and they
- 7:28turn them into DVDs, but I don't have any of my room.
- 7:31I'm so freaking jealous of that. And I always wondered why you
- 7:36picked that Sanella for your favorite Babe Ruth.
- 7:39Because to me, it's it's kind of a card.
- 7:41It's kind of not a card. It's probably my absolute last
- 7:45choice Babe Ruth I'd ever own. Not that the image isn't insane,
- 7:49but now that you add that story, now it just it's Ultra's.
- 7:54That's crazy dude. Yeah.
- 7:56And oh, man, just, And I've only cracked the surface on these
- 8:00videos. Like there's a whole row of
- 8:02these tapes that I haven't seen in a long, long time, so little
- 8:05by little starting to go through them.
- 8:07And yeah, it's just weird. I had a Mike Greenwald poster on
- 8:11the wall next to a Babe Ruth poster, and then Mickey Mantle
- 8:14and Larry Bird and, oh, man, it was just very cool seeing it.
- 8:19The only thing is, you get, like, motion sickness watching
- 8:21those old videos. Yeah, at least I do because I'm
- 8:23old. Yeah.
- 8:24So I'm like, I had to take a break from watching because I
- 8:27feel like I just got off a roller coaster watching me walk
- 8:29around with the camera. I would love, I know you're not
- 8:34doing videos, but I would personally love if you could
- 8:37kind of clip some of those, find out how you can get to that and
- 8:42put it on your channel. Do a 5 minute video of little
- 8:46Adam video in his room and the Sanella poster.
- 8:49You know the the photo and man, I would eat that up.
- 8:53That would mean a lot to me as a friend to see that your old
- 8:56childhood bedroom, that would blow my mind.
- 8:59I got to do that, Yeah. Because there's a way, like you
- 9:01said, you could digitize those old VH s s and then I can be
- 9:05easy, you know, be easy to share from there.
- 9:07So, yeah, it was a good walk down memory lane looking at
- 9:10those old videos. And it is strange, like, you
- 9:13know, there's videos of my grandparents.
- 9:15And it's one thing to like, Remember, Remember your
- 9:17grandparents, but like we're the first generation or or two that
- 9:22can actually go back and like watch a video of, of their
- 9:24grandparents, you know, from 30 years ago.
- 9:26And it's like, it's great. But it's also a little like,
- 9:29whoa, this is weird. You know this is crazy. 100%
- 9:32yeah. I actually get my old photos,
- 9:35you know, of my childhood bedroom and things like that.
- 9:37And I have the scope that I use to the loop.
- 9:40I use to look at my cards and I look all around my bedroom and
- 9:44see what's in there. It's, I don't know if you guys
- 9:46have ever done that with photos, old photos.
- 9:49You take a loop to those photos and you see the coolest stuff in
- 9:52the background. It's like, 'cause you know, you
- 9:54could also take a photo of it on your phone and zoom in like
- 9:56that. But I like getting in on the
- 9:58loop and I eat that up. Man, that's insane, Adam.
- 10:02I love it. Yeah, so I've been doing that
- 10:05and again, another video I watched recently that I wanted
- 10:09to mention, which was, which is good because we're on the sports
- 10:11card clubhouse and one of the people who are nice enough to
- 10:15sponsor this channel was Chris Sewell.
- 10:18And I see, I watch a lot of his videos now and one of the one of
- 10:23the videos he did recently, it was 1.
- 10:26He talks about a collection that he bought and within the
- 10:30collection, I don't know if you saw this one, but there was a it
- 10:33was a Bobby, I think it was Bobby Jones, Bobby Jones golf
- 10:35cart. That was I think it was APSA 10,
- 10:38like rookie card or something like that.
- 10:40I'm probably getting some of it wrong.
- 10:41But the point is he didn't realize what it was worth and
- 10:44neither did the person who sold the collection.
- 10:47So it was, you know, decent sized collection.
- 10:49And when he sent it off to an auction house or fanatics or
- 10:52whatever it was to sell it, they give a value on what those are,
- 10:56you know, when they auction it off.
- 10:57And it turned out that like the Bobby Jones card was worth
- 11:00thousands and thousands of dollars.
- 11:02And so and he said he has a clause in when he buys a
- 11:06collection, he has a specific clause where if this type of
- 11:09thing happens, where there's a card that neither the buyer or
- 11:12the seller knew was worth that much, it turns out it was, he
- 11:16will actually go back and pay that the seller more money.
- 11:21That's and you know, I recommend the video.
- 11:23I'll try to find a link and put it in this, but that's AI mean.
- 11:26Great example of a a dealer who is ethical.
- 11:30And I mean, how many dealers or sellers in this hobby do you
- 11:34think would have done that? You know, would have gone back
- 11:36and said, Hey, this is worth way more than I paid you.
- 11:39I don't think that many. So I, I thought I wanted to
- 11:41highlight that because I thought that was pretty cool.
- 11:43Yeah, I do. That's pretty stand up right
- 11:47there that that I really like Chris and now that he has the
- 11:50podcast I'm getting cuz I never watched his videos before cuz
- 11:53I'm a type of guy. I just, I don't really care
- 11:56about, It's not that I don't care about dealers as humans, I
- 11:59just don't care what dealers have to say.
- 12:01I've always talked about that because they're buying cards
- 12:04that have irrelevance to me and their thoughts are irrelevant to
- 12:09me as a collector because they're buying them to sell
- 12:12them. They're buying the flip, they're
- 12:14purchasing cards at prices that I, I don't care about anything
- 12:18that they really have to say. But Chris, on the other hand,
- 12:22I've been really loving that weekly podcast They're putting
- 12:26out him and Snowman. And I have had an incredible
- 12:29experience sending cards to CIA, sending like cards that I've
- 12:34always wanted to sell in Big Lots like, you know, 1955 Bowman
- 12:41huge, like 300 nineteen 58 tops, you know, I've had forever.
- 12:45And I just thinking like one day maybe I'll put the set together
- 12:48if I ever get into set building and I'm just going to sell them
- 12:51on. They put all these in lots and
- 12:53I've had such great experience. So I do watch all of their shows
- 12:58and that's kind of, you know, that's a topic I kind of had in
- 13:01my brain. But we won't go down that right
- 13:03now because we got some more things to say.
- 13:04But the whole dealer concept and dealers, you know, buying cards
- 13:09and then marking them up and buying them from each other like
- 13:13there's I think it's always been going on.
- 13:15But yeah, Needless to say, that's a cool story.
- 13:18I will go back and watch that for sure.
- 13:23Oh yeah, go ahead. Sorry.
- 13:24I I wanted to ask you, so you were in the PSA magazine and I
- 13:31was blown away. Now I don't have APSA membership
- 13:34anymore. I had it for one year and I was
- 13:37getting all the magazines and they're super cool.
- 13:39While you were in the magazine, you had like A7 page spread in
- 13:44there about your Tom Brady collection and you sent me
- 13:48photos of the magazine and then I zoomed in and I read.
- 13:51I read the entire article. It didn't die if my memory
- 13:55serves me. I read it like a month ago.
- 13:57It didn't dive into you personally too much.
- 14:01I felt like that was kind of lacking.
- 14:03I was really hoping that they would really pick your brain
- 14:05about your collecting experience and stuff, but maybe I'm wrong.
- 14:09Tell us about the article and maybe you have some insights and
- 14:12can share a little bit about it. Yeah, it they did AI mean it was
- 14:16funny because it came together very quickly.
- 14:18You know, the the guy did I think a great job.
- 14:22He reached out to me like he called me and I didn't realize
- 14:26that this was going to be like the one phone call they were
- 14:28going to use for the article. So I thought it was just like a
- 14:31quick thing. Yeah.
- 14:32So I wasn't really prepared, but turned out we did a phone call
- 14:35and just talked. And basically that turned into
- 14:38the article. Me, you know, So it was one time
- 14:41thing and yeah, it came out good.
- 14:43It was basically highlighting on the PSA set registry.
- 14:46I completed the Tom Brady Bass rookie set 44 cards and they did
- 14:53an article about that. It was December 2025 edition
- 14:56with Bo Jackson on the cover. So yeah, it was, it was cool.
- 15:00It was fun. I, I talked a little bit about
- 15:02myself, but a lot of it, you know, I, I wanted to, one of the
- 15:05things I wanted to, to do with that opportunity is to highlight
- 15:09the Pacific cards of the Brady 44.
- 15:12There's eleven of them. And I feel like those cards take
- 15:16a back seat to a lot of the other ones in the catalog.
- 15:19So I steered a lot of the conversation towards, you know,
- 15:22Pacific Brady rookie cards and I mentioned Mike Kramer and, you
- 15:28know, I kind of just steered things where I wanted it to go
- 15:31and highlight. I didn't really want to talk too
- 15:32much about myself. I wanted to talk more about
- 15:35collecting and the cards and Pacific Mike Kramer.
- 15:38And I was happy to hear I connected the Adam, his name was
- 15:45Adam from PSA with Mike Kramer after our article, because, you
- 15:50know, Mike's been on my channel before.
- 15:52So I had his information and I connected the two.
- 15:55And it turned out there's going to be another article because of
- 15:58that about Mike Kramer in, in Pacific cards in the, in an
- 16:02upcoming PSA magazine. So that for me that that was the
- 16:05coolest part about it because I'm not, you know, I'm not
- 16:08someone who wants to like, get my name out there, any of that
- 16:10stuff. I, I think I just told you, I
- 16:13haven't even told really anyone about it other than a few you
- 16:15guys, you know, like you and Greg and Mike.
- 16:18But yeah, I haven't really highlighted too much of it, but
- 16:21it was cool. I just, you know, it's nice.
- 16:23I like seeing collector content in the magazine because I think
- 16:27that is an area where I like to see more content.
- 16:29So it was fun, you know, and it's a cool little collector's
- 16:32piece. I have a few of the copies, you
- 16:35know, I, I get one in the mail and then I ordered a few other.
- 16:38There's like variation covers. So I ordered a couple different
- 16:40variation covers off of eBay. And so I got, you know, a
- 16:43handful of the, the, the magazines.
- 16:46And someday maybe, you know, I'll show my kids when they're a
- 16:49little older, the article or whatever.
- 16:50Yeah, something like. That I I think maybe what really
- 16:52struck me was there's no photo of you.
- 16:54I think I remember specifically going where.
- 16:57Why don't they have a photo of the collector here?
- 16:59I don't want any of that. I didn't even want to use my
- 17:01last name, honestly. I didn't want to just use
- 17:03Splendid. But they, you know, I think for
- 17:05article that you got to use someone's name.
- 17:06So I don't yeah, I didn't want any of that stuff.
- 17:09So. And don't get me wrong, it was a
- 17:10great, I mean, I was like AI, you know, being your friend.
- 17:13I was like so proud. I'm like, yeah, I, I, I mean, I
- 17:17know it's APSA magazine. Some people hate PSA, but PSA
- 17:20changed the way I collect baseball cards.
- 17:22I wouldn't be collecting cards if it wasn't for grading itself.
- 17:25So for me, I was really proud. I was really stoked to see the
- 17:28fact that they did have a collector on there and he was
- 17:31my, he's my friend from turn back the clock.
- 17:33I just, I was really freaking stoked and I wish I had the
- 17:37magazine cuz I would take a page and I'd frame it up and put it
- 17:39on my wall. Well, I'll give you 1 special.
- 17:42Day OK good I'll bring one cuz OK good you can get them on eBay
- 17:45like aftermarket for whatever couple 10 bucks or.
- 17:48Something dude, that's what I should do.
- 17:49I should just go buy one I. Don't know what I got, I got
- 17:52like 5 copies. I'll give you 1 when I see.
- 17:53You someday West Coast cartel. Yeah, You know what was
- 17:56interesting too with that article?
- 17:58You know, I sent them some pictures of the of the cards,
- 18:01you know, and a lot of them were already on the PSA website, so
- 18:03they just pulled the scans off. But a lot of the cards they use,
- 18:07like maybe 3 or 4 of them weren't the highest grade.
- 18:10You know, there's like PSA 5 Brady rookie in there.
- 18:13When I showed on this channel here, I crossed over a bunch of
- 18:17Beckett slabs. They actually highlighted those.
- 18:20So like, so, you know, showing a Beckett card, they didn't show
- 18:23this, but it was like a Beckett, you know, 8.5 that went down to
- 18:27A5 and they showed the five on the article.
- 18:30So it was kind of ironic, right? Like they didn't, I don't even
- 18:32think they put that together, but.
- 18:34And was that prior to them buying Beckett?
- 18:36I can't remember. It's probably right in the zone,
- 18:38right? Yeah, that's a good question.
- 18:40It might have been right around that time.
- 18:41I don't know. I don't know.
- 18:42Yeah, I'd have to look, but yeah, it was fun, you know, fun
- 18:45little thing. And like I said, it's cool to
- 18:48just have the magazine to show my, you know, family here and
- 18:51there, so. Look, who would have thought,
- 18:54you know, before you got on YouTube, all those years
- 18:57collecting, who would have ever thought you would have been in a
- 19:00collecting magazine? That's really, really cool.
- 19:04Not me, I'll tell you that. Yeah, I still need to get.
- 19:08I still need to get that magazine that I was in that John
- 19:12Newman wrote an epic article about me like 4 years ago from
- 19:16you cuz I never received a copy. I still don't.
- 19:20Have I have a copy? And so when I see you again, I'm
- 19:24gonna give you that one too. I got a couple.
- 19:25Magazines hold you to it, even if they're just Xerox pages.
- 19:28That's fine, I can print that up.
- 19:30That's all good. So yeah, PSA, obviously a lot of
- 19:33criticism for PSA and, and a lot of it's deserved, but yeah, you
- 19:37got a highlight when you know, they made, they made the IT, it
- 19:40was a fun thing for me. So it made my hobby experience
- 19:42more fun and I'm happy it made the magazine.
- 19:45So and I, I always enjoy the magazine.
- 19:47You know, it's not why I subscribe, so to speak, like or
- 19:50whatever. I renew my membership because it
- 19:52comes with card ladder, it comes with the magazine and then I
- 19:56have, I'm not really submitting cards, but I guess I could if I
- 19:59if I wanted to. So it's something I keep
- 20:01renewing. I don't know if I'll renew it
- 20:02forever, but at least for now I I renewed it for another year
- 20:05so. Well, I it's a no brainer for me
- 20:08next year. I didn't know that it came with
- 20:10free card ladder. I spent 200 bucks on card ladder
- 20:13by itself. What is PSAA?
- 20:16Little bit more than that and I can, you know, it's free.
- 20:19I think it was 200. They just renewed 200 bucks for
- 20:23a year. You get the magazine every month
- 20:25and then you get card Ladder and then obviously you get access.
- 20:28To you get to submit. Grading, grading, submitting and
- 20:30all that stuff. So yeah, if you're someone who
- 20:32gets card ladder anyway, it might make sense.
- 20:35It's AI, like the magazine. It's cool.
- 20:36I'm definitely gonna get back on board with that for sure.
- 20:40Yep. So what else?
- 20:42What else going on I'm trying? To think, well, last time we
- 20:45talked, you you told me a television show to watch a
- 20:49series, and it's called Paradise.
- 20:50Yeah. And me and my wife watched it.
- 20:53We absolutely loved it. We liked the second season
- 20:56better than the first season. I think.
- 20:58You know, when they got into the house with Elvis in that, I
- 21:02forgot what her name is, but super famous actress.
- 21:05It was super good. So we blazed, we blazed through
- 21:08it in like probably a week and a half.
- 21:09Done. So good.
- 21:10I'm glad, man. I was wondering if you were
- 21:12going to watch that. And yeah, season 2 is just
- 21:14unbelievable. Really good and it's it's
- 21:17leading into a third season now that yeah, it's getting wild
- 21:21now. Crazy so.
- 21:22Yeah, yeah. Where they really left the
- 21:24carrot there I was like, gosh, come on.
- 21:26Man, it'll wait it like another year.
- 21:28Yeah, I'll have to remind me that we were even watching the
- 21:31show. That's a problem with those lead
- 21:33ONS, like you forget you're watching them and then you're
- 21:36whatever. I know.
- 21:38So what have you been up to in the hobby lately as far as your
- 21:41card collecting journey? Are you buying cards?
- 21:44Pickups. What are you doing behind the
- 21:47scenes over there? I have, I have bought a few
- 21:49cards. Definitely not at the volume
- 21:53that was, I mean from like 2021 to 2025 or like, yeah, midway
- 22:01through 2025, man, I was buying, I bought a lot, you know, I
- 22:04bought a lot. So now I've bought a few good
- 22:08sized cards, good Pedro Martinez cards that I made my own custom
- 22:13labels for like even different than the ones I already had with
- 22:17Mac Pro. So I think they're coming in the
- 22:20mail today. Actually, it's just for I got 2
- 22:23Pedro Martinez new cards that I created their own unique labels
- 22:28for. So I gotta before I show those,
- 22:31I got to get them in the in the in the Mac Pros and all ready to
- 22:35go. But yeah, not, not a lot.
- 22:38I mean, maybe maybe one card a month type thing.
- 22:41Not not much at all. And that's probably the way I'll
- 22:43keep it. You know, there's another
- 22:47company out there, Auction wired that I think they're also going
- 22:51to be a sponsor of Sports card Clubhouse here coming up.
- 22:55I don't know if I should announce that yet, but you know,
- 22:57I think, I think, I think they are.
- 22:59And I'm going to start using them not just because of that,
- 23:02but because I had there's like with Pedro Martinez, I got like
- 23:073 or 4 cards of his that I still have not been able to track
- 23:12down. And I figure out maybe I'm
- 23:15missing them. I don't think they've sold, but
- 23:16like I don't want to miss them when they come up because it's
- 23:18been years now. So I'm going to set like a saved
- 23:21search with the auction houses and stuff like that that maybe
- 23:25they'll pop up on because I don't really monitor well.
- 23:27I mean, I have eBay safe searches, some of them still,
- 23:30but like Fanatics Marketplace for fanatics collect a lot of
- 23:34carts sell there now or like you'll see it's a golden sale or
- 23:38they'll be all these auction houses.
- 23:39So I'm going to create an account with them because I
- 23:43wanna, you know, just make sure I don't miss them when they come
- 23:46up. But other than that, you know,
- 23:47there's not a ton of cards that I'm looking for.
- 23:49Maybe there's 10 total that are on my list that if they pop up,
- 23:53I'll, I'll go after them. But yeah, I haven't been doing a
- 23:56lot of volume lately. So you sound mega focused like
- 24:00there's no more there's no more just shooting darts at the board
- 24:04or like trying a new lane. You're you're dialed in.
- 24:08Yeah. And do you feel like you're
- 24:10going to be dialed in? This is it?
- 24:13Or do you see a time that maybe you'll all right, I'm going to
- 24:16start collecting this guy over here.
- 24:18Or do you think this is it? Like you've got your, you got
- 24:21your guys, you got your focus, you got your binders dialed in
- 24:26and it and it's and you're set. It's hard to say for sure, but
- 24:31right now I feel yes. Like, I feel like I, I've come
- 24:35to a point I've, I've kind of dabbled with some things and,
- 24:38you know, bought and sold certain things.
- 24:41But the core stuff, you know, I, I don't see myself veering away
- 24:44from like, you know, I, I completed the Tom Brady rookie
- 24:47set. I don't see myself going like I
- 24:49need to upgrade that. You know, they all look good.
- 24:52They look the way I want regardless of the number on
- 24:54them. So I'm good there.
- 24:57Yeah. I, I don't really see me.
- 24:59I can't imagine myself going into a different lane at this
- 25:01point. Maybe I will, but right now it
- 25:04just feels like I found what I want to collect and the type of
- 25:08the size collection that I want to have.
- 25:10And yeah, I think I'm feeling pretty good about it.
- 25:13And now it's just kind of enjoying what I have.
- 25:16And then if those big cards that I'm looking for come along,
- 25:20maybe not big, but they're just rare and they, you don't see
- 25:23them much. They come along.
- 25:24I'm going to, I'll go after them hard.
- 25:26But other than that, I'm not just going to like buy something
- 25:28to buy something. I don't really feel like I, I
- 25:31got to buy something on eBay this month or this week.
- 25:34I'm OK not buying. So I I'm happy with the
- 25:37collection. There's cards that I haven't
- 25:38even like processed in my collection yet.
- 25:40I got I'm looking at a couple cards.
- 25:42Here. I got to put in Mac Pros, I got
- 25:44a label and stuff, so I got plenty to do without buying
- 25:47anything new and. I you know.
- 25:50Sold them cards too so. Let's talk about that process
- 25:53you got. So we all have a process and
- 25:56cards come in. You know, I think way back in
- 25:58the day, my process was pretty simple.
- 26:02I put it in a new thing. I have these zip lock bags.
- 26:05Back in the day they had, you know, before they had like
- 26:08perfect fit sleeves. This is decades ago.
- 26:10And I would, I have these perfect zip lock bags I would
- 26:13buy at the local store back in California and I would put my
- 26:17graded card in there, zip it in and I'd stack it up with all the
- 26:20rest. But now the process is much
- 26:23deeper. So tell me about your process
- 26:25when a card comes in, a perfect Pedro card comes in.
- 26:28Tell me about it. Yeah, And, and I actually have a
- 26:30question for you on this that I mean ask you.
- 26:32OK, so I get I get a new card again, I'm not really sending
- 26:36cards into any grading company. So what I'm doing, I'm just
- 26:39getting a card in and then if it qualifies for its own custom
- 26:44label, like the two that I recently bought, then I reach
- 26:47out to Mac Pro and I get I work with someone there.
- 26:51Kim is great to work with. Just design these new labels.
- 26:55So if I use an existing one, I already have a bunch of those.
- 26:58So I'll put the put the label in, seal it up, put a little
- 27:02sticker on it, and then I'm good to go.
- 27:04Or then I'll, you know, if I'll wait for the custom label to
- 27:08come in. I love the labels, you know
- 27:09that? Are you are you are for your
- 27:13your Pedro labels? Are you going in detail of pack
- 27:16pull odds? What are you putting on those
- 27:18labels because you said you could just slap one on there.
- 27:21You used to just have a splendid sports one, but I you were you
- 27:24started to add some information on a lot of these, yes.
- 27:27I'm glad you mentioned that. So I do, I do wanna do and
- 27:29that's, I got like a list of cards that I wanna, it takes
- 27:32some time, which, you know, but basically I want to create a
- 27:35label cuz you're, you're right. I wanna, I want the, the
- 27:39information on the card. It's not always like pack odds,
- 27:42but it's just something that I want to remember about that
- 27:45card. And also like with some of these
- 27:4790s cards, I need to remind myself what year it's from what
- 27:50set, because a lot of times I don't always know.
- 27:53I mean, there's just so many different parallels and stuff
- 27:55like that. So that's one of the reasons
- 27:59they, they came up with those like stickers that I've seen.
- 28:02John Mangini bought a bun and they look awesome.
- 28:04I mean, like his are like refractor stickers, but for me,
- 28:07that's not, I don't, I want the information of the card on the
- 28:12on the label. That's like for me, that's the
- 28:13biggest, that's the biggest reason I like PSA cards.
- 28:17Not the grade, but I like, I like that museum quality of, of
- 28:21the information on the card. And now that I can create my own
- 28:24information and and customize it to what I want rather than what
- 28:27PSA determines, I like that even better.
- 28:30So, yeah, coming up with the information I want to say about
- 28:34that card, something that makes it maybe it's the first of
- 28:37something, something that makes it cool to me.
- 28:40And if, you know, someone came over looking at my collection,
- 28:43having that information on the label that I can then reference
- 28:47and tell the story of the card. That's that's what I really
- 28:49enjoy now. So one question I have for you
- 28:52though is I'm before. Hold on before you ask me that.
- 28:56So the label thing about people coming over and looking at our
- 28:59cards. It doesn't happen very often.
- 29:01Either it never ever happens, right?
- 29:02It's like once a year someone will come over and the chances
- 29:05of them even noticing the label and reading about it.
- 29:08But that isn't the point. The point is you're you're
- 29:11making this museum that you have this dream of people coming
- 29:16over. A museum that no one's ever
- 29:18gonna go to. No one's.
- 29:18Ever gonna see no one ever cares about it, you know, even if but.
- 29:24It's but I like to imagine it. It's a dream in my head.
- 29:27I have this dream that like someday they're all going to
- 29:30come over and they're all going to and it's going to be this
- 29:32grand thing where we're and it's probably never going to happen.
- 29:36I'm going to be over at least my.
- 29:37Kids, because they're my kids. They're forced to.
- 29:39Someday, when they're a little older, I'm going to force them
- 29:42through the museum they have. They're like, dad, look at this
- 29:45pack pull this thing was one in 78,000 packs.
- 29:48That's incredible. You're like this.
- 29:50Was the first, first refractor I didn't know.
- 29:52Yeah, that's fantastic. I hope.
- 29:55I mean, that would be cool if they were really into it, but
- 29:57somebody might be someday. At least I know I'll I'll always
- 30:00be into it so. But it makes so much sense to me
- 30:03too. I'm the same way.
- 30:04If we're making this just like, you know, you look at John
- 30:07Mangini's house, like, is he really making that for other
- 30:09people? No, he's making it for himself.
- 30:11We're making these for ourselves with this dream of a line out
- 30:14the door of people coming into your room and looking at these
- 30:17things. And like, I'm with you.
- 30:19I don't want my label to just say double the vintage baseball
- 30:23cards. I want the label to say the
- 30:25information of all the stuff I want to know about the card
- 30:28itself. And it's like not just for me
- 30:31because I do need it. Because you look up a card and
- 30:33you're like, what the heck is this?
- 30:35I can't read the backs anymore. I can't read the the the date.
- 30:38We all can't over 40 years old. You're just doomed.
- 30:42Once you have 45, it's like, you know you, you definitely need a
- 30:45microscope to look at the date and to have that info.
- 30:49It's just that it, that's what I love about it and that's why I
- 30:52always like PSA. Same reason.
- 30:55It wasn't for anything else, you know, in the beginning.
- 30:57It was for the grading system that made me feel like I wasn't
- 31:02getting ripped off. As I said from day one, it was a
- 31:04great equalizer for me, but it was so much more than that, the
- 31:08presentation and all that. So I love that.
- 31:10So go ahead with your question, Adam.
- 31:12Sorry, the question was about a scanner.
- 31:14So one of the things I've been thinking about doing is you know
- 31:17what's nice? Again, nice thing about PSA is
- 31:19when you get a card graded through them, at least in the
- 31:21last few years, there's a nice scan of the card online already
- 31:24that you could download or use but with.
- 31:27Which sometimes sometimes suck as well.
- 31:30Like, yeah, sometimes they're out of focus or the the card's
- 31:33tilted in the PSA holder and you're like, it just makes it
- 31:36look off centered. Or they just, sometimes they
- 31:38just rush it. They do a crappy job.
- 31:40The color's not right. So go ahead.
- 31:42Yeah. But at least they do something,
- 31:45you know, compared to the other grading companies.
- 31:47I don't even think there's Beckett.
- 31:49I don't even know if they do photos.
- 31:50But anyway, for like a Mac Pro, because that's a lot of my
- 31:54collection now, a lot of the cards I'm getting, I'm not
- 31:56grading or anything. I'm putting them in those Mac
- 31:58Pros. What's the best scanner?
- 32:00Do you do you have a a recommendation or?
- 32:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What I.
- 32:05Should do with that. I have it right here.
- 32:07See so funny because I haven't been able to scan in like a year
- 32:09because for whatever reason it's all my it's my wife's scanner.
- 32:12I used to have a splitter and it was into my computer and I could
- 32:16I was just scanning non-stop. Well, for whatever reason, it's
- 32:19not working on my computer anymore and I'm not going to sit
- 32:21at her computer and scan cards. So now I just have this like
- 32:24photo box and I just take photos.
- 32:26I don't really care they're for myself, but I'll tell you what
- 32:30it is. It's the best scanner you can
- 32:31get. It's the Epson model.
- 32:37It has a name, Epson Perfection V600 photo.
- 32:43So my wife's a professional artist, a professional graphic
- 32:48designer. She worked for companies for a
- 32:50decade plus. Now she just does her own stuff.
- 32:53But that scanner is top of the line and I don't even know if
- 32:57they make it anymore. You might have to buy it used,
- 33:00you know, refurbished, but that scanner is gold.
- 33:04You could scan and make, you know, zoom in to 1,000,000
- 33:07pixels. It's the best scanner and it's
- 33:10pretty fast, easy to work with. And then for me, I've been using
- 33:15for like especially for our custom made, you know, for
- 33:19modern cards to get the shine because when you scan you get no
- 33:23shine. It's just flat, right.
- 33:24I've been taking photos and that's what I've been using for
- 33:28my card ladder because the only reason I have card ladder is to
- 33:34have my collection in my pocket in all the photos so I can make
- 33:37the lighting where it's actually very refractor.
- 33:41You know, sometimes you still get a picture of your cell phone
- 33:43in the background of the car, you know, because you always get
- 33:46the the bounce back and there's, there's almost no way to it's
- 33:50hard to get away from that. But for the most part, I love it
- 33:55because you can get the shine that actually looks good instead
- 33:59of the flat pictures that a scan's going to give you.
- 34:02But for vintage cards, the scanning's insane.
- 34:04And for any just flat base cards or paper cards, I guess they
- 34:09call them, yeah, that that scanner is the way to go for
- 34:12sure. OK, yeah, cuz yeah, that's
- 34:15right. It does take away the shine.
- 34:16That's good. And a lot of the cards that a
- 34:17lot of the cards that I want to do that for are like 90s cards,
- 34:21early 2000s where one of the nicest features about them is
- 34:23that shine. So.
- 34:25I have to think that's yeah, you gotta, I I would recommend like
- 34:29they have these like white boxes.
- 34:32I'll just grab it so you could see some stuff.
- 34:35Cuz that's the problem I have too with the with the iPhone, I
- 34:38need one of those boxes because like I can't get the lighting
- 34:41right and I get this thing collections and stuff.
- 34:44I use, I use this for everything.
- 34:45This is actually my wife's. And I go, you know, I'm going to
- 34:47try that and it works amazing. Then you can, you know, you set
- 34:52it up, you put your, your, you know, your lighting, your light
- 34:56bar right here. Take a photo of it.
- 34:58And then there's no like shadows and you could, you know, play
- 35:02with that. To me, I find this to be the
- 35:05best for modern cards. And yeah, you want to see the
- 35:09shine. That's the entire point, right?
- 35:11So it's called the white box. You can get them on like Amazon
- 35:14and stuff. I don't know what it's called,
- 35:16but yeah, it's on Amazon. It's.
- 35:17All right, photo box. Photo box.
- 35:20That's right. OK.
- 35:21Like that. So let me talk about what I've
- 35:25been doing, you know, cuz I haven't been posting videos not
- 35:28like 10 days in YouTube world or 12 days whatever it's been is
- 35:32like 7 years in like the real world.
- 35:35Like when you haven't posted a video, right, right when you're
- 35:38sourcing, when your guy like me, where I've been pretty
- 35:40consistent, like I'll pop a video up at least, you know,
- 35:44once every four days or something.
- 35:46Just I push play and show some cards that come in or what have
- 35:49you. But when you go like 10 days,
- 35:52anyone else there out there making content understands this?
- 35:55It's like it's like an eternity. It's like it's been like 5
- 35:59years. Well, I decided myself to from
- 36:04inspiration from basically who I always get inspired by Shane
- 36:09Shoebox legends to make a countdown of.
- 36:12And I know everyone does this at the end of the year, they do
- 36:15their top 50 cards, 25 cards based on value or favorites.
- 36:20Well, I decided to do a countdown based on my favorite
- 36:25cards. And so I'm reason I'm bringing
- 36:28this up is because I found it very fascinating doing this
- 36:31process. And I, and I kind of encourage
- 36:33others to kind of think about in this way, even if you're not
- 36:35doing a video, just making the list.
- 36:38It's been probably a four month process of me making this list
- 36:43because I have, you know, roughly 1300 graded cards, give
- 36:47or take 100 and to. And I'm not making this list to
- 36:54find out cards I want to sell because I have some cards that I
- 36:58could sell and I have a little mini stack for CIA that I keep
- 37:01forgetting to send in. And I have things like that, but
- 37:04I wanted to make this to really keep my focus on where I want my
- 37:09money to go because I have a lot of collections going and I, and
- 37:13just recently a little sidetrack is what else while I've been
- 37:17doing this, I've never, never completed my binder.
- 37:22I don't know what you call this thing right here, but on a
- 37:26binder you have the side of the binder and a lot of guys you
- 37:30know have their binders stored. Well my binders go in boxes and
- 37:34I have all my binders have information on the side or my
- 37:38boxes to tell me what's in those binders.
- 37:40Well I finally doing this countdown reorganized my entire
- 37:46collection and my wife sat down with me one night for like 3
- 37:50hours and we completed my run of binder side of my binders and
- 37:56the side of my boxes. I actually put my actual cards
- 38:00that are inside the boxes. So I have like 39 boxes or 39
- 38:04binders and every single one of them is labeled with a number if
- 38:09they're part of like this is 68 and 69 go in here.
- 38:12And these are my 2 actual cards. And I have player ones where,
- 38:18you know, they're like my Aaron Judge and I had this before and
- 38:22I just have two cards from my Aaron Judge collection and this
- 38:25is 2022 and 23. The only cards that make the
- 38:29binder, they go in here. While doing this countdown, I
- 38:34found I'm like trying to figure out how am I going to do this
- 38:37countdown because I have 1300 cards that I love, right?
- 38:41How am I going to narrow down to my top 100?
- 38:43Well, I started the top, I started what is my all time
- 38:46favorite and I work my way down and when I got to #50 it was
- 38:52pretty easy, you know, not easy to pick my top 50, but kind of
- 38:56like that was the easiest part. My top 50, like top 50 favorite.
- 39:01Nothing values just happened to be stance.
- 39:04A lot of my big cards go to the top because that's just how it
- 39:07works for me and my collecting expensive cards or mean a lot,
- 39:11but there's a lot I what I didn't do on purpose was put any
- 39:15of my meaningful cards that just have a tant like a, you know, I
- 39:22don't want to say spiritual meaning, but like like a card
- 39:24that I got from you from your uncle's collection.
- 39:28I didn't put that on the list. I didn't put cards that I
- 39:31received as gifts on the list whatsoever.
- 39:34I completely disregarded those. I didn't put some of my favorite
- 39:38pack pull cards of my own that on the list.
- 39:41I kept those separate because those are automatically in my
- 39:45top 100 cards, but I don't want to include them on this list
- 39:49because this list is my top favorite cards that are that are
- 39:55just purely off the cards themselves.
- 39:57No story behind the cards, even though some of them, they all
- 40:00have stories behind them, but I didn't want to include that.
- 40:03So I made the list. I know it's a long talk, but I
- 40:07made this list and I made. I got to 50 and I go after that
- 40:10I go. How do I rank 1958 Topps
- 40:15Clemente versus a 1971 Topps Clemente versus a 1972 Topps
- 40:21Clemente versus a 1958 Topps Ted Williams versus a 1954 Topps Ted
- 40:26Williams? I, I, I, I said, how can I even
- 40:30rank those? There's no chance.
- 40:33So once I got to 50, I go, all right, how am I going to, how am
- 40:37I going to close this out? Because I, I can't even go
- 40:39beyond this. So I decided to do, I'm going to
- 40:43do a whole video on my own talking about this discussion
- 40:46again. Well, I decided to stop at 62
- 40:50and when I got to 62, I could pick my top 62.
- 40:54And I did it for a reason that you know, will come to fruition
- 41:00on my channel. But everything below 62 is like
- 41:05equal. I couldn't choose after that.
- 41:08I just could not choose. I I my brain would not let me
- 41:13choose any of my cards above the others.
- 41:16And I know a lot of guys out there have these little
- 41:18collections and they only want to have 100 of their greatest
- 41:21cards. Well, I've decided to narrow my
- 41:26favorites to 62, but then everything below that I can't
- 41:31rank. I mentally couldn't rank any of
- 41:34them, and I found that fascinating to my brain.
- 41:37I found it so cool because I realized that I loved all the
- 41:41cards below that 62 all equally. I love my, you know, 55 Tops
- 41:49Jackie Robinson, the same as I love my 1971 Tops Clemente.
- 41:55I could not put one ahead of the other and that goes for every
- 41:59car below #62 and I just could. I just thought it was so cool
- 42:07that I have all these cards below that, that they're just
- 42:10all inclusive. And how I, what I realized is
- 42:14that all the ones below that mean just as much, but they,
- 42:18they all have this place in my collection.
- 42:20And now that I finished these binders and I made the binder
- 42:24pages with my wife and finally, because I had like 15 that I
- 42:27hadn't made all these years because I wasn't sure how I
- 42:31wanted to organize my collection.
- 42:34Well, since I made it, I, I, I've so, so focused.
- 42:41My collection is crazy, crazy focused.
- 42:43Like you were talking. Cars don't just come into my
- 42:46collection Willy nilly anymore. I'm not even going on eBay and
- 42:50looking to see what's ending soonest.
- 42:53Everything that comes into my collection has to fit in a
- 42:57binder, has to fit in this perfect position, but it doesn't
- 43:00have to make the top 62. I don't buy cards that have to
- 43:04fit my top 62. It just has to fit my top 1300,
- 43:09my all the rest of my favorites. And I am a guy that wants a
- 43:14giant collection and I'll continue to have a giant
- 43:17collection and I can love all the cards below 62 equally.
- 43:22And that's what I found fascinating.
- 43:24Guys like Mangini, they hate list, they love all their cards
- 43:27equally. They're like you can't rank your
- 43:30kids. Well, I can rank my cards, but I
- 43:32found out that I can't rank past 62.
- 43:35Now maybe, maybe in the future I'll be able to extend that to
- 43:3875, extend it to 100 as slowly things rise up to the top.
- 43:44But why I did this is because and why I'm going to do a video
- 43:47on this. I can a it gives you something
- 43:49to do for videos. I'm excited to do like 10 cards
- 43:53every video. And maybe this series is going
- 43:55to take me, you know, six months to do.
- 43:58Maybe it takes me six weeks, I don't know.
- 44:00But every year I'm going to do this ranking and Shane does it
- 44:05and things move in and out of this list and out of this
- 44:08ranking category. And I can already see cards
- 44:11going up the list or going down the list.
- 44:15Like a lot of these cards are like Mike Trout, Aaron Judge,
- 44:20couple Show Haze in there. You know, these cards are going
- 44:24to definitely move up the list and down the list as far as
- 44:27their performance because the more these guys perform on the
- 44:30field and the better. Like Mike Trout's having a great
- 44:33season. So a lot of his cards made this
- 44:35list because I've been collecting them.
- 44:37You know, he was the first guy collected an ultra modern.
- 44:41You know what, after he crashed during that big crash, I started
- 44:45buying his cards and, and those cards are creeping up this list
- 44:50and I was really stoked that they are going up and up on this
- 44:5462, my top 62 cards list. And then then if he gets hurt, I
- 44:58can definitely see those cards coming a lot of them coming off
- 45:01the list and I just, I found it so fun.
- 45:05So I cannot wait. I have the list printed.
- 45:09I, I done with it. It's, it's finished.
- 45:13I'm excited to share that. So that's what I've been up to
- 45:16instead of making videos, random videos of pickups.
- 45:19Cause like you, I'm the only cards I'm picking up are cards
- 45:22that are going into these binders and they're not top 62
- 45:26cards. They're just they're little
- 45:27cards and I'm back into that $2550 bread and butter range
- 45:31that I've always loved. I haven't picked up any big
- 45:34cards in quite a while really. And it's been fun, like spending
- 45:39about 500 bucks a month on cards but selling about $1500 a month
- 45:45in cards and cards that don't even make my top 1300 list.
- 45:49So yeah, that's where I've been at it.
- 45:52I cannot wait to do the list, and when I share the cards
- 45:55individually, I can't wait. So yeah, that's kind of what
- 45:59I've been up to. So that's a great preview over
- 46:01on Double D Vintage baseball cards on YouTube here.
- 46:04Keep an eye out for those videos coming out.
- 46:06I'm looking forward to that. I do have a couple quick
- 46:08questions for you based on what you just said.
- 46:10I wrote a couple notes because I jogged in my head.
- 46:14Couple things I was going to ask you.
- 46:16You mentioned Aaron Judge, specifically Otani.
- 46:20Now a lot of their cards have gone up significantly in value.
- 46:24I know you've been collecting these guys for a decent amount
- 46:27of time. Do you have any Otani and Judge
- 46:30cards that you haven't sold that you still have in your
- 46:31collection that have gone up a lot in value that you are
- 46:35considering selling or are you holding?
- 46:37Everything you have now is basically long term hold with
- 46:40those guys. Everything I have now except for
- 46:44two more, I have two more Otani Bowman rookie cards.
- 46:49Oh, I have 3, but I have two that I want to sell.
- 46:51I'm going to keep 1. So I had loads and loads and
- 46:56loads of his base rookie cards from back when they were $20
- 47:00each for APSA 10. I've told this story a million
- 47:03times. So over the years as he would
- 47:05hit, you know, his cards went astronomical numerous times over
- 47:08the last few years. Well, I definitely put up some
- 47:13more for sale last month at CIA or the month before I sold a
- 47:18bunch on eBay. I have two more base cards that
- 47:23I'm willing to sell. So I'll have 11 Otani base card
- 47:27and that is going to be the Bowman Rookie.
- 47:30Why? Because I bought like 60 of
- 47:32those for a dollar each back in the day.
- 47:34They were like a dollar to $1.50 each on the pit.
- 47:37You know the pit that I talked about that I used for 20 years
- 47:41on the pit buying cards sight and seeing why I bought tons of
- 47:44otanis on the pits, stacks of them, and I sent tons off that I
- 47:49thought were 10's and came back 10s.
- 47:50I sold those over the years like $250 each and now they're like
- 47:53$500 cards. I kept slowly sold them through
- 47:58the years. I took some of the national
- 47:59traded some back in the day, so I have those two to sell.
- 48:04As far as Judge goes, I don't think Judge has reached nearly
- 48:08his potential and card value that he should be at or could be
- 48:12at. I see his cards being worth as
- 48:16much as Otani's in the future. If if he continues to do what
- 48:20he's doing, you could say he's having a better season than he's
- 48:24definitely having a better season so far than Otani as far
- 48:27as hitting. So is Mike Trout, but Otani's
- 48:30pitching now is elite status, so it's really fun to see it switch
- 48:35over to the pitching. As far as Otani's cards go, I
- 48:39have what I have for his. I'm not buying any of his cards
- 48:44unless they're multiplayer. I have a couple multiplayer
- 48:48cards that I want to pick up of his.
- 48:52I'm not going to sell any more of his except for those two base
- 48:54cards and judge. I'm not selling any of my
- 48:56judges. They all fit my collecting
- 48:58criteria. I sold the ones I wanted to sell
- 49:02over the years. Like last year I sold some that
- 49:05I shouldn't have because they went out, but I'm fine with it.
- 49:08It was they had already doubled in value, right?
- 49:12The cards I have are staying in my collection and they're
- 49:14staying long term. They're not going to be shot off
- 49:18if even if they double from this point.
- 49:20I they, they go in my collection.
- 49:22But some my trout cards, I have a lot of my trout cards that I
- 49:27would like to sell off and they're ones that are just
- 49:31random buys. After I went on the gold when I
- 49:33first started collecting my trout, I bought his.
- 49:36I was going after his gold cards only his gold.
- 49:39Gold run from 2011 all the way through and I have them all
- 49:43basically. I have some All Star cards I
- 49:45want to replace with the regular base gold cards.
- 49:49But I also bought a bunch of I was buying like just random
- 49:53cards. I have a bunch still have a
- 49:55bunch of PSA 10. You know, random cards of his on
- 49:58my wall that I'd like to get rid of.
- 50:01But I also have I created a random.
- 50:04It's an Otani. The the front of it is actually
- 50:09I'll just grab it to share with you because it it it help.
- 50:12It helps me maintain my focus. Grab it.
- 50:18Greatest card room ever right there.
- 50:20Look at that. Greatest greatly.
- 50:22I won't lie. It's the greatest card room in
- 50:24the whole world. It, it truly is I, I, I can't
- 50:26imagine anyone's carving better than mine.
- 50:29Anyone comes, visits their mind will blow off their skull.
- 50:32But this album right here, it has Otani and Mike Trout on it
- 50:38and what it says is Mike Trout and Shohei Otani tops paper
- 50:43parallels. So, and the parallels I'm
- 50:46shooting for with Otani and Trout have just been Indies,
- 50:51gold, some random blacks. But any of the any of the random
- 50:56stuff that I bought over the years go in this album.
- 51:00And I don't know what I will definitely sell off some of
- 51:04these random parallels that I purchased.
- 51:06Top space parallels. I have a focus now and it's
- 51:10those golds. It's the Indies, some blacks and
- 51:14multiplayer into multiplayer cards.
- 51:16I'm very focused on. I have a very big multiplayer
- 51:20collection of Otani cards, him and multiple other players and
- 51:25they're in those parallels that I love.
- 51:27So to your point, you're the long answer is eventually sold
- 51:32off everything I want to sell for Judge and Otani cards.
- 51:37But Mike Trout, I have a basically AI have a lot of Trout
- 51:43cards that I could sell if his if he start, if he has a good
- 51:47season and he finishes off, I will probably next season or the
- 51:52season after sell off some of these others.
- 51:55And you know, I'm still buying my trout cards.
- 51:58Don't even know I've never stopped.
- 52:00So my collection of my trout cards is astonishing and it's
- 52:03very nice to see his cards come back.
- 52:06Here's what we need, though, Dylan.
- 52:07We need, we need. Well, I don't know if you I know
- 52:09you're you like the Angels, but yeah, we need a Mike Trout trade
- 52:14to the Yankees, right? And he's a teammate of Aaron
- 52:16Judge and the Yankees make the World Series and face off the
- 52:19Dodgers again. That would be good for the
- 52:21hobby, I think, and specifically for your if those MM Trout cars
- 52:25that you do want to sell, if that's something like that
- 52:28happened. Wow.
- 52:29That would really, I think, do well for his his prices.
- 52:32You may you bring that up and I love that because the only, the
- 52:36absolute only team I would want, or I don't even know if I'd want
- 52:40it, but the only team I would be OK with my Trout being traded
- 52:44to, it would be the Yankees. I don't want, I don't want my
- 52:48Trout to be traded to a team, even if they're in the World
- 52:51Series. I don't.
- 52:52I would rather him stay on the Angels because to me, Angels
- 52:56have been my that's my, that's my team.
- 52:58I walked that field as a kid. You know, I, I spent my life at
- 53:03the Angel Stadium. That's the only team that I've
- 53:06ever cared about. And the Yankees is that other
- 53:09team that I cared about. In my collection, I've set the
- 53:13first card I made when I came on YouTube, it talks about me on
- 53:17the back. And I wrote about how if you
- 53:19looked at my collection, you would think I was a I'm an
- 53:22Angels fan and you would think I was a Dodgers and Yankees fan
- 53:26because of my collection. But the Yankees in particular
- 53:30has been a huge part of my collecting because I have on my
- 53:34right up there to talk about your childhood room.
- 53:37To bring that back. I have a picture right there I'm
- 53:42looking at that was hung up on my childhood wall.
- 53:45Black and white photo of Babe Ruth, Jamie Foxx and Lou Gehrig
- 53:50staring at me right now. And I had a whole bunch of these
- 53:52on my wall because my mom bought them for me.
- 53:55And I have Ted Williams and mainly Yankees players.
- 53:59So if my child got traded and he went to the went and played side
- 54:03by side with Aaron Judge and he went against Otani, that would
- 54:07be the pinnacle of that would be the greatest thing ever.
- 54:12And I could see that happening. I really could too.
- 54:15It could happen if I'm not mistaken.
- 54:17I'm pretty sure Mike Trout, if I'm not mistaken, that's like
- 54:21one of his favorite teams as well.
- 54:23Well, he hits great at Yankee Stadium, as we've seen.
- 54:26I mean, it just makes, I mean, I know him.
- 54:28I live in. Massachusetts.
- 54:29Why? Yeah, he hits, he crushes, he
- 54:31crushes and crushes. He yeah, Phillies is where he's
- 54:34from. But man.
- 54:35He's Mickey Mantle, 2 point O man, you know.
- 54:37Yankee. Totally.
- 54:38Speaking of the last point, we're almost at the hour mark,
- 54:40couple more minutes, but this is the last thing I was thinking
- 54:44of. These are the times really where
- 54:46when prices are going up so much on on cards.
- 54:50These are the times really when within your collection, it kind
- 54:53of defines what what your long term cards are, because there's
- 54:57a lot of cards and a lot of people's collections that have
- 54:59gone up significantly here just in the last six months.
- 55:03And you know, if you if you were ever going to sell them, now
- 55:07might be a good time. So it's really it's forcing a
- 55:09lot of collectors to really dig deep in their collection and and
- 55:13look at all their cards and go. You know, I said I wanted to
- 55:17hold this long term. Well, now I have to put put my
- 55:19money more in mouth is right because prices have gone up so
- 55:23fast on so many cards and especially good looking cards
- 55:26with vintage like example. I have brought this one earlier
- 55:30Mickey Mantle rookie card, right PSAPS A5 win.
- 55:36Now we hear a lot about the Mike Baker stickers.
- 55:38These are the old school stickers.
- 55:40This is an PWCCA sticker. I good.
- 55:45Lord. On this I I could make a lot of
- 55:49money on this card really from when I bought it.
- 55:51I think especially right now with the I appeal movement and
- 55:54this is a nice I appeal Mickey. That looks better than an A.
- 55:57I've seen that card up close. That looks better.
- 55:59Than an it's a good one so I mean I could probably I I don't
- 56:01know, but I could sell it for maybe double of what I paid for
- 56:04it same with my 52 tops Mickey Mantle.
- 56:06I could definitely make a lot of money on that.
- 56:09But you know, I said when I got them that I, I'm looking to hold
- 56:12those long term. Well, now, you know, if I was
- 56:15looking to make money, now's the time I could take the money off
- 56:18the table. But I'm not doing that.
- 56:19So I think it's a time when if you are a collector doesn't mean
- 56:23you can't sell cards. I'm, I'm selling cards.
- 56:25But if you are a collector of, of things, of cards that you do
- 56:29plan on holding, now is probably as hard a time as ever to keep
- 56:34holding those, right, Unless, you know, you truly love them.
- 56:37And and, you know, I think we, you and I were going to do a
- 56:40show at one point where we're going to look at the how do we
- 56:45put it though? The most most important card or
- 56:48the most valuable cards or something like that, right.
- 56:51Well, yeah, I. Have more value.
- 56:53Transcend value, right? Well, in a way, any card that
- 56:57you're not selling right now transcends the value, right?
- 56:59Because you know, you, you value it more than what it could sell
- 57:04for right now or it just means more to you than the money you
- 57:06could make on it. So there's the cards that we're
- 57:10keeping our collection. Those, those are.
- 57:12That's kind of the definition of that, really.
- 57:15Yeah, no, you made I love this. I love this topic.
- 57:17So let's touch on it for a few minutes.
- 57:20One of the worst arguments I that I hear all the time, and I
- 57:23absolutely hate this argument is you holding a card that is worth
- 57:29$500 is you basically saying I would rather have that than
- 57:34$500. I, I just, I don't, I can't, I
- 57:38don't, I don't like that statement.
- 57:39I don't, I get it could be true and I guess in a way it's true.
- 57:43I just don't see it that way. Maybe because I don't have when
- 57:47I have my card ladder account, I don't watch my collection go up
- 57:52and down the value because I turned all those.
- 57:54I had to go individually to every single card and turn that
- 57:57feature off. So I don't even know what those
- 58:00cards are worth. And that's the number one reason
- 58:02is because it isn't I, I always, I do see out of both sides of my
- 58:07mouth where cards that are worth more become more valuable in my
- 58:11own brain. And I get that part of it.
- 58:14But I don't see $1000 card as $1000 cash it it, it's totally
- 58:19different to me. And I also everybody like will
- 58:23share a card these days and they'll be like, this card's
- 58:26doubled in value. So I have to sell it.
- 58:29Almost every card has doubled in value.
- 58:32If you collected, if you, if you collected in a decent way and
- 58:37you're not just buying, even the base cards of Ohtani have
- 58:42doubled and tripled in value. But if you're not just buying, I
- 58:46don't want to say dumbly, but if you've been in the hobby a
- 58:48decent amount of time and you bought with your eyeballs and
- 58:50you bought with your brain, your cards have doubled in value and
- 58:53you especially if you picked, how about this?
- 58:56If you picked players, let's not even based on anything else.
- 58:59If you pick the right players to collect, and that's not talking
- 59:02about modern players. I'm talking about vintage
- 59:03players. If you pick the right vintage
- 59:05players to collect, they've all doubled in value.
- 59:08So when you sell a card that's doubled and you sell that Mickey
- 59:10Mantle and you get double your value out of it, you're going to
- 59:14go buy. Mangini made this argument.
- 59:16You know you're going to go buy a card that's doubled in value.
- 59:19Only way you're going to not is if you go buy a card that of
- 59:23let's say, you know, Ernie Banks who hasn't doubled in value and
- 59:28even his rookie cards, you know, maybe not double in value, but
- 59:32you get what I'm saying. Like it's, it's one of those
- 59:35things you, you, your cards have doubled in value.
- 59:38I have to sell. I'm forced to sell it.
- 59:40No, I think the only time if you could be make the argument to be
- 59:43forced to sell is if your card went from $100 to $1000 or $1000
- 59:49to $10,000. Every card's doubled in value.
- 59:52I look at my collection, it's worth double what it was before.
- 59:57Some of them triple, some 10 times.
- 1:00:00But I just don't see it in that way.
- 1:00:02The only way I sell a card in all reality is if it has gone
- 1:00:07from 100 to thousands or I doesn't.
- 1:00:12It doesn't fit my collection. So yeah, I now we could go on
- 1:00:16for hours about this. So yeah, there's my two cents on
- 1:00:19that whole concept. We could go on for hours and
- 1:00:22well, that means we're going to do another one of these, Yes,
- 1:00:25and hopefully not too long from now.
- 1:00:27But yeah, we're at the hour mark.
- 1:00:29I got a kids are getting out of school pretty.
- 1:00:31Soon my wife just texted me and said let's go surf and I go.
- 1:00:34All right, well, hey, go surfing, man.
- 1:00:36This was fun as always. Another episode of Turn Back the
- 1:00:39Clock. Dylan, thanks.
- 1:00:40And I'll talk to you soon. OK, later.
- 1:00:43All right.
