- Lucas: Alright, we're back for another episode of Learn Telugu with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 85! Can you believe it? Lucas: I know, it's flown by. Last time we were at the cinema buying tickets. Luna: Right, 'రెండు టికెట్లు' – two tickets. That was fun. Lucas: Today we're going somewhere just as practical – the pharmacy. Imagine you're traveling and you need medicine. Luna: Oh, that's a good one. I'd definitely need to know how to ask for medicine. Lucas: Exactly. First phrase: 'నాకు మందు కావాలి' – I need medicine. Luna: నాకు మందు కావాలి. Nāku mandu kāvāli. Lucas: Good. 'నాకు' means 'to me' or 'I need', 'మందు' is medicine, 'కావాలి' is 'want/need'. Say it once more. Luna: నాకు మందు కావాలి. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you want medicine for a fever, you can say: 'జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా?' – Do you have medicine for fever? Luna: జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా? Jvarāniki mandu undā? Lucas: Yeah. 'జ్వరం' is fever, '-కి' means 'for', 'ఉందా?' means 'is there?' So literally 'For fever medicine is there?' Luna: That makes sense. So if I have a cold I'd say 'జలుబుకి మందు ఉందా?' Lucas: Exactly! 'జలుబు' is cold. You're using the pattern already. But today we'll stick with fever. So 'జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా?' Luna: జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా? Lucas: Now, let's say the pharmacist gives you medicine and tells you how to take it. 'రోజుకు రెండు సార్లు తీసుకోండి' – Take it twice a day. Luna: రోజుకు రెండు సార్లు తీసుకోండి. Rōjuku reṇḍu sārlū tīsukōṇḍi. Lucas: That's it. 'రోజుకు' means 'per day', 'రెండు సార్లు' is 'two times', 'తీసుకోండి' is 'take'. Luna: So if it's three times a day, I'd say 'రోజుకు మూడు సార్లు తీసుకోండి'? Lucas: Exactly! You're a natural. Now, after you get the medicine, you'll want to ask the price: 'ఎంత అయ్యింది?' – How much does it cost? Luna: ఎంత అయ్యింది? Enta ayindi? Lucas: Right. 'ఎంత' is 'how much', 'అయ్యింది' means 'became' or 'is'. So 'How much is it?' Finally, don't forget 'ధన్యవాదాలు' – Thank you. Luna: ధన్యవాదాలు. Dhanyavādālu. That one I remember from before. Lucas: Good. So let's put it all together: You walk into a pharmacy and say 'నాకు మందు కావాలి. జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా?' The pharmacist gives you something and says 'రోజుకు రెండు సార్లు తీసుకోండి'. You say 'ఎంత అయ్యింది?' and then 'ధన్యవాదాలు'. Luna: That's a whole conversation! Let me try: నాకు మందు కావాలి. జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా? Lucas: Perfect. You sound like you really need it. Luna: Oof, I might someday. Hey, you know what, speaking of needing things – you know what keeps these episodes going? Lucas: What's that? Luna: People like you, listening. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Telugu, a couple of dollars a month at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo genuinely makes a difference. Keeps us ad-free and going. Lucas: Yeah, it really does. Every little bit helps. And we love doing this. Luna: Okay, back to the pharmacy. So after I pay, I get the medicine. But what if the pharmacist asks 'ఇంకేమైనా కావాలా?' – 'Do you need anything else?' Lucas: Oh, good question. You could say 'అవును, నాకు నీళ్ళు కావాలి' – Yes, I need water. Or 'వద్దు, ధన్యవాదాలు' – No, thank you. Luna: 'వద్దు' is no, right? I remember that one. Lucas: Yes. 'వద్దు, ధన్యవాదాలు' – No, thank you. So now you have a full pharmacy visit. Luna: Let's practice one more time. I'll be the customer: నాకు మందు కావాలి. జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా? Lucas: And I'll be the pharmacist: అవును, ఉంది. ఇది తీసుకోండి. రోజుకు రెండు సార్లు. Luna: ఎంత అయ్యింది? Lucas: రెండు వందల రూపాయలు. Luna: ధన్యవాదాలు. Lucas: Excellent. You just had a full conversation. Let's review the phrases one more time: 'నాకు మందు కావాలి', 'జ్వరానికి మందు ఉందా?', 'రోజుకు రెండు సార్లు తీసుకోండి', 'ఎంత అయ్యింది?', 'ధన్యవాదాలు'. Luna: That's a lot but it feels manageable. I'll practice these. Lucas: Good. Keep repeating them. Next time you're at a pharmacy in Telugu-speaking areas, you'll be ready. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to all of you for learning with us. We'll see you next time! Lucas: Yeah, practice these phrases and we'll be back with more. Until then, happy learning!
