- 0:51Speaker 3: Some concerts and so if you don't have anything on
- 0:55Speaker 3: your schedule or your agenda enough, football does come into play.
- 0:58Speaker 4: It does come into play.
- 1:00Speaker 3: And I was talking, we always do a little bit
- 1:02Speaker 3: about it, and I watched a JV a JV team.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I watched Turk and grandson played last night. They played poker.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Unfortunately they lost, but he had a good game.
- 1:11Speaker 4: That's good.
- 1:12Speaker 3: But it's that time of year and you know the
- 1:15Speaker 3: kids is I mean, that's our generation. And I don't
- 1:19Speaker 3: know either the last show or the show before. We
- 1:22Speaker 3: were talking and I may mentioned I said, look, you
- 1:24Speaker 3: know this is back to school time and there is
- 1:28Speaker 3: students that is going to need automobiles.
- 1:30Speaker 4: We're talking about that.
- 1:31Speaker 3: It happens every year. And you know what better place
- 1:34Speaker 3: to go that Steven's Auto and Nitro. You can come
- 1:37Speaker 3: down to Nitro boom down days, taking a little football
- 1:40Speaker 3: and activities and they they're there, their staff, the new
- 1:44Speaker 3: signs up. It looks good. They had a very nice
- 1:46Speaker 3: sign made and put up at the dealership, replaced mine,
- 1:50Speaker 3: and they were kind enough to give me my old sign.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I put in a basement of a rental building. I
- 1:56Speaker 3: have just a store and I'm doing a little we're
- 2:00Speaker 3: work down at the farm. So one of the sides
- 2:05Speaker 3: of the sides that said Larry Dawson's out of sales
- 2:07Speaker 3: is going to be hung somewhere down at the sign
- 2:10Speaker 3: or down to farm. But I'm not.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Sure be going back we have.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I spoke last week Charles Steele and Land and Hughes
- 2:19Speaker 3: are the new salespeople at Stevens, along with Dakota Lee
- 2:23Speaker 3: and Jody Johnson. And I've noticed that they have been
- 2:26Speaker 3: bringing quite a bit of inventory. And I stand on
- 2:30Speaker 3: the fence and talk to my old guys and I
- 2:32Speaker 3: go over. I had to walk over yesterday. But everything
- 2:35Speaker 3: you think, the only thing has changed is me and
- 2:37Speaker 3: I'm just on the other side of the fence. So
- 2:39Speaker 3: if you want to see old Larry, come over, I'll
- 2:42Speaker 3: take you over and I'll do what I can. I
- 2:44Speaker 3: don't know the inventory like I used to know the inventory,
- 2:47Speaker 3: but I think I could still get it done right.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You know, there was a there was a business built
- 2:51Speaker 3: here for thirty seven years. And I'm so glad mister
- 2:54Speaker 3: Stevens and mister Barton they have came together and they've
- 2:57Speaker 3: come to Nitro and they've made a splash in town.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And it's, uh, I think it's all good. It's you know,
- 3:03Speaker 3: there's always that day when you go I think I'm
- 3:06Speaker 3: going to go do something else, and that they came
- 3:08Speaker 3: up on me last year and you know, we put
- 3:11Speaker 3: put some conversation together and got mister Peyton involved and
- 3:15Speaker 3: writted some things down and everything seems to be doing
- 3:19Speaker 3: very well. But when we spoke about the children, and
- 3:23Speaker 3: I always knew when back to school was coming on,
- 3:25Speaker 3: because you have the parents, you have the grandparents, you
- 3:28Speaker 3: even have the young people coming around, and they're starting
- 3:30Speaker 3: to look because who wants the who wants a car
- 3:33Speaker 3: any worse than the beginning driver? I mean, that's who
- 3:37Speaker 3: wants the car? Who doesn't want the car. The person's
- 3:40Speaker 3: got to provide us that the father, mother, grandparents, whoever,
- 3:45Speaker 3: because that is that is their first real leap away.
- 3:50Speaker 4: You know that's true. I'll tell you what real Briefly,
- 3:53Speaker 4: I think that the auto manufacturers would be served well.
- 4:00Speaker 4: And you might think this is weird, but I really
- 4:01Speaker 4: think it is to start running ad campaigns just about
- 4:04Speaker 4: the pleasure of driving, not necessarily to sell you in
- 4:07Speaker 4: their in particular car, not necessarily to tell you. I mean,
- 4:10Speaker 4: you can put elements of that in there, but I
- 4:12Speaker 4: think they need to recapture the spirit of driving for
- 4:14Speaker 4: younger people because what you're having in this country and
- 4:17Speaker 4: auto sales, I think that has been affected by this
- 4:20Speaker 4: is people driving later and later in life, and even
- 4:23Speaker 4: not getting their license when they're sixteen years. I mean,
- 4:24Speaker 4: when I was fifteen, went and got your learners. You
- 4:26Speaker 4: couldn't wait. As soon as you got your you could.
- 4:28Speaker 4: You took your driver's test, you got your driver's license,
- 4:30Speaker 4: and then you know, I went with and with my
- 4:32Speaker 4: dad and bought a six hundred dollars car. You know,
- 4:34Speaker 4: I mean it was like that. That's that's that was
- 4:36Speaker 4: like the right of passage into getting your your and
- 4:40Speaker 4: then you know as a big Capital just opened up,
- 4:42Speaker 4: So it was a big deal to get one of
- 4:43Speaker 4: the first placards to be able to park at Capital
- 4:45Speaker 4: and say, you know, I was one of the few
- 4:47Speaker 4: people was able to drive as a student up there.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I didn't have many friends until I got a car,
- 4:51Speaker 4: and then suddenly I had a lot of friend Capital.
- 4:54Speaker 3: That is your first leap to freedom, it is, yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 3: And you know when you when you get to cut,
- 5:00Speaker 3: when you get the chance to drive, you either your
- 5:03Speaker 3: car or your parents car, whoever car it is. You know,
- 5:06Speaker 3: that's the new experience. It's a it's a love hate affair,
- 5:11Speaker 3: you know. I think it takes the burdens off off
- 5:14Speaker 3: parents and grandparents of having to go get or take too.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Kim today she took the kids to school because Jenny
- 5:23Speaker 3: has had does have a test today. She's studying to
- 5:27Speaker 3: be a nurse. It was a big test and Kim said,
- 5:30Speaker 3: I'll take the kids and so that works out well.
- 5:32Speaker 3: But we have one coming up. Kayley's not that far
- 5:36Speaker 3: away from driving, so I know it's going to hit
- 5:39Speaker 3: me or it's not me where it's going to hit
- 5:42Speaker 3: all of us, just like it was when Silver, my
- 5:46Speaker 3: one that lives out west in Madison, lives in Columbia.
- 5:51Speaker 3: You know, when you first see them driving, oh gosh,
- 5:54Speaker 3: you know, your cringe. And then a few years go
- 5:56Speaker 3: by and you realize that, you know, that's just part
- 5:59Speaker 3: of it. You and I spoke earlier about Knoll City,
- 6:02Speaker 3: and you and I have an age difference, but not
- 6:05Speaker 3: drastic age difference, and we talked about Cano City and wow,
- 6:10Speaker 3: that was the car time. You drive up and down
- 6:12Speaker 3: to Cruise Park and that's where you met people. That's
- 6:16Speaker 3: where you got out and that you you know, boys
- 6:19Speaker 3: meet girls, girls meet boys, shine on cars and do things.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And that was really a great period of time.
- 6:26Speaker 4: It truly was because I was there as a young
- 6:28Speaker 4: younger man. My sister's older than me, so I hung
- 6:29Speaker 4: out with her and her friends a lot. So I
- 6:31Speaker 4: got to experience some of that a little bit, probably
- 6:33Speaker 4: before my agent. The crazy thing about that, I don't
- 6:36Speaker 4: think you could get such diverse people in an area
- 6:39Speaker 4: today like that that. I mean, there were sometimes kids
- 6:43Speaker 4: will be kids, you know, so there were kids that
- 6:45Speaker 4: would getting into scuffles or fights, but it was just
- 6:47Speaker 4: I mean, growing up normal type stuff, you know, the
- 6:50Speaker 4: other girlfriend stuff or whatever it might be. You know,
- 6:52Speaker 4: but generally speaking, there would be thousands of people in
- 6:55Speaker 4: Kansas City or several hundred at least whatever it was
- 6:57Speaker 4: driving the loop around, you know, from the mall all
- 7:00Speaker 4: the way down to what maybe mcmore McDonald's is what
- 7:02Speaker 4: pop Parker. So you turn around, you do the loop
- 7:04Speaker 4: over and over again, and there wasn't a lot of problems.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Police were there, but there wasn't a ton of stuff
- 7:09Speaker 4: going on. Man, if you had that situation today, it
- 7:12Speaker 4: would bring down into a hockey hockey match and a
- 7:14Speaker 4: fighting no time right.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Well, the other thing that I recall that being done
- 7:19Speaker 3: the vendors or the store owners. They did not discourage it.
- 7:24Speaker 3: In other words, there was.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Not oh no, no, they no, they did not at all.
- 7:28Speaker 4: They let people pop their hoods in the parking lot. Absolutely.
- 7:31Speaker 3: So you know, that's the kind of the car thing
- 7:33Speaker 3: of yesterday today. Being at my age and I watch
- 7:38Speaker 3: this was something that kind of was in my well,
- 7:41Speaker 3: was in my face. I was going, I don't know
- 7:44Speaker 3: why I got caught in the school. So at Winfield
- 7:46Speaker 3: I kind of know better. I think maybe it just
- 7:49Speaker 3: hadn't hit me. The school was back in session. But
- 7:52Speaker 3: in Winfield you have an elementary school that's down near
- 7:55Speaker 3: the bridge, and you have the middle school, which was
- 7:57Speaker 3: the high school when I attended in Middletown. Then you
- 8:01Speaker 3: have the high school up toward the end that I
- 8:04Speaker 3: live residing, and you have to stop. Then they have
- 8:08Speaker 3: police that allows all the students out and the school
- 8:11Speaker 3: bus this which is good because they do have to
- 8:14Speaker 3: pull out neither which direction they're going to go. So
- 8:16Speaker 3: that's that's encouraged. You know that, you know that the
- 8:19Speaker 3: police is there allowing our students to pull out safely.
- 8:23Speaker 3: And I was sitting there looking at cars. Obviously one
- 8:26Speaker 3: of my I'm a car guy. What I talk about
- 8:28Speaker 3: is how many students are driving cars And something that
- 8:33Speaker 3: hit me as I was sitting there watching, and I
- 8:36Speaker 3: tell you, I'm sure it's because of price point. And
- 8:40Speaker 3: when Chase and I was on here maybe two months ago,
- 8:43Speaker 3: I brought this up and he made mention to this
- 8:46Speaker 3: vehicle that I'm seeing a big uptick in and I
- 8:49Speaker 3: believe it is going to the youngsters. It's the Chevrolet Tracks.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Oh is that right?
- 8:54Speaker 3: And I think one of my best friends is Richard Tillson.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I know about a year or so ago, he's instrument sagent.
- 9:01Speaker 3: He had a daughter that was up and coming. She
- 9:03Speaker 3: goes to poker and he showed me a picture of it,
- 9:06Speaker 3: and I said, what is that And he said, Chevrolet
- 9:08Speaker 3: Tracks and he was telling me about it.
- 9:10Speaker 4: And I had that's a twenty thousand dollars car.
- 9:12Speaker 3: It's a price hit, the price point, and it's a
- 9:16Speaker 3: not I mean, it's a good it's a it's a
- 9:18Speaker 3: good looking vehicle. And I'd noticed at Winfield High School.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Now there wasn't lots and lots of them, but I
- 9:24Speaker 3: noticed a huge uptakes. I said, that's it. It's price point,
- 9:28Speaker 3: it fits well. And the younger, the young generation is
- 9:32Speaker 3: accepting the looks of it. You know, hey, I want
- 9:35Speaker 3: a car, let's go look. And it seems like that
- 9:38Speaker 3: is fitting the need for the parent and the need
- 9:41Speaker 3: for the youngster. And I'm sure there's more, but that
- 9:46Speaker 3: was the one vehicle that stood out, as I said,
- 9:49Speaker 3: at Winfield High School for the five to ten minute
- 9:52Speaker 3: as the students was leaving.
- 9:54Speaker 4: I mean I could see. I mean, it's a small crossover,
- 9:56Speaker 4: you know, I mean it's really not much bigger. I
- 9:59Speaker 4: mean those things aren't much bigger than like a cavalier
- 10:01Speaker 4: or something on the inside, you know, they.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Kind of raised and when Chase mentioned that, and he
- 10:09Speaker 3: was right. I don't know if I shared with Richard
- 10:13Speaker 3: had bought his daughter one, but I'm seeing that vehicle.
- 10:16Speaker 3: But you also have that Hyundai. They have that smaller
- 10:20Speaker 3: s u V and Ford has that. Just about all
- 10:23Speaker 3: of them have. But I think the Chevrolet Tracks was
- 10:26Speaker 3: the newest one. And I remember the Tracks is the
- 10:29Speaker 3: old tracks And when I saw it, I thought, is
- 10:31Speaker 3: that Blazer?
- 10:32Speaker 4: Is that?
- 10:33Speaker 3: What is that? Then I realized it was the Chevrolet Tracks.
- 10:36Speaker 3: So there's so many change it. And I bet you
- 10:39Speaker 3: in the back rooms that gentleman motors they had that
- 10:42Speaker 3: might what that young generation would gravitate too and give
- 10:48Speaker 3: it a price point where the parents says, we can
- 10:50Speaker 3: do that.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it's smart.
- 10:53Speaker 3: It's Smar the gentleman. That Steve Lannham, he's barber in Nitro.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Steve and I are friend's been friends for quite some time.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I go down there, don't have much hair, but I
- 11:04Speaker 3: let him cut around on him because I like just
- 11:06Speaker 3: to converse, just to talk to Steve, and he was
- 11:10Speaker 3: looking at one he is actually when it brought it
- 11:12Speaker 3: up to me a few weeks ago, he said, do
- 11:15Speaker 3: you have seen them tracks. That's well, actually I have
- 11:17Speaker 3: you know, and it seems like that young generation, Well
- 11:20Speaker 3: he went and looked at tracks. He end up with
- 11:22Speaker 3: a little Hyundai, I don't know, Santa Fe or something,
- 11:25Speaker 3: and it was maybe just a little bit more equipped.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I didn't ask him. And Steve's a taller man, and
- 11:30Speaker 3: I know that he's going to be driving as well
- 11:34Speaker 3: with he and his wife Michelle. So for whatever reason,
- 11:38Speaker 3: they end up with that vehicle. But there is that
- 11:41Speaker 3: segment now that I'm seeing, and we can't discount this
- 11:44Speaker 3: young generation because we have to supply them with the cars.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And I believe that by what I'm seeing in manufacturing
- 11:51Speaker 3: and by the numbers. I still read a lot, read
- 11:54Speaker 3: a lot in evenings watching the numbers or the trend
- 11:59Speaker 3: of is the market up down? I mean, it's kind
- 12:01Speaker 3: of like a broker, what's going on. In August there
- 12:05Speaker 3: was an uptick. Now there was two reasons. I think
- 12:07Speaker 3: back to school was a significant reason. But also we
- 12:13Speaker 3: had a server called city K that went down the
- 12:16Speaker 3: very end of June, maybe the very first July, and
- 12:21Speaker 3: there was about fifteen thousand dealerships that was affected. They
- 12:24Speaker 3: were hacked, you know, they got into the software and
- 12:27Speaker 3: basically shut them down. And there was stores around here
- 12:30Speaker 3: that really couldn't operate. You could go back to the
- 12:34Speaker 3: old days, you know, manuscript but the service and parts
- 12:38Speaker 3: and all that. So there was a period of time
- 12:40Speaker 3: maybe two week period, maybe stretched a little longer than
- 12:43Speaker 3: that that. I won't say they were shut down, but
- 12:46Speaker 3: they were all but shut down. So in that hit nationwide.
- 12:49Speaker 3: It it wasn't Charleston, West Virginia, it was nationwide. So
- 12:53Speaker 3: as they were able to get back on line, that
- 12:57Speaker 3: probably threw business over into August because basically you go
- 13:02Speaker 3: into get your car serviced or buy one, they weren't
- 13:06Speaker 3: able to supply your needs because this national for the
- 13:13Speaker 3: lack of better words, I guess I used the word haicked,
- 13:16Speaker 3: but they they they were put in a position that
- 13:21Speaker 3: they were vulnerable and the information out there now it's fixed.
- 13:25Speaker 3: There's uh, it's been fixed. It as what I read,
- 13:29Speaker 3: it was overseas that got into their server that that
- 13:33Speaker 3: infiltrated it and therefore held them hostage. And that you know,
- 13:39Speaker 3: the automobile business, the automobile dealers with the financing and
- 13:42Speaker 3: the parts and everything goes on. I mean, you know,
- 13:45Speaker 3: it's just like these screens. There's three in this room.
- 13:48Speaker 3: You know that I'm looking at a keyboard and something
- 13:50Speaker 3: behind you. You know, so it's all interconnected.
- 13:54Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:54Speaker 3: A little grimlin gets in there, we got it's uh,
- 14:00Speaker 3: do you do you in a radio world? Are you
- 14:02Speaker 3: all experiencing that? In as far as somebody in filtrating
- 14:06Speaker 3: your system and getting in and putting you in a
- 14:09Speaker 3: vulnerable position.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Like actual hackers. We had a some time ago we
- 14:15Speaker 4: had a incidental situation where it was like a fishing
- 14:20Speaker 4: link that had an employee had clicked on and it
- 14:24Speaker 4: didn't result in too much. It was any way trying
- 14:26Speaker 4: to access our systems or anything. And we have pretty
- 14:28Speaker 4: hard hard and security. We have a really good IT
- 14:30Speaker 4: team that shuts that those things down pretty well. They're
- 14:33Speaker 4: constantly monitoring that stuff. But it is a constant concern
- 14:37Speaker 4: that there's something like that and anymore, you know, the
- 14:40Speaker 4: like it used to be when the thought about hacking
- 14:44Speaker 4: people were so concerned about it. It was either targeted
- 14:47Speaker 4: hacking for something like SO security numbers or something that
- 14:49Speaker 4: would be massively available, which by the way, everybody SO
- 14:52Speaker 4: security number leaked a couple of weeks ago, or it
- 14:55Speaker 4: was targeted like you know, corporate warfare basically where you
- 14:59Speaker 4: get into competition whatever it might be. Now it's just
- 15:01Speaker 4: chaos agents, you know, it's just people looking for vulnerabilities
- 15:04Speaker 4: to see what they can get and then turn that
- 15:07Speaker 4: around into you know, whatever, ransom or whatever it might be.
- 15:09Speaker 4: So that stuff is terrible and we do a good
- 15:13Speaker 4: job with it. But the problem with vehicles that we're
- 15:15Speaker 4: seeing is I really wonder the more and more that
- 15:18Speaker 4: vehicles get reliant on Internet connectivity, computers and things like that.
- 15:23Speaker 4: I mean, I don't want to get totally panicky here,
- 15:25Speaker 4: but I mean how far away away from a hickermanl
- 15:27Speaker 4: to like walk up wheels or something. I mean, that's
- 15:29Speaker 4: what I'm concerned about.
- 15:30Speaker 3: I would think it would be a concerned and not
- 15:32Speaker 3: on the vehicle that was built maybe from today back correct, right,
- 15:37Speaker 3: it's the future exactly. You know, we've talked a little
- 15:41Speaker 3: bit about this subscription of options, and I think Tesla
- 15:49Speaker 3: is very involved in that. When I say involved, if
- 15:52Speaker 3: you want options such as a heated steering wheel, you know,
- 15:56Speaker 3: XM radio has been an option for quite some time.
- 15:58Speaker 3: They can turn you on, turn you off. If you
- 16:01Speaker 3: don't blame me, don't pay you just get in there.
- 16:03Speaker 3: And you know, I've traded and bought for a lot
- 16:07Speaker 3: of cars and surprising how many I'll get in and
- 16:11Speaker 3: XM still activated.
- 16:12Speaker 4: That is crazy, right.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Because it one would think because much new cars has
- 16:16Speaker 3: an XM time period six months to a year, that
- 16:20Speaker 3: it's basically free. So you trade your car in, you
- 16:24Speaker 3: kind of forget about it because you get in your
- 16:25Speaker 3: new car is already there. So I had a sight
- 16:28Speaker 3: out of mind, Well, the person bought your cars riding
- 16:30Speaker 3: on your ticket for a while.
- 16:32Speaker 4: I wondered to see I thought, frankly, the car that
- 16:34Speaker 4: I bought from you, I had XM and enabled in
- 16:38Speaker 4: it when I first got it, And in the back
- 16:39Speaker 4: of my mind, I was like, I'll let it go
- 16:41Speaker 4: into it runs out, you know. In the back of
- 16:43Speaker 4: my mind, I was like, now, is this something savvy
- 16:45Speaker 4: that like four does where they recognized like a transfer
- 16:47Speaker 4: of title or something and they reactivate you know, for
- 16:51Speaker 4: like two weeks or something like that. But it must
- 16:53Speaker 4: have been exactly what you said, like a subscription that
- 16:54Speaker 4: somebody else had that was running out. You know, it
- 16:56Speaker 4: was the last couple weeks of it, because it only
- 16:58Speaker 4: lasted you know, three weeks or something and then it
- 17:00Speaker 4: went away. But I was like, oh great, I have
- 17:02Speaker 4: exam it came with the vehicle. What do you know
- 17:04Speaker 4: now I'm not so lucky.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Well, you take their cell phones and the technology is
- 17:08Speaker 3: in the cell phone that you and I have near us,
- 17:11Speaker 3: and then you apply that to the automobile. I don't
- 17:14Speaker 3: know how much communications going on and off. I had
- 17:17Speaker 3: a situation one time came up that I think there
- 17:22Speaker 3: was some dishonesty being done and not on my end.
- 17:26Speaker 3: And when I called her hand, I said, well, let
- 17:28Speaker 3: me just tell you this. I'm gonna take this vehicle
- 17:30Speaker 3: down and pay you, the local dealer of this manufacturer,
- 17:33Speaker 3: to bring up their black box and we'll just see
- 17:36Speaker 3: who's right. And they changed her team. Whoops, because there
- 17:42Speaker 3: was a lot of things that they can go and recreate.
- 17:45Speaker 3: You don't think these crashes, these crash tests out here
- 17:48Speaker 3: where somebody's in it in an accident that I see
- 17:52Speaker 3: attorneys adversements from TVs and they talk about big trucks, Well,
- 17:56Speaker 3: big trucks, little trucks, cars, they all have something in there.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Taken go back and see what the RPM, see what
- 18:02Speaker 3: the speed was, see your conditions, and so you know
- 18:06Speaker 3: you think you got by with it, well you may
- 18:08Speaker 3: not got by with it. So there is a lot
- 18:10Speaker 3: of information, you know, involved in these new cars. It's
- 18:14Speaker 3: it's if we if the John Q public knew, it
- 18:18Speaker 3: might surprise you.
- 18:19Speaker 4: That's good to Larry Dawson is here from Larry Awson's

- 20:07Speaker 2: This update is brought to you by Fourth Avenue Financial.
- 20:10Speaker 2: A good retirement takes planning. Let's get started today.
- 20:24Speaker 4: You're listening to ask the expert Wcsess Woods Charleston Arry
- 20:27Speaker 4: Aawson to the studio with this joining you give Larry
- 20:29Speaker 4: calls Razier four three fifty eight threes are four three
- 20:31Speaker 4: four five fifty to fifty eight, can text over any
- 20:33Speaker 4: questions you have threes aer four now three five fives
- 20:35Speaker 4: years your eight. We talked about it many times on
- 20:37Speaker 4: this program before. How and this started even when you
- 20:41Speaker 4: and I first started doing the show together. And it's
- 20:43Speaker 4: just gotten worse. How that economy of the second car,
- 20:47Speaker 4: the kid car, whatever it might be, really has changed,
- 20:50Speaker 4: not just because society has changed, so of course A
- 20:54Speaker 4: four thousand dollars. Car is going to be more expensive
- 20:56Speaker 4: now than it was twenty years ago or thirty years ago.
- 20:58Speaker 4: But it's changed in that whole set of you know,
- 21:02Speaker 4: modestly high mileage cars that you can turn over and
- 21:05Speaker 4: give to you know, your your kid, or to use
- 21:08Speaker 4: as a second car or something like that. Those cars
- 21:09Speaker 4: virtually don't exist anymore.
- 21:11Speaker 3: That's a tough fight. And let me tell you what
- 21:15Speaker 3: I see. You're not gonna give your child to use
- 21:20Speaker 3: many van They're not.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Gonna take it.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yeah, right, They're just not gonna take it. So we
- 21:25Speaker 3: have a change of commodity, and we have a change
- 21:29Speaker 3: of the future drivers. You know, it's it's it's surprising
- 21:34Speaker 3: that what I see in these high schools of what
- 21:39Speaker 3: is being driven, they're pretty darn nice car. And once
- 21:43Speaker 3: again I just happen to catch at at Winfield High School.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Get out down the street here there's one.
- 21:50Speaker 3: I mean, there's some pretty darn nice So somebody's buying
- 21:54Speaker 3: these cars. And and you know that that's where I've
- 21:57Speaker 3: noticed beside me that the inventory that Jody has been displaying,
- 22:03Speaker 3: you know, it is a higher dollar inventory than what
- 22:05Speaker 3: I have, but it is very very nice inventory. And
- 22:08Speaker 3: they with them being a multi franchise, so that's where
- 22:13Speaker 3: I was not. I was a non franchise. So my
- 22:16Speaker 3: service department had to know everything about and we and
- 22:20Speaker 3: we had to rely upon second hand source for information.
- 22:25Speaker 3: The nice thing about Steven's Auto Group, they're four dealer there,
- 22:28Speaker 3: Chrysler dealer, their Chevrolet dealer, and they're Met's Abusy dealer.
- 22:31Speaker 3: So they're proprietary information for late model they have and
- 22:36Speaker 3: that's that's significant, especially if you need some warranty work.
- 22:40Speaker 3: You know, you buy something late model with warranty work.
- 22:42Speaker 3: They have this service department there that's attached to the store.
- 22:47Speaker 3: And as the changing of the guard happens, in the
- 22:49Speaker 3: changing of inventory, you know, people ask me what you
- 22:53Speaker 3: just said, what can you find? You know, the junior
- 22:55Speaker 3: and missing because I didn't expire. I just retired. But
- 23:01Speaker 3: I've got a text right now a friend of mine
- 23:03Speaker 3: is wanting to trade his suburban and he's asked me
- 23:05Speaker 3: about if I know someone at a GMC store. I
- 23:08Speaker 3: get asked that daily. And you know, as I grew
- 23:12Speaker 3: a little older, started aging, and the young generation came
- 23:16Speaker 3: in to play, you know that gap. I might know
- 23:20Speaker 3: their father, I might even know their grandfather, but I
- 23:23Speaker 3: don't have that communication with him like I did when
- 23:26Speaker 3: we go back just ten or twelve years. These two
- 23:28Speaker 3: gentlemen that I mentioned, Charles Steele and Charles Lannon and
- 23:33Speaker 3: down at Steven's Auto Nitro, they're much younger men. So's
- 23:37Speaker 3: Dakoda Lee. Now Jody, I would say, Jody is forty
- 23:41Speaker 3: something and we just communicate really well. And these two
- 23:45Speaker 3: or these three that I mentioned, they're always very friendly.
- 23:47Speaker 3: If I happen to walk over and we see, you know,
- 23:49Speaker 3: we still chick chat or I see them out. But
- 23:52Speaker 3: it's different, you know, it's different. We just go back
- 23:55Speaker 3: one decade, ten years, and I'll bet you if you
- 23:58Speaker 3: would interview some lawyers, maybe some doctors, some attorneys asked
- 24:05Speaker 3: mister Peyton tomorrow, you know he he would probably tell
- 24:08Speaker 3: you the same thing he is saying, which is a
- 24:11Speaker 3: good thing. I'm more youthful of the attorneys coming in
- 24:16Speaker 3: because we're aging out. You know, we once again, we
- 24:19Speaker 3: didn't expire. I mean, you know, we expired. We didn't.
- 24:22Speaker 3: We didn't expire. We retired. But our customer base is
- 24:26Speaker 3: the same way. You know, our customer base kind of
- 24:29Speaker 3: follows me and they're looking for certain items, and so
- 24:33Speaker 3: I just refer them back, you know. And that's what
- 24:35Speaker 3: a lot of people look for, is that referral reference networking.
- 24:39Speaker 3: If you don't think making a connection or a network
- 24:44Speaker 3: with someone. Last Thursday, I woke up, actually last Wednesday evening,
- 24:49Speaker 3: I went to bed with no air conditioning downstairs in
- 24:53Speaker 3: my house and it was ninety nine degrees. It was
- 24:56Speaker 3: very hot outside. I don't know what was inside, but
- 24:58Speaker 3: it was hot. I've spoke of this person before. His
- 25:02Speaker 3: name is Roy Lines, Roy Lines Heating and Cooling. I've
- 25:04Speaker 3: sold them many many vehicles. I text him at six
- 25:08Speaker 3: a m. Friday morning. I said, Roy, when you get this,
- 25:12Speaker 3: will you give me a call? Bang? Phone call, Roy,
- 25:16Speaker 3: I didn't mean to wake you up. He said, I'm
- 25:18Speaker 3: not a You didn't wake me up. I'm up. I said, well,
- 25:21Speaker 3: here's my situation. What nine point thirty? He texted me, said,
- 25:25Speaker 3: you're fixed?
- 25:26Speaker 4: What?
- 25:27Speaker 3: But that is a connection. I never asked Price. I
- 25:31Speaker 3: just had a contact, and I will never burn a
- 25:34Speaker 3: bridge over Price. When you've got that contact in a relationship,
- 25:39Speaker 3: establish it with a car person. And once you do it,
- 25:42Speaker 3: it's much easier this second time, around, the third time, around,
- 25:45Speaker 3: the fourth time around, it is much much easier because
- 25:49Speaker 3: everyone has a price. Everybody's got a price. One might
- 25:54Speaker 3: be a little higher, one might be a little lower.
- 25:56Speaker 3: But if you're connecting with that person and there listening,
- 26:00Speaker 3: like the story you told me off air, somebody wasn't
- 26:03Speaker 3: listening to your mother, I would heard those figures if
- 26:06Speaker 3: I was that.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Person, definitely would have. It wasn't the easiest sell of.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Your life because your mother told him what she wanted
- 26:12Speaker 3: and where she wanted to be. They didn't hear that,
- 26:15Speaker 3: not a bit. And that's something about the young generation.
- 26:18Speaker 3: I will tell anybody that's getting in any field, listen
- 26:23Speaker 3: to what your customer has to say. Listen. Chases. A
- 26:27Speaker 3: very young man's involved in Steven's auto group. I've known
- 26:30Speaker 3: him since he was a little boy, not really well
- 26:32Speaker 3: knew his dad, but I'm sure his father, Dave, taught
- 26:35Speaker 3: him how to listen because he will talk to you.
- 26:39Speaker 3: And you see, he's surprisingly young compared to the vocabulary
- 26:44Speaker 3: and how he converses with someone. And that's an extremely
- 26:50Speaker 3: rare trait, but it's a very valuable trait. And that's
- 26:55Speaker 3: your mother did right. She went down and presented what
- 26:57Speaker 3: she had and exactly what she wanted to spend. The
- 27:00Speaker 3: first person didn't list to your mother, the second person
- 27:03Speaker 3: excel and she's driving a new.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Car that took them all with like two hours to
- 27:08Speaker 4: make a sale. Was hard to discover what she wanted. Man,
- 27:10Speaker 4: she doesn't mess around.
- 27:11Speaker 3: It is so easy when you walk in and you
- 27:14Speaker 3: want to buy an automobile. And most consumers I have
- 27:18Speaker 3: found have done a lot of legwork compared to just
- 27:21Speaker 3: ten years ago because the information is provided right in
- 27:25Speaker 3: front of you. Now, don't get lost in that high
- 27:28Speaker 3: wave information and try to read all the bads and
- 27:30Speaker 3: goods and then you're confused. Set your mind on something
- 27:34Speaker 3: a price range, and narrow it down really close and
- 27:38Speaker 3: share that with your salesperson. And you know what, just
- 27:43Speaker 3: like your mother, if it doesn't work, excuse yourself and
- 27:46Speaker 3: go find someone that does. And that's what your mother.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Did, and it's the best way to go about things
- 27:51Speaker 4: that it's not like that and just talking more generically.
- 27:55Speaker 4: But when you're looking for something like, you're not looking
- 27:58Speaker 4: for somebody to give you something for read. You're looking
- 28:01Speaker 4: for somebody to give you good service, and you're willing
- 28:03Speaker 4: to also compensate them for that service. But just listen,
- 28:05Speaker 4: listen to what I'm saying, what we're doing, and you
- 28:07Speaker 4: can make the sell. When I did mortgages for years,
- 28:09Speaker 4: there was a guy that I hooked up with for
- 28:11Speaker 4: years and years and years. He was an investment He
- 28:14Speaker 4: had all kinds of investment properties, and I mean forty
- 28:16Speaker 4: of them or more. He had tons of them. He
- 28:19Speaker 4: was a landlorder that did this and he got into
- 28:22Speaker 4: when the time was right of financing a lot of
- 28:24Speaker 4: those properties. Michigan has really lacks land contract rules, and
- 28:27Speaker 4: so he was selling a lot of them when land
- 28:29Speaker 4: contract and then financing people out of them. And we
- 28:32Speaker 4: hooked up and I understood what he was trying to do,
- 28:34Speaker 4: and I was pretty good at the type of deals
- 28:36Speaker 4: that he wanted to put together. He had trouble with
- 28:38Speaker 4: other banks and the banks structuring the deals that he
- 28:40Speaker 4: was trying to do. So came we met. We came
- 28:43Speaker 4: up with was like, this is what I'll do. I'll
- 28:45Speaker 4: charge you this percentage when every deal that you send me,
- 28:48Speaker 4: never more, nevertheless, this will be the percentage that I
- 28:51Speaker 4: charge you. You just give me all your business. He
- 28:53Speaker 4: was like, you can get them done. That's an agree.
- 28:55Speaker 4: So he never questioned me I charged him it was
- 28:57Speaker 4: a competitive amount. He may have mailed a shop me
- 28:59Speaker 4: and get it for that. Nobody else had my knowledge
- 29:02Speaker 4: and I knew how to do his deals. I had
- 29:03Speaker 4: all of his stuff on record, and so when he
- 29:05Speaker 4: wanted something done, he could call me with a property.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I could turn it around in a week and he
- 29:08Speaker 4: was willing to pay me for that because it was
- 29:10Speaker 4: a good service. And that's that's a good relationship that
- 29:12Speaker 4: you have with somebody. I wasn't ripping him off. I
- 29:14Speaker 4: was giving him the service that he wanted.
- 29:16Speaker 3: That's all, and that's fair. People that knowse Larry Dawson
- 29:20Speaker 3: will tell you I've said this many times. I don't
- 29:23Speaker 3: want anything free. I want to pay you. I want
- 29:27Speaker 3: to pay you because I want a service done at
- 29:30Speaker 3: a value, because you know when you go in and
- 29:33Speaker 3: go you know I don't charge you, I'll do it free. Well,
- 29:36Speaker 3: I might want you back, you know, I want I
- 29:39Speaker 3: want to pay you. I want to have an other
- 29:41Speaker 3: thing that most people know. I won't pay you really
- 29:44Speaker 3: soon too. So once you have that relationship, you come
- 29:47Speaker 3: in and I can guarantee you if you go down
- 29:49Speaker 3: and you asked Joey or you explain to Jody, what
- 29:52Speaker 3: you want, Jody Johnson, He'll find it for you because
- 29:55Speaker 3: he I mean, I just That's why I think we
- 29:57Speaker 3: picked up on each other's personality swell is that we communicate,
- 30:02Speaker 3: you know, and we can sit here and talk about
- 30:04Speaker 3: a lot of different things. And I watched him get
- 30:07Speaker 3: himself involved with you know, the customers. But that is
- 30:11Speaker 3: if that has to go both ways, and that's what
- 30:13Speaker 3: I've I used to bring cut people in out and
- 30:17Speaker 3: set them down and I said, look, don't be scared.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Tell me what you're looking because I may not have it,
- 30:22Speaker 3: and I'm not going to force anything up on you
- 30:24Speaker 3: and waste your time. I'm a limited dealer now, where
- 30:28Speaker 3: once again, Steven's Auto Group is not a limited dealer.
- 30:31Speaker 3: They have multiple locations with multiple inventory. I did not
- 30:34Speaker 3: have that luxury, so I had to sell what I had.
- 30:37Speaker 3: But I did not try to oversell or under sell.
- 30:40Speaker 3: If I didn't have it, I didn't have it. I
- 30:42Speaker 3: was one of the I'm still probably one of the
- 30:44Speaker 3: best bird dogs out there. And I don't even charge.
- 30:46Speaker 3: I just said to look, go see this person, or
- 30:48Speaker 3: I'll call. The other day, I got a phone call
- 30:52Speaker 3: from a friend that was actually he's my stockbroker. He
- 30:55Speaker 3: was struggling trying to get communications going with another dealer.
- 31:00Speaker 3: They just wouldn't reply with what he needed was a
- 31:02Speaker 3: difference figure. And he said, Larry, I've tempted this several times.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And I said, you know, I hear this story. I said,
- 31:09Speaker 3: let me make one phone call. Well, forty eight hours later,
- 31:12Speaker 3: the deal was done. It got done. He just needed
- 31:16Speaker 3: a little push. And that's where you know once again,
- 31:20Speaker 3: my actually I did it free. But I do it free.
- 31:23Speaker 3: But sometimes when a buyer and a seller, they're just
- 31:27Speaker 3: not communicating. And I blame these cell phones and social
- 31:31Speaker 3: media and computers. You know, they have information. They will
- 31:36Speaker 3: bring you a little closer, just like I happen to
- 31:39Speaker 3: know Roy Line's cell phone number. And I said, when
- 31:42Speaker 3: you have a chance, will you give me a call.
- 31:45Speaker 3: I did not expect a six oh one am call,
- 31:48Speaker 3: and I did not expect a nine point thirty service
- 31:52Speaker 3: call and repair it. Capacitor popped in my compressor. He said,
- 31:57Speaker 3: they're popping like crazy. Well, I kind of know what
- 32:00Speaker 3: a capacitor is. I know nothing about it. I'm not
- 32:03Speaker 3: gonna touch.
- 32:03Speaker 4: Yeah, is it a flex capacitor? I mean, jigga watches.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Well, it's that's on that wall when it popped in,
- 32:11Speaker 3: and when when they popped the compressors don't come on.
- 32:13Speaker 3: And when compressors don't come on, you do not have
- 32:16Speaker 3: gold there. So I do know that much about it
- 32:19Speaker 3: of my days years ago installing these units with my father.
- 32:23Speaker 3: But they have changed so much. It's like raising the
- 32:26Speaker 3: hood of the car. I do not know. You know,
- 32:29Speaker 3: it's a search for me to And a lot of
- 32:31Speaker 3: these cars do not have dipsticks. We were I was
- 32:33Speaker 3: talking to a gentleman last night football game. He was
- 32:36Speaker 3: talking about his daughter's car for cylinder hin day this
- 32:39Speaker 3: and that was a little lower and oil. And since
- 32:41Speaker 3: Steve stopped, don't don't, don't worry about it, I said,
- 32:44Speaker 3: if it's not dripping for cylinders, I have noticed they
- 32:48Speaker 3: will use a little oil between oil changes. When I
- 32:52Speaker 3: say used, you're not gonna see it burning, you know,
- 32:55Speaker 3: if it's not dripping. Obviously, But I had this conversation
- 32:59Speaker 3: with the I think a pretty darn good mechanic and
- 33:02Speaker 3: he said, these four cellers, they'll use a little oil. Now,
- 33:05Speaker 3: will they run dry between intervals? If your intervals is
- 33:08Speaker 3: what they're supposed to be, No, but he said it's
- 33:11Speaker 3: not it's it's not uncommon, and so I said, I
- 33:15Speaker 3: assured him because he was thinking about helping his daughter
- 33:18Speaker 3: go trade. And I said, I did you know, just
- 33:20Speaker 3: pump your brakes there and I said, that's not real uncommon.
- 33:24Speaker 3: So I said, once you just get to old Change
- 33:26Speaker 3: and then watch it. I said, problem is a lot
- 33:28Speaker 3: of these cars don't have dipsticks. There's the problem. And
- 33:33Speaker 3: I think there is an internal way to go in
- 33:35Speaker 3: with your gauges. I do not know how to do
- 33:38Speaker 3: it to have it checked as far as the levels.
- 33:42Speaker 3: I was driving a vehicle not too long ago that
- 33:45Speaker 3: the old luck light came on. Well back in my day,
- 33:49Speaker 3: you put over stocked right, yeah, exactly, so I.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Bottle thing would come on. You're like, what the heck?
- 33:56Speaker 3: So I was very near, Actually I had Ronnie Gentleman
- 34:00Speaker 3: helps me. We were very near an old change place.
- 34:04Speaker 3: I said, will you just take this and get to
- 34:05Speaker 3: old Change then we'll know. And I said, ask them
- 34:09Speaker 3: how much oil they took out versus how much it
- 34:11Speaker 3: put in. It was very minimum out, but it indicated
- 34:15Speaker 3: on a light, which is a good thing. Now I
- 34:17Speaker 3: learned something, and by day that old Luck come on
- 34:20Speaker 3: you unterstand.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Right, yeah, because you'd have smoke pouring out of.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Your head exactly. Evidently, when I was driving, this was
- 34:25Speaker 3: indicating that the level was not full. Now, there's a
- 34:28Speaker 3: difference between full and empty, right, you know the old days,
- 34:31Speaker 3: like you and I, I think you had a Dodge's
- 34:33Speaker 3: dark shiplet Vega. Well that old light came on, you
- 34:38Speaker 3: probably were in drove.
- 34:39Speaker 4: It was different too, because you could basically sit in
- 34:41Speaker 4: the engine and work on it if you want to do.
- 34:42Speaker 4: There was so much room you could do whatever you want.
- 34:44Speaker 4: I'm not a mechanic man, but I could work on
- 34:46Speaker 4: that car. There was so much room, and everything was big.
- 34:48Speaker 4: I could turn a couple of bolts or whatever. You know,
- 34:50Speaker 4: you can't even get into these things anymore. Heck, I
- 34:52Speaker 4: used to carry around I may have mentioned this last time,
- 34:54Speaker 4: and I used to carry around a gapp or for
- 34:55Speaker 4: spark plugs on my dann key chain. Man. You know,
- 34:57Speaker 4: you can't even see those in auto stores anymore. I
- 34:59Speaker 4: was looking for one the other day. I was just curious.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I didn't even see one who used a spark plugs
- 35:04Speaker 4: unless you're on your blond moower.
- 35:05Speaker 3: I guess right, remember points I used to set the points. Yeah, absolutely,
- 35:09Speaker 3: I have some tools that I received I think my
- 35:13Speaker 3: senior year in high school from a Tag Gay and
- 35:16Speaker 3: I believe you or Tag Gay and Dodge was years ago.
- 35:19Speaker 3: I think it was down to trust Low Virginia somewhere,
- 35:22Speaker 3: and he was a mclion mechanic and when he now
- 35:25Speaker 3: he was much much older. He was older than my parents.
- 35:28Speaker 3: When he passed, his wife knew I fooled with cars
- 35:32Speaker 3: and gave me his toolbox. I still have relatively a
- 35:36Speaker 3: lot of those tools. Well, I'm doing some remodeling down farm,
- 35:39Speaker 3: building another garage so I could just unclutter. Well, I'm
- 35:43Speaker 3: starting to go through my tools. I came up on
- 35:45Speaker 3: those where you set points. Now, I'm not gonna pitch him.
- 35:49Speaker 3: I'm gonna keep him so I can have a conversation
- 35:53Speaker 3: maybe with you or somebody high age, because the younger
- 35:56Speaker 3: generation that on know they're gonna look at is that
- 35:59Speaker 3: a figurenaut man.
- 36:01Speaker 4: I remember going to an autopart store and shopping for
- 36:04Speaker 4: the best oil filter changer that had like the best
- 36:09Speaker 4: grip and like had the best position where you get
- 36:11Speaker 4: in between or whatever. It's like. That was an important
- 36:13Speaker 4: purchase at one point in time, like getting the right
- 36:15Speaker 4: oil change filter that you could use to get into
- 36:17Speaker 4: whatever configuration you're engine or whatever it is. I mean,
- 36:20Speaker 4: I don't mean to be like all old man and stuff,
- 36:22Speaker 4: but I mean I guarantee you that most of the
- 36:24Speaker 4: people that I run into on a daily basis around
- 36:26Speaker 4: here has never changed the oil filter in their car.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Well, in that toolbox once again, I found it was
- 36:31Speaker 3: like a.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Strap exactly put the handle on it and when.
- 36:34Speaker 3: You pulled it it tight and a strap up to
- 36:36Speaker 3: the circumference of the oil filter.
- 36:38Speaker 4: And you could ratchet the theory.
- 36:39Speaker 3: You go.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and sometimes put in the car you'd have to
- 36:42Speaker 4: have a handle positioned a certain way to be able
- 36:44Speaker 4: to get to it. And so I would have to
- 36:45Speaker 4: go and buy one that I knew where the handle
- 36:47Speaker 4: would fit and I could get the right traction on.
- 36:49Speaker 3: It.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Was a big important purchase at the time for a
- 36:51Speaker 4: young man that changed the oil in his car all
- 36:53Speaker 4: the time.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Well, old school technology. You know. It's like I've seen
- 36:57Speaker 3: people take straps when you've laid loose, use the beam
- 37:00Speaker 3: on your the bead on your tire and you need
- 37:03Speaker 3: to inflate it, and the airs coming around the rim
- 37:06Speaker 3: if you ratchet strap that thing and squeeze it in.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Now people use belts on smaller wheels. You can do
- 37:13Speaker 3: that on a on a vehicles will tire you and
- 37:16Speaker 3: pull it very tight. You'll form a bead again, so
- 37:19Speaker 3: when you shoot the air to it, it will it
- 37:22Speaker 3: will inflate.
- 37:22Speaker 4: It makes a lot of sense. But well, I love
- 37:26Speaker 4: this stuff. I love talking about this stuff, and you
