Hospitals are drowning in unpaid bills—nearly €60 million from patients who left without settling charges, plus over €138 million owed by private insurers for public hospital procedures. Despite spending half a million euros on debt collectors in 2024 alone, hospitals wrote off more than €16 million in unpaid fees over two years. A big chunk of the patient debt stems from fees abolished in April 2023, emergency room walkouts, and complex road accident claims.
