- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 0:00Speaker 2: You've got football coaches show Husky's travel to Rice in Houston,
- 0:05Speaker 2: Texas to play on Saturday afternoon. Try to make it
- 0:08Speaker 2: five in a row against the Owls. We'll be there,
- 0:11Speaker 2: of course. Pregame starts in ninety minutes prior to the
- 0:13Speaker 2: opening kick around three. Jim. The Husky offense has been percolating.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I mean really, two hundred ninety seven yards through the air,
- 0:21Speaker 2: one hundred and seventy one on average on the ground,
- 0:24Speaker 2: averaging thirty seven points a game. And it wasn't too
- 0:27Speaker 2: long ago before you got here. Husky's had trouble scoring
- 0:30Speaker 2: twenty points and it's hard to win in college football
- 0:33Speaker 2: if you don't score. So scoring now with your offense
- 0:38Speaker 2: has to give the defense, I think a little bit
- 0:41Speaker 2: of confidence, feeling like, look, we're going to be do
- 0:44Speaker 2: our best, but if something happens, we feel like our
- 0:46Speaker 2: offense could really help us.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I'll tell you it gives confidence to me in terms
- 0:52Speaker 3: of making some decisions, in terms of game management. You know,
- 0:58Speaker 3: going forward on fourth down, your if your defense is
- 1:01Speaker 3: playing really, really well, you feel a little bit more
- 1:03Speaker 3: confident going forward on fourth down. And if you don't
- 1:05Speaker 3: get it, you know, that your defense is going to
- 1:07Speaker 3: go out there and save you. Same thing on offense.
- 1:10Speaker 3: You know, uh, you know, maybe you can, you can
- 1:13Speaker 3: take some chances that you wouldn't typically take in a
- 1:17Speaker 3: situation on the situations on the defense, if your if
- 1:20Speaker 3: your offense is playing well. But really, you know, what
- 1:22Speaker 3: we're trying to do, Mike, as you know, is play
- 1:25Speaker 3: the complete game. We're all three phases are playing well
- 1:29Speaker 3: at the same time.
- 1:30Speaker 1: That's a hard thing to do.
- 1:31Speaker 3: It's a hard thing to do in football and college football,
- 1:34Speaker 3: but it's something that we're constantly talking.
- 1:36Speaker 1: About and striving to do.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And uh, when we get that going, then I think
- 1:40Speaker 3: any team that gets that going is tough to beat.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, no question about it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Along those lines, Chris Freeman the placekicker, eleven in a row,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I like that number. Can we get them to the Giants?
- 1:52Speaker 2: Maybe soon? They can't make it? For crying out out right,
- 1:56Speaker 2: we don't want to die.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Yeah, he's dependable, really is Skyler Bell?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Again? Ten catches one hundred and twenty five yards another touchdown.
- 2:07Speaker 2: The multiple times that he's able to get the ball
- 2:10Speaker 2: into his hands. You hear a lot of guys on
- 2:13Speaker 2: the pro side, all they want touches. They want to
- 2:16Speaker 2: you know, they want to be throwing the ball to
- 2:18Speaker 2: but Bell, you don't hear much from him except he
- 2:20Speaker 2: comes up with ten catches. He's kind of like a
- 2:23Speaker 2: quiet assassin in my mind.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Well, he's a team player, you know, Mike is. He
- 2:27Speaker 3: he's got his ego in check. He respects his teammates.
- 2:34Speaker 3: He's coachable, he's dependable. Joe ass trust in him. He's
- 2:39Speaker 3: not one of those guys that if the ball's not
- 2:41Speaker 3: coming his way for a few plays, that he gets
- 2:44Speaker 3: out of sorts.
- 2:46Speaker 1: He's a team first guy.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And to have a team first guy that's also productive
- 2:51Speaker 3: like he is, is a blessing.
- 2:53Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:54Speaker 3: He doesn't let his ego overrule you know, his his
- 2:57Speaker 3: individual ego never overrules that ego of the team, which
- 3:00Speaker 3: is us having team success. And when you have guys
- 3:02Speaker 3: like that on your team, you always have a chance,
- 3:04Speaker 3: you know, especially when they're talented players like Skyler Is.
- 3:08Speaker 1: You know, jimour with us.
- 3:09Speaker 2: So the Yukon football coaches show another guy, John Nider
- 3:12Speaker 2: a couple of catching sixty nine yards. He is getting
- 3:14Speaker 2: loose in the secondary. First touchdown as a Husky, He's
- 3:19Speaker 2: starting to remind me of Julian Edelman or Wes Welkerve
- 3:22Speaker 2: and the way he gets loose and makes plays. When
- 3:25Speaker 2: you look at him, you go, well, he's not that
- 3:27Speaker 2: imposing physically, but this guy is a real pain. If
- 3:31Speaker 2: I'm looking at Yukon as a defensive coordinator.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I like that you say that he's
- 3:37Speaker 3: not imposing, because I think that's what opponents think. But
- 3:40Speaker 3: you know, John's a six foot two, almost two hundred
- 3:42Speaker 3: pound kid, you know, so he's he's got some size
- 3:47Speaker 3: to him. I think kind of some sometimes we carries himself,
- 3:52Speaker 3: you know, nonchalant, you know, very calm.
- 3:57Speaker 1: He can lull.
- 3:57Speaker 3: People to sleep a little bit. But we've seen he's
- 4:00Speaker 3: got excellent hands, he runs excellent routes. He's very dependable
- 4:03Speaker 3: and trustworthy. Joe certainly has confidence in him. Our players have,
- 4:09Speaker 3: you know, great respect for him. And it's really to me,
- 4:13Speaker 3: you know, that's one of the great things about team
- 4:15Speaker 3: sports college football is when a guy like John Nyder,
- 4:17Speaker 3: who's a walk on wide, walk on quarterback, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 3: shows up now as a scholarship receiver making plays for US,
- 4:24Speaker 3: scoring his first touchdown, you know, on Saturday at BC.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It's just it's pretty dang cool.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And really what was neat is to see how his
- 4:33Speaker 3: teammates reacted when he caught that ball. You know, because
- 4:36Speaker 3: everyone on this everyone in this building, respects the heck
- 4:38Speaker 3: out of John Knyder.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah. Well that's the beauty of college sports.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I feel.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I've been around the pros a long time, and college
- 4:45Speaker 2: is most recently. I mean, the players, the youth, the
- 4:49Speaker 2: hope that they have when they're playing the game, and
- 4:52Speaker 2: the real camaraderie. I mean, I think, you know, fans
- 4:55Speaker 2: come to the games and the stands and they watch
- 4:57Speaker 2: the players on the field, but they don't get inside
- 5:00Speaker 2: the locker room. They don't see that camaraderie factor, which
- 5:03Speaker 2: I think is a huge part of any good sports team,
- 5:07Speaker 2: especially a football team.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's different, you know, it's just different than pros.
- 5:12Speaker 3: These guys, you know, they they spend probably more time
- 5:15Speaker 3: together and doing the pros. You know, they're they're in
- 5:17Speaker 3: classes together, they're on campus together, they're roommates, they're in
- 5:23Speaker 3: the locker room a lot together, lifting together, eating together.
- 5:27Speaker 3: It's it's very much a brotherhood, you know, and they
- 5:30Speaker 3: respect the hell out each other. They work for each other,
- 5:33Speaker 3: they like each other, That doesn't mean they always get along,
- 5:36Speaker 3: but they you know, our.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Team does, and it's just I don't know, it's just.
- 5:40Speaker 3: One of the things that's so as you said, so
- 5:42Speaker 3: great about college sports is the environment. You know that
- 5:45Speaker 3: a college atmosphere, and what we've tried to do is
- 5:48Speaker 3: create a professional environment and yet the professional.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Structure and remain you know, at college environment. And it's working.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no doubt about it. You can see it
- 5:58Speaker 2: in the efforts of the play on the field. We
- 6:01Speaker 2: got to talk a little bit about Joe Finiano here,
- 6:03Speaker 2: got by another minute for the break. But he's really
- 6:06Speaker 2: become a better and better player, hasn't he since you
- 6:09Speaker 2: first saw him. Is that a fair assessment. Yeah, I
- 6:12Speaker 2: think it's a very fair assessment.
- 6:13Speaker 3: You know, it's Joe's experienced, Joe's got a lot of
- 6:17Speaker 3: time in this offense. Joe works incredibly hard at his craft.
- 6:21Speaker 3: He's a guy that is always up here studying with
- 6:24Speaker 3: coach Tracy, watch ex for film, he gets together with
- 6:27Speaker 3: the receivers.
- 6:29Speaker 1: The thing about Joe that you love.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Is just his consistency, the consistency of his personality and
- 6:34Speaker 3: consistency of his work ethic, his standard and then his
- 6:38Speaker 3: performance on Saturday. And you know, I'm confident that Joe
- 6:42Speaker 3: keep working the same way and if he does, he
- 6:45Speaker 3: keeps having the same results. And I don't think that
- 6:47Speaker 3: he's anywhere near satisfied that he realizes there's a lot
- 6:52Speaker 3: of work to do, as does our whole team.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And so but I'll tell you what it's.
- 6:57Speaker 3: You know, having spent three years with him now and
- 7:00Speaker 3: knowing kind of some of the things that he has
- 7:01Speaker 3: has had to go on through with the injuries and
- 7:04Speaker 3: bringing in transfers and you know, some of the uncertainty,
- 7:07Speaker 3: it's really it's really great to see him having some
- 7:12Speaker 3: of the success that he's having right now.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really been a pleasure to watch him, no question.
- 7:18Speaker 1: We'll take a quick time out. We'll be back.
- 7:20Speaker 2: We got jus Vereen to talk about we all love
- 7:23Speaker 2: tight ends, and we'll talk to Jim Moore about that
- 7:25Speaker 2: and much more as we continue on the Yukon Football
- 7:28Speaker 2: Coaches Show here on Liar Field
