- 1:26Curtis and Brian sent you Curtis how we feeling tonight on this
- 1:30Tuesday. It's a Tuesday night and we
- 1:33don't have a recap first time. All year no recap.
- 1:38We are, we are done with recapping the Hokies.
- 1:43Now, whenever to recap in the Hokies, We're done recapping the
- 1:46Hokies this season. This see, we're done recapping
- 1:51games. We constantly recap the Hokies
- 1:53and all elements of it, but one of those things, me and Brian
- 1:56were saying, I'm going to be traveling for work next week.
- 1:59Do you want to punch it this week?
- 2:01Like yeah. Lets punch it.
- 2:02It's also one of those things to a told, Brian.
- 2:05It's really weird because I'm used to putting something
- 2:09together this week, right? Yep.
- 2:13You were used to putting something together this Because
- 2:15there's usually a game in like, okay, let's do it, we can figure
- 2:20out something, there's a ton of news coming out, we got a bunch
- 2:22of games to pick at the end, to have some fun and then obviously
- 2:27with, you know, the portal opening up and we're going to
- 2:31talk a little bit about that and some other things, but we're
- 2:35going to lead it off tonight with the hardwood and not the
- 2:39Gridiron. And we're going to talk about
- 2:42the Hokies Hoops a little bit. And, you know, No me and Brian
- 2:46we're talking here we are. The Hokies tip their first game.
- 2:5021 days ago they have played 8 games since I have and we're
- 2:56being honest here, I have been able to watch really two games
- 2:59beginning to end. Or yeah, I three games.
- 3:04I'm going to send a Minnesota last night.
- 3:05Three games, beginning to end in about two sparingly, where it's
- 3:10in and out in and out the others have been following on Gamecast
- 3:14in my phone. What about you Ron?
- 3:17Yeah, I put away for start to finish probably pieces of to
- 3:22others and the other two I was just kind of following along
- 3:27when I was when we I was I was traveling during the During the
- 3:33the Charleston classic. So, missed one of those and then
- 3:39got to see more than I thought. I would though because of the
- 3:43way, everything worked out with when we were kind of not doing
- 3:45stuff during that time but still miss one of those and then you
- 3:50know, missed another one there. But I've been following about as
- 3:53close as I can so far. So try, try it as close as we
- 3:58can with you know, jobs families.
- 4:02He's, you know, trying to watch, pay attention to football and
- 4:05all that stuff. It is, it's, I mean, attempted
- 4:10to file a basketball. Season is in absolute grind
- 4:15grind because there's so many games there throughout the week.
- 4:22Like, last night, I thought we were the 9:00 and I look at
- 4:24this, like, oh crap the 7:00 actually, maybe I'll watch some
- 4:28of this without falling asleep. There you go.
- 4:32And I did. But before we talk about last
- 4:34night's game, let's talk about the close call versus Charleston
- 4:37Southern Brian, because that was a game.
- 4:39I got to watch fairly off and on, in and out.
- 4:43And it was just one of those where, you know, it was the it
- 4:47was, it was Black Friday. I don't know if necessary, the
- 4:51team looking through the obviously, you're going to have
- 4:53a lesser crowd there, but I mean, they got taken to the
- 4:58Limit by Charleston Southern Last Friday Night.
- 5:02Yeah, you know, wasn't a great shooting night especially from
- 5:07three. No no so you know you actually
- 5:13got field goal, wise Charleston. Southern was a hair better than
- 5:17you. Three point wise, they're almost
- 5:19ten points. Ten percentage points better
- 5:21than you were. You know, free throws is kind of
- 5:25where we won the game. If we're being honest, it is it
- 5:30is I mean, it's not even a joke, we Want to because, you know,
- 5:32rebounding even I mean, somebody made a point.
- 5:36I can't remember who it was. If you remember who it was, you
- 5:40know, shout them out. Making the point of why do you
- 5:42guys have career nights? You know, there was there were
- 5:46two guys that made an abundant amount of 34.
- 5:48Charleston Southern they won like couldn't miss in.
- 5:52One was like over 40 percent. You got guys like career average
- 5:56or like 7:00 at night. Go off on us all the time.
- 5:59They basically double of what they are scoring.
- 6:01But you know the team hung in there they pull it out at the
- 6:05end with the 69-64 victory but then last night, the team woke
- 6:12up a little bit. I think obviously ACC Big Ten
- 6:16challenge which we'll discuss in a few minutes as this is the
- 6:19last year of it. Again, it's a big ten opponent.
- 6:23The students are back that section was absolutely rocking
- 6:26last night. Yeah, it looks like a Norman
- 6:30Castle. Yeah.
- 6:31Look like castle look like, yeah.
- 6:34So, you know, Hokies take a 67 57 when they win by 10.
- 6:39They own. It wasn't really that close.
- 6:41It wasn't that close, it wasn't that close and you know I'm
- 6:45sitting here watching it and I have to go do a couple things
- 6:48and I may be away five minutes and at that point it was a like
- 6:52six point game and I come back in the run.
- 6:54It started. And that run just propelled this
- 6:57game at the end of the first half to making it a crew for
- 7:01those keys. Yep.
- 7:04Yeah and I mean, really looking at the second half to I mean
- 7:08other than probably the last what?
- 7:10Two or three minutes of the game absolute control in the second
- 7:14half as well? Oh no reason.
- 7:15I mean there were times in that second half sitting here
- 7:18watching it. No keys are up 20 points.
- 7:21It doesn't even look like it doesn't even look like they're
- 7:23struggling. They're the balls moving.
- 7:26You know they destroy Minnesota on the boards last night a plus
- 7:3215 don't go to the line that often which kind of surprised me
- 7:37usually see a lot more fouls in these games but just overall it
- 7:42was a good team win and you know Justin what does what he does,
- 7:47right? 16 points, you know, nine total
- 7:51rebounds, he stole the ball, he blocked some, he got some assist
- 7:56out of paint. Yeah, I'll be here a guy.
- 7:59That's now every game you can expect a door close to a
- 8:02double-double on her somewhere somewhere between 16 and 20
- 8:07points. I mean he's become that type of
- 8:10player, definitely elevated production at the offensive end
- 8:15this year. He's not just you know, No.
- 8:18A big that has some some ability that can also pass.
- 8:22Well, he's got a lot more scoring to his game this year.
- 8:27That's really, really helped up in the post there.
- 8:30And we've seen, you know, Sean Padula take the, the big step
- 8:33that we were anticipating this offseason.
- 8:35So that's been a big bowl stir for the theme as well.
- 8:38We just need to get him some help handling the basketball.
- 8:41We do, we do. I mean Sean Padula, some and
- 8:44it's been mentioned by numerous people, he has taken the step
- 8:46this you know, 17 Last night. And in that first half in the
- 8:51early part of the second half, like he was, there were times he
- 8:53was just dominate their times. He was just dominating with the
- 8:57ball in his hands and it's great to see.
- 8:59But to your point and maybe that's why the lead slip back to
- 9:0310. Is there times where he had to
- 9:05go off the floor? He kind of ran out of gas in you
- 9:08know, right now if you know he goes off the floor, it's kind of
- 9:12a kind of a mishmash of who's going to handle the ball and
- 9:15bring it up the court and no one is gonna Good enough like he is
- 9:19so you know, the big key right now and we keep hearing the name
- 9:24and how big of a recruiter was is when does Rodney rice come
- 9:27back? Because the quicker Rodney rice
- 9:30gets back, it is going to alleviate you know some of that
- 9:35pressure from certain guys. You know who aren't you know,
- 9:39natural ball handlers and it goes to Rodney and it's Rodney
- 9:44Sean and then the other guy sparingly when needed.
- 9:47Yeah. And now we had talked about
- 9:49originally that we were hoping to get him back for the classic
- 9:52that didn't happen. Now, it sounds like more, like,
- 9:55kind of right at the end of into the semester is potential.
- 10:00So we'll see if that is still a moving Target or if that's more
- 10:05of kind of a hopeful hopeful spot for him.
- 10:10It'd be nice to get him in there and get some some action in
- 10:15there before we get into the heart of a CC play, you know,
- 10:21we're going to get the one early against North Carolina, but you
- 10:26know, if we can get him back by the get him acclimated into the
- 10:29game by the time we get into the meat of the ACC schedule.
- 10:33I think that's probably the most desirable outcome.
- 10:35Absolutely. And it's going to be key
- 10:37because, you know, last night, the team had 14, turnovers their
- 10:42teams in the ACC. You do that again, it's not
- 10:44going to be a double digit wins. Can be a double-digit loss and
- 10:47obviously we don't want that. Happen.
- 10:49I'll tell you something else last night that you know sort of
- 10:52was a little bit impressive to me him drawing charges is always
- 10:57been impressive. I want to know if there is a
- 10:59stat out there for that because he drew, I think what three more
- 11:02last night but just in general, you know, the way he draws
- 11:06charges, how he plays position defense it's getting better and
- 11:10better and even when he's not on fire from outside or he's not
- 11:14you know giving you 10 to 12 points, what Hunters doing On
- 11:18the defensive end is great. Yakitori is definitely taking a
- 11:22big step with his defense. This year continues to impress
- 11:26on that end of the floor, not quite taking as many shots as we
- 11:30saw at points last year, but we've also seen that, you know,
- 11:34he's not a guy that Takes a lot of shots consistently usually he
- 11:39when he's hot, he's going to take the shot if it's not quite
- 11:44Fallen, he's not going to force anything.
- 11:47He's not just he's not that volume tape sheet.
- 11:48Everybody is a very streaky shooter when he when he gets
- 11:51hot. He's very hot.
- 11:53Absolutely another guy last night that definitely chipped in
- 11:57with you know getting people rest being physical giving up
- 12:02fouls and last night as well scoring was petite.
- 12:06You know they had those four personal fouls but he's a big
- 12:09bodied guy. That's okay.
- 12:12That's what he needs to be there for.
- 12:13But 11 minutes and eight points. I mean, you tell me he gets us
- 12:18five every night and comes in and helps play good defense and
- 12:21be a physical presence. It's I mean, I think that's
- 12:23going to go a long way, as the season goes for the rotation for
- 12:30the rotation of this team. Especially once rice gets back.
- 12:34Absolutely. And we saw, you know what, Lynn
- 12:37kid was out there for 16 minutes.
- 12:40We saw columns out there for 21, so we saw, we saw some of the
- 12:47bench last night and they, they showed a little bit of little
- 12:51bit of action there. Again, it you said especially
- 12:54Poteet there, but I was impressed by what kid was able
- 12:58to bring to the table as well. Yeah.
- 13:00And and it's all about, in this case, once you get rice back,
- 13:04it's it's never be, I don't think with Mike young, you're
- 13:07never going to see a guy. Do a Collins, did consistently
- 13:10Off the Bench and get 20 plus minutes.
- 13:12I just don't think you see that but it's if they know their role
- 13:16which I think petite knows his role.
- 13:18I think kids hopefully learns his role.
- 13:20It's once you learn your role with Mike.
- 13:23Young. That's how you get inserted
- 13:25because I think the way my quirks and you take a look, the
- 13:28starters, the lowest was months with 24, the highest was Padula
- 13:32with 35 to do with 35. Makes a lot of sense, but you
- 13:37might young is not a. I'm going to sub three guys at
- 13:39once. It's normally I'm going to sub
- 13:411. Yeah, I'm gonna solve another
- 13:43one, and another one and it's going to be that rotation when
- 13:46he's never going to take his Coral floor and it seems like
- 13:50that's the case this year. So we'll see how Goes yeah.
- 13:53Usually usually two guys at a time is about the most you're
- 13:56going to see ya. But Brian, there is a concerning
- 14:00stat for Virginia Tech and how we play basketball, and that's
- 14:09three point percentage last night, 36%, We haven't shot over
- 14:1540% since ODU that with Penn State, both Charleston game,
- 14:20that's four games we've played eight.
- 14:21So half the games, you know, we have not shown over 40% in to be
- 14:28honest. You give me your opinion.
- 14:31I don't want to see last year again, but unless that gets up,
- 14:37and I'm going to pull the stats while you talk about it.
- 14:39Unless that gets up to hovering closer to 40% consistently,
- 14:44every We game there's going to be some long nights in ACC play.
- 14:48Yeah I'd say The only positive I would take away from this is
- 14:52that this team is already shown the ability to win games even
- 14:56when they're cold from three which is encouraging as we get
- 15:01to ACC play. But we know that you know, the
- 15:04competition's going to ratchet up as as we get into the
- 15:07conference play, we're not going to be able to have those
- 15:11back-to-back-to-back games where we're not. not not getting over
- 15:16forty percent from three because I mean that we're a team that
- 15:22wouldn't say we live and die by the three but our our offense
- 15:25certainly cannot reach this Pinnacle unless we're hitting
- 15:29the three point shot and just showing a difference.
- 15:32And this is last year, full year versus this year just through a
- 15:35games last year. Hokies 39 three from three point
- 15:39range this year. 35 7. The in four percent of the
- 15:44volume. You know, when you're taking 20
- 15:46shots of night, that's a few extra fallen and in tight games
- 15:50that is the difference between winning and losing.
- 15:53I mean, it's definitely the difference between winning the
- 15:54Charleston classic and not it's true.
- 15:57Then we will say that. And and I tell you it, one of
- 16:01the big things is not to knock the guy but it's Maddox man.
- 16:07What the the last Maddox we saw is not the Maddox that picked up
- 16:11at the beginning of this year already.
- 16:13Yeah, the shots not following the way I think we thought it
- 16:16would. I thought, you know, I think we
- 16:18thought he was going to roll right?
- 16:19Right back in and pick up where he left off last season.
- 16:22We're not seeing that at the gate, some areas of his game
- 16:26having proved, which is helped make this, not as much of a
- 16:31problem. True.
- 16:33But, you know, at some point we're going to need Shot to
- 16:36start falling for us to reach the spot.
- 16:39We want to in conference play. Yeah, and so far this year, it's
- 16:43at 26 percent. And I know he was a he was a
- 16:49kind of a bench guy last year and then kind of got more time
- 16:52he shot. 50% from three last year and yet he only averaged
- 16:55like six and a half a game, but that number is got to get closer
- 16:59to 40. I'll be if you're telling me
- 17:01he's a 38 39, I think, I think we can live and we can live with
- 17:05that 25. I don't think we can live with,
- 17:08and I say that just us as fans taking our hats off slanting,
- 17:12pulling our hair out watching games, because You mentioned
- 17:17earlier with Couture. It's a little different when
- 17:20Darius Maddox. Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 17:24He is a volume shooter when he starts shooting.
- 17:27So, you know, we'll see big game obviously is on Saturday with
- 17:35Caroline. A human sundae with Carolina
- 17:37coming into town at three in you.
- 17:40Yeah, three in Castle. It's going to tell a lot about
- 17:44this team. Win or lose.
- 17:49Yeah. And you know in some ways it's
- 17:51probably not as great that we're getting Carolina.
- 17:54Coming off of a loss there. Well, hello a loss and then they
- 18:00got dropped 17 spots in the. I don't get the front.
- 18:06It's actually that's a very big. Yeah.
- 18:09I mean if you just said eight or nine spots, I'd have been like
- 18:12sure. 17 spots and they lost to a top 20 team in quadruple
- 18:19overtime. It's like the it's like this I
- 18:23mean they certainly aren't what we went.
- 18:24You know the poll said they were we know that we knew we knew
- 18:28they were over ranked to start the year.
- 18:31Why they should ranked teams until the end of December and
- 18:34basketball. There we go.
- 18:37But the honest truth is where the AP just just trying to set
- 18:42us up. Now, they play Technics, let's
- 18:45just go ahead and drop Carolina way down here to put something
- 18:48on their minds as they going to Castle.
- 18:53I probably mentioned just a couple minutes ago about this is
- 18:57the last game of the ACC Big Ten challenge.
- 19:02It's 23, years old, you know, obviously out of my mom buddy.
- 19:06Malik from work mentioned. Like he's a little bit younger
- 19:10than us about 10 years. He's like, I grew up on that.
- 19:13I expected that every November. Yep, really good.
- 19:17Enter conference. And, you know, and I'd say for
- 19:20us, it's Allure. We were a little bit older but
- 19:22it was one of those times in, you know, you know, High School
- 19:26College Avenue week after Thanksgiving.
- 19:28You're expecting to me some good basketball games on mid-week,
- 19:32right? Exactly this this time of year.
- 19:35I mean, you kind of get those higher profile matchups that
- 19:39you're not necessarily used to write.
- 19:41So it was always good. Good matchup.
- 19:45And I know we're moving into a new era with the, with the SEC
- 19:49coming in. That's going to be interesting.
- 19:53Who is, who is your, who do you want first?
- 19:57Well, it's obvious to me. You gotta let Tech play em with
- 20:02Buzz there. And, and the honest truth is,
- 20:08just because they have to put it in Castle.
- 20:11You can't put it down in Aggieland, you have to put it at
- 20:13Castle. Make it matter more.
- 20:16Make it matter a lot more. What about you?
- 20:20Are you on that train or you know, a little different.
- 20:25You know what, I'd like to see us?
- 20:27Finally, get over the Florida hump.
- 20:29So I'd like to get Florida. Okay, okay.
- 20:32That's a good one. That's a good one.
- 20:34That's a good one. And, you know, a lot of
- 20:36interesting matchups and obviously a lot of people are
- 20:38saying well why did this happen? A the Big Ten they're losing.
- 20:45The ESP is essentially losing every right to the big tent.
- 20:51This wasn't just a football for everybody that says, it's a
- 20:53football move, it is mostly about football, but they've lost
- 20:58a all the basketball stuff and like that.
- 21:01So now why wouldn't they pivot to their two biggest, you know,
- 21:08investments in the ACC in the SEC and for the ACC you're from
- 21:13doing this challenge, you're probably going to see a revenue
- 21:16bump. Obviously you're going to
- 21:20probably see See more ACC games in the weekday getting ESPN,
- 21:25ESPN2 treatment versus being shuffled around to the network.
- 21:28When it's not a big game, so more notoriety and you know for
- 21:36us probably as a region a few more matchups.
- 21:40You know, we talked about a.m. and Brian mentioned Florida, I
- 21:43mean what about Tennessee yeah, I mean, you know, when the when
- 21:49Tennessee when that becomes sort of a Yeah, when they decide to
- 21:55have those two teams play that a lot of people will come up out
- 21:58for that. So in, who knows?
- 22:03I think it'll be interesting. And again, you still have just
- 22:06thinking higher level ACC, you still have your blue blood, I
- 22:11mean, you know, they, you know, Kentucky with Carolina and Duke,
- 22:17you know, Florida, Tennessee, obviously, being good, you've
- 22:21got enough Firepower. On both sides where it's still
- 22:25good, stay intriguing for sure. And I mean, we've seen the SEC,
- 22:29take big steps in basketball, probably the last decade to
- 22:33where, you know, they were kind of very middling for a while and
- 22:37now they're very much in the kind of the top-tier there.
- 22:40So, 100% 100%, let's talk real quick.
- 22:45Two notes, women's hoop. Now, ranked number 9 in the
- 22:50country. Give them a clap continue to
- 22:52win. Um including smashing a lot of
- 22:59the other night which Longwood was a tournament team last year.
- 23:03And I think they expected to compete in the Big South again
- 23:07this year. Don't quote me, but I don't
- 23:09think they're gonna quite reach the heights.
- 23:11They did last year, but they were certainly supposed to be
- 23:13competitive in that conference and they got their ass waxed.
- 23:18What was the psalmist was like 87, 37, 8, it was an 80 9 20. 88
- 23:24or something like that. Oh, I thought they broke 30.
- 23:30That hurts. That hurts a lot.
- 23:34He's pulling it up here. Yeah.
- 23:35Benjamin earlier when we were talking about it and it was
- 23:37like, we gotta mention this because eighty nine.
- 23:39Twenty-eight. I was right. 89, 2861.
- 23:43Did Longwood even break double digits in any quarter.
- 23:48Hang on. Let's see how this is just
- 23:51purely me entertaining myself and I know they got 11 in the
- 23:56third. Oh God, did they get under five
- 24:00and a quarter? This oh they did.
- 24:02Yeah. They open a opening quarter.
- 24:03It was 20 to 40 and we put the slam the door to 6:33 in the
- 24:13forest. Under 10's on back sighs.
- 24:18I think I'm doing the math here so 7-Eleven in six in the third
- 24:24a six-point quarter 66 in the second so you can support for
- 24:28611 7. Barely broke doubled it out,
- 24:31guys? Well, you know what Kenny is got
- 24:34good thing going with the women's Hoops team, obviously
- 24:37nationally-recognized up there now and obviously, you know, as
- 24:42well as with the ACC sec. Amens challenge is going to be
- 24:46coming in a woman's challenges well and obviously that probably
- 24:50is much better for the women's product.
- 24:54Yeah because the SEC women's basketball overall is better.
- 24:59And you know the ACC as well with take the one go with
- 25:02Louisville playing well with a couple other really good
- 25:04programs state so there's South Carolina in the mix there with
- 25:09those boys for that. No kill some confidence you
- 25:17playing the the lady Gamecocks down there because they are
- 25:21crushing it. They should let UVA play them.
- 25:25It's Dawn. Playing with his ball is an
- 25:27elite player that you hate 30-plus years ago.
- 25:30There we go. Hi.
- 25:32So what will close the book on talking about Hoops here at lot
- 25:35of fun? Again, Hoops is such a long
- 25:39season. You know what, we'll try to hit
- 25:42games as we're on here and there obviously, you know, We'll talk
- 25:45about some of the games when we're back in a couple weeks and
- 25:49you know how the teams looking over all.
- 25:52All right, Brian? Let's flip.
- 25:53Let's talk about some college football and using notes and the
- 25:57college football game of headsets as return, The starting
- 26:05off 15 openings. Yeah, it's that's has a 10%.
- 26:13That's a big damn number right there that we had to fill in
- 26:16here and we're moving pretty quickly to fill it in.
- 26:20You know, we're about what a third of the way there.
- 26:23We're a third of the way there. And we are only a few days
- 26:27after, you know, Black Monday or where a day after Black Monday.
- 26:31Excuse me. But one of those roles got
- 26:33filled last week Solid didn't mention it just a lot more going
- 26:37on but UNC Charlotte who had fired will Healey earlier in the
- 26:41year hired, the associate head coach for Michigan Biff.
- 26:45Poggi poggi did some research on him, long time, high school
- 26:50coach up in. Maryland cannot remember the
- 26:54high school's name. What won multiple?
- 26:57Multiple state titles? Put a lot of D1 prospects
- 27:00including Blake Quorum at Michigan, where he is, Added to
- 27:04go and Coach but you know it seems like they Club.
- 27:11Lit and UNC Charlotte is being shut down.
- 27:14And it sounds like put in their glove lit is kaput kaput dead.
- 27:20And they're bringing the guy named Biff in.
- 27:22I don't think there's gonna be a lot of clubland.
- 27:24I think there might be a lot of a lot of running.
- 27:32I think so. I think so, I wonder if they're
- 27:35going to throw but head up out there look, you know, I'm
- 27:39interested in. Alright, let's start with some
- 27:41of the other bigger hires in, let's start with probably the
- 27:45biggest program higher and it's Nebraska, and it's Matt rule,
- 27:52you know, You do got fired from the Panthers just to you know,
- 27:56couple months ago such success at Baylor Sussex s at Temple.
- 28:01He hits an eight-year contract down there.
- 28:05My buddy again Malik multiple shout out to tell them tomorrow
- 28:08at work, listen Malek's like he's got the best agent in the
- 28:12world. He's getting like 68 million
- 28:13dollars from Tepper and now, he's got an eight-year deal from
- 28:16the Prescott. What do you think of the higher
- 28:20bronze with ruled on a Nebraska? I think it's A decent fit, you
- 28:26know, I think he kind of knows the lay of the land there in
- 28:31general still within kind of that recruiting footprint, that
- 28:34we, that he was used to before. We'll see if anyone can bring
- 28:40Nebraska back from the from the brink here.
- 28:44It's kind of Unfortunately mirrored us a little bit and
- 28:49kind of been in the doldrums but competitive and then kind of
- 28:53fell off the map a little bit. So we'll see if we can kind of
- 28:58get back where we need to with this program and see if rules
- 29:00the guy to do it. What with rule I think it's
- 29:03going to be more interesting to see if he can get back just at
- 29:05the Bellini level. Yeah the eight nine wins a year
- 29:10occasionally attend because that wasn't good enough for me I
- 29:12think Pelini was a even though he was a hothead Polina.
- 29:16Football guy, I think Pelini I absolutely got KN too early
- 29:20because Nebraska thought they thought it was still the 90s and
- 29:27what wasn't and I get mad. I get having goals and I get not
- 29:31being content with just being an eight or nine win team.
- 29:35But you gotta support the guy that's there and see if you can
- 29:39build around him to get there. Instead of just firing a guy and
- 29:43thinking you're going to, you know, go hire the the next
- 29:46up-and-coming. Owen, gfiveg.
- 29:47I think that it's going to happen.
- 29:50It's true man, it's true. I think the big thing with rule
- 29:53though and the one thing that you kind of read was how he
- 29:57tried to create a culture in the NFL like he did in college.
- 30:00That doesn't work in the NFL no collagen does though and I think
- 30:04in a place like Nebraska it can work now obviously he's made a
- 30:09huge move and getting Satterfield from South Carolina
- 30:11to come over. And that guy he's familiar with
- 30:15it's a guy we've already. Seen obviously he's paid
- 30:18dividends for Shane going to be interesting to see who Shane
- 30:22fills in with that spot. But you know Nebraska going with
- 30:27the eight-year deal says a lot because it's almost like they're
- 30:32giving him a two-year freebie and then probably a three year.
- 30:37You know, let's see what you got.
- 30:40But I mean I'll give the higher an a he was the biggest name out
- 30:44there. Right.
- 30:46Biggest name out there. Definitely the biggest thing out
- 30:50there that didn't already have a job somewhere else.
- 30:52The biggest free agent out there, maybe that's what we
- 30:54should say. All right, let's flip the this
- 30:56one. Next Braun, not a bigger name
- 31:00because I'm going to go with the big names and then we're going
- 31:02to hit the actual affecting of the Hokies at the end here.
- 31:07But Arizona State hires Kenny Dillingham, Kenny Dillingham is
- 31:1232 years old. So go ahead and put that out
- 31:16there. He was born in 1990. he
- 31:22obviously recently had been at Oregon as their offensive
- 31:25coordinator for this one year before that two years at Florida
- 31:30State under Mike nor fell and then before that he was with he
- 31:35was at Auburn under gustn 2019 and then back with Norville in
- 31:412018 at Memphis in 2017, in Memphis young guy, Arizona State
- 31:47grad, And I think Arizona State's in a little bit of
- 31:52plummet, right now, of what's going on, you know, because of
- 31:59the whole home situation and all the stuff that was going on
- 32:01there. I feel like they just decided to
- 32:03say, hey you know what, we're going to do?
- 32:05We're kind of just going to go one somebody who was here less
- 32:09than 15 years ago, probably understands the culture and all
- 32:13that stuff about what we need to be competitive here at Arizona
- 32:17State. Yeah, it's going to be
- 32:21interesting to see what they are able to do out there because I
- 32:25feel like they've kind of lost their way.
- 32:27I feel like that was kind of a somewhat consistent program for
- 32:32a while and it's going to be seen if they can kind of get
- 32:39back in that mix in the Pac-12 to really be competitive because
- 32:45they really kind of fallen off of map a little bit there.
- 32:48The last three years in the Pac-12 is getting easier, I
- 32:52mean, in the next few years would, you know, when USC and
- 32:55UCLA moving its going to become an easier conference to compete
- 32:59in and you know, Again, I think this is just a culture higher
- 33:06regardless, what the offense looks like in all that.
- 33:09I think it's just if it's someone, he went here, he's one
- 33:13of us. He understands what we do, you
- 33:15understand where we can be and what we can do, and sometimes
- 33:20that's all you need. You need a voice and someone
- 33:23who's familiar with everything. So, I'll probably, I'll say a
- 33:26see on this one. Obviously, it's all come three
- 33:31years from now, you know. For the guys who can do those
- 33:34shows? I tip my hat to you because
- 33:37research because, you know, yeah I'm right there with you, on the
- 33:42sea to be continued to see what this how this turns out.
- 33:46But all right. Now the next two, I don't think
- 33:49we're going to grate a. See, the first one.
- 33:52Is it broke Sunday. I know I sent you guys the thing
- 33:56about 11:00 Luke fickle, Leaf, Cincinnati and in kind of Of a
- 34:03shocker to some people. Specially Wisconsin had looked
- 34:06better under Jim Leonard. Luke people to Wisconsin.
- 34:12Go Brian. What do you think?
- 34:14Yeah, I mean that I'm gonna go a minus here.
- 34:16I mean that's that's as big of a higher I think is Wisconsin
- 34:19could have pulled other than sticking with with Leonard and,
- 34:24you know, it's a guy that's going to come in and immediately
- 34:26have I think success. I think he's going to have have
- 34:31that locker room how quickly he kind of gets things going in
- 34:35terms of being competitive for the actual conference title.
- 34:39I think is in question, but I think you'll definitely kind of
- 34:42Get them back to that you know, roughly around 10 win level that
- 34:47we're kind of used to Wisconsin being at Henry out the gate.
- 34:51They're not that far from it either.
- 34:53No, I still think Paul Chris pissed, somebody off, I do, I
- 34:57feel think he pissed somebody off in that Administration and
- 35:00they were just like you get start this season all bad,
- 35:03you're going bye-bye, and he did.
- 35:05And that's what happened. As far as it goes.
- 35:08I'm more interested to see from this.
- 35:11If there any players that will leave, especially on the
- 35:14offensive line, are there any players that?
- 35:19Because if we look in vain with what he's been running at
- 35:23Cincinnati for those years, it's not that power base game.
- 35:27That's a little bit more spread. It's a little bit little bit
- 35:30different of an offense and what they've been doing it Wisconsin.
- 35:34And if he's give me a tackle in the center, there you go.
- 35:38That's all Brawn. Give it here.
- 35:41They haven't played that much. That's all brown wants because
- 35:43at least you know, body movement, they know and Joe
- 35:47wants. But that's going to be
- 35:49interesting to see what he does though.
- 35:51If he takes that and goes into Wisconsin and decides, we're
- 35:54going to try to run this offense and if it will work because
- 35:58basically Wisconsin's ran the same offense for 30 years since
- 36:01Alvarez was there. More or less.
- 36:04Yeah, in the thing is, you know, fickle zundert, Russell for all
- 36:09those years and under John Cooper would they did a lot of
- 36:12the similar stuff you know back in the 90s and early 2000s.
- 36:17So super interested to see how it goes.
- 36:20Again I'm with you. Eh - on this probably couldn't
- 36:23have got a better at least culture.
- 36:25Fit knows the Big Ten knows recruiting footprint, probably
- 36:29going to be able to up that game a little bit there.
- 36:32All right, Brian this is the one that probably made me the
- 36:34happiest, the squad, the Auburn Tigers War.
- 36:40Damn Eagle decided to come down to Lynchburg and get Hugh freeze
- 36:47out of their God. There we go.
- 36:52What's your grade on this one? A Plus Sigma Plus Hugh freeze
- 36:59has proven both at Ole Miss, where he was getting top-notch
- 37:04players. Maybe my not the most honest of
- 37:08ladies, which doesn't matter as much.
- 37:12Now, it does not matter as much now, but but but still you can't
- 37:17do the things he was doing to get players that's still a leak.
- 37:20Very true, very other. There are other ways above board
- 37:27to lure recruits to Our school now there is but I think what
- 37:31he's done, he could take some of the best talent in the country.
- 37:35Right out of high school, develop them beat Alabama,
- 37:38compete in the SEC. I think, what he's done at
- 37:43Liberty to is he's shown you, how good his coaching chops are
- 37:48taking cast, all taking three stars, taking two stars, and
- 37:51really turning them into a team that can be competitive with
- 37:55just about anybody in the country.
- 37:58And when it comes to a place like Auburn, he's going to
- 38:02probably have top 15 top 12 classes.
- 38:04He's going to have some really good big-time recruit but I
- 38:07think what he's learned at Liberty is I can dip my toe into
- 38:11the transfer portal into the transfer market and I can plug
- 38:15holes somebody asked me today. You think savings shaking in his
- 38:20boots? Like no-shave is not shaking in
- 38:21his boots, but Saban knows it's getting a lot tougher now.
- 38:26Because he knows Hugh freeze somehow.
- 38:29He's got the Kryptonite well the only guys that ever beat saving
- 38:33multiple times Yeah I think so I'm not as high on the grade as
- 38:40you I'm back in the a - range on this one but I say that with a
- 38:46caveat and before I get there, let me go ahead and say this.
- 38:51Like stay, like, stay out of the day.
- 38:53Fun fact, Auburn's last three hires have been former Arkansas,
- 38:59State head coach has, it is now a requirement that if you're
- 39:05going to coach at Auburn, you have to have a stop at Arkansas
- 39:09State, you have to go through the Arkansas state path there,
- 39:13that has to be part of your career path.
- 39:15So, but I like this from the standpoint of He's shown a
- 39:23propensity to be able to recruit in the SEC players that can beat
- 39:31the teams. You have to beat To potentially
- 39:34play for, and or win the conference.
- 39:37Sure. And he's shown the ability to
- 39:41get a lot out of players that Once he gets them in-house,
- 39:46right. So he's taking castoffs he's
- 39:48taken 3 star guys, and develop them into better players than
- 39:54their grade were. He's taken to Star, guys, and
- 39:56done the same thing. They're at Liberty.
- 39:58So, you know, there are things about this that I like a lot
- 40:04obviously, from an Auburn perspective.
- 40:07You're getting baggage with this higher so that's why it's not an
- 40:11A-Plus in my perspective. And because you get Baggage.
- 40:16The hook is going to be there, I think quicker than you'd like to
- 40:20like it to be. So this is on freeze to show his
- 40:25ability in the first two years to at least get one of those
- 40:30Marquee wins. He will or that fan base, is
- 40:33going to get antsy because they have a real easy out to get it.
- 40:37Get him out there. Are you ready?
- 40:39And I'm going to ask you this and you be straight up with me
- 40:41because of that. They did Gus.
- 40:44If they give him two years and they pulled the plug, or they
- 40:47about to become Tennessee, for what we saw for almost 15 years
- 40:51after the. Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 40:53Absolutely. They are about to fall into the
- 40:56Tennessee trap for sure. If this doesn't work out, they
- 41:01will be in the Tennessee trap. And thing is, I think he can
- 41:05coach, but I think it might take it could take four years.
- 41:09It could take four years or may not because he may come in there
- 41:12and say, you're out, you're out, you're out.
- 41:15I'm going to recruit well and that's for four years now, but
- 41:17I'm going to bring a bunch and I think he has that ability.
- 41:20The question is is that if it doesn't happen in two years
- 41:24because because of the baggage, because you hired a coach of
- 41:27baggage, it's going to be a lot easier to talk yourself into
- 41:30getting rid of him. True that.
- 41:33So that's, that's the downside of hiring a coach with that much
- 41:36baggage. And that's that fan base, in
- 41:39general, I'm still underneath, I mean, look at their basketball
- 41:43coach. I'll be.
- 41:44And that's, you know, we're not comparing the two, but the two
- 41:51last one that had broken so far. I don't know if any other before
- 41:56I put the last one on here. Yeah, I'm doing this slide.
- 42:01I don't really care. I mean, sometimes it's just like
- 42:06yeah, screw it. He's confirming.
- 42:14What we are just about to talk about and that is that Georgia
- 42:17Tech is going to retain print Keys as its head coach.
- 42:22Now this wasn't the news as of Sunday as of Sunday the deal.
- 42:26Was it look like Willie Fritz from Tulane was going to get
- 42:31pulled in? That deal sorted died in to me
- 42:36when I saw that. I can't take Georgia Tech
- 42:39seriously because you're going, you know, say it.
- 42:42I mean come on you know a little bit more about Fritz's offense
- 42:44and I do you can kind of see what it is.
- 42:47So the comparison that I made was that if you're going to hire
- 42:52a 62 year old head coach, you need to find more of a Mack
- 42:58Brown type than a guy that runs a niche offense.
- 43:03When you're already trying to break the mold of the guy that
- 43:06you had previously that ran a niche offense, you know, and we
- 43:11can make the arguments that they probably tried to do too much
- 43:15too quick with that offense under Collins, 100%.
- 43:20Absolutely, but I don't think that you need to kind of go.
- 43:26The other direction say that, we're only a school that can run
- 43:29a niche offense. Now I don't think we're at that
- 43:32point with Georgia Tech. But you know, if you did that,
- 43:36if you, if you went the Tulane route, you be even essentially
- 43:40saying, we only have a three to Five-Year Plan and that plan is
- 43:44to remain an itch offense and not be able to recruit offensive
- 43:48talent to this team and let unless you're, unless you can
- 43:54just run the show, the football. Exactly.
- 43:57Um, I mean, Keith did fine for and for he beat us, Well, I take
- 44:04that back. We beat ourselves - just stop.
- 44:08He didn't let his team. Implode equip, exactly, exactly.
- 44:15Then let it steam quit and and and he was able to keep them
- 44:19together for that whole game and was able to make the plays at
- 44:24the end that they need to make after we shot ourselves in the
- 44:27foot, very true. But he's a, he's a, he's a
- 44:30Georgia Tech Alum, he played their back.
- 44:33In the believe it was late 1990s early 2000s when they were a
- 44:38solid program, you know. He, I read here on familes,
- 44:44tweet that he was a team captain there, he coached under saving
- 44:49in Alabama. I just for him, I mean, he'll be
- 44:54given four five, six years, because I don't I don't just see
- 44:58what he's done this yet. I don't think they're ever going
- 44:59to be as bad as they were under Collins week.
- 45:01I'm still trying to figure out What went on where Jeff Collins
- 45:05just fell off a cliff. But at some point you got to
- 45:10actually coach, you can just talk.
- 45:12Yeah. It's just like a it's a c-plus
- 45:15be - higher. It's nothing great.
- 45:17It's just steady want to keep the locker room together of a,
- 45:20you know, team that went for and for I mean the most impressive
- 45:23game to me is what they did Saturday.
- 45:25I had that game up and to say that they hung around with
- 45:30Georgia, almost three quarters. Like, it was still a competitive
- 45:35football game that's impressive because of the talent disparity
- 45:38there. And again, I think for them,
- 45:42it's like, he's a homegrown guy. Let's give him five or six
- 45:45years. Obviously, he's not going to
- 45:47suck as bad as Collins does, and we'll move on.
- 45:51Well, obviously he knows how to put together a game plan and get
- 45:54the players ready to play a lot better than Collins not.
- 45:58All right, so Brian of these remain during openings, He's
- 46:05list them off, one by one. Which one interests you the most
- 46:08of where? Who gets who you still got
- 46:10Colorado, open Stanford's open, USF.
- 46:14FAU Tulsa, Tulsa UAB Maddie, Western Michigan UNLV, which one
- 46:24interests you the most So I've got a 1, a 0, a 1, B.
- 46:30And then I've got an honorable man.
- 46:31No no no no, yeah. All right. 111 is going to be
- 46:37since Daddy just because they are going to be a power 5
- 46:42program, okay. And I think I think they have
- 46:45the ability from where they're located and the competition,
- 46:51they're going to be playing, I think that's gonna going to be a
- 46:54big thing for them. All right.
- 46:56I'm going to give you this one and it's going to shock you.
- 47:00I'm interested to see what happens in Tulsa.
- 47:07Because I'm kind of interested to see if they are.
- 47:10Certain certainly coach, that could be remain nameless.
- 47:14Gets that job. Y'all know?
- 47:16I'm told that I am interested to see if they will hire him to
- 47:19essentially come where he grew up to coach a football team that
- 47:24really had been a solid meal program in the last three or
- 47:26four years had really went downhill, under Philip
- 47:30Montgomery, you know I'm interested for that one.
- 47:34What's your one? Be just because I got a I got to
- 47:37do a 1 b 2 but I want to see what happens with Colorado.
- 47:42Alright alright I think that's an interesting because they've
- 47:46shown that that's a program that's kind of highs lows.
- 47:51Sometimes in the like you can never really know what to expect
- 47:54with them making this. They can get on a they can get
- 47:58on the run with the right combination of recruiting and
- 48:00coaching where they can play with any team in that
- 48:04conference. And then they can also look like
- 48:06absolute dog. It there's just I mean it's all
- 48:08over the place. So I feel like who they bring in
- 48:11is going to, can they bring some consistency is consistently what
- 48:14they want? Or are they found with the boom
- 48:15and bust and looking like a team that could, you know, Challenge
- 48:20Oregon or USC, one year? And then looking like two years
- 48:24later, look like a complete dumpster fire couldn't get out
- 48:28of a paper bag. Wet paper bag.
- 48:30The one I'm interested in my 1, B is Stanford, all that was
- 48:35silent. They do.
- 48:35Those are honorable They should call Mike Elko up right off the
- 48:40bat. Go ahead and call mykel co-op,
- 48:42you know, they're more, maybe trying to get out grow up but
- 48:44ACC already get him out of here. We saw it with, you know, you go
- 48:56through the years with you. Whether it's Spurrier or
- 49:00cutcliffe. If you get to good coach, they
- 49:03may not win 10 games every year, but they're gonna be a goddamn
- 49:06Thorn in your side. Come definitely.
- 49:10All right, one last thing before we head to break here, Brian.
- 49:13I'm really cool to see as announced earlier this week,
- 49:16DeAngelo, Hall, D Hall, you know dvu zone is going into the
- 49:22Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. That's big really great honor
- 49:28for him in, you know. The guy who played close to a
- 49:3413, 14 years in the league, obviously big time player at
- 49:39Tech and now he's getting this onerous photo of him that you
- 49:43know you look through I looked through the day, you know
- 49:45Frank's in there Bruce Smith's in there.
- 49:47Frank Lauria Carol Dale amongst others and probably over the
- 49:51next few years probably going to see a lot of Hokies go in there.
- 49:56Probably starting with D Hall guys you know essentially porn
- 50:00or did things in the Steak. Yeah.
- 50:04Yeah guys that you know, especially during the the big
- 50:07run there in the 2000s, this is kind of the one, you know, the
- 50:11start of that. So you know, we'll see how many
- 50:13more kind of following and D Hall steps here with Abby.
- 50:16This is the big First Step here, so good.
- 50:20Very 4D Hall, very good for him. All right so before we get into
- 50:25just a couple more things to just us tonight, we are going to
- 50:27take a quick pause from our digital partners.
- 50:32You take a quick break, we'd like to tell you about getting
- 50:35your free website report from our digital partner, Grassroots,
- 50:37digital marketing Studio. They'll tell you how your
- 50:39website ranks on Google on-site, SEO and social media.
- 50:43No commitment to buy anything. You can get your free report by
- 50:46visiting. Grassroots digital studio.com
- 50:49forward slash free Dash website Dash report.
- 50:52Now back to the episode. All right, is it Brian?
- 50:55This is a couple more topics to hit on tonight.
- 50:57Let's start. First of all was announced late
- 50:59this afternoon. This was not on our docket and
- 51:01It was announced the all ACC teams which for Virginia Tech of
- 51:07the first second, and third teens, there were none.
- 51:10Unfortunately, there were six honorable mentions.
- 51:17You know, I think, I think me and you kind of agreed probably
- 51:20Dax should have at least got on one.
- 51:24You could argue 13 for Dax for sure you could argue hardcore,
- 51:30but maybe it's just a, snapshot of kind of where this team was
- 51:34talent-wise. And for some folks who maybe did
- 51:37not believe the talent was, there was a disparity there,
- 51:43this usually tells it because you know, Usually you get at
- 51:48least a handful on the team, regardless of your team tracker.
- 51:52Usually give it like a couple third teamers even when you're
- 51:56in the doldrums, right. So you know I think if Garbutt
- 52:01had a played 12 games, he probably is a third teamer as
- 52:05well. So you know you make me ask a
- 52:09question on that one. Obviously, you know we played
- 52:13one fewer game, you know, it's one less day.
- 52:16Appoint to put out their true relative, the competition.
- 52:20So that has to be taken to account and like I said, with
- 52:23garbage sitting out, you know, another to, you know, that
- 52:28that's a pretty big and playing hurt.
- 52:30Honestly, for for half of those that he did play in.
- 52:32So I think Garbutt had when he when he played, when he was
- 52:37healthy and playing it to his potential was definitely at
- 52:40least a third teamer, but, you know, Miss to didn't play one
- 52:45because of the cancellation. And so that hurt him.
- 52:49Yeah, I think of Caleb had a stronger, final two games.
- 52:53You know, he'd be in the compass conversation, probably 413 as
- 52:56well. Yeah, but again none and it's
- 52:59the first time I think since night thing, David teal said
- 53:041990 32 years ago, that there were Tech had none.
- 53:10So, you know, we got a long ways to go, we know that.
- 53:13So it's going to be really interesting how it goes and it
- 53:16Tufflips to our next subject here.
- 53:18And we're going to talk about the portal.
- 53:20And the one thing I know I got a chance to listen to the presser
- 53:24with Brent pry. And basically he mentioned that
- 53:29between a plethora things, they're going to be having
- 53:33conversations with roughly 35 to 35 players about different
- 53:39options, they have and you know, we know there's going to be some
- 53:45draft stuff there. Be about guys, if they should
- 53:48come back into the portal and we kind of already, I think we
- 53:52figured out there was one already taken place before the
- 53:56end of the day Monday and that is DJ Harvey.
- 54:00You know, the four star kid out of California.
- 54:02Cornerback has already put his name in the portal.
- 54:06Yeah, we saw his role diminish to close out the year.
- 54:11Some of that was how well delaying came on, in the back
- 54:15half of the season. I think some of that was, you
- 54:19know, some of the things that Tucker was doing in practice
- 54:22that, you know, looking at that role as best punt returner.
- 54:27So it was just a combination of factors.
- 54:29And, you know, DJ Harvey's, a talented kid.
- 54:31I know he's going to land somewhere and and make a splash,
- 54:34but you look like, just how the, how the things were trending.
- 54:38You know, staying sticking with the Hokies probably wasn't going
- 54:42to be his best opportunity to see the field a lot.
- 54:45Come next year. 100% again sometimes you've got that you're
- 54:49going to see kids that they got to do what's best for them to
- 54:52get on the field and sometimes that writing is on the wall.
- 54:56And it's, you know, and I'm sure you'll have some kids that will
- 55:01say, you know, I'm going to stay.
- 55:02I think I can beat these guys. I know don't don't talk to coach
- 55:06Robbie. Confident about this.
- 55:08It fires him up. Every time a kid enters the
- 55:10portal. But we sit here and it Has her
- 55:17death. It hurts step for the love of
- 55:19solutely ever looked up a little bit, but again, you're talking
- 55:24about a kid that is legitimately across country from family and
- 55:28it's one of those things where how tough is it to say?
- 55:31Well, I'm really going to be fighting to get into the too
- 55:34deep next year. Yeah.
- 55:39It's he's essentially scrapping to keep a spot somewhere in the
- 55:422D, even if you have the attrition of of Chapman, right?
- 55:49So that's kind of the situation he was looking at and then
- 55:54you've got a big class of dbe's coming in as well.
- 55:58This year, they class and you we see we saw Mansoor already.
- 56:03We saw cam Johnson play. Yeah, the other piece is now And
- 56:08maybe this is one of the factors.
- 56:10Dorian strong technically. Got a red shirt this year.
- 56:13Yeah, so Dorian strong will not be out after next year.
- 56:18He has potentially two years of Eligibility.
- 56:20That is that something that shaped the decision as well?
- 56:23There's so many things and you know, you don't want to
- 56:26speculate but you just kind of try to read the tea leaves.
- 56:29You know, any, all these kids are going to be entering the
- 56:31portal and leaving Tech, you know, you tip your hat and you
- 56:34hope the best for them. Absolutely what happens?
- 56:37Yeah. I mean you know when we say one
- 56:39so he always a hokie that's that's truly what it's about.
- 56:44So I mean we wish DJ nothing but the best hopefully lands on his
- 56:47feet somewhere that can can maximize his talents and give
- 56:51him the opportunity to shine. It's 100% And I saw something I
- 56:57lost the Tweet just a few minutes ago, but one of Norfolk
- 57:01State's coaches put out there like essentially, in the lashes
- 57:07hand Full of days, close to 2,000 players and all levels
- 57:13have entered the portal. That's wild to think that many
- 57:19people have entered the portal in just, this short amount of
- 57:24time as the season is wrapping up.
- 57:26And, you know, it's one of those things for live, those kids.
- 57:30I'm hoping that the degree is in hand or the degree will be in
- 57:34Hand by April, because we. So, last year, there are a lot
- 57:38of kids that did not get homes. And when that happens, I mean,
- 57:43you feel for them in a lot of out of ways.
- 57:47But, you know, you've got to make the right decision for you.
- 57:51But, you know, sometimes, you know, hey, you should get in the
- 57:55pool. You can you can play elsewhere
- 57:57and like reality like, you know, you need to work on getting your
- 58:01Collegiate degree. Not necessarily don't think
- 58:05football seriously or put it s. Yeah, but there.
- 58:11You know, you don't want to say, don't chase your dream, but in
- 58:14some ways, you've got to have good counselors.
- 58:17And that's where you hope, he coaches of a team are really
- 58:22thinking about what's the best interest of the player?
- 58:25Not, what's the best interest of the program?
- 58:27Because so many people get screwed.
- 58:29Yeah, I think you see a lot of problems with players trying to
- 58:32make lateral or quasi lateral moves, right?
- 58:36So guys that are like dropping down a division or a level Tend
- 58:42to find a home guys that have shown the ability to jump up a
- 58:45level 10 to find a home. And then guys, kind of at the
- 58:49top end that are jumping in the portal.
- 58:52Usually find a spot on a blue blood or a contender somebody
- 58:55that's kind of in win. Now mode, it says guys that are
- 58:59coming from a mid-tier program and trying to go to another be a
- 59:03program that often kind of slip through the cracks, right?
- 59:08It's very true. It's very, very true.
- 59:13So again it's going to happen more probably.
- 59:17By the time we get back in a few weeks, which we're kind of
- 59:21thinking, we're going to work on.
- 59:22Who's gone? Where do we need to fill other
- 59:26people in the roster to fill, but it's probably gonna be a lot
- 59:29bigger. And maybe we have some, some
- 59:32ends as well as outs during that point in time, but we'll see but
- 59:37it is that season and I'm sure Brian, you probably were like
- 59:41me, you saw some kid, hit the portal and you immediately went
- 59:43up and looked up his success look like, did he play a lot?
- 59:47So it's an offensive. Lineman was it was he recruited
- 59:49previously by our current staff? Yes, and so many ways and I'm
- 59:56sure there's going to be some that signals.
- 59:58And some tea leaves out there is this goes on for the next few
- 1:00:01weeks. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it
- 1:00:04because we kind of get a little bit of a bump on the, on the
- 1:00:08recruiting front from a portal. Spective just as we kind of go
- 1:00:11into, you know, early signing day especially with early
- 1:00:15Signing Day beat later in December.
- 1:00:16That normally is we get a little bit of a, of a rise in the
- 1:00:20portal it, you know, ahead of that this year.
- 1:00:22So, that's going to be nice. 100%.
- 1:00:25Let's go real quick brown. Before we talk about
- 1:00:27championship week and all the games we're going to take a look
- 1:00:30at here and let's talk about The playoff rankings from about
- 1:00:36number 15, all the way up and Brian.
- 1:00:41Let's go through this. And let's just say if we haven't
- 1:00:43already. Okay, yep.
- 1:00:45All right. Number one, Georgia any issue.
- 1:00:49No, I don't hear you. Number two, Michigan, no
- 1:00:52problem. No problem.
- 1:00:54T. See you at 3:00?
- 1:00:56I'm fine with it. I guess you could put the USC
- 1:00:58there and I just I'd be just as fine with it USC.
- 1:01:01For I'm fine with it. I'm more More impressed.
- 1:01:03U.s. see how they one Saturday night with more of a controlled
- 1:01:07offense, which we have not ever seen from Lincoln Riley.
- 1:01:12Usually linked, and Riley wants to score in 90 seconds.
- 1:01:15Every touchdown. They had was three minutes or
- 1:01:18more Saturday, then later name, which was that's impressive.
- 1:01:22It showed that they can play a pace of play, they will need to
- 1:01:25play in the college football playoff.
- 1:01:27Damn, right. All right, there were five of us
- 1:01:30take twenty one point loss in the horseshoe.
- 1:01:33Worst loss in a long time there to Michigan.
- 1:01:35I think 86 any issue, Bill me in five though.
- 1:01:40No. Because of the teams that are
- 1:01:42still behind them, that we're about to talk about her.
- 1:01:44Hey, this is where it gets on for Friday night here.
- 1:01:47Hey Brian. Number six is Alabama.
- 1:01:49Back them up to what number You got to at least put them behind
- 1:01:55wherever the fuck. You have Tennessee.
- 1:01:56Tennessee, 7. So they need to be eight.
- 1:02:01Unless you move it unless you're moving Tennessee up, Penn State
- 1:02:06takes a bump goes up to number eight, that's fine with that.
- 1:02:13I have a little issue with this one though.
- 1:02:15Um, Clemson. Only dropped a 1 after a loss.
- 1:02:19To number nine. I did.
- 1:02:23I don't get that I put them behind K-State.
- 1:02:26I might even put them behind Utah.
- 1:02:29Yeah, there's a couple things they could be behind.
- 1:02:31I don't think you can go as low as we're gonna look at FSU.
- 1:02:36But Dem only dropping one, just kind of just a follow me.
- 1:02:40Kansas State, 10 new issue there be two solid, Kansas team the
- 1:02:46next to where I kind of have an issue.
- 1:02:48So, Utah beat the absolute dog crap out of Colorado.
- 1:02:52Like Everybody has this year and they moved up three spots.
- 1:03:00Washington beat a better Washington State team and Utah's
- 1:03:0511 Washington's. Now 12 Washington moved up one
- 1:03:09spot I don't get that whatsoever.
- 1:03:16I know, Utah's will be playing the championship game.
- 1:03:18I feel like that's the only reason is there, you know?
- 1:03:22Basically, trying to get it, the highest matchup possible.
- 1:03:25All right, last three here, Florida State at 13 LSU at 14.
- 1:03:35And this is really great story. Oregon State at 15.
- 1:03:39What we talked about last week? Brian, that in the future, when
- 1:03:43there are teams were right there, right there.
- 1:03:47Hey listen, beat your rival, your likely in the playoff.
- 1:03:51Yep. That happened at Oregon, State's
- 1:03:55on field, they knock off organ, organs out of the Pac-12
- 1:03:59championship and if this was a 12 team playoff, they're gone,
- 1:04:03they're done. Yep.
- 1:04:05And why those games are going to matter more and I think two lane
- 1:04:09is now 17 to laying on a cusp of getting, it's either going to be
- 1:04:13them for UCF to get a new year 6 volt.
- 1:04:17So they're those rankings and again, again, I just look
- 1:04:22through it. names of 12, every time and You throw two lane in
- 1:04:27there would be two lane Georgia. Michigan, TCU USC and Clemson,
- 1:04:32leaving, Ohio state, Alabama, Tennessee, Penn State, Kansas
- 1:04:35State, and probably Washington, or FS.
- 1:04:38You would sneak in the back door in Twilight.
- 1:04:43Last week's going to be important to buy this week's
- 1:04:44going to be important and let's turn on the big screeners Brian
- 1:04:47and wrap this episode up tonight.
- 1:04:49Ten Championship Games starting Friday night running through
- 1:04:53Saturday Saturday. Could be one of those days where
- 1:04:58if you're going to do something, do it really early after the
- 1:05:02United States, win over Iran today and going to the group of
- 1:05:06what is not group league. Knockout play knockout knockout
- 1:05:09stage for the first time in 28 years, it was in the states and
- 1:05:16they're playing Dutch. On Saturday morning at 9:00.
- 1:05:28Yeah, so that game backed up by a bunch of Championship Games by
- 1:05:33Friday night games. If you have Christmas shopping
- 1:05:37to do, you might want to wait till Sunday.
- 1:05:41Just saying, folks, just saying, well, let's start it here,
- 1:05:45Friday night. The first one is going to the
- 1:05:48conference USA championship to Texas.
- 1:05:50Teen North Texas vs UTSA. The line is eight and a half,
- 1:05:54choose a lie. Line, choose a winner, choose,
- 1:05:56whatever you got from. Will you think on this?
- 1:06:02I'm going to go. I think I'm going to go with UT
- 1:06:10San Antonio here I'm with you too.
- 1:06:13I feel like that program in the last few years it's just they're
- 1:06:17just consistent just being a consistent program they have a
- 1:06:21thing as an old. Texas high school football, head
- 1:06:24coach down there. I'm with you on that one.
- 1:06:30I don't know enough about the spread.
- 1:06:32I ain't there. Been that one.
- 1:06:34Yeah I'm going money line here. Honey, why don't lie?
- 1:06:38All right, Friday night Pack 12 Championship, Utah versus USC.
- 1:06:45USC took a while to find the been line on this one because
- 1:06:49you talked about a few injured players.
- 1:06:51USC only a 3 point favorite in this game and I'm sitting here
- 1:06:58I'll watch that first game beginning to end and it was a
- 1:07:01classic and again the only reason Utah.
- 1:07:05One is add the stones to go for two point conversion late in the
- 1:07:08game. Yep I think this one's going to
- 1:07:11be a little bit different. I think USC's going to win this
- 1:07:15one. I think they're going to not
- 1:07:17Sicily when it handily I think they're going to keep you taught
- 1:07:19at an arm's length somewhere between 7 and 10 points.
- 1:07:22The entire game similar to Notre Dame and you talk is similar to
- 1:07:27Notre Dame. They like to run it.
- 1:07:28They like to play good defense, I'm going to say, USC 34?
- 1:07:36You talk 27, I like you as see to win.
- 1:07:43And cover this one, I think that this USC team Now is better
- 1:07:50equipped to handle this game than they were the last go-round
- 1:07:54between what we saw against Notre, Dame, how they've kind of
- 1:07:57closed out the season. I think it's going to be, I
- 1:08:02think your background, I'm going 3124.
- 1:08:04So I think that it's a full touch down there.
- 1:08:08Alrighty, so that wraps up Friday, night's game.
- 1:08:11There's only two. We should be three, but that is
- 1:08:14what it is. All right, the max in, on
- 1:08:17Saturday afternoon, it's one of the twelve o'clock kicks Toledo
- 1:08:22versus Ohio Toledo, a one and a half Point favorite, who do you
- 1:08:26got on this one? Braun?
- 1:08:29Man, I have not watched enough, my action this year to have a
- 1:08:32great feel about this, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna go with Toledo.
- 1:08:35It's our own fault. Do we do Tuesday night time?
- 1:08:39This while we're talking, it's our own fault, we're sabotaging
- 1:08:43ourselves. We are man, we missed out on the
- 1:08:45Max and every, every, every game and every game, right?
- 1:08:49You said Toledo? Yeah, I'm going to lead.
- 1:08:51Oh, I'm going not so fast. My friend, I will take those
- 1:08:55points. I think Ohio wins this game.
- 1:08:59Ohio, 7 and 1 in conference nine, and three overall, and you
- 1:09:05know, their losses this year or Penn State, Iowa State and Kent
- 1:09:09State, And they're currently own a seven-game winning streak.
- 1:09:17So give me a Ohio to when that one's alright.
- 1:09:22The other big time 12:00 game is the Big 12 and it's going to be
- 1:09:27K State vs TCU TCU Aslam slit them, two and a half Point
- 1:09:34favorite. And, you know, if we take a look
- 1:09:36earlier this year, obviously, the Big 12, Everybody Plays,
- 1:09:41everybody obviously TCU one that meeting earlier in the year and
- 1:09:46tc1 that meeting early in the year.
- 1:09:50Well, the, you know, pretty pretty balanced game.
- 1:09:52They won about 10 points. The game wasn't Fort Worth this
- 1:09:56game is in Dallas. So, you know, a pseudo home
- 1:09:59field advantage there. For TCU.
- 1:10:07The two and a half scares me because Kansas takes that type
- 1:10:12of team that can grind right. And I still worry about TCU
- 1:10:18getting them to grind Fest. But I think from TC what we've
- 1:10:23seen all years, they answer I'll lay the two and a half, I'll
- 1:10:29take TCU to lock up a playoff. Yeah, I think TCU is going to
- 1:10:35lock this up, pretty handily. I don't think it's going to be a
- 1:10:4010-point game, but I think it's going to be a touchdown or more
- 1:10:43game. So, okay, I like TCU in this one
- 1:10:51again, I think the between the de facto home game, the fact
- 1:10:54that they've, I think they got Their best shot from K-State
- 1:10:58last time. I think they take care of
- 1:11:00business and just kind of knowing how that first game went
- 1:11:05is TC was down 11 and a half, it was 2817, they shut out.
- 1:11:11Kansas State in the second half and then proceeded to score. 21
- 1:11:15unanswered, to win that game about 10.
- 1:11:17So kind of one of those weird flummox games, all right?
- 1:11:21And the next one is the Sun Belt.
- 1:11:24Brian, its Coastal it's versus true.
- 1:11:27Troy is a 10-point. Favorite Coastal.
- 1:11:30Got absolutely shellacked up in Harrisonburg last weekend.
- 1:11:33Yes, they did. I don't know the whole story
- 1:11:39where they playing everybody, the game did not matter, JM you
- 1:11:44could not win anything from them and Troy's had a hell of a
- 1:11:50season. Troy's had a hell of a season in
- 1:11:53the sun belt, Troy's 10 and 2. Ten and two, the only losses Ole
- 1:12:02Miss and app state that was appstate early in the season 9
- 1:12:09of a trucking. Yeah, when they were old truck,
- 1:12:12do you got man Troy always sneaks up on people.
- 1:12:18That's I feel like that, that's what happens.
- 1:12:22I'm going to take Troy, I'm going to take Troy and the
- 1:12:26points, okay? Um, I feel like Tim's just too
- 1:12:35big too late Coastal ale to Coast.
- 1:12:37So I know this game is I believe it is down in Troy and you know,
- 1:12:44it's just one of those that shellacking doesn't Write to me,
- 1:12:48Coastal doesn't play like that you know, coastal's one of those
- 1:12:51teams that can hang with just about anybody in the country and
- 1:12:54to tell me they got just absolutely pounded.
- 1:12:57I don't get it. Maybe she's just playing the
- 1:12:59state of Virginia team because they got pounded two times this
- 1:13:02year both by the state of Virginia I think Troy wins.
- 1:13:05I think it's closer. I think it's close enough to
- 1:13:08where I'll take ten and Coastal Carolina.
- 1:13:11All right, Mountain West Conference.
- 1:13:14Fresno State vs Boise. I have not watched any Mountain
- 1:13:20West this year. I'm going to be just very
- 1:13:22honest, no Mountain, West whatsoever.
- 1:13:26So I'm just going to throw a shot in the dark and say Boise
- 1:13:31later points. When in doubt, pick Boise, that
- 1:13:39that's a good philosophy. I'm going to take it here.
- 1:13:41We're both taking Boise. All right, let's get to these
- 1:13:45afternoon games, the AAC. UCF versus two lane to Lane a
- 1:13:49three-point favorite. What you think on this one?
- 1:13:53Brian Gus Malzahn versus Willie Fritz.
- 1:13:56I think it's going to be down in the sugar.
- 1:13:58Don't, when the Sugar Dome in the Superdome we got so, if
- 1:14:06Fritz would have been at Georgia Tech out of absolutely taking
- 1:14:09UCF here but since that Chatters off the table, I'm going to ride
- 1:14:14the Tulane wave. He's keeps riding the wavy, he's
- 1:14:18riding that wave, and I'm riding with you this time.
- 1:14:21So it's either going to go down in flames or riding it together.
- 1:14:26Tulane lay the points. I think it's going to be a good
- 1:14:29game though. I think those two offenses, make
- 1:14:32it interesting and maybe two lanes playing in the Sugar Bowl
- 1:14:36in their home stadium, and just a few short weeks here, all
- 1:14:41right Ron SEC Championship LSU versus Georgia.
- 1:14:47Georgia. All but locked in, regardless,
- 1:14:49what happens in this game? That they are a 17 and a half
- 1:14:54Point favorite LSU, just got who traced down at the, you know,
- 1:15:01the 100 million dollars, man, house with Jimbo.
- 1:15:07What do you think on this one? You know what, I like Georgia to
- 1:15:14win this one. It's at 17 and a half is given
- 1:15:18me pause. I think it's a little too rich
- 1:15:21for my blood, so if it was money line, I'm taking Georgia but
- 1:15:27I'll take LSU against the spread.
- 1:15:31All right. This is a tough one because that
- 1:15:40is a lot of lot of points. A lot of points to just lay.
- 1:15:46And we've seen that lets you keep up, but also, I didn't get
- 1:15:52to watch that game. I couldn't tell you how it took
- 1:15:54place, but I remember walking back into the man cave on
- 1:15:58Saturday night and looking over at the A&M LSU game in wondering
- 1:16:03how the hell are they losing them by 17?
- 1:16:06If you told me that was a 3 years, Seven-point game, I get
- 1:16:09it. Jimbo got his guys up.
- 1:16:10The crowd went crazy, it affected LSU, they were looking
- 1:16:13forward but I don't, I'm gonna actually take Georgia and lay
- 1:16:20the points. I think they lay a freaking ass
- 1:16:22whipping on LSU. Okay, maybe don't like 4221, I
- 1:16:29really do. All right, two more games here
- 1:16:32Brown. The next is Big Ten, the Big Ten
- 1:16:35wheel of Destiny, the West, which seriously I think the Big
- 1:16:41Ten West may have been worse than the coastal this year, in
- 1:16:45all seriousness. There wasn't a good team out
- 1:16:48there and that's Purdue takes on Michigan at 16 and a half.
- 1:16:52Michigan coming off the blowout win.
- 1:16:55I mean produce, always got a good offense but the way
- 1:16:57Michigan's lines are playing right now.
- 1:17:00Give me Michigan. If this thing was 20 at Lake 20,
- 1:17:04give me Michigan. The line is 16 and a half.
- 1:17:09Yeah, I'm taking Michigan all the way here.
- 1:17:11I don't think this one's really close.
- 1:17:14Michigan is hit a different level than I thought they could
- 1:17:16reach this year and we'll see if they can continue writing that
- 1:17:21going forward, but I don't think there's any reason.
- 1:17:25Reason to bet against them right now, after what we saw the new
- 1:17:27to Ohio State, not at all. All right.
- 1:17:30Last one here obviously, the ACC Championship where UNC takes on.
- 1:17:34Clemson. Clemson is a seven and a half
- 1:17:37Point favorite. Brian, what are you thinking on
- 1:17:39this one? You know what?
- 1:17:45Both of these teams kind of limping across the Finish Line.
- 1:17:49It's really a weird, weird point to be in because I have no faith
- 1:17:54in either of these teams to do what I think they're capable of
- 1:17:59true. But Clemson has the better
- 1:18:00defense. I'm taking Clemson.
- 1:18:03All right, you're right. Clemson does have the better
- 1:18:05defense, but it gave up some points last week and the offense
- 1:18:10looked discombobulated in. I do not Think they can turn
- 1:18:15that in a week and I don't think Davos going to come off DJ
- 1:18:19maybe, if he had the nerve and go with the Freshman, I don't
- 1:18:24know who wins the game, but the way these teams are both
- 1:18:27playing, I don't think anybody's blowing out anybody.
- 1:18:30And in that case, I'll take Carolina, give me the points.
- 1:18:33I don't know who's going to win the game, but I'll take Carolina
- 1:18:37fair. All right, Brian anything break
- 1:18:40in the last few minutes here. Nothing that I think we should
- 1:18:45really talk about. I think we're clear, man.
- 1:18:48I think we're clear. What in the hell?
- 1:18:54Well, while I'm looking at that, that is going to wrap up this
