- 4:00twenty fifth year by Hallie Adams for The Daily Independent.
- 4:05Bluegrass music rang from the top of Poppy Mountain Campgrounds
- 4:09last week as Rudy Fest celebrated its twenty fifth year.
- 4:14The week long bluegrass festival kicked off Saturday, June twentieth
- 4:18with Charlie Woods and Deep Hollow and wrapped up Saturday
- 4:23night with Lonesome River Band and Brandon Rickman. Traditional bluegrass
- 4:29and southern gospel musician Doyle Lawson announced his retirement in
- 4:33twenty twenty one. Lawson said he came out of retirement
- 4:37this year and was excited to be back on the
- 4:40rudy Fest stage. One of my favorite places to appear
- 4:44was at Rudy Fest, and the folks that do this
- 4:48are just so easy and good to work with, said Lawson.
- 4:52I am only doing a handful of concerts this year,
- 4:55and this was one of the seven that I chose
- 4:58to do. Of musical performances, rudy Fest raffled Hailey's Hailey
- 5:05Bays Live painting of Hannah Harper Saturday Night, and all
- 5:09proceeds raised go toward fostering possibilities and memory of Tim Baldwin.
- 5:16The bluegrass community lost two Rudy Fest legends this year,
- 5:20Alan Styx Hicks and Chris Bradford twitch On Tuesday, June
- 5:26twenty third, the festival paid tribute to both Hicks and
- 5:29Bradford to honor the impact they had on the festival.
- 5:34Paula Hinton, creator of Years of Farming Bluegrass Show in Flemingsburg,
- 5:39attended several years of Rudy Fest alongside Hicks and Bradford.
- 5:44She said, seeing hicks chair placed on the side of
- 5:47the stage in his honor was a bittersweet moment. When
- 5:52I have left festivals, I think, wow, I need to
- 5:54tell Styx or that's a song he likes. Hinton said,
- 5:59there's moments when it is really sad, but we just
- 6:02have to think that things are better for both of
- 6:04them now. Hinton said, Rudy Fest is more than just
- 6:08a festival. To her, it is a family reunion. You
- 6:13see somebody that you have seen at another one festival,
- 6:17or maybe you have not seen them since this time
- 6:20last year. Hinton said, I just think it's wonderful the
- 6:24friendships and the fellowships that we have with it. Grammy
- 6:29winning vocalist and musician Dan Taminsky played his first Rudy
- 6:35Fest when he was a member of Alison Kraus's band
- 6:38Union Station. Taminsky said, the most important part about music
- 6:43is to come and experience it live. I know there's
- 6:47all the room for recorded music, and there's so much
- 6:51of that that I know is a big part of
- 6:53people's lives, but it doesn't touch you in the same
- 6:56way as when you actually get off your butt and
- 6:59come to see live music. Tamtski said, the people that
- 7:04you meet, the experiences that you have in the process
- 7:07of chasing the music means everything, and that's what I
- 7:12encourage people to do. Rudy Fest has started planning for
- 7:17next year's festival and will release more information at a
- 7:22later date. To keep up to date with Rudy Fest,

- 10:10Summer Motion into discothech by Tammy Hetzer Womack for The
- 10:15Daily Independent. No drive talking here. The New York Beg's
- 10:20Tribute band is happily headed to Ashland's summer motion pad.
- 10:25It is time to boogie down. What happens when you
- 10:29place the most faceted, sharpest tax fashionably flashy, technically trained
- 10:36musicians on Long Island with the far out of this
- 10:40world musical catalog of big shot brilliant Begs locomote a
- 10:46few nineteen seventies flower children South Ashland beat Nix along
- 10:51with a handful of Travolta talented dancers who remember the
- 10:55hustle glides from Tomcat's Gym Class Matter with Bahamian wannabes.
- 11:02Well you get the recipe for Summer Motion. Thursday, July second,
- 11:07at nine pm. The New York Begs is a hand
- 11:11pick phenomenon singing enduring rubric of songs you remember from
- 11:17acclimated Gibbs Brothers, a simpler time when Staying Alive was
- 11:22not the Red Cross CPR educational national anthem. Growing up
- 11:27on Long Island a classically trained musician like Peter Mazio
- 11:31could form a garage band and make a career following
- 11:35his dreams of playing in the finest Manhattan clubs alongside
- 11:39the best boys on the block, Mazzio and kids he
- 11:44grew up with making music and the noise New Yorker
- 11:47neighbors complained about way back Whip. Then Peter Mazio and
- 11:53the Hit Squad rocked all the best bars and bar
- 11:56Mitzvah's in the greater Tri State area. Long Island had
- 12:01this incredible thriving music scene, electric and we were an
- 12:06extremely popular band. Everyone knew us. We were able to
- 12:11express ourselves, play the crowd favorites or our own music.
- 12:15Reminiscence Mazio from his Florida home. We had a wide
- 12:20range of talents, but what made it great all of
- 12:23us are friends. The band was offshoot for many of
- 12:28its instrumentalist members playing studio gigs or backgrounds for big
- 12:32name music makers and nineteen sixties favorites. Wistfully, Just like
- 12:39anything in life, pop music enjoys highs and lows, and
- 12:43Mazio longed for a new set to engage the band.
- 12:47He mused a wild idea to a bandmate form a
- 12:50b G's tribute show. The American East Coast did not
- 12:55really have a consistent group playing the megastar songs like
- 12:58Stayin Alive, power ballad, love songs like how Deep Is
- 13:03Your Love and More Than a Woman, or mainstream radio
- 13:07hit night Fever. I went home and hit the internet.
- 13:11Mazzio detailed and I learned there was room to make
- 13:14some money forming a Beg's tribute show. A friend mentioned
- 13:19the Beg's brainstorm to general manager of former b B
- 13:23King Blues Club and Grill. He loved the concept and
- 13:27immediately booked Mazio's unformed band to perform within the month
- 13:33at their sprawling, touristy Times Square location. He quickly gathered
- 13:38a group from every acquaintance and genre of music, with
- 13:41Mazzio planning to personify falsetto Fay frontman Barry Gibb. It
- 13:48was not his typical vocal range, but there was not
- 13:52time to worry about. The Stridents members have since included
- 13:56legendary bandmates of the Alan Parsons Project, Happy Together, Tour,
- 14:02Meat Loaf, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Riot Hermann's, Hermit's, Enrique Iglesias,
- 14:11the Rippington's and Moore. The band sold out bb Kings
- 14:19to rave reviews. It took fire this little idea put
- 14:23into motion. Mazzio said. It all started as one set
- 14:27of the Beg's best. Now it is a ninety minute
- 14:30show that's still commercially relevant even today, decades since the
- 14:34Beg's gained popularity. Mazio learned to hit the high notes
- 14:39via muscle memory. Un honed act Summer Motion expects a
- 14:45fast moving playlist of Beg's you recall and enjoyed double
- 14:49takes of the glossy posters girls Scotch taped to childhood
- 14:54bedroom walls. Mazio pauses during the show to offer small
- 14:59antidotes of his street behind the songs, tidbits of Beg's
- 15:03by gone times. Mazio never met Barry Gibb, but it
- 15:08is common for fans to approach him saying they know
- 15:10GiB They tell me he would be enormously proud of
- 15:15our presentation. My goal is to always display the Begs
- 15:20in the most positive, professional light, Mazio said as he
- 15:25takes opening spotlight. Mazio's purposeuy hits the high notes to
- 15:30set the table for fun ahead, filling the footlights with
- 15:34enthusiastic performers full of faculty. In Forte we see smiles
- 15:40coming right back at us, an ocean of bell bottoms,
- 15:43all the clothing of the nineteen seventies and the disco era,
- 15:47said Mazzio, who relocated from Long Island to Florida during
- 15:52the COVID pandemic. With the city's widespread shut down, he
- 15:57thinks listeners take to the show do to his slight
- 16:00resemblance to Barry Gibb. Yes, his dirty, blonde, feathered and
- 16:05koffed hair do is his real hair? That is the
- 16:09most asked question of Mazio after playing casinos, season seasonal festivals,
- 16:16and big parties since their twenty fourteen inception, mirroring the
- 16:20Gibbs family into his sixties. Expect to see them after
- 16:25the show, milling about the carnival midway before summer motions
- 16:29show time. They plan to paint the town. We are
- 16:33friendly people and we want to become familiar with your hometown.
- 16:37We want to eat in your restaurants, rest in your hotel,
- 16:41look out the hotel window and see the stage we
- 16:44will play on later, enjoy the local environment, and then
- 16:48leave knowing we've made a bunch of new friends. He
- 16:52is thrilled to spoon out the smooth sounds of the
- 16:55generations younger people introduced to the songs through dreaming. Some

- 18:20got out of jail and then enticed their special needs
- 18:23daughter who did not have the ability to recognize danger,
- 18:28by luring her with alcohol and running around. Any child
- 18:33predator should be behind bars for a very long time,
- 18:37they wrote. You Beavis hurt us, but God makes a
- 18:41way to heal. This is the hardest thing I've done,
- 18:45but I'm going to forgive you. I hope and pray
- 18:48you find the Lord. Beavis was previously convicted of second

- 21:14Shame on you, Judge Brian McLeod said to Kelly, you've
- 21:18caused great harm to people. I hope you sit in
- 21:21prison and wallow in shame. In other news, local dealership
- 21:27donates van to Shoes for Kids. By Allison Scott for
- 21:32the Daily Independent. More than five thousand cars rolled off
- 21:36Mark Porter's lot last year, but this week, a customed
- 21:40pink mini van covered in pairs of shoes rolled out
- 21:44of his lot for free. With a different purpose, Mark
- 21:49Porter Chevrolet of Ashland donated a mini van to Shoes
- 21:52for Kids, a non profit organization that provides shoes to
- 21:56children in need throughout the tri State. I was approached
- 22:01about five months ago from Shoes for Kids and they
- 22:04needed a vehicle to help transport the shoes because their
- 22:08own vehicle broke down. We decided we were going to
- 22:12help them. Porter said, we got a van done up
- 22:15for them and we donated the van to them to
- 22:18take their shoes around all the different schools and areas
- 22:23they go to give the kids shoes that don't have them.
- 22:27Operated by the Oak Street Chapel in flat Woods. The
- 22:31volunteer organization began in twenty twenty one, providing seventy five
- 22:36pairs of shoes to three schools in Greenop County. Expanding
- 22:40each year through the help of fundraisers and donations, The
- 22:44organization provided twenty five hundred plus pairs of shoes to
- 22:48children from fifty eight schools across six counties last school year.
- 22:55The vehicle is custom wrapped in bright pink with pairs
- 22:58of shoes along with Porter's name, the Shoes for Kids logo,
- 23:03and in lovery loving memory of Dorothy Spilman wrote out
- 23:08across the side. Porter was approached with the idea by Spilman,
- 23:13a volunteer of the organization, who was unable to see
- 23:16the vehicle before she passed last month. I wish she
- 23:20could have seen this dream come true. Porter said it
- 23:24was her dream. Spilman's son, Jim, was at the dealership
- 23:28with the organization while they all reflected on Spilman's legacy
- 23:32and her dream. Dorothy would be jumping up and down
- 23:36right now, said Serri Sherry Archie. Prior to receiving the minivan,
- 23:42Archie had used her personal vehicle to shop and deliver
- 23:46shoes before it broke down. We came and met with
- 23:50Mark Porter and told him we needed a vehicle, and
- 23:53he didn't hesitate, said Barbara Littrell. He has been a
- 23:56wonderful help to our organization. We appreciate it more than
- 24:01he could. We could ever say this donation will really
- 24:05help our program. Porter explained the donation was personal as
- 24:09he remembers what it was like to be a child
- 24:12in need of new shoes. As a nonprofit, they all
- 24:16said the biggest payoff from what they do is seeing
- 24:18the children's reactions to getting new shoes. It's their hugs
- 24:23and their reactions. They'll jump up and down, show you
- 24:26how fast they can run. They'll skip up and down
- 24:29the hall. Littrell said, I love it. Another volunteer agreed.
- 24:35We've had kids ask can I keep these? Do I
- 24:38have to give them back at the end of the day,
- 24:41or now I don't have to wear my brother's shoes.
- 24:45One little boy said, I can mark it off my
- 24:48Christmas list. Now those are the things that make us
- 24:51go back over the summer. The organization will work toward
- 24:55fundraising money to put toward purchasing new shoes in the
- 24:59ear upcoming school year. Next Bellefonte Fourth of July tradition
