- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his word, and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James 1, verses 17 and 18.
- 0:21Today we're going to answer the question, where does good stuff
- 0:26come from? Where does good stuff come from,
- 0:29the good in your life and in my life?
- 0:32Why do we experience it? And is it on the basis of our
- 0:39actions? Is it on the basis of random
- 0:42happenstance? We're going to we're going to
- 0:45discover that today. I'm looking forward to this once
- 0:48again, letter of James the the book of James in Scripture is
- 0:53written from one of the pastors or, or the lead pastor of the
- 0:57church at Jerusalem. And he's writing to people that
- 1:00were once a part of his congregation that through
- 1:03persecution have now been scattered all around the Roman
- 1:07Empire. And he's writing to encourage
- 1:09them and and challenge them. And he writes this in James one
- 1:12and verse 17. Every good and perfect gift is
- 1:16from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not
- 1:21change like shifting shadows. By his own choice He gave us
- 1:27birth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first
- 1:32fruits of his creatures. Love these verses.
- 1:37These honestly are really comforting.
- 1:40Even as I was reading over a couple of these, I was so
- 1:45grateful for who God is and what He has done in my life.
- 1:49And as we talked through a few of these, I hope that's the same
- 1:51take away that you have today. Starting off in verse 17, every
- 1:55good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the
- 2:00Father of lights. Everything that we receive in
- 2:05our life, everything that is good ought to remind us of the
- 2:10fact that God loves us, that the the time in which we live.
- 2:18Even as we would read from Paul's sermon on the Areopagus
- 2:22on Mars Hill in Athens, he tells us that the time in which we
- 2:27live was ordained by God. That the amenities that you're
- 2:33able to enjoy, frankly, the fact that you right now are watching
- 2:36or listening to a podcast either on a computer or on a cell
- 2:43phone, a tablet. I don't know if there's another
- 2:46way to watch or listen to this on ATV.
- 2:51The fact that you have those means that God has been good to
- 2:54you and blessed you with those things.
- 2:57The, the area of the world in which you live was actually set
- 3:03up by God. So whether you are in North
- 3:06America, if you're in Europe, I know we've got some listeners in
- 3:11in the Pacific, if you are in Asia, if you are in Africa, if
- 3:17you're in South America or Central America, God
- 3:20specifically put you there when he put you there for a reason.
- 3:27And it was so that you would be blessed by him with whatever you
- 3:32have in your life, so that you would come to know him again,
- 3:37I'm, I'm leaning heavily on, on Paul's interpretation of our
- 3:42existence. We were made to know and love
- 3:46and follow God with everything that we are.
- 3:49And so for everything that we have, I've, I've got here some,
- 3:52some earbuds that every night I go to bed listening to, to songs
- 3:58or to a book or to scripture, even sometimes to like preaching
- 4:03and, and sermons. And that is a gift from God.
- 4:06And I have to be thankful for that.
- 4:08I have to be thankful for the bed that I lay on every night
- 4:12that God has given me a place to sleep.
- 4:14I can be thankful for the gift of drink of of water of those
- 4:19things that that, that gladden the heart as the, as the
- 4:24prophets would put it. I can be thankful for the word
- 4:28of God that I have. I can be thankful for the, the
- 4:32computer and the microphone and the cell phone that I have that
- 4:37all allow me to be able to record me going through the word
- 4:42of God with you all. I'm so thankful for you all that
- 4:45you get to join me in this study of God's Word.
- 4:50And as I think about all of these things, they didn't just
- 4:53come about by random chance. They came down from my Heavenly
- 4:56Father and from your Heavenly Father.
- 4:58What a good God that we have that as we think about our own
- 5:03lives and the good things that we've received and every meal
- 5:07that we have ever enjoyed. It all comes from our heavenly
- 5:11Father that he has provided everything that we have ever
- 5:15received. He has given us the parents, the
- 5:19the grandparents, the families that we have.
- 5:23He has given those to us. He's given us our friends.
- 5:26He's given us salvation. Obviously that the first and
- 5:30foremost and greatest thing through a relationship with
- 5:33Jesus Christ. He has given us his Holy Spirit.
- 5:36He has given us a, a church family.
- 5:39And if you don't currently have a church community or a church
- 5:42family, please reach out to me. I would love, I don't, I don't
- 5:46know people all over the world, but I also know of some great
- 5:50websites and resources that can, you know, connect people with
- 5:55local churches. God wants that for your life.
- 5:58Maybe if you're homebound and Tabernacle talk tends to be one
- 6:03of the ways in which you are able to still have some sort of
- 6:05a Christian community. So grateful for that and I would
- 6:08love to hear from you as well so that we, you know, I can be
- 6:12praying for you for things that you need.
- 6:15If you have questions, I'd love to be there for you.
- 6:17All of these things, they come from our Heavenly Father that He
- 6:21has blessed us in so many ways. Every breath in our lungs, the
- 6:27blood in her body, the ability to to have some health, to be
- 6:32able to hear or to be able to read, all of those things are
- 6:36gifts from God. When we view everything in our
- 6:40life, every good gift as coming from God, man, we will feel
- 6:46loved. Time would absolutely fail for
- 6:52me to to think about everything that I could thank God for.
- 6:56I think of the old song, count your many blessings, name them
- 6:59one by one. Count your many blessings, see
- 7:02what God has done. Count your blessings, name them
- 7:05one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
- 7:09And may we thank God for everything that we have.
- 7:13So it says every good and perfect gift is from above.
- 7:16It says coming down from the Father of lights.
- 7:19OK, well what? What is the Father of lights?
- 7:21This is the God that rules the days and the seasons.
- 7:25He is the God that is the creator of the sun and moon and
- 7:29stars above, and the one that gave us, if you will, light
- 7:34during the day. The one that makes it so that
- 7:36night itself still has lights and that we can find direction
- 7:41through looking at the stars. And you can think of the, the
- 7:44ships that would travel through a man, even the the
- 7:48Mediterranean. I can think for many of these
- 7:51people that experiencing persecution in Judea and in
- 7:55Jerusalem might have had to take a ship to Italy or to Greece or
- 7:59to Spain or to some, you know, North Africa or one of those
- 8:03other places. That they could think back to
- 8:07those trips and maybe a night that they were traveling and the
- 8:11sailors were using the stars to navigate to where they needed to
- 8:15go. And that James here saying the
- 8:17God that determines that the years and the months that the
- 8:22the lights determine and the God who determines day and night for
- 8:25us, He is the same God that gives us everything.
- 8:30Every time you look up at the sun, every time you see the moon
- 8:34and the stars, you can know that God is caring about you, that
- 8:38he, he's just provided everything for you.
- 8:41And this God who is so provided for us, he is worthy of all of
- 8:46our praise. And even more so the end of
- 8:48verse 17 because he does not change like shifting shadows.
- 8:54God's nature is unchanging and there's never going to be a day
- 8:59where he turns back on his love for you.
- 9:02There's never going to be a day if you have turned to him, a
- 9:05Savior. There's never going to be a day
- 9:08where he goes, OK, well, you messed up, you know, for the
- 9:11last time and I gave you salvation.
- 9:14But then you send, you know, 701 times and that's one time too
- 9:18many. So now you're gone.
- 9:20No, this God who loves us, who provides for us, who has given
- 9:24every good and perfect gift to us, he will never, ever change.
- 9:28And so you can bank on the continued goodness of your
- 9:32heavenly Father. And then verse 18 then turns to
- 9:36the, if you will, the the spiritual side of things so that
- 9:39we would think about God's goodness to us in this specific
- 9:42way. Verse 18 by his own choice, he
- 9:47gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind
- 9:51of firstfruits of his creatures. The beginning of that by his own
- 9:55choice, no one forced God to love you.
- 9:59No one forced God to make you a Christian.
- 10:02No one forced God to forgive you of your sins and to give you a
- 10:07home with him forever. No, it was God's choice.
- 10:11And yes, we respond in faith to God.
- 10:14No one's going to get to heaven and be like, hey, I never
- 10:17accepted the Lord. I never believed in Jesus.
- 10:20No one's going to come to heaven saying that.
- 10:22He's not going to force anyone into that.
- 10:26But our salvation is God's choice.
- 10:28It's not primarily our choice, we respond, but it is his action
- 10:33of love that has given us salvation.
- 10:35He says. By his own choice He gave us
- 10:37birth. By the word of truth, He was, if
- 10:41you will. Well, I was going to say, here
- 10:47we have a, a illustration that's used of, of a mother that gives
- 10:52birth and the love that a mother has for her child.
- 10:55God loves us in in that kind of way.
- 11:00And so he, he has given us birth.
- 11:02And by what way did God change us?
- 11:06What way did he give us new life?
- 11:09It says by the word of truth there is no salvation that is
- 11:15found outside of the truth of the Word of God.
- 11:20Our basis of faith and new life is by believing the gospel.
- 11:29Hear this word of truth. These people would not have had
- 11:32the finished New Testament. This may have been the first or
- 11:35second book of the New Testament that was written.
- 11:40So here he's not saying, OK, if you have a Bible, you can, you
- 11:45know, be given birth into God's family.
- 11:48You know, it's saying by believing the truth of the
- 11:50gospel, which was what these people did have, and by
- 11:53believing in that word of God, we are transformed from the
- 11:59Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of light, from death
- 12:02into new life in Christ, from being an orphan, if you will,
- 12:06into being the children of the Father of lights.
- 12:10And so it is, it is Scripture, it is God's truth.
- 12:15And and certainly now that we have the whole Bible, praise the
- 12:18Lord that we have this word of truth.
- 12:20And when God wants to make a people, he uses his word, his
- 12:25truth, his message. So let's be faithful to learn
- 12:28and know and memorize the word of truth because it is so
- 12:33valuable for our souls. It is how God transforms us
- 12:37through his Holy Spirit working through the communication that
- 12:41he has given to us. So he gave us birth by the word
- 12:45of truth for what reason? Just so that we He would be a
- 12:48kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
- 12:53Firstfruits refers to the best that the harvest produces.
- 12:58God gives good gifts that yield wondrous fruit.
- 13:01Not as we read in verse #15 not temptation that leads to death
- 13:08through wayward desires. Following God results in the
- 13:13fruit of the Spirit in our life. It results in a heavenly home.
- 13:16It does not result in death, death and devastation like sin
- 13:20does in our life. When we listen to God, when we
- 13:22love him, when we follow him man, there are there are good
- 13:26works ahead for us. We get to see our Father's hand
- 13:28and everything. And at the end of our life we
- 13:31experience free and full salvation forever from even the
- 13:35very presence of sin. It will be gone.
- 13:39So as a result of this, we can rejoice in the Lord, we can
- 13:43praise him, we can follow him, we can love his word, we can
- 13:47give thanks to Him we can tell other people about him here that
- 13:51we would be a kind of first fruits of his creatures that God
- 13:56wants you to make more Christians.
- 13:58God wants you to see your loved ones saved.
- 14:02God wants to use you to see your coworkers come to know the Lord
- 14:07and I I've often mentioned that doesn't mean like, OK, you got
- 14:11to do, you know, the the A-frame bored thing and you know, shout
- 14:18in your workplace, you better turn a burn.
- 14:20You better get right or get left.
- 14:21You better get sanctified or get chicken fried.
- 14:24You you don't have to do that, but the same way that God saved
- 14:28you, God wants you to pass that on to someone else and that it
- 14:33can happen not because of you and not because of your choice,
- 14:37not because of your like great salesmanship, but because again,
- 14:42verse 18 by God's choice and by the word of truth.
- 14:49So we proclaim the gospel message and we know that as as
- 14:56I'm about to preach actually this, yeah, this Sunday when I'm
- 15:00recording this that everyone that the Father has given to
- 15:05Jesus will come to him and the person that comes to him Jesus
- 15:08will never cast out. So no, know this God has a
- 15:13people and that is we proclaim that God's people will listen
- 15:18and they will come to him. Sometimes it might be, you know,
- 15:20the very first time that they hear the gospel.
- 15:22For some people it might be after 25 years they finally
- 15:25yield to the gospel. But know this, you have a good
- 15:29Father who loves you as who has given you everything in your
- 15:32life. So respond in obedience and love
- 15:35and praise to Him and see His handiwork in everything in your
- 15:40life and what joy we find in that.
- 15:43Thanks for tuning in today, tomorrow.
- 15:46Really looking forward to the time.
- 15:47Actually, my very first sermon I ever preached.
- 15:50I preached from James 1 verses 19 through 21 and here now.
- 15:57Oh man, I would have preached that in 6th grade and probably
- 16:0515. Somewhere between like 15 to 17
- 16:09years ago I preached this passage, and now I'm going to be
- 16:12teaching it in a Tabernacle Talk episode and looking forward to
- 16:16that time together.
