Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, you know last time you heard me
- 0:02Speaker 1: on one leg up on Sports, we were congratulating mister
- 0:06Speaker 1: not only Alex Ovechkin, but Kenny Albert, a man that
- 0:09Speaker 1: lou Terminello and I got to interview about a year
- 0:12Speaker 1: and a few months ago and congratulate him on the
- 0:16Speaker 1: call that was eight ninety five, and I was honored
- 0:19Speaker 1: to play a clip that Lou asked him, you know
- 0:22Speaker 1: what's next for Kenny Albert? Well, Lou Terminola. When we
- 0:25Speaker 1: did that interview on Terminalo's take, we didn't think OVI
- 0:29Speaker 1: eight ninety five would be next on the agenda, did we.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I mean literally a year and a few months later.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Hey, Alex is good to be with you. Thank you no,
- 0:39Speaker 2: especially the way Ovechkin started twenty three twenty four season.
- 0:44Speaker 2: He had a very slow first have picked it up
- 0:46Speaker 2: in the second half which put him in range to
- 0:48Speaker 2: get to to eight ninety four, then eight ninety five.
- 0:52Speaker 2: And we asked Kenny what was on his bucket list?
- 0:55Speaker 2: And he has called a lot of great events Olympics,
- 0:59Speaker 2: NFL games, NFL playoff games, MLB games, Stanley Cup finals, basketball,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and this is another one that he can add to
- 1:08Speaker 2: his list, A great call all all the calls I
- 1:13Speaker 2: heard the Washington TV and radio broadcasters. Great call. Ken,
- 1:17Speaker 2: Chris King, the Islander broadcaster, broadcasted it for history, not
- 1:22Speaker 2: like a visiting players scoring a goal in a game
- 1:25Speaker 2: with the Islanders one four to one. Played very well.
- 1:28Speaker 2: But again, Kenny, I could add that goal to his
- 1:30Speaker 2: bucket list. We'll always hear it that. That's an iconic call.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And the belly flop. You can't forget the belly flop.
- 1:36Speaker 1: That was just a great moment after he scored, wasn't.
- 1:38Speaker 2: It It was? And again, if I had tried to
- 1:41Speaker 2: belly flop like that, you'll be visiting me in New
- 1:45Speaker 2: York Presbyterian.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And you know, remember the time about how Wayne Gretzky
- 1:48Speaker 1: handled it was great? Well, he was raised that way.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I don't you know the story, but he talked about
- 1:52Speaker 1: how his dad when pointed out how gracious Gordy how
- 1:56Speaker 1: was when Gretzky broke the record, and Gretzky's basically encourage
- 2:01Speaker 1: him to be as gracious, and he's been that and
- 2:03Speaker 1: more with ov even joking around a little bit to
- 2:05Speaker 1: get nine hundred goals, Hey, he might actually go to
- 2:08Speaker 1: ubs and score nine hundred, Okay, This could be even
- 2:10Speaker 1: more history on the horizon, right.
- 2:12Speaker 2: They play, they play back there next week, Alex. If
- 2:16Speaker 2: he stays healthy and he's still in good shape, it's
- 2:19Speaker 2: not like he's hanging on. He's you know, he's third
- 2:22Speaker 2: in the league with third or fourth in the league
- 2:24Speaker 2: with goals in goals scoring, with forty two, he might
- 2:26Speaker 2: hit a thousand. Say say gets another four or five goals,
- 2:32Speaker 2: is at nine hundred. He can't hit forty five next year,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and he can hit forty five the year after, and
- 2:39Speaker 2: now it all can get total. Oh yeah, that would
- 2:42Speaker 2: be that would be untouchable. So yeah, that was that
- 2:46Speaker 2: was That was a great moment. And Wayne Gretzky was
- 2:50Speaker 2: total class personified. I thought I thought it would. I
- 2:54Speaker 2: thought that the nice stuff went a little too long.
- 2:57Speaker 2: There was still a game to be played. But the
- 2:59Speaker 2: NHL handled it great. They really did.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And you know, if you're in DC or want to
- 3:04Speaker 1: take a trip down there, you might actually get to
- 3:06Speaker 1: meet ov from three to five pm outside historic Union
- 3:10Speaker 1: Station right across from the capitol, actually a few blocks
- 3:12Speaker 1: away from the capitol. So maybe lu Andi, you should
- 3:15Speaker 1: jump on an Amtrak and try and meet him.
- 3:17Speaker 2: What do you think, Hey, sounds good to me, my friend.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And Union Station's a nice place. It really is. It's
- 3:23Speaker 2: a nice station.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And actually, when we were in DC about a month ago,
- 3:27Speaker 1: the Caps were playing at least a couple of nights,
- 3:29Speaker 1: but commitments could not lead us there. I was just
- 3:32Speaker 1: doing advocacy work and said, but maybe one day we'll
- 3:34Speaker 1: get back to Capital one and see the Grade eight
- 3:37Speaker 1: as they're calling them. All right, well, you know the
- 3:43Speaker 1: next thing about this is so the next night, obviously,
- 3:45Speaker 1: Florida and Houston, and I was kind of riding the
- 3:48Speaker 1: wave of actually interviewing a student from University Houston, Cameron Olbrigo,
- 3:53Speaker 1: the sports editor for the Daily Cougar. And how cool
- 3:57Speaker 1: was that interview? By the way, to get someone from
- 3:59Speaker 1: Houston on the day in the Final four. He can't
- 4:01Speaker 1: beat that, lily.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Considering that he probably was pretty busy, even a new
- 4:06Speaker 2: game on the day of the champion game. That was
- 4:08Speaker 2: a good tool for you. That was great. It was
- 4:10Speaker 2: a great game. Houston was in control and unfortunately some
- 4:18Speaker 2: of the mistakes at the end cost him it. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: this Final four, if you replayed it, you might have
- 4:28Speaker 2: three you might have four different results, three different results
- 4:33Speaker 2: from the from the games. But let's go back quickly
- 4:36Speaker 2: through Saturday night Houston against Duke. Duke had that game.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Duke had that game in their back pocket. One thing
- 4:46Speaker 2: that you saw again the veteran team Houston averaging about
- 4:52Speaker 2: twenty three years old, Duke averaging around eighteen nineteen years old.
- 4:57Speaker 2: You saw down the stretch a little you know, a little,
- 4:59Speaker 2: a little bit nerves. Duke couldn't get the ball and
- 5:02Speaker 2: bounds on one play turned it over. But one play
- 5:05Speaker 2: that happened that was not mentioned. Why on that last
- 5:09Speaker 2: play which resulted in a Cooper flag foul, why did
- 5:14Speaker 2: Duke coach John Shire up sixty seven to sixty six,
- 5:19Speaker 2: have the Duke players on the foul lane because even
- 5:24Speaker 2: though it was barely a foul, if it was a foul,
- 5:27Speaker 2: why give the officials an opportunity to make a mistake.
- 5:32Speaker 2: They should have been off the line because Tyres Proctor
- 5:35Speaker 2: was shooting the one in one and did not have
- 5:37Speaker 2: a good game, and he was a junior, he wasn't
- 5:38Speaker 2: a freshman, did not have a good game, missed it.
- 5:41Speaker 2: The chances of you getting offensive rebound are small, and
- 5:49Speaker 2: that was one big play at cost I think cost
- 5:54Speaker 2: Duke the game. Really did Shire. It was only is
- 5:59Speaker 2: only his third year. Maybe he got a little tight
- 6:02Speaker 2: down the stretch. That was the thing. Did Houston win
- 6:06Speaker 2: that game? Oules or did Duke lose it? But then
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know Houston advanced to the title game on on
- 6:15Speaker 2: Monday night and they were in control. They were controlled
- 6:18Speaker 2: forty two to thirty. They were in control of the game.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Then I have to give young coach Todd golden credit
- 6:27Speaker 2: for pushing the pace. He he he up tempoed the
- 6:32Speaker 2: the game. Houston, I think is in tempo three sixteen
- 6:35Speaker 2: out of three one hundred and sixty four Division One teams,
- 6:39Speaker 2: so we up to tempo. And then also the officials
- 6:43Speaker 2: called the game differently in the second half than they
- 6:46Speaker 2: did in the first half, only four thousand and first
- 6:49Speaker 2: half twenty three in the second half. Bill Raftery made
- 6:53Speaker 2: a very good point three minutes into the game said,
- 6:56Speaker 2: if Florida wants to win this game, they got to
- 6:59Speaker 2: get down and dirty and as scrappy as Houston is.
- 7:04Speaker 2: And they did. And again they didn't get much from
- 7:11Speaker 2: Walter Clayton Junior, but he did hit big baskets in
- 7:13Speaker 2: the end, and he did make the big defensive play
- 7:16Speaker 2: that turn that resulted in turnover, the almost turnover at
- 7:19Speaker 2: the end of the game which the loose ball was
- 7:22Speaker 2: picked up by Florida in the game was over and
- 7:24Speaker 2: that was it. But on that last play down Florida
- 7:32Speaker 2: Houston should have driven to the basket the way that
- 7:34Speaker 2: a physical calling fouls, they probably would have gotten the whistle.
- 7:38Speaker 2: They should not have looked for the three. That's that's
- 7:40Speaker 2: just that's just me.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And then you know, there was one play where they
- 7:44Speaker 1: stripped them. Houston was stripped to the ball, and I
- 7:47Speaker 1: thought that was going to be the game changer because
- 7:49Speaker 1: it just was part of that momentum that Florida was riding.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And I mean one a way to get stuck on
- 7:55Speaker 1: seven ninety nine though, I mean really I thought he
- 7:57Speaker 1: was going to get eight hundred on Monday night?
- 8:00Speaker 2: Did coach Kelvin alex I mean, yeah, they looked, I mean,
- 8:05Speaker 2: at forty two to thirty, they looked, I don't want
- 8:07Speaker 2: to say invincible, they looked almost invincible. That would have
- 8:10Speaker 2: been Kelvin Sampsons eight hundred wins as a college head
- 8:14Speaker 2: coach and his three hundred to win at the University
- 8:17Speaker 2: of Houston and now University of Houston has gone to
- 8:19Speaker 2: the Final four seven times with some very very historic teams,
- 8:24Speaker 2: and they're still looking for their first national title. And
- 8:30Speaker 2: they've been there before, Oh and Alex with great teams
- 8:36Speaker 2: now with like Cinderella teams Elvin Hayes, Don Cheney in
- 8:42Speaker 2: the late sixties and sixty eight, in eighty two, eighty three,
- 8:46Speaker 2: eighty four with Elijah on and you know those guys.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And this was an excellent, excellent team. Well hey, they
- 8:53Speaker 2: were nineteen and one in the Big twelve. Excellent team
- 8:56Speaker 2: and this one hurts if you're the University of Houston
- 8:59Speaker 2: or if you're fan of the Cougars.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Can you break it down real quick what happened with
- 9:03Speaker 1: that last play? Because I think everybody's still be fuddled
- 9:05Speaker 1: by it. So he can't make the three, he don't
- 9:07Speaker 1: he dribbles, it can't touch it. I mean, it was
- 9:09Speaker 1: just a very confusing way to end the game.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Well, once, uh, once Clayton came out, Adam he gave
- 9:17Speaker 2: up his dribble and he didn't take the shot because
- 9:21Speaker 2: Clayton was gonna block it, so he could not be
- 9:24Speaker 2: he could not be in the first player to pick
- 9:26Speaker 2: up the ball or so it would have been a turnover,
- 9:29Speaker 2: uh and the Florida player uh knocked it away. They
- 9:33Speaker 2: rolled on, you know, he rolled towards midcourt and by
- 9:35Speaker 2: the time possession was regained by Florida, the clock ran out.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Tough way to lose a game, So we'll.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Have to see Cooper flag still though in number one.
- 9:48Speaker 1: By the way, get she's he's earned another fan. My
- 9:51Speaker 1: fiance Gabby loves the kid, loved all the shots he
- 9:53Speaker 1: was making, so he earned another fan that night on
- 9:56Speaker 1: on Saturday, by the way.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Well, he played a strong game on Saturday, not as
- 10:05Speaker 2: strong as he did in previous games, but he's played
- 10:07Speaker 2: a strong game. He's a great player, he's a spectacular player,
- 10:11Speaker 2: and he got off a good shot on that last play,
- 10:13Speaker 2: just you know, just missed it. And that really wasn't
- 10:17Speaker 2: a foul on the kid anyway, So what did you do?
- 10:23Speaker 1: Before we got to watch that exhilarating last few minutes
- 10:26Speaker 1: of the final, we were at the garden for Mister
- 10:30Speaker 1: Ranger Knight honoring Rod Jobert, and boy, he was a
- 10:33Speaker 1: family friend to my dad, the Viscardi Center and so
- 10:36Speaker 1: many kids in the disabled community through that sports night,
- 10:40Speaker 1: and I do miss him to this day. And I know,
- 10:42Speaker 1: but Bove he wants the Rangers to make changes. I'm sure,
- 10:45Speaker 1: but you know that was the only highlight of the night.
- 10:48Speaker 1: The honoring of johnan Quick as mister Ranger was the
- 10:51Speaker 1: only highlight that night.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Louis, it was and real quick. I had the opportunity.
- 10:56Speaker 2: We did the remote as you may recall, at Modell's
- 11:00Speaker 2: the Morning show with the Episcopal Show, and Rod was,
- 11:02Speaker 2: uh was there and he is such a good guy
- 11:06Speaker 2: and just a regular guy, and uh yeah, we God
- 11:10Speaker 2: rest his soul. He was. He was a great Rangers,
- 11:13Speaker 2: all time leading goal score at four o six, member
- 11:16Speaker 2: of one of the most famous lines in hockey with
- 11:18Speaker 2: John Retelling to Cadfield. Yeah, a great Ranger. But he
- 11:25Speaker 2: would not have been happy if he was alive and
- 11:27Speaker 2: saw what happened on Saturday and then follow up on Monday.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I mean they would totally dominate on Saturday with their
- 11:33Speaker 2: life on the line at Prudential Center, and then on
- 11:37Speaker 2: Monday night, really they show a little more life. But
- 11:43Speaker 2: they were down three to nothing at the end of
- 11:44Speaker 2: the first period. You knew that weren't going to win.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Tampa Bay. Watch out for Tampa Bay that Uh, they
- 11:51Speaker 2: they're still They're still a contender without question. And uh, now,
- 11:57Speaker 2: as the Rangers are two points away from elimination, obviously
- 12:01Speaker 2: they're not going to make it unless they have the
- 12:02Speaker 2: greatest comeback in the history of the league. Next week
- 12:06Speaker 2: is going to me, He's going to be a pretty
- 12:08Speaker 2: big week. Are they going to keep the coach? Peter
- 12:11Speaker 2: la Vallett? Is Chris Drewy still going to be the
- 12:15Speaker 2: general manager?
- 12:16Speaker 1: And by the way, Laviolette admitted he doesn't go to
- 12:19Speaker 1: locker room after a loss. I don't understand why he
- 12:21Speaker 1: said that publicly.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Well, yeah, so again, everybody has their own little things
- 12:30Speaker 2: what they do before after games. But the Rangers have
- 12:35Speaker 2: a lot of questions. Marks Is this the end of
- 12:38Speaker 2: Chris Cryer's regime with the Rangers? Yeah? I think it is.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I think his days are done, he said. I mean
- 12:46Speaker 2: he's got twenty calls, he's got five assists, he's got
- 12:48Speaker 2: five assists. I mean he's fifty points lower than last year.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I mean, how could that be? Savanahjad Last year he
- 12:58Speaker 2: got offt a bad star and he picked it up.
- 13:00Speaker 2: This year he's been inconsistent. Could could they find a
- 13:04Speaker 2: taker for him? Adam Fox? Adam Fox again? This is
- 13:10Speaker 2: just me excellent player, Do not get me wrong. I
- 13:13Speaker 2: don't think even though he won a normous trophy, I
- 13:15Speaker 2: don't think he's a normous trophy type of player. I
- 13:20Speaker 2: think he's a bit overrating. So you know, we'll see
- 13:24Speaker 2: what they're not going to trade him. I'm not saying
- 13:26Speaker 2: to trade him to cut him loose, but what they're
- 13:30Speaker 2: gonna do with the human turnover KeAndre Miller. I mean,
- 13:34Speaker 2: you don't even have to force check him hard and
- 13:35Speaker 2: he'll give you the puck he's I mean, he's not
- 13:38Speaker 2: progressed like they thought, so we'll see a lot if they.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Build around Johnny Brodzinski. I mean that kid, that guy
- 13:45Speaker 1: can play for a few more years. And he's been
- 13:47Speaker 1: an accid to the Rangers, probably their most valuable ranger
- 13:50Speaker 1: this year, and.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Well, the most viable ranger is still either Stirkin or
- 13:56Speaker 2: I mean they both played. Even though I know perin
- 14:00Speaker 2: production dropped a little bit, he was still terrific for them.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And you know, I signed Alexey Lafreniere to the big
- 14:08Speaker 2: contract in his first year. He signs a contract he's
- 14:13Speaker 2: not good. So I don't know. I have no idea
- 14:16Speaker 2: what they're gonna do. Going from one hundred and fourteen
- 14:18Speaker 2: points to seventy nine right now with a week to go.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Alex from Stanley Cup contender to out of the playoffs
- 14:29Speaker 2: and badly out of the playoffs. I mean, they just
- 14:31Speaker 2: didn't play well. It's something I would have not figured
- 14:34Speaker 2: when we started NHL seeds.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And the trades they made and just like not worked out. Meanwhile,
- 14:41Speaker 1: you look at Coco, he's kind of thriving. Heto's been
- 14:44Speaker 1: a little banged up where he's at, and Trouba has
- 14:47Speaker 1: been actually a little under the radar. I haven't heard
- 14:49Speaker 1: much about him since he got traded. But they all
- 14:51Speaker 1: seem to be doing a little better than on the Rangers,
- 14:54Speaker 1: am I right?
- 14:55Speaker 2: Well, actually, I think the Mighty Ducks are right there
- 14:59Speaker 2: with the Rangers as far as a point total, and
- 15:02Speaker 2: they're a team on the colm look out for the
- 15:04Speaker 2: Mighty Ducks. We don't know. They're all a bunch of
- 15:06Speaker 2: young guys, and Jacob Trueber, being a veteran guy, is
- 15:09Speaker 2: not gonna hurt that, you know. He'll he'll make them
- 15:14Speaker 2: toe the line as they get as they get better.
- 15:18Speaker 2: But it's just been a it's been one of the
- 15:19Speaker 2: worst years in range of history.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Really, And you know what, I also feel like there's
- 15:24Speaker 1: not a spring that has gone by and almost all
- 15:27Speaker 1: my lifetime that there isn't a Ranger hockey game in
- 15:29Speaker 1: the middle of May. I mean, it just always seems
- 15:31Speaker 1: to be a tradition. So it's gonna be weird.
- 15:34Speaker 2: One Cup since nineteen forty Alex not good enough.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Oh and they keep from the revolving door of coaches.
- 15:41Speaker 1: And I think about what you say about football. You
- 15:43Speaker 1: don't want to have too many coaches coach a football
- 15:46Speaker 1: team in as many years. Well, the Rangers are gonna
- 15:48Speaker 1: have another coach, most likely in a span of four
- 15:51Speaker 1: or five years. That's not good either, Louis.
- 15:54Speaker 2: It's not good. Divin't had as many coaches as the
- 15:56Speaker 2: Giants have had since since Coughlin is retired or been
- 16:01Speaker 2: was for a style. No, you are correct, you gotta
- 16:05Speaker 2: have some stability. But this is this is a problem
- 16:08Speaker 2: with a franchise. I did not see coming. I did
- 16:11Speaker 2: not see the Rangers falling apart like they did.
- 16:15Speaker 1: No way we see a Tortorella reunion.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Though, right, No, no way, no way, no way, there
- 16:21Speaker 2: is no way that is happening.
- 16:22Speaker 1: I love them Brooksy towards back and forth. I missed those.
- 16:26Speaker 2: They were classic. They were classic, no question about it.
- 16:30Speaker 2: And uh, the Rangers are two points away from elimination.
- 16:34Speaker 2: The Islanders are two points away from elimination. Let's face
- 16:39Speaker 2: if they were a bubble team coming into the season.
- 16:41Speaker 2: They've had major injuries to Matthew Barzel, Simeon Varlamov, their
- 16:46Speaker 2: backup goalie got hurt on a Black Friday, and uh, though,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and Anthony Deuclaire, who obviously now they sent home, miss
- 16:56Speaker 2: twenty nine games. Uh, but the volom Off injury and
- 17:01Speaker 2: the bars Ell injury killed them because Sorocans had to
- 17:03Speaker 2: play more games. And Marcus Marcus Hogeberg is not an
- 17:08Speaker 2: NHL backup goalie. So what's gonna happen with them? I
- 17:11Speaker 2: don't know. I do not know what's gonna happen.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I really, I know we're talking about Ovechkin, but speaking
- 17:18Speaker 1: of Sorokan also a guy that handled it with a
- 17:20Speaker 1: lot of class and actually gave him the stick that
- 17:23Speaker 1: he gave up the goal with. I thought that was
- 17:24Speaker 1: a pretty great move right there.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Well, again, if if Russia is allowed to play in
- 17:29Speaker 2: the Olympics next year, Ovechkin and Sorokian could be teammates
- 17:33Speaker 2: on the Russian Olympic team. But yes, that that was
- 17:38Speaker 2: a class move. Sorokan was is that best player Bohorwarth
- 17:42Speaker 2: had had a good year. Uh, they got to you know,
- 17:47Speaker 2: restricted phrasing is no is no adopts spectacularly last year.
- 17:53Speaker 2: But Alex their roster is not good enough. And when
- 17:57Speaker 2: you have the thirty first rank paddell play in the
- 17:59Speaker 2: league and you're the kill is nothing special. You're gonna lose.
- 18:03Speaker 2: You're not gonna win.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Absolutely, it's gonna be Uh, it's gonna be a tough
- 18:10Speaker 1: kind of spring if our teams don't make it in.
- 18:13Speaker 1: So there's that.
- 18:14Speaker 2: But one thing, what there is one team that's gonna
- 18:17Speaker 2: be in the playoffs. They just need i think at
- 18:20Speaker 2: one point to get in. The Devils. We played a
- 18:21Speaker 2: great game on Saturday. But the Devil's problem is what
- 18:24Speaker 2: we saw last night. They played a Brewing team that
- 18:27Speaker 2: had just was ten or oh they won that last
- 18:29Speaker 2: game the Bruins to snap that streak. With a chance
- 18:32Speaker 2: to put the playoffs away, the Devils came up with
- 18:36Speaker 2: a horrendous effort. Uh. Jacob marsh and the goaltender was terrible.
- 18:43Speaker 2: They lose seven to two, coming off to that great
- 18:47Speaker 2: suffocation of the Rangers, bad bad sign. I don't know,
- 18:52Speaker 2: as I said, how far they're gonna go in playoffs
- 18:56Speaker 2: without Jack Hughes, without dou Wie Hamilton, without Siegan Thaler.
- 19:01Speaker 2: It's gonna be tough. I don't know if this team
- 19:03Speaker 2: has the mental maturity that for Stanley Cup run. So
- 19:08Speaker 2: we'll see.
- 19:09Speaker 1: We'll have to see, all right. I want to stick
- 19:11Speaker 1: in Madson Square Garden because obviously the other team and
- 19:14Speaker 1: it had a very brutal overtime loss to the Celtics
- 19:17Speaker 1: last night.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Celtics.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You know, they've made some records this year. No one's
- 19:20Speaker 1: really talking about. I think the most threes, if I'm
- 19:23Speaker 1: not mistaken, so some historic moments. I have some Boston
- 19:26Speaker 1: fans that are posting all about it, so that's how
- 19:28Speaker 1: I know. But but the Knicks going to the playoffs
- 19:31Speaker 1: and what.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Are we looking at.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Let's see, they are gonna be the three and they'll
- 19:35Speaker 2: probably play the sixth. That could be Detroit, could be Milwaukee.
- 19:39Speaker 2: We won't know until, you know, until a Sunday Sunday night.
- 19:43Speaker 1: So it's amazing that those little bad stretches the Knicks
- 19:46Speaker 1: did have have not really affected them as far as
- 19:49Speaker 1: getting a low seating, then.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Right, they have not. It has not affected this seat.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You are you're you are correct.
- 19:55Speaker 3: And there are some tough stretches this year, yeah, no,
- 19:58Speaker 3: there are in the rank and and the Knicks are
- 20:01Speaker 3: what all in ten against the Celtics, the Cavaliers, the
- 20:04Speaker 3: Oklahoma City Thunder.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I think the Knicks will win their first round. Still,
- 20:10Speaker 2: I think they will, but let's see who they play first.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I can't see the Knicks. I know, regular season and
- 20:17Speaker 2: playoffs don't mean anything. I remember. I remember back in
- 20:20Speaker 2: the ninety three to ninety four season when I was
- 20:23Speaker 2: with the Nets, we beat the Knicks four out of five.
- 20:26Speaker 2: We play him in the playoffs, so we lost three
- 20:27Speaker 2: games to one, so it's a different animal. I just
- 20:30Speaker 2: can't see. Even if the Knickts win the first round,
- 20:32Speaker 2: which I think they will, I can't see them beating
- 20:36Speaker 2: the Celtics four out of seven. I can't unless unless
- 20:40Speaker 2: Tatum has an injury, or Porzingis, who was great last night,
- 20:45Speaker 2: has an injury, or Jaylen Brown I know he has
- 20:48Speaker 2: some knee issues. If that becomes an issue, I can't
- 20:52Speaker 2: see the next getting by the second round, but that
- 20:56Speaker 2: you know, as we get closer to next week, we
- 20:59Speaker 2: will we value with the situation.
- 21:02Speaker 1: We will. But I still say Town's best acquisition for
- 21:05Speaker 1: Leon Rose in a little while. I think he's added
- 21:09Speaker 1: to this team and you know, Josh Jalen still doing
- 21:12Speaker 1: their thing, although Jalen's hurt, that's true, So a lot
- 21:15Speaker 1: to think about it. And is Jailing going to be
- 21:16Speaker 1: ready for the playoffs?
- 21:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like he will be, right he.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Played twenty two minutes for the Celtic's last night. I'm
- 21:23Speaker 2: sure they're resting him and I'm sure and you know,
- 21:26Speaker 2: I remember the one thing about the playoffs, you don't
- 21:28Speaker 2: play back to back. And the thing is Brunson comes
- 21:36Speaker 2: back from five weeks off and looks as great as
- 21:40Speaker 2: any superstar might be. And make no mistake about it,
- 21:44Speaker 2: he is a superstar, and offensively it's really tough to handle. Defensively,
- 21:53Speaker 2: he has his shortcomings, but so does Towns. But again,
- 21:57Speaker 2: let's see what happens. We'll reevaluate when it's seating come out.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I just think it's gonna be very difficult for the
- 22:02Speaker 2: next to beat to win four out of seven against Boston.
- 22:05Speaker 2: I really do.
- 22:06Speaker 1: And I'm not getting paid to say this, but the
- 22:08Speaker 1: Roommates they have a show called The Roommates Show. They're
- 22:10Speaker 1: gonna be at Peer seventeen, right across from my studio.
- 22:12Speaker 1: So maybe I'll go try and meet him on Tuesday night.
- 22:14Speaker 2: How cool would that be?
- 22:16Speaker 1: Him and Jalen josh Hart are going to be at
- 22:18Speaker 1: the South Street Seaport.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Yeah. That podcast they have has been pretty successful, oh man, and.
- 22:26Speaker 1: It drew a crowd at Central Park in September, so
- 22:29Speaker 1: I'm sure they're gonna have the same kind of track
- 22:31Speaker 1: record this time around as well. All right, and they
- 22:34Speaker 1: actually have Anthony Volpi, which is my next transition to baseball,
- 22:38Speaker 1: because three straight homers off Nesser, everybody thought the Yanks
- 22:42Speaker 1: are back, and yet they've won two series and lost
- 22:46Speaker 1: two series and of trying to avoid a sweep. The
- 22:49Speaker 1: Yanks need more pieces. I don't know how many times
- 22:52Speaker 1: you able to see it before you have to realize
- 22:54Speaker 1: they need more pieces to be successful this year.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Well, I mean, obviously I got off to that hot
- 23:01Speaker 2: start and everybody the Torpedo bats again. We have we
- 23:05Speaker 2: have to see what happens with with those torpedo bats,
- 23:08Speaker 2: but still you got to hit the baseball. And the
- 23:10Speaker 2: weather has been so frigid, you know, for both the
- 23:13Speaker 2: Mets and the Yankees in the games that they've been
- 23:15Speaker 2: playing this week. Again, I don't think it's time to panic.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I'm sure that they'll try to add a piece or two.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Maybe when Stanton comes back, maybe he'll spark some life
- 23:30Speaker 2: into them. I don't know, because the guy's always hurt.
- 23:35Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, obviously, last couple of days in
- 23:39Speaker 2: Detroit they scored a total one run. You know that
- 23:42Speaker 2: that's not going to win many games. But the Yankees
- 23:45Speaker 2: have a good lineup, they have a good team, and again, uh,
- 23:50Speaker 2: the American League is forgiving. They'll they'll be in it.
- 23:55Speaker 2: They'll be in it. They can, they can take care
- 23:58Speaker 2: of any slump set they were in and they around.
- 24:02Speaker 1: The series stretch is the Diamondbacks and they're going to
- 24:05Speaker 1: be a threat in the National League once again. Am
- 24:07Speaker 1: I right? I think they will be, no question.
- 24:11Speaker 2: No question. And Alex, last week you're wondering when when
- 24:14Speaker 2: the Dodgers are gonna lose their first game. So the
- 24:16Speaker 2: Dodgers were eight er and then they've lost four out
- 24:19Speaker 2: of five so as I said to you, even the
- 24:21Speaker 2: great teams are gonna lose sixty games.
- 24:23Speaker 1: About oh, and I mean, look, it's gonna happen.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Are the Nationals back, I don't know for sure, but
- 24:30Speaker 1: it was an impressive series against the Dodgers, though, sure,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I mean we.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Were they won in seven or two win seven, and
- 24:36Speaker 2: they beat the Dodgers back to back. It is impressive.
- 24:41Speaker 1: So yeah, there's that. And I think the torpedo bat,
- 24:43Speaker 1: which was approved by Rob Manford, by the way, that
- 24:45Speaker 1: talk is kind of died down a little bit, and
- 24:48Speaker 1: just because it's it's an accepted thing, all right. The
- 24:50Speaker 1: other thing about this whole baseball season is still that
- 24:53Speaker 1: the razor in steinbern Er Field, and you watch those games,
- 24:56Speaker 1: it's just kind of weird that two of our major
- 24:58Speaker 1: league teams are in these minor leagues. You've got the
- 25:00Speaker 1: A's and Sacramento and you've got the Raise. Is this
- 25:04Speaker 1: a baseball problem or an ownership problem? But they've been
- 25:09Speaker 1: trying to get a field in Tampa forever.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I don't think it's a baseball problem. I think it's
- 25:12Speaker 2: a it's a political problem. I think it's a political problem. Well,
- 25:17Speaker 2: let's look at Oakland real quick. Oakland has lost the Raiders,
- 25:23Speaker 2: they've lost the A's, And yeah, you could say they
- 25:25Speaker 2: lost they lost the Warriors, but the Warriors went just
- 25:29Speaker 2: went to the other part of town or across the bridge.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Same thing, like the Nets moving from the Meadowlands ten
- 25:35Speaker 2: twelve miles to Brooklyn. Yes, they're in different jurisdictions, but
- 25:43Speaker 2: this is a political problem, it's not an ownership problem.
- 25:47Speaker 2: And I could tell you one thing. Steinbrander Field is
- 25:52Speaker 2: much better than the Stayme that the A's are playing in.
- 25:55Speaker 2: At least, while it's small, Steinbranner Field looks classy, looks
- 26:00Speaker 2: like it looks has some Major league attributes to it.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Uh Suitter Park, UH does not. And I watched a
- 26:10Speaker 2: couple of games parts a couple of games uh in Oakland,
- 26:14Speaker 2: and the Met's are gonna be in Sacramento to play
- 26:16Speaker 2: Oakland this weekend, so everybody in New yorkan see, yeah
- 26:20Speaker 2: they they it's okay, but it's not as nice as
- 26:22Speaker 2: starburn A Field. I don't know what's gonna happen to
- 26:25Speaker 2: Tampa Bay. I don't know if they're gonna build a
- 26:27Speaker 2: stadium there, if they're gonna move. Apparently the stadium site
- 26:32Speaker 2: for Saint Petersburgh is not gonna happen. Uh. That that
- 26:36Speaker 2: that's a problem for Majors League baseball, and that's Sanford
- 26:40Speaker 2: won't expand until until the Oakland situation, which we know
- 26:46Speaker 2: always going to looks like it's gonna be in Vegas.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Looks like there's gonna be no issue there. But then
- 26:50Speaker 2: with the Tampa Bay problem and then Alex I'm gonna
- 26:53Speaker 2: make my prediction that's when you're gonna see radical realignment,
- 26:57Speaker 2: which I am against. That's where you're gonna see the
- 26:59Speaker 2: break up of the American and National leagues, which is terrible.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I know you've been saying Manfred has been kind of
- 27:06Speaker 1: gunning for that, and that's cure when they when both
- 27:09Speaker 1: leagues have DH that was kind of a move and
- 27:11Speaker 1: then everybody's playing interleague. It's just it's too much of
- 27:15Speaker 1: a schmazzle. As they would say, it's.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Too much of a smuzzle.
- 27:20Speaker 1: You know, I agree, My dad would say that. So,
- 27:23Speaker 1: you know, it's been a it's been a weird start
- 27:25Speaker 1: to Major League baseball. I mean, the Yanks somehow are
- 27:27Speaker 1: still on top by or you know, in the top
- 27:30Speaker 1: of the East right now by only half a game. Oh,
- 27:33Speaker 1: the Vlad extension Now, fourteen years is a lot to
- 27:37Speaker 1: put on a guy. I mean, what are they really invested, Like,
- 27:41Speaker 1: do they really think he can go fourteen years and
- 27:43Speaker 1: bring him a championship. That's quite an investment for the guy.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Oh, he's in his mid twenties. He's coming off his
- 27:49Speaker 2: best average year last year. I think he hit three
- 27:51Speaker 2: twenty three. I'm glad. I'm glad that he's sawing with
- 27:59Speaker 2: Toronto because every rumor was all the met's gone away
- 28:02Speaker 2: from the next year and they let Alfonso go. Alex
- 28:07Speaker 2: Guerrero Junior was way overweight last year and he's lost
- 28:13Speaker 2: some weight. He still looks out of shape to me.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I don't know how dedicated he is. So Toronto tried
- 28:20Speaker 2: to get a couple of guys. They tried to get Alonzo,
- 28:22Speaker 2: they tried to get o' tawi, they tried to get
- 28:26Speaker 2: even Solo. I think they were in on it for
- 28:28Speaker 2: a while. So they were desperate. Fourteen years for a
- 28:33Speaker 2: guy who I hope is dedicated to his craft. It's risky,
- 28:38Speaker 2: but that's that's the stakes nowadays and in baseball.
- 28:42Speaker 1: So I watch about your favorite memory of j D
- 28:47Speaker 1: and Sam John Davidson and Sam Rosen in the booth
- 28:50Speaker 1: tonight one more time. I mean, I just want to
- 28:53Speaker 1: hear Sam go it's a power play goal and JD go,
- 28:56Speaker 1: oh baby, you know, one more time?
- 28:58Speaker 2: Do it?
- 28:58Speaker 1: One more time?
- 28:59Speaker 2: Louis right? Well again. John Davidson, who played hockey actually
- 29:06Speaker 2: got to the finals with the Rangers in seventy nine,
- 29:09Speaker 2: is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, not as a
- 29:12Speaker 2: hockey player, as a broadcaster. Outstanding broadcaster on both a
- 29:17Speaker 2: local and national level. I am surprised considering that he's
- 29:22Speaker 2: a senior advisor for the Columbus Blue Jackets, that that
- 29:27Speaker 2: he's allowed to do this. Would he used to be
- 29:29Speaker 2: GM of them? I'm not mistaken, and he right and
- 29:32Speaker 2: he was, and also he was Jam of the Rangers.
- 29:35Speaker 2: But yeah, he'll be good to hear him tonight. Sam
- 29:38Speaker 2: Rosan also in NHL Hall of Fame, deservingly so great
- 29:41Speaker 2: hockey broadcaster. Yeah, it'll be. It'll be nice to nice
- 29:45Speaker 2: to hear them again. It will be. And the two
- 29:48Speaker 2: great broadcasters are obviously two great friends. And it's just
- 29:51Speaker 2: a shame that the Rangers are giving Sam Rose in
- 29:56Speaker 2: such a bad season and go out on what to.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Send up almost like you should come back and do
- 30:00Speaker 1: it again next year. But you know one last thing
- 30:04Speaker 1: before I let you go. Ray Shierro, who was gym
- 30:07Speaker 1: of the Devils and Penguins, you were involved in that
- 30:10Speaker 1: whole Metal Ends era. Did you have any run ins
- 30:12Speaker 1: with Raciero? Was he there during your time?
- 30:15Speaker 2: I did not when I was there Lulamarello as a
- 30:17Speaker 2: general manager. Ray Shiro, son of a very famous head
- 30:22Speaker 2: coach for the Philadelphia Flies when they won back to
- 30:25Speaker 2: back titles in seventy four to seventy five. Fred Chiro
- 30:28Speaker 2: first expansion team to win a Cup in in seventy
- 30:31Speaker 2: three seventy four when they beat when they upset the
- 30:33Speaker 2: Bruins four games two. The next year they beat Buffalo
- 30:37Speaker 2: four games to two. Then they actually made the They
- 30:40Speaker 2: made the Stanley Cup Final again in seventy five seventy
- 30:42Speaker 2: six with Fred Schiro, but they lost to the Canadians
- 30:45Speaker 2: and fourth straight great team. Great coach became a Ranger
- 30:50Speaker 2: coach and was the coach of the Davidson goaltender contending
- 30:54Speaker 2: team that lost in the finals to the Montreal Canadians,
- 30:57Speaker 2: and a Ratio was his was his son, so a
- 31:01Speaker 2: great hockey family, and it's a shame that he died
- 31:04Speaker 2: at such a young age, at sixty two.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Well, no one can never forget the Broadstreet bullies. So
- 31:08Speaker 1: you're saying he was coach of the broad Street Bullies, then.
- 31:11Speaker 2: He was a coach of the broad Street foot bullies.
- 31:13Speaker 2: He encouraged the balls, broad Street broke bullies. If anybody
- 31:17Speaker 2: thinks that what they see now is dirty, and I
- 31:21Speaker 2: don't care who it is that you think it's a
- 31:24Speaker 2: dirty play, whether it's a Tom Wilson or a Rempy
- 31:27Speaker 2: throwing her low, that's nothing. What we saw in the
- 31:31Speaker 2: sixties and seventies, Alex, there were nobody that were dirtier
- 31:36Speaker 2: than the Broad Street bullies. They were. They intimidated you,
- 31:41Speaker 2: They intimidated guys. I mean it was unbelievable. Remember in
- 31:45Speaker 2: those days they let you can clear the benches in
- 31:50Speaker 2: a brawl, and that's what led to a big rule
- 31:53Speaker 2: change that no more cleaning of the benches. They were dirty.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Bob Kelly, Dave Schultz, we can go right down the
- 31:59Speaker 2: line with that. Roston.
- 32:01Speaker 1: And by the way, I never forget the highlights of
- 32:03Speaker 1: the Boston and Rangers duking it out of the garden
- 32:05Speaker 1: in the seats. But the that was something else with the.
- 32:09Speaker 2: December twenty third, nineteen seventy nine, yours truly was there
- 32:14Speaker 2: and you went to all right.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Well, and by the way I read the other the
- 32:20Speaker 1: slap shots, there was a lot of scenes that were
- 32:22Speaker 1: not rehearsed. That was just the handsome brothers being the
- 32:25Speaker 1: handsome brothers.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Well, that's that movie slap shot in the sixties and seventies. Yeah,
- 32:32Speaker 2: the NHL is pretty close to that.
- 32:35Speaker 1: That is crazy, But all right, my favorite scene from
- 32:39Speaker 1: that real quick on Terminalo's take is when Newman shoots
- 32:42Speaker 1: and hits the organists in the head as he's doing
- 32:44Speaker 1: That was the best scene for me.
- 32:45Speaker 2: That's that's a good one. But I mean, that's that's
- 32:50Speaker 2: really what the NHL was a little bit alike. There's
- 32:53Speaker 2: no doubt about it.
- 32:54Speaker 1: And I know fans wanted to go back to that.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I think they and I even I see it. When
- 32:57Speaker 1: the fight's about to start, the ref jumps in almost
- 33:00Speaker 1: immediately half the time I noticed.
- 33:01Speaker 2: So. Well again, before we why no, we have to
- 33:05Speaker 2: wrap this up, but before we go. Last week there
- 33:09Speaker 2: was a fight between Carolina and I can't recall who,
- 33:14Speaker 2: and one of the players was thrown to the ice
- 33:17Speaker 2: and almost hit his head on the ice. That can't happen.
- 33:20Speaker 2: And it happened the same the next night in another
- 33:22Speaker 2: game where a guy was thrown to the eyes. The
- 33:25Speaker 2: NHL obviously doesn't want to see somebody die in the ice,
- 33:28Speaker 2: but if they allow stuff like that to happen, you're
- 33:31Speaker 2: gonna see death on the eyes. You hit your head
- 33:34Speaker 2: on that, on that, on that ice, service, you're done.
- 33:39Speaker 1: There's also and I think we've talked about this before,
- 33:41Speaker 1: there's also this idea that players respect each other's bodies now,
- 33:44Speaker 1: meaning they know these bodies are worth so much money,
- 33:47Speaker 1: so they're not gonna beat them up entirely anymore. And
- 33:49Speaker 1: it's sort of like a unwritten rule. It seems like
- 33:52Speaker 1: that they're not gonna truly beat up anybody like they
- 33:55Speaker 1: used to because of the monetary value of their their
- 33:58Speaker 1: bodies right now.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Well, of course, these guys are making more money. They
- 34:07Speaker 2: don't make as much money as teams in other sports.
- 34:09Speaker 2: But you have that, you have the safety issue. Alex
- 34:15Speaker 2: guys guys did stuff that thin get in the old days.
- 34:18Speaker 2: And it's close to the NBA too, that they didn't
- 34:20Speaker 2: even get thrown out of the game or they didn't
- 34:22Speaker 2: get suspended. You know, with some of the things that
- 34:25Speaker 2: Rempe had this year, Alex in the seventies, he wouldn't
- 34:29Speaker 2: even been he wouldn't have been suspended at all. How about.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Game for ten minutes just for yelling at the ref.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I mean that was pretty soft on the ref.
- 34:39Speaker 2: But yeah, no, I wonder what he said to him.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Anyway, Lous, we went a little bit all over, but
- 34:50Speaker 1: that's okay because we haven't really done a deep dive
- 34:52Speaker 1: on a lot of this stuff, so I'm glad we
- 34:54Speaker 1: did that and Johnny throughout the first pitch. I think
- 34:57Speaker 1: they were honored at City Field today, so I got
- 34:59Speaker 1: to wrap up. They rather Rick Petito on that first
- 35:01Speaker 1: pitch with Saint John's alum Johnny Franco catching it.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Yes, boy, Johnny Franco is probably one of the more
- 35:09Speaker 2: prominent Saint Saint John alum's, that's for sure.
- 35:13Speaker 1: No apparently wears his heart on the sleeve when it
- 35:14Speaker 1: comes to Saint John's.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Yes it does. And for the Metsies because Saint John's.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Here, Lou, always a pleasure. We'll talk to you soon
- 35:21Speaker 1: on Tormalo's take.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Thank you, Alex,
