Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the government's unveiled its new school curriculum. This is
- 0:02Speaker 1: years one to ten, so your primary big changes more
- 0:05Speaker 1: focused on New Zealand history, civics, financial education. From year
- 0:09Speaker 1: three consent education becomes compulsory. Carl Briton is the immediate
- 0:14Speaker 1: past president of the Auckland Primary Principles Association with me
- 0:16Speaker 1: this morning, Carl, Good morning, Good morning Ryan. What do
- 0:19Speaker 1: you reckon?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Wells, very early days, we can only actually see other
- 0:26Speaker 2: than the English and maths. We can only actually see
- 0:27Speaker 2: the science and the physical health and educations full documents
- 0:31Speaker 2: at the moment. The rest of it hasn't quite been
- 0:32Speaker 2: uploaded yet.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So there's still a bit of a technical delay there.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You haven't seen the social sciences yet because that'll be
- 0:39Speaker 1: one of the more contentious ones, right, Okay.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I imagine, so you imagine. Sorry, but no we can't
- 0:43Speaker 2: see the full document yet.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Okay, So when are you going to see the full document?
- 0:47Speaker 2: I imagine it'll be today. It was all uploaded yesterday
- 0:51Speaker 2: and it's just the case of the system. It's half
- 0:53Speaker 2: updating and ironically last week it updated early.
- 0:55Speaker 1: So from what you from what you have seen, Kyle,
- 0:59Speaker 1: what do you think.
- 1:02Speaker 2: It looks like, there's a lot. I think that's the
- 1:04Speaker 2: immediate reaction. There's an awful particularly the science has got
- 1:10Speaker 2: quite a significant increase in the actual content. So the
- 1:13Speaker 2: onus is going to be on schools and school leaders
- 1:15Speaker 2: to take a real deep dive into that end to
- 1:17Speaker 2: make sure that we do feedback. We've got a six
- 1:19Speaker 2: month window to give feedback to the ministry around what
- 1:23Speaker 2: our impressions are and what we think is doable and
- 1:24Speaker 2: what's achievable and what's relevant and so on. Is it
- 1:27Speaker 2: the onus, as I say, is really honest to make
- 1:29Speaker 2: sure we give that feedback.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Is it harder stuff or is it just more stuff?
- 1:34Speaker 1: A bit of both?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, I mean it's again we've had it for
- 1:37Speaker 2: oh gosh about what twelve hours, so early early days.
- 1:42Speaker 2: But yeah, the initial reaction is, it would be fair
- 1:44Speaker 2: to say, particularly again in the science, there's some things
- 1:47Speaker 2: in there that creep in quite early that otherwise we
- 1:49Speaker 2: haven't seen in the past, and then just yet to
- 1:52Speaker 2: share volume of what's in there is quite significant. And
- 1:55Speaker 2: being that that's only other than the English and mass
- 1:57Speaker 2: only two areas so far, it's clearly going to be
- 2:01Speaker 2: quite extensive in terms of what's expected in the school day.
- 2:03Speaker 1: All Right, we might forget you back once the computer's uploaded.
- 2:07Speaker 1: For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live
- 2:10Speaker 1: to news talks. It'd be from five am weekdays, or
