- 0:13Speaker 1: Steve robertson Mississippi State football insider jeanspage dot com two
- 0:18Speaker 1: four seven Sports. Steve, what is the latest on some
- 0:22Speaker 1: players possibly coming back because of the rulings in the
- 0:27Speaker 1: court for Mississippi State.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Well, really, not a lot of has changed, other in
- 0:33Speaker 2: the fact that the league Sila and Jeron Manning have
- 0:36Speaker 2: returned to campus, but they are not eligible to participate now.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Of course, there's some state courts out there that may disagree,
- 0:44Speaker 2: but the SEC for the most part is kind of
- 0:47Speaker 2: waiting out miss appeal in the Tenth Circuit Appellate Court
- 0:51Speaker 2: on a federal level, and so that's where things stand.
- 0:55Speaker 2: And yeah, nobody should expect much soon. But there was
- 1:00Speaker 2: some chatter that maybe we'd get an answer on the
- 1:04Speaker 2: expedited requests for us say, but that looks like it's
- 1:08Speaker 2: going to leak in the next week and then then
- 1:10Speaker 2: we'll see what happens from there.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Okay, when do you expect this to happen in the
- 1:15Speaker 1: next what's the timeline.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, next week. I think next week we'll get So basically,
- 1:22Speaker 2: what the NCAA has done is there was a two
- 1:27Speaker 2: prong motion, right they filed within the District court with
- 1:32Speaker 2: jud Charlotte T. Sweening, but they went ahead and filed
- 1:35Speaker 2: that expedited appeal to the Tenth Circuit, And so they're
- 1:39Speaker 2: basically just trying to get everything overturned. And you know,
- 1:42Speaker 2: they're you know, the experts are kind of mixed on
- 1:45Speaker 2: what would happen here. And from what I've gathered from
- 1:48Speaker 2: talking to you know, Tom Mars and some other people
- 1:51Speaker 2: and reading what they have to say, is that, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 2: the Tenth Circuit is one of those appellate courts that
- 1:57Speaker 2: kind of favors the status quo, and so it'll be
- 2:00Speaker 2: interesting to see kind of how this anti trust case
- 2:03Speaker 2: is viewed.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So that'll be interesting and we'll see
- 2:12Speaker 1: how that plays out. All right. As far as what
- 2:16Speaker 1: you've heard about football practice, what's the most exciting thing
- 2:24Speaker 1: that you've heard in the last couple of days around
- 2:26Speaker 1: the Mississippi State football program.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Well, you know, we've had a chance to take intermal
- 2:31Speaker 2: practice too. And the first thing that I would say
- 2:34Speaker 2: is that, you know, last year they took a step
- 2:36Speaker 2: forward on the roster and on the one beep side
- 2:39Speaker 2: they look like an SEC team, But as you guys
- 2:42Speaker 2: saw as the year went on, you know, the depth
- 2:44Speaker 2: really wasn't there. This team appears to have more depth.
- 2:47Speaker 2: And well, last year when you had an injury on
- 2:50Speaker 2: the offensive, why the game was racked, right, I don't
- 2:53Speaker 2: think that's the case at this point. They look a
- 2:56Speaker 2: lot more physical. They're certainly going to be very speedy
- 3:00Speaker 2: at the wide receiver position, and I think that's probably
- 3:02Speaker 2: always the case under Jeff Leby. I mean, you get
- 3:06Speaker 2: back to back all SEC receivers and for the first
- 3:09Speaker 2: time in forever you have a receiver drafted to the
- 3:13Speaker 2: National Football League, and so they're going to be able
- 3:16Speaker 2: to make plays down the field. You know, the real
- 3:19Speaker 2: question is going to be can they protect at a
- 3:20Speaker 2: higher level? And I think the early return suggests that
- 3:23Speaker 2: they should be able to.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Okay, so you have confidence that the offensive line can
- 3:31Speaker 1: be at least solid for Mississippi State.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think if you're Jeff Lebey, I mean
- 3:38Speaker 2: to be solid is you know, light years of where
- 3:42Speaker 2: you were last year in the last six weeks of
- 3:45Speaker 2: the season. You know, I think that's the whole thing
- 3:48Speaker 2: would leave when you've got a quarterback and you're trying
- 3:50Speaker 2: to make plays down the field. You got a guy
- 3:52Speaker 2: with a big arm to get it there. You just
- 3:53Speaker 2: got to give you some time. And that left tackle
- 3:56Speaker 2: position last year was it's an unmitigated disaster much of
- 3:59Speaker 2: the year, especially once you got out of the month
- 4:01Speaker 2: of September. And one of the things that I think
- 4:04Speaker 2: a lot of people maybe tend to forget. Mississippi State's
- 4:08Speaker 2: defense got exposed in the second half of that Arizona
- 4:11Speaker 2: State game, but then you didn't play anybody for about
- 4:14Speaker 2: a month that had the ability to exploit that weakness. Well,
- 4:18Speaker 2: the back half of the season, everybody played had the
- 4:21Speaker 2: ability to exploit that weakness. And so what Zach Arnett's
- 4:26Speaker 2: task will be is to kind of create havoc. And
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know, Colman huts Or had this whole read and
- 4:31Speaker 2: react defense with some guys at times you are marginal
- 4:35Speaker 2: SEC players. I think Zach Barnett's got obviously more to
- 4:38Speaker 2: work with, but also I think schematically he's well ahead
- 4:42Speaker 2: of what do you think Coltman huts will put on
- 4:43Speaker 2: the field.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Steve robertson jeans page dot Com two four seven sports,
- 4:49Speaker 1: he joins us on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line. Okay,
- 4:55Speaker 1: show offense. You feel like the offensive line will be
- 5:00Speaker 1: at least a little bit better. And now you've got
- 5:02Speaker 1: a quarterback who can run. So when you combo that,
- 5:06Speaker 1: the defense will actually have to stay somewhat honest and
- 5:09Speaker 1: can't just focus on the tailback, I mean that I
- 5:14Speaker 1: don't even know. We can't really quantify that, but that
- 5:17Speaker 1: should help. Let's go in the defensive line. What what
- 5:24Speaker 1: are you hearing about? What Zach Arnett actually has to
- 5:27Speaker 1: work with.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, this is where I think the MO league see
- 5:31Speaker 2: what things interesting? You know, because in the Jeff Levy era,
- 5:34Speaker 2: State has really struggled to get an edge out of
- 5:37Speaker 2: the portal. Well, you get at Mari Wigans from Florida State,
- 5:40Speaker 2: who is a freak, right, But that's because of a
- 5:43Speaker 2: pre existing relationship with Zach Arnett. Now, Zach that dorn
- 5:47Speaker 2: take credit for that, but familiarity certainly helped in that respect.
- 5:51Speaker 2: But yeah, Duey Jenkins has gotten to done some things
- 5:55Speaker 2: and uh, you know the that looks good. I mean,
- 5:57Speaker 2: it's you know, they're gonna have some guys out there
- 6:00Speaker 2: that our net can work with, and it's not going
- 6:03Speaker 2: to be a situation where it's going to rush for
- 6:06Speaker 2: as you know from the you know, the four years
- 6:10Speaker 2: that Jack Arnett was here. They're gonna start blitzing in
- 6:14Speaker 2: pregame warm ups and if you get them, you get them.
- 6:16Speaker 2: But it's not going to be a situation where they're
- 6:18Speaker 2: gonna let you dictate terms and just kind of talking
- 6:20Speaker 2: to players. Defensive players have an attack first mentality. They
- 6:25Speaker 2: don't want to be on their heels. They want to
- 6:27Speaker 2: be out in the front right. They want to go
- 6:29Speaker 2: get the quarterback. They're want to go chase the football,
- 6:32Speaker 2: and so it's difficult to prepare for all of the
- 6:35Speaker 2: slants and exotic fires that they run stuff. And so
- 6:40Speaker 2: the kids have really embraced this, and even the guys
- 6:43Speaker 2: that are returners will tell you this is a lot
- 6:45Speaker 2: more fun to play.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Steve Robertson on the Out of Bounds Show, a listener
- 6:51Speaker 1: one to know, we've got a minute here, Steve braylen Womack,
- 6:54Speaker 1: what are your expectations this year?
- 6:57Speaker 2: I think he ends up being a two deeper and
- 6:59Speaker 2: by the end of the year, because he is so athletic,
- 7:02Speaker 2: I think he'll get a lot of playing time. But
- 7:03Speaker 2: you know, Kendall Dolby and Jordan Gilbert are really good players.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And I think that's the thing that maybe people need
- 7:10Speaker 2: to prepare themselves for, is even if Jerry Manning gets approved,
- 7:15Speaker 2: there's a possibility that States recruited over right, and.
- 7:19Speaker 1: That's a which is a good thing.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Too deeper and so and that's a good thing.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:24Speaker 2: If Geron Manning is too deeper and he was your
- 7:26Speaker 2: primary safety last year, then you've done really well in
- 7:28Speaker 2: the portal.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Okay, So again, thirty seconds to a minute, they believe
- 7:35Speaker 1: that they've actually hit on more guys in the portal
- 7:38Speaker 1: on both sides of the ball.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's the belief today. But until we
- 7:43Speaker 2: get on the grass and play an actual opponent, it's
- 7:45Speaker 2: tough to really know. But I can just tell you
- 7:49Speaker 2: from a looks standpoint. You're watching those guys get out
- 7:52Speaker 2: there and run around a little bit, it looks different,
- 7:54Speaker 2: you know, And that's what what our fans want to know. Right.
- 7:57Speaker 2: They're just so tired to count and games, you know,
- 7:59Speaker 2: and hope the eligible but right, yeah, this should be
- 8:03Speaker 2: able to do that.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Okay, we'll do this again for a longer segment next week.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Appreciate it.
