Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy, and the digital space
- 0:10every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20And if you guys watch on YouTube, you might notice that I
- 0:24have a new little guest today. Well, she's not new.
- 0:26She has been on the podcast before, but she hasn't been on
- 0:28it in a very long time. It is my little doggie pumpkin.
- 0:32I actually don't think I've recorded with her since we moved
- 0:34to the studio, but I brought her to the office today because I
- 0:39don't think I let you guys know. But when we were away in Europe
- 0:42for my friend's wedding, my brother was taking care of her
- 0:44and he woke up one day and her face was like a balloon.
- 0:48Like it looked like she was in anaphylactic shock.
- 0:51Anyways, it turned out she had a really bad infection in her jaw
- 0:56from a back like molar tooth that got infected somehow.
- 1:01So she recently had surgery for it and she's doing really well.
- 1:05But you know, we have to keep a close eye on her.
- 1:07And Sean is going into the office today.
- 1:09So I was like, I'll bring her and she can guest Co host the
- 1:13pod. Anyways, let's just get straight
- 1:15into the episode for today. So the first story that I have
- 1:20for you guys is that Chapel Rhone has spoken out once again
- 1:23about her comments about endorsing a presidential
- 1:26candidate and how they have been skewed.
- 1:29So Chapel posted another TikTok just this morning.
- 1:33And look, I don't want to harp on this too much because we've
- 1:36covered it a lot. And clearly she feels like
- 1:39there's a lot of noise around this and she feels like it's
- 1:42being misconstrued. And I don't want to necessarily
- 1:45add to that, but I did want to like update you guys.
- 1:48She's made a new video basically saying that endorsing and voting
- 1:52for are very different and she wants people to understand that,
- 1:56which I actually really appreciated.
- 1:58She said essentially that publicly endorsing one candidate
- 2:01or another would be putting her name and essentially her entire
- 2:04project Chapel Roan like behind a candidate or behind a party.
- 2:09And she said both parties have policies that she does not
- 2:12support or does not agree with. And, you know, voting is very
- 2:16different than endorsing. So she said, yes, I'm voting for
- 2:18Kamala, but that doesn't mean that I will settle for what has
- 2:21been offered. And endorsing, she feels for
- 2:25herself would essentially be her settling for what is being
- 2:29offered to the American voters. But yes, that is the latest
- 2:33update on that. OK, The next story that I have
- 2:36for you guys is that Alex Earl has been accused of copying
- 2:40Becca Moore's podcast aesthetic in her new rebrand.
- 2:43So Alex Earl released the rebrand for season 2 of her
- 2:46podcast Hot Mess yesterday, and it's drawn a lot of criticism
- 2:50because the cover art and just the new aesthetic in general,
- 2:54it's very similar to Tick Tock creator Becca Moores popular
- 2:57podcast for the girls. We've actually never talked
- 3:01about Becca Moore before and I really like Becca Moore.
- 3:04She's dating Shannon Beveridge, who is like such an OG in the
- 3:08creator space. She's like an OG YouTube.
- 3:11And you guys know, I'm just like very entrenched in like lesbian
- 3:15TikTok. It's just one of my favorite
- 3:17niches on the app. So I'm so here for like when
- 3:20Becca and Shannon first announced they were dating, I
- 3:23was literally in shock. I was going insane.
- 3:25And I am always scared to say that I love a creator,
- 3:28especially a white creator because honestly more often than
- 3:33not we are eating our words unfortunately.
- 3:37But for now, what I know of her, I do really like Becca.
- 3:40OK so Alex's cover art is very similar to Becca's.
- 3:44They're both laying on their bed like talking on the phone.
- 3:48It's kind of like pin up style vibe, but like a little bit
- 3:52messier, very girly. It actually gives Sabrina
- 3:56Carpenter's current era. Like that's what it reminds me
- 3:59of both of those cover arts. However, others are saying that
- 4:03while yes, maybe it appears that Alex has taken some inspiration
- 4:07from Becca, Becca actually copied her podcast aesthetic and
- 4:11cover art and also the name for the girls from another podcast,
- 4:17which is obviously also called For the Girls.
- 4:19And the one that I found, I think this is the right 1.
- 4:22So it's by Victoria Alario. It says it has 2,000,000
- 4:26downloads and over 7500 followers on Instagram.
- 4:31The podcast is called for the girls podcast and the cover art
- 4:36from what I can tell is very similar.
- 4:37It is, I assume this is Victoria sitting on her bed talking on
- 4:41like an old school vintage phone rollers in her hair and her
- 4:46podcast says it's from 2021. I think when it comes to the the
- 4:49accusations of Alex copying Becca, I do think it's probably
- 4:54just more so that aesthetic and vibe is so popular right now.
- 4:58Like I said, it's very Sabrina Carpenter, and I wouldn't say
- 5:01that Sabrina Carpenter like made it trendy at the moment, but I
- 5:04would say that she has helped very much bring it back into the
- 5:09zeitgeist. Like that aesthetic, that whole
- 5:11vibe, it's been around for so long.
- 5:13It's not new. It is not something that Becca
- 5:15Moore made-up or that this girl Victoria made-up.
- 5:18But if I was Victoria, I would actually be a little bit pissed.
- 5:22There are just so few truly original ideas.
- 5:25But I will say, we just talked about what 2 days ago about like
- 5:28the blatant plagiarism that can happen in the creator space.
- 5:32So I don't know, maybe maybe Alex did take a little bit more
- 5:35than just some inspo from Becca's cover art.
- 5:39But it's not like Becca owns that aesthetic, that vibe.
- 5:44Anyone can kind of replicate it, put their own twist on it, which
- 5:46is essentially what Alex has done.
- 5:48OK. And the final story that I have
- 5:50for you guys is that Tana Mojo and Brooke Schofield are facing
- 5:53backlash for a video that they made about their Baltimore tour
- 5:57show. So since Brooks racist tweets
- 5:59emerged and she returned to the canceled podcast, fans have not
- 6:03been very happy with how the women have handled or talked
- 6:06about the situation. For example, in Brooks first
- 6:09episode back, Tanna wore AT shirt that said only God can
- 6:13cancel me. And this just felt very
- 6:15disrespectful to the hurt that Brooke caused, especially
- 6:18because Brooks tweet about Trayvon Martin was just so
- 6:22sinister and dark. And Tana had also done this like
- 6:26big spiel on her first episode on cancelled.
- 6:30Like after Brooks tweets surfaced, Tana came back on the
- 6:34podcast herself and did that whole like, monologue at the
- 6:37start. And she was like trying to take
- 6:39accountability for her past stuff and, you know, apologize
- 6:43for her past racist history and things like that.
- 6:47So then wearing this T-shirt, when Brooke came back, it was
- 6:50like, oh, OK. So like both of your apologies,
- 6:53it just felt so performative. It was like a slap in the face.
- 6:56It was like they were mocking what had happened, right?
- 7:00So since then, people have continued to have issues with
- 7:03how the women have handled things.
- 7:05And now they are under even more fire for a TikTok that they
- 7:08posted about their live podcast show in Baltimore.
- 7:12So in the video, they laugh and joke about how they don't have a
- 7:14fan base in Baltimore. And they've only sold like 27
- 7:18tickets to their show. Tana clarified in the caption
- 7:21that the show was actually 55% sold.
- 7:24But compared to I think most of their shows are usually sold
- 7:28out. So they were like joking about
- 7:30the fact that like they don't have a fan base in Baltimore and
- 7:33they couldn't believe it. So this also just felt so
- 7:35ignorant and people like literally can't believe that
- 7:39they posted it and that it's still up.
- 7:41Because if you know anything about Baltimore, as of 2024
- 7:45demographic stats, 61.25% of people that live in Baltimore
- 7:51are black or African American. So it's clear why their
- 7:56Baltimore show is not sold out. It's clear that, yeah, they
- 8:01probably don't have a big fan base in Baltimore because over
- 8:0560% of the city is reportedly black or African American.
- 8:10And Brooke was quite literally just involved in this giant
- 8:16scandal where all these horrible racist tweets came out.
- 8:20And then they've been like seemingly making light of the
- 8:23situation on their podcast. And it just feels like they
- 8:26haven't learned anything and they're not really taking it
- 8:28that seriously. So I'm going to read some
- 8:30comments from the TikTok. Ash 1111 said, are you insane to
- 8:35be posting this? This is dehumanizing.
- 8:38Do you see the demographics of Baltimore?
- 8:40Y'all will never change. Steph said hey, so this is
- 8:43insane. T said, oh girl, I thought at
- 8:47least Tana was smarter than this.
- 8:49And then hi :) said ha, I mean, we are living in the same
- 8:52universe. Like did we forget what came out
- 8:54like a month ago? So yeah, in general, people are
- 8:57very disappointed in how they have been given the second
- 9:01chance. I mean, Tana's been given like
- 9:02100 chances, but you know what I mean.
- 9:04They've been given this chance to properly take accountability,
- 9:10apologize, learn, change, and it feels like they're actually just
- 9:15kind of throwing all of this back in everyone's faces.
- 9:18But anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 9:21Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
