- 0:00What was your first impression of Africa?
- 0:22I've always been interested in Africa and I've come in here.
- 0:28It felt like home?
- 0:30Really?
- 0:31Yeah, it felt like home.
- 0:33I don't know.
- 0:34That's a feeling.
- 0:36I remember when I just came here, I went on a date with a scholar.
- 0:41And she went on a rant about black people.
- 0:45Okay.
- 0:46Right?
- 0:47I'm sitting here and I'm like, it's going to warm black.
- 0:52Right?
- 0:53And so I asked her.
- 0:54I'm saying, you know I'm black, right?
- 0:56And she said, yeah, but you're different.
- 0:59And I'm saying, how cold?
- 1:02And she said, you're a foreigner.
- 1:04Okay.
- 1:05I'm saying, okay.
- 1:06So because I'm a foreigner, you're a foreigner.
- 1:10You're a foreigner.
- 1:13What is the perception of Jamaican here?
- 1:18There's a lot about the music, right?
- 1:21Above Malay, it always works because during apartheid,
- 1:24regular music was used to help.
- 1:26Funnily, regular music was banned here.
- 1:30What's it?
- 1:31During apartheid.
- 1:32Because they didn't want any of these things.
- 1:33Because of the preparation of music.
- 1:34Right.
- 1:35The message.
- 1:36You understand?
- 1:37But here, they seem to have an awareness for regular, obviously.
- 1:41I met a lady yesterday.
- 1:42She was very excited.
- 1:43She goes, you're the first Jamaican that I've met in real life.
- 1:46Really?
- 1:47Yeah.
- 1:48I'll get a lot.
- 1:49She's like, I've got a lot of Jamaicans online.
- 1:51I've seen things on it.
- 1:52But I've never met one in person.
- 1:54I get that stuff.
- 1:55I was super excited.
- 1:58But it's an experience that happened to you since you've been here.
- 2:02That you would never seen coming.
- 2:04Getting arrested.
- 2:06Getting arrested.
- 2:07I was going to jail.
- 2:09Did you have to actually go to jail?
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:12What happened?
- 2:14So you come here.
- 2:15You live in your best life.
- 2:17And then you become a dad.
- 2:19Oh, yeah.
- 2:20You know?
- 2:21I mean, as I just said, you know, tell your kids that you're Jamaican.
- 2:27Yes.
- 2:28We always tell my daughter you're Jamaican.
- 2:32Okay.
- 2:33Because you're half German, half Jamaican.
- 2:35Yes.
- 2:36I mean, but she knows it.
- 2:37She even knows National Anthem.
- 2:38For Jamaica.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:40My girls sing it every day.
- 2:41Zip.
- 2:42Zip.
- 2:43One or three FM.
- 2:44I listen to that every day on the internet.
- 2:47Yes.
- 2:48And she always hear it.
- 2:49Six o'clock in the morning.
- 2:50Yeah.
- 2:51Well, six o'clock with you.
- 2:52Jamaica time.
- 2:53I think one o'clock here.
- 2:54Okay.
- 2:55Or something like that.
- 2:56Yeah.
- 2:57It's one o'clock here.
- 2:58So she always hear it.
- 2:59And I remember her mom was singing it one time.
- 3:01And she said to her mom, Mommy, no, no, don't sing it.
- 3:04You're not Jamaica.
- 3:05You're not Jamaica.
- 3:06The experience of raising a child here in terms of identity.
- 3:11You know, her mom's German, your Jamaica, and she was born here.
- 3:15Yeah.
- 3:16So she's going to be born and presumably raised for right now in South Africa.
- 3:20Yeah.
- 3:21So I'm just wondering what does that look like in terms of her identity?
- 3:25Was she identifies being South African, do you think?
- 3:31That's a good question because on paper, she's not.
- 3:34Okay.
- 3:35Yeah.
- 3:36She's not South African and people.
- 3:37No.
- 3:38How does it work?
- 3:39So if you're born here, you're not automatically.
- 3:40No.
- 3:41If none of your parents are South Africans, then technically you were just born here.
- 3:45Okay.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:47So we had to go through the whole process to get residency for her.
- 3:50For her, okay.
- 3:51You know what I mean?
- 3:52Anala, that's all.
- 3:53Is she in school?
- 3:54She's schooled?
- 3:55She's four, though.
- 3:57Okay.
- 3:58So she's about to go home.
- 3:59Okay.
- 4:00And in terms of, there's always people's different approach in terms of schooling, right?
- 4:06Like you have some people who are strictly international schools.
- 4:09You have other people who wherever they live, they want their child to be in that local community.
- 4:14Do you know or is it too soon?
- 4:16Have you guys thought about probably homeschooling?
- 4:19Okay.
- 4:20That's what I'm thinking.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:22We're leading because our mom wants that as well.
- 4:23Okay.
- 4:24She's leaning towards that.
- 4:26To Bali.
- 4:27Bali, I live them life under some yoga and teacher.
- 4:31Why do you say it like that?
- 4:33I just came from Bali.
- 4:34I love it.
- 4:35And I wasn't doing any yoga.
- 4:37But that's the vibe there.
- 4:38You know what I mean?
- 4:39Especially from the Europeans.
- 4:40You know, I'm going there and I'm zen and I'm all kind of.
- 4:44Oh my, I did zero yoga, okay?
- 4:47But I do agree that the energy.
- 4:49Yeah.
- 4:50Have you been?
- 4:51No.
- 4:52I love the energy.
- 4:53To me, it's the only place after Jamaica that makes me feel good for just existing.
- 4:58Really?
- 4:59Yeah.
- 5:00Definitely.
- 5:01I'll be there.
- 5:02I'll be there.
- 5:03I'll be there.
- 5:04One of my boys went there and it's a girl you need to.
- 5:06Yeah.
- 5:07From Australia because it's a stone throw away from Australia.
- 5:10You know what I mean?
- 5:11It's a girl you need to go outside and have one.
- 5:13So you're leaning towards homeschooling?
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:15That's really interesting.
- 5:16I feel like more people, more parents know are thinking about homeschooling.
- 5:20The thing is because for me, I'm growing up in a school system.
- 5:24Back home in Jamaica.
- 5:25You know what I mean?
- 5:26And the mats and the dishes.
- 5:28That's the way I have to do.
- 5:29You went to Meda Brook?
- 5:30Yeah.
- 5:31Okay.
- 5:32What school do you have?
- 5:33Hillel.
- 5:34Huh?
- 5:35Pantset.
- 5:36Pantset.
- 5:37Optone.
- 5:38People, it's so fun.
- 5:40Again, you talk about optone.
- 5:41I used to have people come to the restaurant.
- 5:43And the whole reason why I got into the restaurant business was to basically have an outlook
- 5:47to showcase Jamaica, right?
- 5:48Yeah.
- 5:49And to really challenge people's ideas of Jamaica.
- 5:52And so it's only Jamaicans that understand optone.
- 5:54So somebody comes and they're like, oh, so you're optone.
- 5:58And I feel like there's this weird age of people denying that they're optone.
- 6:03Yeah.
- 6:04So they're like trying to...
- 6:05More street.
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:07More credibility.
- 6:08Right.
- 6:09And I'm just like, no, no, no, I'm optone.
- 6:11Yeah, man.
- 6:12All day.
- 6:13Yeah.
- 6:14That's it.
- 6:15Again, maybe as human beings, we're just never satisfied with like where we are.
- 6:19So we're always trying to be something else because I remember in New York, there was this
- 6:23girl.
- 6:24She was from Mandavoon.
- 6:25She, back in the day, would have been white passing, right?
- 6:27She was peel, peel, peel, peel, peel.
- 6:29And lie not Mandavoon.
- 6:30She's from...
- 6:31Yeah, man.
- 6:32She's from Mandavoon.
- 6:33So then she is at my house warming and we're like around Americans and stuff.
- 6:37And she makes a statement.
- 6:39She's like, no, no, I don't know how to speak.
- 6:43Well, she's a Jamaican.
- 6:45Born and raised, you just reach New York, right?
- 6:48The other day in your adulthood.
- 6:50And you're telling these people that you don't.
- 6:52You don't know if I speak Patoa.
- 6:53So I said to her, my girl, my accent is so confused, right?
- 6:58It's so messed up.
- 7:00And I would never pretend that I don't understand or speak Patoa.
- 7:04Like, what?
- 7:05But for her, it was, oh no, Patoa is beneath me, right?
- 7:09Yeah, it's degrading.
- 7:10Yes, I'm being in New York was an opportunity to reinvent herself, right?
- 7:15Because no one there knows her.
- 7:16Well, I knew her.
- 7:17But nobody else knew her.
- 7:18So she was able to kind of be whoever she wanted to.
- 7:21And so when I challenged her on this idea,
- 7:23because I don't believe it is possible to grow up in Jamaica.
- 7:26I don't care how old Tony are.
- 7:27And you'll be able to...
- 7:28It is impossible.
- 7:29It is impossible, right?
- 7:31And so when I challenged her, she said, oh, well, you know,
- 7:35my dad didn't allow us to speak Patoa in our house.
- 7:39Which Patoa Patoa comes from.
- 7:41Yeah, yeah.
- 7:42And so I'm just wondering, are there things that you have seen in yourself
- 7:46that you...
- 7:47Because you speak about still growing, still learning,
- 7:50that you want to be better at for your child?
- 7:53Trying to teach your life art.
- 7:57She is at a stage where she...
- 8:03She knows there's a difference between what her mom looked like
- 8:07and how her dad looked like.
- 8:08Sure.
- 8:09Yannasan.
- 8:10And like her here is curly, right?
- 8:15Right?
- 8:16It's curly.
- 8:17And she always said, I want straight here.
- 8:20Okay.
- 8:21Like mommy.
- 8:22And I'm saying, no, here is beautiful.
- 8:24Why?
- 8:25Here is beautiful.
- 8:26So, you know, trying to tell her and trying to get her mom to say,
- 8:30yeah, we want you're here.
- 8:32We want you're here.
- 8:34We have you here.
- 8:35Yeah.
- 8:36Because you're here is beautiful.
- 8:37Everybody likes you're here and them things.
- 8:39You know what I mean?
- 8:40So, trying to get her to love herself.
- 8:44And I have to show her that through me as in loving myself.
- 8:51Right.
- 8:52You know what I'm saying?
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:54And then, you know, it will be passed down to her.
- 8:58You know what I mean?
- 8:59Love yourself.
- 9:00Daddy loves yourself.
- 9:01And once daddy loves himself, daddy can love everybody else.
- 9:05You know what I mean?
- 9:06And for me, I've come to terms here, I've accepted who I am.
- 9:14There are certain things that, back in the day, where people would, you know, try to say,
- 9:20yo, come to this, come to that, blah, blah, this and that.
- 9:23You know, before, kind of before, you know what I mean?
- 9:26And what I'm talking about is, you know what I mean?
- 9:31For those things, I know for me, it's I know.
- 9:35Okay.
- 9:36Immediately.
- 9:37If it don't suit me, I don't think twice.
- 9:41So before, would you say that you were more people pleasing?
- 9:44Yeah.
- 9:45Okay.
- 9:46Yeah.
- 9:47You know what I mean?
- 9:48People say, yo, wait a minute, I'm sorry.
- 9:49I rule.
- 9:50You know what I mean?
- 9:51And no, I'm like, yo, I'm going to the pond at that.
- 9:54Well, enjoy.
- 9:55It's funny that you say about your daughter and hair.
- 10:01And, you know, hair is so important, like within the black community.
- 10:06I always say to people, I feel like it's the only non-black thing about me,
- 10:10because I don't know nothing about hair.
- 10:12I'm not good with hair.
- 10:13If I had a small round head, I would share off my head long time.
- 10:16Really?
- 10:17It was not precious about hair, like even again being in England,
- 10:21and I remember once, I was filming this reality TV show,
- 10:25and the lady in the room was an older white woman from like the middle of nowhere,
- 10:29not London, all in the bush.
- 10:31And I could see her watching me whilst I was combing my hair.
- 10:35And I said to her, babes, you want to touch my hair?
- 10:38Because she was like, pre in the hair hard, right?
- 10:41And she goes, oh, no, no, no, I couldn't.
- 10:43I was like, babes, safe space.
- 10:44Yeah, you want to.
- 10:45Just go for it.
- 10:46Like, just go for it.
- 10:47And she was like, oh my gosh, it's so soft.
- 10:49I said, what did you think it was going to be?
- 10:51And she goes, I don't know.
- 10:52And the reason I share this is because again, I think that's like the Jamaicanness
- 10:57in the sense that I think black British people are fighting for so many other things
- 11:02that it then becomes yet another thing that they're being othered.
- 11:06Whereas for me, it was just like, you always hair on my head.
- 11:08You clearly haven't touched it.
- 11:09One thing is, here is identity, man.
- 11:13Even here in South Africa, you have students who are being banned
- 11:18from coming to school.
- 11:19But we're in Afro.
- 11:20Yeah.
- 11:21In Africa.
- 11:22How mad.
- 11:23Imagine that.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:25You can't even be yourself in your own country.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:30It's a bit deep.
- 11:32Yeah.
- 11:33Did you meet your partner here?
- 11:36You met in South Africa?
- 11:38Yeah, Facebook.
- 11:39You met her on Facebook?
- 11:40Yeah, she ran into my DMs, man.
- 11:42I mean, I'm joking, I'm joking.
- 11:46No, I accidentally fell into her DMs.
- 11:52And then was she also in the industry in modeling?
- 11:55No.
- 11:56Okay, but she was living here.
- 11:57Yeah.
- 11:58Okay, so she was living here before you?
- 12:00No, she had just moved here a year before.
- 12:05Okay.
- 12:06When I met her.
- 12:07And we always hear that raising mixed children, children with mixed heritage,
- 12:12that it seems to be very different experience when the mother is black versus the father, right?
- 12:20And so again, when you spoke about hair and saying that her mom needs to also encourage her,
- 12:28do you think, and this is quite timely in the sense that I saw this interview recently
- 12:34where a lady said that she's black and white women were coming to her with black children
- 12:41and they would attribute their negative behavior to maybe it's the dad side.
- 12:47And it wasn't necessarily a cognizant thing, right?
- 12:49So a mother would come to this lady for advice about parenting,
- 12:53and say, you know, for example, oh, he's really aggressive,
- 12:56or he's really loud and rumbunchious.
- 12:58And I'm just wondering, is that like a cultural thing to do with his dad?
- 13:01Or he's not focused, you know, is that, and the point is all of the negative attributes,
- 13:08she was saying it must come from the dad side, right?
- 13:11It must come from the black dream.
- 13:12Whereas anything that was positive was just normal, that's how kids are.
- 13:16That's society, that's how society is, that's what they have, you know, pushed us.
- 13:23But I guess maybe I'm just naive, because when I heard this, I was like, really?
- 13:28Like, because it's, because it's your child, right?
- 13:32Like it's one thing to talk about something intellectually,
- 13:35or make an observation.
- 13:37But I'm like, people are really out here having their own flesh and blood,
- 13:42and still holding on to these beliefs.
- 13:46It's stereotypes, stereotypes, and yeah, it makes no sense to be honest.
- 13:51I mean, a lot of times it's human behavior.
- 13:56It's human behavior, that's how kids act sometimes.
- 13:59And the thing is, sometimes if that's what they see, they will adapt that behavior.
- 14:08If they see their own and it doesn't necessarily have to be in the household,
- 14:13it could be schools, it could be anywhere that spend the day socially,
- 14:19and come back home with it.
- 14:21So it doesn't necessarily mean it comes from either appearance.
- 14:25It's just life.
- 14:26Yeah, exactly.
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:28My other thing that comes to mind is, do you guys have a similar parenting style?
- 14:33Because, again, people have stereotypes of what it means to grow up with, like, Jamaican parents.
- 14:38And whilst I find most of them deeply amusing from a comedic value,
- 14:42it's not my lived experience, right?
- 14:44So when you see people doing skits about, like, you can't speak or you can't open them up, you can't.
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:52I didn't live that, right?
- 14:54Me neither.
- 14:55I'm aware that people have.
- 14:56I'm not disputing that most stereotypes come from a place, right?
- 15:00I get that.
- 15:01But that wasn't my experience.
- 15:02My dad was very open and very calming, and there was no shouting in my house and all these things.
- 15:09So I don't know what disciplining in Germany looks like.
- 15:13They tend to seem very organized and structured, like culturally.
- 15:18And so I'm just wondering when you're parenting with someone that's not Jamaican.
- 15:22It's a challenge.
- 15:23What are some of those challenges?
- 15:26Because the thing is, with our mom, it comes to, it's like just soft love.
- 15:34And everything is no shouting, try to sit down and, you know,
- 15:40gentle parenting.
- 15:41Yeah, exactly.
- 15:43I'm chilled, right?
- 15:46So I won't shout.
- 15:49But, you know, in America, I get the look.
- 15:52I tell people all the time, all I needed was the look.
- 15:56Exactly.
- 15:57I wasn't going anything further.
- 15:59And once the parents do that, you just show up.
- 16:04You know what I mean?
- 16:06So I mean, that's me.
- 16:08That's me.
- 16:09But as I said sometimes, I say, yeah, there's a conflict in terms of when she gives trouble,
- 16:17or she does something that she knows she's not supposed to do.
- 16:20You know, it comes.
- 16:23Put her in and say, what's the matter, and all of that, I mean, I don't want that.
- 16:29And I said, you don't do that, because this, that, that, that, that y'all not sound like a sponge.
- 16:37That's it.
- 16:40You know, and, yeah, so as I said, sometimes there's a bit of a conflict in terms of the whole tool.
- 16:46You know what I mean?
- 16:48It's funny because I think that we don't necessarily consider these details before we
- 16:56choose our partners in general, right?
- 16:58Like we don't think about what I didn't think about, like the cultural difference.
- 17:04Yeah, when it comes to parenting specifically.
- 17:06You know what?
- 17:07I remember when I just got here in Johannesburg, Manneba Linda, she was 70 something
- 17:15at that time, right?
- 17:17And you know, we used to hang out with our, you know, she would say invite us over.
- 17:20And you know, come have some tea, she's from Scotland actually, so you know, I mean,
- 17:24very British.
- 17:25And you know, she said, it has never left me.
- 17:30She said, if you want a life easier, do it somebody within your culture.
- 17:36Really?
- 17:37Yeah.
- 17:38Well, what part did you listen to?
- 17:40The tea wasn't good or the message wasn't like, Linda was speaking wisdom.
- 17:46That's what she said.
- 17:47And I mean, no, I totally get what she meant.
- 17:52Yeah.
- 17:53You know what I mean?
- 17:54Linda, I get what Linda meant too.
- 17:55We both weren't listening to Linda.
- 17:57Not at all.
- 17:59The other thing that also comes to mind as you say that, a Jamaican guy once said to
- 18:03me that you should always date within your financial bracket or above as a woman, right?
- 18:11And at the time, I was just like, oh no, but like you connect with people as more about
- 18:17love is love.
- 18:18You know what?
- 18:21And so I completely like dismissed what he was saying, right?
- 18:24And now looking back, I agree with him too.
- 18:29I wasn't listening to Linda and I wasn't listening to him.
- 18:32Yeah.
- 18:33You know, listen, learn, right?
- 18:35Listen, learn.
- 18:36Oh my gosh.
- 18:40Do you think you'll have more children?
- 18:44Mm.
- 18:45Not sure, you know?
- 18:46Really?
- 18:47Not sure.
- 18:48You know what I mean?
- 18:49The thing is being here with no family member, right?
- 18:57Everything falls on us.
- 18:59Every single thing.
- 19:01You know what I'm saying?
- 19:02Not like we have a auntie or a cousin or a grandma or grandpa where we can, you know,
- 19:07lift the baby with an ungodly do thing.
- 19:09So if she has something to do, then I have to meet myself available to take care of the
- 19:16baby and vice versa.
- 19:18You know what I mean?
- 19:19So it's tough.
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:21It's funny because the last time we went home in particular, so my children have been
- 19:25to Jamaica multiple times from in the womb, out the womb, all the time, right?
- 19:29But the last time, because they're getting older and you kind of see them interacting with
- 19:33their environment more, it becomes a different experience, right?
- 19:37And I took them to my dad's office, recording the podcast.
- 19:40It's the only country that I don't need to get a nanny, right?
- 19:43Because, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 19:44And it's not even a blood family.
- 19:45So you know, you know all this, you know what I mean?
- 19:48Exactly.
- 19:49And it's not that they're my, my, necessarily all my blood relatives at all, but it's
- 19:53family, you know what I mean?
- 19:55And so I dropped my, my daughters to my dad's office and the lady who has been like helping
- 20:02around the office, helping us just do everything, she does everything, you know, big and small.
- 20:08And she has been in my life from I was a child, okay?
- 20:11And now, you know, I say trust everything.
- 20:14Trust that that's a part, the trust, also trust to respect my wishes, right?
- 20:19Because I'm very particular in certain things that I do and not everybody agrees, but everybody
- 20:24who is around my children will respect that this is the April way.
- 20:28And that's all I asked for, right?
- 20:30And seeing her, like seeing Ms. Gloria get mangoes from my children, there is, I can't
- 20:36describe the experience knowing that I've grown up with Ms. Gloria and now watching the
- 20:41same lady.
- 20:42She probably gave you mangoes.
- 20:43Literally.
- 20:44And now, you know, get mangoes, you know, all the mangoes, but I think we...
- 20:47No, no, no.
- 20:48No, no, no.
- 20:49And watching that, it's an experience that I can't even really describe, it is so
- 20:55heartwarming.
- 20:56It's just a full circle, man.
- 20:58Like literally.
- 20:59And you know that like the people that looked after you and now get to look after your children,
- 21:04they do so with an immense sense of pride, right?
- 21:08It's not about jobs, it's not about titles, it's like about this feeling and I do think
- 21:14once I always knew that I wanted to go back home, seeing that play out in their lives
- 21:20was just confirmation that I need them to experience like this level and you talk about
- 21:25confidence.
- 21:26I think, you know, we've been sending a lot of time in Southeast Asia where they really
- 21:30have a positive attitude to children, right?
- 21:33They adore children in a way that is beautiful, but nothing quite hits the same as being
- 21:39in Jamaica.
- 21:41People are the security guard is playing with them, you know, it's just, it's just a crazy
- 21:47experience.
- 21:48You see, man, like tough man, ready.
- 21:50But then in front of them, you know, he goes to the Selenjan version of himself, which
- 21:55I still will never understand by the way.
- 21:57Selenam, Selenam artist, you know, Selen, yo, them black and white party, they're Jamaica,
- 22:04our white party.
- 22:05Oh my gosh.
- 22:06Yeah, man, I'll be a Selen.
- 22:10But it's, it's a really, it's a beautiful thing for your child to be seen in, in every
- 22:17which way, you know, I agree, I agree 100.
- 22:21Were there any times during your experience here that you thought about going back to Jamaica?
- 22:26Yeah.
- 22:27I'll never forget one day I was walking in, this was a green point and I don't even know
- 22:32about the wind here.
- 22:34No.
- 22:35Yeah, sometimes literally the wind was pushing me back, physically I'm fighting, yeah,
- 22:42and it was pushing me back and sometimes some people hold on to things when it gets really
- 22:46windy, right?
- 22:47What I'm going blow it?
- 22:48It will push them back.
- 22:50Yeah, I mean, you can't go on YouTube, I can't say videos, right?
- 22:54Of people.
- 22:55People being blown to the ground, right?
- 22:57And I remember I was walking and I was so upset and fed up for the wind.
- 23:02I'm saying, I'm tired of this shit, I'm tired of this, I, I want to leave.
- 23:09And then you're still here?
- 23:10And then yeah, the wind died on us, you always be with us, you know what I mean, we'll
- 23:14go on, yeah, but that was the one moment I said, man, I can't do this, yeah.
- 23:21What is the best thing and the worst thing about living here?
- 23:24The best thing, I mean, it's the best of both worlds, you can say, it's western, infrastructurwise,
- 23:36it's up there, like always tell people, first world infrastructure, but a bit of third world
- 23:44mentality.
- 23:45Okay.
- 23:46You know what I mean?
- 23:47So a bit of first world and a bit of third world, what we use from Jamaica, streets and
- 23:51all that.
- 23:52So yeah, that's pretty much what it is, you know.
- 23:56And the challenges of living in South Africa or Cape Town specifically?
- 24:01Challenges, as you mentioned, especially Cape Townians, a lot of them are not that friendly.
- 24:08Okay.
- 24:09Yeah.
- 24:10Why did you choose Cape Town over, over Jobarck?
- 24:13Because nature.
- 24:14Okay.
- 24:15Yeah, nature.
- 24:16Because you need it to be.
- 24:17Yeah, by the sea, the mountain, all that.
- 24:18And the thing is there, there's more to do here.
- 24:21In terms of just socially?
- 24:23Just because of nature.
- 24:24Okay.
- 24:25So you can do what you do in Johannesburg, like, you know, the old spot is, but then you
- 24:29get all the extras.
- 24:30Exactly.
- 24:31With here, you can go far.
- 24:32Run on the promenade, you can live your best life.
- 24:35Right.
- 24:36You know what I mean?
- 24:37And what other African countries have you visited?
- 24:41Namibia.
- 24:42Love it.
- 24:43Love it?
- 24:44Yeah.
- 24:45I know nothing.
- 24:46Tell me, what's Namibia like?
- 24:47It's a huge country.
- 24:50So history, it was colonized by Germany, right?
- 24:54Okay.
- 24:55And then after the Second World War, when Germany lost, the UN gave it to South Africa,
- 25:00apartheid, South Africa.
- 25:02So they got independence from apartheid, South Africa, which was 1990.
- 25:07Big country, huge country, two million people.
- 25:11So it's partly populated.
- 25:13Yeah.
- 25:14I thought you were going to come with some big numbers.
- 25:16Some million people, a lot of desert, Kalahari, Kalahari desert.
- 25:22Okay.
- 25:23Jogf is not my strong suit.
- 25:24Yeah.
- 25:25I think that's all this desert in the world.
- 25:28It's there.
- 25:30The country got its name, Namibia from the Namib desert.
- 25:34So, a lot of desert, where the dunes meet the ocean.
- 25:41Okay.
- 25:42Beautiful.
- 25:43And it's very similar to South Africa because it was colonized by South Africa.
- 25:49So, all the stores and all that, very familiar because they're all there.
- 25:54All there.
- 25:55You know what I mean?
- 25:56But if I had to leave South Africa, I could see myself going to Namibia.
- 26:02To live?
- 26:03Yeah.
- 26:04Oh really?
- 26:05I thought you were going to say it was too quiet.
- 26:07I like that.
- 26:08Okay.
- 26:09The oil I've gotten is the more I appreciate that.
- 26:12Yeah.
- 26:13Funny that you say this because I used to always say that I have to live in a city.
- 26:16Right?
- 26:17Like I have to have to have a city like that.
- 26:18I used to think that way as well.
- 26:19And, you know, I've lived in New York, London, don't cities, I get it.
- 26:24And then, more so in the last, like, two years, I'm just like, I don't think I wanted
- 26:31to sit alive.
- 26:32I'm all right.
- 26:33I'm all right.
- 26:34Yeah.
- 26:35Spending so much time, you know, whether it's in Bali or other places and coming back to
- 26:40like a city.
- 26:41So Indonesia has strong drug laws, which is relevant because you don't see people that
- 26:47drugged out on the street, right?
- 26:49Because of the law.
- 26:50So I come off the plane and I said to my sister, I know this might sound silly, but seeing
- 26:55a crackhead and let's be honest, crackheads are universal, right?
- 26:58It doesn't matter where you are in the world, it's a universal appearance.
- 27:02And it was so jarring to me, I was just like, what is going on?
- 27:06You know, seeing the traffic is in Bali, so that doesn't count.
- 27:10Although it's like, yeah, it's island vibes, but the traffic is city.
- 27:14Okay, okay.
- 27:15Even my girls are like, the Bali traffic is terrible.
- 27:18It's terrible.
- 27:19But in terms of even the dirt is different in city, I just find that like countryside dirt
- 27:27feels more organic.
- 27:28Yeah.
- 27:29You know, it just feels more like dirt, dirt rather than like graffiti and like nasty.
- 27:35You feel the difference between dirty and nasty, right?
- 27:39City life is nasty.
- 27:41Even the smells.
- 27:42Oh yeah.
- 27:43Definitely, definitely.
- 27:44And it was so jarring to me because I hadn't been in city life for so long.
- 27:49Even in Paris.
- 27:50Even in Paris.
- 27:51Especially Paris.
- 27:52The city of the world.
- 27:53Especially Paris.
- 27:54The city of the smell.
- 27:55First of all, the city of love is the biggest marketing hoax of the world and I give
- 28:01it credit, by the way.
- 28:02Yeah.
- 28:03Whoever, two things that I think Paris has done particularly well or French have done
- 28:08particularly well at line to us about is Paris being the city of love.
- 28:12And also this idea that French cuisine is like the oat, the crème de la crème, right?
- 28:18Don't get me wrong.
- 28:19The patisserie babes, like we can get down on the desserts, right?
- 28:23Like they can take that crown.
- 28:24But the food, food.
- 28:25Yeah, yeah.
- 28:26It's fine.
- 28:27It's right.
- 28:28Give me, you know, duck allahons, give me, you know, croque monsieur, I'm all for like
- 28:33cheeses.
- 28:34But that's my point and don't get I love butter.
- 28:38So me and the French and I, we can relate.
- 28:41But this whole city of love thing, I'm like when I'm get there, it stinks.
- 28:46Yeah.
- 28:47Yeah.
- 28:48And people, and here's the thing which they've done beautifully with the marketing is
- 28:51that people bring their love.
- 28:54It goes back to like the expectation effect.
- 28:56Because you've been told all your life that this is the city of love, you bring that expectation
- 29:02and our brains will look to confirm our beliefs.
- 29:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 29:06But the minute you like to stop for a second and look around, I mean, there are even some
- 29:11streets in Paris that you're there not to walk down, you just look down at the, not
- 29:16a right?
- 29:17No, what?
- 29:18It's so true.
- 29:21What is South Africa known for?
- 29:22Or Cape Town, what do people expect to receive here that you think is a little bit different
- 29:28to the reality?
- 29:32Like I think wine, and I think that definitely lives up to the expectation.
- 29:36I tell you a secret.
- 29:38Tell me.
- 29:39I tell you something.
- 29:40And people say you've been here 15 years, you should do better.
- 29:44You don't know not what wine.
- 29:46No.
- 29:47You don't drink.
- 29:48Every single.
- 29:49Every single white wine.
- 29:50It is the same to me.
- 29:52So you do drink, you just don't know care for.
- 29:56Yeah.
- 29:57You know, if people, people say, oh, it smells this kind of gray upon that kind and the
- 30:04blend under this.
- 30:05So yeah.
- 30:06What about that?
- 30:07That's alcohol.
- 30:08Yeah.
- 30:09Wine.
- 30:10You know what I mean?
- 30:11That's so funny.
- 30:12Yeah.
- 30:13I remember when I'm a boy, he came here when last year and we went to a wine farm just
- 30:19for, you know, the sights on scene.
- 30:21Not really wine.
- 30:22I don't know it in a really careable wine like that.
- 30:24And we had a table and, you know, the wine, you know, for tastes and try and them things
- 30:32and my boy had a Red Bull on the wine just because I'm puppet on just.
- 30:37No, he did not.
- 30:39He put Red Bull in the wine.
- 30:41And everybody I look on him like, what?
- 30:44I'm just drinking.
- 30:46I'm not here.
- 30:48I'm not sure the same sentiment.
- 30:50I would have died.
- 30:51You know, but the thing is, built on.
- 30:53I've been trying this out.
- 30:54I love built on.
- 30:55Exactly.
- 30:56What Americans call beef jerky.
- 30:58Is that what they call beef jerky?
- 30:59I didn't even know.
- 31:00I've never had beef jerky.
- 31:01Yeah.
- 31:02I think America, it kind of more chemical on the chemical side and maybe that's why
- 31:07I'm not trying it.
- 31:08Maybe that's why I'm not trying it.
- 31:09We're here.
- 31:10It's raw meat that they put to dry.
- 31:12Yes.
- 31:13You know what I mean?
- 31:14I really love built on.
- 31:15Yeah, it's nice.
- 31:17But the first time I came here, people were giving built on to me and I'm saying, no,
- 31:23just the idea of the meat I didn't cook, yeah, I was like, no, it took me a while to get
- 31:30over that to start eating it.
- 31:31How are you with sushi?
- 31:34The first time I tried sushi was here.
- 31:38Really?
- 31:39Yeah, yeah, a lot of sushi places here.
- 31:41And same thing, just the idea, I went home and put it in some oil and chewed the sushi
- 31:55in it.
- 31:56No, you did not.
- 31:57Yeah.
- 31:58Oh my gosh.
- 31:59That's what I did.
- 32:00But no, no, I'm alright with it.
- 32:02You're okay.
- 32:03Yeah, I've got a restaurant that I love sushi I eat it, but it's about fish because
- 32:07I went to the supermarket in Salambosh and there was so much meat, right?
- 32:14So I saw, like, meat everywhere and then I saw a fish counter and it had one type of fish
- 32:19on it.
- 32:20So I thought that it was a promotion.
- 32:21You know when people are pushing like one product, so I go to the lady who works at
- 32:24the supermarket and I'm like, so sorry to bother you.
- 32:26Could you tell me where the fish is, like, where the fish section?
- 32:29That's what she said.
- 32:30This one, this one table, I don't even know what a fish was.
- 32:35I was so confused that I didn't even buy the fish in the end because I was like, what?
- 32:39There's only one fish.
- 32:40She said, yes.
- 32:41And so I said to people, do people not eat fish here and people are saying to me at
- 32:46restaurants, they're more likely to order it, but they're not likely to buy it at the
- 32:50supermarket and cook at home.
- 32:52Yeah.
- 32:53And I eat everything, right?
- 32:54So it's not that I'm anti-meat, but certain countries make me cognizant of meat and
- 33:01South Africa is one of those places.
- 33:03South Africa is a love meat, man.
- 33:05South Africa is a love meat, there's meat, everything.
- 33:08But even like the veg area in this particular supermarket was disproportionate to the meat.
- 33:14It's probably because it's still in Bosch, man, because it become this side, you have
- 33:21different kind of fish, you have octopus, you have squid, everything, what you want.
- 33:25So it's just out there.
- 33:26Yeah, it's probably still in Bosch, honestly, it's probably inland, kind of, as Mr.
- 33:31Bosch.
- 33:33I was shocked how much meat there was.
- 33:36Yeah, they love the meat, man.
- 33:38I mean, you can't be vegan here.
- 33:40Even antelope.
- 33:41Okay, I haven't had antelope, have you had antelope?
- 33:44Yeah, spring bark.
- 33:47Would you stop my can get either because it's their national way, call it animal.
- 33:52Animal.
- 33:53The rugby team is called it spring bark, but it's still eating it.
- 33:56Respect animal.
- 33:58It's still eating it, but I've tried Kudo, which is, I think that's the second biggest
- 34:05antelope.
- 34:06Huge, beautiful animal.
- 34:08It's stunning.
- 34:09Yeah, I've never eaten it.
- 34:10Elon.
- 34:11Elon, which is the biggest antelope, huge, massive, muscle, it just tastes beefy, it tastes
- 34:18very wild.
- 34:19Which is yummy.
- 34:20It is wild.
- 34:21It's like, it's a game.
- 34:22It's yummy.
- 34:23So it tastes.
- 34:24Is there anything you wouldn't try?
- 34:27I've been offered when I was in Botswana, I was offered snake.
- 34:32And you didn't try it?
- 34:33No, I'm so bred up.
- 34:36We are right, you can't try that.
- 34:39Give me chicken.
- 34:40Do you know what I mean?
- 34:41So like, reptile is born, I'm gonna know.
- 34:43I've had alligator in Miami.
- 34:47Oh, it is.
- 34:48I really enjoyed it.
- 34:49So I'm imagining like fishy are chicken.
- 34:55So the texture was seafoody, from a textual perspective.
- 35:00From a taste perspective, I wouldn't say chickeny, right?
- 35:05But then it's like, people say that frogs taste like chicken.
- 35:07I don't think it tastes like chicken.
- 35:11I think people just say everything tastes like chicken because they don't have the words
- 35:14to describe what it actually tastes like.
- 35:16That's what I want to say.
- 35:17Yeah, I think alligator is leaning more textually to like, longastine, kind of big shrimpy
- 35:24texture, vibe.
- 35:27I feel like I would try more things.
- 35:29I've tried ostrich.
- 35:30Okay, yes, I've had ostrich, yeah.
- 35:32And it's red meat.
- 35:33A lot of people don't even know that.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:35It's red meat.
- 35:36Yeah, I think the only thing I couldn't try is like some kind of bush right business.
- 35:43That just doesn't appear to me.
- 35:44That's something.
- 35:45Yeah, I don't think I could do it.
- 35:47Which country of them think they can bush right or they can eat it?
- 35:50So I think in Nigeria.
- 35:51In Africa, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:52Because my dad was in Nigeria and wasn't.
- 35:54And I think also if it looks ratty, like if it looks like like a rodent, yeah, I don't
- 36:00think.
- 36:01And it's no disrespect.
- 36:02Because mentally you think of rats not being clean.
- 36:05I have a genuine phobia of rats, genuine phobia.
- 36:09Like there was one on my leg once.
- 36:11And since then I had fallen in a sleep and I woke up and the thing was on my leg.
- 36:15And since then it's just game over for me.
- 36:17Like even if it's in a movie, I can't watch, you have to tell me, it's safe to open up
- 36:21your eyes.
- 36:22There's a watch in India turquoise with splint on it.
- 36:24No, no, no.
- 36:25I'm not doing anything that is even like animated rat is just not or most is not for me.
- 36:31So I don't think I could eat that.
- 36:33But we were in Cambodia recently and we ate tarantulas, I thoroughly enjoyed them.
- 36:38They were spicy.
- 36:39Big ones?
- 36:40Yeah, massive.
- 36:41Really?
- 36:42Yes, spicy crunchy.
- 36:43And like, I mean good protein.
- 36:45Right.
- 36:46My kids are all about the texture.
- 36:47So they love that.
- 36:49We had crickets.
- 36:50They call them coconut crickets because they're just massive.
- 36:53What's the name of it?
- 36:56I can't remember the name.
- 36:57What are the worms that they eat here?
- 36:59They eat worms here?
- 37:00I don't know what are worms.
- 37:01What?
- 37:02Look, in Africa here, yeah, like I can't remember the name, what's someone on the worms,
- 37:08right?
- 37:09Yeah, they eat that.
- 37:10They eat that.
- 37:11I think Modata tried it.
- 37:12So what does it look like?
- 37:13It looks sloggy?
- 37:14It looks, yeah, black.
- 37:16And then, yeah, I've...
- 37:19You've not tried it.
- 37:20No, I haven't.
- 37:21You wouldn't try it.
- 37:22No.
- 37:23Why?
- 37:24Why?
- 37:25You know what?
- 37:26When I go to a restaurant, I don't know.
- 37:28Right?
- 37:29Or food that I'm not used to.
- 37:31I play it safe.
- 37:33Give me burger.
- 37:35Or give me pizza.
- 37:38What happens when you go to a restaurant that doesn't have a burger or pizza?
- 37:43You just have chicken.
- 37:44Yeah.
- 37:45Yeah.
- 37:46Your Jamaican.
- 37:48Yeah, that...
- 37:49I mean, chicken...
- 37:50Yo, listen.
- 37:51Girl, punch chicken.
- 37:52Chicken.
- 37:53I'd go to, man.
- 37:54You're definitely Jamaican.
- 37:55Yeah.
- 37:56I might have doubted it with your timing because you're so early.
- 37:59But no, I don't know what it is about Jamaicans.
- 38:03Just don't like to try people food.
- 38:05Yeah.
- 38:06You know what?
- 38:08And I love trying people.
- 38:09So I'm not black with my hair and I'm not Jamaican with my palate.
- 38:12But, yeah.
- 38:13And everything else.
- 38:14For me, like...
- 38:15All right.
- 38:16I've been tried pop.
- 38:18Somebody was telling me it's the...
- 38:20Yeah, the me is me.
- 38:21I love that.
- 38:22I've not had it.
- 38:23Kind of look like mashed potatoes.
- 38:25Okay.
- 38:26Right?
- 38:27First time I tried that.
- 38:29So, basically, I need to eat with your hands, right?
- 38:32Right.
- 38:33So you take it, you dip it in gravy.
- 38:35Yep.
- 38:36And then you eat.
- 38:37Right.
- 38:38And the first time I tried it, I'm like...
- 38:40All right.
- 38:41Thank you.
- 38:43You don't like it?
- 38:44I don't say no.
- 38:45Because the thing is, by the time it goes into your mouth...
- 38:48Right.
- 38:49The gravy gone.
- 38:50The taste...
- 38:51You already swallow that.
- 38:53And then it's just this bland texture anymore with no taste, right?
- 38:59Right.
- 39:00And people only say, oh, it depends on who makes it for you.
- 39:03That I understand that.
- 39:04Okay.
- 39:05And you don't have given it another try.
- 39:07So you have tried a few other tries.
- 39:09But it's still the same.
- 39:10I'm sorry.
- 39:11Yeah, I'm all right.
- 39:13Yo, it's a staple here.
- 39:15And people love it.
- 39:16And I get it.
- 39:18It's cheap as well.
- 39:19Okay.
- 39:20It's cheap because it's just me as me.
- 39:22You can make any, just put whatever in it.
- 39:24You mix it until it turns creamy or whatever.
- 39:26Right.
- 39:27It's not for you.
- 39:28Yeah.
- 39:29No.
- 39:30I mean, I was a vegetarian.
- 39:31Oh, really?
- 39:32Yeah, yeah.
- 39:33And that's when I discovered you can eat quinoa.
- 39:39You have a thing called mallet.
- 39:41Yeah.
- 39:42You have so many greens.
- 39:43I cooked quinoa for my girls today.
- 39:44Oh, really?
- 39:45Yeah.
- 39:46Yeah, yeah.
- 39:47You have so many greens.
- 39:48I don't eat rice.
- 39:49So I like to.
- 39:50Why?
- 39:51So I did some work with pulse ones.
- 39:55Mm-hmm.
- 39:56And I was at 14 and I was on a cracker's and water diet.
- 40:00Right?
- 40:01Which I'm sure you can understand.
- 40:03Mm-hmm.
- 40:04And after that, I just never went back to the rice.
- 40:07I never loved rice before.
- 40:09And I think having the time away from the rice
- 40:12I was like, cool, I'm not going to waste calories on rice.
- 40:16But if you're cooking and you cook rice and peas,
- 40:19I love the smell of the coconut milk.
- 40:21Okay.
- 40:22I just love it.
- 40:23And if you're cooking, I'll eat it.
- 40:24Right?
- 40:25Going to Southeast Asia.
- 40:26I'm not.
- 40:27And again, you cannot be out in those streets and not eat rice.
- 40:30Rice comes with every meal.
- 40:32Yeah.
- 40:33And I will do my best.
- 40:34Yeah, man.
- 40:35I'll do my best to explain to people.
- 40:36I just want veg.
- 40:37But there are times where you just like, Lord God,
- 40:39let me just need them to rise up because it's there.
- 40:41So, but rice is not, I think.
- 40:42So I do love like other grains.
- 40:44Yeah.
- 40:45But I'm interested how it is being vegetarian here.
- 40:47Because they love meat so much.
- 40:48I mean, all right.
- 40:50So like, keep tone.
- 40:52Yeah, vegan restaurants.
- 40:54Oh, yeah.
- 40:55So you can survive.
- 40:56Or you have vegan menu.
- 40:57Okay.
- 40:58And all of that.
- 40:59So you can survive here.
- 41:00Right.
- 41:01You know, I mean.
- 41:02Why did you stop?
- 41:03Yeah.
- 41:04Serbia.
- 41:05Serbian, I believe.
- 41:06You know, in a vegetable.
- 41:07No, not that.
- 41:08What?
- 41:09Serbia.
- 41:10Yo.
- 41:11Because, because, um, she's half Serbian.
- 41:14Okay.
- 41:15So we got to Serbia a few times.
- 41:18And, you know, I mean, like, Serbia, you're going to a superma,
- 41:22as you talk about selling rice.
- 41:23Right.
- 41:24I know limited the vegetables were and all of that in the supermarket.
- 41:27It was even more.
- 41:29In Serbia.
- 41:30I'm a, because
- 41:56And um, I want my boys and we'll go this restaurant and think I'm on a chicken and because it's our meat.
- 42:03Right.
- 42:04Africa.
- 42:04I mean, I know about something like Africa would have just meat, straight, right?
- 42:07Um, I got, I'm a teller girl, I don't eat meat so I'm gonna ask her what I'm gonna eat.
- 42:13What's available?
- 42:14And the girl who put me like my alien, she said what?
- 42:16You don't why?
- 42:17And you know what my other?
- 42:19Fries?
- 42:20Ambient bean.
- 42:21Literally.
- 42:22Literally.
- 42:23Literally.
- 42:24Fries?
- 42:25Ambient bean.
- 42:26That's not that meat.
- 42:27Because that, that's all I had that never involved meat.
- 42:31Wow.
- 42:32Yeah.
- 42:33And you sure I said the beans never have like a, like a meat in, in the oil.
- 42:37No man.
- 42:38We get it from the can.
- 42:39Okay.
- 42:40Fresh.
- 42:41Fresh.
- 42:42It's like when people come to Jamaica and them have um, soupies.
- 42:46Yeah.
- 42:47And they expect it to just be peas, right?
- 42:50Uh-huh.
- 42:51It could be teal.
- 42:52Literally.
- 42:53I've seen so many people have this experience that they think they're ordering a vegetarian
- 42:58dish.
- 42:59Dish.
- 43:00Yeah.
- 43:01And they are mortified.
- 43:02I mean, yeah.
- 43:03No, no.
- 43:04I've learned to quote that as well.
- 43:06Okay.
- 43:07Here.
- 43:08Um.
- 43:09I know.
- 43:10Cook rice a lot.
- 43:11Yeah.
- 43:12I love rice, man.
- 43:13I'll eat rice every day.
- 43:14I have a friend as long as the gravy is good.
- 43:16Yeah.
- 43:17You know I'm just rice and gravy.
- 43:18Wow.
- 43:19Mudata.
- 43:20Papa.
- 43:21Yeah.
- 43:22That's why I feel about chicken foot soup.
- 43:23Oh really?
- 43:24I can't eat it anymore.
- 43:25Um, chicken foot.
- 43:26You've never had chicken foot soup.
- 43:27So my health is always make chicken foot soup.
- 43:28And I used to love it when I was younger.
- 43:29Yeah.
- 43:30And I think I ate it so much.
- 43:31It now looks like baby's hands.
- 43:32I even browns to um, chicken foot.
- 43:33I love them.
- 43:34I'll never add it.
- 43:35Really?
- 43:36Never.
- 43:37Uh-huh.
- 43:38You don't eat.
- 43:39You eat pig's tail or them?
- 43:40You don't.
- 43:41Yeah.
- 43:42I mean, eat them.
- 43:43But like, even.
- 43:44Yeah.
- 43:45Yeah.
- 43:46Yeah.
- 43:47Yeah.
- 43:48I think they have liver.
- 43:49You don't eat liver?
- 43:50Yo.
- 43:51Me.
- 43:52He had liver.
- 43:53Really?
- 43:54Because I think you would.
- 43:55We used to get that every day for every part.
- 43:57Okay.
- 43:58Every day.
- 43:59I love liver.
- 44:00It's unparage.
- 44:01Music gets it every day.
- 44:02The moment when I became old enough to say no.
- 44:05No.
- 44:06I eat that.
- 44:07When I look back upon that.
- 44:08And it's funny, right?
- 44:09Like, I cook.
- 44:10And I'd like to.
- 44:11Yeah.
- 44:12Yeah.
- 44:13Yeah.
- 44:14Yeah.
- 44:15Yeah.
- 44:16Yeah.
- 44:17Like, I cook.
- 44:18And I'd like to think that I've had a career in this industry as a chef and restaurateur.
- 44:22So I'd like to think that my food is good.
- 44:25But I can't make liver like whole, like proper.
- 44:29Like the beef, beef liver.
- 44:31Yeah.
- 44:32Yeah.
- 44:33It's just, it's just never.
- 44:34I smell it.
- 44:35I smell it.
- 44:36I can eat it all day.
- 44:38And when I go home now, when I was younger, you couldn't get me to eat liver.
- 44:42But you couldn't get me to eat lots of, like, food when I was younger.
- 44:45I never, like, I can't selfish.
- 44:46Really?
- 44:47Never.
- 44:48Are you sure you had your American?
- 44:49No.
- 44:50I love I can't selfish.
- 44:51But the texture.
- 44:52Oh, the akit.
- 44:53Yeah, man.
- 44:54Yeah.
- 44:55Yeah.
- 44:56In I never like it.
- 44:57I never used to eat oxal.
- 44:58Never.
- 44:59You know what?
- 45:00It was too gelatinous.
- 45:01I'm not a fan of oxal.
- 45:02Oh, no.
- 45:03No.
- 45:04No.
- 45:05I'm still not a fan.
- 45:06The gravy.
- 45:07Okay.
- 45:08The gravy.
- 45:09But you don't want to meet.
- 45:10When we go, when we go, like, I'll let them rest around them, cook shop, then.
- 45:13Yeah.
- 45:14On fried chicken.
- 45:15Yeah.
- 45:16On rice on peas.
- 45:17Oh, oxal.
- 45:18A gravy.
- 45:19This.
- 45:20It's like the last time it's home, I go to this place and then have the board with everything
- 45:22that they have for the day.
- 45:23And I could not for the life of me choose between curry goat and oxal.
- 45:27I just couldn't.
- 45:28I was like.
- 45:29I didn't agree with it.
- 45:30No, just.
- 45:31I wanted it.
- 45:32I just said, lady, what I should have.
- 45:33I should have curry goat.
- 45:34I should have oxal.
- 45:35And she starts, man.
- 45:36She said, you can have both, you know.
- 45:38I said, what?
- 45:39I was like, really?
- 45:40She said, yeah, man.
- 45:41And you have made my day like not to have to choose.
- 45:45Yeah.
- 45:46Yeah.
- 45:47I mean, me.
- 45:48I still talk born in one.
- 45:50Really?
- 45:51Not a lot of meat, man.
- 45:52Yeah, but you suck the born.
- 45:54I'm not good at sucking.
- 45:55Oh, and really?
- 45:56Is that just oxal or is that just in general?
- 45:59Yeah, I mean, no, no.
- 46:03It's just something more oxal.
- 46:05We're not like one.
- 46:07Oh, man.
- 46:08But we have some version when, when them eat oxal.
- 46:11When them don't, you don't know, oxal and eat enough.
- 46:14Born mashup, everything mashup.
- 46:16Everything.
- 46:17Yeah.
- 46:18Don't you make on food, man?
- 46:19Yeah.
- 46:20And that's, that's the one thing I miss here, man.
- 46:23Because you don't even have the ingredients.
- 46:25Yeah.
- 46:26My girls were asking for plantin because normally they're breakfasts,
- 46:29like scrambled eggs, plantin, pear.
- 46:31Plantin, you can't, you can't, you can't get here.
- 46:33I couldn't find it.
- 46:34No, you're not going to know my supermarket.
- 46:36Okay.
- 46:37Yeah, like the West African, the Nigerians, and all of that.
- 46:40You can go find it.
- 46:41That's a little store, our little shop, where you can go.
- 46:43But sometimes you have a drive.
- 46:45Yeah.
- 46:46You know, half an hour, four out of five minutes.
- 46:48So just go find it.
- 46:49You know what I mean?
- 46:50And then, you know, because it comes from that side.
- 46:53Right.
- 46:54You have to be a premium.
- 46:55Right.
- 46:56You know what I mean?
- 46:57Like, sometimes we look at it, like, even yum.
- 47:00I'm not eating yum in years.
- 47:02You know what I'm saying?
- 47:03But sometimes I go, I want to look at the yum.
- 47:05And that's it.
- 47:06It's worth it though.
- 47:07Right.
- 47:08You know what I mean?
- 47:09For the price of the matcha, I was trying to know the matcha.
- 47:10Yes.
- 47:11I'm going to send it.
- 47:12Oh, it's all right.
- 47:13That's one of the things I love about Bali.
- 47:16All of their ingredients are hours.
- 47:19It's for the ingredients.
- 47:20It's for the ingredients.
- 47:21It's for the shop.
- 47:22Yeah, but I never expected it.
- 47:23It's for the shop.
- 47:24But not only is it hours, it tastes like food pumpkin.
- 47:28So like, you know, you can get pumpkin in lots of places.
- 47:31But it doesn't taste like it came from the soil of Jamaica.
- 47:35The pumpkin in Bali has the same sweetness, like that natural, rich flavor as always.
- 47:41And they don't...
- 47:42I don't know how they use planting.
- 47:43And I've been asking people because...
- 47:45In Bali.
- 47:46Yeah, because a lot of people are buying it green.
- 47:48And so I'm like, okay, cool.
- 47:49And so when it's yellow, I just get it super cheap.
- 47:52Because I think for them, it's a waste product.
- 47:54Right.
- 47:55It's done.
- 47:56Whereas for me, that's like, probably I love planting.
- 47:58Even in the year or so.
- 47:59Like...
- 48:00Really?
- 48:01Green planting.
- 48:02They don't.
- 48:03Oh, okay.
- 48:04They don't eat.
- 48:05They don't eat.
- 48:06That's like, no.
- 48:07Okay.
- 48:08And I mean, yes, it's good.
- 48:09But yeah, they only sell it when it's yellow in the shop.
- 48:19Yeah.
- 48:20Wow.
- 48:21Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about...
- 48:25Like, what is South African food?
- 48:28Because yes, I get the bribe, I get the barbecue.
- 48:31I recently learned about Cape Malay.
- 48:33Yeah, that's the color side.
- 48:35Yes.
- 48:36African Malaysian.
- 48:38Yeah, yeah.
- 48:39And I found it super interesting, super flavorful.
- 48:42For people that don't know, like food here.
- 48:44Again, because like you said, there are so many restaurants.
- 48:46You can kind of eat any cuisine here.
- 48:48Yeah, from all over the world.
- 48:49Yeah.
- 48:50How would you describe South African food?
- 48:53Yeah, I've heard that.
- 48:54Shaka Laka.
- 48:55I've heard, but I've never had it.
- 48:57Yeah, it's like a mixture of sauce and vegetable and all of that.
- 49:02It's good?
- 49:03Yeah, yeah, it's dope.
- 49:04And spicy.
- 49:05Spicy.
- 49:06As it's a built-in bonicio.
- 49:09I've heard of bonicio.
- 49:11That's the Korean bread.
- 49:12In the bread, yeah.
- 49:13Yeah, but I haven't had it either.
- 49:15I feel like I need to eat these things before I leave.
- 49:17Yeah, you need to try.
- 49:18Because when you eat a bonicio there, you have to sleep.
- 49:23Really?
- 49:24Yeah.
- 49:25Real food.
- 49:26I mean, the bread, it absorbs all the gravy and the meat and all of that.
- 49:33Are there places in Cape Town that you can recommend?
- 49:36Yeah.
- 49:37Okay, so I can get my figs.
- 49:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:39We all have a few days.
- 49:40So we have to start stowed.
- 49:41Yeah, mine.
- 49:42As in the bonicio.
- 49:43Yeah.
- 49:44Yeah, mine.
- 49:45Book up.
- 49:46Book up is where the colorful hoses are.
- 49:49Okay.
- 49:50So that's where I need to live.
- 49:51The Muslim community.
- 49:52Okay.
- 49:53Okay, I'm going to make it happen.
- 49:54I've no, I've not had any of that.
- 49:56I've had, what's the sausage with them all thought about?
- 50:00Boravos?
- 50:01Yes.
- 50:02Boravos.
- 50:03I don't really like them.
- 50:04Yeah, I mean, it's something big here, but it's okay.
- 50:07I mean, if you go to Germany and you try the votes.
- 50:10You know, I mean the curve votes or whatever.
- 50:12Then you say, yeah, this is sausage.
- 50:14This is sausage.
- 50:15I always struggle with that word.
- 50:17Sushis.
- 50:18Sushis.
- 50:19You want the pork.
- 50:20And everything is how much sushis you want.
- 50:23Sushis.
- 50:24Oh, man.
- 50:25Yeah.
- 50:26No, the food.
- 50:27The food, I think, is cool from a quality perspective.
- 50:31Like when you buy ingredients here, it's really nice.
- 50:33You're right.
- 50:34The ingredients feel good.
- 50:35People always come here and say the food is fresh.
- 50:37Yeah.
- 50:38They like it.
- 50:39You know what I mean?
- 50:40It's just true.
- 50:41It's true.
- 50:42And I pride myself on that.
- 50:43But, you know, sometimes like the service.
- 50:49You've just reminded me.
- 50:50I have a review to go on right.
- 50:52I don't write reviews, right?
- 50:53Again.
- 50:54Being in the restaurant industry, I feel bad to write a review.
- 50:57It has to be really bad for me to write something.
- 51:00And most times, I'll be like, oh, I'm going to write a review.
- 51:03And then you sleep on it.
- 51:04And I'm like, I'm not going to become a keyboard warrior.
- 51:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:07Like, whatever.
- 51:08But you've just reminded me that actually, I do want to hold on.
- 51:10Trust me, right?
- 51:11Because the thing is, like, sometimes you'll go to a restaurant and then it will be you and another table.
- 51:18And you add a food and it takes like five to five minutes.
- 51:21Right.
- 51:22I catch you go catch me.
- 51:24Like you go catch the animal, the corn, slaughter, it and do all that.
- 51:28Because I mean, it's just two tables.
- 51:31Right.
- 51:32You know?
- 51:33Yeah.
- 51:34And then.
- 51:35But also just a lack of warmth.
- 51:36And then what I found really strange, so we get the bill.
- 51:39And the girls always go and ask for the bill.
- 51:40That's their thing.
- 51:41And they pay.
- 51:42Yeah.
- 51:43And the lady comes to the table and she says, how much are you paying?
- 51:46And I was confused.
- 51:47Because I had a lot.
- 51:48Like, I showed you a tip.
- 51:49Yeah.
- 51:50But I didn't understand.
- 51:51Because I'm used to, first of all, I'm used to service being in there.
- 51:55Yeah.
- 51:56The gratuity.
- 51:57Yes.
- 51:58And I'll pay whatever.
- 51:59And then it was just the way that she demanded this.
- 52:01But you had made zero effort.
- 52:03I agree.
- 52:04To be hospitable.
- 52:05Customer service.
- 52:06Like this.
- 52:07Like this.
- 52:08Don't exist here and keep down.
- 52:09But also what I find funny, right?
- 52:11So Jamaican obviously we know poor customer service.
- 52:14But our poor customer service feels very deliberate.
- 52:17You know what I'm saying?
- 52:18Like if someone is rude to us, then want to be rude, right?
- 52:22Like it's rude with an extreme, I tell people all the time, Jamaicans are extreme.
- 52:27Yeah.
- 52:28We are either warm or cold.
- 52:29There's no middle.
- 52:30That's it.
- 52:31Yeah.
- 52:32So when the people are rude, it is so rude that you're like, cool.
- 52:35It was supposed to be this way.
- 52:37Yeah.
- 52:38Whereas the rudeness here that I find is just indifferent.
- 52:41They don't know.
- 52:42You know what I mean?
- 52:43They don't.
- 52:44I remember one time we went to KFC.
- 52:47Me and one of my boys, right?
- 52:49And yeah, that's whatever I wanted to add up.
- 52:52And I said to him, Oscar for repeated.
- 52:55Okay.
- 52:56I sure repeated.
- 52:57I know what I said.
- 52:59Good.
- 53:00When the food comes.
- 53:01It wasn't there.
- 53:02Of course there's a wrong menu.
- 53:03It's a wrong, Adam.
- 53:05Yo.
- 53:06And then the thing is, yeah, I asked her for pasta straw.
- 53:10It's like a big iron.
- 53:12For pasta straw.
- 53:13Make up fees.
- 53:14All of that.
- 53:15You know what I'm saying?
- 53:16But I mean, you should have given us a shot from the get-go.
- 53:19Right.
- 53:20You know, whenever they ask, the fact that we ask, there's a lot.
- 53:23Sure.
- 53:24Yeah.
- 53:25Because even the sister came here a few years ago and she picked it up immediately.
- 53:30She just said the lack of customer service.
- 53:32She came for a conference here.
- 53:34Okay.
- 53:35And then we're talking about, you know, all of that.
- 53:37And yeah, she said.
- 53:40And that hierarchy is aware that that's a problem.
- 53:46Okay.
- 53:47But still nothing has been done.
- 53:49Nothing has been done because I guess it will cost the train.
- 53:53Okay.
- 53:54And they're not seeing where the benefits would come.
- 53:57Exactly.
- 53:58And the thing is, a lot of people just ignore it and just go.
- 54:02And until they stop going to certain places.
- 54:06Right.
- 54:07Because it's so bad.
- 54:08Then they won't do anything about it.
- 54:11You know what I mean?
- 54:12Which is sad.
- 54:13Because come on, man.
- 54:14You can't make somebody go to your store and feel uncomfortable.
- 54:17You know what I mean?
- 54:18Yeah.
- 54:19What is the perception of Jamaicans here?
- 54:21Like, is there a strong, because I say this, if you had, and I had had this conversation
- 54:26a year ago, I would presume that everywhere knows Jamaica, right?
- 54:30But in Southeast Asia.
- 54:31A lot of them.
- 54:32But I'm like, I know.
- 54:34I'm sorry.
- 54:35It's Jamaica.
- 54:36I don't have a two accent.
- 54:37I'm like, Bob Marley.
- 54:38Them say no.
- 54:39A man, a man, a man.
- 54:40I said, regular music.
- 54:42He's like, no, no, I don't.
- 54:44So I played.
- 54:45I was determined.
- 54:46Yeah.
- 54:47I was like, you are going.
- 54:48You have a no of a contract, right?
- 54:49Yeah.
- 54:50So I'm starting to play like one love.
- 54:52The man, a man, same.
- 54:53Don't know young people music.
- 54:55I said, I said, what?
- 54:58Young people.
- 54:59I said, three little birds.
- 55:00I played three little birds.
- 55:01I'm saying, no, no, no.
- 55:02Everything wants to know.
- 55:03But here, they seem to have an awareness for regular, obviously.
- 55:07I met a lady yesterday.
- 55:09She was very excited.
- 55:10She goes, you're the first Jamaican that I've met in real life.
- 55:13Oh, really?
- 55:14Yeah.
- 55:15I get that a lot.
- 55:16She's like, I've seen Jamaicans online.
- 55:18I've seen things on that.
- 55:19But I've never met one in person.
- 55:21I get that a lot.
- 55:22And she was super excited.
- 55:23Yeah.
- 55:24No, I mean, even, yo, we got Bosnia.
- 55:27We got Bosnia.
- 55:29I meet this guy.
- 55:30Someone comes from Jamaica.
- 55:32And I'm like, what?
- 55:33Molly.
- 55:34I understand.
- 55:35I'm so one love area.
- 55:36Yeah.
- 55:37Even Bosnia, I don't know.
- 55:39You know what?
- 55:40Asia, Mekanda, Sanbo here.
- 55:44The perception of Jamaican men are women.
- 55:48Oh, give me both.
- 55:49All right.
- 55:51The women.
- 55:53They're beautiful.
- 55:54They're curvy.
- 55:55They have rhythm.
- 55:56They know for move.
- 55:57And all of that.
- 55:59Jamaican men.
- 56:01Una dog.
- 56:02Really?
- 56:03Yeah.
- 56:04For some reason.
- 56:05Oh, no.
- 56:06We are players.
- 56:08Really?
- 56:09Yeah.
- 56:10More so than other cultures or just men in general.
- 56:13Or Jamaican men.
- 56:14Jamaican men.
- 56:15Okay.
- 56:16It hurts.
- 56:17It hurts.
- 56:18Yo, listen.
- 56:20So is there truth to that?
- 56:21Do you think?
- 56:22The first few years I got here.
- 56:27That stigma was attached to me.
- 56:29Okay.
- 56:30You see that one?
- 56:31That Jamaican model?
- 56:33Avoid him.
- 56:34Really?
- 56:35Yeah.
- 56:36He likes.
- 56:37You're just a womanizer.
- 56:38He likes women.
- 56:40You understand?
- 56:41That's what they said.
- 56:42So is it true?
- 56:43But there was no proof.
- 56:44But is it true?
- 56:45There was no proof.
- 56:46But is it true?
- 56:48So today is a beautiful day, right?
- 56:54Oh, my gosh.
- 56:57Yeah.
- 56:58And as I said, they know a lot about the music, right?
- 57:04Bob Mali, the whole work, because during apartheid,
- 57:07reggae music was used to help.
- 57:09Funnily, reggae music was banned here.
- 57:13What's it?
- 57:14During apartheid.
- 57:15Because they didn't want the information.
- 57:16Because of the liberation music.
- 57:17Right.
- 57:18The message, you understand?
- 57:19Yes.
- 57:20So whenever the music came,
- 57:22they will, like, the apartheid government
- 57:24would slash the records, the vinyl, the apartheid files,
- 57:27slash it.
- 57:28So it keeps, so I can't really hear.
- 57:30You know what I mean?
- 57:31Yeah.
- 57:32What does that mean?
- 57:33Wow.
- 57:34And the thing is, a lot of people here think
- 57:38Jamaica is in Africa.
- 57:39Do they?
- 57:40Yeah.
- 57:41I've noticed that.
- 57:42I always ask whenever they say,
- 57:45oh, you're in Jamaica and I'm saying, yeah.
- 57:47And I say, do you know where it is?
- 57:49Okay.
- 57:50So even in South Africa, they think that Jamaica is
- 57:53a neighbor.
- 57:54Yeah.
- 57:55Wow.
- 57:56Yeah.
- 57:57And because it makes sense, because we're very, very pro-black, pro-African,
- 58:02raster movements.
- 58:03Yes.
- 58:04And all of that.
- 58:05We're always talking about African in my dreams.
- 58:07So it must be a question.
- 58:08And all of that.
- 58:09Yeah.
- 58:10And I'm saying, no, we, half way across the world, you know what I mean?
- 58:13What is the perception of reggae music?
- 58:15No.
- 58:16Are there any remnants of the days when it was banned?
- 58:18Are there some people that still...
- 58:20No.
- 58:21No.
- 58:22And the youths here is straight hip-hop.
- 58:26Okay.
- 58:27Straight hip-hop.
- 58:28Yeah.
- 58:29They're not feeling reggae.
- 58:30Straight hip-hop.
- 58:31Like modern hip-hop, like...
- 58:34Yeah, hip-hop.
- 58:35Just hip-hop in general.
- 58:36Oh.
- 58:37I mean Zimbabwe.
- 58:38If you go Zimbabwe.
- 58:39Are you a meet-up Zimbabwe?
- 58:40Yes.
- 58:41A person from Zimbabwe here.
- 58:43Tell them to come from the Caribbean.
- 58:46Okay.
- 58:47Tell them to come from Jamaica.
- 58:49Because if you're telling me to come from Jamaica.
- 58:51Yeah, they're there for hours.
- 58:53Because they absolutely love Jamaica and love the culture and love everything about us.
- 58:59Okay.
- 59:00And when I went there, aside, I went to this party in Harari.
- 59:08You couldn't tell me another Jamaica that.
- 59:10Really?
- 59:11Yeah.
- 59:12The dancing.
- 59:13They play a lot of, like, 90s dance.
- 59:17Okay.
- 59:18And early 2000s.
- 59:19Yeah.
- 59:20Yeah.
- 59:21And the mind of my dance and even part of the mind of luck.
- 59:24Even part of it.
- 59:27That's crazy.
- 59:28Yeah, it's crazy.
- 59:29And this is the thing that people don't understand when I say that Jamaica is the best island in the world.
- 59:33Yeah.
- 59:34Because how are you going to be in Zimbabwe and seeing this influence of our culture?
- 59:39I mean, it's crazy because outside of America, black culture.
- 59:46Jamaica have the second biggest culture.
- 59:49Yeah.
- 59:50In terms of black people.
- 59:52Yeah.
- 59:53Inflates.
- 59:54Even when we go another gym.
- 59:56That I got you.
- 59:58A lot of South Africans.
- 59:59And they always greet me.
- 1:00:02Wa-guan.
- 1:00:03Ta-man.
- 1:00:04And any little Jamaica, you know.
- 1:00:06Sure.
- 1:00:07But they know.
- 1:00:08Yes.
- 1:00:09And because of the influence of them watching TV, watching series, watching whatever they watch.
- 1:00:14You understand?
- 1:00:15They're like, you okay.
- 1:00:16Ta-boy.
- 1:00:17Ta-boy.
- 1:00:18And them things.
- 1:00:19Yeah.
- 1:00:20Yeah.
- 1:00:21You know, so it's cool, man.
- 1:00:23And once I saw Jamaica, everything changed.
- 1:00:27Everybody just.
- 1:00:28Oh.
- 1:00:29Like, I remember one time I was with one of my friends with the American.
- 1:00:34And they asked, where is she from?
- 1:00:37She said I'm from Seattle.
- 1:00:38Not like that.
- 1:00:39And I said, I'm from Jamaica.
- 1:00:40And I said, what?
- 1:00:41Like.
- 1:00:42And the attention turned to me.
- 1:00:44You know what I mean?
- 1:00:45So yeah.
- 1:00:46And again, we don't come here often.
- 1:00:49So therefore, when we come here, people try to capitalize on getting to know what Jamaica
- 1:00:56is, what we are really like.
- 1:00:59Would you agree that our country suffers from brain drain, right?
- 1:01:03People go abroad and they don't come back.
- 1:01:05Yeah.
- 1:01:06Do you ever feel a sense of guilt or perhaps you should be returning to bring your wealth of experience,
- 1:01:15your knowledge, your passion that you have grown, right?
- 1:01:19As a person from seeing the world, should you be bringing it back home?
- 1:01:24Yes, I know.
- 1:01:27Explain.
- 1:01:28I mean, for me, I always say, all right, cool.
- 1:01:35If somebody boasts in their ass, right?
- 1:01:41Trying to make it.
- 1:01:42There's no support there.
- 1:01:44I see with even the Jamaica not leads.
- 1:01:46Where some of them start jumping ship on the other countries, right?
- 1:01:50The government has to do better.
- 1:01:52Because if I'm here boasting my ass and trying to reach where I want to be.
- 1:01:57And then when I get there, all of a sudden you're going to run in and try to bring me back to Jamaica
- 1:02:03and try to deal with me and all of them.
- 1:02:06I'm going to tell you.
- 1:02:09F-5.
- 1:02:10Yana-san, as much as I love my country, Yana-san, where is the support?
- 1:02:15It starts from there.
- 1:02:17So you felt unsupported when you were in Jamaica?
- 1:02:20No, not necessarily me.
- 1:02:23But I'm just saying, just in people in general.
- 1:02:25So I left Jamaica because I felt that my dreams were bigger than Jamaica.
- 1:02:32And I felt that I had this deep desire to showcase the place that I loved but to other people.
- 1:02:43And I felt that there was more weight in doing that abroad, right?
- 1:02:47Of course, we have tourists that come to Jamaica and you could argue very easily that you could open a restaurant in Jamaica
- 1:02:52and you could have Jamaica.
- 1:02:54But you know what?
- 1:02:55And I had this idea that if you could do it in London, if you could make it in London, then you could make it anywhere.
- 1:03:00And I always said, I'm coming back home.
- 1:03:03Looking back, however, I'm not sure if that belief was true to you what I'm saying.
- 1:03:11I look at the progress that Jamaica has made.
- 1:03:13I look at the changes that Jamaica has made.
- 1:03:16And I'm not sure if I needed to leave in order to become the next version of myself.
- 1:03:21Obviously, this is all speculative because I will never know.
- 1:03:25But sometimes I wonder if we are...
- 1:03:30It's a weird dichotomy because on one hand, we're very proud as Jamaica, right?
- 1:03:34Super proud, super confident, can't tell me nothing.
- 1:03:38And then on the other hand, I do feel like we have this idea that we need to...
- 1:03:43Whether it's education, we need to be educated, a foreign, you need to have communities abroad.
- 1:03:48It's a weird thing.
- 1:03:51I mean, you look at most of the politicians in Jamaica.
- 1:03:56I mean, their kids end up in the state study and all of that.
- 1:04:01For me, that's telling me, I don't trust our education system.
- 1:04:09Sure.
- 1:04:10As a politician, that's why it's telling me.
- 1:04:13You know what I mean?
- 1:04:15No.
- 1:04:16The kids in the universities in Jamaica.
- 1:04:19Let them stay there.
- 1:04:20Those are my broad.
- 1:04:21You know what I mean?
- 1:04:24Yeah, it's a weird one, man.
- 1:04:27But I've tried to...
- 1:04:30With my agents, right?
- 1:04:34Try to get them...
- 1:04:36Well, they agreed, right?
- 1:04:38First, to get...
- 1:04:40Like, go to Jamaica.
- 1:04:42Keep like a talent search.
- 1:04:44Okay.
- 1:04:45And find...
- 1:04:47A boy and a girl...
- 1:04:49To bring...
- 1:04:50To South Africa.
- 1:04:51Okay.
- 1:04:52To give them...
- 1:04:53Modeling experience.
- 1:04:54But not only modeling experience.
- 1:04:56Just experience a travel.
- 1:04:57And come outside...
- 1:04:59Of Jamaica.
- 1:05:01And see the world in a different light.
- 1:05:03You understand?
- 1:05:04Have them here for three months.
- 1:05:06While they're model.
- 1:05:07They can learn about different things.
- 1:05:09You know what I mean?
- 1:05:10So they have agreed.
- 1:05:11So it's for us to get it...
- 1:05:13On the ground, running in Jamaica.
- 1:05:15So we can go and do all of that.
- 1:05:17So that's something I want to do.
- 1:05:19And I want to do it every year.
- 1:05:22You know what I mean?
- 1:05:23Where every year we go and get, you know, two months.
- 1:05:25Yeah.
- 1:05:26The male and female to come.
- 1:05:27And experience just the fashion industry.
- 1:05:31Being an international model.
- 1:05:33You know what I mean?
- 1:05:35Yeah.
- 1:05:36Do Jamaica have a good reputation in the fashion industry?
- 1:05:41I have no clue.
- 1:05:43No.
- 1:05:44I have no clue.
- 1:05:47I mean, models are...
- 1:05:49Some...
- 1:05:50It depends on the individual.
- 1:05:51I know.
- 1:05:52It depends on where to come from.
- 1:05:53Yeah.
- 1:05:54Let's just say it's like...
- 1:05:56You hear of quite a few big success stories, right?
- 1:06:00And I imagine that...
- 1:06:02If you're leaving Jamaica for the first time to work internationally.
- 1:06:05Yeah.
- 1:06:06There is so much culture shock that you could experience.
- 1:06:09Yeah.
- 1:06:10That sometimes industries like fashion aren't very forgiving.
- 1:06:14Right?
- 1:06:15So you might have a young girl, a young guy, you know, New York for the first time.
- 1:06:18They're first winter.
- 1:06:19And, you know, winter can be depressing.
- 1:06:21I know.
- 1:06:22Right?
- 1:06:23Like it can...
- 1:06:24For some people, it's just the weather.
- 1:06:25But for others, your spirit is like you say broken.
- 1:06:29Yeah.
- 1:06:30So if the industry isn't necessarily kind, you know, fashion is what it is, right?
- 1:06:37It's not necessarily going to make space for you to work out your new alignment.
- 1:06:42Yeah.
- 1:06:43The thing is, you just have to be adaptable and just take it on the chin, man.
- 1:06:50Yeah.
- 1:06:51And just roll with it and learn and try to learn quickly.
- 1:06:53You know what I mean?
- 1:06:54Just try to pick up things and understand how the industry works.
- 1:06:59You know what I mean?
- 1:07:00Because I always tell people that us, the models, or the talent, is at least important.
- 1:07:10Okay.
- 1:07:11To the production.
- 1:07:12Right.
- 1:07:13You understand?
- 1:07:14Because they can replace us.
- 1:07:15No.
- 1:07:16Right.
- 1:07:17You know what I'm saying?
- 1:07:18Yeah.
- 1:07:19But they can replace the director like that.
- 1:07:21The production company did this and that.
- 1:07:23You know what I mean?
- 1:07:24All of those are more important than us.
- 1:07:27So once you know that.
- 1:07:29Yeah.
- 1:07:30Then they take it all, all you want to take it.
- 1:07:32You know what I mean?
- 1:07:33Yeah.
- 1:07:34When you think of your life, no.
- 1:07:38Did you visualize this?
- 1:07:41Did you visualize this version?
- 1:07:44No.
- 1:07:45No.
- 1:07:46What was it going to look like?
- 1:07:51Being in Jamaica.
- 1:07:53Okay.
- 1:07:54Being in Jamaica.
- 1:07:55When I was like, early 20s.
- 1:07:57Being in Jamaica.
- 1:08:00Running a studio, being a musician, being an artist.
- 1:08:05You know what I mean?
- 1:08:07All of that.
- 1:08:08And yeah, just as I said, leaving Jamaica was never on the cards.
- 1:08:15It was never.
- 1:08:17You know, probably have kids, you know, family and all of that by now.
- 1:08:21But being in Jamaica.
- 1:08:23In Jamaica.
- 1:08:24You know.
- 1:08:25Do you only have one sister?
- 1:08:26Four.
- 1:08:27Yeah, four sisters.
- 1:08:28Two in the UK, one in the US and yeah, my twins.
- 1:08:32So everybody left.
- 1:08:35One was born in the UK and then the other two left there.
- 1:08:40Okay.
- 1:08:41So being a twin.
- 1:08:44Please tell me that you absolutely love your twin.
- 1:08:47Like tell me that she's your favorite person in the world.
- 1:08:50No, we're total opposites.
- 1:08:53Yeah, but is she your favorite person in the world?
- 1:08:56No.
- 1:08:57Oh, no.
- 1:08:58Listen, listen, listen, listen.
- 1:08:59Yeah, my sister, I love her.
- 1:09:01We're just not kids at time and we have different views.
- 1:09:06Okay.
- 1:09:07Online.
- 1:09:08Oh, no.
- 1:09:09So this is my dream.
- 1:09:10Well, when we used to go school.
- 1:09:11We used to go medical, right?
- 1:09:13Nobody knew we were related.
- 1:09:15Oh, really?
- 1:09:16You don't look alike?
- 1:09:17No.
- 1:09:18Boy and girl.
- 1:09:19No, no.
- 1:09:20We call it...
- 1:09:21I know that you're fraternal, clearly, but you can still look alike.
- 1:09:24We...
- 1:09:25We never used to hang out.
- 1:09:27Nothing like that.
- 1:09:28The only way people knew is by the surname.
- 1:09:31Okay.
- 1:09:32That's all people knew.
- 1:09:33Right.
- 1:09:34You know what I mean?
- 1:09:35So yeah, we...
- 1:09:36She...
- 1:09:37Her code was like...
- 1:09:40The more...
- 1:09:41You're a side.
- 1:09:42Up, tone.
- 1:09:44Up, tone.
- 1:09:45You know what I mean?
- 1:09:46And...
- 1:09:48Right.
- 1:09:49You understand?
- 1:09:50So as I say, polar opposites.
- 1:09:52Wow.
- 1:09:53Yeah.
- 1:09:54But do you have any sort of, like, twin magic in adulthood?
- 1:09:59So when I say twin magic, a good example.
- 1:10:02Yesterday I took the girls to their first gymnastics class.
- 1:10:05Oh, nice.
- 1:10:06And now they did their first one and thirds.
- 1:10:08Really?
- 1:10:09Yeah.
- 1:10:10So it was so sweet because one twin had been asking about...
- 1:10:13I don't know where she gets this gymnastics thing from,
- 1:10:15but she was asking every day.
- 1:10:16So I said, let me go find a class.
- 1:10:17That's weird.
- 1:10:18Now I've got it.
- 1:10:19They don't watch TV.
- 1:10:20They don't know where she gets it from.
- 1:10:21Oh, she don't know where she gets it from.
- 1:10:23But traveling, one of the disadvantages is that you can't really do extra collectivities
- 1:10:28because you're always moving.
- 1:10:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:30And stability, yeah.
- 1:10:31Yeah.
- 1:10:32And so I messaged all of the...
- 1:10:33I drove an hour and a half to get to this gymnastics class.
- 1:10:35What?
- 1:10:36It was the only one that replied to me.
- 1:10:38Honestly.
- 1:10:39So anyway, the point is that in the car on the way,
- 1:10:42like one sister rolls on the other and hurt her finger.
- 1:10:46And so the other sister with the hurt finger says,
- 1:10:49I'm not doing gymnastics besides...
- 1:10:51Right, because that was not nice.
- 1:10:53And you didn't say sorry.
- 1:10:55Okay.
- 1:10:56And I'm just driving.
- 1:10:57I don't get involved.
- 1:10:58Got to love it, yeah.
- 1:10:59At all.
- 1:11:00So I'm like, okay, cool.
- 1:11:01As soon as we step into this class,
- 1:11:03these two children are hand in hand.
- 1:11:06As soon as, not even I look at them,
- 1:11:09to the point where the teachers are like,
- 1:11:11oh my gosh, they're just inseparable.
- 1:11:13And I'm thinking, yeah, that's not what they said in the car.
- 1:11:16In the car, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:17Yeah, I guess it's a good,
- 1:11:18it comes down to, you know,
- 1:11:20safe space.
- 1:11:21Oh, 100%.
- 1:11:22New environment, man.
- 1:11:23Oh, 100%.
- 1:11:24You know what I mean?
- 1:11:25Oh, 100%.
- 1:11:26But what I have learned through them
- 1:11:27is before, if one like daughter
- 1:11:29complaining about the next one,
- 1:11:30I would try and mediate.
- 1:11:32And I have learned very quickly...
- 1:11:34To let them start the door.
- 1:11:35Don't bother.
- 1:11:36You know why?
- 1:11:37Because I'll be upset on your behalf.
- 1:11:38And you have long gone moved on.
- 1:11:39You're like playing back to normal.
- 1:11:41And I'm still angry.
- 1:11:42Because I forget things like that.
- 1:11:44Literally.
- 1:11:45But it's just, it's even the way they sleep.
- 1:11:47They sleep in sync.
- 1:11:49Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:50It's like, it's just magic.
- 1:11:51Yeah, me and my sister
- 1:11:53were used to sleep in the same bed.
- 1:11:54And all of that.
- 1:11:55And I know the moment I could sleep by myself.
- 1:11:59The thing is, I couldn't go to bed with our daughter.
- 1:12:03Really?
- 1:12:04Yeah.
- 1:12:05And vice versa.
- 1:12:06So sweet.
- 1:12:07If I was doing something,
- 1:12:09she was a movie,
- 1:12:11let Marlon come to bed and vice versa.
- 1:12:14And then we had to go to bed and them things.
- 1:12:16But I know.
- 1:12:17Yeah, we're just a different one.
- 1:12:20Oh, pops.
- 1:12:21We're different.
- 1:12:23I hope my children don't say that.
- 1:12:24No, the thing is...
- 1:12:25Because they're also very different.
- 1:12:27Their characters are completely, completely different.
- 1:12:29With them being girls,
- 1:12:31they're probably, it probably will stay the same.
- 1:12:34I just thought everybody,
- 1:12:35I've spoken to other fraternal twins,
- 1:12:36boy girl twins.
- 1:12:37Yeah.
- 1:12:38And they said that they're deeply connected.
- 1:12:40Really?
- 1:12:41Yeah.
- 1:12:42And so normally,
- 1:12:43what?
- 1:12:44Is it possible that they won't be?
- 1:12:46I mean, not even by food who connected girls,
- 1:12:48fleeing.
- 1:12:49Nothing.
- 1:12:50Cause I'm thinking food.
- 1:12:51I actually cook food.
- 1:12:53I don't know.
- 1:12:55Wow.
- 1:12:56We'll have a conversation in about 15 years' time.
- 1:12:58And I'll tell you,
- 1:12:59if I'm traumatized or if I'm happy.
- 1:13:01Yeah.
- 1:13:02If my children grow up
- 1:13:04and they're not like still...
- 1:13:06Tight.
- 1:13:07I'd be so like,
- 1:13:09oh my gosh, what have I done?
- 1:13:11Yeah.
- 1:13:12I mean, it comes on to them though.
- 1:13:14Of course, I have to appreciate that.
- 1:13:16I can cry to you privately.
- 1:13:18Yeah, exactly.
- 1:13:19I'm pretend to them that it's okay.
- 1:13:21I guess my mom did that.
- 1:13:23Cry, privately.
- 1:13:25I know.
- 1:13:26Cause you're always said,
- 1:13:28you guys must live good.
- 1:13:29You must...
- 1:13:30You know what I mean?
- 1:13:32Love is system.
- 1:13:33Love, love, love.
- 1:13:34Not saying we don't love each other,
- 1:13:35but we just...
- 1:13:36We just love differently.
- 1:13:38We just love...
- 1:13:40Yeah, exactly.
- 1:13:41She loves here and I love here.
- 1:13:43You know what I mean?
- 1:13:44Did that make it easier for you to leave Jamaica?
- 1:13:49Yeah.
- 1:13:50Yeah.
- 1:13:51You know what I mean?
- 1:13:53Yeah, because once I left out,
- 1:13:56it's like, alright, cool.
- 1:13:58You know what I mean?
- 1:13:59It's not like, oh man, I miss my sister.
- 1:14:01I miss my...
- 1:14:02You know what I mean?
- 1:14:03And the thing is, when I came here,
- 1:14:05I came here without...
- 1:14:06Without permission.
- 1:14:07Without permission.
- 1:14:08Right.
- 1:14:09You understand?
- 1:14:10So, as uncomfortable as it became sometimes,
- 1:14:13yeah, we have to remember.
- 1:14:14As I said, when it got you okay,
- 1:14:16and then you have to remember,
- 1:14:17why did you get here?
- 1:14:18Yeah.
- 1:14:19To do something?
- 1:14:20I'm a see-through.
- 1:14:21You know what I mean?
- 1:14:22I have a concern to remind myself.
- 1:14:24I know, for me,
- 1:14:26with my daughter being here, you know,
- 1:14:28it's even harder to leave.
- 1:14:29Of course.
- 1:14:30So, even if somebody wants to leave
- 1:14:32in that next year or something.
- 1:14:33It's not happening.
- 1:14:34Exactly.
- 1:14:35Yeah.
- 1:14:36You know what I mean?
- 1:14:37So, I've moved...
- 1:14:38I want to be closer.
- 1:14:39So, you know,
- 1:14:41move to Europe or whatever.
- 1:14:42Right.
- 1:14:43Which is something that's not in the cards.
- 1:14:44Okay.
- 1:14:45Because our mom don't want that.
- 1:14:46Okay.
- 1:14:47She's on the yoga Bali retreat.
- 1:14:49Yeah.
- 1:14:50She's not interested in going back.
- 1:14:51Really?
- 1:14:52Yeah.
- 1:14:53To live.
- 1:14:54Yeah.
- 1:14:55Is it just like,
- 1:14:56whether culture...
- 1:14:57Just...
- 1:14:58Culture, politics.
- 1:14:59Okay.
- 1:15:00I mean, all kinds of different things.
- 1:15:02Yeah.
- 1:15:03What is an experience that happened to you
- 1:15:06since you've been here
- 1:15:07that you would never seen coming?
- 1:15:10Getting arrested.
- 1:15:12Getting arrested.
- 1:15:14What were you doing to jail?
- 1:15:16Did you have to actually go to jail?
- 1:15:18Yeah.
- 1:15:19What happened?
- 1:15:20All right.
- 1:15:21So, when I just got here, right?
- 1:15:24We as Jamaicans, we get a three-month visa.
- 1:15:28Okay.
- 1:15:29So, no.
- 1:15:30Three months.
- 1:15:31Basically, a visa freak.
- 1:15:32We don't need visas to come here.
- 1:15:33Oh, I didn't know that.
- 1:15:34Yeah.
- 1:15:35So, you get three months, right?
- 1:15:36And so, what we...
- 1:15:38What I normally did was I would go across
- 1:15:40to another African country.
- 1:15:42Okay.
- 1:15:43To, you know, get a stamp back, come back.
- 1:15:45Yes.
- 1:15:46And when I...
- 1:15:47This was in Johannesburg.
- 1:15:48Okay.
- 1:15:49So, when I came to Cape Town,
- 1:15:50I did it once, right?
- 1:15:51And I said to my agent in Johannesburg,
- 1:15:53I'm saying, you know, it's too far to travel all the time
- 1:15:56to do that.
- 1:15:57So, can you sort out something for me?
- 1:15:59A word permit, blah, blah, this on that.
- 1:16:01And she said, yes.
- 1:16:02She knows somebody, who knows somebody.
- 1:16:03But...
- 1:16:04Big red flag.
- 1:16:06When somebody said, I know somebody, who knows somebody.
- 1:16:09Oh, really?
- 1:16:10Yeah.
- 1:16:11Right?
- 1:16:12So, anyway, a long story short,
- 1:16:14got by the word permit, this on that,
- 1:16:17and a book that commercial.
- 1:16:19Okay.
- 1:16:20TV commercial for Marriott.
- 1:16:22Marriott hotel.
- 1:16:23And it was in Thailand.
- 1:16:24There was you didn't in Thailand.
- 1:16:26So, when I went, you know, to the immigration officer,
- 1:16:29you know, you're from Jamaica, you know,
- 1:16:31where you dress, you know, typically smoke weed,
- 1:16:33you're on fast.
- 1:16:34You know what I mean?
- 1:16:36And then she went to my passport.
- 1:16:37And she said, the work permit.
- 1:16:38And she said, this is fake.
- 1:16:41And she said, you're going to get arrested.
- 1:16:45And I said, come on, man.
- 1:16:47Oh, I'm too old for it.
- 1:16:48God, for me, I don't know.
- 1:16:49Right?
- 1:16:50Right?
- 1:16:51And she said, this is fake.
- 1:16:52And then, you know, I said, call my agent.
- 1:16:55She called her.
- 1:16:56This and that.
- 1:16:57I spoke to her.
- 1:16:58And she said, all right.
- 1:16:59Cool.
- 1:17:00I'm coming.
- 1:17:01Right?
- 1:17:02And she came to the airport.
- 1:17:03But she never saw me.
- 1:17:04Because, of course, by then, that took me in for processing
- 1:17:07and brought me into a different thing.
- 1:17:09And, you know, funnily,
- 1:17:13when I was in processing,
- 1:17:16that showed me how it's fake.
- 1:17:18Okay.
- 1:17:19So, that they had this thing.
- 1:17:21No, the color was totally different.
- 1:17:23I mean, it was a different shade of green, right?
- 1:17:25Oh, Jesus.
- 1:17:26Which I wouldn't know.
- 1:17:27Sure.
- 1:17:28Because I would have never seen the original before.
- 1:17:29So, it wasn't even a good looking fake.
- 1:17:32As a piece of paper,
- 1:17:34where they mostly print.
- 1:17:36Right.
- 1:17:37And then, because the thing is normally,
- 1:17:38they look through this thing.
- 1:17:40Like, if you look in the passport or anything,
- 1:17:43or if you look at your visa.
- 1:17:45Right.
- 1:17:46In a visa you have,
- 1:17:47you'll see in green,
- 1:17:48in a, you'll see some symbol out there.
- 1:17:51Sure.
- 1:17:52Right?
- 1:17:53And they showed me, clear as they.
- 1:17:54Oh, Jesus.
- 1:17:55No.
- 1:17:56You understand?
- 1:17:57And I'll never forget,
- 1:17:59walking across the airport in Johannesburg,
- 1:18:02busy airport.
- 1:18:04It was me and this Somali guy.
- 1:18:07And we had handcuffs.
- 1:18:10And I was talking to the police officer.
- 1:18:13Smiling.
- 1:18:14And people probably were confused.
- 1:18:16Why?
- 1:18:17You know what I mean?
- 1:18:18Because we were talking about cricket.
- 1:18:20Right.
- 1:18:21Because in my head,
- 1:18:23yeah, I'm a bit let old tonight.
- 1:18:25Okay.
- 1:18:26Yana-san.
- 1:18:27Because it's a, you know.
- 1:18:29A misunderstanding.
- 1:18:30A misunderstanding.
- 1:18:31Very. Right.
- 1:18:32You know what I mean?
- 1:18:33And when to the prison,
- 1:18:37when the jail,
- 1:18:39and the open the cell,
- 1:18:41I said,
- 1:18:43go,
- 1:18:44and like 17 people
- 1:18:47on the floor,
- 1:18:48lay down.
- 1:18:50And I'm like,
- 1:18:51and then it started.
- 1:18:53I said,
- 1:18:54oh, I'm serious.
- 1:18:56So I'm serious, you know what I mean?
- 1:18:59And I remember asking the police.
- 1:19:04And he said to me,
- 1:19:07I know you're innocent.
- 1:19:10But it's in your passport.
- 1:19:12Oh, no.
- 1:19:13So therefore your guilty.
- 1:19:16I've fraud.
- 1:19:17Right. Right.
- 1:19:18And so I went in,
- 1:19:20I remember the morning,
- 1:19:21the next morning,
- 1:19:23I went outside,
- 1:19:26I found a little corner,
- 1:19:28and I cried,
- 1:19:30for like a few minutes.
- 1:19:33Right.
- 1:19:35And I said,
- 1:19:37all right, cool.
- 1:19:38Accept.
- 1:19:40The situation.
- 1:19:41Invite.
- 1:19:42You can't make anybody see a cry.
- 1:19:45And then I get out.
- 1:19:47And the thing is,
- 1:19:48I was worried about my mom.
- 1:19:50But my mom would,
- 1:19:51without thought.
- 1:19:52So I remember,
- 1:19:53when my agent she came,
- 1:19:56I should brought,
- 1:19:58a lawyer.
- 1:19:59Okay. Right.
- 1:20:00And she called my mom,
- 1:20:02and I spoke to my mom.
- 1:20:03And she already called my mom.
- 1:20:06And your mom's in Jamaica.
- 1:20:08Yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:09Get enough call that her son
- 1:20:10has been arrested in South Africa.
- 1:20:11Yeah.
- 1:20:12So, yo,
- 1:20:13it was a calmness.
- 1:20:15I've ever heard my mom.
- 1:20:16Really?
- 1:20:17The calmness.
- 1:20:19And just that,
- 1:20:22made me just,
- 1:20:23all right, cool.
- 1:20:24Yeah.
- 1:20:25You know what I mean?
- 1:20:27All good.
- 1:20:28Do we know if she was really feeling calm,
- 1:20:30or she was just trying to give you the calmness?
- 1:20:31I don't know.
- 1:20:32Maybe she was,
- 1:20:33or maybe because she knew before.
- 1:20:35Okay.
- 1:20:36She kind of probably thought of the multitasking
- 1:20:38and processed it.
- 1:20:39Yeah.
- 1:20:40You know what I mean?
- 1:20:41And, um,
- 1:20:42so yeah,
- 1:20:43went in,
- 1:20:44um,
- 1:20:46yo,
- 1:20:47the conditions,
- 1:20:49the conditions.
- 1:20:51Are they not the one?
- 1:20:52No.
- 1:20:53Rats.
- 1:20:54Rats.
- 1:20:55Yeah.
- 1:20:56You just heard how I feel.
- 1:20:57Yeah.
- 1:20:58The map,
- 1:20:59this big part,
- 1:21:00yo,
- 1:21:01I was there for a week.
- 1:21:03You were in jail for a week?
- 1:21:05I was there for a week until I got bail.
- 1:21:07So, when the lawyer came, right?
- 1:21:10My agent,
- 1:21:12the one that she brought.
- 1:21:13Yes.
- 1:21:14He was telling me to
- 1:21:16plead guilty.
- 1:21:18I'm saying,
- 1:21:19why?
- 1:21:20I did nothing wrong.
- 1:21:21Right.
- 1:21:22You understand?
- 1:21:23Okay.
- 1:21:24So, he came
- 1:21:25and
- 1:21:26I told him the story
- 1:21:27and he said,
- 1:21:28this was Friday.
- 1:21:29He said,
- 1:21:30Monday I'll have you
- 1:21:31don't bill.
- 1:21:32And that's a really.
- 1:21:33So, I give him the connection
- 1:21:34to, um,
- 1:21:35the agent,
- 1:21:36you know,
- 1:21:37you know,
- 1:21:38you know,
- 1:21:39you know,
- 1:21:40you know,
- 1:21:41you know,
- 1:21:42you know,
- 1:21:43you know,
- 1:21:44you know,
- 1:21:45you know,
- 1:21:46you know,
- 1:21:47you know,
- 1:21:48you know,
- 1:21:49you know,
- 1:21:50you know,
- 1:21:51you know,
- 1:21:52you know,
- 1:21:53you know,
- 1:21:54you know,
- 1:21:55you know,
- 1:21:56you know,
- 1:21:57you know,
- 1:21:58you know,
- 1:21:59agent and
- 1:22:00she only spoke
- 1:22:17here in
- 1:22:18God Bale,
- 1:22:20the Monday
- 1:22:21I have one on two phones and in a person and you love the water them that will you know you're on the
- 1:22:28Mode and then go buy some kfc and this and that really yeah yeah I never bring back but the food there I
- 1:22:35Never ate why it just it was horrible it was bread tea like I
- 1:22:43Know how to feel about ball ball if it's not chicken when I eat
- 1:22:48You got me asked and I remember my girlfriend at the time she flew up from Cape Town
- 1:22:54I should buy a
- 1:22:55Pool burger. Okay, two burgers in our chocolate a Bible
- 1:23:01and
- 1:23:03She gave the water to give me okay, so did they give it to you?
- 1:23:09One burger may get enough. Well, I never knew is when I came out and spoke to her
- 1:23:14I'm saying yeah, he sent his one burger. Yeah, she said no, but I gave him
- 1:23:20One we get yeah, that's that but we're not we're not got bail, right and I was supposed to
- 1:23:27Leave with her and we'll go to the airport and come to Cape Town. Okay
- 1:23:30Them carloads at least right something else it
- 1:23:35Huh anyway?
- 1:23:37Malign up
- 1:23:39I'm going I want one big
- 1:23:41Keeh's fun, right?
- 1:23:43I will drive for both I owe her
- 1:23:47I want to reach miss a guillet pool. I miss some man in an orange suit and I'm cheering
- 1:23:55I'm gonna say
- 1:23:56What is
- 1:23:57Maximum security prison
- 1:24:00You're not going there. That's right. I brought me they've brought you to a maximum security. So I'm so I'm gonna go
- 1:24:07I'm gonna set to the driver
- 1:24:09Say yo, I'm not supposed to be here. I got bail this morning, right?
- 1:24:15And then look for me and him said
- 1:24:18All right, go back now van
- 1:24:21Go back now the van and then he the brought back another prisoner who was sick. Okay, so he needed medical attention
- 1:24:29Right, so me and him rule. Roll. Not the back of the the kids. Yep, and then when we go and then
- 1:24:35The driver said
- 1:24:37Give me a thing
- 1:24:40It's a marriage, but this up here
- 1:24:45Take on a self and then
- 1:24:48Yeah, me would move over and at the time when they send that and then
- 1:24:52We came to keep them
- 1:24:53Yeah, and then I had to be back on fort for court and all of that because
- 1:24:58I think it's what they what they charged me for was fraud
- 1:25:01But you know, I mean so basically
- 1:25:06They could have deported me if they want, but they chose fraud. Okay, so therefore when the the fraud kids have thrown out
- 1:25:14They still wanted to because the hell on to my passport
- 1:25:18So how are you going back on forth without John is very gone kept on. Oh, you could yeah, you don't need it. Yeah, okay
- 1:25:26So the hell on to my passport and say sending letters to Malaya
- 1:25:30that
- 1:25:32He can get this part passport when he comes to John has worked and leave without without ticket onwards. Okay, and I'm saying no
- 1:25:38And and thank goodness. I was in the position
- 1:25:41To be able to afford to fight them right because I'm saying
- 1:25:45You're missing with a wrong one. Yeah, that's done. Yeah, and so Malaya sent them a letter saying that
- 1:25:52You need to give him what his passport is that is a property of him and his country and blah blah what you're doing is legal blah blah
- 1:25:58Right and we got the high court involved
- 1:26:02And um when they had the date for them to come to the high court
- 1:26:07God, I would have to leave John's birth to keep told the high court cuts is here. Okay
- 1:26:12The day before the summer message. Oh, we have decided to give up Malaya this passport
- 1:26:19And I'm like all of that because they wanted to
- 1:26:23So
- 1:26:25Then I'll for be eyes real here. Okay. Yeah
- 1:26:29So yeah, that and I
- 1:26:32Not in my last dream. I will say I would
- 1:26:35Ever I'd been to jail our earth in vision. I'm sure you're there for a week. Yeah
- 1:26:43Wow, so when you're in jail
- 1:26:46That and correct me if I'm wrong, right? But jail is before some people go to prison. Yeah
- 1:26:52So jail so you can be mixed with all kinds of near near where the court is okay
- 1:26:56Yannasan and all of that
- 1:26:58And I remember meeting this guy in there and I was talking to him on
- 1:27:02Um
- 1:27:03It's a white guy and he's you know talking about you know
- 1:27:07He just ran them things to talk about you know, he must not do drugs and jokes this and jokes that time blah blah this and that so I said to him
- 1:27:14So I ain't here for
- 1:27:17I'm saying come on man, you know, so people are in there for all kinds of
- 1:27:25And are you able to sleep from just from the perspective of
- 1:27:29Again, maybe I've been influenced by like movies and stuff
- 1:27:33But the idea of sleeping in a common area with strangers that I don't know feels very unsettling
- 1:27:40Yo
- 1:27:42Yeah, if I make it work, you know, you can't even think about that
- 1:27:47You can't even think about that and so I'm not comfortable
- 1:27:51I
- 1:27:53Accepted it quickly and um fitting
- 1:27:58You know, I mean and did it feel like a week or did it feel like long ago?
- 1:28:02Did it felt long? Did it felt longer because I think is we had no sense of time
- 1:28:08As in there's no clock no watch no nothing. So um the day is took forever
- 1:28:15Forever and we had few little magazines. They really could read and all of that and yeah, how big is the space when it's like 17 people
- 1:28:24it it was
- 1:28:27Almost as big as this room, but but a little longer. Okay, you know, I mean what probably
- 1:28:31To wear that light is right there. So comfortable enough that you can
- 1:28:35Yeah, we are really could have you know people on each side right you know lean down
- 1:28:40I want the energy as in like our people
- 1:28:44now my way
- 1:28:48Friends, I mean we became friends, you know, I mean and this and that we talk to each other here each other story blah blah
- 1:28:54This and that and um yeah because even when I remember when I left and got bail and I came back to keep tone
- 1:29:01When I'm a boy Z was from Ghana who wasn't there and I mean you said send me some ear time as in credit right to the phone because there was one phone that we had
- 1:29:12That was hidden. I mean and when it needed to charge to be charged then they what I would charge it and you know
- 1:29:18So I'm saying you'll send some ear time to that and yeah
- 1:29:22Wow, I don't think I could do jail prison anything
- 1:29:26Yeah, it roughman and and and part of the reason I never ate is because there was this one toilet
- 1:29:35In a corner outside where that this um like curtain that the tire crossed where he could just you know mean and um
- 1:29:44And it was winter and it was a metal toilet
- 1:29:49And when I came in I'm saying I'm not using that
- 1:29:52I'm not using that so I purpose in about it
- 1:29:56So I didn't have to go to the bathroom. Yes, I
- 1:29:58P in it and I was not going to sit on that you know you can't squat. Eh? You can't squat. No, my man. And the thing is there's no privacy
- 1:30:07No privacy, you know, yeah, do you think I am on the whole side of the attack?
- 1:30:12And then no, yeah, right
- 1:30:15Oh my goodness, you know, I mean so I mean what lesson learned um
- 1:30:20And I think it had to happen for me to end up getting residency here. Okay, because through all of that
- 1:30:30The bright light was me you know, so I know my situation but I'm becoming a permanent resident, yeah
- 1:30:39Yeah, I mean I'm glad that you saw the silver lining. Yeah, I mean you have to my I'm still stuck on the rats
- 1:30:46And
- 1:30:48And and you know
- 1:30:50When the mother-in-law pushed the um the big
- 1:30:53You know them big when them boy soup in a jomehaka and the crop soup on this one I like the mother-in-law push with tea
- 1:31:01And then in that little passage you said the little rat the marano pandung
- 1:31:06And
- 1:31:08Mr. Mina
- 1:31:10All right
- 1:31:12Is there anything about your move your life that we haven't touched on that you'd like to speak about?
- 1:31:22Yeah, that necessarily not really I mean
- 1:31:26What I have to think think about it. Oh, yeah
- 1:31:30Hugo Bass
- 1:31:31Okay, yeah, I did that I did a campaign for them
- 1:31:35Which was shot on the Hugo Bass yacht. Oh, yeah, yeah, that was tell me you were a bit excited
- 1:31:41Tell me that you are a bit excited about this one. I mean, I can't swim
- 1:31:47I can't swim. I hate big body a water
- 1:31:52Right, so I mean
- 1:31:55Yeah, you can't say excited about being and and that and and you know when I came off I was wobbling and I was like
- 1:32:02Yeah, I mean and then that asked me okay
- 1:32:07Can you swim because they wanted somebody to jump off into the ocean? It's in me. I'm sorry. I'll press it
- 1:32:13Me neither that nope. Oh my god. I mean, but it was cool. It was a dope shoot
- 1:32:20dope exposure as well, you know
- 1:32:23So that was cool. What do you think in this like day and age like you say about everyone wants to a model
- 1:32:30What do you think that people on the estimate? So for example?
- 1:32:36I knew
- 1:32:37Quite early on that I wasn't caught out for the modeling industry in the sense that I love food too much
- 1:32:44Right, I feel like also I feel like I'm thinner now than I was when I was even mr. Miko. Oh really? Yeah at the time. I just love food
- 1:32:51um, I also
- 1:32:53When you're a mr. Maker, you don't really have to go to castings in the traditional way, right? Because you have a title request
- 1:32:59So it's a bit easier, but the minute that
- 1:33:03Like prior to that that I'd have to sit in a room with people and I wait
- 1:33:10I'm not saying that I have an ego. It's not about an ego. I just don't like sitting and waiting. Yeah, yeah, yeah
- 1:33:16That's a thing. There was a lot of waiting a lot of waiting even on set. Oh, it's just so much waiting
- 1:33:22There is a lot of waiting
- 1:33:24And then also the people that we're waiting with I'm not trying to disrespect models
- 1:33:29So please don't come for me. Yeah, but respectfully
- 1:33:33There's just not that much to talk about right like especially. I don't know if it's an age thing
- 1:33:38I'm just trying to cover this by saying I get that I get that but it's not the most like
- 1:33:43Interesting conversations, but but I guess it comes on to Azase
- 1:33:49Be in a model are doing model, which is why that really resonated with me because I completely on those guys when we meet at a casting
- 1:33:58We don't talk about anything about modeling. Yeah, or the casting. That's gonna have a girl vibe
- 1:34:04Every every
- 1:34:05Football we talk about every little stupid thing. Yeah, you know me. So I guess with girls. It's different. I think so
- 1:34:11And so I knew that it wasn't for me and from like again as you say like do modeling or or be a model
- 1:34:17Even though people are like oh, so it's you know, I'm like no in my mind unless you are Naomi Campbell status
- 1:34:23You're not a model. Yeah, right? Like it's either the best or nothing at all
- 1:34:28And especially nowadays when like everyone's like on their Instagram and their model
- 1:34:32I'm like no like no do not disrespect the craft in this way by just thinking
- 1:34:38Everybody that is a model. You know me Instagram model and all that shit. It's terrible
- 1:34:43But what do you think it takes?
- 1:34:46No for someone who is genuinely interested not someone who's just like oh, I want to take pictures
- 1:34:51But someone who is genuinely passionate about the industry
- 1:34:55What would be your advice to that young person? That's like this is what I would do if I was in your position have thick skin
- 1:35:04Yeah, very important because as we said before you're the least important. Yeah
- 1:35:10In the industry when it comes to shoot our production right
- 1:35:14um
- 1:35:15And and don't take it personal
- 1:35:18don't take it personal because
- 1:35:21You you might go to a casting and I see somebody and then you see that advert somewhere and then say oh
- 1:35:27That's what I choose, but I look better than that person or I this are I went into the casting and I nailed the audition
- 1:35:34And whatever but it comes down to the look that they want
- 1:35:37The requested you as maybe at a similar look, but when they found somebody that said all right that person don't necessarily have to
- 1:35:45Is the the um audition, right? They can just have the look
- 1:35:49Unsit they can get that person to do what they want them to do, you know, I mean and that
- 1:35:55It took me a while to learn over time
- 1:35:58I'm not told grudges are are are bid
- 1:36:01Don't hearted you know, I mean because or whatever. I feel like that's a great lesson for life
- 1:36:06Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah seeing seeing opportunities and seeing other people get them and just say it's not for you
- 1:36:14And and for me how how I do it know is like if I go to a casting right and then I say a commercial like whether I'm watching
- 1:36:21American TV are
- 1:36:23CNN or whatever and I see
- 1:36:25commercial come on
- 1:36:27Seem casting because you know exactly what the cast advice up then you get to say oh, that's what it look like right
- 1:36:32And then you see a boy in it. I say
- 1:36:36Is that come for me if I don't get it you want someone I want one of my boys. Yes
- 1:36:41You know I'm saying yes. Yeah, so that that's all that's all I see man, you know
- 1:36:46What do you think is the reason why you've been able to have success in this industry?
- 1:36:52I guess by not taking it that's serious
- 1:36:55Yeah, why not because
- 1:36:57I
- 1:36:59When I just started right going to cast in
- 1:37:03You know, you're going to cast in you do what you're told right and then
- 1:37:08When you come out you start thinking man. I should have done that. I should have done that and and it will
- 1:37:13Drive it crazy for the rest of the you know, I mean I could have done that. I should have you there
- 1:37:20I
- 1:37:21Notice that
- 1:37:23What's on camera? You can't change it right so it makes no sense
- 1:37:30Killing yourself about what you could have or should have done right so for me once I go in the cast and then I do it once I
- 1:37:36Commote that door
- 1:37:38I've forgotten okay, you just leave it let it go. Yeah, I did what I did can't change it keep it moving
- 1:37:45What's the worst criticism you've received I remember once I went to an agency in New York and
- 1:37:52At the time I didn't understand what they were saying and now I understand it and
- 1:37:56The lady said to me at the time. She says
- 1:37:59You're just pretty and we don't do commercial
- 1:38:01I'm not just that
- 1:38:03I think it was also the use of the word just
- 1:38:06Oh, okay, that's a that's a bit mean and also at the time
- 1:38:10I thought to be a model you're supposed to be pretty
- 1:38:13Yeah, so I was confused as to why that was a reason not to yeah, I've learned. Yeah, I mean
- 1:38:20It just depends on how you need you look you know mean and and as it's the beauties in the eye are the big older, right? Yes. I'm sorry
- 1:38:29So
- 1:38:30We might look at somebody and so that person is beautiful or look at this person. So that person is ugly
- 1:38:36But to somebody else that person is is gorgeous. Yeah, you know, I mean so it's in the eye of the viola and
- 1:38:43Where are we to judge that yeah, what's beauty?
- 1:38:47You know, I mean if your daughter was older and she said to you that she wanted to be a model of it
- 1:38:54God
- 1:38:56Really why I mean we have we have done a campaign together
- 1:39:03Yeah, um for a clothing brand. That's so cute. Yeah, we have done it, but
- 1:39:09If it's up to her, I want her to decide sure. I'm not gonna push it, but you know
- 1:39:15You kind of I would kind of know. I won't tell her directly don't do it. I was kind of you know
- 1:39:20You know, yeah, exactly. You know because thing is
- 1:39:26I've been around I've seen you know
- 1:39:31I've objectified
- 1:39:33You know
- 1:39:35Women in swimsuits are bikinis are getting dressed and I don't want men to do that to my dad. It's so funny
- 1:39:42I was having this conversation with somebody about two weeks ago. Uh-huh, and I was saying
- 1:39:47So we were having a conversation and he is a very well-known person
- 1:39:51And he was just like any partner of his can be doing like lingerie shoots and stuff like that because that's a reflection on him
- 1:39:57Right, you're right, but it's a professional setting right like when you go to do a lingerie shoot
- 1:40:03It's not you walk in half naked just out in the roadside and I said you know when you do a fashion show
- 1:40:09You can't be like oh excuse me please. I need it some space to change because you need to put the next look on
- 1:40:14Yeah, immediately like right and I was like, you know, and everyone's in the zone, you know
- 1:40:19Everyone's professional and in the zone and he said to me let me tell you a story
- 1:40:22I thought go ahead and he goes
- 1:40:24He was walking for something. He's not a model, but because of his status
- 1:40:28Okay, he had asked him to be a face. Yeah, and him say he might not next bridging
- 1:40:34Where they're in the show and he said I just want to let you know that the two of us were standing there
- 1:40:39And we had time to look yeah, yeah, we had time to look and I was dying of laughter. I mean the first time I did
- 1:40:48A fashion show, right?
- 1:40:50And you know the mother's the females. Yes, you know, therefore coming in because sometimes some up two outfits in the same show right
- 1:40:56So they're coming on the changing and the jumping and this and that
- 1:41:00And I'm in the car. We didn't we didn't for our um sure, right? Right and some of my boys get up and say oh bro
- 1:41:07We go outside and give them space. I'm not leaving
- 1:41:12So I'm not leaving. I'm right here
- 1:41:15The understand and knowing how I am sure and you probably have all of people like me who think like me right
- 1:41:23I don't want my daughter to cause you were that are are yeah, we looked at like that. No, that is so funny
- 1:41:29That means I'm not going away
- 1:41:36But it's funny also because a lot of people ask me if I would have my girls be in a pageant, right?
- 1:41:44And before children, I don't think I was ever your typical pageant girl
- 1:41:48But I was never really into makeup. It wasn't the vibe. So before children. I was like no, it doesn't mean anything to me
- 1:41:55post children and I see my girls and I'm like oh my god wouldn't it be cute?
- 1:41:59Like wouldn't it be so cute if when there are all that that something that they wanted to do and you would use your
- 1:42:05Experiences yeah to do the course that me and it's funny because they they've modeled themselves not not with me at all
- 1:42:11Because I'm not in that game, but
- 1:42:14The first time I saw their campaign. I didn't know
- 1:42:18So you take them to shoot all the time, but sometimes it's catalogs for babies, right?
- 1:42:22Like you don't know that it's gonna be somewhere and so it was near my second restaurant
- 1:42:27And I had parked gone out to get something and I looked in the window of a store
- 1:42:32And she was there. They were both there. I'm not joking. I turned into a flipping idiot
- 1:42:36And I had them with me by the way. I'm running across the road
- 1:42:40So one's on the a-board one's in the window of the store. Yeah, and I'm like oh my
- 1:42:45That's that's her like
- 1:42:47I go into the store and I'm like speaking to people that work there
- 1:42:51I'm like these are the babies that are in your window and I think at first I'm like are you meant to be okay?
- 1:42:58right
- 1:42:59And then like I think they kind of settled it calm down
- 1:43:03And I was just like I was supposed to go to work after this note as in at the restaurant
- 1:43:06Yeah, best believe I went to a little brunch spot waves. I had a little mimosa
- 1:43:10I was like I am going to enjoy this moment that my babies and then I went to the website
- 1:43:16They're on the website too. I was screenshotting. I was doing it. Oh my gosh. It was so exciting
- 1:43:21And what was really sweet the manager kept the the boards because they're big right for the for the store
- 1:43:26I gave it to you. Yeah, oh really when he came and I didn't think he was going to I left my number
- 1:43:31But I didn't think that he was really going to and so when they changed out the store display
- 1:43:35They gave me them. Oh my gosh. I get to keep these
- 1:43:39But the point is is that I got them into modeling and and many people criticize it right
- 1:43:45In the same way that people criticize that in some of my videos online my children appear in them. Yeah
- 1:43:50And I accept the criticism. I mean, it's fine. I don't have an issue
- 1:43:55But I think for me their modeling was more about just having options right
- 1:44:01It was should you want to do this later on when you're older and cognizant of what that means
- 1:44:06Then you've already been in it right in a similar way that I think you know
- 1:44:11I have first went on a plane when I was six weeks old
- 1:44:14I don't remember
- 1:44:16Being six weeks on a plane
- 1:44:17But always knowing that I was able to and that that happened
- 1:44:22It made me feel like travel was accessible. Yeah, in the way that I kind of feel like they'll never remember that shoot
- 1:44:27Right that was definitely a moment. I completely accept that but knowing that you did it
- 1:44:32Sometimes gives you like the encouragement that should you want to
- 1:44:37Yeah, the reminder yeah
- 1:44:40Images 100% and I do think that you know, it's funny because
- 1:44:44On the same like line I completely see the dangers of
- 1:44:49constantly having like an image right like constantly thinking of yourself in that way. Yeah
- 1:44:54my dad was very adamant about
- 1:44:57Like character and education
- 1:44:59It wasn't a boat looks which is probably why I was not a great mr. Makeup because yeah
- 1:45:02I've grown up just knowing that it's who you are
- 1:45:05And I think that
- 1:45:09For my girls, I definitely want them to have all of that
- 1:45:13But I wouldn't mind at whom mr. Make action. You know what I mean at the side
- 1:45:18But also, you know by the time our children get old who knows who knows what the world's gonna look like
- 1:45:24Like AI is taking everyone's job
- 1:45:26There you go. It probably won't even need like humans to do it anymore
- 1:45:31You know, I mean it's crazy madness
- 1:45:34Anyway
- 1:45:36I think we've covered it all. I think I've asked you everything that I wanted to ask you
- 1:45:41My last question is
- 1:45:44No, it's an easy one. All right, got you if your life was a postcard. What would the picture look like?
- 1:45:55Galice Jesus peace
- 1:45:57Why
- 1:45:59Not that and you'll wonder why the people are more afraid of Jamaican men. No, that's what that
- 1:46:04We are victims
- 1:46:07Of what of being called
- 1:46:11Players and all of that, so you just rather embody it but not been named as such
- 1:46:17No more for represent foot foot foot foot foot foot foot foot foot foot what they
- 1:46:21So we are so you're just living up to their quick decision to the lies
- 1:46:25I'm just living up to the lies. Yeah, right you're a joke on. Thank you very much
- 1:46:36You
