Transcript

- 0:14Speaker 1: million dollar contract. The first thing that comes to everybody's
- 0:17Speaker 1: mind is what does this mean? Freedwin Diaz, we will

- 0:38Speaker 1: Devin Williams James signed with the Mets three years fifty
- 0:41Speaker 1: What are you thinking.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Instant reaction in terms of the player.
- 0:44Speaker 4: I think I definitely like the player more than maybe
- 0:47Speaker 4: what his public perception is right now.
- 0:49Speaker 3: The ra was high as a Yankee. It was kind
- 0:51Speaker 3: of a disaster season.
- 0:52Speaker 4: He allowed to earn run I have it here, I
- 0:53Speaker 4: wrote it down here, allowed her to run in five
- 0:55Speaker 4: of us for his fourteen appearances of the Yankees last year.
- 0:57Speaker 4: I think that put them kind of on a that
- 1:00Speaker 4: which sloped from the beginning, but still a really good pitcher,
- 1:02Speaker 4: still striking guys out.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Then the years and the money caught me very off
- 1:06Speaker 3: guard here.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah, the years were shocking.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I was truly surprised that Devin Williams won took a
- 1:11Speaker 1: three year deal. But then when you see the money,
- 1:13Speaker 1: you're like, oh, okay, I mean, I guess he kind
- 1:15Speaker 1: of had to. Like Devin Williams coming off of the
- 1:17Speaker 1: season that he had. While I think under the hood
- 1:19Speaker 1: looked a lot better than what the r numbers, like
- 1:21Speaker 1: you said, were three years fifty million, you can't say
- 1:24Speaker 1: no to that if you're Devin Williams, no matter who's
- 1:26Speaker 1: coming for you.
- 1:26Speaker 2: He would have played for the Colorado Rockies at three
- 1:28Speaker 2: for fifty.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Definitely not And that's what does make me feel weirried
- 1:31Speaker 4: about this trade, despite again liking the signing. What yeah, well,
- 1:35Speaker 4: I'll talk more about the players we get through here,
- 1:37Speaker 4: but the contract seems like a big commitment to a
- 1:40Speaker 4: guy that at at worst is not a good closer,
- 1:44Speaker 4: and at best you know there's going to be some
- 1:47Speaker 4: erradicalness in production just based on the player archy type here.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I mean.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Shout out Diana the Queen of Mets Twitter. She put
- 1:52Speaker 1: out a funny tweet that I book marked already. She
- 1:54Speaker 1: was like Devin Williams and the David Stearns Run Organization
- 1:57Speaker 1: one point eight ninet era David Stearns A non David
- 2:01Speaker 1: Devin Williams and non David Stearns Run Organization three point
- 2:03Speaker 1: four eight. This list address real quick the Edwin Das stuff.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Everyone around the league, all the reporters, all the people
- 2:10Speaker 1: that are in the know, are saying this has no impact,
- 2:12Speaker 1: does not change anything with the Mets still being very
- 2:15Speaker 1: interested in Edwin Diaz. And I think we have to
- 2:17Speaker 1: say that quickly because I think the immediate reaction that
- 2:19Speaker 1: anybody and I will say it makes sense, would have
- 2:23Speaker 1: is what does this mean for Edwin Diaz? But I
- 2:25Speaker 1: like the idea that if we don't get Edwin, which
- 2:28Speaker 1: of course is a possibility, I still don't think we
- 2:30Speaker 1: will miss out on him. We do still have what
- 2:33Speaker 1: was a dynamite closer his entire career, except for when
- 2:35Speaker 1: he was with the Yankees.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yes, exactly, But I do feel better about Devin Williams
- 2:40Speaker 4: as the two with Edmund as the one.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no, I can't tell you. I'll be happy
- 2:46Speaker 2: going Edwin DS and Devin Williams like.
- 2:48Speaker 1: That, it's very much of what's been seems like all
- 2:51Speaker 1: the David Sturtons moves so far this offseason, where it's like, well,
- 2:54Speaker 1: if this is the only move, I don't feel great.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I want to see what happens next, because if Devin
- 2:59Speaker 1: Williams is our close are going into opening Day, I'm
- 3:02Speaker 1: not gonna lie to you guys and say I feel
- 3:03Speaker 1: good about it. Like, while I think the under the
- 3:05Speaker 1: hood stuff is great, and he still strikes out a
- 3:07Speaker 1: ton of guys, and it seems like last.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Year was just a weird season with the Yankees.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And I'm gonna try and find the Petriello stat about
- 3:12Speaker 1: how when Devin Williams left the game, basically the Yankees
- 3:15Speaker 1: relievers couldn't stop anybody from scoring. Yeah, and he killed
- 3:17Speaker 1: all the inherited runners when he came into the game.
- 3:20Speaker 1: But I won't feel good about it if Devin Williams'
- 3:22Speaker 1: closer on April first. No, there's also last year Devin
- 3:26Speaker 1: Williams went from the Brewers to the Yankees. The Blue
- 3:28Speaker 1: was always the best infield defense in baseball, one of
- 3:30Speaker 1: the best. The Yankees usually either in the middle or
- 3:33Speaker 1: closer to the bottom, but you also hope that we
- 3:35Speaker 1: have the infield defense to help him next year. It's
- 3:37Speaker 1: just it was such a weird season for him the
- 3:40Speaker 1: way it started. That did make it look so ugly
- 3:42Speaker 1: at the end. But I think he's he's good. Like,
- 3:44Speaker 1: the strike up rate was thirty five percent, that's good.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Like the wift rate was still up the league best,
- 3:48Speaker 1: that's good. The ground ball rate was still good. The
- 3:50Speaker 1: quality of contact against him was still pretty good. Not
- 3:52Speaker 1: as good, was still quite good. Like it seems like,
- 3:55Speaker 1: no matter what, there's a better floor in Devin Williams than.
- 3:58Speaker 3: The guy that we saw last year.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I got the numbers.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So Williams inherited six runners when he entered the game
- 4:04Speaker 1: this season, he allowed zero to score.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I like hearing that. I think that's a good stat.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Williams left ten runners on when departing the next relievers
- 4:11Speaker 1: are allowed seven of them to score. So seventy percent
- 4:14Speaker 1: of the time when he left the game, the Yankees
- 4:15Speaker 1: relievers allowed him to score. One hundred percent of the time
- 4:17Speaker 1: when he came into the game with inherited runners, none
- 4:20Speaker 1: of them scored.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Okay, that's great, So again was a big deal. But
- 4:24Speaker 3: I just this is weird.
- 4:26Speaker 4: This is now only one of like twelve three year
- 4:28Speaker 4: reliever contracts in baseball, and a handful of those were
- 4:31Speaker 4: signed to guys who were pre arbitration like in terms
- 4:33Speaker 4: of aav I know that deferrals will kick in to
- 4:36Speaker 4: bring this down from fifteen million, probably a little bit lower,
- 4:38Speaker 4: but Josh Adam's nineteen year Tanner Scott eighteen r I SA
- 4:41Speaker 4: Glacier sixteen. It'd be Devin Williams right after that.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Yeah, the deferrals.
- 4:46Speaker 4: It's empty to add the idd As contract on top
- 4:48Speaker 4: of this with him saying is that it would still
- 4:50Speaker 4: I know it's being reported like that. I would still
- 4:52Speaker 4: be surprised if you put this much money into the
- 4:54Speaker 4: back of a bullpen.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yes and no.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And the reason I say this is because we know
- 4:58Speaker 1: that one of the issues right right now was for
- 5:00Speaker 1: the Mets. And I'm not gonna bring up the twenty
- 5:02Speaker 1: fourteen to fifteen Kansasity Royals.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Because I love doing it.
- 5:05Speaker 1: That's like that's modern baseball, like love it Chef's Kiss,
- 5:10Speaker 1: where it's like our starters are gonna be at their
- 5:12Speaker 1: best if we can get them to go six innings,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and then if we can lock down seven, eight to
- 5:16Speaker 1: nine which is a lot to say a lot to say.
- 5:18Speaker 1: That's a lot to say, but it works. It has
- 5:21Speaker 1: worked in the past, and I think with the options
- 5:24Speaker 1: that are available realistically pitching wise for the Mets, on
- 5:26Speaker 1: the starting rotation market, both free agency and trade wise,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I think this is the plan.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I really do.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I think that they're still gonna get Edwin Diaz, and
- 5:34Speaker 1: they're gonna be like eighth to ninth inning interchangeable. Those
- 5:37Speaker 1: guys can pitch out either moment it's gonna be shut down,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and then we just kind of got to get to
- 5:41Speaker 1: the seventh. If we can get to the seventh, we're
- 5:44Speaker 1: feeling good. Obviously it's easier than done. But over a season,
- 5:47Speaker 1: like you still love the idea that the final six
- 5:49Speaker 1: outs of the game are pretty locked up.
- 5:52Speaker 4: I came on here so ready to be so excited
- 5:53Speaker 4: about this signing and like kind of wax poetic. Poetic
- 5:56Speaker 4: can pontificate about all the reasons that Devin Williams like
- 5:58Speaker 4: better luck next year, but seeing that deal and seeing
- 6:01Speaker 4: the way that his relatives, the rest of relievers in
- 6:03Speaker 4: baseball that but the deferrals.
- 6:06Speaker 2: The deferrals are big though.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Okay, so deferrals still bring it down to twelve million
- 6:10Speaker 4: against the luxury tax a year maybe best case scenario.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I don't know exactly how those are going to work.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I don't know how those numbers work.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But like in terms of AAV, I'm just we're just
- 6:17Speaker 1: gonna talk about AV because we can't talk about luxury
- 6:19Speaker 1: tax right now. Taking fifteen million off over those three
- 6:23Speaker 1: years because of the deferrals, that's how much its gonna
- 6:25Speaker 1: be five million a year. That puts them right around
- 6:28Speaker 1: ten million dollars a year. Like that's what Lesson Tanner
- 6:30Speaker 1: Scott got. This doesn't take better than Tanner Scott. That's
- 6:33Speaker 1: like Leslan Kirbyate's got.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It's scary when you look at, you know, Robert Stevenson too.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Also the fact that Robert Stevenson also never had the
- 6:40Speaker 1: to say success Devin Williams had either, that's I think
- 6:43Speaker 1: that's it's it's hard when you see Devin Williams really
- 6:45Speaker 1: stinking up like he did with the Yankees, Like there's
- 6:47Speaker 1: no doubt that having not gonna spin you that A
- 6:49Speaker 1: four era was ever good for him by any means.
- 6:52Speaker 1: But he had the sustained success and was dominant before that,
- 6:56Speaker 1: Like disgustingly dominant, similar way where Edwin dis when he
- 6:59Speaker 1: came to the Mets, had the one horrendous season and
- 7:02Speaker 1: then has been quite literally the best reliever in baseball.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Since I am only talking about it in the context
- 7:07Speaker 4: of I'm still assuming my head when Diaz is not back.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Honestly, that's how I'm taking these back. That's how I feel.
- 7:13Speaker 3: AFT is.
- 7:13Speaker 4: If if I were to tell you a world maybe
- 7:15Speaker 4: you can get in my head space here. You know,
- 7:16Speaker 4: Edwin Diaz is not back.
- 7:17Speaker 3: What do you think of this?
- 7:19Speaker 1: Don't love it? That's I kind of said that at
- 7:21Speaker 1: the beginning. As I said, that's been Sterens' offseason is
- 7:24Speaker 1: He's made moves where I'm like, well, there's gotta be
- 7:27Speaker 1: more to this, right like this this can't be the move,
- 7:30Speaker 1: just like sime and trade couldn't be the move. Like
- 7:32Speaker 1: you're you're worst off trading Simeon for Nimo if that's
- 7:35Speaker 1: the only thing that you do. Simeon does not make
- 7:37Speaker 1: this team better than brand Nemo does. If you go
- 7:39Speaker 1: from Edwin das Devin Williams, the Mets are a worst team.
- 7:43Speaker 4: I just want to be more excited about this. I'm
- 7:45Speaker 4: sad I'm not letting myself get this. Well, listen, I'm
- 7:48Speaker 4: not excited. I'm not pretending like I'm excited.
- 7:51Speaker 3: You seem like you're excited.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I think it's just a different vibe right now of
- 7:54Speaker 1: where we're at in the night, where you know, I
- 7:56Speaker 1: might I just have a little more energy.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Maybe that.
- 7:58Speaker 4: But man like, if he's the closer, I just you
- 8:02Speaker 4: pay them kind of closer ish money. This is the
- 8:04Speaker 4: closes thing, the closer money that. But maybe especially with
- 8:07Speaker 4: that third year.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Maybe because Uncle Steve he got that casino today, maybe
- 8:10Speaker 1: he's like, we got all it, Hey on it, big brain,
- 8:13Speaker 1: Uncle Steve goes, I'm gonna own a casino next to
- 8:16Speaker 1: City Field, all the hotels, the casino property. I'm gonna
- 8:19Speaker 1: be making such boatloads of money. And we saw the
- 8:22Speaker 1: reports that came out about is networth now being close
- 8:24Speaker 1: to thirty billion dollars, which is double basically where it
- 8:28Speaker 1: was when he bought the Mets, which is absolutely insane
- 8:31Speaker 1: because the Mets still haven't done shit and his net
- 8:33Speaker 1: worth is doubled in terms of billions.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Maybe he was just like, go get Devin Williams.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It's our eighth and guy, we're gonna pay Edwin Das
- 8:39Speaker 1: to maybe he goes nuclear and he pulls kind of
- 8:41Speaker 1: a Dodger and said, we want our guys.
- 8:43Speaker 2: We're just gonna pay him. We're gonna pay the guys
- 8:44Speaker 2: that we want to hear. How many years do you
- 8:46Speaker 2: think Edwin Diaz going to get his contract?
- 8:48Speaker 3: Now?
- 8:49Speaker 2: Five?
- 8:49Speaker 3: You think he's going to get five? Five?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Five for the record was what five for one hundred, right,
- 8:53Speaker 1: that's what he originally signed and that was the record
- 8:55Speaker 1: five for.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Like one hundred two. Okay, so he'll probably go five.
- 8:58Speaker 1: He'll probably go five for one oh three, like just whatever,
- 9:00Speaker 1: whatever is the minimum to break it.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I think that's what's gonna happen.
- 9:03Speaker 3: My brain went there too when this happened. If like
- 9:05Speaker 3: for Devin Williams getting three, like Edward.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Has to get, Ryan Helsy just got too like I mean,
- 9:10Speaker 4: I think also with an opt out.
- 9:11Speaker 3: The surprising thing about the.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Devin Williams is the no opt out, because there is
- 9:14Speaker 4: a world where like you're saying, like it's definitely possible.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Here like Devin Williams reverts to being an easy top
- 9:19Speaker 4: five closing in baseball, Yes, you wouldn't be knocked one
- 9:22Speaker 4: hundred percent, very possible, probably better than fifty percent chance
- 9:24Speaker 4: of that happening. Now you're locking yourself into everything I'm
- 9:27Speaker 4: saying against. Now you're locking yourself into like eight million
- 9:29Speaker 4: lower av than you actually could get if you got
- 9:31Speaker 4: right back on the market. That's what makes this very
- 9:33Speaker 4: weird to me. It feels like both teams made the
- 9:35Speaker 4: really honest concession. Like usually deals like this, teams seem
- 9:38Speaker 4: to avoid more risk and like just throw the opt
- 9:40Speaker 4: out but give you more money. This is kind of like,
- 9:43Speaker 4: this is a huge bet on Devin Williams, this huge
- 9:45Speaker 4: bet that Devin warms and kind of a lack of
- 9:48Speaker 4: a lack of bet at Devin Williams on itself a
- 9:50Speaker 4: little bit.
- 9:51Speaker 5: KP. The website is Chubbyshorts dot com. The brand is Chubby's,
- 9:56Speaker 5: but it's not just shorts.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Yeah, don't be fooled the website's name. This is a
- 10:01Speaker 6: one stop shop for all things that I love, swimming trunks,
- 10:05Speaker 6: golf polos, and even flannels. It fits me perfectly. One
- 10:09Speaker 6: stop shop is the place to go.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Yes, sir KP. I've been wearing their flannel overshirt. It's
- 10:14Speaker 5: like my favorite flannel and your softest sweater having a
- 10:18Speaker 5: little baby. It's the best of both worlds classic flannel
- 10:20Speaker 5: look with the warmth of a fleece, and we know
- 10:23Speaker 5: it's that time of year to pull that off. The
- 10:25Speaker 5: Chubbies flannel overshirt. It feels like your favorite flannel but
- 10:29Speaker 5: with the warmth of a cozy sweater. And for a
- 10:31Speaker 5: limited time, Chubbies is giving our listeners twenty percent off
- 10:34Speaker 5: your purchase at Chubbies with the promo code Foul at checkout.
- 10:38Speaker 5: But if it's Black Friday, skip the code take advantage
- 10:41Speaker 5: of an even bigger markdown during their exclusive Black Friday sale.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Just head to chubbies shorts dot com and make sure
- 10:48Speaker 5: to support the show by telling them that Foul Territory
- 10:51Speaker 5: sent you.
- 10:52Speaker 1: It's also like a big player flag moment for David
- 10:54Speaker 1: Stearns possibly as well.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Kind of Yeah, this is one that if the two
- 10:59Speaker 4: ways this could go, could say a lot about what
- 11:01Speaker 4: happens the next few years, maybe with just the public
- 11:04Speaker 4: perception of David Sterns wherever it is right now.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I mean, we've been two of the biggest Sterns guys
- 11:08Speaker 1: and this is the first time we've truthfully.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Been like, what's going on here.
- 11:13Speaker 3: It's a funny end though, because again, like before coming on.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Just seeing an instant reaction see the update, I'm like, yes'
- 11:18Speaker 4: happy because I can't wait.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Talked about Devin Williams. Then seeing the money, it totally
- 11:22Speaker 3: shifted my entire perspective.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I mean, couldn't Devin Williams wait the years in the
- 11:26Speaker 1: money like be like I need the three years because
- 11:28Speaker 1: it takes you through the lockout too, like you just
- 11:29Speaker 1: don't want to think about it, and then you have
- 11:31Speaker 1: a clean year after the lockout.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Maybe I guess if we're already get into the lockout
- 11:34Speaker 4: though we can't.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I think these guys are.
- 11:37Speaker 2: For thinking about that, and front officers too.
- 11:39Speaker 4: We're all seeing like the reversal on that because we've
- 11:41Speaker 4: seen more guys take the qualifying offer than years past,
- 11:43Speaker 4: and possibly Devin Williams taking away some aav that gives
- 11:46Speaker 4: some extra years. This also seemed to me like the
- 11:48Speaker 4: Luis Everarno deal of I don't want to move out
- 11:51Speaker 4: of New York, but I don't have an offer out
- 11:52Speaker 4: there that I want good enough yet, which is why
- 11:54Speaker 4: I was like, nice, one year, two year opt out,
- 11:56Speaker 4: no risk, Let's have some fun. It's this is strange,
- 11:58Speaker 4: This is not a risk of move.
- 12:00Speaker 2: No this is this is risk move.
- 12:02Speaker 1: This is another guy that Stern's taken back from his
- 12:05Speaker 1: Milwaukee days as well.
- 12:07Speaker 2: The first one did not work out well.
- 12:09Speaker 4: It seemed weird because that's the way definitely was let
- 12:12Speaker 4: me walk in. Know David Stearns wasn't there at the time.
- 12:13Speaker 4: It was kind of like bye bye, steal lads.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Let the door hit you on the way out. We
- 12:17Speaker 2: could figure out the new version of you.
- 12:19Speaker 4: I mean, there's also going to be the narrative people
- 12:21Speaker 4: can be like, he can't pitch in New York, we
- 12:22Speaker 4: kept him in New York again, I don't think fair.
- 12:24Speaker 2: He is a bit of a head case. Devid Williams is.
- 12:27Speaker 4: He'd he barked at some umpires, but also he got
- 12:29Speaker 4: that from his manager last year.
- 12:30Speaker 2: That was kind of part of the Yankee way. Yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 2: I've heard things he's a head case off the field, So.
- 12:35Speaker 3: For sure he probably might he might be, definitely could be.
- 12:37Speaker 4: I guess Sterens knows him kind of well, yeah, definitely
- 12:39Speaker 4: doesn't better than us.
- 12:40Speaker 3: It's for the confidence right there.
- 12:42Speaker 4: The other big thing with Devin Williams that was very
- 12:44Speaker 4: weird is that just for some reason last year he
- 12:46Speaker 4: gave up a lot more singles on pitches outside the
- 12:48Speaker 4: strike zone.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Strange anomally that happened.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Hitter swung on pitches outside the strike zone a good
- 12:53Speaker 4: bit more than they did the previous year.
- 12:54Speaker 3: The whiff rate and those went down.
- 12:56Speaker 4: The batting average went up, but the slugging percentage, the
- 12:58Speaker 4: quality of contact and those didn't go.
- 13:00Speaker 3: So that's kind of something that.
- 13:01Speaker 2: We're alluding to before.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Just hit it, throwing the bat out there, trying to
- 13:04Speaker 4: get through the Yankee infield. It's just he I can't
- 13:07Speaker 4: gut over how weird of the season it was, and
- 13:08Speaker 4: I can't get over the fact that be guaranteed.
- 13:10Speaker 3: In three seasons.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe it just maybe it doesn't matter that much.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Maybe this is maybe this.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Is us being a little PTSD two of like old Mets, Yeah,
- 13:17Speaker 1: where it's like three years, like we're never gonna sign
- 13:20Speaker 1: another reliever.
- 13:21Speaker 2: But maybe it doesn't matter.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I mean, you see how important these guys can be
- 13:25Speaker 1: in the back end of the games. Maybe Edwin Diaz
- 13:28Speaker 1: asking for crazy maybe once one hundred and twenty million,
- 13:30Speaker 1: Like we don't know where he's actually going with all this.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Maybe this is just the insurance if for some reason
- 13:35Speaker 1: that when Diaz gets absolutely insane in.
- 13:37Speaker 2: His asking price.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I guess that's true.
- 13:39Speaker 4: So we just became the third team in baseball to
- 13:42Speaker 4: have two relievers in our bullpen, even without it. When
- 13:44Speaker 4: Diaz signed to at least two to each of them
- 13:46Speaker 4: signed a ten million dollars AAV contract. Try and name
- 13:50Speaker 4: the other teams, Dodgers. Dodgers are one of them. Any
- 13:53Speaker 4: one of these teams shows up here in the contracts.
- 13:56Speaker 4: But one of the guys originally was signed as a
- 13:57Speaker 4: starting pitchers. I'm not counting him.
- 13:59Speaker 2: In this, Okay, Dodgers. How many teams are there?
- 14:02Speaker 3: There's one more?
- 14:03Speaker 1: Is it going to be the Boston Red Sows?
- 14:07Speaker 4: They were the team that was the technicality because they've hicks,
- 14:09Speaker 4: But I'm not Countingham's for these fair.
- 14:11Speaker 1: What and then so there's still one more team? One
- 14:14Speaker 1: more team Alanta Braves, No Toronto Blue Jays, No?
- 14:19Speaker 2: Oh, is it? Is it the Orioles.
- 14:23Speaker 4: It's the Baltimore Orioles. Just kick just got them both,
- 14:25Speaker 4: Ryan Helsey Andrew Kittridge. So this is this is strange.
- 14:29Speaker 4: We have three of them, will be the only team
- 14:30Speaker 4: to have that.
- 14:32Speaker 1: We're We're the only team that's where it got an
- 14:34Speaker 1: owner who's got thirty billion dollars.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Hopefully that's the case. Maybe just spend just absolutely spent
- 14:38Speaker 4: out of our assets. Maybe this, if this is the
- 14:40Speaker 4: sign for that, that's great. If this is going to
- 14:42Speaker 4: be the only big bullpen acquisition, I'll feel a little
- 14:45Speaker 4: bit uneasy despite liking Devin Wood.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Okay, now to just really give you some crazy hypotheticals. Here,
- 14:51Speaker 1: Edwin Diaz one hundred million for five, right, we're just
- 14:53Speaker 1: gonna give that a round number, just so for eazy math.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Ed Devin Williams fifty million for the three theoretically fifty
- 14:59Speaker 1: million more dollar to play with. Could you put those
- 15:01Speaker 1: fifty million more dollars now towards Pete Alonzo Cody Bellinger?
- 15:04Speaker 1: Do you feel better if that money saved by going
- 15:07Speaker 1: to Williams goes towards getting better players overall, or maybe
- 15:11Speaker 1: even the starting pitcher.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Possibly that's also the opposite of what you're saying.
- 15:14Speaker 4: We're saying this deal. I just I just want to
- 15:15Speaker 4: know this deal should mean that money's limitless. But I'm
- 15:18Speaker 4: gonna throw you, would you rather right back? Because it
- 15:20Speaker 4: just hit me in the head.
- 15:21Speaker 1: So you're not gonna answer mine. You're just gonna throw
- 15:22Speaker 1: it right back.
- 15:23Speaker 4: I think, I think yes, but I also still assume
- 15:25Speaker 4: those guys aren't effected.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I think the most direct correlation here has to be Edwin.
- 15:29Speaker 4: So I'll give you one for this for five for
- 15:32Speaker 4: one hundred pretends even the exact same contract. Or maybe
- 15:34Speaker 4: we'll give it five for one hundred verus of five
- 15:36Speaker 4: for one to twenty. Would you either Edwin or Cody Bellinger?
- 15:40Speaker 2: Oh? Wow, ed now knowing that Devin Williams is on
- 15:43Speaker 2: the team.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Yes, Bellinger a little bit more expensive, same length of
- 15:47Speaker 4: a deal for two kind of interesting risk, differently risked players.
- 15:50Speaker 2: God, I love Edwin.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Give me Edwin, bring it back, bring back boys. I
- 15:53Speaker 4: thought that too, But is that stupid? Are we stupid
- 15:55Speaker 4: for thinking that?
- 15:56Speaker 2: Rob who attached?
- 15:57Speaker 3: Are we too attached to Edwin Diaz for this conversation
- 15:59Speaker 3: right now?
- 16:00Speaker 2: Probably it's probably not really a fair conversation.
- 16:02Speaker 1: But also at the same time, we know how important
- 16:04Speaker 1: it is to just lock down the last three outs
- 16:07Speaker 1: of the game or the last four sometimes with how
- 16:10Speaker 1: Edwin's been and when you look around the league, it's
- 16:13Speaker 1: almost impossible to find someone that's had the consistency that
- 16:16Speaker 1: Edwin Diaz has had since the juice Ball era, Like,
- 16:20Speaker 1: besides blowing out his knee in the World Baseball Classic,
- 16:23Speaker 1: he's basically been unhittable since what twenty twenty one.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, But even when all those things were happening,
- 16:30Speaker 4: there was never actually, I mean again, you actually had
- 16:32Speaker 4: a lot of doubt about it. But everything you looked
- 16:33Speaker 4: at for Edmond Diaz looked like it was totally fine.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Like everything philosophy, everything movement wise, everything swinging miss and
- 16:38Speaker 4: that is the same thing that just happened with Devin Williams.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Devin Williams last he did go down, but also during
- 16:44Speaker 4: twenty twenty four just went up for some reason. He
- 16:46Speaker 4: was always like a ninety four to ninety five guy.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Then he went to ninety six and this year went
- 16:49Speaker 4: back to ninety four. So that's also in line with
- 16:51Speaker 4: where he was when he was elite. Like it's this
- 16:55Speaker 4: is kind of one of those things where we saw
- 16:56Speaker 4: another team make a deal would be like, wow, what
- 16:58Speaker 4: a fun risk to take.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Yeah, and now we're making this deal. We're like, oh,
- 17:02Speaker 2: we're taking the risk.
- 17:03Speaker 4: You're like kind of like the Dylan Ce's picture contracts, Yeah,
- 17:06Speaker 4: Pitcher contracts.
- 17:06Speaker 1: It's one of those where Uh again, I'll say one
- 17:09Speaker 1: more time, Gotta see what the next move is for
- 17:11Speaker 1: David Stearns. Like again, this can't be the only one,
- 17:14Speaker 1: because then I don't like it if it is the
- 17:16Speaker 1: only one.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Eh.
- 17:17Speaker 1: If this is in addition to Edwin Diaz or in
- 17:20Speaker 1: addition to maybe now we're more involved in some other
- 17:23Speaker 1: players that we haven't even been thinking.
- 17:25Speaker 2: About, that could be good.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Okay, great, But if Devin Williams is the closer, and
- 17:29Speaker 1: that's kind of like that's our best arm in the
- 17:31Speaker 1: bullpen going into the twenty twenty sixth season, don't don't
- 17:34Speaker 1: love it, don't love it, No, do not do not
- 17:36Speaker 1: love it that much. That being said, And David Stearns,
- 17:39Speaker 1: we trust, I trust them. I trust him's gonna get
- 17:41Speaker 1: the job done.
- 17:41Speaker 2: And still like Devin Williams, like Devin won. Yeah, like
- 17:43Speaker 2: Devin Williams.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Love Devin Williams.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Like the contract scary. It's just it's scary.
- 17:48Speaker 1: It's scary when you think the guy that was never
- 17:50Speaker 1: gonna leave is gonna possibly leave.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Would you push them chips into the table like this,
- 17:53Speaker 4: It's like, all right, now you gotta start paying attention,
- 17:55Speaker 4: Like you tighten up a little bit, this is like.
- 17:57Speaker 1: This is like for gamblers out there, like playing blackjack.
- 17:59Speaker 1: You get the you get the split, and then it
- 18:01Speaker 1: gives you another eight on top of right. You have
- 18:02Speaker 1: to splay a game like this is why we gamble.
- 18:04Speaker 1: This is why we play the game. You don't play
- 18:05Speaker 1: to just have to stick around the zero. You try
- 18:08Speaker 1: and make a big move here.
- 18:09Speaker 3: It's kind of also like Texas, hold them.
- 18:10Speaker 4: If you're bluffing and you put a big bet, everyone falls,
- 18:13Speaker 4: one person stays in and they hit you back.
- 18:15Speaker 3: You're like, all right, let's let's play ball.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Let's play some ball.
- 18:18Speaker 3: This is a play This is a playball move.
- 18:20Speaker 2: This is a playball move.
