- 0:10Welcome to The Voice, where breaking, believing, and becoming finally have somewhere to be heard.
- 0:16I'm Kim Munoz, and I'm so happy that you're here.
- 0:21All right, let's talk about group texts.
- 0:25Hmm, it's the modern-day version of Reply All, but with personalities.
- 0:31And honestly, this is the part that takes me out every single time,
- 0:36because the second I send the text out, it turns into the Oprah show.
- 0:41You get a text. You get a text. You get a text.
- 0:45Like suddenly everyone feels called to respond, even if they have absolutely nothing to say.
- 0:52And now, instead of a simple yes or no, I've got 28 notifications,
- 0:57three solid conversations, a random meme, and still no answer.
- 1:03Because I swear all group chats start with the best intentions,
- 1:07don't they? Let's plan dinner.
- 1:11How about a girl's trip? Checking in on everyone, but within hours,
- 1:16complete chaos, because every group text has a cast of characters, always.
- 1:22You've got the planner, to the point, clear, concise, on a mission.
- 1:28Honestly, that's usually me.
- 1:31Then there's the over-texter, sending nine messages in a row like we're all
- 1:35tuning into a live podcast episode.
- 1:38Then we have the one who likes everything. No actual words, just emojis.
- 1:44Heart, laughing, fire, contributing absolutely nothing.
- 1:49Then we have the disappearing act. Reads everything, says nothing,
- 1:54then somehow shows up like they were fully involved in the decision-making process.
- 2:00The never responder. Hmm, are they even alive?
- 2:04I start feeling like I need to send a rescue team just to check in on them.
- 2:09Then there's the late responder, circles back three days later,
- 2:14like, wait a minute, what are we doing again?
- 2:17And I'm like, we already went.
- 2:21And then you've got the holy text term. And listen, I love you.
- 2:26But every single message somehow turns into a full prayer circle.
- 2:30You say dinner Thursday, and suddenly it's, Lord, we just want to lift up this
- 2:35group, cover these plans, and guide our schedules.
- 2:39And you're like, okay, but is that a yes or a no?
- 2:43But half the time, they end up being the spiritual backbone of the group anyway.
- 2:47The rest of us are trying to make dinner plans, and they're over here covering
- 2:51everybody in prayer, which honestly, we probably need.
- 2:55And then you've got the one texting like they're drunk, except they're not.
- 3:01At least I think they're not. They just hit the little microphone,
- 3:05start talking, don't reread it, don't fix a single word, and send.
- 3:09Now we've got messages like, yeah, I can't Thursday bring the dog,
- 3:14you know what I mean? Okay, sounds good, see you then maybe.
- 3:18No punctuation, no structure, no clarity, just vibes. And now the rest of us
- 3:23are sitting there like, is that a yes?
- 3:26Is she coming? Is she bringing her dog? What just happened? And meanwhile,
- 3:31I'm over here like, are you drunk?
- 3:34And then there's this one, the one who does not follow directions.
- 3:38You could send the most clear, simple message imaginable.
- 3:42Dinner, Thursday, 7 p.m., Yes or no.
- 3:46And somehow, before I know it, we're talking about brunch next month in another
- 3:51city. How did we even get here?
- 3:53At this point, the planner needs therapy. The holy texter is praying over everybody.
- 3:58And the rest of us are just trying to figure out if dinner is still happening.
- 4:02Now, at one point in my past life, I actually sent out a group chat etiquette.
- 4:08And the funniest part, it wasn't even my girlfriend's. It was one of my boys'
- 4:12sports team parent chats.
- 4:14Yes, it was guidelines for grown adults because clearly we needed them.
- 4:20So if you're in my group chat, this is your official reminder.
- 4:24If the question is yes or no, your response should be yes or no.
- 4:29Not a paragraph, not a backstory, and not a, well, it depends.
- 4:34We're not writing a memoir. we're picking a dinner time. And honestly,
- 4:39not everybody needs to know your business anyway.
- 4:43If you're using voice to text, you are responsible for proofreading your chaos.
- 4:48I should not need a translator to understand what it is that you're sending.
- 4:53And do not derail the conversation. If we're talking about dinner,
- 4:57we're talking about dinner.
- 4:59Not your neighbor, not your dog, not something that happened in 2007. Stay focused, people.
- 5:05And please do not like every message like you're being paid per tap.
- 5:10We need answers, not emotional support reactions.
- 5:13And if you respond three days later, you are no longer part of the decision-making process.
- 5:19At this point, you're simply being informed.
- 5:23And finally, if I start a side text with you talking about the group, you're all good.
- 5:28And if I don't, well, you already know.
- 5:33But honestly, as chaotic as group texts are, there's something weirdly comforting about them too.
- 5:39Because yeah, there's always the one derailing the conversation.
- 5:43We're over here trying to lock in a reservation and suddenly we're in a full-blown
- 5:47story that has absolutely nothing to do with the group text.
- 5:50Now we've got five conversations happening at once. No plan.
- 5:54Someone slightly annoyed, and then silence. The plan dies. But the group text? Oh, it lives on.
- 6:02Honestly, between the holy texter, the voice-to-text texter,
- 6:06and the one who doesn't follow directions, I'm just trying to make a reservation.
- 6:10But somehow, even in all the chaos, everybody still shows up exactly as they are.
- 6:16The over-explainer, the ghost, the prayer warrior, the one sending completely
- 6:21unreadable voice texts.
- 6:24And weirdly enough, it works, right? It's messy. It's loud.
- 6:29It makes absolutely no sense half the time.
- 6:33And honestly, that's probably why I love it. Because those people become part of your everyday life.
- 6:41Your random Tuesday updates, your emergency prayer requests,
- 6:45your does-this-outfit-work moments, your somebody-talk-me-off-the-ledge days.
- 6:52And before you know it, the chaos becomes connection.
- 6:55I love my people. I really do. They are my chaos. And honestly,
- 7:01I'm probably theirs too.
- 7:03And despite all my complaining, let's be honest, I'm usually the ringleader anyway.
- 7:08Before we go, a few thoughts from the cheap seats.
- 7:12I think group texts are funny because they really do mirror life in a weird way.
- 7:17Some people respond immediately.
- 7:19Some take forever. Some over-explain. Some stay quiet.
- 7:23Some people bring peace to the conversation, and some bring complete chaos.
- 7:29But at the end of the day, the people in those chats are usually the same people
- 7:34walking through life with us, too.
- 7:36The ones checking in, showing up, praying for us when we don't even know we
- 7:41need it yet, making us laugh when life feels heavy, sending random memes at exactly the right time.
- 7:49And honestly, I think God knew we need people like that. People who remind us
- 7:54we're not doing life alone.
- 7:56Even in the mess, even in the noise, even in the 477 unread messages.
- 8:04Because friendship isn't always polished and perfect.
- 8:07Sometimes it's loud, chaotic, and it's somebody sending you something completely
- 8:14unhinged, like a voice-to-text message that makes zero sense while you're trying
- 8:19to hold your life together.
- 8:21And somehow, these are still the people God uses to love us well.
- 8:26So maybe the goal isn't finding perfect friendships. Maybe it's just finding
- 8:30the people whose chaos feels safe, whose presence feels honest,
- 8:35and whose hearts consistently point you back to laughter, grace, and love.
- 8:41So if you're in a season of group text blowing up your phone, mute it.
- 8:46If you're in a season of trying to keep everyone happy, you don't have to.
- 8:50And if you're somewhere in between, just remember, breaking might look like leaving the chat.
- 8:56Believing looks like trusting God enough to choose your peace anyway.
- 9:00And becoming, that's learning not every message needs your response.
- 9:05I'll see you next time, and until then, take care of yourself,
- 9:08take care of the people God placed around you, and maybe, just maybe,
- 9:13follow those directions in the group chat.
- 9:17Till next time. Amen.
