- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. Hi everybody.
- 0:28This is Dee Dee Trotter, three time Olympian, Olympic gold and
- 0:31bronze medalist in the sport of track and field.
- 0:34I was the University of Tennessee 400 meter NCAA
- 0:38champion. I was also 2007 USA 400 meter
- 0:43champion. I am a two time USA 400 meter
- 0:46Indoor champion and the University of Tennessee Hall of
- 0:50Famer. This is an exciting opportunity
- 0:53for me to share with you guys my take and my experience on what
- 0:58is actually required to achieve your goals.
- 1:01In the last 15 years I have worked very closely with
- 1:06athletes of all ages and the number one question that I
- 1:10always get can be summed up to how do you do it?
- 1:15How did you reach your goals? And while this question comes in
- 1:20a variety of of styles, you know, sometimes asking questions
- 1:25like, oh, where do you, you know, what did you do when you
- 1:29were in high school to get to college?
- 1:32Or what did you do to from college to get to the pros?
- 1:35But ultimately, that question can be summed up in one way.
- 1:40How do you reach your goal? And I have some experience that
- 1:47has allowed me to kind of formulate what I think is a
- 1:51great strategy for most anybody to utilize in order to reach
- 1:55their goals. The first thing you have to do
- 1:58is have a goal. A lot of times people are so
- 2:02vague with what they want to accomplish.
- 2:04It becomes very difficult to focus, becomes very difficult to
- 2:09make progress towards your goal when you don't really have it
- 2:13defined. And then on the other hand, you
- 2:15have some people that set a goal and it doesn't have any mile
- 2:22markers along the way. You know, it's basically if they
- 2:25don't get that goal in their first or second attempt, they
- 2:28they kind of just give up on it or they lose confidence in being
- 2:31able to achieve it. And then lastly, a lot of times
- 2:35people don't actually know what it takes to get to their goal.
- 2:40So they have a goal and it's just, you know, this imaginary
- 2:44thing that you know, sits on their mind or in their desk or
- 2:49even something they talk about. And at the end of the day, they
- 2:52have no idea what it's actually going to take to achieve it or
- 2:57execute it. And I see that probably more so
- 3:01than anything else. An example of that would be
- 3:04I've, I've run into several athletes who who say, yeah, I
- 3:08want to go pro and track and field most, most of them have
- 3:13been sprinters. And I say, great, OK, So what?
- 3:18What time do you need to be to run to be competitive at the pro
- 3:23level? And a lot of times they really
- 3:25don't know the answer and say, OK, well, you got to know how
- 3:30fast you have to run to get to that level.
- 3:33Then there's also, I want to go to a certain college.
- 3:37Yeah, I want to go to University of Tennessee.
- 3:39I want to go to University of Florida.
- 3:41I want to go to, you know, UGA got all these great goals, but
- 3:46what does it take? What does it take academically?
- 3:50What does it take to get a scholarship?
- 3:53What time, what distance does it actually take to get to that,
- 3:58that goal? And I see this disconnect more
- 4:03so than any other disconnected athletes that desire to go to
- 4:08another level or desire to achieve a goal do not often know
- 4:12what it actually requires for them to do it, which makes it
- 4:15very hard to make any progress towards achieving it.
- 4:19That being said, I kind of want to talk about how to set your
- 4:23goals properly, how to set the mile markers, how to start
- 4:28making progress towards your goals because that's what it's
- 4:31going to take. In order for a lot of young
- 4:36athletes who are aspiring to go to the college level and go to
- 4:39the professional level. It starts with having that goal.
- 4:42It starts with having a target. So the first thing I want you to
- 4:47do, if you're listening and if you're a parent, maybe write
- 4:50this down or if you're and if you're an athlete, just go ahead
- 4:53and grab a piece of paper and do it right now.
- 4:57First things first, you got to know what the goal is.
- 5:00For me, I want it to be the best 400m runner in the world.
- 5:05Now notice I didn't say in the city, I didn't say in the state,
- 5:10I didn't say in the country, I said the world.
- 5:13The first thing you have to do is be unafraid to dream the
- 5:18dream or set the goal that you actually really want for
- 5:23yourself. Not something that feels safe.
- 5:28Not something that feels easy and feasible and you're not
- 5:33afraid to go after it. You need to dream the dream you
- 5:36really want. If you're too afraid to actually
- 5:39say what you want in your heart, to go for what it is you really
- 5:41want, you're never going to get it.
- 5:44It will always be a dream. It'll always be something that
- 5:48you had in your imagination that would never come true unless you
- 5:51get extremely lucky and somehow it falls in your lap, which
- 5:56doesn't happen very often. So the first thing you need to
- 5:59do is write down the goal. Write down the goal or the dream
- 6:05that you really want and have in your heart and put it on a real
- 6:08piece of paper. Then you're going to take that
- 6:11piece of paper and put it somewhere that you have to see
- 6:15it every day. Now I need to go back just a
- 6:18moment and make sure that when you write this goal, you write
- 6:23it in a way that means that it's already in a way that is
- 6:27affirming what it is that you're trying to achieve.
- 6:30You have to write it as if it's already done or that you already
- 6:32believe it or it's already been accomplished.
- 6:35So, for example, I wouldn't write I hope to be the best 400m
- 6:40runner in the world. I would write I am the best 400m
- 6:44runner in the world. You have to write it as if
- 6:49you've already accomplished it. That's the first step into
- 6:53believing it. So now that you've written down
- 6:57your goal, I need you to put it somewhere that you have to see
- 7:00it every day. It could be on your mirror,
- 7:04which is a great place to put it.
- 7:06It could be on your door. It can be on your wall, it can
- 7:09be written multiple places. You can write it multiple times
- 7:14and put it on your notebook or your desk or in your car if you
- 7:17drive. It doesn't really matter.
- 7:19You just need to put it somewhere that you see it every
- 7:21day. And the more places you put it
- 7:23and the more places you see it, the more it's going to start
- 7:26encouraging you to believe it. The biggest part about this is
- 7:32that you need to write it with your hand.
- 7:35I know it's easy in this day and age to, you know, let AI
- 7:38generate a poster for you or, you know, even type it on your
- 7:42computer and print it out. But you actually need to write
- 7:45it with your hand. And that way it becomes
- 7:49something that came out of your mind, transferred from your hand
- 7:53into a real object. At that point, once you've done
- 7:57that, it's connecting you to the goal.
- 8:01You've officially been connected to the goal after you've written
- 8:04it one time. That's great.
- 8:05The more you write it, the more you see it, the more you say it,
- 8:08the more you believe it. So write it as many times as you
- 8:10want, but at least one time. And then if you want to print it
- 8:13out several times to have them around the place that you visit,
- 8:16the places you visit the most, that's awesome.
- 8:18Do that too, but one time with your hand.
- 8:22The next thing you have to do, it starts saying what you wrote
- 8:28down out loud, looking yourself in the mirror every day.
- 8:34It's going to be hard because the hardest thing to do is tell
- 8:38yourself that something is true that you really don't believe
- 8:42yet. And some of you have probably
- 8:44written goals that some people might laugh at or might say
- 8:48that's never going to happen. Or you know that it's not
- 8:52possible for you to do and you might feel uncomfortable with it
- 8:56because you don't believe it yet.
- 8:58But you can't worry about what other people think.
- 9:00You can't worry about what other people might say right now.
- 9:03The only chance you have of achieving your goal is to
- 9:08believe it yourself. So regardless of what other
- 9:13people might say, you need to look in that mirror every single
- 9:16day and keep your eyes focused and tell yourself what you wrote
- 9:21on the paper. For me, I looked at myself in
- 9:24the mirror every day and I said I am the best 400m runner in the
- 9:30world. I am the best 400m runner in the
- 9:32world, I am the best 400m runner in the world.
- 9:36I said it over and over again until I can focus my eyes and
- 9:40not cut them away and I could look right through myself to the
- 9:44point where I believed it. Then I would walk away.
- 9:48This is something that will help you train your mind to believe
- 9:52what you're saying and when you believe what you've said you're
- 9:56going to do or who you're going to be.
- 9:58It's very difficult for your life to not align or start
- 10:03aligning with that goal being your reality.
- 10:09The thing that people don't often realize in the process of
- 10:12trying to get to their goals and the process of trying to get to
- 10:16a point where they believe that what they are trying to achieve
- 10:19is possible, is that when you don't get instant results or you
- 10:23don't get results quickly, there's a certain amount of
- 10:27patience that you have to have along this journey.
- 10:32The patience that you need also is coupled with some
- 10:38determination coupled with some never give up mentality.
- 10:43It's it's more than just waiting.
- 10:47You also have to make the sacrifices that are necessary
- 10:51for you to achieve the goals. You also have to have the
- 10:55mindset that no matter what happens, you're going to keep
- 10:59going. You have to start with your mind
- 11:03in that position. You have to start the journey
- 11:06saying it's not going to be easy and I'm not going to give up.
- 11:11You have to start the journey with that as the foundation of
- 11:16how you plan to proceed because then when you get knocked down
- 11:21or if things don't go as planned along the way, it doesn't take
- 11:25you as long to process it. It doesn't take you as long to
- 11:27get back up. It doesn't take you as long to
- 11:30try to find a way to keep going. You've already put it in your
- 11:33mind that you're not going to give up no matter what.
- 11:36So I encourage you all to write down never give up with your
- 11:42hand and put that right next to your goal and put it somewhere
- 11:47you have to see it every day. These things are the
- 11:51requirements, in my opinion, of setting yourself up for the best
- 11:56possible opportunity to achieve your goal.
- 12:00The next thing I would highlight as one of the key ways to get to
- 12:05your goal is that now that you know what it is and now that
- 12:08you've trained, you're training yourself to believe it.
- 12:11You actually have to start making the sacrifices to get it
- 12:15done. One of my pet peeves with a lot
- 12:19of athletes that I've worked with along the way and some that
- 12:22I just knew personally as teammates.
- 12:26One of the things that frustrated me the most was that
- 12:30sometimes they expected results and would get upset if they
- 12:34didn't get them, but they weren't doing what they needed
- 12:38to do to actually have earned it.
- 12:41And I'm just going to keep it real with you guys.
- 12:44You can't be eaten McDonald's burgers and staying all night
- 12:50out partying and staying up till Lord knows what in the morning
- 12:54playing Roblox or whatever game you have on your phone or iPads
- 13:00and then expect to have all the things that you desire.
- 13:04Doesn't work that way. And the best thing you can do,
- 13:08hoped for in that situation is that your talent level just
- 13:11supersedes everyone. Or you just get lucky and have a
- 13:15good run or you have a good competition.
- 13:19But at the end of the day, at some point, it's going to
- 13:22require that you sacrifice, 'cause my motto is greatness has
- 13:27a price and that price is sacrifice.
- 13:32That is what I 100% believe. Greatness has a price and it
- 13:36costs sacrifice. You're going to have to give up
- 13:39something to get something. You're going to have to give in
- 13:43order to receive. And in this case, when it comes
- 13:48to accomplishing your goals, you're going to have to give.
- 13:53Give up yourself, give up your time, give up your energy, give
- 13:56up your dedication, give up your focus, give up your hard work in
- 14:03order to receive. And it also plays a big part in
- 14:08your confidence. A lot of times people go to the
- 14:12starting line or into the competition with, I should say,
- 14:19lacking confidence because in their mind, they know that they
- 14:23really haven't done everything that they could have done to be
- 14:26their best. They know that they cut corners
- 14:29somewhere They and as long as they have that in their mind,
- 14:33they're going to step on the line or be or step into the
- 14:37competition with the mindset of I don't deserve to receive what
- 14:44I'm setting out to do. I haven't done the right things.
- 14:48I would walk on the line in 2012 with the confidence that I could
- 14:54do exactly what I came there to do to be the best 400m runner in
- 15:00the world. That was my goal and I would
- 15:06walk on the line knowing that for that entire year, I gave it
- 15:11everything. I had every practice, every day,
- 15:14rain or shine, Didn't cut any corners, didn't miss the ice
- 15:17bath, didn't miss the chiropractor, didn't miss
- 15:20massage, went to church every Sunday and everything it's been
- 15:23Bible study every Thursday. I had the confidence that I
- 15:28deserved to receive what I had been working for every day
- 15:32because I had made the sacrifice.
- 15:35Give yourself the opportunity to win on the mental edge that
- 15:42gives you a mental edge. I'm not saying other people
- 15:48aren't going to come to the line with the same mentality because
- 15:50that's the champion's mindset, but just know when you step on
- 15:55the line, you can step on the line or step into your
- 15:58competition with the mindset that you deserve to be there.
- 16:02Now that you all know how to set a goal, now that you know how to
- 16:07visualize or visually believe in that goal using visualization
- 16:13and repetition, writing, listening, hearing, speaking the
- 16:17goal over and over again is imperative to believing it.
- 16:22Although belief is the primary key to achieving your goal and
- 16:26hard work is the form of currency that it's going to take
- 16:30in order to be able to afford it, the last thing you have to
- 16:36know is that you're not always going to be able to control the
- 16:41outcome of every situation, but you can always control your
- 16:47output. A lot of times we'll go down a
- 16:51road and we'll try our very best and we've sacrificed and we've
- 16:56done everything we need to do and we may not get the gold
- 17:01medal. I know that because that
- 17:04happened to me in 2012. I would run in the 2012 Olympic
- 17:10Games, I would get the bronze medal and I was in the lead at
- 17:15the 100 at the last 100 meters of the 400 meter race.
- 17:20A lot of people are often confused by when I say that this
- 17:23is the best race of my career, and that's because it came after
- 17:27three years of loss and failure following my knee surgery.
- 17:32I had been working harder than I had ever worked in my entire
- 17:35life to get that bronze medal and I would never look down at
- 17:39it. I would never be disappointed
- 17:40when I was giving my very best. I could not control the outcome
- 17:46of the race, but I controlled giving it everything I had for
- 17:52every step and I believed that I had earned the the results.
- 17:59So the one thing you're going to have to do is have some thick
- 18:02skin. If you don't get the outcome you
- 18:06want, the first go round, second go round.
- 18:10For me, this is my third Olympics, the third go round.
- 18:14If you don't get the outcome you want, that doesn't mean it's
- 18:17time to hang it up. If you don't like the results
- 18:21and you're healthy enough and you have time.
- 18:24And this applies across the board in life, not just in
- 18:27sports. If you're healthy enough and you
- 18:30have time, you can always turn your loss, your failures, and
- 18:37your disappointments into the blueprint of what it's going to
- 18:41take to succeed. Every time you lose, you have an
- 18:46opportunity to learn. Every time you lose, you should
- 18:51learn something from it, and those losses will create the
- 18:56blueprint of what it's actually going to take to succeed.
- 19:01Every lost race I've ever had taught me what I needed to know
- 19:05to improve in order to get better.
- 19:11And although in 2012 I would have liked to try to come back
- 19:15again in 2016 and I did, my body got tired and I ran out of steam
- 19:22and what would be an illustrious 13 year career again I said if
- 19:28you have the health and you have the time.
- 19:32I did not have the health so I could not again pursue a
- 19:37different outcome. But a lot of times we can if we
- 19:42just continue to push forward. Have thick skin, have short term
- 19:47memory when it comes to losses and remember that loss only
- 19:51lasts as long as it takes for you to get back up and try
- 19:56again. Loss is a temporary sensation.
- 19:59It comes and goes. The.
- 20:03Loss that you feel temporarily can immediately be eliminated if
- 20:09you get back up and try again. See, the only thing that lasts
- 20:14longer than loss is regret. And if you don't try again, you
- 20:21may look back 20 years later, 30 years later, maybe when you're a
- 20:25grandma or grandpa and say, I wish I would have.
- 20:29I could have if I had only tried again.
- 20:34And regret can follow you all the way to your grave.
- 20:38So I suggest that along your journey, you put into your mind
- 20:43that you might fall, you might fail, you might get some scrapes
- 20:47and bruises. But if you get back up and try
- 20:50again, learn from your loss. Learn from your failures, learn
- 20:53from your disappointments. You can figure out what it takes
- 20:56to win. And that is the mentality of a
- 21:00champion. A champion is really a person
- 21:04that never gives up. A person that will fight for
- 21:07their goals every day. A person that will push past the
- 21:10loss, the failures and disappointments and use them as
- 21:13the foundation of their success. Every person has this as a
- 21:18capability. Every person can do this.
- 21:22And when you realize that a champion is not just the person
- 21:27that crosses the finish line first, you can win in life in
- 21:31more than one way. Go into every competition with
- 21:34the mindset of you can, you must, you will.
- 21:40Thanks for listening guys. Best of luck this season and
- 21:44always remember you can do it if you believe.
