Transcript
- 0:02Recovery changes people. Healing changes people.
- 0:07Surviving something difficult changes people.
- 0:11And that is good, because healing matters, Recovery
- 0:15matters. Freedom matters.
- 0:18But eventually a question begins to emerge, Who am I now?
- 0:24Because there comes a point where people realize that they
- 0:28are no longer who they are outside of the struggle.
- 0:32The meetings become identity, journey becomes the identity,
- 0:38the rebuilding becomes the identity.
- 0:40The healing becomes the identity.
- 0:44And well, the growth happened. The becoming stopped.
- 0:50Because sometimes people move out of crisis, but they never
- 0:54move into calling. They survive, but they stop
- 1:00there. Today we're talking about
- 1:03recovery, identity. What happens when healing
- 1:07becomes a whole story? Welcome to Unmask, where we take
- 1:18off the filters and we get real about pace, failure, healing,
- 1:22and finding freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:24Farnsworth, and this is episode 3 in our miniseries Who Am I
- 1:29Really? In episode 1, we talked about
- 1:33trauma identity, when pain becomes your name.
- 1:37In episode 2, we talked about the performance identity, when
- 1:41achievement becomes worse. And today we're stepping into
- 1:45another identity, one that often develops after healing begins,
- 1:51and that is recovery Identity, because recovery is beautiful.
- 1:57Healing matters, freedom matters.
- 2:00And eventually every person reaches a moment where they must
- 2:03ask, am I still surviving or am I becoming?
- 2:09So? Take a breath, pull up a chair,
- 2:12and let's dive in. This is unmasked.
- 2:24Now let me get something straight here.
- 2:25Recovery is not the problem. Healing is not the problem.
- 2:33Growth is not the problem. For many people, recovery saved
- 2:38their life. It gave them language,
- 2:41community, hope, truth, and structure.
- 2:45Recovery becomes a place, or became a place where people
- 2:49finally realized that they could stop hiding and they could take
- 2:53off their mask. And that matters because
- 2:57eventually recover and that matters.
- 3:02But eventually recovery must evolve because recovery was
- 3:08never meant to become the destination.
- 3:12It was meant to become the doorway.
- 3:15The goal was never survival forever.
- 3:18The goal was freedom. But it's very easy for survival
- 3:28to become your identity. See trauma.
- 3:32Identity says I am what happened to me, but recovery says I am
- 3:36what I survived. And that may feel healthier, but
- 3:41it can still become limiting because now your identity lives
- 3:46inside of the struggle. Your identity becomes the
- 3:50recovering person, the survivor, the rebuilding one, the one
- 3:55healing. And eventually those labels
- 3:59become your home and then makes you want to stay there.
- 4:06It makes you want to stay there because it feels safe.
- 4:09The struggle becomes familiar. The healing becomes familiar.
- 4:15Starting over becomes familiar, and moving beyond that identity
- 4:22becomes scary, even terrifying, because if I'm no longer the
- 4:28survivor, then who am I? One of the strongest pictures of
- 4:34this is Israel leaving Egypt. God frees them and breaks
- 4:40chains. He moves them out and delivers
- 4:43them. But even after freedom, Egypt
- 4:46stayed inside of them. They kept looking back.
- 4:52They kept longing for what was familiar.
- 4:56Even slavery felt safer than an uncertainty.
- 5:01Think about that for a second. Bondage was familiar, and
- 5:05freedom was foreign. People still do this today, not
- 5:12because they want pain, but because familiar pain is safer
- 5:17than unfamiliar. Growth, recovery, identity
- 5:22sometimes does that. It keeps people looking
- 5:25backwards, always remembering, always surviving, always
- 5:30rebuilding, but never becoming. There's comfort in staying the
- 5:39survivor because survivor identity carries meaning.
- 5:47It comes with community purpose. Understanding and stepping
- 5:52beyond that can feel like betrayal, like moving forward
- 5:57means minimizing what happened. But healing does not dishonor
- 6:03pain. It honors redemption.
- 6:07You are allowed to move forward. You are allowed to become more
- 6:13than your hardest season. You are allowed to stop
- 6:17introducing yourself by your wounds because surviving was
- 6:23never meant to become your ceiling.
- 6:29Healing is a beautiful thing, but healing is also
- 6:33transitional. At some point, the question has
- 6:37to shift, has to shift from what am I healing from to what am I
- 6:45building towards. And that's where some people get
- 6:49stuck because pain gave them direction, but recovery gave
- 6:56structure. And that's where some people get
- 7:01stuck. Because pain gave direction,
- 7:04recovery gave structure, healing gave purpose.
- 7:09And now life feels all uncertain all over again.
- 7:13And now life feels uncertain all over again.
- 7:19Because becoming requires imagination, it requires vision,
- 7:24it requires future, and future feel very risky after pain.
- 7:32Pain teaches survival, but calling requires hope.
- 7:38Paul understood this. When you look at scripture, he
- 7:43had history, failure, regret. Paul had a past.
- 7:49Yet listen to his words, he says, forgetting what is behind
- 7:55and straining towards what is ahead.
- 7:59Paul is not denying his past here, but he does refuse to live
- 8:04in it. And that's different because
- 8:08healing does not erase memory, but it changes momentum.
- 8:15Recovery identity looks backwards.
- 8:17For me, Calling identity begins looking forward, and eventually
- 8:23every person must choose. Will my story stop at healing,
- 8:30or will it continue into becoming?
- 8:36See, one of the dangers of recovery identity is that people
- 8:40become permanently attached to their hardest season.
- 8:45The struggle becomes central, the pain becomes central, the
- 8:52survival becomes central, and life keeps orbiting around that
- 8:58same chapter. But your worst season is not
- 9:02your whole identity. It does not define you.
- 9:07Your hardest chapter is not your whole identity.
- 9:12What happened matters. What you survived matters, but
- 9:19so does who you are becoming. You are more than the season
- 9:24that almost broke you. There's a reason that this
- 9:31identity or this idea resonates with me so personally.
- 9:38You see, recovery became the doorway to my life change in my
- 9:42own life. For years, there were parts of
- 9:45my life that felt stuck. There were patterns that I
- 9:49couldn't break, struggles that I carried quietly.
- 9:54And eventually, I reached the point where I realized that I
- 9:57couldn't keep doing life the way that I had been.
- 10:01The journey led me into recovery through Celebrate Recovery, And
- 10:06more importantly, it led me deeper into Christ.
- 10:11Recovery gave me a language. It gave me community and
- 10:16honesty. It gave me a place where I could
- 10:19take off my mask and healing could begin.
- 10:24And through that process, God began doing more than helping me
- 10:28find freedom from an addiction. He began changing how I saw
- 10:32myself. Because at first, recovery was
- 10:36all about survival, and then came the healing.
- 10:41And eventually God started asking a different question.
- 10:49He started asking, now, who are you becoming?
- 10:54And that question changed everything.
- 10:58Today, part of that answer has become writing books, speaking,
- 11:02and hosting this very podcast. Not because I have everything
- 11:07figured out, and definitely not because I have arrived, but
- 11:12because God took a season that began with brokenness and
- 11:16started shaping purpose from it. And honestly, I think that that
- 11:21journey of discovery never stops.
- 11:26I don't think we ever arrive at some final version of ourselves
- 11:30where growth ends and understanding is complete.
- 11:35I think following Christ is a lifelong process of discovery of
- 11:39who we are in Him. And layer by layer, season by
- 11:45season, calling by calling recovery was not the
- 11:50destination, it was the doorway. And maybe for some of you
- 11:55listening, it's the doorway for you too.
- 12:02So what do we do with this? Well, we ask new questions.
- 12:10We don't just ask ourselves, what are we leaving behind?
- 12:13What am I leaving behind? But we ask questions like, what
- 12:20am I moving towards? What am I building?
- 12:24What am I becoming? What future is God inviting me
- 12:29into? Because maybe you're not just
- 12:33the survivor. Maybe you are not just the
- 12:38recovering person. Maybe you are not just the one
- 12:42rebuilding. Maybe you are becoming something
- 12:46new. So let me ask you, have you
- 12:52built your identity around surviving?
- 12:56Have you become attached to the version of yourself that lived
- 13:01through pain? What future feels difficult to
- 13:06imagine? And what would happen if you
- 13:09stopped asking what happened to me and started asking what is
- 13:15God building in me? Because maybe the next season of
- 13:20your life is not about surviving at all.
- 13:23Maybe it's about becoming. Think about that.
- 13:36Next time on Unmasked, we're going to talk about clean
- 13:39identity. Because identity is not
- 13:42ultimately found in trauma or performance or even recovery.
- 13:47Eventually the question becomes who did God create me to be?
- 13:53And that happens when your identity shifts from survival to
- 13:57purpose. Until next time, remember this,
- 14:02recovery matters, healing matters, but surviving was never
- 14:07meant to become your final identity.
- 14:11You are more than what you lived for, you are becoming.
- 14:17God bless.
