On August 3rd, NHL history took flight — literally — when the Philadelphia Flyers debuted in ’67 after a sibling’s quirky suggestion (“Flyers”) beat out thousands of fan submissions, even beating a kid’s misspelling that won a TV. Meanwhile, the WHA’s Blazers landed Stanley Cup hero John McKenzie in ’72, and later decades saw big moves: Pete Mahovlich traded back to Detroit (who’d rue it as he won four Cups with Montreal), and Dave Poulin bringing his Selke and Clancy trophies to Washington in ’93. Fast forward to 2020, where Andrei Svechnikov and Connor McDavid both lit up the scoreboard…
