- 0:41level. So you're playing at your full potential, rather than at a
- 0:45fraction as most people do. We'll share the one thing that
- 0:49once we learned it, our lives were transformed. And once you
- 0:53learn it, watch what happens. Welcome to think Be it the
- 0:59podcast. I'm Kelly Hatfield.
- 1:02John Mitchell: And I'm John Michell. So today, we've got a
- 1:06topic that I think you guys will find interesting. You know, life
- 1:10is all about growing, and, and evolving intellectually. And so
- 1:17my, the topic today is really, do you have a system for
- 1:23growing? And do you have a system for reviewing what you've
- 1:27learned in the past. And with that, as the subject I'll share
- 1:34with you, sort of my system, and Kelly, then utilise yours, but
- 1:40you know, so I have a system where I pick basically three,
- 1:47three podcasts that I follow, you know, that are relative to
- 1:53entrepreneurs and, and to sports coaches. And so I have three
- 1:58different podcasts that I follow. And every Monday, I look
- 2:04and see what episodes what new episodes are there. And I pick
- 2:09two specific episodes out of those three different podcasts.
- 2:13And I listen to the episodes during the week. But, and that's
- 2:19how it evolves every week for me. And I, I send myself an
- 2:24email, those episodes that I'm going to listen to on Monday, so
- 2:29that I really start listing, Monday at lunch, and then
- 2:33through the end of the week. But the other thing I am big on is,
- 2:38is recording what I'm learning. And I have a place that when I
- 2:43like read a book, I'll take notes, and then I'll record the
- 2:47notes in this particular file that I have. And so I'm tracking
- 2:54what I'm learning. And, and lately, I've been tracking what
- 2:58I've been learning every week by looking at what I'm writing in
- 3:03my thinking tablet, which is this technique of thinking two
- 3:07times a week. But that's how I do it. And so Kelly, tell us how
- 3:12you do it. And then I want to talk a little deeper about why,
- 3:15you know, reviewing what you're learning is important. So how do
- 3:19you how do you do it.
- 3:20Kelly Hatfield: So I've got part of what I do each week. So I
- 3:25have a review that I do each week, and it's part of my
- 3:28planning session for the following week. So um, whatever
- 3:32I listened to, as far as the you know, whether it's a podcast, or
- 3:36whether it was a specific training that I did, or, you
- 3:39know, we've got a monthly learning team learning growth
- 3:43session that we do. And so it could be the download from that.
- 3:47But basically, I'll use voice notes while I'm listening to it.
- 3:50Because a lot of the time I'm doing something like getting
- 3:52ready in the morning, or I'm on the treadmill. So something
- 3:54really like jumps out at me. I'm like, Okay, I need to, I need to
- 3:58be thinking about that more deeply. I'm using I'm putting it
- 4:01into my thinking session, you know, it might even be an
- 4:04episode that I will go back. And because I'll timestamp it like,
- 4:08Okay, I need to come back to 10 minutes and 30 seconds, because
- 4:11everything from there for the next five minutes was like
- 4:14really the essence of what I want to be thinking more deeply
- 4:17about. Right? And so I go through that process during the
- 4:21week and then on Sunday, I'm looking at okay, when I did my
- 4:25thinking session, were there any like what action items were
- 4:29there? You know, what were my takeaways do any of those need
- 4:32to go on to my calendar for the next week, as far as planning is
- 4:36concerned? Or so I'm looking at it. I haven't been looking at it
- 4:40specifically in terms of what did I learn? It's more so okay,
- 4:46like what were my key takeaways? And then if there were any
- 4:49action items as a result of this thinking sessions, am I moving
- 4:53this project forward or what I learned forward? Or how do I
- 4:58move it forward by getting it on Mike? calendar and making the
- 5:00space for the following week. So that's kind of my process.
- 5:04John Mitchell: Right? You know, I think probably when people
- 5:07hear how we do it, they're like, whoa, that's, that's way too
- 5:12complicated for me. And but it doesn't have to be, you know,
- 5:16you're listening to two people that are serious growers, you
- 5:20know, but you do have to have a simple system, quote, unquote,
- 5:25system to grow. Such as, you know, setting up what you're
- 5:30gonna grow, what you're gonna listen to, at the start of the
- 5:34week, and then listen to it. By the way, that's pretty simple.
- 5:37And that's powerful. But one of the things I've sort of see,
- 5:43though, is that once you learn something, oftentimes you'll
- 5:48forget it unless you go back, and, and read it again. And so
- 5:53that's the next iteration to growing is, is capturing those
- 5:58really powerful things you're learning and review them. And,
- 6:03and it sticks in my head, this idea that, that it's better to
- 6:08read one great book 10 times than 10, good books. And, and
- 6:14I'm big believer in that. And so along that lines, you have to,
- 6:20you have to record those things that you're learning so that,
- 6:24you know, like I do it once a quarter, the first week of the
- 6:27new quarter, I'm gonna go back and review all the notes I had
- 6:32for the past quarter, and probably for the past year. And,
- 6:37and it's pretty powerful. And I was and as we launched into this
- 6:41whole idea I was this week looking at what I learned last
- 6:47quarter, and I think the most powerful thing I learned was
- 6:50what we had a podcast episode on this a while back, where you
- 6:55have to tune in to reality. Because reality is the the most
- 7:01efficient way things work. And so if you, you know, don't tuned
- 7:07in or reality, let's, let's say you're in a business, and you're
- 7:12sort of going along, but you're oblivious to are we getting more
- 7:17sales are? Are more and more leads coming in? Or is the
- 7:23opposite having happening, fewer leads are coming in, you know,
- 7:27you've got to tune in to reality, and see, what is it
- 7:32telling you, you may not like it. But the sooner you tune in
- 7:36to reality, and adjust your behavior so that the results
- 7:41that reality is giving you are more favorable, you're always
- 7:45going to struggle, and I never, I never really got this as deep
- 7:51as I do today. What do you think was this past? Say, since the
- 7:57start of the year? What do you think, is the biggest lesson
- 8:01you've gotten?
- 8:03Kelly Hatfield: I would think and listen, I know, I knew this,
- 8:07you know, but common sense isn't always common practice. Right?
- 8:12So, um, you know, one of the key things for me, is really, I've
- 8:19been able to exponentially change and I've got a great
- 8:23mindset. But you know, honestly, um, you know, with everything
- 8:27that's been going on in the world, and with, you know, just
- 8:30all of this uncertainty, and, you know, we know that our, we
- 8:35naturally are fearful, you know, our brains are geared for that.
- 8:43And so, for me, it was, I got rid of every news, social media,
- 8:52app, anything on my phone, I limit my intake of the news,
- 8:59because I want to stay informed, doesn't need to be on in the
- 9:02office, it doesn't need to be on in the background, filling my
- 9:06brain with anxiety and everything, even though maybe
- 9:09I'm not really listening to it, your brain is yeah, there. You
- 9:12know. So I think turning that off, being very intentional
- 9:16about how I consume those things, and at what time of day,
- 9:21and like really dialing that in, because the life, the role of an
- 9:27entrepreneur, of a business owner of it, like it's all a bit
- 9:31what's happening in your mind, in your mindset. And so really
- 9:35protecting that protecting what you're allowing the input that
- 9:41you're allowing into your life and into your, you know, your
- 9:46brain. And so, and I again, I knew these things, but you just
- 9:50fall into some old patterns. And, you know, so back into my
- 9:55visualization it went so that I could correct some of that
- 9:59behavior that was just fine on autopilot. And it made a huge
- 10:04difference.
- 10:05John Mitchell: Yeah, that's, that's great. I completely agree
- 10:08with you. I mean, it goes back to what we were talking about a
- 10:11while ago, you know, life is a state of mind. Yep. And so how
- 10:14are you controlling your state of mind? Yep. You know, the
- 10:18other thing that I noticed that was a big one for me last
- 10:22quarter was that just the pure power of doing what you say
- 10:26you're going to do, and how, as you and I have learned, and
- 10:30coaching people, you know, everybody says they do what they
- 10:33say they're going to do. And then when they when you really
- 10:37sort of dig a little deeper, oftentimes, you see that they're
- 10:40doing it, maybe 40% of the time. And, and this is such an aha
- 10:46moment with people. And it's sort of a good or a bad thing,
- 10:51you know, they discover that they're not doing it, and they
- 10:54feel bad about it. But then, you know, you teach them how that if
- 10:59now you're conscious of doing what you say you're going to do,
- 11:02it'll make them way more conscious about what they say
- 11:04they will, they will do, and then they'll actually do it.
- 11:08And, and, of course, it's easy to articulate this in our life
- 11:14GPS template, and that, you know, I do what I say, I'm going
- 11:18to do both with myself and other people. But I see that when
- 11:22people really embrace this, they typically get twice as much done
- 11:27from just that mindset shift. Right?
- 11:30Kelly Hatfield: Absolutely. Well, you know, we talk about
- 11:34how precious life is, you know, and, you know, so when you're
- 11:39very intentional, you know, about and having a sense of
- 11:42urgency about life, about what you say yes to, and this goes
- 11:47back to what you were just talking about the things that
- 11:49you commit to doing and following through and doing them
- 11:52the thing, you know, you begin to filter everything through
- 11:56that, like, Hey, listen, is this aligned with you? No, no, can I
- 11:59really get this done in the time limit? No. So So you start
- 12:05editing, the things you're saying yes to, and then watch
- 12:10what happens as far as momentum, if you're really have a lot of
- 12:14clarity around what your goals are, what you want, you know,
- 12:17what you want to achieve, how you want to show up, you know,
- 12:20and then you start planning and acting in alignment with that,
- 12:25and then keeping your word to yourself, the momentum, you
- 12:29know, it just happens so quickly, and you get so much
- 12:32more done. Because you're not doing all that fluffy stuff that
- 12:35you shouldn't have said yes to to begin with. And then you're
- 12:37not diluting any of your energy by being stressed about the fact
- 12:43you've committed to something that you really aren't going to
- 12:46do, you know, or you haven't done and you've let somebody
- 12:49down, and there's this whole cascade that happens that just
- 12:52shifts your energy and slows everything down. And so when you
- 12:55do this, the way you just get on with that keeping your word to
- 12:58yourself, oh my gosh, right. It's just everything.
- 13:03John Mitchell: Right? You know, using our technique, one of the
- 13:06things I noticed is, is, of course, I feel big time guilt.
- 13:10If I don't do something I say I'm gonna do, which is great.
- 13:14You know that guilt is a powerful thing. And so I'm glad
- 13:18it's there. But if if I actually see that I didn't do something I
- 13:23said, I'm going to do, I'm going to by God do it the next time.
- 13:27And if I see that I it doesn't happen again. I'm going to
- 13:30change the wording in my visualization in terms of what
- 13:34I'm how I'm saying it, because evidently, my subconscious mind
- 13:38doesn't like how I'm saying it or doesn't appreciate the
- 13:41importance of whatever it is.
- 13:44Kelly Hatfield: It's John, it's so interesting that you say that
- 13:46because in my life, GPS or visualization, I change the
- 13:51wording to be I'm deliberate. And intentional about what I say
- 13:58yes. And what I say no to. Yeah. So like, now I've trained myself
- 14:03that in the moment, I rarely will give somebody an answer. I
- 14:07slow down because my, my autopilot that 95% subconscious
- 14:13happens subconsciously would be to just right in the moment.
- 14:16Right? Well, that gets me nowhere. So by saving that
- 14:21space, then I'm able to slow down and say, okay, here are my
- 14:23goals. Here's really let me get a realistic picture. Is this
- 14:27aligned? Does this make sense for me to, to commit to this?
- 14:30And then I can circle back with the person and say no,
- 14:33graciously, you know, I agree to do it. But I'm deliberate and
- 14:39intentional. And by using those specific words, those words work
- 14:43for me. You know, so I love that just again, those little nuances
- 14:47where you can shift something and it makes all the difference
- 14:50in the world.
- 14:51John Mitchell: Right. You know, one final thing that that that
- 14:55that's interesting that I observed about life is how
- 15:00beneficial, the wisdom of other people can be relative to your
- 15:05life. And I was thinking I was watching this new show on on
- 15:12Apple TV about Boris Becker remember, Boris Becker, the
- 15:17tennis player, you know, he ended up, you know, when he won
- 15:21Wimbledon a couple of times, and he, but he ended up going to
- 15:24jail for tax fraud. And, and it's an interesting story. But I
- 15:30remember and I don't know if I've ever told you this. But,
- 15:34you know, my claim to fame in high school was, I won the
- 15:40district's singles title in tennis, three years in a row,
- 15:43which nobody, nobody had had, of course, this is for Texas,
- 15:48Catholic high schools, which you know, means, you know, probably
- 15:52any public school school kid could beat me, but, you know, I
- 15:56wanted three years in a row the district and was second in the
- 15:59state. And, and, you know, I never really took tennis at all
- 16:04that serious, I was naturally good at it. Because when I was
- 16:08in seventh and eighth grade, a friend of mine, and I just
- 16:12played all the time, and we were just, we just got good. And my
- 16:17main sport was football. But I'm watching this Boris Becker
- 16:20thing. And I'm like, Boy, I tell you, you know, I would have
- 16:25loved or somebody in my life to come to me and say, Now, John,
- 16:30how it first of all, how important is tennis to you. Let
- 16:35me point out something to you, you're going to be as good as
- 16:38you make yourself good is not going to be how talented you
- 16:42are. It's how hard you work to be good at tennis. That's what's
- 16:48gonna determine it. And I know if if I heard that I would like,
- 16:52well, I thought, I just thought some people more gifted. Know
- 16:56that, that is generally not the case. It's who's working the
- 16:59hardest. And, and, you know, I also would have probably told
- 17:05myself, that, look who your coach is, he's the algebra
- 17:10teacher. And he's Tom, really, you're not really a, you know,
- 17:14tennis coach, if you're serious about this, get a real coach.
- 17:17And, and I see how transformative sort of those two
- 17:22little piece of his pieces of advice would have been. And I
- 17:26would have been a much better tennis player than I was, but
- 17:30also see how that plays out in people's lives. Like what you
- 17:34and I teach people. And we've, we've seen it, you know, once
- 17:38they get it, it's like, Whoa, it's a whole new perspective, a
- 17:43whole new level of, of happiness and success from doing this
- 17:48thing that somebody teaches them to do, that they had to learn
- 17:52from the top book in the world on success. But you know, the
- 17:55point of it, is that the wisdom of other people can change your
- 18:00life. So,
- 18:01Kelly Hatfield: absolutely, no, I think it's so important.
- 18:04There's no and there's no need to reinvent the wheel. And the
- 18:07cool thing is, is that we live in a time now, where you got
- 18:11access to like, anything you want to learn. And, like, you
- 18:15can get advice from the people at the top of their game, you
- 18:19know, by Googling, you know, and doing some search searches and
- 18:23starting to get that input of, you know, mentorships and
- 18:27mentorship from afar and again, the wisdom of others. So no, I
- 18:30love this, John, it's such a great, it's so important to, you
- 18:34know, understand that.
- 18:36John Mitchell: And I'll also say chat GPT is going to change the
- 18:40world. I say that with 100% confidence. I just had been
- 18:46learning about chat GPT through Darren Hardy, and I'm giving it
- 18:50to the 17 head coaches at the University of Texas. And
- 18:55justice, just what you said, you know, you can Google it. Well,
- 19:00the next evolution of googling it is using chat GPT to learn
- 19:04things. So buckle up, because it's, it's coming on strong.
- 19:09With that said, we'll see you next time.
- 19:15Kelly Hatfield: Thanks for listening today. If you've had
- 19:17your own aha moment from today's episode, send me or John an
- 19:21email. We'd love to share your epiphany with our audience. So
- 19:26email us at Kelly@thinkitbeit.com or
- 19:30John@thinkitbeit.com. In the meantime, live the exceptional
- 19:34life
