- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's do this.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's the Inside Scoop with FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal. Ken,
- 0:09Speaker 2: let's start with your latest column in The Athletic on Bobaschett.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I mean, we've documented the Mets and their wild rollercoaster
- 0:16Speaker 2: season plenty, but what about Bo specifically? Should we know
- 0:20Speaker 2: in terms of how much heat he's feeling playing in
- 0:22Speaker 2: New York City and not living anywhere near up to
- 0:25Speaker 2: the contract he's making so much money this year.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Well, first of all, he had a good night last night,
- 0:30Speaker 3: so maybe he's starting to come out of it. But
- 0:33Speaker 3: the story is about just the different things that he
- 0:37Speaker 3: has faced since signing the contract with the Mets three years,
- 0:40Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty six million with the two opt outs,
- 0:43Speaker 3: And no one is going to feel sorry for him.
- 0:46Speaker 3: We all understand that, and he understands that. But at
- 0:49Speaker 3: the same time, it is worth noting, in my opinion,
- 0:54Speaker 3: all the things that he is facing here, and it's
- 0:56Speaker 3: a lot. It really is new team in a bigger market,
- 1:00Speaker 3: not just the bigger market, the biggest market, New York,
- 1:02Speaker 3: which is always, not always, but often difficult for players
- 1:07Speaker 3: who come there when they haven't been in that environment before.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And then he had the pressure of changing positions, going
- 1:13Speaker 3: to third base, which he had never played before and
- 1:16Speaker 3: now switching back to shortstop, and the pressure to perform
- 1:20Speaker 3: when so many of their hitters are injured. So you
- 1:24Speaker 3: put that all together, combine it with him being one
- 1:26Speaker 3: of the most unlucky hitters in baseball throughout the first
- 1:30Speaker 3: six or seven weeks of the season. Then he's chasing results.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Then there's the contract with the opt out at the
- 1:36Speaker 3: end of this year, where he's probably thinking it's a
- 1:39Speaker 3: weak free agent class. I'm going to be twenty nine.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I can crush it even more in the open market.
- 1:45Speaker 3: There's pressure there as well, So again, no one's gonna
- 1:47Speaker 3: have any sympathy for this. I get it, and we
- 1:49Speaker 3: all get it. But at the same time, we have
- 1:53Speaker 3: seen countless times before free agent hitters in particular, but
- 1:57Speaker 3: also pitchers struggle when they change team for big money,
- 2:01Speaker 3: and we saw it earlier this season with Kyle Tucker.
- 2:03Speaker 3: He's now starting to heat up. We have seen it
- 2:05Speaker 3: again countless times throughout recent history through a free agent era,
- 2:11Speaker 3: and it's only amplified when a player is joining a
- 2:14Speaker 3: New York team.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Ken it's the first time though Bobaschet has switched teams,
- 2:19Speaker 4: and I keep saying this over and over again. The
- 2:20Speaker 4: first time you change teams is the hardest. And then
- 2:23Speaker 4: you throw on top of that new position, New York,
- 2:27Speaker 4: all the things, big money, all the things that bobash
- 2:30Speaker 4: has had to go through.
- 2:33Speaker 5: I think he'll be okay. You mentioned that he's coming
- 2:35Speaker 5: out of it. What are the Mets. Are the Mets
- 2:36Speaker 5: talking about this or is this.
- 2:37Speaker 4: One of those things that's, Hey, we're not going to
- 2:39Speaker 4: talk about this because it's less we talk about it
- 2:41Speaker 4: the more it goes away.
- 2:43Speaker 3: The Mets feel that he's going to hit. Really everyone
- 2:46Speaker 3: in the industry, just as you just said, Aja feels
- 2:48Speaker 3: he's going to hit. He has always hit before. And Mendoza,
- 2:52Speaker 3: the manager, Carlos Mendoz, had a quote last night basically
- 2:55Speaker 3: saying he'll be there at the end, the numbers will
- 2:57Speaker 3: be there, and that's probably true. But at the same time,
- 3:01Speaker 3: it has been, without question, a difficult transition. And one
- 3:04Speaker 3: thing I brought up in the article that actually someone
- 3:07Speaker 3: pointed out to me and then I checked into his
- 3:10Speaker 3: attack angle, which is a statcast stat it's the flattest
- 3:16Speaker 3: swing in Major League Baseball, and it has resulted in
- 3:19Speaker 3: him hitting more ground balls than he ever has in
- 3:22Speaker 3: his career, not getting the ball enough in the air.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Maybe there's a mechanical adjustment that needs to happen, or
- 3:27Speaker 3: maybe he just has to have a few good nights,
- 3:29Speaker 3: get his confidence back and start being bobaschet again. I
- 3:32Speaker 3: expect that to happen, him to be Bobashette again. It's
- 3:35Speaker 3: just been so far, at least a rocky road.
- 3:39Speaker 6: One of the things you wrote in the article was
- 3:40Speaker 6: about how, yes, he switched positions, Yes, new York, yes,
- 3:44Speaker 6: pressure of contract, new team, all that stuff. But he
- 3:46Speaker 6: switched positions and then he went back to shortstop when
- 3:50Speaker 6: Ronnie Maurisio went down and Lindor went down. But he
- 3:54Speaker 6: was very honest, and even Marcus Simeon brought it up too,
- 3:57Speaker 6: that it's hard, it's a more demanding position and could
- 4:02Speaker 6: affect his hitting. But then Bo said, ah, maybe that
- 4:05Speaker 6: doesn't affect my hitting. I've been doing it my entire career.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Do you feel like he was being honest about that?
- 4:11Speaker 6: Do you feel like it was something that was just
- 4:13Speaker 6: added to it and then it said okay, yeah, I
- 4:16Speaker 6: guess it's not really affecting because this is where I'm
- 4:18Speaker 6: more comfortable.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I would say everything combined has affected him. Now. What
- 4:25Speaker 3: that question was specifically, was okay going back to shortstop.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Marcus Simeon said, frankly, it's harder to hit as a shortstop,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and bo that's what he said. No, I'm not going
- 4:34Speaker 3: to agree with that. There's definitely more demands placed than you.
- 4:37Speaker 3: We agreed with Marcus Simeon on that aspect of it,
- 4:40Speaker 3: but he said, I have always played shortstop, always hit
- 4:43Speaker 3: as a shortstop. That is not the problem here, but
- 4:47Speaker 3: the initial having to learn a new position third base,
- 4:50Speaker 3: and then having to go back thirty three games, thirty
- 4:54Speaker 3: four games into the season, it just adds another element
- 4:58Speaker 3: to the degree of difficulty here. And again, this is
- 5:02Speaker 3: an extremely talented player, one of the great hitters in
- 5:05Speaker 3: the game. But players often have a hard time in
- 5:09Speaker 3: these circumstances. And the thing that we can't stress enough
- 5:13Speaker 3: and when you guys talk about it and I talk
- 5:15Speaker 3: about it, and it's sometimes hard for fans to understand,
- 5:19Speaker 3: but the game is so difficult, it's so trying on
- 5:23Speaker 3: players mentally, it gets in your head. And I would
- 5:27Speaker 3: say that all of this combined has probably had somewhat
- 5:31Speaker 3: of a toll On Boba Schett.
- 5:34Speaker 5: True Ken, because you've never played, so you don't understand,
- 5:37Speaker 5: which is fine.
- 5:38Speaker 3: I never played AJ, but I covered it enough to understand,
- 5:40Speaker 3: and I respect players enough to understand.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Okay, I know I was giving you your props, Ken,
- 5:45Speaker 4: I was giving you your breath.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I was.
- 5:49Speaker 5: I get it.
- 5:50Speaker 4: The Braves lost bald Drake Baldwin, kun is coming back.
- 5:53Speaker 4: They've already lost Sean Murphy. Is this enough to allow
- 5:57Speaker 4: the Phillies back into this race? Because the Braves are
- 5:59Speaker 4: kind of running away with it? The Phillies fire their
- 6:01Speaker 4: manager and all of a sudden they're like unbeatable. So
- 6:04Speaker 4: is this Drake Baldwin injury, along with Sean Murphy enough
- 6:08Speaker 4: to possibly open the door just a little bit for
- 6:10Speaker 4: Kratz's Phillies to get back in this race.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Maybe? But I would still say the Braves are looking
- 6:17Speaker 3: really good. And of course it's not just been Drake
- 6:20Speaker 3: Baldwin who's been so outstanding for them in the early going.
- 6:22Speaker 3: It's been their rotation. It's been Matt Olsen, it's been
- 6:26Speaker 3: virtually everyone in that roster, Michael Harris, the second, all
- 6:30Speaker 3: these guys. So I don't know that having one position
- 6:35Speaker 3: decimated like that, and certainly losing Baldwin and Murphy decimates
- 6:39Speaker 3: your position. I don't know that that's going to have
- 6:41Speaker 3: that dramatic an effect, except if it really has a
- 6:46Speaker 3: difficult effect on the pitching staff. Because the pitching staff,
- 6:50Speaker 3: the rotation in particular, and the bullpen in the back end,
- 6:53Speaker 3: they've been so strong, So maybe it opens the door
- 6:57Speaker 3: a crack. The gap is still pretty sick. And yes,
- 7:00Speaker 3: the Phillies are playing great under Don Mattingley. They were
- 7:04Speaker 3: going to play great at some point. Their schedule eased
- 7:07Speaker 3: up about the moment they fired Rob Thompson. But all
- 7:10Speaker 3: the credit too. They've got a lot of good things
- 7:12Speaker 3: going right now. Stot the big home run last night.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Boom has come out of it, and of course Bryce
- 7:17Speaker 3: Harper is performing at an elite level, and Kyle Schwarber
- 7:21Speaker 3: is being Kyle Schwarber. And on top of that, they
- 7:24Speaker 3: might have the best one to two combination at the
- 7:26Speaker 3: top of rotation in the game. And I'm talking about
- 7:29Speaker 3: Sanchez and Wheeler. Wheeler is back. He is back to
- 7:33Speaker 3: what he was and it's been really cool to see.
- 7:38Speaker 6: We love our dog Bella who splays out in the
- 7:41Speaker 6: open sun on our floor like she's an underwear model
- 7:44Speaker 6: and that's why we love her so much. To scratch
- 7:46Speaker 6: her belly.
- 7:48Speaker 1: She's a cutie.
- 7:49Speaker 2: That bella and a quick message from today's sponsor, the

- 8:39Speaker 6: When you see a turnaround for a pitching staff with health,
- 8:42Speaker 6: but also like a Bryce Elder turnaround that he's had
- 8:45Speaker 6: back to his all star form that he had two
- 8:48Speaker 6: and a half years ago. How much are teams nowadays
- 8:52Speaker 6: that just fire coaches at whim And I'm talking about
- 8:55Speaker 6: Jeremy Heffner about how he was He was lauded as this,
- 8:58Speaker 6: Oh look at what he did for all the p
- 9:00Speaker 6: on the Mets staff, and then the Mets rotation went
- 9:03Speaker 6: because they brought nobody in. Is there going to be
- 9:07Speaker 6: a shift for coaches because of what somebody like a
- 9:12Speaker 6: Jeremy Haffner does going to Atlanta and absolutely and basically
- 9:17Speaker 6: turning around this entire rotation, not entire rotation, but entire
- 9:20Speaker 6: staff because some of the rotation was hurt last year.
- 9:23Speaker 6: So that's unfair. But they really have turned into something
- 9:26Speaker 6: that's a force.
- 9:27Speaker 3: In the East. I never understood why the Mets fired
- 9:31Speaker 3: Jeremy Haffner. He was a key part of their success
- 9:34Speaker 3: in twenty four. In twenty five, they had a great
- 9:38Speaker 3: run through June. Injuries, hit, things happened, okay, but that
- 9:43Speaker 3: didn't make him or his pitching coach. Now some of
- 9:46Speaker 3: the credit goes to Elder himself. Of course, for his
- 9:49Speaker 3: personal transformation with the way he has pitched and the
- 9:53Speaker 3: mix that he's employed and the different pitches all that
- 9:56Speaker 3: that is a lot of him executing, but it's also
- 10:00Speaker 3: so Hefner of course, delivering the right messages and talking
- 10:03Speaker 3: strategy with him and all of that. So I always believe,
- 10:08Speaker 3: well not always, but usually believe that coaches get too
- 10:13Speaker 3: bad or rap when things are going bad, and often
- 10:15Speaker 3: don't get enough credit when things are going good. Hefner
- 10:18Speaker 3: is a classic example of that. And again that one
- 10:23Speaker 3: I understood. The Mets felt changes needed to happen after
- 10:26Speaker 3: last year and that collapse. We all understand that. But
- 10:30Speaker 3: in my view, and this is a conversation separate from
- 10:33Speaker 3: what we're having here, they went too far in a
- 10:36Speaker 3: number of ways, and that is part of the reason
- 10:38Speaker 3: why they're in this position they're in right now.
- 10:42Speaker 6: All right, I mean, all I have to say right
- 10:44Speaker 6: now in baseball is the Dodgers Padres matchup. The fact
- 10:48Speaker 6: that we have this after rivalry week, it is the
- 10:52Speaker 6: new rivalry. Are these teams going to battle each other
- 10:56Speaker 6: the rest of the year, going down to the last game,
- 10:59Speaker 6: or is it going to be the Dodgers who has
- 11:01Speaker 6: just the unbeatable payroll, and it's totally unfair. The game
- 11:05Speaker 6: is just totally rigged for the Dodgers.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Well, obviously it's not totally rigged for the Dodgers. We're
- 11:10Speaker 3: seeing a number of low revenue teams perform quite well
- 11:13Speaker 3: this year, but we've harped on that. I won't talk
- 11:16Speaker 3: about that just here. But as my friend Joel Sherverer
- 11:20Speaker 3: of the New York Post put it the other day,
- 11:21Speaker 3: the Dodgers are treating the regular season as they usually do,
- 11:25Speaker 3: like an annoying appetizer to the full course meal that
- 11:29Speaker 3: will come in October. Now, ask to the question of
- 11:32Speaker 3: whether the Padres can overtake them. If you look at
- 11:35Speaker 3: run differential, the Dodgers are at plus ninety four right now.
- 11:38Speaker 3: The Padres are at plus eight. That would suggest that
- 11:42Speaker 3: the underlying strengths of these two teams are not as
- 11:45Speaker 3: close as they appear. But what the Padres do in
- 11:49Speaker 3: a year in which Manny is not hitting, Jackson, Merril's
- 11:52Speaker 3: not hitting Tatisa's not in a home run, and their
- 11:55Speaker 3: rotation has been a hodgepodge. It's kind of settling in now,
- 11:59Speaker 3: but it's been all over the place. What they do
- 12:03Speaker 3: when they get a lead, is they don't lose it.
- 12:06Speaker 3: And I had some stats yesterday on fair Territory where
- 12:09Speaker 3: there's something like twenty and oho leading after six twenty one,
- 12:13Speaker 3: and on all these stats leading after six, seven and eight,
- 12:16Speaker 3: they are really good, virtually unbeatable. We saw it again
- 12:19Speaker 3: last night, Jason Adam Mason Miller in the late inning
- 12:22Speaker 3: shut the door. So that is the Padres superpower their bullpen.
- 12:28Speaker 3: And if they get their offense going at a higher level,
- 12:31Speaker 3: and I expect that they will, Man, he's gonna hit
- 12:34Speaker 3: You would think Jackson Merrill, tatist will hit a home run. Eventually.
- 12:39Speaker 3: They're going to be a handful. And if Giolito can
- 12:42Speaker 3: settle in here and Walker Buller be a number five
- 12:45Speaker 3: that he seems to be comfortable with at this point,
- 12:50Speaker 3: then you might have something there. Even with the loss
- 12:53Speaker 3: of Pavetta, even without Darvish and Musgrove, so far, it's
- 12:56Speaker 3: been really impressive.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Believe that. Do you really believe that the padrest You
- 13:03Speaker 5: really do?
- 13:04Speaker 3: Yeah? Okay, I don't think we've seen the best version
- 13:10Speaker 3: of the Padres yet, and yet they're here now. The Dodgers,
- 13:13Speaker 3: if they're healthy, Yeah, of course they're an incredible team,
- 13:18Speaker 3: but they're not healthy. Smells down, glass, nails down, and
- 13:21Speaker 3: here we go every year with the Dodgers. So I
- 13:24Speaker 3: don't know, but yeah, I believe that Padres can stay
- 13:26Speaker 3: with them.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Ken.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Sorry, one more on the Dodgers before we go to
- 13:31Speaker 4: cold Emerson in the password. I'm not even to try
- 13:33Speaker 4: and say his name because I will butcher it worse
- 13:36Speaker 4: than anything. But the Edwin dis situation. Is this a
- 13:41Speaker 4: real thing? Because I know it's a federally a federal
- 13:45Speaker 4: law against banning this, but locally apparently it's not banned
- 13:50Speaker 4: and they're fighting it and they keep it in towns
- 13:53Speaker 4: and all this thing, and it's a part of their culture.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Is this something that Dodger fans should be worried about?
- 13:59Speaker 3: I understand is no. And I actually made a call
- 14:02Speaker 3: on this this morning, Aja, And it's a tricky spot
- 14:06Speaker 3: for Major League Baseball in certain respects. Yes, cockfighting is illegal,
- 14:11Speaker 3: and it's even illegal in Puerto Rico, but in Puerto
- 14:14Speaker 3: Rico it still goes on and it's part of their
- 14:17Speaker 3: culture there. Whether we can judge that or not. Negatively,
- 14:20Speaker 3: that we can, of course, but that's the reality of it.
- 14:24Speaker 3: So for MLB to go in there and say well,
- 14:26Speaker 3: we're going to investigate this, and guys who are doing this,
- 14:29Speaker 3: you can't do it. It's kind of a slippery slope.
- 14:32Speaker 3: It's a difficult one because they would effectively be imposing
- 14:35Speaker 3: their will on a culture that, obviously, for better or worse,
- 14:41Speaker 3: and I would say worse values this part of life
- 14:46Speaker 3: in Puerto Rico. So I don't expect anything to happen.
- 14:49Speaker 3: And this is apparently something that's been known for years
- 14:53Speaker 3: that ed when Diaz has been involved with, and I'm
- 14:54Speaker 3: sure other players are involved with as well. So I
- 14:58Speaker 3: don't expect any action to take place with this at all.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Okay, that's good, that's good. We can put this to
- 15:06Speaker 4: bed then, thank you. Ken Rosenthal said that we can
- 15:08Speaker 4: put it to bed. Now onto the prospects. Cold Emerson
- 15:10Speaker 4: gets called up by the Mariners. The password gets called
- 15:12Speaker 4: up for the Pirates. Obviously, the expectations are higher for
- 15:15Speaker 4: the Colt Emerson in Seattle hit his first home run
- 15:18Speaker 4: last night, got his first hit. Is this another aj
- 15:21Speaker 4: ewing where they're trying to inject energy into their offense
- 15:25Speaker 4: because their offense has been struggling. No, cal Rawley and
- 15:27Speaker 4: then as far as the password in Pittsburgh. He's just
- 15:29Speaker 4: more of a placeholder right until O'Hearn comes back.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Well with Emerson AJ he wouldn't have come up if
- 15:37Speaker 3: Brendan Donovan hadn't gotten hurt. Now, I would have expected
- 15:41Speaker 3: him to come up at some point this year after
- 15:43Speaker 3: signing the eight year, ninety five million dollar extension. But
- 15:46Speaker 3: it wasn't as if let's do the aj Ewing Carson
- 15:50Speaker 3: bench thing and get some energy into this offense. It
- 15:52Speaker 3: was Donovan was hurt, the spot was there, let's go
- 15:56Speaker 3: and cold. Emerson, of course, is one of the highest
- 15:59Speaker 3: regards prospects in the game, former first round pick. He's
- 16:03Speaker 3: a guy that they expect to succeed. That's why they
- 16:06Speaker 3: gave him the money. That's why they anticipate playing him
- 16:09Speaker 3: at shortstop next year. The password is a little bit different.
- 16:13Speaker 3: He had been hurt, then he got hot at Triple A.
- 16:15Speaker 3: When he came back really hot. I believe he had
- 16:17Speaker 3: a three homer game last weekend. So yeah, with O'Hearn
- 16:21Speaker 3: going down, he's kind of the obvious choice, and they
- 16:24Speaker 3: can give him some runway here. But I don't know
- 16:27Speaker 3: that any team has done what the Mets are trying
- 16:31Speaker 3: to do in terms of the way they're going about it.
- 16:34Speaker 3: The Mets are clearly trying to inject energy with these
- 16:38Speaker 3: younger outfielders, and they're just bringing up another one today,
- 16:40Speaker 3: Nick Morbido. That is something that they feel will help
- 16:44Speaker 3: their team, whereas the other teams are acting more out
- 16:48Speaker 3: of need, and the Mets, it's not that they don't
- 16:51Speaker 3: have a need or didn't have a need for those players,
- 16:53Speaker 3: but it's more of a natural progression with the Pirates
- 16:57Speaker 3: and the Mariners here where injuries create the openings.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and we're going to talk more about all of
- 17:04Speaker 2: those prospects and the call ups later in the show.
- 17:06Speaker 2: We'll do a whole segment on it. Ken good stuff,
- 17:08Speaker 2: Thank you, catchu later this week.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Thanks guys.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Some wireless plans can get a little bit crazy, a
- 17:17Speaker 2: little bit off the charts expensive. Mint Mobile can get
- 17:21Speaker 2: you started with three months of premium wireless for fifteen
- 17:26Speaker 2: bucks a month.
- 17:27Speaker 7: Pretty good. So I like that.

- 18:23Speaker 2: We're talking tigers, but the beginning of this segment should
- 18:26Speaker 2: be for everyone. Cody Stavenhagen joining us covers the tigers
- 18:29Speaker 2: for the athletic and the host of Tiger Territory with others.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Cody, good to see you.
- 18:34Speaker 2: So before we get to the struggles for Detroit, I
- 18:36Speaker 2: do want to start with a topic that should resonate
- 18:39Speaker 2: with many in its science. Right it's the medical field
- 18:42Speaker 2: that is advancing itself.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Why are you showing me the clock?
- 18:46Speaker 5: Aj, It's time.
- 18:50Speaker 4: It's time to start panicking because the white Tucks are
- 18:53Speaker 4: coming and the tigers as they are are falling.
- 18:56Speaker 2: But Scoogle should come back sooner, and I do want
- 18:59Speaker 2: to start here with the glass have full scenario because
- 19:01Speaker 2: I'm also just curious about the nanoscope. Now we see
- 19:03Speaker 2: Blake Snell going with the same thing, and the quotes
- 19:05Speaker 2: from school were pretty cool.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Cody, you can get into it. We'll finally let you talk.
- 19:09Speaker 1: But it sounds like Scoogle was like, cool, I.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Have a quicker recovery, and you guys say it's fine.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I mean, yeah.
- 19:18Speaker 7: It's really been fascinating to learn more about Arthur's scopic procedures,
- 19:22Speaker 7: and specifically the nano needle, which is this new smaller
- 19:26Speaker 7: Arthur's scope. It's significantly smaller. I talked to Arthur X,
- 19:30Speaker 7: the company that manufactures it, and they just showed me
- 19:33Speaker 7: the difference. You have this big scope and you have
- 19:35Speaker 7: a smaller scope with a one point nine millimeter diameter,
- 19:40Speaker 7: And when it's like which one would you rather want
- 19:42Speaker 7: going into your joint visually, it's pretty easy to see
- 19:45Speaker 7: the smaller one and be like, okay, I'll take that. Now.
- 19:48Speaker 7: This is a newer instrument. It had never been before
- 19:52Speaker 7: used that we know of, an MLB pitcher, but Neil Lichtrash.
- 19:55Speaker 7: He's one of the best surgeons in the world. He
- 19:57Speaker 7: felt Scoobl's case, given the SI, the location, the fact
- 20:01Speaker 7: he only had one loose body, was kind of the
- 20:03Speaker 7: perfect place to try it out. It's been used for
- 20:06Speaker 7: years on other patients, knee procedures, shoulder procedures, so there's
- 20:10Speaker 7: data that shows, hey, this works.
- 20:12Speaker 1: This is cool.
- 20:13Speaker 7: It's not an experimental thing. It just hadn't been used
- 20:16Speaker 7: on elite athletes before, and it seems like that's changing.
- 20:20Speaker 7: Because what this means you go in with a smaller scope.
- 20:23Speaker 7: It causes a lot less inflammation. You're not damaging the
- 20:26Speaker 7: tissue that you're moving around searching for this loose body
- 20:29Speaker 7: to pull out of a picture's joint. So what that
- 20:34Speaker 7: means is you wake up, you have a lot less swelling,
- 20:36Speaker 7: you have a lot less inflammation, less scarring, all that stuff,
- 20:39Speaker 7: and as a result of that, in theory, you're able
- 20:42Speaker 7: to throw far sooner than you would if you undergo
- 20:45Speaker 7: a traditional arthroscopic procedure. That was certainly the case with
- 20:48Speaker 7: Sarah Scuogle. He started throwing within three or four days.
- 20:52Speaker 7: At the time, I was like, okay, this is encouraging.
- 20:55Speaker 7: There's still a big difference between playing light catch and
- 20:58Speaker 7: pitching like the best in the world. Well, here Trek
- 21:01Speaker 7: Scuoble comes yesterday. He's back in Camerica Park. He's warming
- 21:05Speaker 7: up from one hundred and twenty plus feet. He's firing
- 21:08Speaker 7: that thing in there. Weather pushed his bullpen inside, so
- 21:11Speaker 7: I didn't get to watch it. But he threw what
- 21:13Speaker 7: he reported to be a full bullpen, used all his pitches.
- 21:16Speaker 7: This guy had surgery twelve days ago, so it is
- 21:19Speaker 7: pretty remarkable. And yet now Blake Snell is also going
- 21:23Speaker 7: to undergo a similar surgery with the nanoeedle. If the
- 21:27Speaker 7: recovery continues to go well for Schooble, if it goes
- 21:29Speaker 7: well with Snell, we might just see this tool being
- 21:32Speaker 7: used way more often.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Cody can Trek Schoobile saved the season for the Tigers.
- 21:39Speaker 4: I know it's been a rough go for him. I
- 21:42Speaker 4: mean they are not playing well. Then forget pitching, hitting, anything, bullpen,
- 21:46Speaker 4: you name it. It hasn't gone well for him. Can
- 21:48Speaker 4: Tarek School will be the burst of energy that they
- 21:50Speaker 4: need to get them back in this race.
- 21:53Speaker 7: Yeah, we'll see. I think that's kind of the big question.
- 21:56Speaker 7: When Schooble first went on the il and when the
- 21:58Speaker 7: Tigers had all these other pile up, the way I
- 22:01Speaker 7: looked at it was okay, can they stay afloat? Can
- 22:04Speaker 7: they do enough to stay within striking distance, whether that's
- 22:07Speaker 7: in the division or the wild card until they get
- 22:10Speaker 7: more of their full team back. And so far the
- 22:13Speaker 7: Tigers have not stayed afloat at all. They've lost eleven
- 22:16Speaker 7: of thirteen. It's been pretty brutal. Now, yeah, they play
- 22:20Speaker 7: in the ALE Central. They're now six and a half
- 22:22Speaker 7: games behind the Guardians. That's not nothing, but the American
- 22:25Speaker 7: League is really weak. In the age of the expanded playoff,
- 22:28Speaker 7: it's hard to ever fall totally out of it. This
- 22:30Speaker 7: start of the Tiger season has been a disaster. Everything
- 22:33Speaker 7: that's gone wrong could have gone wrong, has gone wrong,
- 22:36Speaker 7: and they's somehow only two and a half games out
- 22:39Speaker 7: of a wild card spot. Schoogle, we don't know for
- 22:42Speaker 7: sure when he's gonna be back. He's got to throw
- 22:44Speaker 7: some more bullpins. You would think he'll probably have multiple
- 22:47Speaker 7: rehab outings. So I don't even want to put a
- 22:50Speaker 7: guess other than at some point, certainly before the All
- 22:52Speaker 7: Star break, he would think. But the Tigers can't be
- 22:56Speaker 7: eight games out of a playoff spot. By the time
- 22:58Speaker 7: he comes back, it could be too late. They have
- 23:00Speaker 7: to start playing better somehow than they're playing right now.
- 23:04Speaker 6: Cody, this is not just forty games. And we talked
- 23:07Speaker 6: about it last year. We talked about it last time.
- 23:09Speaker 6: You were on about how this is extended back to
- 23:12Speaker 6: and I forget the exact date that you brought up,
- 23:15Speaker 6: but the end of last year. Is there a way
- 23:18Speaker 6: for them to pull out of this in the sense
- 23:22Speaker 6: of a malaise, in the sense that they brought in
- 23:24Speaker 6: framber Valdez to kind of be that second Trek Scooble
- 23:29Speaker 6: in this rotation. Jack Flaherty is not saying he's getting cut,
- 23:34Speaker 6: but I'm saying there's less and less innings that they
- 23:36Speaker 6: had more depth. But is there a way that they
- 23:38Speaker 6: get out of this? And I guess I'm specifically speaking
- 23:42Speaker 6: to the offense and what they're not bringing to the
- 23:46Speaker 6: park night in and night out.
- 23:48Speaker 7: Yeah, Well, I wrote this down for you, Kratzy. Since
- 23:51Speaker 7: July ninth of last year, the Tigers are forty eight
- 23:54Speaker 7: and sixty eight. Before that, they had played out of
- 23:57Speaker 7: their minds dating back to the tail end of twenty
- 23:59Speaker 7: twenty four they had a ninety and forty seven run
- 24:02Speaker 7: They had one of the best, I think the best
- 24:03Speaker 7: record in baseball from All Star Break to All Star
- 24:06Speaker 7: Break and around the time of last year's All Star break,
- 24:08Speaker 7: it's cratered. Yeah, you can point to the injuries. They
- 24:11Speaker 7: haven't really had their full team this year. There's some
- 24:15Speaker 7: hope for the pitching. Casey Mize's back, Troy Melton a
- 24:18Speaker 7: really good young arm, maybe back soon. Justin Ferrylanders working
- 24:22Speaker 7: his way back. They're already getting some bullpen guys like
- 24:24Speaker 7: Will Vest healthy. But you're right, I think the offense,
- 24:27Speaker 7: to me, has become the bigger concern. Entering yesterday's game
- 24:32Speaker 7: thirtieth and slugging percentage for the month of May twenty
- 24:34Speaker 7: ninth in ops. Yeah, they're missing Labor Touarez, they're missing
- 24:38Speaker 7: Kerry Carpenter. But they have some guys who are supposed
- 24:40Speaker 7: to be really important members of this team who've done
- 24:43Speaker 7: next to nothing all this year. Spencer Toorkilsen had a
- 24:46Speaker 7: nice little home run streak. He's hitting below two hundred.
- 24:49Speaker 7: Zach McKinstry was an All Star last year. He's hitting
- 24:51Speaker 7: below two hundred. Matt verling holmered yesterday the Tigers were
- 24:55Speaker 7: excited about getting him back healthy. Hasn't given them a lot.
- 24:58Speaker 7: There are more Jake Rodgers, the backup catcher not hitting.
- 25:02Speaker 7: I'm forgetting some of the other names because it's a
- 25:05Speaker 7: long list of players who aren't performing. That Tiger's had
- 25:09Speaker 7: production from Riley Green, Kerry Carpenter, Dylan Dingler. That's been
- 25:13Speaker 7: about it, and that's just not been good enough. And
- 25:16Speaker 7: now we're forty eight games into this thing. You can
- 25:19Speaker 7: look back on last year it is like, Okay, at
- 25:21Speaker 7: what point do you turn this around?
- 25:23Speaker 1: A J.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Hinch last night said if we're just now getting frustrated,
- 25:26Speaker 7: it's too late, and that that I think it's pretty
- 25:29Speaker 7: telling in itself.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Is there a magic bullet?
- 25:35Speaker 6: Is there something that the Tigers now they're not going
- 25:38Speaker 6: to fire your magic bullet because Terror Scoopbl's not back yet.
- 25:41Speaker 6: When he comes back, that's when you have your meeting.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Come on, guys, we gotta turn this thing around. Oh,
- 25:46Speaker 6: Tarres Scoobl's pitching tomorrow. See that's a coincidence. But is
- 25:49Speaker 6: that because you see the teams like the Mets, we're
- 25:52Speaker 6: also struggling. They called up young guys. The Mariner's struggling
- 25:57Speaker 6: they called up cold Emerson. Is there a magic B?
- 26:00Speaker 6: Is it? Max Clark?
- 26:02Speaker 7: Is it?
- 26:02Speaker 6: You know? How where do the Tigers sit as far
- 26:05Speaker 6: as Tiger's fans saying, We're just gonna look at the
- 26:07Speaker 6: same exact team since July ninth and move forward with it.
- 26:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I think that is one of the harder questions
- 26:15Speaker 7: to answer at this point, right because at some point,
- 26:18Speaker 7: all those guys I just listed off others who have
- 26:21Speaker 7: filled in for injuries act sure how you lead, like
- 26:23Speaker 7: the production just hasn't been good enough. But I don't know,
- 26:28Speaker 7: like you call up someone else from Triple A who's
- 26:31Speaker 7: probably not ready for the major leagues? That does that
- 26:33Speaker 7: get you anywhere? They're certainly fans who'd love to see
- 26:37Speaker 7: Max Clark. I don't know. Max Clark has one home
- 26:39Speaker 7: run right now in Triple A. Like he is still developing,
- 26:42Speaker 7: he's been going through a rough stretch. I'm not sure
- 26:44Speaker 7: he comes up and solves all your problems and you
- 26:47Speaker 7: can swap some of these guys who are struggling for
- 26:49Speaker 7: another fringe prospect or for a type veteran. Does that
- 26:54Speaker 7: help your team? I'm not sure it does. At the
- 26:56Speaker 7: same time, Yeah, like some of these guys have to
- 26:59Speaker 7: get going, or maybe you make a change just just
- 27:01Speaker 7: for the sake of making a change. They're in a
- 27:03Speaker 7: tough position. I don't know that there's any great answer
- 27:07Speaker 7: other than play better. Some of these guys with track
- 27:09Speaker 7: records have to start producing. We've seen it before, given
- 27:13Speaker 7: the wild ups and downs and the Tigers right from
- 27:16Speaker 7: ninety and forty seven to forty eight and sixty eight.
- 27:20Speaker 7: Hope isn't a great strategy. But I don't know what
- 27:22Speaker 7: you do other than sit here and hope your luck
- 27:24Speaker 7: turns around a little bit and you get your team
- 27:26Speaker 7: healthy and you start playing real baseball in the second half.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Cody, what do they do about Framber? Like yesterday? Right
- 27:34Speaker 4: for example? Like that's a game Fromber needs to go
- 27:37Speaker 4: out and dominate and they kind of got smacked. What's
- 27:41Speaker 4: the deal with him? And I'll throw Flarity in there
- 27:44Speaker 4: for the same thing. Like Jack Flaherty is a guy
- 27:48Speaker 4: who's had success in the past as a veteran guy,
- 27:50Speaker 4: and he hasn't gone off to a great start at all.
- 27:52Speaker 4: So they need these guys, Yes, Scoobles out, But they
- 27:54Speaker 4: have veteran guys on this staff. It's time for them
- 27:57Speaker 4: to step up right.
- 27:59Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know that from Rival Does is at
- 28:01Speaker 7: the top of my list of concerns. I mean, giving
- 28:03Speaker 7: how much money he's making that I understand why that's
- 28:05Speaker 7: a talking point. He's had some really good outings. Now
- 28:08Speaker 7: he's had a couple of blow ups too that have
- 28:10Speaker 7: really marred as Era. And we saw the you know,
- 28:13Speaker 7: the hit by pitch to Trevor's story and the suspension
- 28:16Speaker 7: fromber came back after that outing, and I was a
- 28:18Speaker 7: little worried, like, how was his demeanor going to be?
- 28:20Speaker 7: And he was really good yesterday. He wasn't great, but
- 28:23Speaker 7: he somewhat kept them in the game. The offense gave
- 28:26Speaker 7: him nothing, gave him no run support from Rival Does
- 28:29Speaker 7: has had some terrific outings. You'd like to see him,
- 28:31Speaker 7: you know, see that be every time out, But I
- 28:33Speaker 7: think you just look, you see the four or five
- 28:35Speaker 7: eight ra it's really a result of two just horrendous
- 28:39Speaker 7: outings where he gave up what an eight spot and
- 28:42Speaker 7: nine spot. So I don't know that that's at the
- 28:44Speaker 7: top of my listening concerns. Jack Flaherty pretty high on
- 28:47Speaker 7: my list of concerns because this is a guy we've
- 28:48Speaker 7: seen him, we've seen this guy have a really high
- 28:52Speaker 7: levels of success in the major leagues. He just hasn't
- 28:54Speaker 7: been that same guy really dating the last season, certainly
- 28:57Speaker 7: not with any level of consistency, and more often than not,
- 29:01Speaker 7: he's put his team in the hole in the first
- 29:03Speaker 7: couple innings, or if he looks good in the first
- 29:04Speaker 7: couple of innings, the stuff starts to decline as he
- 29:07Speaker 7: goes two or three times through the order. Clearly it's
- 29:10Speaker 7: been a struggle for him. Mentally, I feel bad for
- 29:13Speaker 7: the guy because he's trying and he's searching for solutions,
- 29:16Speaker 7: but it hasn't happened. And this is a guy making
- 29:18Speaker 7: twenty million dollars himself. At the start of you go
- 29:21Speaker 7: back to spring training, there's a thought like did the
- 29:23Speaker 7: Tigers have the best rotation in the al And part
- 29:25Speaker 7: of that was based on not just Scoobale, not just
- 29:28Speaker 7: from her, but like how good can Flarerity be? How
- 29:30Speaker 7: good can Casey Mies be? So far, Casey mis has
- 29:32Speaker 7: been really good when healthy. Jack Flaherty has been really
- 29:36Speaker 7: bad when healthy, and given the money he's making, I'm
- 29:38Speaker 7: not sure they can easily move on from him or
- 29:41Speaker 7: anything like that. So so Flarity in particular a tough spot.
- 29:45Speaker 7: He's got to find a way to be better if
- 29:46Speaker 7: this rotation is gonna stay intact, if you can ease
- 29:49Speaker 7: the concern on a bullpen which has carried a pretty
- 29:51Speaker 7: heavy load so far this season, Their sources are worry,
- 29:55Speaker 7: no doubt.
- 29:56Speaker 6: I mean, nobody has to play anybody different. But the
- 30:00Speaker 6: Tigers are in the American League, and this is more
- 30:02Speaker 6: of a broader question. They're two and a half out
- 30:05Speaker 6: of the wildcard. It's way too early to even think
- 30:07Speaker 6: about the wildcard, but the fact that they're playing this poorly,
- 30:10Speaker 6: and you mentioned before they're six or six and a
- 30:12Speaker 6: half behind the Guardians for the division. Have you seen
- 30:16Speaker 6: a very beleaguered American League this year? And I'm not
- 30:20Speaker 6: one hundred percent sure how many National League teams they've
- 30:23Speaker 6: played or anything like that, But the teams that you
- 30:26Speaker 6: see coming in, are you saying, ooh, the Tigers could
- 30:30Speaker 6: could kind of keep up with this team, And then
- 30:31Speaker 6: the end of the series they lose two of three
- 30:34Speaker 6: because the teams that are coming in are not really
- 30:36Speaker 6: that great.
- 30:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean the Blue Jays were just in towent
- 30:41Speaker 7: a team that almost won the World Series last year,
- 30:43Speaker 7: and they've had as similar trajectory as the Tigers, pretty injured.
- 30:47Speaker 7: Just they haven't gotten things going. Lad he hasn't gotten going,
- 30:51Speaker 7: And I don't know. The Blue Jays took two or
- 30:53Speaker 7: three from the Tigers the Saturday and Sunday games. Tigers
- 30:56Speaker 7: struck out fourteen times in one of those games, hit
- 31:00Speaker 7: seemingly nothing but ground balls and weak pop ups. The
- 31:02Speaker 7: second game. The Tigers made the Blue Jays look pretty
- 31:05Speaker 7: good this weekend. But you're right, some of these teams
- 31:07Speaker 7: have come to town and you're not You're not really
- 31:10Speaker 7: fearing any of these teams. And that's that's worth noting. Like,
- 31:13Speaker 7: given how bad the entire al has started, we're probably
- 31:17Speaker 7: in for for some roller coaster rides as the summer
- 31:20Speaker 7: goes along, as we get into the second half, because
- 31:23Speaker 7: surely somebody has to start playing better, right And I
- 31:26Speaker 7: don't know exactly who that's gonna be. Maybe ends up
- 31:28Speaker 7: being the Tigers. But it has been a weird first
- 31:32Speaker 7: forty five forty eight games in the American League, no
- 31:34Speaker 7: doubt about that.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I mean, for all of the teams that we're talking
- 31:40Speaker 2: about as massive disappointments, you then look up and you
- 31:45Speaker 2: look at the standings and you're like, they're one good
- 31:47Speaker 2: week away from everything changing. That's how crazy the AL
- 31:51Speaker 2: is these days. At the NL is destroying the American
- 31:55Speaker 2: League right, both in the way that the teams look
- 31:57Speaker 2: and then the inner league action too is off the charts.
- 32:02Speaker 7: Yeah, it helps when everyone's off to a terrible start, right, Yes,
- 32:06Speaker 7: that's one way to feel a little bit better about yourself.
- 32:09Speaker 7: Maybe they're all just terrible. Well, there's that too. There's
- 32:12Speaker 7: that too. I think the West is fast having I think,
- 32:17Speaker 7: you know, the Rangers got to have something in there.
- 32:19Speaker 7: The Mariners have drastically underperformed. I don't know about the Astros,
- 32:24Speaker 7: but like I look at the AL West and I
- 32:26Speaker 7: wouldn't be surprised if at least one of those teams
- 32:28Speaker 7: pops as as this year goes on.
- 32:30Speaker 1: There aren't as many bad teams too.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I mean, unless you're calling everybody bad, but you can't
- 32:34Speaker 2: do that, right, These are the best.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Players in the world. They're not all bad.
- 32:37Speaker 2: So in the American League, even though it's not as
- 32:39Speaker 2: good as the National League, Cody, we just have a
- 32:41Speaker 2: lot of teams that are just okay, and we don't
- 32:44Speaker 2: have many terrible teams.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Right when you look around in the American League.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Again, keep in mind that there are teams that are
- 32:50Speaker 2: off to disting, point pointing starts. But you said the
- 32:53Speaker 2: Ale West is interesting. I think the Angels look terrible.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Does anyone else in that division look terrible?
- 32:59Speaker 3: Like?
- 32:59Speaker 2: The Ring look like they have some good components to them,
- 33:03Speaker 2: Same with the A's, same with the Uh, Well, it's.
- 33:08Speaker 7: Pretty terrible at times.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Yeah, they have looked terrible on the pitching front, but
- 33:13Speaker 2: that's my point. I mean, any of these teams are
- 33:15Speaker 2: just a little bit of a winning streak away from recovering.
- 33:18Speaker 2: And I know the Mariners have been off to a
- 33:19Speaker 2: slow start, but they're certainly not terrible either.
- 33:22Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean the White Socks are above five hundred.
- 33:25Speaker 7: I don't know exactly what that that tells you. I
- 33:27Speaker 7: mean I saw science in the second half last year
- 33:29Speaker 7: that they were playing a way better, better brand of baseball.
- 33:31Speaker 7: I think Will Vinible has done a great job there.
- 33:34Speaker 7: But it is like, were they just above five hundred
- 33:37Speaker 7: because everyone else is just okay. I still would have
- 33:39Speaker 7: expected the White Sox to be in the cellar, but
- 33:43Speaker 7: I don't know. They've done some nice things. I'm not
- 33:45Speaker 7: sure it's for real, Like they're better, better, they are better.
- 33:49Speaker 5: They're better than the Tigers. That's what it tells me.
- 33:53Speaker 7: Hey, finish the twins.
- 33:57Speaker 1: When you tank for five years, that's what happens.
- 33:59Speaker 6: You know what answer answer Cody's question?
- 34:02Speaker 5: He just said, what was the question?
- 34:04Speaker 7: White Sox finished the year with a better record than
- 34:07Speaker 7: Detroit Tigers.
- 34:08Speaker 5: Wait, I couldn't hear you.
- 34:09Speaker 7: Wait, White Sox or Tigers? Who finishes with more wins? Wait?
- 34:13Speaker 5: What White talk? Would you say about the Wait?
- 34:17Speaker 7: I guess you don't want to answer the question.
- 34:19Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 34:21Speaker 5: I'll take the White Sox right now. I'll take the
- 34:23Speaker 5: White Sox.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Not every I mean not every division could be like
- 34:27Speaker 2: the National League Central, where there's no teams below the
- 34:30Speaker 2: five hundred marks still and we're a quarter into the season.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Go ahead, krat you got last licks you talk about?
- 34:35Speaker 6: Casey Mice came back, had a good outing. How hard
- 34:39Speaker 6: do they lean on him when guys like Flaherty aren't
- 34:44Speaker 6: aren't pitching well, or even like Kyder Montero's going out
- 34:49Speaker 6: there giving them spotty starts here and there with an
- 34:51Speaker 6: injury history that Casey Mice has, and he had the
- 34:54Speaker 6: all starts season last year and he's already been hurt
- 34:56Speaker 6: once this year. Do you feel like they are going
- 35:00Speaker 6: to treat him or need to treat him differently if
- 35:03Speaker 6: they want to have him healthy for the playoffs or
- 35:05Speaker 6: have they dub themselves such a hole that it's like, look,
- 35:09Speaker 6: we gotta we got to get what we get out
- 35:11Speaker 6: of you, and we hope it's we hope you stay together.
- 35:15Speaker 7: Yeah, so far it seems like they're they're trying to
- 35:18Speaker 7: stay the course. Myz just came off the IL and
- 35:21Speaker 7: he was pretty dominant through six innings, but AJ Hinch
- 35:23Speaker 7: pulled him when of his pitch count was still in
- 35:25Speaker 7: the seventies. Asked Aj about that afterward, and he, you know,
- 35:28Speaker 7: he explained the IL thing. You're trying to ease him
- 35:30Speaker 7: back in, but also the long run. The Tigers certainly
- 35:33Speaker 7: still have aspirations of playing in September and October and
- 35:37Speaker 7: again two and a half games out of the wild Card,
- 35:39Speaker 7: they are not out of anything at all. But you
- 35:43Speaker 7: would certainly like to see Myz log a lot of
- 35:45Speaker 7: innings for you. I don't know, I mean, they're not
- 35:47Speaker 7: going to have him go throw one hundred and twenty pitches.
- 35:50Speaker 7: They don't do that with everybody, but sure there's there's
- 35:53Speaker 7: definitely like an odd and almost unfair sense of pressure
- 35:56Speaker 7: on Miz to carry the load while scoobles out while
- 36:00Speaker 7: some other guys are either injured or struggling. So I
- 36:03Speaker 7: think he's a very important player for this team going forward,
- 36:07Speaker 7: but I don't think they will use him any differently
- 36:09Speaker 7: than they would under normal circumstances.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Cody, thank you for the info.
