• 0:04
Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia Judice, Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler. Hi.
• 0:12
Speaker 2: This is Joan Vassost and I am joined by Jenfessler
• 0:16
Speaker 2: and Daisy Kent. Today we're here to talk all things
• 0:20
  Speaker 2: dorm rooms.
• 0:21
Speaker 1: We are bringing in a very talented designer, very beautiful style.
• 0:27
Speaker 1: We are looking right now at this extraordinary dorm room.
• 0:30
Speaker 1: Let's talk to interior designer Lisa Dias.
• 0:35
  Speaker 3: Hi.
• 0:36
Speaker 4: Hi, Lisa, are all good, Thank you for joining us,
• 0:41
Speaker 4: Thank you for having me.
• 0:43
Speaker 3: Where are you from? We hear the accent?
• 0:45
Speaker 4: Okay, so I was afraid of that. I am Jackson, Mississippi. Nice.
• 0:50
  Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
• 0:53
Speaker 4: I don't have an accent, but everybody else does.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, you have an accent here on this
• 0:59
Speaker 1: podcast and it's adorable.
• 1:01
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:02
  Speaker 2: I'm jealous. I want one.
• 1:04
  Speaker 1: Thank you.
• 1:04
  Speaker 4: I don't get that often.
• 1:06
Speaker 1: Well, tell us Lisa about first quick yourself. Where'd you
• 1:10
Speaker 1: go to school? Why did you want to design the
• 1:12
  Speaker 1: dorm rooms?
• 1:13
Speaker 4: I actually went to school at Delta State University, which
• 1:15
Speaker 4: was a small college here in town, but ended up
• 1:18
Speaker 4: doing a lot of set design. I was an art major.
• 1:21
Speaker 4: Design major. The dorm story, though, is a little bit
• 1:28
Speaker 4: unbelievable because I started designing dorms in twenty fifteen for
• 1:32
  Speaker 4: blond people.
• 1:34
  Speaker 3: Wow.
• 1:35
Speaker 4: So so here's the way that it evolved is I'm
• 1:39
Speaker 4: a painter and I'm an artist, and you know, when
• 1:43
Speaker 4: I went to when I went to school, I was
• 1:45
Speaker 4: very creative. But I used to get homesick a lot.
• 1:49
Speaker 4: And so my dorm, even though my dorm, you guys,
• 1:52
Speaker 4: was like one mile away from my house, I got homesick.
• 1:55
Speaker 4: But because I love my you know, my family. I
• 1:58
Speaker 4: have such a fun family. But anyway, so I remember, like,
• 2:01
Speaker 4: because that was in the eighties, I had roblow posters
• 2:03
Speaker 4: and a Neon phone and you know, a zebra bread
• 2:07
Speaker 4: bedspread from Spiegel, which you know the time. That's all.
• 2:10
Speaker 4: It was fabulous. But I remember dipping my hands in
• 2:13
Speaker 4: like black oil based paint and like doing designs all
• 2:16
Speaker 4: over my walls and design it well you know what
• 2:18
Speaker 4: that was before I knew you couldn't do ol based
• 2:20
Speaker 4: on walls. And I did get fined, but you know,
• 2:24
  Speaker 4: it was just.
• 2:25
Speaker 3: It's all worth it.
• 2:27
Speaker 4: It was all It was so worth it because it
• 2:28
Speaker 4: was the space that I loved and I didn't get homesick,
• 2:30
Speaker 4: and you know, and I felt like I was home
• 2:33
Speaker 4: even though I wasn't home. So but fast forward and
• 2:38
Speaker 4: I moved to Jackson. I lived in Los Angeles a
• 2:41
Speaker 4: little while, and I've lived all over, but moved back
• 2:44
Speaker 4: to Mississippi and I was in Jackson and this this
• 2:48
Speaker 4: lady was like, Lisa, you really need to since you paint,
• 2:50
Speaker 4: you need to join this Canton flea market. You know,
• 2:54
Speaker 4: it's a big deal. Millions of people go. So you
• 2:56
Speaker 4: still you need to set up a booth and sell
• 2:58
Speaker 4: your things. So I was like, oh, okay. At the time,
• 3:00
Speaker 4: I did pointalism paintings, which is tons of tiny little
• 3:03
Speaker 4: dots that ended up making up you know, painting. They're
• 3:06
  Speaker 4: very time consuming. But y'all, y'all, I didn't sell one
• 3:10
Speaker 4: thing all day, Like I was there the whole day.
• 3:12
Speaker 4: Did not sell one thing because it wasn't on a stick,
• 3:15
  Speaker 4: it didn't say happy fall, y'all. I mean, I was
• 3:17
Speaker 4: clearly I had, like, you know, my art was they're
• 3:21
Speaker 4: nice pieces, well so I think, And but at the
• 3:25
Speaker 4: end of the day, this mom and daughter walked into
• 3:28
Speaker 4: my booths and I was kind of taking it down,
• 3:31
Speaker 4: and she started feeling everything, y'all. She was the mom
• 3:35
Speaker 4: was blonde. The daughter was telling her what was in
• 3:39
Speaker 4: the painting, and she was touching it and feeling it
• 3:41
Speaker 4: because it was pointalism and all these tiny little dots.
• 3:43
Speaker 4: She was feeling her way through the art. And so
• 3:47
Speaker 4: I became so intrigued with that, how y'all. She bought
• 3:51
Speaker 4: four paintings from me, and so it was kind of
• 3:53
Speaker 4: the running joke forever that I can't sell anything unless
• 3:57
Speaker 4: people can't see it. But it became very intrigued with this.
• 4:04
Speaker 4: And so Mississippi is known for they have a school
• 4:08
Speaker 4: for the deaf and blind, and so I reached out
• 4:12
Speaker 4: to them and I viewed both campuses. The deaf school
• 4:17
Speaker 4: was gorgeous. They had new bamboo flooring, they had state
• 4:21
Speaker 4: of the art everything. And then when I went to
• 4:23
Speaker 4: the school for the blind, you know, which was across
• 4:26
Speaker 4: the sidewalk, it was the most depressing thing.
• 4:30
  Speaker 3: It was.
• 4:31
Speaker 4: It made me homesick and I didn't even live there,
• 4:33
Speaker 4: and I just got that same homesick feeling that I
• 4:35
Speaker 4: did back when, you know, I was in college at
• 4:37
Speaker 4: the dorm and they have over I think we did
• 4:41
Speaker 4: over forty dorms there, so what I did was I
• 4:45
Speaker 4: was asking them. I said, do y'all not get funded
• 4:48
Speaker 4: by the state. They said, oh, no, we get a
• 4:49
Speaker 4: lot of money from the state. But everyone has a
• 4:53
Speaker 4: different level of blindness, and so some see pitch blacks,
• 4:57
Speaker 4: some see like little tiny pinholes, you know. Some can
• 5:00
Speaker 4: see color and it's blurry, you know. So they said,
• 5:03
Speaker 4: we have to buy textbooks to accommodate every single type
• 5:08
Speaker 4: of blindness. So one textbook could be twenty to forty
• 5:10
Speaker 4: thousand dollars depending on the type of blondness you have.
• 5:14
Speaker 4: So that so they didn't have enough money to fund
• 5:17
Speaker 4: the living quarters. So I spearheaded. You know, I'm just
• 5:21
Speaker 4: a professional volunteer. I raise money all the time and
• 5:25
Speaker 4: not with any organizations, just on my own when I
• 5:28
Speaker 4: see a call that I'm passionate about, and I reached
• 5:30
Speaker 4: out to a lot of people. I think this was
• 5:32
Speaker 4: like twenty fifteen. I raised about ten thousand dollars to
• 5:36
Speaker 4: redo about It was about, I guess, about thirty dorms,
• 5:40
Speaker 4: thirty doors, and the lobbies and the kitchen, and so
• 5:44
Speaker 4: everybody was kept saying, you know, why are you doing this?
• 5:46
Speaker 4: They can't see and I'm like, y'all, but they can
• 5:49
Speaker 4: and they can feel, and so I reached out to
• 5:52
Speaker 4: some schools that needed you know, volunteer hours, you know,
• 5:55
Speaker 4: high school students, and I just kind of let them lose,
• 5:58
Speaker 4: gave them my vision, told them, you know, kind of
• 6:00
Speaker 4: guided them. But in every room, because with such a
• 6:03
Speaker 4: small budget for that many rooms plus a lobby, plus
• 6:07
Speaker 4: the kitchen plus everything, I really focused on colors, shapes, textures,
• 6:14
Speaker 4: you know, and I would paint paintings on the walls,
• 6:17
Speaker 4: but they would all have a texture to them, or
• 6:18
Speaker 4: the grass would have really you know, fill up the grass,
• 6:21
Speaker 4: or and I wanted it to be very I guess
• 6:25
Speaker 4: where they could interact and fill at home and still
• 6:28
Speaker 4: be entertained, and then still try to hit every level
• 6:32
Speaker 4: of type of blindness so that each girl could experience
• 6:35
Speaker 4: something while they were in the room and in the
• 6:37
Speaker 4: hall and on the lobby. And so honestly, that's kind
• 6:40
Speaker 4: of where it started, was I started designing for blind people.
• 6:44
Speaker 1: I think that this honestly, like because because we're talking
• 6:48
Speaker 1: obviously we're talking about this to some of the young women,
• 6:52
Speaker 1: and also too, we talked to another interior designer who's wonderful,
• 6:55
Speaker 1: but what you're describing, right, now to me is so interesting.
• 7:00
Speaker 4: It is interesting, isn't it.
• 7:02
Speaker 3: That it is the most that is just so beautiful?
• 7:05
Speaker 4: Oh well, thank you.
• 7:06
Speaker 1: That kind of work to me feels it's all important.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: And you know, you want young girls to feel great
• 7:12
Speaker 1: about where they are and where they're living, where they.
• 7:15
Speaker 3: Put their head down.
• 7:16
Speaker 1: But that is that's an amazing story.
• 7:18
Speaker 2: It truly is. And you know the fact that they
• 7:20
Speaker 2: are leaving their homes and they have such a challenge
• 7:23
Speaker 2: because they're blind, and that they come into a space
• 7:26
Speaker 2: that feels like home or makes them feel happy to
• 7:29
Speaker 2: enter it, that like just made my day, Like I
• 7:32
Speaker 2: want to cry for them.
• 7:33
Speaker 4: Okay, well, thank you, I'm crying tearing up, Yeah, tearing
• 7:36
Speaker 4: up thinking about it. Because then they did a perception
• 7:38
Speaker 4: to thank me. And then some of the donors that
• 7:40
Speaker 4: I was able to get and so y'all, they cooked
• 7:42
Speaker 4: and they made cookies and they gave tours to all
• 7:45
Speaker 4: of the donors and with their little walking sticks and
• 7:48
Speaker 4: showed them what their favorite parts were. And it really
• 7:51
Speaker 4: was you know, I think it was one of the
• 7:53
Speaker 4: best times of my life as well. You know, who
• 7:56
Speaker 4: knew that Canton fleame market when I didn't sell one
• 7:58
Speaker 4: thing what all it would you know, what it would
• 8:00
  Speaker 4: turn into?
• 8:01
Speaker 3: Yea, yeah, that was in fifteen.
• 8:05
Speaker 4: It was twenty fifteen. Okay, cool.
• 8:07
Speaker 1: So how was it like evolved from them because or
• 8:10
  Speaker 1: from then?
• 8:10
Speaker 3: Because now you're still doing dorm rooms, right.
• 8:13
Speaker 4: Right, I'm still doing dorm rooms, and y'all there's have
• 8:15
Speaker 4: held up. I went and visited not too long ago,
• 8:18
Speaker 4: and I was shocked to see how well that it was,
• 8:21
Speaker 4: that it held up. And so you know, and nothing
• 8:24
Speaker 4: is really like out of season or or enough that
• 8:29
Speaker 4: you know, trends come and go, but the way we
• 8:32
Speaker 4: did it was just it was magical. It was colorful,
• 8:35
Speaker 4: it was bright, it was cheery. And I felt so
• 8:38
Speaker 4: sorry because these girls, you know, some of them had
• 8:40
Speaker 4: to stay through the weekend. Some of them would get
• 8:42
Speaker 4: get to go home on the weekends. So I had
• 8:45
Speaker 4: like all of the bedding, you know, I had donations
• 8:49
Speaker 4: so I could do new bedding, new bedtoppers, the phone pads,
• 8:52
Speaker 4: the you know, the new pillows, just anything that could
• 8:55
Speaker 4: make it very comfortable for them, just because I don't
• 8:58
Speaker 4: ever as a mom, being homesick is the worst the
• 9:01
Speaker 4: one I think a child can have, and a lot
• 9:04
Speaker 4: of you know, my husband says, I don't understand that
• 9:06
Speaker 4: homesick feeling y'all keep talking about, and I'm like, maybe
• 9:08
  Speaker 4: it's a girl thing. I don't know, but I never
• 9:11
Speaker 4: want a child to feel homesick and where they can't
• 9:13
Speaker 4: get home or see their parents or their or their mom.
• 9:16
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 9:17
Speaker 1: I think that's beautiful all of that, and I just
• 9:19
Speaker 1: I do want to touch on sort of quickly now
• 9:22
Speaker 1: because I don't want to run out of time. But
• 9:24
Speaker 1: you designed the We have pictures of the most beautiful
• 9:27
Speaker 1: dorm room that you designed. It is again, we had
• 9:30
Speaker 1: another designer on here. Hers was fabulous and they were
• 9:32
Speaker 1: really bold colors. This is a sort of very feminine girl.
• 9:37
  Speaker 1: I'm looking at.
• 9:38
Speaker 3: It, I feel like Mazie gets will be right up
• 9:40
  Speaker 3: your alley.
• 9:41
  Speaker 4: Thank you.
• 9:57
Speaker 2: You know what strikes me the most about this that
• 9:59
Speaker 2: it looks, first of all, nothing like a dorm room,
• 10:01
Speaker 2: and it doesn't look like a place you could ever
• 10:03
Speaker 2: actually study because I feel like their their desks are
• 10:07
Speaker 2: now these beautiful vanities. So your girls are gonna have
• 10:10
Speaker 2: to go to the library because you have no place
• 10:11
Speaker 2: to study here, which I mean, I think the trade
• 10:13
Speaker 2: off was just fine me too.
• 10:15
Speaker 4: Well, thank you. It's crazy because a lot. You know,
• 10:18
Speaker 4: I never studied at a desk. I always studied, you know,
• 10:21
Speaker 4: on my bed or with a pillow. You know. My
• 10:23
Speaker 4: mom's like, Okay, your bed's not the best place to study,
• 10:26
Speaker 4: but you know, that's just always where I I did it.
• 10:27
Speaker 4: And it was crazy because I was the type personality
• 10:30
Speaker 4: where I could not study unless my room was completely clean,
• 10:33
Speaker 4: and then I could study. But it was so funny
• 10:36
Speaker 4: because the girls that I did this dorm room for
• 10:38
Speaker 4: were the same way, Like, you know, I see a
• 10:41
Speaker 4: lot of comments, Oh, I can't wait to see this
• 10:42
Speaker 4: dorm in two months or three months, And I was like,
• 10:45
Speaker 4: I've guarantee with these girls it's gonna be the same.
• 10:47
Speaker 4: They were vacuum before I even left.
• 10:48
Speaker 3: Again, Oh oh my god.
• 10:50
Speaker 1: If I hadn't wait for my dorm room to be
• 10:52
Speaker 1: clean to study, I would have failed right out.
• 10:56
Speaker 3: Thank you for coming and have.
• 11:00
Speaker 4: Them is a she's an ol Miss cheerleader, and so
• 11:03
Speaker 4: we were laughing that we're gonna we're gonna put a
• 11:05
Speaker 4: little tiny trampling in the middle of the bed so
• 11:07
Speaker 4: she could just jump on in that bed when she
• 11:08
Speaker 4: could be The beds are so called their four stories.
• 11:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, they're so high.
• 11:13
Speaker 4: I mean there's so much underneath those beds that you know,
• 11:15
Speaker 4: just for maximum storage and the dressers and everything. But yeah,
• 11:19
Speaker 4: we joked with her that we were gonna put her
• 11:21
Speaker 4: little mini trampoline in the middle. I was like, well,
• 11:23
Speaker 4: that might be kind of fun for next year you
• 11:24
Speaker 4: get exercise and jump on in that bed.
• 11:26
Speaker 2: What is your favorite place to source this kind of stuff? So,
• 11:29
Speaker 2: like people are listening to this that are getting ready
• 11:31
Speaker 2: to move their kids into college, like, where do you
• 11:33
Speaker 2: go to find this great stuff that is kind of
• 11:35
  Speaker 2: dorm sized?
• 11:36
Speaker 4: So I will tell you I'm a huge fan and
• 11:39
Speaker 4: I've been using spoon Flower forever because they run fabulous
• 11:44
Speaker 4: sales in the summer. So I always tell my people
• 11:46
Speaker 4: to wait until the Memorial Day sales Labor Day sales,
• 11:49
Speaker 4: and then you get the sale price plus the new
• 11:52
Speaker 4: entering your email sale. But spoon Flower does it where
• 11:55
Speaker 4: you can do coordinating wallpaper, fabrics, shower curtains, you name it.
• 12:01
Speaker 4: The same pattern can be done in pillow cases, throw pillows,
• 12:06
Speaker 4: so you are it is so user friendly and you're
• 12:08
Speaker 4: able to click on this pillow and pull it with
• 12:11
Speaker 4: this fabric, and pull it with this fabric and even
• 12:13
Speaker 4: if you aren't good at that, anybody can do it,
• 12:16
Speaker 4: and anybody can say I click on this pillow to
• 12:19
Speaker 4: match this and this. It is very user friendly.
• 12:21
Speaker 3: You like it more than dorma fat I do.
• 12:23
Speaker 4: But Spoonflower gives you such a range that no matter
• 12:28
Speaker 4: what your personality is, you can find a fabric that
• 12:31
Speaker 4: suits your personality. I found that a lot of girls.
• 12:34
Speaker 4: It's hard when you are when you are trying to
• 12:37
Speaker 4: please two moms, two daughters. Yeah, two budgets, and with
• 12:42
Speaker 4: this corner room this I had a corner room this
• 12:44
Speaker 4: past year was three girls, three moms, and it's just
• 12:47
Speaker 4: you know, you got different budgets, different taste, different everything.
• 12:50
Speaker 4: So with Spoonflower, I was able to pull like, Okay,
• 12:53
Speaker 4: you like this fa you like zebras, you like flowers.
• 12:57
Speaker 4: I can coordinate it on this one site and then
• 13:00
Speaker 4: get a throat pill level and make it happen for
• 13:01
Speaker 4: both of you, and it just kind of pleases everybody. Amazon,
• 13:04
Speaker 4: of course is great. Wayfair is great, you know for
• 13:07
Speaker 4: price points, because you know we go to used all
• 13:12
Speaker 4: these used dorm sites at the end of the year
• 13:13
Speaker 4: all the time and buy everything used, we repaint it.
• 13:16
Speaker 4: I'll add some molding to it. I'll, you know, hot
• 13:19
Speaker 4: glue something to it, or hot glue some wallpaper. You know,
• 13:21
Speaker 4: we'll we'll do it, and trying to change it up
• 13:23
Speaker 4: and make it their own. But you know, I've even
• 13:26
Speaker 4: gotten to wear this spoon flower piling stick wallpaper because
• 13:29
Speaker 4: wallpaper is a huge topic owned and so what we
• 13:32
Speaker 4: were doing. What I did a couple of years back
• 13:34
Speaker 4: was actually about three years back, was I had noticed
• 13:37
Speaker 4: nobody was using wallpaper and dorms. Well, I had this
• 13:40
Speaker 4: really cute mirror I wanted to use my daughter's room.
• 13:42
Speaker 4: I said, well, the mirror is not gonna look good
• 13:43
Speaker 4: against that wall. I was like, I'm going to wallpaper. Well,
• 13:46
Speaker 4: at that time, pilling stick wasn't you know, really trending
• 13:49
Speaker 4: or wasn't that you know, it's like it is now.
• 13:51
Speaker 4: So I put it. I went to Lows and I
• 13:53
Speaker 4: got phone boards and I wallpaper phone board panels from Lows,
• 13:58
Speaker 4: and then I popped them up in her dorm and all,
• 14:00
Speaker 4: I mean, it took off like crazy. So what was
• 14:03
Speaker 4: a huge honor because everybody the next year was was
• 14:06
  Speaker 4: doing that.
• 14:07
Speaker 3: Well, did you want a man? Are you selling it?
• 14:09
  Speaker 3: You should be?
• 14:10
Speaker 4: That's what somebody reached out to me. She was like,
• 14:12
Speaker 4: you totally need to do this. So I clum. I
• 14:15
Speaker 4: was on the dorm Rooms. There's a website who is
• 14:18
Speaker 4: so invaluable to anybody moving in a dorm and it's
• 14:20
Speaker 4: the Dorm Rooms of Mississippi and beyond, and it is
• 14:24
Speaker 4: a wealth wealth of information. Mess ups do this, don't
• 14:30
Speaker 4: do this, this work, This didn't work, and it's just
• 14:32
Speaker 4: moms and designers just own their collaborating and talking and
• 14:36
Speaker 4: so but I remember them reaching out to me saying, Okay,
• 14:40
Speaker 4: this is gone viral. We can keep our inbox. How
• 14:43
Speaker 4: did you do the walk proper panels? And I was like, well,
• 14:46
Speaker 4: you know, you just got a load, so I did
• 14:49
Speaker 4: need to do it tutorial. But that does help a lot,
• 14:51
Speaker 4: when you know, for the schools that don't allow it,
• 14:54
Speaker 4: because there are a lot of schools that don't. I mean,
• 14:55
Speaker 4: this is sec we I think I don't know where
• 14:58
Speaker 4: I do for the top.
• 15:02
Speaker 2: You have to pat that, Yeah, you really really don't.
• 15:05
Speaker 3: You have to patn that. What are you doing?
• 15:07
Speaker 4: I can barely get on my zoom call.
• 15:09
  Speaker 3: I don't even know enough.
• 15:10
  Speaker 1: I know.
• 15:12
Speaker 2: Okay, I have two questions for you. Okay, First of all,
• 15:15
Speaker 2: like I could see they're being a huge demand for
• 15:18
Speaker 2: people wanting to use you. So how long does it
• 15:20
Speaker 2: take you to kind of bring one dorm together room together,
• 15:24
Speaker 2: assuming like there's two girls in it, And how many
• 15:27
Speaker 2: projects can you take on, like over a summer to
• 15:31
Speaker 2: get kids ready to move in the fall.
• 15:33
Speaker 4: So realistically, that's the issue because we've had such a
• 15:36
Speaker 4: I've had so many people this year already trying to
• 15:40
Speaker 4: reserve me for twenty twenty seven, which is huge. I'm excited,
• 15:44
Speaker 4: don't give me. I'm so excited. Good for you, realistically,
• 15:47
Speaker 4: but I want to make sure I can do them
• 15:49
Speaker 4: all and do them You do there? Yeah, so and
• 15:51
Speaker 4: so that's that's kind of the catch twenty two. It's
• 15:54
Speaker 4: it's interesting because there are always hiccups you have when
• 15:57
Speaker 4: you have your roommate. You get your roommate, you start
• 15:59
Speaker 4: thinking that they reach out to us, they reserve a designer,
• 16:02
Speaker 4: and then you start talking about their color scheme. You
• 16:05
Speaker 4: can't do anything other than that really until you find
• 16:08
Speaker 4: out exactly what dorm room you will be in, because
• 16:11
Speaker 4: all of the dorm rooms are different, and so to
• 16:13
Speaker 4: buy something that doesn't fit, that may not fit your space,
• 16:16
Speaker 4: or what dorm you might get is you can't do
• 16:19
Speaker 4: that until almost a couple of months till May. Actually,
• 16:22
Speaker 4: so you really only have a couple of months to
• 16:24
Speaker 4: buy your furniture, you know, and get all of that.
• 16:28
Speaker 4: I guess situated knowing what dorm room. But see even
• 16:31
Speaker 4: your dorm rooms. Even though you have the plans, Okay,
• 16:34
Speaker 4: I'm in dorm room eight seventeen, these are our plans,
• 16:37
Speaker 4: they're still all very different. You're gonna have an outlet here,
• 16:40
  Speaker 4: you're gonna have there's always unexpected. You're gonna have a
• 16:43
Speaker 4: jut out that's on the plan. So you have to
• 16:45
Speaker 4: be prepared to be ready for all of those hiccups
• 16:48
Speaker 4: because because no matter what dorm room you get in,
• 16:50
Speaker 4: you're gonna have a hiccup and you're gonna have some
• 16:52
Speaker 4: huge chickups, you know. So I'm gonna say they start planning.
• 16:56
Speaker 4: But then the other thing is I've had a lot
• 16:58
Speaker 4: of people. I've had four people this year reached out
• 17:00
Speaker 4: to me, I'm heading to Oxford again tomorrow. Because one
• 17:04
Speaker 4: girl lost her roommate very last minute, like two weeks
• 17:07
Speaker 4: before moving. They put her in a different dorm room.
• 17:10
Speaker 4: She had bought everything for a certain dorm room if
• 17:12
Speaker 4: nothing fits, she had to move to a different dorm room.
• 17:15
Speaker 4: I'm heading there tomorrow to try to make her dorm
• 17:17
Speaker 4: room work with everything that they've already purchased with the
• 17:20
Speaker 4: other roommate who is now at another school last minute.
• 17:23
  Speaker 4: So it's a lot of problems solving, and there's a
• 17:27
Speaker 4: lot of things that are going to change up last minute.
• 17:29
Speaker 4: Like my daughter's roommate did the same thing to her,
• 17:31
Speaker 4: and she found on Instagram that her daughter that her
• 17:33
Speaker 4: roommate wasn't going to move in with her a month
• 17:36
Speaker 4: before move in. So you know, you have all that gut.
• 17:40
Speaker 4: That gut kind of goes on too that you know,
• 17:42
Speaker 4: it's a lot of problems solving, but they do start
• 17:45
Speaker 4: like they've already started now for next year. Wow, okay,
• 17:49
  Speaker 4: the plan ahead.
• 17:50
  Speaker 1: Wow?
• 17:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, at least where do our listeners find you? Oh?
• 17:54
Speaker 4: Okay, So I might as well have my Space And
• 17:57
Speaker 4: I don't know if y'all remember my Space, So okay, remember,
• 18:00
Speaker 4: might as well have that. I have Facebook and Instagram
• 18:03
Speaker 4: and we are trying to get on TikTok and so
• 18:06
  Speaker 4: we're experiencing learning curves. But it's Lisa Dice d y
• 18:10
  Speaker 4: E s s So I'm on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
• 18:13
Speaker 3: Great. Thank you so much for joining USA.
• 18:17
Speaker 4: Thank you so much. I'm so excited.
• 18:19
Speaker 2: I love your story. Thank you for sharing your story.
• 18:21
Speaker 3: It's amazing. Thank thank you guys.
• 18:23
Speaker 4: I appreciate you. Okay, bye bye.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: So funny enough, my best friend moved her freshman daughter
• 18:44
Speaker 1: in like four days ago or something to Duke and
• 18:50
Speaker 1: very very different experience. So yeah, we went to be
• 18:56
Speaker 1: you together before I transfer. But I met Sharie and
• 18:59
Speaker 1: Call and neither one of us had experienced anything. But
• 19:04
Speaker 1: like Joan, you know, it was like what a different time.
• 19:07
Speaker 1: But she was describing it to me. First of all,
• 19:10
Speaker 1: she said it was maybe the hottest day she'd ever
• 19:13
Speaker 1: experienced in her you know, fifty eight years. It was
• 19:18
Speaker 1: just awful. And they picked from a lottery. So she
• 19:21
Speaker 1: had like the last two hours. You know, you can't
• 19:25
Speaker 1: come in until you are your time is allotted, and
• 19:29
Speaker 1: they had to be somewhere after that two hours, so
• 19:31
Speaker 1: she had two hours. There was no interior designer coming
• 19:35
Speaker 1: in to transform the dorm room and it was four
• 19:39
  Speaker 1: flights up.
• 19:41
Speaker 4: Of course, yeah, on that hot day.
• 19:44
Speaker 1: Right, So there's like different kinds of dorms that you
• 19:47
Speaker 1: are either lucky enough or unlucky enough to get to
• 19:50
Speaker 1: get the nicest, newest one. Sometimes you get the oldest,
• 19:53
Speaker 1: crappiest one. So she didn't get the nicest newest. So
• 19:59
Speaker 1: it was two hours just trying to figure out where
• 20:02
Speaker 1: to put her clothes. And she said she had bought
• 20:06
Speaker 1: knowing that it was you know, a dorm room, and
• 20:08
Speaker 1: that was off on a problem. She bought these plastic
• 20:10
Speaker 1: drawers to put together, and but she had to leave.
• 20:14
Speaker 1: Poor Jolie. She said they had to leave to go
• 20:16
Speaker 1: to an orientation and it was really they encourage you
• 20:20
Speaker 1: do not to like let your kid go. There's a
• 20:22
Speaker 1: whole ceremony and don't come back kind of thing, and
• 20:26
Speaker 1: so in a good way. But anyway, but she you know,
• 20:30
Speaker 1: left her with boxes and there was no you know,
• 20:36
Speaker 1: wallpapering the walls, and you know, I think she has
• 20:41
Speaker 1: apparently got a really nice roommate. But they decided they
• 20:43
Speaker 1: didn't want to necessarily coordinate. So just a completely different
• 20:48
Speaker 1: experience and a difficult one. I mean, I would think
• 20:52
Speaker 1: if I was having an interior designer come in and
• 20:55
Speaker 1: do my dorm room, it would be a very cheery
• 21:00
Speaker 1: I experience as opposed to and especially as a parent,
• 21:02
Speaker 1: right like to be able her in that responsibility over
• 21:05
Speaker 1: I did not enjoy decorating my daughter's dorm room. My
• 21:10
Speaker 1: son's I told you. He really didn't let me do much.
• 21:12
Speaker 1: He had a whole begin for later.
• 21:14
Speaker 2: Mom, I got college girls to.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: Meet yep, but uh yeah, it wasn't like that.
• 21:21
Speaker 2: And we're both moms. So we moved our kids into
• 21:24
Speaker 2: dorm rooms and like that. Leaving that first day is
• 21:28
Speaker 2: really hard, all right, Yeah, And it's kind of comforting
• 21:32
Speaker 2: when you know you left them, Like the bed is made,
• 21:34
Speaker 2: it looks really pretty, and you have everything, you bought
• 21:36
Speaker 2: all their books for them, you have it all set
• 21:38
Speaker 2: up on their desk, like the small things that we did,
• 21:41
  Speaker 2: because that's only that's the I mean, I'm older than
• 21:42
Speaker 2: you know, I'm sixty three, so like this is even
• 21:45
Speaker 2: farther back. But like those things made you feel good.
• 21:49
Speaker 2: I feel really bad for your friend because I bet
• 21:52
Speaker 2: she felt very unsettled leaving her daughter in that room
• 21:55
Speaker 2: that was sounds like it was still a little bit
• 21:56
Speaker 2: in shambles. And I wonder did she talk about any
• 21:59
Speaker 2: of the other rooms that she walked by, rooms that
• 22:01
Speaker 2: were over the top decorated and did she.
• 22:03
Speaker 1: Feel I don't think she had time to do that
• 22:05
Speaker 1: because they were on such time crunch, and so it
• 22:10
Speaker 1: was I don't think that she. I mean the room
• 22:14
Speaker 1: had like the air conditioner that was sitting in the window,
• 22:15
Speaker 1: which she said, you know, thankfully worked. When she moved
• 22:19
Speaker 1: my niece in to watch you the air there was
• 22:22
Speaker 1: no air conditioning. This is going back that.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: I had no easy Okay, there you go.
• 22:27
Speaker 2: I went to be your person, Maryland. It's hot here,
• 22:29
Speaker 2: it is hot, so but yeah, it was hard. I
• 22:33
Speaker 2: wonder if Duke is doing that on purpose. So it
• 22:35
Speaker 2: sounds like they all had like two hour time slots
• 22:37
Speaker 2: that were really short and they they maybe they're doing
• 22:41
Speaker 2: that on purpose because they don't want these over the
• 22:43
Speaker 2: top dorm rooms. They want everybody to feel like the
• 22:45
Speaker 2: person down the hall doesn't have a nicer space than
• 22:48
Speaker 2: they do, like that everybody's more equal.
• 22:51
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 22:51
Speaker 1: The only reason I don't think so is because I think,
• 22:53
Speaker 1: let's say you get the morning slot, you don't get
• 22:56
Speaker 1: kicked out nor so then you have the day, you
• 22:59
Speaker 1: have the whole right and what I it's not it's
• 23:03
Speaker 1: not necessarily it, but you know, I don't know The
• 23:07
Speaker 1: only thing I could think is you're very busy at Duke.
• 23:09
Speaker 1: It's a hard school. Yeah, sure, so you know, maybe
• 23:13
  Speaker 1: you're in the library. I don't know, but I only
• 23:15
  Speaker 1: know Sherry's experience. I don't know if you have a
• 23:17
Speaker 1: couple of mothers with kids that went to Duke. Yeah,
• 23:19
Speaker 1: I don't know any mothers. And like you, I have
• 23:22
Speaker 1: lots of friends that have moved their kids into college,
• 23:26
Speaker 1: and I definitely everybody posts the rooms and talk about
• 23:31
Speaker 1: it with their kids and what colors and what does
• 23:33
Speaker 1: your roommate think and all that, But I don't know
• 23:38
Speaker 1: anyone that's done it to this extent.
• 23:41
Speaker 2: No, No, these ones were over the top. Yeah, and
• 23:43
Speaker 2: I think that's why they're on the show.
• 23:44
  Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
• 23:45
Speaker 1: The first one that Riley did by herself look like
• 23:50
Speaker 1: she had a designer there, right.
• 23:52
  Speaker 2: I mean she's artistic, she's good.
• 23:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, God bless her, you know.
• 23:56
Speaker 1: I mean, if that's that is, I can look at
• 24:00
Speaker 1: that and I think, well, fabulous.
• 24:02
  Speaker 3: I don't know, and I feel I feel little bad
• 24:04
  Speaker 3: because I don't want to.
• 24:05
Speaker 1: I don't I'm not trying to insult these wonderful women,
• 24:07
Speaker 1: these wonderful talented women and what.
• 24:09
Speaker 2: They Yeah, incredibly is Yeah, it's beautiful. Yeah, I mean,
• 24:13
Speaker 2: and it's the you know, family's choices and their interior designers.
• 24:16
Speaker 2: That's what they do for a women, they're being hired.
• 24:18
Speaker 2: So they did a great job. I think that maybe
• 24:20
Speaker 2: we're questioning, like this whole thought that this over the
• 24:24
Speaker 2: top dorm experience now is taking away maybe from other people.
• 24:28
  Speaker 1: Also it's a lesson that I don't know. I don't
• 24:32
Speaker 1: know I sound so judgy, but I don't mean to.
• 24:35
Speaker 1: But it's just when she said, you know, it's an
• 24:37
Speaker 1: extension of home, I don't know that I want college
• 24:40
Speaker 1: to feel or wanted it to feel like necessarily an
• 24:43
  Speaker 1: extension of home.
• 24:44
Speaker 3: I mean, I agree with you.
• 24:45
Speaker 1: I think it's okay to miss to be homesick. Both
• 24:47
Speaker 1: my kids were. I think it's you know, it's you
• 24:51
Speaker 1: grow from it. And it's a lot, a lot of
• 24:55
Speaker 1: money for one year, just a lot of it that
• 24:59
  Speaker 1: I don't I wouldn't necessarily subscribe to.
• 25:02
  Speaker 3: But again.
• 25:04
Speaker 1: It's that maybe's judge and these women did incredible jobs,
• 25:08
Speaker 1: So you guys. Lisa shared her information how to find
• 25:10
Speaker 1: her Amy Joy's Designs. I'm sure you can find her
• 25:13
Speaker 1: on Instagram. Joycee or TikTok or wherever.
• 25:18
Speaker 3: She has a lovely website. I looked at it before
• 25:20
Speaker 3: we started this. She's very talented.
• 25:22
Speaker 2: You should see the home she does so, I mean,
• 25:24
Speaker 2: dorm room is, like I think she said, it is
• 25:25
Speaker 2: very small part of her business. You should check out
• 25:28
Speaker 2: her website. It's pretty incredible, it really is. I have
• 25:30
Speaker 2: to say though, for Riley, the one that did her
• 25:32
Speaker 2: own dorm room, I like that she sourced things. She
• 25:36
Speaker 2: worked hard to not spend a lot of money. You know,
• 25:38
Speaker 2: she wasn't an interior designer doing this. She did this
• 25:40
Speaker 2: on her own and I think that actually that was
• 25:43
Speaker 2: kind of a good lesson. I think she maybe learned
• 25:45
Speaker 2: something from this experience.
• 25:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I do too. Very talented young lady. Yeah.
• 25:51
