- 0:01Speaker 1: Gospel Reflection 4, the 29th day of October in the
- 0:05Speaker 1: year of our Lord, 2026. Today's reading comes from Ephesians,
- 0:10Speaker 1: chapter 6, 10 through 20. And St. Paul wrote, Finally, brethren,
- 0:17Speaker 1: be strengthened in the Lord and in the might of
- 0:19Speaker 1: his power. Put you all in the armor of God
- 0:24Speaker 1: that you may be able to stand against the deceits
- 0:26Speaker 1: of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh
- 0:30Speaker 1: and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the rulers
- 0:34Speaker 1: of this world in darkness, against the spirits of wickedness
- 0:38Speaker 1: in high places. Therefore take unto you the armor of
- 0:41Speaker 1: God that you may be able to resist the evil
- 0:44Speaker 1: day and to stand in all things perfect. Stand therefore
- 0:49Speaker 1: having your loins girt about with truth and having on
- 0:53Speaker 1: the breastplate of justice the and your feet shod with
- 0:56Speaker 1: the preparation of the gospel of peace. In all things,
- 1:00Speaker 1: taking the shield of faith, wherewith you may be able
- 1:03Speaker 1: to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and take unto you the helmet of salvation and the
- 1:09Speaker 1: sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
- 1:13Speaker 1: By all prayer and supplication, praying in all times of
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Spirit, and in the same watching with all instance
- 1:18Speaker 1: and supplication for all the saints, and for me, That
- 1:23Speaker 1: speech may be given to me, that I may open
- 1:25Speaker 1: my mouth with confidence to make known the mystery of
- 1:27Speaker 1: the gospel, for which I am ambassador in a chain,
- 1:32Speaker 1: that therein I may be bold to speak according as
- 1:37Speaker 1: I ought. The Dewey Reams notes, in high places or
- 1:41Speaker 1: heavenly places, that is to say in the air, the
- 1:45Speaker 1: lowest of the celestial regions, in which God permits these
- 1:48Speaker 1: wicked spirits of fallen angels to wander. And you may
- 1:53Speaker 1: be surprised, that's a rather controversial statement these days. As
- 1:58Speaker 1: an author, I often get negative feedback over my Catholic books.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Not surprising, I know. But one of my first books
- 2:08Speaker 1: that I wrote, I mean, literally the second book I wrote,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I guess, was The Christian History of Herbal Medicine. And
- 2:15Speaker 1: it's not an overtly Catholic book. But it's hated by
- 2:19Speaker 1: both pagans and Protestants alike because it shows the Catholic
- 2:22Speaker 1: history of the practice of medicine and that all Catholics,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I mean that all Christians were Catholic until relatively recent times. Sometimes, though,
- 2:32Speaker 1: people take issue with the strangest things. When writing of
- 2:35Speaker 1: the spiritual nature of St. Hilgard von Bingen's herbal medicine,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I quoted from today's first reading, for our wrestling is
- 2:43Speaker 1: not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities and
- 2:46Speaker 1: powers of against the rulers of the world and its darkness,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and the spirits of wickedness in the high places. And
- 2:57Speaker 1: a reader on Amazon left a very angry review, saying
- 3:02Speaker 1: that my book wasn't Christian but pagan, because Christians acknowledge
- 3:06Speaker 1: only one power, and that is Jesus. How very odd.
- 3:13Speaker 1: How can anyone who reads the Bible not understand the
- 3:15Speaker 1: reality of angels and demons? How can they not know
- 3:19Speaker 1: that we are a spiritual battle? The Protestant motto is
- 3:25Speaker 1: sola fide and sola scriptura, faith alone and the Bible alone. Well,
- 3:30Speaker 1: how can you say your only authority is the Bible
- 3:33Speaker 1: and deny the fact that the Bible talks about demons,
- 3:37Speaker 1: evil spirits looking to ruin the souls of people? I
- 3:43Speaker 1: don't know. But... Such comments are far more frequent than
- 3:48Speaker 1: you would imagine. Often, Protestants take issue with praying to
- 3:52Speaker 1: saints because they say that the Bible forbids communicating with
- 3:55Speaker 1: the dead. Obviously, I first quote that our Lord said
- 3:58Speaker 1: the saints were alive because God is the God of
- 4:01Speaker 1: the living, but then I bring up that Jesus met
- 4:04Speaker 1: with the spirits of Moses and Elijah in the Transfiguration.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Many of these so-called Bible-believing Christians flatly deny this happened.
- 4:15Speaker 1: They say such things as, no one can talk with spirits.
- 4:17Speaker 1: My preacher says this is superstition, like believing in ghosts,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and it's evil. Of course, I explained that Jesus, being God,
- 4:24Speaker 1: was incapable of evil, and that to call anything he
- 4:28Speaker 1: did a sin is to deny his divinity, and then
- 4:31Speaker 1: they get really angry. I also mentioned that the Bible
- 4:34Speaker 1: differentiates between communicating with saints, as Jesus did, and seeking
- 4:39Speaker 1: to divine the future through divination via the spirits of
- 4:42Speaker 1: the dead, as did Saul when he consulted with a
- 4:45Speaker 1: witch or a medium who conjured the spirit of Samuel. Usually, though,
- 4:50Speaker 1: they'll deny that passage as well, saying their preacher said
- 4:53Speaker 1: it's all just superstition. So on the one hand, they'll
- 4:56Speaker 1: say the Bible says you can't communicate with the dead,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and on the other hand, they'll flatly deny the Bible
- 5:01Speaker 1: even has the story of Saul consulting with a medium.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And then you bring up the transfiguration and just mind blown,
- 5:09Speaker 1: they start cussing at you, which is always very nice
- 5:12Speaker 1: for a Christian to do, isn't it? So you'll honestly
- 5:15Speaker 1: have to wonder how much of the Bible Protestants actually
- 5:19Speaker 1: read and understand. And I mean that in the most
- 5:22Speaker 1: charitable way. You've got to remember, I grew up pretty
- 5:28Speaker 1: much non-denominational, but we started going to a Presbyterian church
- 5:32Speaker 1: when I was, I don't know, six, seven years old.
- 5:34Speaker 1: My mom had been to a Presbyterian college And we
- 5:38Speaker 1: left that church because the church was basically teaching atheism.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I mean, they were literally teaching evolution and the Big
- 5:47Speaker 1: Bang Theory. And this was the 80s, so they weren't,
- 5:52Speaker 1: I mean, they were getting really liberal. They were getting
- 5:54Speaker 1: very pro-gay. They were saying things, you know, really very
- 6:00Speaker 1: controversial things. And we ended up leaving that church and
- 6:04Speaker 1: went to the Methodist Church. I was confirmed Methodist, which
- 6:07Speaker 1: means absolutely nothing. Basically, at the age of 10 years old,
- 6:11Speaker 1: I spent about four weekends, or no, it was four
- 6:14Speaker 1: Wednesdays out of the week, being taught the basics of Methodism.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And when I would ask a question like, what's the method?
- 6:22Speaker 1: They would say, we don't know. I mean, I was
- 6:26Speaker 1: asking questions. I really wanted to know stuff. But somehow
- 6:29Speaker 1: I was confirmed Methodist, and no. No. In college, I
- 6:33Speaker 1: ended up being a Methodist youth minister. And I kept
- 6:36Speaker 1: trying to figure out what the whole Methodist thing was
- 6:38Speaker 1: all about. And I would read the writings of the
- 6:40Speaker 1: early Methodists. I'm like, this doesn't make any sense. And
- 6:44Speaker 1: I would ask what they called the bishops and the
- 6:46Speaker 1: elders and the presbyters of the church. And they couldn't
- 6:49Speaker 1: explain to me a single thing. And the preacher had
- 6:52Speaker 1: no idea. And then the Methodist church endorsed gay marriage
- 6:57Speaker 1: and a lot of weird stuff. So I went to
- 7:01Speaker 1: the Southern Baptist Church, thinking it was going to be
- 7:03Speaker 1: more traditional. Got up to Liberty University and was taught
- 7:07Speaker 1: what Baptists actually believe. And I kept saying, wait a minute,
- 7:09Speaker 1: this isn't what the Bible says. They'd say, it's a
- 7:14Speaker 1: sin to drink even a drop of alcohol. And I said,
- 7:16Speaker 1: but the Bible says Jesus made wine. They'd say, no,
- 7:18Speaker 1: Jesus never made wine. And I'd say, no, no, at
- 7:20Speaker 1: the wedding feast at Cana, Jesus made wine. That wasn't
- 7:23Speaker 1: really wine. That was grape juice. And I'm like, no, look, y'all.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Fermentation happens because yeast from the skins of the grape
- 7:32Speaker 1: is introduced to the grape juice. It begins converting the
- 7:34Speaker 1: sugars of grape into wine. The Bible talks about don't
- 7:39Speaker 1: be drunk with wine, so obviously it was real wine. No,
- 7:41Speaker 1: that's not real wine. Okay. You know, I mean, there
- 7:45Speaker 1: were so many little things like that that were just
- 7:47Speaker 1: baffling and bewildering, and I started reading the early church fathers, actually,
- 7:52Speaker 1: because one of my assignments in class was When did
- 7:57Speaker 1: Christians denounce polygamy? And it turned out it was one
- 8:01Speaker 1: of the first popes. And I came to class and
- 8:04Speaker 1: I said, I found it. It's in Christian history. Pope, oh,
- 8:06Speaker 1: we don't believe that. See, Catholics aren't really Christian. Wait
- 8:09Speaker 1: a minute. You gave me an assignment to find historically
- 8:13Speaker 1: where Christianity said no more polygamy. We're only going to
- 8:16Speaker 1: practice monogamy. I brought to you the historical documents and
- 8:20Speaker 1: you deny them. I mean, any. Okay, so where was I?
- 8:29Speaker 1: You really have to wonder how much the Bible Protestants
- 8:32Speaker 1: actually read and understand. But then many of, well, actually
- 8:38Speaker 1: many of the women tried as witches and killed in
- 8:40Speaker 1: Protestant nations, including America, were condemned simply for being seen
- 8:45Speaker 1: praying a rosary and offering prayers for their loved ones
- 8:50Speaker 1: who were in the cemetery. did Cotton Mather and the
- 8:54Speaker 1: other Protestants would say which, and they would be burned
- 8:57Speaker 1: at the stake. The very leaders of the false churches
- 9:01Speaker 1: who claim to obey the Bible alone as a sole
- 9:03Speaker 1: authority seem to have never understood it and to have
- 9:08Speaker 1: had no compunction in committing false witness and even murder. Uh,
- 9:12Speaker 1: let me remind you, Martin Luther bragged about committing murder
- 9:18Speaker 1: and lying. Um, Those who agreed to remove the books
- 9:23Speaker 1: of Maccabees from the Bible because it encourages prayer for
- 9:25Speaker 1: the dead have left millions of Christians ignorant of true
- 9:33Speaker 1: Christian teaching. Let me get that right. The result is
- 9:35Speaker 1: the same as when they claim the Bible prohibits drinking
- 9:38Speaker 1: wine or eating meat. Yes, there are a lot of
- 9:40Speaker 1: Christians who say the Bible forbids eating meat, even though
- 9:43Speaker 1: the Bible specifically commands eating the lamb at the Feast
- 9:47Speaker 1: of Passover. And the first thing Jesus did... Well, not
- 9:50Speaker 1: the first thing, but the third thing he did after
- 9:53Speaker 1: rising from the dead was to eat fish and serve
- 9:55Speaker 1: it to his apostles. But they say, oh, Jesus was
- 9:59Speaker 1: a vegan. No, that's a lie. That's an absolute lie.
- 10:04Speaker 1: They also claim that the Bible mandates Christians follow the
- 10:07Speaker 1: Jewish Sabbath, which Christians have not done since the time
- 10:11Speaker 1: of the apostles because we celebrate the Sabbath on the
- 10:13Speaker 1: day Jesus rose from the dead. That's actually well documented
- 10:17Speaker 1: from the Didache on, so from like 70 A.D. 300
- 10:22Speaker 1: years before the Bible was published. Think about that. What else?
- 10:27Speaker 1: Prayers to the dead, Jewish Sabbath. Oh, dietary. There's still
- 10:32Speaker 1: many Christians who say Christians aren't allowed to eat pork.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Look at the Acts of the Apostles, where they specifically
- 10:38Speaker 1: say we're no longer bound to Jewish dietary laws. But
- 10:42Speaker 1: their false doctrine, in the end, ends up accusing Jesus
- 10:46Speaker 1: and his holy apostles of lying. which is nothing new
- 10:50Speaker 1: as Luther accused Jesus of committing adultery. Luther also said
- 10:55Speaker 1: he would trust his wife and his students before he
- 10:58Speaker 1: would trust Jesus Christ. But if Jesus lied, he cannot
- 11:02Speaker 1: be God. If the apostles who wrote the New Testament lied,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you can't trust the Bible. In refusing to accept the
- 11:12Speaker 1: authority and doctrine of the Catholic Church, Protestants eventually abandoned
- 11:16Speaker 1: the Christian faith entirely. To reject the Catholic Church, eventually,
- 11:23Speaker 1: is to reject the very God who found it. All right, y'all.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Have a good one. And I will talk to you tomorrow.
