- 0:30It's Sean here, and boy am I delighted that you have found a
- 0:34moment on this, the most glorious of days, to take a
- 0:38moment from all the celebration of our Lord's birth to hear the
- 0:41story of our Lord's birth. Oh, and that's what we're going
- 0:44to do today. Friends, I know you've got lots
- 0:47to do with Turkey and ham and family and presents and heading
- 0:52to church and all the rest of it.
- 0:54So why don't you and I just jump into it and read this wonderful
- 0:58story together? This is why we celebrate.
- 1:00This is what it's all about, our Saviour being born today.
- 1:04Merry Christmas. Let us read together Luke
- 1:07chapter 2. At that time, the Roman Emperor
- 1:20Augustus decreed that a census should be taken throughout the
- 1:24Roman Empire. This was the first census taken
- 1:27when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
- 1:29All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for
- 1:33the census, and because Joseph was a descendant of King David,
- 1:37he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David's ancient home.
- 1:42He travelled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.
- 1:45He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now
- 1:49expecting a child. And while they were there, the
- 1:53time came for her baby to be born.
- 1:56She gave birth to her first born son.
- 2:00She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a
- 2:04Manger. Because there was no lodging
- 2:06available for them that night, there were shepherds staying in
- 2:10the fields near by, guarding their flocks of sheep.
- 2:13Suddenly an Angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the
- 2:17radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them.
- 2:20They were terrified, but the Angel reassured them.
- 2:24Don't be afraid, he said, I bring you good news that will
- 2:28bring great joy to all people. The Saviour, yes, the Messiah,
- 2:33the Lord has been born to day in Bethlehem, the city of David,
- 2:38and you will recognise him by this sign.
- 2:41He will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth lying
- 2:45in a Manger. Suddenly the Angel was joined by
- 2:49a vast host of others, the armies of heaven, praising God
- 2:54and saying, Glory to God in highest heaven and peace on
- 2:59earth to those with whom God is pleased.
- 3:03When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to
- 3:06each other, Let's go to Bethlehem, let's see this thing
- 3:10that has happened which the Lord has told us about.
- 3:13They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph, and there
- 3:17was the baby lying in the Manger.
- 3:21After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened
- 3:25and what the Angel had said to them about this child.
- 3:28All who heard the shepherd's story were astonished.
- 3:32Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them
- 3:36often. The shepherds went back to their
- 3:39flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and
- 3:44seen. It was just as the Angel had
- 3:47told them. Eight days later when the baby
- 3:51was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the
- 3:55Angel before he was conceived. Then it was time for their
- 3:59purification offering as required by the Law of Moses
- 4:03after the birth of a child. So his parents took him to
- 4:07Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.
- 4:10The Law of the Lord says if a woman's first child is a boy, he
- 4:14must be dedicated to the Lord. So they offered the sacrifice
- 4:18required in the Law of the Lord, either a pair of turtle doves or
- 4:23two young pigeons. At that time there was a man in
- 4:27Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and
- 4:31was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue
- 4:34Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and
- 4:38had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen
- 4:42the Lord's Messiah. That day.
- 4:45The Spirit led him to the temple.
- 4:48So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the
- 4:51Lord as the law required, Simeon was there.
- 4:55He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying,
- 4:59Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace as you have
- 5:05promised. I have seen your salvation,
- 5:09which you have prepared for all people.
- 5:12He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and He is the glory
- 5:17of your people, Israel. Jesus parents were amazed at
- 5:22what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and he
- 5:26said to Mary, the baby's mother. This child is destined to cause
- 5:31many in Israel to fall and many others to rise.
- 5:36He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him.
- 5:41As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be
- 5:45revealed, and a sword will Pierce your very soul.
- 5:51Anna, a prophet, was also there in the temple.
- 5:55She was the daughter of Fanuwel from the tribe of Asher, and she
- 5:58was very old. Her husband died when they had
- 6:01been married only seven years. Then she lived as a widow to the
- 6:05age of 84. She never left the temple, but
- 6:09stayed there day and night, worshipping God with fasting and
- 6:13prayer. She came along just as Simeon
- 6:16was talking with Mary and Joseph and she began praising God.
- 6:20She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting
- 6:23expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.
- 6:27When Jesus parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the Law
- 6:30of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee.
- 6:34There the child grew up healthy and strong.
- 6:38He was filled with wisdom and God's favour was on him.
- 6:43Every year Jesus parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover
- 6:46festival. When Jesus was 12 years old.
- 6:50They attended the festival as usual.
- 6:53After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth.
- 6:57But Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.
- 7:00His parents didn't miss him at first because they assumed he
- 7:04was among the other travellers. But when he didn't show up that
- 7:07evening, they started looking for him among their relatives
- 7:10and friends. When they couldn't find him,
- 7:13they went back to Jerusalem to search for him there.
- 7:16Three days later, they finally discovered him in the Temple,
- 7:22sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and
- 7:25asking questions. All who heard him were amazed at
- 7:30his understanding and his answers.
- 7:33His parents didn't know what to think.
- 7:35Son, his mother said to him, Why have you done this to us?
- 7:40Your father and I have been frantic searching for you
- 7:42everywhere. But why did you need to search?
- 7:46He asked. Didn't you know that I must be
- 7:49in my father's house? But they didn't understand what
- 7:52he meant. Then he returned to Nazareth
- 7:56with them and was obedient to them.
- 7:58And his mother stored all these things in her heart.
- 8:03Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favour with God
- 8:07and all the people. Jesus, you are born on Christmas
- 8:22Day. You have come to save the world
- 8:26and save it. You have.
- 8:28You lived a perfect life, Jesus, and you gave up everything for
- 8:33us to restore us to your Father. And in this way, just as that
- 8:39man in the temple, Simeon said, you Jesus, are a light to reveal
- 8:46God to the nations you have come to.
- 8:50Let us know what God is like. A God of love, a God of mercy, a
- 8:56God of compassion, a God of action, so that every single
- 9:01person who lives can know who God is and that God is for us.
- 9:08Oh Jesus, we are so grateful that you came on this day all
- 9:15those years ago. Ah, we worship you, we praise
- 9:19you, and we thank you for your goodness to us.
- 9:23And as we celebrate today, oh, may our hearts just sing for all
- 9:28that you've done for us. We pray this in your holy and
- 9:32saving name, Jesus, Amen.
