- Adam Rutz: Are you committed to what you say you want, or are you just interested in it? Because those are two completely different things. As human beings, it's easy to say, I want to lose 20 pounds, I want to build a great business, I want to become a better athlete, or I want to become a better husband or wife or parent, coach, leader. But being interested in something is easy. Commitment gets tested when things become difficult. Look at every January. The gyms are packed. Everybody has a New Year's resolution. Everybody's excited about getting in shape or losing weight, becoming a different version of themselves. Then February starts rolling around. People realize the routine is harder than they thought it was going to be. Getting up early isn't always fun. The workouts hurt. The results aren't coming as quickly as they expected them to. Life gets busy and people start going less and less and less. They miss one workout, then another, then eventually they completely abandon the goal they were so excited about a few weeks earlier. And sure enough, by the middle of February, a lot of people are right back to doing the same things that they were before January even started. Why? Because a lot of people love the idea of the result. But They're afraid of the difficulty required to get there. If you're truly committed to something, you have to understand up front. It is going to get difficult. You're not always going to feel motivated. It's not always going to be convenient. And there are going to be days where quitting sounds a whole lot easier than continuing. That's why commitment isn't a decision that you make just once. You have to recommit every single day. For me, I have to recommit every day to being a great husband. I have to recommit to being the business owner and leader I want to be. I have to recommit to being the best coach I can be for the people who trust me. An athlete has to recommit to their preparation. A parent has to recommit to the kind of parent they want to become. Whatever your goal is, you have to decide. Am I interested in this or am I committed to this? Because interest says, I'll do it when it feels good. Commitment says, this is what I decided to do, and I'm going to keep showing up when things get hard. So here's what I want you to think about today. What is something you say you're committed to? And when it gets difficult, do your actions still prove it? Because anybody can be committed when it's easy. Your real commitment gets revealed when difficulty. Gives you a reason to quit and you decide to keep going anyway. Mindset, process, discipline, execution, that's mental performance daily.
