- 0:54Speaker 2: of the episode. We'll discuss that in a minute. I

- 2:14Speaker 3: out of there?
- 2:15Speaker 2: No? No, not yet, it's still smoky, hazy. Again, Thoughts
- 2:19Speaker 2: going out to what's going on in the eastern side
- 2:21Speaker 2: of the Cascades with forest fires and just terrible scenes
- 2:24Speaker 2: Spokane and Sheilanne and Yakama and Trice. It's not great,
- 2:28Speaker 2: So thoughts go out to them, but they're still smoke
- 2:30Speaker 2: in the air that's blown into western Washington as well.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Tenth Practice is going to be with fans today. We're
- 2:37Speaker 2: full pads. Yesterday's the Ark's probably I would likely thinking
- 2:41Speaker 2: full pads again. Today we're gonna talk a lot about
- 2:46Speaker 2: the Hard Knock Show. I mean, it was it was interesting.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Just peel back to curtain a little bit. We'll talk
- 2:50Speaker 2: about that.
- 2:51Speaker 3: You know what's interesting to me about that is how
- 2:54Speaker 3: we're out there quite a bit, and I've been around
- 2:57Speaker 3: this team for the last sixteen years and looking at
- 3:02Speaker 3: the production level that goes into it, like what story are.
- 3:05Speaker 4: They gonna tell that's what I found it interesting.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really structured, really well. I liked how
- 3:11Speaker 2: it began. I talked to Chuck about that last hour.
- 3:14Speaker 2: We'll talk about all of that. We'll give a chance
- 3:16Speaker 2: to win one thousand dollars right now, Sports Radia ninety

- 3:54Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, that I did.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I usually don't spell it out, but I don't know
- 3:59Speaker 3: any dollars. Even Cameron Dollar's name is spelled dollar.

- 4:09Speaker 2: another word for you next hour on the show. Today,
- 4:12Speaker 2: we'll talk about Hard Knocks Episode one, the first ever
- 4:15Speaker 2: episode of a Hard Knocks series for any Seahawks team
- 4:18Speaker 2: in the fifty one year history of the team. In
- 4:20Speaker 2: twenty six year history of the program was stood out
- 4:23Speaker 2: and the news of it, it was Devin Witherspoon's contract
- 4:26Speaker 2: was the news not yet done. And you get a
- 4:28Speaker 2: little taste of how the sausage is made in the
- 4:30Speaker 2: NFL's media and perception world from the general manager, John Schneider.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And you'll hear from Devin Witherspoon, who we are not
- 4:37Speaker 2: allowed to interview. He will kept them off limits to us.
- 4:40Speaker 2: We're also not allowed to interview the general manager out here.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Well, Hard Knocks did from them.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah, there's reasons they're telling stories, you're actually reporting news.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah, well yeah, that was that became the news last
- 4:53Speaker 2: night because the first time in the GM or the
- 4:55Speaker 2: player himself talked about Devin Witherspoon's new contract not being
- 4:58Speaker 2: done yet. At ten twenty five, we're gonna talk to
- 5:01Speaker 2: Tyrese Knight, the linebacker. Third year, he was a starter
- 5:06Speaker 2: instantly as a rookie. Mike McDonald cleaned house. Remember that
- 5:08Speaker 2: in middle of the season he got rid of Jerome Baker,
- 5:11Speaker 2: traded Tyrell Dotson gone, and Tyree Knight and Ernest Jones
- 5:15Speaker 2: came in. And then last year Tyrese Knight was benched.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Drake Thomas took his job and Tyree Knight became a
- 5:21Speaker 2: practical special teams player and a really good one for
- 5:25Speaker 2: Jay Harbow. You'll hear from Tyrese Knight about that and
- 5:28Speaker 2: how tough last season was. He was injuries, he lost
- 5:31Speaker 2: his job and his outlook now going into year three.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Tyrese Knight at ten twenty five, ten forty five the Mariners, Yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 2: we have to. Jerry Depoto spoke yesterday. The President of
- 5:41Speaker 2: Baseball Operations Jessman, was there in the dugout before the game.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Talked about the trades he just made, why he did it,
- 5:49Speaker 2: what he didn't do, and what teams are asking about,
- 5:51Speaker 2: including George Kirby. I'm here from Jerry Depoto, the man
- 5:55Speaker 2: in charge of the Mariners. At ten forty five. At
- 5:58Speaker 2: eleven o'clock, Brian Flurries for the first time since training
- 6:01Speaker 2: camp began. The new offensive coordinator for the Seahawks. Jessmin.
- 6:05Speaker 2: He said more in ten minutes, more substantively in ten
- 6:09Speaker 2: minutes than Shane Waldron and Klink Kubiexad combined in two,
- 6:14Speaker 2: four or five years. I mean, I was unable to
- 6:18Speaker 2: quote the last two offensive coordinators. I quoted Brian Flurr
- 6:22Speaker 2: extensively in the story it's up now at the Newstribune
- 6:24Speaker 2: dot com, and he had interesting comments about how Mike
- 6:27Speaker 2: McDonald is challenging him in many ways every day on
- 6:31Speaker 2: and off the field. This is the first time Brian
- 6:33Speaker 2: flur Is ever called offensive plays anywhere. The last time
- 6:37Speaker 2: he called plays period, he was a defensive coordinator for
- 6:41Speaker 2: Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, an FCS program, twenty years ago.
- 6:48Speaker 2: That's what the Seahawks have handed the offensive play calling
- 6:50Speaker 2: controls over to. You'll hear from Brian Flurry in his
- 6:54Speaker 2: entirety at.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Eleventh engaging quite Yes.
- 6:58Speaker 2: He was, and the players say he's really really intelligent,
- 7:02Speaker 2: and they rearely to the point in direct a lot
- 7:05Speaker 2: like he's head coach in that way, but speaks clearly
- 7:08Speaker 2: and is direct and sometimes Blunt'll you'll hear from Brian Fleurry,
- 7:13Speaker 2: the new offensive coordinator. I can tell you right now
- 7:16Speaker 2: it's out here so far how he's changed. There's more
- 7:19Speaker 2: tight ends there's more tight end motion, there's more throwing
- 7:21Speaker 2: to the tight ends, there's more throwing to the running backs.
- 7:23Speaker 2: The running backs say they have more of a larger
- 7:26Speaker 2: route tree than they've ever seen for their position under
- 7:29Speaker 2: Mike hir Brian Flurry, the third offensive coordinator Seahawks have
- 7:33Speaker 2: had in three years. Eleven thirty Your talks and text
- 7:37Speaker 2: and talkbacks the komadadts text line four nine four to
- 7:39Speaker 2: five one, or the iHeartRadio app or nine through three
- 7:41Speaker 2: KGr dot com website. For the talkback button the red
- 7:45Speaker 2: microphone button at the top, you can leave a thirty
- 7:47Speaker 2: second voicemail message. Then Ian Ferness will join us at
- 7:51Speaker 2: eleven forty five talk about what he's got out here
- 7:52Speaker 2: at Seahawks training camp for his show twelve until three,
- 7:55Speaker 2: taking us to Dave Softi Maler at three o'clock. First
- 7:59Speaker 2: question for the talk back and Tookmaat's text line, what'd
- 8:04Speaker 2: you think of Hard Knocks first episode? What was your
- 8:07Speaker 2: favorite part you like? Would you like? What didn't you like?
- 8:10Speaker 2: What'd you learn that you didn't know about the Seahawks
- 8:13Speaker 2: At four nine four five one. We'll read back your
- 8:15Speaker 2: text At eleven thirty Derek Hall's truck splash that looked
- 8:24Speaker 2: like a Tonka toy among toys. It was. I mean
- 8:27Speaker 2: that thing was gigantic driving down the road. And he
- 8:30Speaker 2: talked about that with us, his love for trucks he
- 8:33Speaker 2: did Mississippian and how much he loves to work on trucks.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Remember we heard from the UPS truck driver. Delivery guy
- 8:41Speaker 2: said that Paull and his dad work on the truck.
- 8:46Speaker 3: The right place because he was just constantly delivering parts
- 8:51Speaker 3: to see them there.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I love that.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So, yeah, that's Derek Hall. That's that's authentic Derek Hall.
- 8:58Speaker 2: He saw the truck yesterday. Devin Witherspoon and John Schneider
- 9:02Speaker 2: talking for the first time on his contract at the
- 9:05Speaker 2: cornerback's three three time probo cornerbacks contract not done yet
- 9:09Speaker 2: and for the first time. We heard from the GM
- 9:11Speaker 2: and Witherspoon himself last night on Hard Knocks about it.
- 9:15Speaker 2: This is what it sounded like.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Devin Witherspoon hasn't signed a new deal yet.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Hey, gravy baby, we're going on by man, I got you.
- 9:25Speaker 5: But the cornerback who's been to three straight Pro Bowls
- 9:28Speaker 5: is hopeful. GM John Schneider long for him. A deal
- 9:31Speaker 5: he can sign very soon.
- 9:34Speaker 6: We're just talking about Spoon. Spoon got rigged out last
- 9:40Speaker 6: night the previous night because ian Ra reported that we
- 9:45Speaker 6: were getting here making him high speed guy, and he's
- 9:47Speaker 6: not accepting it done. I he was like, hey, you
- 9:53Speaker 6: need to call the agent and tell the let's suff
- 9:56Speaker 6: comes from loss.
- 9:57Speaker 5: You know, mo talk to Spoon.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Era is fine.
- 10:00Speaker 6: He's like, yes, he's a good spot.
- 10:02Speaker 7: Now.
- 10:03Speaker 8: We've had negotiations over the last seventeen years or you know,
- 10:07Speaker 8: haven't been real fun. But every individual's different. It's the person, right,
- 10:12Speaker 8: So Spoon was just like this great, like high energy,
- 10:17Speaker 8: you know, vibrant guy. We all have the same goal
- 10:20Speaker 8: in mind, and we'd love to get that done because
- 10:22Speaker 8: the Spoon's a.
- 10:23Speaker 9: Great wire outside of quarterback for real, we got the
- 10:26Speaker 9: hardest position on the field.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Man.
- 10:27Speaker 9: It's just it's hard to guard these guys, especially when
- 10:30Speaker 9: you can't touch the past five yards. I mean, like
- 10:32Speaker 9: these guys are they real talented man? I mean it's
- 10:35Speaker 9: just a hard job to play. So when you got
- 10:37Speaker 9: a guy who could really do like shut down a
- 10:41Speaker 9: receiver or just like could be versatile, like I am, like,
- 10:44Speaker 9: you don't come across those guys often for real, So
- 10:47Speaker 9: when we got a premier corner like this, it's just
- 10:50Speaker 9: you pay him, like, please pay him.
- 10:53Speaker 2: That's all.
- 10:53Speaker 4: That's all we're seeing.
- 10:54Speaker 9: So but it's not really something that's on my mind
- 10:57Speaker 9: right now. My mind is to go wing football games.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Bro.
- 11:00Speaker 9: We're trying to beat the best team that we could
- 11:02Speaker 9: be for this year, and stuff like that just get
- 11:04Speaker 9: in a way of doing that, Like when you just
- 11:06Speaker 9: put it to the sign and they got handled. That
- 11:08Speaker 9: situation is easy to just focus on the task at hand,
- 11:11Speaker 9: which is getting better every day training camp, battling these
- 11:14Speaker 9: guys every day, compete, and every day you just focus
- 11:17Speaker 9: on playing football.
- 11:22Speaker 2: That was Devin Witherspoon last night on Hard Knocks, the
- 11:24Speaker 2: first episode of Hard Knocks, the first time we've heard
- 11:27Speaker 2: from him about his contract because we're not allowed to
- 11:30Speaker 2: talk to him and they haven't provided For those who
- 11:32Speaker 2: don't know how it works here at training camp, Unlike
- 11:35Speaker 2: in the regular season, we can be in the locker
- 11:37Speaker 2: room and we can wait and talk to the players
- 11:39Speaker 2: at their locker any player. Basically, it's not so in
- 11:43Speaker 2: the preseason. There's ninety players in the locker room, so
- 11:45Speaker 2: the team has us out on the field, and we
- 11:47Speaker 2: our interviews are done out on the field or before practice,
- 11:50Speaker 2: and they bring the players to us, so they control
- 11:52Speaker 2: who the players are and they can say yes or
- 11:54Speaker 2: no to our requests. And when we request Devin Wetherspoon
- 11:57Speaker 2: don't know, we requested manager John Sneider, we don't know,
- 12:01Speaker 2: or we only talk to him like meteor strike or
- 12:05Speaker 2: the Moon's blue. But those are the so that the
- 12:09Speaker 2: news of that was the first time those two the
- 12:11Speaker 2: principles of the situation have talked about that. It's interesting.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Players always say they don't they're going to set that
- 12:19Speaker 2: aside or not worry about that. But obviously Witherspoon's worried
- 12:22Speaker 2: about it because Snyder was worried about Witherspoon being quote
- 12:25Speaker 2: wigged out about an Ian Rappaport NFL Network report, so
- 12:29Speaker 2: of course he's paying attention to it. Yeah, it was interesting.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I'm sorry, but there's people around that give people like, uh, information,
- 12:39Speaker 3: Like I don't know that Devin Witherspoon is like scrolling
- 12:41Speaker 3: Twitter to see what Ian Rappaport is saying. But yeah,
- 12:47Speaker 3: but I hate the assumption that they found out on
- 12:50Speaker 3: their own because there's so many people around them that
- 12:53Speaker 3: will just send them stuff.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Absolutely, you're sorry to interrupt that.
- 12:57Speaker 2: No, they're exactly right about that, And so yeah, he's
- 13:00Speaker 2: paying attention to it, and yeah he wants to. He says,
- 13:04Speaker 2: please pay me, Please pay him if you're got the
- 13:07Speaker 2: one of the best corners in the hardest position. And
- 13:09Speaker 2: he doesn't mean just pay him the current market rate.
- 13:12Speaker 2: He means top of the market rate. He means thirty
- 13:15Speaker 2: one point one million plus, which is what Denzel Ward
- 13:19Speaker 2: signed last week for Cleveland to be the new number one,
- 13:21Speaker 2: above Trent McDuffie's thirty one million from the Rams thirty
- 13:25Speaker 2: one million a year this offseason. So that's where it stands.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And the fact that Christian Gonzalez, the cornerback for the Patriots,
- 13:33Speaker 2: has the same agent as Devin Witherspoon, and Gonzalez is
- 13:35Speaker 2: also looking at the top of the market deal to
- 13:37Speaker 2: renew in the same draft class picked about a dozen
- 13:41Speaker 2: spots behind Witherspoon, that also complicates this, and it's not
- 13:45Speaker 2: far to imagine that the agency that represents them both
- 13:49Speaker 2: and Reggie Johnson and the agent's CAAA Artist Sports, are
- 13:54Speaker 2: leveraging Gonzales and Witherspoon against their teams with playing those
- 13:59Speaker 2: two offers. They know exactly what Witherspoon and Gonzales have
- 14:02Speaker 2: been offered, So it's a unique situation. That is further
- 14:05Speaker 2: reason why this hasn't done yet. But that was Witherspoon's
- 14:09Speaker 2: first comments about him. What you think about Devin Witherspoon's
- 14:11Speaker 2: comments would chime in on the text line four nine
- 14:14Speaker 2: four five one. The other thing interesting about those clips
- 14:17Speaker 2: that they picked out and wrote about the news tribute
- 14:19Speaker 2: this morning, it gives you a glimpse of how NFL
- 14:22Speaker 2: teams like to control the narrative, the perception. John Schneider
- 14:26Speaker 2: picking up the phone and calling ian rap report is
- 14:30Speaker 2: part of the quid pro quo that goes on with
- 14:31Speaker 2: national reporters and NFL teams. And the NFL general manager
- 14:36Speaker 2: calls a national reporter and says, hey call the agent,
- 14:40Speaker 2: tell him that didn't come from us. And then John
- 14:43Speaker 2: Schneider telling Moe Kelly, who's the most trusted man in
- 14:46Speaker 2: this building? Twenty two years with the Seahawks, across all regimes,
- 14:51Speaker 2: coaching changes everything. He predates John Schneider. He's the vice
- 14:56Speaker 2: president of I think it's player Engagement as his title now,
- 14:59Speaker 2: but he's the most trusted man among the players. He's
- 15:01Speaker 2: the liaison in the confidant of the players. And John
- 15:04Speaker 2: Schneider called Mill Kelly and said, please smooth this over
- 15:07Speaker 2: with Devin Witherspoon to make sure he's cool. And Kelly
- 15:11Speaker 2: did that, and Witherspoon said he was cool about it.
- 15:13Speaker 2: But Schneider calling Rapaport is how the sausage is made
- 15:17Speaker 2: in the NFL. And in return for that, guess who's
- 15:21Speaker 2: probably going to break that. Devin Witherspoon has agreed to
- 15:24Speaker 2: a new deal.
- 15:26Speaker 4: That is how it works.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Yes, that is how it works. And that's why the
- 15:31Speaker 2: local beat writers who've been here for twenty years are like,
- 15:34Speaker 2: wait a minute, Oh yeah, Rappaport, Guy, I haven't seen
- 15:37Speaker 2: Ian Rappaport here in twenty years. How does he know that? Yeah,
- 15:40Speaker 2: that's how it's those type of scratcher back type of conversations.
- 15:44Speaker 2: So yeah, that comes out of every team, not just
- 15:47Speaker 2: the Seahawks. That's the way that's done. But again, the
- 15:52Speaker 2: news of it is that Weatherspoon says he wants to
- 15:54Speaker 2: be paid at the top of the market, and Snyder
- 15:57Speaker 2: is trying to get it done, but he's also trying
- 15:59Speaker 2: to control the narrow and put out fires that might
- 16:02Speaker 2: make the player upset or feel slighted in the meantime,
- 16:05Speaker 2: And that was what was on Hard Knocks last night,
- 16:09Speaker 2: four nine, four to five. One your thoughts on the
- 16:11Speaker 2: Devin Witherspoon contract situation. I will also say this, there
- 16:15Speaker 2: are some people out there who look at his interception numbers.
- 16:17Speaker 2: He just has two and three seasons, and they say,
- 16:19Speaker 2: wait a minute, A cornerback, number one draft pick, fifth
- 16:23Speaker 2: pick in the draft, has his two interceptions, but playing
- 16:25Speaker 2: basically every down for three years, aside from a couple
- 16:28Speaker 2: of minor injuries. What gives how you're gonna give him
- 16:32Speaker 2: top of the market. Well, Devin Witherspoon, for one thing,
- 16:35Speaker 2: his numbers of percent of pass plays targeted at him
- 16:38Speaker 2: go down every year. His reputation precedes him and teams
- 16:42Speaker 2: avoid him. And when you have a cornerback on the field,
- 16:44Speaker 2: who is Witherspoon just said, shuts down his part of
- 16:47Speaker 2: the field. That's about a third of the field you
- 16:50Speaker 2: don't have to defend. And I think the numbers were
- 16:52Speaker 2: forty percent or thirty seven percent of past targets to
- 16:55Speaker 2: him last year, So sixty percent of the time they're
- 17:00Speaker 2: throwing somewhere else. And that means that they don't have
- 17:03Speaker 2: to worry about scheming to Witherspoon's side because he can
- 17:05Speaker 2: handle it. Because they're not gonna throw there anyway. Most times,
- 17:09Speaker 2: that's an invaluable number to put value on that your defense.
- 17:13Speaker 2: You don't have to defend two thirds of the field.
- 17:15Speaker 2: The other thing is, as you saw some more clips
- 17:18Speaker 2: of last night, and we tell you about all the
- 17:20Speaker 2: time I write about, Witherspoon is a team guy that
- 17:23Speaker 2: the McDonald loves, chirping the energy, the competitiveness, chirpeted offensive players,
- 17:31Speaker 2: the constant banter and his play out here. Witherspoon McDonald
- 17:36Speaker 2: loves it, and he wants him to be a foundation
- 17:39Speaker 2: guy for his work, ethic and ability and leadership and
- 17:44Speaker 2: rapport with the players and coaches. He and McDonald on
- 17:48Speaker 2: the field are almost like brothers. I mean, even though
- 17:51Speaker 2: this your age group. The other thing that bears mentioning
- 17:55Speaker 2: is that Devin Witherspoon deserves credit for being out here.
- 17:59Speaker 2: He's not holding in, he's not pouting about his contract.
- 18:03Speaker 2: He's fully participating, and we haven't seen that all the time.
- 18:07Speaker 2: There are players in the Seahawks history that have held
- 18:10Speaker 2: in at cam Chancellor friends of the earl. Time with
- 18:13Speaker 2: Jamal Adams, Devin Winerspoon's out here, uh and Mike McDonald
- 18:18Speaker 2: and John Schneider truly appreciated. They're going to pay him,
- 18:20Speaker 2: reward him for that as well. I'm next Tyree Knight
- 18:25Speaker 2: here from Seahawks training camp. The linebacker had a job
- 18:29Speaker 2: as a starter, kind of heady stuff. His very first
- 18:31Speaker 2: year as a starting inside linebacker for the Seahawks lost
- 18:34Speaker 2: his job. I got benched last year. We'll talk about
- 18:37Speaker 2: that with him. He had some interesting thoughts about that.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Tyree Knight comes up next from Seahawks training camp on
- 18:42Speaker 2: ninety three point three kg RFM. Back here at the
- 19:00Speaker 2: Virginia Mason Athletics Center in Seahawk's training camp in ninety
- 19:03Speaker 2: three point three k r FM sitting next to Tyrese Knight,
- 19:06Speaker 2: the outside linebacker from the University of Texas El Paso
- 19:10Speaker 2: and the third year Seayawk in your third training camp.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I ho, sir, how did life change as a Super
- 19:15Speaker 2: Bowl champion compared to your other two off seasons. Oh,
- 19:18Speaker 2: you know, it's a chain.
- 19:19Speaker 10: Got way more family and friends reaching out son and
- 19:21Speaker 10: say congrats, son, and say conci the rain. So you know,
- 19:24Speaker 10: being pros and cons with that. But you know, I
- 19:26Speaker 10: really enjoyed the moment they had last year. Ready to
- 19:28Speaker 10: run it back?
- 19:29Speaker 2: Do you go back to Lakeland, Florida every off season?
- 19:31Speaker 10: I'll go back to Miami, but you know, my city
- 19:33Speaker 10: on the l like two hours and thirty minutes, so
- 19:35Speaker 10: I'll be going back like every chance I get.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Did they have some kind of ceremony.
- 19:39Speaker 10: Or and giving the key to the city. I gotta
- 19:41Speaker 10: talk to them about that.
- 19:43Speaker 2: That's right, the season last year that you had. Well,
- 19:47Speaker 2: let's first go back to your start of football. I was.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I've read where you your dad taught you when you
- 19:53Speaker 2: were before you Eve knew its shoulder pads were like
- 19:55Speaker 2: four or five years old. You're playing football? Yeah, you know.
- 19:58Speaker 10: I had older brothers and siblings, cousin I used to
- 20:01Speaker 10: be with a lot, so growing up I always play
- 20:03Speaker 10: like a love of heid in mine. So my brother
- 20:06Speaker 10: was always playing past and my first playing football. I
- 20:09Speaker 10: supposed to play flag, but I wanted to be at
- 20:10Speaker 10: my brothers, so I played ahead of my level and
- 20:13Speaker 10: like since then, I would just play with barry competition.
- 20:16Speaker 2: You were playing tackle at what age for the first time.
- 20:19Speaker 10: I can't really recall the a's but my first time
- 20:21Speaker 10: I ever playing football, it was.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Tackle get flag. Yeah, no time for flag.
- 20:26Speaker 10: Now we had to loose it up.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Same thing for you still have the linebacker mentality when
- 20:31Speaker 2: you were a kid. You started as a rookie here
- 20:34Speaker 2: a new outside linebacker, not new, but you would played
- 20:38Speaker 2: outside linebacker for Utip but them would switch to an
- 20:40Speaker 2: inside linebacker and a nickel defense. All right, correct, last
- 20:43Speaker 2: year at Utip you finished the first season, they actually
- 20:47Speaker 2: cut the Seahawks Mike McDonald his first season, or cut
- 20:50Speaker 2: Tyrell Dotson, then Jerome Baker in mid season and made
- 20:53Speaker 2: you Tyrese Knight a starter fifty two percent of the
- 20:56Speaker 2: snaps your rookie season is a will linebacker next to
- 20:59Speaker 2: the new lineback Ernest Jones they traded for. How was
- 21:02Speaker 2: the learning on the fly there as a rookie put
- 21:04Speaker 2: into the starting role. It was a position that you
- 21:08Speaker 2: had some familiarity with but hadn't played it your last
- 21:10Speaker 2: year at Utah.
- 21:12Speaker 10: You know, it was a bit transition defensive wise, like
- 21:14Speaker 10: more skiing obviously that Utaph were probably more men is
- 21:18Speaker 10: zone here, But you know it took a lot of working,
- 21:20Speaker 10: just hardrooky studying outside of the classroom and like the
- 21:23Speaker 10: facility to get right. But you know, towards the end
- 21:26Speaker 10: of my rookie y'll started putting everything together and that
- 21:28Speaker 10: once on I got comfortable with everything, just started it
- 21:30Speaker 10: for the natural for me, and I started making plays
- 21:34Speaker 10: on the practice field even in the late game when
- 21:36Speaker 10: I got in. So I guess on the coaches of
- 21:38Speaker 10: handling that and decided to make the change.
- 21:40Speaker 2: The first chance that they got to see you start
- 21:42Speaker 2: was Week two in New England. I remember being there
- 21:45Speaker 2: and you helped stop down Stevenson in the Patriots running
- 21:48Speaker 2: game that day when the Seahawks won. In September twenty
- 21:50Speaker 2: twenty four, how was that experience of your second NFL
- 21:54Speaker 2: game starting?
- 21:55Speaker 1: Uh?
- 21:55Speaker 10: Yeah, you know, I want to say, since I've been
- 21:58Speaker 10: with the Seahaws, every time I had to come in
- 22:00Speaker 10: late game, amount of situation, I always performed. So I
- 22:04Speaker 10: get this is the total coaches that even though I'm
- 22:06Speaker 10: getting rested practice, I always stay locked and ready to go.
- 22:09Speaker 10: And it's like that Page's game. You know, I was
- 22:12Speaker 10: studied the game like I was ready for the get in,
- 22:14Speaker 10: but I wasn't expecting to get in. But once Jerome
- 22:16Speaker 10: got hurt, with his IDs scream and they call my name.
- 22:18Speaker 10: I was ready and I own not to perform, and
- 22:20Speaker 10: I think they're ready to help me set up my
- 22:21Speaker 10: whole career.
- 22:23Speaker 2: You ended up with eighty eight total tackles in twenty
- 22:25Speaker 2: twenty four, the most by a Seahawk rookie by some
- 22:27Speaker 2: guy named Bobby Wagner. Was the last time they a
- 22:29Speaker 2: rookie had that many tackles in the season. That was
- 22:32Speaker 2: in twenty twelve. Have you ever talked to Bobby Wagners.
- 22:36Speaker 10: Nah, I never talked to him personally. They reached reached
- 22:38Speaker 10: out to me on Twitter after my rookie year, and
- 22:40Speaker 10: that's really the only conversation you ever had.
- 22:42Speaker 2: What an honor that was?
- 22:43Speaker 10: Yeah, grateful, how greatful that.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I really appreciate the them for that. Then last season,
- 22:47Speaker 2: this time last year, you were injured in training camp
- 22:50Speaker 2: and that started a much different seasons. Played just twenty
- 22:53Speaker 2: nine percent of the defensive next, Drake Thomas became the
- 22:56Speaker 2: weak sidelinebacker next to Ernest Jones. The injuries, losing your job,
- 23:01Speaker 2: you went into more of a special team's role. How
- 23:03Speaker 2: did you handle that? What was last season for you?
- 23:06Speaker 7: You know?
- 23:07Speaker 10: Yeah, I still had multiple injuries in training count, so
- 23:10Speaker 10: a lot. I came back, not myself, but you know,
- 23:12Speaker 10: once they made a transition with Drake, you know, took
- 23:14Speaker 10: them on the chan like it was a better than
- 23:16Speaker 10: on the team. I just had locked in with special
- 23:17Speaker 10: teams and like towards the end of the year, we
- 23:19Speaker 10: end up having the best course special team you and
- 23:21Speaker 10: in the league. And I was grateful to be part
- 23:23Speaker 10: of that. So, you know, just that's just our last
- 23:25Speaker 10: year supposed to go. And like right now, I'm just
- 23:27Speaker 10: feeling great for the healthy. I don't have it away
- 23:29Speaker 10: bet at your training count beginning than I did last year.
- 23:32Speaker 2: When you're in your second NFL season, are you the
- 23:36Speaker 2: pressure to come back from injury? Can you talk about that?
- 23:39Speaker 2: In the NFL, nothing's guaranteed, as we know, it's not
- 23:41Speaker 2: like you have guaranteed contract for the rest of your
- 23:43Speaker 2: life like baseball and basketball. What's the pressure to feeling,
- 23:47Speaker 2: maybe not from the team, but internally within yourself to
- 23:50Speaker 2: get back. I want to.
- 23:52Speaker 10: I think the most pressure would probably be just try
- 23:56Speaker 10: not to come back to early and trying to come back,
- 23:58Speaker 10: try to come at yourself collect you don't want to
- 24:00Speaker 10: like not be who you was before, Like nobody. Everybody knows.
- 24:04Speaker 10: They says when they're healthy, and like, well, you not healthy,
- 24:07Speaker 10: you just can't perform how you want to. And that's
- 24:09Speaker 10: really just how last and went for me.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And you're fully healthy now full go.
- 24:13Speaker 10: Yeah, probably got healthy like October last year, truthfully.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And it shows on the field. You're having an excellent camp.
- 24:20Speaker 2: You've run with the ones at times as well, alternating
- 24:23Speaker 2: with Drake Thomas and other looks because you've had inside
- 24:28Speaker 2: linebacker experience that you tapping now outside linebacker and all
- 24:31Speaker 2: the special teams. How much more well rounded of a
- 24:34Speaker 2: player are you? How can you compare the Tyres night
- 24:36Speaker 2: of now right, not third training camp to the rookie year.
- 24:40Speaker 10: Oh, it's just not a day difference. I was just
- 24:41Speaker 10: talking to my homies about that the other day. Just
- 24:44Speaker 10: like going into my third year with this defense, everything,
- 24:47Speaker 10: I just feel like I know everything like the back
- 24:48Speaker 10: of my hand. Just I could feel more mobile, like
- 24:51Speaker 10: this training can be passed with eight days, seven days wherever.
- 24:53Speaker 10: It is, Like I've just been making so many plays
- 24:55Speaker 10: and then I did my last two years and just
- 24:57Speaker 10: just feel way more comfortable out there and just bet myself, what.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Are the coaches telling you about your role and what
- 25:02Speaker 2: you can expect this coming season.
- 25:04Speaker 10: Really just they ain't talk to them directly about it,
- 25:07Speaker 10: but I just know just I got no say so
- 25:09Speaker 10: in that. I just gotta do me on the field
- 25:11Speaker 10: and let them put the chick so they want to
- 25:13Speaker 10: put it. I've been doing a good job up.
- 25:15Speaker 2: The coaching staff is probably proven to you and others
- 25:17Speaker 2: have been here, there or two. If you perform in practices,
- 25:20Speaker 2: you play.
- 25:20Speaker 10: Right everywhere the best man always play.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, what's your workout like when you go home from there?
- 25:26Speaker 2: I know they assign you a workout here in the
- 25:27Speaker 2: off season program, but when you go back to Florida,
- 25:30Speaker 2: what do you do? What are your workouts? How often
- 25:32Speaker 2: you do it?
- 25:33Speaker 10: You know I work out of Baba Rito's down to
- 25:35Speaker 10: Miami pretty much. You go work out every morning around
- 25:37Speaker 10: like eight o'clock. I all season. It really be more
- 25:40Speaker 10: mobility and speed for me. You know, the weight room
- 25:43Speaker 10: go be there, but I'll try to focus more just
- 25:45Speaker 10: being more mobile, fast and more explosive and like, yeah,
- 25:48Speaker 10: I get my work with weight room like toward the
- 25:50Speaker 10: end of the day, but really every morning, just be
- 25:52Speaker 10: more speed just on the field. Just Burnding the heat.
- 25:54Speaker 10: But last two years I fly that being a great
- 25:57Speaker 10: aspect for me and I came by this year way
- 25:59Speaker 10: more than I did before.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Are you doing ladder drills? Are you doing agility.
- 26:05Speaker 10: Or it's just more loud of agility because it really
- 26:08Speaker 10: be mostly DB's and like skilled there, so I really
- 26:10Speaker 10: just be going with a dB just keeping up with them.
- 26:12Speaker 10: I think that just make my games more easy as
- 26:14Speaker 10: a linebacker.
- 26:17Speaker 2: What if you learned that when you tell people you're
- 26:18Speaker 2: in an NFL or when people ask you what's it
- 26:20Speaker 2: like being in the NFL, what's what do you describe
- 26:23Speaker 2: being an NFL player and being a Sea Hawk?
- 26:25Speaker 10: Shoot the NFL player, it's a job, you know. We
- 26:28Speaker 10: hear sign up sun down like wen don't got a
- 26:32Speaker 10: time for most things right for the soul, That's how
- 26:34Speaker 10: it be. But I say it really just still foot
- 26:36Speaker 10: by the end. They just getting paid for it. But
- 26:38Speaker 10: it's something you've been doing since littlely and since college
- 26:40Speaker 10: and nothing different, just better competition and better work.
- 26:43Speaker 2: What do you enjoy off the field when you're not
- 26:45Speaker 2: shigning up the sun down?
- 26:46Speaker 7: Here?
- 26:47Speaker 10: Honestly, I'm a feed up type of guy, come and
- 26:51Speaker 10: like go with the flow wherever the day takes me
- 26:53Speaker 10: the where to taste me and plus I like to
- 26:54Speaker 10: just talk to my homeboys, Like I got something out
- 26:57Speaker 10: of the country, so I just driving trucks. So I
- 26:59Speaker 10: just try to, you know, motivating them, stay on the
- 27:01Speaker 10: phone and down do anything I can do with no
- 27:03Speaker 10: you know.
- 27:03Speaker 2: How important is I have to stay in touch with
- 27:05Speaker 2: your people?
- 27:05Speaker 10: Oh you know, it's you know, life short. You can
- 27:08Speaker 10: do in about it the blank of a second.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 10: Like then, they're just guys I've been close with since
- 27:12Speaker 10: I level college, and I'll just trying to you know,
- 27:13Speaker 10: we got a little group FaceTime going, you know, since
- 27:16Speaker 10: kind of been started. Been missing all the calls, but
- 27:17Speaker 10: I trying to at least talk to them once a day,
- 27:19Speaker 10: probably thirty minutes to the hour, but just letting them
- 27:22Speaker 10: still here. You know, I ain't changing up or nothing
- 27:24Speaker 10: like that.
- 27:24Speaker 2: You know how many of those friends are in the
- 27:26Speaker 2: NFL from your college, You're it. Yeah, so they're constantly
- 27:30Speaker 2: asking you what it's like.
- 27:31Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean they they come to my games a
- 27:34Speaker 10: lot too, so they know they really doubt now to
- 27:35Speaker 10: what I'm going on. They know how everything's been from
- 27:37Speaker 10: me the last couple of years, so they're very supportive.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Are you looking forward to watching yourself on hard knocks?
- 27:43Speaker 2: Are you interested in that? And what if you've thought
- 27:45Speaker 2: of that hole?
- 27:45Speaker 10: Since sir, I don't know, it's gonna be fun. They
- 27:48Speaker 10: can't wait to watch that the night. I only think
- 27:51Speaker 10: I expect to see myself there, but if I do
- 27:53Speaker 10: shout out?
- 27:54Speaker 2: Do you notice the cameras in the meeting rooms? Are
- 27:56Speaker 2: you aware of them?
- 27:57Speaker 10: Do you think I just noticed the cameras in the
- 27:59Speaker 10: wall a couple weeks ago, but I don't really see
- 28:03Speaker 10: the bit kermons like in the team meeting room and
- 28:05Speaker 10: not really be in opposition.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Have they come into the locker room yet with a
- 28:07Speaker 2: handholk yea, yeah, they'd be in their prepractice, okay, looking
- 28:11Speaker 2: at guys and they read it for the thing? Is
- 28:12Speaker 2: that unnatural to you? You think it's weird or you
- 28:15Speaker 2: used to it, but now.
- 28:16Speaker 10: I mean college they used to have not people recording
- 28:18Speaker 10: my people walking around taking picsions and stuff. So it
- 28:21Speaker 10: really the same thing, just movement instead of a picture.
- 28:23Speaker 10: So I'm ready to pay too much attention.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Tyree Knight, you're a veteran now, I appreciate you joining
- 28:29Speaker 2: us and best elect to you for the entire twenty
- 28:32Speaker 2: twenty six season. Thanks a lot out, thanks for having
- 28:37Speaker 2: Thanks to Tyree knighte for stopping by yesterday right before practice,
- 28:40Speaker 2: and we're talking about what a lot of people don't consider.
- 28:44Speaker 2: They just see guys on the field and they start,
- 28:47Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden, Drake Thomas is starting.
- 28:50Speaker 2: What happened to Tyree Knight, Well, he became a really
- 28:53Speaker 2: good special teams player yes last year. Fifty of the
- 28:57Speaker 2: special team snaps for Jay Harbaugh last year. And I
- 29:00Speaker 2: talked to Harvard yesterday about him, and he said, Tyree
- 29:04Speaker 2: Knight is a really good student in the game of
- 29:06Speaker 2: asking questions about anything he doesn't quite understand, scheme wise,
- 29:10Speaker 2: or what the coaches are asking him to do. He'll
- 29:13Speaker 2: ask and he'll keep asking until he gets the understanding
- 29:16Speaker 2: of what to do, and then he goes out and
- 29:17Speaker 2: executes it really well in the field. It's why Harbaugh
- 29:20Speaker 2: likes to put him on all the kick teams and
- 29:22Speaker 2: kick coverage teams and tackling in the open field. And
- 29:26Speaker 2: so that became his role last year. And everybody has
- 29:28Speaker 2: a role, right, I mean, only twenty two guys can start,
- 29:34Speaker 2: and he wasn't one of them. And Drake Thomas took
- 29:36Speaker 2: his place last year after Tyree Knight was injured during
- 29:39Speaker 2: training camp, and so he had to find a new
- 29:41Speaker 2: role and it became on the kicking game, special teams,
- 29:43Speaker 2: and kick coverage, and that's where I see him right now.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Drake Thomas is still the starting inside weak side linebacker
- 29:49Speaker 2: next to Ernest Jones. That doesn't look like that's about
- 29:53Speaker 2: to change. McDonald loves how Drake Thomas does everything the
- 29:57Speaker 2: coaches ask him in it and is very anticipateory to
- 30:00Speaker 2: what an offense wants to do, and he diagnoses plays
- 30:04Speaker 2: and formations and is cerebral and aggressive at the same time,
- 30:09Speaker 2: and a good solid tackler and all of that. Tyree
- 30:12Speaker 2: Knight had some tackling issues in this chance he had
- 30:15Speaker 2: as a rookie, which led to McDonald looking elsewhere potentially
- 30:19Speaker 2: replacing him. But Tyree Knight still has a role in
- 30:23Speaker 2: his team, and there are players on this roster who
- 30:25Speaker 2: have to do what he does in order to make
- 30:27Speaker 2: this team work. In fact, Jays Barbaugh had one of
- 30:30Speaker 2: the would most metrics say was the best special teams
- 30:33Speaker 2: unit in the league last year, and as you heard
- 30:40Speaker 2: Tyree Knight say, he was proud of that and his
- 30:42Speaker 2: role for that. So thanks to Tyree Knight, he went
- 30:45Speaker 2: to UTEP. He was a community college independent community college
- 30:49Speaker 2: in Kansas for one and a half years or so,
- 30:52Speaker 2: two seasons, and then went to get his chance at UTEP.
- 30:55Speaker 2: He was an outside linebacker at UTEP, more of a
- 30:58Speaker 2: week side outside guy than he is now for the
- 31:00Speaker 2: first two years at Texas El Paso, and then he
- 31:03Speaker 2: moved the inside linebacker's final year and that's when he
- 31:06Speaker 2: took off and got to the NFL radar. He had
- 31:09Speaker 2: double digit tackles for losses. I talked to him his
- 31:12Speaker 2: rookie year about that and he said, UTEB just told
- 31:14Speaker 2: him to go go into the backfield, go get the
- 31:17Speaker 2: ball carrier. Not a lot of structure. They just said,
- 31:20Speaker 2: go get the ball carrier. And he uses athleticism much
- 31:23Speaker 2: more structure here in the role he's in back at,
- 31:26Speaker 2: more of an outside weak side linebacker role that he
- 31:29Speaker 2: had his first couple of years at UTEB.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I just like seeing guys embrace a role.
- 31:35Speaker 3: But everything that you said about him too is exactly
- 31:40Speaker 3: what you'd want.
- 31:40Speaker 4: And you know, I coached throughout.
- 31:44Speaker 3: You know, I played volleyball, but I also coached it
- 31:47Speaker 3: right after I graduated college, and what I liked were
- 31:50Speaker 3: people that asked the right questions. And that's a curious
- 31:53Speaker 3: person that I like to hear about out there.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Next, we're going to switch gears to baseball the Mariners.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Jerry Depoto, the architect of the team, the guy who
- 32:03Speaker 2: decides to trade and not trade, describes the trades he
- 32:06Speaker 2: made for Taylor Ward, the trading of Luis Castillo. You'll
- 32:10Speaker 2: hear from Jerry Depoto, the president of the Mariners. Next
- 32:13Speaker 2: a ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back Greg Bell
- 32:36Speaker 2: at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center for the tenth practice
- 32:39Speaker 2: of Seahawks training camp. Will be this afternoon, out of
- 32:42Speaker 2: smoke and the heat here along Lake Washington back at
- 32:45Speaker 2: Elliott Bay in our studios at KJR Jessmin McIntyre. Yesterday,
- 32:49Speaker 2: before the game and Teamobile Park, the Mariners losing eight
- 32:53Speaker 2: nothing to the Tigers, or ninth loss in thirteen games,
- 32:56Speaker 2: team president Jerry Depoto spoke to the media about the
- 33:01Speaker 2: trades in the trade deadline, the trades he made, the
- 33:03Speaker 2: trades he didn't make, trading Luis Castillo to the Chicago
- 33:06Speaker 2: White Sox to get Sir Anthony Domingez in his bullpen,
- 33:09Speaker 2: one of the veteran arms he wanted. Dimingus goes out
- 33:13Speaker 2: and gives up four runs with two walks and two
- 33:14Speaker 2: home runs last night in his first game, and then
- 33:17Speaker 2: a trade on deadline day Monday for Taylor Ward outfield,
- 33:21Speaker 2: a right handed hitter from the Baltimore Orioles, an on
- 33:25Speaker 2: base guy this year, a home run here for the
- 33:26Speaker 2: Angels last year and the year before, Ward went oh
- 33:30Speaker 2: for three last night. Before that happened and before their debuts,
- 33:34Speaker 2: Jerry Depoto spoke about his moves and what he did
- 33:37Speaker 2: and didn't do at the trade deadline.
- 33:39Speaker 11: This is a tough rosters prove. You know, we've not
- 33:43Speaker 11: played well, we've underperformed our talent level. But finding you
- 33:47Speaker 11: upgrades from a player perspective in any of these positions
- 33:51Speaker 11: lead you back to the best player. Probably when we
- 33:53Speaker 11: have with the accession being that we wanted to really
- 33:57Speaker 11: out of that.
- 33:57Speaker 7: Bullpen and we knew we needed.
- 33:59Speaker 11: To have, especially our v left but a right hand
- 34:04Speaker 11: hitter would be preferable.
- 34:06Speaker 3: You know.
- 34:07Speaker 11: We feel like with Hailor and Ward we got you know,
- 34:10Speaker 11: at least, if not the best right hand bat that
- 34:12Speaker 11: moved at this deadline and a certain amp moment on
- 34:15Speaker 11: the short list and the best writing hand bats you know,
- 34:17Speaker 11: a lead on day skills. He's he's been a good
- 34:19Speaker 11: performance LA for six years now. With any Fitz guard
- 34:23Speaker 11: our team quite well. Obviously an everyday player who could
- 34:26Speaker 11: handle the bold would he particularly good against lefties. And
- 34:30Speaker 11: in the Louis deal, we brought back Sir Anthony the Thingaz,
- 34:33Speaker 11: who has had you know, a vast experience at leverage moments.
- 34:37Speaker 11: Obviously some imperfections, but it's a big time batanist or
- 34:41Speaker 11: who has pissed and fort and roll in a lot
- 34:43Speaker 11: of defense. And with Carlos Margas to back on the
- 34:48Speaker 11: near horizon if Matt Brash shortly thereafter, we feel like
- 34:51Speaker 11: that combination makes us better.
- 34:53Speaker 7: And you know, we tried to stay in tune with
- 34:55Speaker 7: other things that might help, you know, make the team
- 34:58Speaker 7: a little.
- 34:58Speaker 11: Better, and unfortunately weren't able to push anything else across.
- 35:01Speaker 11: But we feel like the addition is particularly in the
- 35:04Speaker 11: short term of Taylor Award, you know, the return of
- 35:06Speaker 11: Brendan Donovan.
- 35:07Speaker 7: The acquisition of Sir Anthony de Minguez.
- 35:10Speaker 11: I think the lack of drama associated was simply having
- 35:13Speaker 11: a five man rotation.
- 35:14Speaker 7: This all a positive step of play against smooth in
- 35:17Speaker 7: the right direction. Serious Ward's edition matter and you know,
- 35:21Speaker 7: looking looks like they beating out for quite a while.
- 35:23Speaker 11: And think, just you've known Taylor for a long time,
- 35:26Speaker 11: what do you think you've seen in the extreme?
- 35:28Speaker 7: Seriously, so the last year Steven.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Is year, I hope what you think he is right now.
- 35:32Speaker 7: He's always had strong, you know, his own skills.
- 35:35Speaker 11: You know, he's he's always been something in the average
- 35:39Speaker 11: to the lead level in terms of contact.
- 35:42Speaker 7: And he's always taking stating back to college. She's done that,
- 35:46Speaker 7: you know.
- 35:46Speaker 11: I laughingly I said to him yesterday, just as I
- 35:49Speaker 11: always thought my second conversation with Taylor Award was going
- 35:52Speaker 11: to be welcoming him as a thirty two year old
- 35:54Speaker 11: corner off, because last time I talked to him, he's
- 35:56Speaker 11: a twenty one year old, you know, perspective catcher.
- 36:00Speaker 7: But he really does balance things out nicely for us.
- 36:03Speaker 7: He can play every day.
- 36:04Speaker 11: He's played a lot of right field in his life,
- 36:06Speaker 11: but hasn't played any regularly in a couple of years.
- 36:09Speaker 7: Now.
- 36:10Speaker 11: We're gonna take a moment to donboard just pamiliarize him
- 36:13Speaker 11: with the angles. Again, he's done some of it in
- 36:16Speaker 11: the practice, so stock will be shockers to him, but
- 36:19Speaker 11: you know, he's the aging tonight.
- 36:20Speaker 7: I don't think that's gonna last month. The field will
- 36:22Speaker 7: play right field, and.
- 36:23Speaker 11: I think generally if the expectation is with Luke pal
- 36:27Speaker 11: likely out for the duration, that don gets some right
- 36:31Speaker 11: field days. But Donald very comfortable daching and that keeps
- 36:35Speaker 11: you know, like it keeps his hand strings in a
- 36:37Speaker 11: better place. So it just makes us a more stable
- 36:40Speaker 11: everyday team and no longer requiring massive platoons. And the
- 36:46Speaker 11: you know, the endfield is still very left handed, but
- 36:48Speaker 11: you know, Donnie, JP, cold Cole nails that they all
- 36:53Speaker 11: hit left handed. But when they're at the very best,
- 36:56Speaker 11: they're either you know, they're combative in the box or
- 36:59Speaker 11: they're just good against both sides. And we'll all have
- 37:02Speaker 11: to navigate how that works. But Taylor stepping in really
- 37:07Speaker 11: does reduce our need to have, you know, the kind
- 37:10Speaker 11: of opportunity aspect of what.
- 37:12Speaker 12: We were doing with Cherry, with the players you had
- 37:16Speaker 12: do to come back off the injured list and the
- 37:18Speaker 12: prospects of that kind of knocking.
- 37:19Speaker 2: On the door.
- 37:20Speaker 7: How did that really change? Trade toss for you guys
- 37:23Speaker 7: on much of when.
- 37:24Speaker 10: They to give up with who you had to get
- 37:26Speaker 10: back or.
- 37:27Speaker 7: Sent to in thirty keeps, you know, I mean changed
- 37:30Speaker 7: it somewhat. You know, we really weren't looking.
- 37:33Speaker 11: To add to our starting rotation, which is at quite
- 37:35Speaker 11: the fact that we actually traded but started. We were
- 37:38Speaker 11: very comfortable with where we were both and impact and depth,
- 37:42Speaker 11: so that wasn't an.
- 37:43Speaker 7: Area we were looking to address. We really did want to.
- 37:46Speaker 11: Add one or multiple both end pieces. There's just weren't
- 37:50Speaker 11: definitely available. This is one of the very rare and
- 37:53Speaker 11: I think the way this went down over the course
- 37:56Speaker 11: of this deadline period is evidence of it. There were
- 37:59Speaker 11: more starting the pictures available in this market than there
- 38:01Speaker 11: were impact relievers, and you know that's the way it
- 38:04Speaker 11: played out. Uh, there were more left handed bats available
- 38:07Speaker 11: than right handed bats, so our unique needs weren't naturally
- 38:11Speaker 11: available on the market. We were very creative in some
- 38:14Speaker 11: of the discussions we had with various teams. We didn't
- 38:18Speaker 11: really consider the you know, anything that was likely to
- 38:22Speaker 11: move from the top of our prospect system. You know,
- 38:25Speaker 11: we're foundationally, that's how we're built. You know, the k
- 38:27Speaker 11: and Anderson's, the Ryan Stones, the you know, Michael Arroyos
- 38:31Speaker 11: the last and so that that's that's who we're about.
- 38:33Speaker 7: And you know, in order to move those players who are.
- 38:37Speaker 11: Going to get have to get something seizemic to move
- 38:39Speaker 11: this team that was controlling the moving forward.
- 38:41Speaker 7: That wasn't available on this market.
- 38:43Speaker 13: So you know, like I.
- 38:45Speaker 11: Said, it's a weirdly tough team to upgrade on with
- 38:48Speaker 11: what was available to us at this market or in
- 38:51Speaker 11: this market. But we never really considered a trade that
- 38:55Speaker 11: was going to tap into the top ten. We talked
- 38:58Speaker 11: more about creative ways we could access players from Timmy
- 39:02Speaker 11: Blue at the dead round who might be a part
- 39:05Speaker 11: of what we were doing, not just in twenty six,
- 39:07Speaker 11: but yeah as well.
- 39:09Speaker 2: That was Jerry Depoto before the Mariners lost eight to
- 39:12Speaker 2: nothing last night, when of the worst games of the
- 39:14Speaker 2: year to fall down the four games below five hundred
- 39:16Speaker 2: and three and a half games out of first place
- 39:19Speaker 2: in the American League West. So you heard what he said,
- 39:23Speaker 2: and that's why George Kirby is they didn't consider trading
- 39:26Speaker 2: him and said it never got past the hello stage
- 39:28Speaker 2: for teams calling about him. It didn't give much. With
- 39:31Speaker 2: Emerson Hancock, who's under club control for the next few
- 39:34Speaker 2: years and emerging for the first time this year as
- 39:36Speaker 2: a bona fide starter effective starter in the league. Although
- 39:40Speaker 2: he lost last night with four runs and five innings,
- 39:42Speaker 2: three earned and eight heads, Toboto said, when you look
- 39:47Speaker 2: at our lineup, you've got Brendan Donovan and Taylor warditing
- 39:50Speaker 2: seven and eight where they were last night, we should
- 39:52Speaker 2: be a hub of a lot better than we are,
- 39:54Speaker 2: and hopefully this is step one and getting to a
- 39:56Speaker 2: place where we performed. Commiserate to our talent, because our
- 40:00Speaker 2: talent is as good as anybody in the league. Talked
- 40:04Speaker 2: about Ward balancing them and the fact that Ward can
- 40:07Speaker 2: play DH and the first of all, that he can
- 40:10Speaker 2: hit left handed pitching as a right handed bet that
- 40:12Speaker 2: they need. He also said that we don't need those
- 40:17Speaker 2: power suppliers to apply some power, talking about Kyle Rowley,
- 40:20Speaker 2: Josh Naylor and Julio Rodriguez. We do need those power
- 40:24Speaker 2: suppliers to apply some power, and it just hasn't really
- 40:27Speaker 2: gotten on track for them. If those three guys get going,
- 40:30Speaker 2: and we don't need them to be a superstar versions
- 40:32Speaker 2: of themselves, but we have a deep lineup, and if
- 40:35Speaker 2: this group performs with its ability, then we can do
- 40:38Speaker 2: the things we want to do. We still have a
- 40:40Speaker 2: lot of road ahead of us, and we're still within
- 40:43Speaker 2: shouting this shooting distance, which is why we did what
- 40:47Speaker 2: we did at the deadline, meaning not mortgage and future
- 40:50Speaker 2: and not send out Hancock and not trade Kirby Jerry Depoelo.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Your reaction to him, what the same as Charlie Brown's
- 40:58Speaker 2: teacher four nine, four to five to one on the
- 41:01Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line, his explanation for the trades, bringing
- 41:05Speaker 2: in Sir Anthony Domingas, getting the White Sox to pay
- 41:09Speaker 2: for the salary for this year, next year and the
- 41:11Speaker 2: contract option you're twenty twenty eight for Luis Castillo and
- 41:14Speaker 2: Taylor Ward coming to Seattle four nine, four to five one.
- 41:18Speaker 2: We'll read back to text at eleven thirty and what's
- 41:19Speaker 2: your reaction to that? And thoughts of that are up next.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Brian Flurry, the new offensive coordinator here out at Seahawks
- 41:26Speaker 2: training camp. It's the first time he's called offensive plays
- 41:29Speaker 2: anywhere for anybody. He has said he's getting challenged every
- 41:34Speaker 2: day by his head coach and boss, Mike McDonald. He'll
- 41:37Speaker 2: explain how Brian Flurry, the new Seahawks offensive coordinator. Next
- 41:40Speaker 2: on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Now from the Star Rentals Sports Tests Jordan ninety three
- 41:55Speaker 1: point three KJRFMS sports Headlines, Good.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Morning from the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Seahawks training camp.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrew, Corslight, Choose Chill.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Seahawks Training Camp Day nine yesterday. Cornerback Noah Igbinogamy, he
- 42:09Speaker 2: sat down with us on yesterday's show, moved into alternating
- 42:11Speaker 2: with the starting defense and Nickel and Dine to give
- 42:14Speaker 2: you an idea how much the coaches are impressed with
- 42:16Speaker 2: the eighth year veteran corner and what he's doing. New
- 42:19Speaker 2: running back of Manuel Wilson. They signed him from Green
- 42:21Speaker 2: Bay in the offseason. Yesterday, I signed forging a role
- 42:24Speaker 2: was a short yardage back with the starting offenses, as
- 42:27Speaker 2: we mentioned, more of a bigger back and that could
- 42:30Speaker 2: be his role. New offensive Brian Fleury says, coach Mike
- 42:33Speaker 2: McDonald's challenging him every practice. You're gonna hear from Brian
- 42:36Speaker 2: Fleury right after headlines. The first episode of Seahawks Hard
- 42:40Speaker 2: Knocks was last night. Comments from Devin Witherspoon and GM
- 42:43Speaker 2: John Schneider about the cornerback's new contract. Was the news
- 42:47Speaker 2: with its been said. If you got a guy like
- 42:49Speaker 2: me as versas as I am and one of the
- 42:50Speaker 2: hardest positions in the sport, you gotta pay him. Bottom line.
- 42:55Speaker 2: My story is up at the NEEWS Tribute dot com
- 42:56Speaker 2: and we aired that last half hour. If you missed it,
- 42:58Speaker 2: go to nine through three k are a commoner podcast page,
- 43:02Speaker 2: the Greg Bell Show, or iHeartRadio app ninety three KJR.
- 43:06Speaker 2: The Mariners restart after two games, one of their worst
- 43:08Speaker 2: games in the season last night, eight nothing lost at
- 43:11Speaker 2: home to Detroit, ninth loss in thirteen games, just four hits.
- 43:15Speaker 2: New relievers Sir Anthony Domingez acquired from the White Sox
- 43:18Speaker 2: and the last Castillo trade two walks, two home runs,
- 43:21Speaker 2: four runs allowed in his Mariner's debut. New right handed
- 43:24Speaker 2: hit Taylor Ward in from Baltimore in the trade Monday,
- 43:27Speaker 2: Oh for three. Rookie short stock cold Emerson's throwing air
- 43:30Speaker 2: way why to first base led the three Tigers runs
- 43:32Speaker 2: and so it went. Mariner's now four games under five hundred,
- 43:35Speaker 2: three and a half out of first place in the West.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Game two of the series with Detroit tonight at the Yard.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Brian wu starts for the MS. Trek Scoubels six hittings, pitched,
- 43:43Speaker 2: four hits, two runs in his starting debut from the Dodgers,
- 43:46Speaker 2: but they lost to the Cubs. Dodgers have lost five
- 43:49Speaker 2: in a row suddenly.
- 43:51Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not crying over that one.
- 43:54Speaker 2: The Storm, losers of eight straight games, play at the
- 43:57Speaker 2: New York Liberty in the second of back to back
- 43:59Speaker 2: in the sound They're in something called the League's Cup tonight.
- 44:03Speaker 3: There's a lot of cups and concer calfs and a
- 44:06Speaker 3: lot of different things that go on that it's outside
- 44:09Speaker 3: of their regular season, and yeah, I like it.
- 44:14Speaker 4: They played like ten months a year.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Respect Well, they're going to change that. They're going to
- 44:19Speaker 2: condense the season more. But tonight they're playing two again
- 44:22Speaker 2: Mexico for the League's Cup at seven o'clock. Sounders tonight.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Fighting Feltz is that's right? Is that part of our broadcast?
- 44:31Speaker 2: I know that sometimes the League Cup are non MLS
- 44:33Speaker 2: games we don't have on the station.
- 44:35Speaker 3: No, no, no, but I just call them the furious
- 44:38Speaker 3: Feltz is the fighting Feltz Is.
- 44:40Speaker 2: I just say that, Well, he's furious over the Sounders
- 44:43Speaker 2: they've lost six, Yeah, first time in club history.
- 44:46Speaker 3: That's when we go with genuine Jackson because he tells
- 44:49Speaker 3: the truth about it.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Back here at Seahawks training camp, where the cheerleaders are
- 44:55Speaker 2: taking the field, the fans are starting to come in
- 44:57Speaker 2: for an afternoon practice to practice number ten. Brian Flurry
- 45:01Speaker 2: is the new offensive coordinator. We're seeing all kinds of
- 45:03Speaker 2: new things from Brian Fleurry every day, including tight end usage,
- 45:07Speaker 2: running back us. She's throwing the ball a lot to
- 45:10Speaker 2: the running backs that running backs say that's the most
- 45:12Speaker 2: they've ever had of a route tree under Brian Fleury
- 45:16Speaker 2: that they've ever had at the running back position past catching.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Brian Fleury said he's getting challenged every day by Mike McDonald.
- 45:22Speaker 2: He explains how and why, and his first job as
- 45:26Speaker 2: a play caller at any.
- 45:27Speaker 14: Level, it's been great. I mean, obviously there's a good
- 45:34Speaker 14: foundation here in place, a lot of good players, so
- 45:36Speaker 14: it's an exciting situation to walk into and it's been
- 45:39Speaker 14: it's been awesome, big men. Obviously, you're overseeing the entire group.
- 45:49Speaker 14: I'm using solely into the entire group, but now just
- 45:52Speaker 14: having to make sure that I'm paying attention to every
- 45:54Speaker 14: aspect of every single drill. There times, as a position coach,
- 45:56Speaker 14: you can kind of hunker down on your bunker and
- 45:58Speaker 14: just focus on your own guys.
- 45:59Speaker 15: And and now I don't have that luxury anymore.
- 46:02Speaker 14: All right, how much installed right now and how much
- 46:06Speaker 14: I would say a good chunk of the foundation isn't sold.
- 46:09Speaker 14: The challenge that we face is we're going against one
- 46:11Speaker 14: style of defense every day, and so much of the
- 46:13Speaker 14: package is built to attack different styles of defense. So
- 46:16Speaker 14: there's really no point putting it in because it's not
- 46:18Speaker 14: gonna work or be executed properly against what we're seeing
- 46:20Speaker 14: on a daily basis. But that's one of the reasons
- 46:22Speaker 14: I'm excited to get to Tennessee and you know, use
- 46:24Speaker 14: some of those other pieces.
- 46:25Speaker 2: So you'll roll some of that during the season too,
- 46:28Speaker 2: because you.
- 46:28Speaker 7: Haven't seen this look check.
- 46:30Speaker 15: Yeah, for sure.
- 46:30Speaker 14: I mean we'll find a way once we get into
- 46:32Speaker 14: more like a controlled scouteing period. We'll work on developing
- 46:35Speaker 14: those skills before we get to that time. But for
- 46:37Speaker 14: right now, we're just kind of focus on competing against
- 46:39Speaker 14: each other, working on fundamentals, building the foundation, skills and
- 46:42Speaker 14: effort and techniques and that sort of thing.
- 46:45Speaker 7: How about the play calling aspects for you?
- 46:47Speaker 11: Is that an adjustment at all from what you've been
- 46:49Speaker 11: doing in the last few years.
- 46:51Speaker 14: I have thought as a play caller for a long time.
- 46:53Speaker 14: Obviously doing it for the first time at this level
- 46:54Speaker 14: is going to present some challenges. Mike is doing a
- 46:56Speaker 14: great job of like putting me through the ringer in
- 46:58Speaker 14: terms of challenging situations. We go through different ones every day.
- 47:01Speaker 14: For some reason, we're always like down by a touchdown
- 47:04Speaker 14: with fifty seconds left and no timeouts. I don't know
- 47:06Speaker 14: who's burning through the timeouts, but it left it definitely
- 47:09Speaker 14: like it.
- 47:09Speaker 15: Helps me, you know, adjust to those situations.
- 47:11Speaker 16: How much do you want to an offense dictate to
- 47:14Speaker 16: a defense what you're going to do with your play
- 47:16Speaker 16: calls versus put them in back situations and know that
- 47:18Speaker 16: their rules you might want to break.
- 47:20Speaker 14: It's it's a combination of both. It's really both kind
- 47:24Speaker 14: of all the time. You know, we're attacking defenses and
- 47:26Speaker 14: their structure, but utilizing our players in ways that fit
- 47:29Speaker 14: their skill sets and allow them to.
- 47:30Speaker 13: Six years Brian, you've obviously be in this division.
- 47:33Speaker 2: You've known Cooper Crop and he's known his game for
- 47:35Speaker 2: a long time.
- 47:35Speaker 15: But working with them what stands out being around him
- 47:38Speaker 15: every day.
- 47:39Speaker 14: He just until you work in a building with him,
- 47:42Speaker 14: you don't appreciate his love for every aspect of football.
- 47:44Speaker 14: We've had so many conversations about how the online is
- 47:47Speaker 14: blocking run plays and things that are completely outside of
- 47:49Speaker 14: the normal realm of his position group. So that's been
- 47:52Speaker 14: really cool to experience, and I admire that.
- 47:54Speaker 11: I think with there like a thirty longs and version
- 47:57Speaker 11: of the next play he's blocking on the edge.
- 47:58Speaker 15: I mean that pretty much some up, Yeah, I mean
- 48:01Speaker 15: it does.
- 48:01Speaker 14: We we were in a third long situation and you know,
- 48:04Speaker 14: I saw them trying to sell We wanted to get
- 48:05Speaker 14: up on the ball quickly. And he's like just such
- 48:08Speaker 14: a versatile piece. He can do some of the things
- 48:10Speaker 14: that tight ends do normally, and having him out there
- 48:12Speaker 14: is definitely makes it easy.
- 48:15Speaker 16: Hearing where you're.
- 48:16Speaker 13: Just literally practicing what you're saying.
- 48:18Speaker 7: I mean, we talked to quarterbacks.
- 48:20Speaker 4: You have to practice changes.
- 48:21Speaker 15: Things right, no every day and and we're working through that. Especially.
- 48:25Speaker 14: I try to make it harder on myself, like there's
- 48:27Speaker 14: a lot of thought that will go into it beforehand.
- 48:29Speaker 14: Going into a game, you'll have stuff kind of all
- 48:31Speaker 14: laid out on your sheet. But I try and challenge
- 48:33Speaker 14: myself at times to just think off the top of
- 48:34Speaker 14: my head and like, see if I can get it
- 48:36Speaker 14: out on time for the sake of the quarterbacks and
- 48:38Speaker 14: the play call. And we're practicing all the time.
- 48:41Speaker 7: With all the shifts and the play that takes he says,
- 48:45Speaker 7: and make it more up to me.
- 48:47Speaker 14: Yeah, if we're going to be able to utilize that
- 48:50Speaker 14: part of the offense, we have to be able to
- 48:51Speaker 14: get in and out of the huddle quickly. So it
- 48:52Speaker 14: definitely like they're aware of that and it's something we're
- 48:55Speaker 14: working with, working with.
- 48:56Speaker 16: Justin Auten and Jake Geeks with Derek Connuity from last
- 48:59Speaker 16: year to merging with View.
- 49:01Speaker 14: It's been great, not only them, but the entire coaching staff.
- 49:03Speaker 14: Honestly like that, you know, it's the transition was very,
- 49:06Speaker 14: very easy. It took us a while in the off
- 49:08Speaker 14: season to get on the same page, which just some
- 49:10Speaker 14: differences in terminology and making sure that what a word.
- 49:13Speaker 14: You know, I think one word means something and they
- 49:14Speaker 14: think it means the exact same thing, because sometimes you
- 49:16Speaker 14: can get lost in translation across football because people recycle words.
- 49:20Speaker 15: So that was a process.
- 49:20Speaker 14: But now that we've gotten back to camp and are
- 49:22Speaker 14: installing things again, it's it's been really awesome. Those guys
- 49:26Speaker 14: have helped me a lot, and you know, I think
- 49:27Speaker 14: we're all continuing to grow in the right direction.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Did you bring your laguage year? You do a dad name?
- 49:33Speaker 13: So they do.
- 49:34Speaker 14: It's honestly a combination of both. There's I think the
- 49:37Speaker 14: players have answered this question a lot, and they're probably
- 49:39Speaker 14: the best, you know, barometer as to where it stands.
- 49:41Speaker 14: There's been a lot of continuity from a terminology standpoint
- 49:43Speaker 14: and run game protections. There's a few things formation and
- 49:46Speaker 14: motion wise that I've added, and then they'd say it's
- 49:48Speaker 14: probably fifty to fifty across the pass game. So the
- 49:50Speaker 14: guys that have been here I think have benefited from
- 49:53Speaker 14: a little bit of the same terminology.
- 49:56Speaker 2: How you figure blitz pick up let's recognition blitz pick
- 49:59Speaker 2: us sho off the edge as much as Mike Senza.
- 50:02Speaker 15: Yeah, I think it was pretty good today. We worked
- 50:03Speaker 15: a drill specifically for that.
- 50:04Speaker 14: I don't know what the efficiency numbers were, but you know,
- 50:07Speaker 14: I think Sam particularly does a great job of recognizing
- 50:11Speaker 14: those things and getting us into the best possible scenario
- 50:13Speaker 14: he saw.
- 50:14Speaker 16: Sam Don and San Francisco, and now you're seeing it
- 50:16Speaker 16: up here. Do you see a difference in how he's
- 50:18Speaker 16: playing now versus back then.
- 50:20Speaker 15: Well, there's a difference in his role.
- 50:22Speaker 14: And so you know, he knew he was the backup
- 50:24Speaker 14: and he was there helping support Brock, and his preparation
- 50:27Speaker 14: maybe was a little bit different in that role than
- 50:29Speaker 14: it is now. And now, you know, one of the
- 50:31Speaker 14: first impressions I had when I got into the building
- 50:33Speaker 14: is how much ownership he has over the entire thing
- 50:35Speaker 14: and wanted to know exactly what everybody's responsibilities were and
- 50:38Speaker 14: how we were going to teach certain things. And then
- 50:40Speaker 14: we've had a lot of great conversations about things he's
- 50:42Speaker 14: done in the past in Minnesota and then here last
- 50:44Speaker 14: year with Clint that you know I wasn't as familiar with,
- 50:46Speaker 14: but we can find a way to implement because you know,
- 50:48Speaker 14: he executes it very at a high level.
- 50:50Speaker 13: Where do you assess where the rinning game is right now?
- 50:52Speaker 2: Kind of the running backs to their end, Georgia.
- 50:55Speaker 14: I mean, I want it to be better, but you
- 50:56Speaker 14: know we're moving in the right direction. I think we've
- 50:58Speaker 14: been efficient in practice, but I see things through a
- 51:01Speaker 14: different lens. It's not like the success of the play
- 51:03Speaker 14: on the practice field. I'm just looking at everyone's alignment
- 51:05Speaker 14: and the techniques and there's there's a lot of room
- 51:07Speaker 14: for growth there. And not to say that we're doing poorly,
- 51:09Speaker 14: but you know, I expect that to be an extremely
- 51:11Speaker 14: like reliable portion of our game.
- 51:13Speaker 15: And it's it's not there yet.
- 51:14Speaker 16: With all the ways that Mike's defense can put stress
- 51:17Speaker 16: on offense, how does that help you as a play call?
- 51:20Speaker 14: It definitely helps. I'm I think I think it's going
- 51:22Speaker 14: to be a more challenging. It's more challenging in practice
- 51:26Speaker 14: than it will be in a lot of the games,
- 51:27Speaker 14: you know, just with the variety and the pressure packages
- 51:30Speaker 14: and the movement and the physicality that they come with
- 51:32Speaker 14: every single day.
- 51:33Speaker 15: So it's it's good to face.
- 51:35Speaker 14: That and then hopefully transition when you're game planning and
- 51:38Speaker 14: things are a little bit slow down, a little bit
- 51:39Speaker 14: more specific.
- 51:40Speaker 15: It just makes it seem easier and slower for the players.
- 51:43Speaker 12: Even says where Jalen is in his development.
- 51:45Speaker 14: Right now, Jalen's had you know, a good week and
- 51:47Speaker 14: a half. He had a really good offseason. He's had
- 51:49Speaker 14: a good week and a half. He's doing a great
- 51:51Speaker 14: job throwing the ball. I think he's statistically he's been
- 51:53Speaker 14: really efficient passing the ball. He's making plays with his
- 51:56Speaker 14: feet when necessary. But we're really focused on pain playing
- 51:59Speaker 14: quarterback and that that the elements of that aren't always
- 52:02Speaker 14: visible to everybody. It's it's communication, it's timing, it's execution,
- 52:05Speaker 14: it's efficiency, and he's really grown a lot in those areas.
- 52:08Speaker 16: Green Dabel said he saw your makeup truck in the
- 52:11Speaker 16: parking lot.
- 52:12Speaker 7: Maybe you'd like to run the football.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Is that true?
- 52:14Speaker 15: I like to run the football.
- 52:15Speaker 14: I'm not sure what the pickup truck has to do
- 52:17Speaker 14: with that, but if that's the impression it gives, I'm
- 52:19Speaker 14: okay with that.
- 52:22Speaker 7: Want.
- 52:22Speaker 13: Maybe they're coming back.
- 52:24Speaker 2: What does that do for you.
- 52:26Speaker 14: As you try to Yeah, it's an extremely rare situation,
- 52:30Speaker 14: I think to have all five starters returning, especially from
- 52:32Speaker 14: a super Bowl team, So I'm walking into a really
- 52:35Speaker 14: good situation. And then I've worked with John Benton before.
- 52:37Speaker 14: He does a phenomenal job of coaching that group. So
- 52:40Speaker 14: the cohesion that they already have just makes it really,
- 52:42Speaker 14: really easy to implement stuff. And then when you do
- 52:44Speaker 14: realize that an adjustment needs to be made. They're just
- 52:46Speaker 14: so used to working with each other and communicating the
- 52:49Speaker 14: adjustments happen lightning fast, and so that that's a nice
- 52:52Speaker 14: advantage to that situation.
- 53:01Speaker 13: What is the importance?
- 53:07Speaker 14: Yeah, I like using two backs because it can change
- 53:09Speaker 14: the formation strength after the snap, as opposed to the
- 53:11Speaker 14: whole defense being able to identify it before the snap.
- 53:14Speaker 14: So I think it creates some fit problems, and it's
- 53:16Speaker 14: becoming less and less common across the league, so it
- 53:19Speaker 14: means it's difficult, more difficult to prepare for. So those
- 53:21Speaker 14: are the elements I like about it. I think, like
- 53:24Speaker 14: you know, I'm more of like an old school traditionalist
- 53:26Speaker 14: just because of my upbringing football, and so I'm always
- 53:28Speaker 14: gonna want to play with two backs at some point.
- 53:30Speaker 14: And uh, and I like the guys that we have
- 53:32Speaker 14: in that role right now.
- 53:33Speaker 2: To that end, how how are you a fullback and
- 53:35Speaker 2: use the situation? But for what you want to install,
- 53:38Speaker 2: you need to bolster that.
- 53:40Speaker 15: I don't know that we need to bolster it.
- 53:41Speaker 14: We're gonna find creative ways to get a second back
- 53:44Speaker 14: into the backfield. It doesn't always have to be a
- 53:46Speaker 14: traditional fullback. We've found ways to use receivers and lead
- 53:49Speaker 14: blocking roles, other tight ends, even other running backs.
- 53:52Speaker 15: So we'll find a way to get it done with
- 53:54Speaker 15: Bill Road.
- 53:54Speaker 7: Do you envision like bag you ever realize these legs?
- 54:00Speaker 14: Potentially we'll see if he's going to be active on
- 54:02Speaker 14: game days. We're going to have ways to use his
- 54:04Speaker 14: skills to our advantage and surprise defenses with that. But
- 54:07Speaker 14: we have to you know, the decision about that is
- 54:10Speaker 14: going to be based on how well he plays quarterback.
- 54:12Speaker 15: We mean, we have to get over that hurdle.
- 54:13Speaker 2: First. Dame Brian Flurry with some interesting comments and as
- 54:19Speaker 2: I said, more insightful than a couple of years of
- 54:22Speaker 2: Shane Waldron maybe before him and Clint Kubiak last year
- 54:26Speaker 2: the predecessor's third offensive coordinator in three years for the Seahawks,
- 54:30Speaker 2: and Ryan Grubb was the one year that Mike McDonald's
- 54:34Speaker 2: first year twenty twenty three, So in fact, four and
- 54:37Speaker 2: four years if you count Waldron, then Grub, yeahin Kubiak's
- 54:41Speaker 2: phone season and now Brian Fleury. It's interesting at the
- 54:45Speaker 2: en talk about Jalen Milroy. He says, first he's got
- 54:47Speaker 2: to be a quarterback and can throw the ball. Before
- 54:49Speaker 2: we worry about any specialty packages was exactly the opposite
- 54:52Speaker 2: of last year. At this time we were all talking
- 54:54Speaker 2: about specialty packages under Klint Kubiak for the third string
- 54:59Speaker 2: then rookie quarterback. So it we've talked about. Milroe has progressed.
- 55:02Speaker 2: He's had a good camp and really strong in the
- 55:04Speaker 2: last week or so with his accuracy much improved. And
- 55:08Speaker 2: he talked about the running game. It's why he's here.
- 55:12Speaker 2: He's here to run the ball, the Shanahan outside zone system,
- 55:15Speaker 2: a continuation of Clint Kubiak, and why MacDonald hired him
- 55:18Speaker 2: last year before the Raiders stole him away the day
- 55:21Speaker 2: after the Super Bowl to be their new head coach
- 55:23Speaker 2: to replace Pete Carroll. And when he was asked, you
- 55:26Speaker 2: heard Flurry there ask and you see where the exacting
- 55:29Speaker 2: persona that they talk about, the perfectionist side of Brian
- 55:33Speaker 2: Flurry coming out. Asked about where the run game is
- 55:35Speaker 2: right now. Nine practices in the camp quote, I want
- 55:38Speaker 2: us to be better. We're moving in the right direction.
- 55:41Speaker 2: We've been efficient in practice, but I see things through
- 55:43Speaker 2: a different lens. It's not the success of the play
- 55:46Speaker 2: in the practice field. I'm looking at everyone's alignment and
- 55:48Speaker 2: technique and there's a lot of room for growth there.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Not to say we're doing poorly, but I expect to
- 55:53Speaker 2: be an extremely reliable portion of our game. And it's
- 55:56Speaker 2: not there yet. The run game for the Seahawks up
- 56:00Speaker 2: on which everything is predicated, Brian Fleury is saying it's
- 56:03Speaker 2: not there yet and he wants more details and more
- 56:06Speaker 2: exacting alignment assignment technique. And that's what some of Thomas
- 56:12Speaker 2: Hammock was yelling about on Hard Knocks last night, very
- 56:15Speaker 2: colorful language to his running backs.
- 56:18Speaker 4: Yeah, they really let it fly. I forgot it was
- 56:19Speaker 4: on HBO.
- 56:20Speaker 3: I was like, WHOA like, you know, the radio producer
- 56:23Speaker 3: and me just reaches for a dump button every time
- 56:25Speaker 3: I hear it.
- 56:25Speaker 4: And then I was like, oh, I'm watching HBO, right, forgot.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Well, it was interesting about that. Thomas Hammock, the running
- 56:30Speaker 2: back coach who was the Northern Illinois head coach college
- 56:33Speaker 2: football last year, he doesn't that's not his persona on
- 56:37Speaker 2: the field. I'm five feet away from him sometimes during
- 56:39Speaker 2: the running back drills to begin in practice and he's
- 56:42Speaker 2: not like that. He's not ranting and Raven and f
- 56:44Speaker 2: Boman And maybe it's because he knows there's fans about
- 56:47Speaker 2: twenty yards away from him. But yeah, that was a
- 56:50Speaker 2: different side of Thomas Hammick and that's a much more
- 56:53Speaker 2: of a ball thing for sure. Your first impressions of
- 56:57Speaker 2: Brian Flurry four nine, four five one, and then to
- 56:59Speaker 2: come at oute Tech sign or the talkback app, the
- 57:02Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app or nine through three KJR con the red
- 57:04Speaker 2: microphone button. What are your impressions to the new offensive coordinator?
- 57:07Speaker 2: What are you expecting to see the Seahawks do differently.
- 57:09Speaker 2: I've told you tight ends down the field. AJ Barner
- 57:13Speaker 2: with a huge chance of a breakout season now that
- 57:15Speaker 2: he's healthy following his two off season surgeries of surgery
- 57:19Speaker 2: and ankle. The running backs getting more pass patterns than
- 57:23Speaker 2: they've ever had, and there were ball lives from Brian Flurry,
- 57:26Speaker 2: and how much Jedarian Price is already being used in
- 57:29Speaker 2: the passing game. That's something I don't think they're practicing
- 57:32Speaker 2: for nine straight practices to not use during the season.
- 57:36Speaker 2: And that's what I've seen so far. To Brian for
- 57:37Speaker 2: quick motions right before the snap. That's a lot like
- 57:41Speaker 2: Sean McVay and some of Kyle Shanahan's staple of their
- 57:44Speaker 2: offenses of receivers getting leveraged right before the snap by
- 57:48Speaker 2: going in quick motion before the balls snapped. We're seeing
- 57:51Speaker 2: a lot more of that from Flurry in this camp
- 57:53Speaker 2: than the Seahawks did under Kubiak last year. Those are
- 57:56Speaker 2: some of the differences I'm already seeing with the offense.
- 58:00Speaker 2: We'll see when the games get going. As you heard
- 58:01Speaker 2: them say, we're not going to install everything until there
- 58:04Speaker 2: are opponents and game plans, which is another interesting They're
- 58:08Speaker 2: not rolling everything out. They're working on a lot of
- 58:10Speaker 2: the basics and then going to work during the season
- 58:13Speaker 2: on the rest of fine tuning and being more specific
- 58:17Speaker 2: during game weeks of course. The first game week September ninth,
- 58:21Speaker 2: the NFL kickoff game against New England at Lumenfield. Up next.
- 58:25Speaker 2: Your chance to be a part of the show. We
- 58:26Speaker 2: do it every day at eleven thirty to the Koma
- 58:28Speaker 2: Doadge text line four nine four five one or the
- 58:30Speaker 2: talkback lead a thirty second message.
- 58:34Speaker 4: Talkbacks. They're so fun.
- 58:36Speaker 2: Just beens hoping to play some of those back. Maybe
- 58:38Speaker 2: it's about hard knocks and your first impressions. Last night,
- 58:41Speaker 2: that's what I started the show with.
- 58:42Speaker 4: Oh your favorite shirt?
- 58:43Speaker 2: Yeah, what did you like? What did you learn? What
- 58:45Speaker 2: did you did not know about the Seahawks that you
- 58:47Speaker 2: learned last night watching them behind the scenes? Look at
- 58:50Speaker 2: the team. Your tax's next. On ninety three point three

- 1:00:17Speaker 3: you still have a rally.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: That's true, yes, but it helps me out. If he
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: sent him in earlier, then I.
- 1:00:25Speaker 15: Feel lost.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: On the text line to coming out of text line
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: four nine four or five one four two five. What
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: I learned on hard knocks was how sparse Mike McDonald's
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: office was. He had some stuff on his desk, but
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: the wall behind him was completely blank, nothing on him.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: Is this just his personality showing no nonsense, no frills. Yeah,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: that's some of that. There wasn't the opposite wall. There's
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: a Michigan helmet. He coached one year as a defensive
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: coordinator for Jim harbaughd Michigan before he became the defensive
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens as a Georgia helmet, where
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: he went to school as an undergrad and became a
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: coach for the first time as a graduate assistant by
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: hanging out at the Starbucks right next to the football
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: facility at Athens, Georgia, University of Georgia and handing out
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: playbooks that he had homemade playbooks to the Georgia staff
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: before one of them finally took one and made him
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: an unpaid GA. That's a true story. I love that.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: That's how he got his started college unction.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: It actually reminds me of John Schneider's story of riding
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: his bike up to Ron Wolf's office.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: That's Green Bay.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: Yeah, the pair was about a five minute ride away.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: Yeah, but I will say though with hard Knocks coming in,
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: like that's for instance, my mother in law got to
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: town last night and staying with us, Like our house.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: Is really clean and so like if.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: Hard Knocks is coming in, wouldn't she I don't think
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: that's sparse. It's basically like decluttered, you're not gonna see
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: all the sausage you're you're gonna like, he's not gonna Also,
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: he's probably got playbooks all over the place schemes this
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: that he doesn't want that on national television for other
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: coaches to see.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: You notice when they showed the depth chart boards and
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: the magnet boards when they had the head trainer had
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: athletic trainer talking to the GM about players and availability
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: and saying the running back position was a little fin
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: for instance, that the names are blurred out. Yeah, Hard
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Knocks wasn't going about to show exactly what the see.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: No, I'm sure that's stipulation in that contract.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Yes, exactly. Remember they got the Seahawks got to review
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: that about thirty six hours before it aired, So if
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: they had anything they truly objected to, they could have said, I, no, no,
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: we're not showing us take this out. Five five nine
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: says all I can say about the Poto is fifty
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: four percent looks really good, right now? That's true. That
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: would mean they were a yeah, what would mean that,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: you're right, Jess, when they would be by a few games,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: they'd be at first place.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: That is uh, that's a little rough looking back right now.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: It's a little rough.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: Four devices hard Knocks emphasizes how the Seahawks coaching in
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: front office is far superior compared to Mariners management front
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: office personnel. The four to two five said this is
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: for the Mariners. This is on the players and the
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: players only. These holes are all over in places where
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: the players are having horrible seasons. Two five three. So
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: Depoto gets Ward, who bats sixty five at T Mobiles
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: Park since twenty twenty three, and calls that the best
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: right handed bat does the Poto know they play half
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: their games in Seattle two five three. So if the
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: team is underachieving because they have talent, that doesn't afflect
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: that doesn't doesn't that reflect poorly on Dan Wilson's ability
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: to get his team ready and confident to perform. We've
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: talked about this. These are major league players. It's a
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: in high school. You don't need a raw Rock coach
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: to get players confident and ready to perform. You should
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: not and do not. And most major league managers don't
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: even come close to getting into that realm. They don't
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: need to. They're professionals and they paid handsomely for it.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: If they're not ready to play, that's a lack of
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: accountability on the player's part, not to me, not the manager.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: And I've covered major League baseball as a beat writer
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: for the secondment of me for the Oakland A's for
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: multiple years, and I never saw it as art how
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: the manager's job to motivate. And they had a young
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: team that was a twenty year old to Molder Hudson's
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Zeno Jombie.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: Oh wow, guys, Yeah.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: That's the team I covered in early two thousands, and
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: they didn't need anybody raw Rock coaching them like a
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: high school football coach, getting them ready to play. Yeah,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: they're professional ballplayers and they should be. That's on them.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: To me, you can disagree with me if you one,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: that's fine. And those don't like Dan Wilson, often use
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: that as one of the reasons that, hey, he doesn't
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: have him ready to play. It's not his job. His
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: job is to make the right moves and when he
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: sees something that needs to be fixed during a game,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: make it. And you can fault him for that, and
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: you can fault him for his bullpen decisions, yes, and
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: he has. But getting him ready to play in coffee
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: into plays, to me, not the job of a major
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: league manager because those players inherently should already have that,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: and that's on them for their own accountability. Somebody in
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: that we've talked about this too, Jessman. To me, someone
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: in that clubhouse needs to be a kick ass, turn
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: the table over guy, and they don't have that. Yeah,
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: that I see that I've been with, and I've been
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: in that clubhouse and I covered him in the daily
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: in the playoffs last year, I didn't see a guy
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: even Kyl Rawley, I don't see a.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: Guy well he's a little bit yea kick ass.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: Guy that just rips dudes for not being accountable to
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: their own performance.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I was wondering if there was going to be
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: some players only meeting happening anytime soon. I'll be down
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: there again today, and I don't think the vibes are
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: going to be that great. They're usually pretty chilling a
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: long season, but we're kind of getting down a crunch
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: time as we're in August and there are four games
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: back in the division.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not trending in the right way. It is not.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: No, it is not, especially with the two new acquisitions
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: performing the way they did yesterday.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Two oh six, when some Sounders talk Sounders played in
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: and won in caps the League's Cup last season. They
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: beat Messi and Inner Miami to win it. Yes, I'm
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: aware I was being somewhat facetious, but I said, what
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: is the League's Cup? Yeah, just making up that soccer
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: just tends to in the middle of nowhere have these
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: competitions in middle season two five three more. Bubo Bubbo
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: hasn't been Jake Bubbo hasn't been on the field for
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: more than a week now. He's got what I was
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: told was a hamstring injury. They haven't. Mike McDonald hasn't
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: commented other than to say normal camp stuff, but hamstring
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: injuries don't always go away overnight. And Bobo was again
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: watching practice, coming out of the training room late yesterday
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: and watching practice. Same with Julian Neil, the rookie cornerback
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: and third round pick, has been out as bad as
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: long as has Jake Bobbo with a leg injury. Obviously
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: a leg injury, and those are valuable reps for a
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: rookie that he's missing right now. And they fall behind
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: quickly in training camp because nobody stops and waits, they
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: just move on. And Neils falling behind in the depth
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: chart and the installing and the performing every day, all
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: of that. The availability is the biggest ability for a
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: lot of players trying to make a first impression of
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: the team. Fact to the Mariners two oh six, I
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: think we're solidly on our way to losing fifty four
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: percent of our games, not winning them. That may be true.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Direction two fight three. Let it be known the Mariners
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: are not going to make the playoffs. Maybe, so there's
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: still time. But I know you're tired of hearing man.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not. I'm not there quite yet, are you there?
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Greg? Because I'm not because I know no one is
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: here this either. But this division stinks. And if you
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: get a six game winning streak like the trash Cans
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: just did, you go walla right in the first place.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: The Rangers did it last month, they had a five
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: game winning streak while they were in first place. The Mariners,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: by the way, play at Houston next weekend. Gary Hill
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Junior talked about that with us yesterday. The task for
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: the Mariners just to stay afloat until they get there,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: to stay within four games of the trash Cans before
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: they play in Houston next weekend, a week and a
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: half from now.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: I mean, like you said, like one series can just
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: change everything.
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: Yes, So I'm not. Yeah, I'm not in despair yet.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: I'm in disappointment, but I'm not in despair just because
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: I believe in the talent that they have on the
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: roster that we just have not seen blossom as much
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: as we'd thought to.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Four to five. On the Hard Knocks episode last night,
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: don't even know what Witherspoon's wigged out about Josh Schnyder's
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: comment maybe the Hawks actually didn't offer him top of
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: the market. Four five said Hard Knocks Episode one was
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: boring All Caps two exclamation points three.
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: I don't find it boring. I thought it was interesting.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: I thought it was interesting, and I cover the team
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: and I'm out here every day. I thought it was interesting.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Three to six. Oh absolutely love loved in All Caps
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: the first episode of Hard Knocks, and it time timed
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: it perfectly to turn off the awful baseball The Mariners
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: is playing well. Last year was fun for baseball. Hopefully
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: the Seahawks make up for it again this year, s M.
- 1:09:06Speaker 13: D H.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Mariners.
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: Well, you can't, yes, darn it.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: You can't say that the Mariners season wasn't exciting last
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: year though it was electrifying.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: Yes it was. Yeah, they've ever been to the World Series.
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: Yes exactly, And I mean I get that it was
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: disappointing in the end. But saying that they're making up
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: for the Seahawks can make up for the excitement. The
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Mariners were gosh darn exciting.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: Two oh six Thomas hammock lots of F bombs. I'm
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: sure some parents had some wide eyes when they sat
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: down to watch the show with their kids. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: That's what you get on HBO.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: Well, yeah it's HBO. That's on the parents.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Or you just say okay, they're coaches and they say that,
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: you don't say that.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: Two O six said, I don't like seeing Sam drop
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: a Super Bowl ring when I'm unboxing it. I did
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: notice that they did show that.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: I think it was fun.
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it wasn't a football don't worry about it. From
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: the three six, the Mariners have no teen chemistry or leader.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: That's why they're at where they're at. I think they
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: have chemistry, but there.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Is a listless list of their performance when they fall behind.
- 1:10:21Speaker 10: Isn't there?
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: Like there isn't the rally that we had. And I
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: feel like like Gino was the guy. He was like
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: the human crazy glue in that clubhouse, and he was
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: that guy even when he was not performing well, he
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: could be that guy. And I don't want to compare
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: anyone in that clubhouse to him. But the listening, Yeah,
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: that that lack of rally.
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: The crowds great.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: I can't be the only one when I watched the
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Mariners when they fall behind, thinking this game is over,
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: even if it's like to nothing. Why is why is
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: a team that talented that got within eight outs of
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: the World Series last year.
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: Make you feel that way, Well, I think it's such.
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: It's because of what we've seen.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: You know, it's so odd. Yeah, just don't when they lose,
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: they're just rolled over dead lost. Well yeah, my impression.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: I think a lot of it is what we've seen,
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: the dependency on the home run where you know, last
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: last night, and when it became it wasn't two nothing
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: for me, it was four nothing, like a too nothing score.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: I'm like, fine, a four nothing score. I'm like, I
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: don't know. It's not this because they're you gonna hit
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: four home runs because that's what we're depending on for scoring.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: Yep, It's true. Home runs are best.
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: And my ward was you know, added to this roster
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: is because he's not necessarily the big home run guy anymore,
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: but his ability to get on base and his walk
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: percentage is so high that you're like, okay, but I
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: put that guy in traffic.
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: Let's go right, not like car traffic. Everybody knows what.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: I mean, Chris, he goes oh for three and that
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: kind of works against.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: The Yeah, that's for a first time at the park.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: Two five. I am wrong, you are wrong, Greg Dan
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: needs to motivate when not playing up to capabilities and energy.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: That this team's doll. I agree about the doll part
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: for sure. Two six agrees with that. Texter. It is
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Dan Wilson's job to hold them accountable. I'm boy, Donovan
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: and Ward Short fit in with the other guys. Last night.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: It was one game. Yes they did yes, they did.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: Well well, So we're just gonna see. We're just going
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: to see. We'll see what happens tonight.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: Like sometimes one game, look look at what else happens
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: in the division. All of a sudden, all this goes away.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: We're such fickle fans around here.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: But I will say this, people deserve to be upset.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Fifty years.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: Have every right.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: All of these opinions coming in are one hundred percent acceptable.
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: They're all your opinions, and it's how you feel right now.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: If any fan base in professional sports in North America
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: deserves to be mad, it's the Mariner.
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: Fan Seattle in general, to be honest.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but man, fifty years without a World Series, I
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: hate Yeah.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: Not gonna win. Just an appearance up next here from Seahawks.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Thanks for texting, no talkback. Still, thanks for those more tomorrow. Yeah,
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: thanks for the text. Will do it again tomorrow eleven
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: thirty up next I in Fornas will tell us what
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: he's got going on. By from Seahawks training camp on
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: ninety three point three kJ r f M. Hi, welcome back,
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: Greg Bough, joined now by Ian Fornasa mayor Maple Vattle
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: here at Seahawks training Get Jessamin mcintirebacker Elliot Day Studios
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: on ninety three point three kJ r f M. Hello, sir,
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Hello are you? I mean well, sir? Well did you
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: watch Hard Knocks? Ass? Oh?
- 1:14:00Speaker 12: Absolutely, the whole family did. It was a big, big deal,
- 1:14:03Speaker 12: really big deal.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: What'd you think?
- 1:14:05Speaker 12: I thought was good? You know, I thought I thought
- 1:14:09Speaker 12: it was good. I thought it was really good. I
- 1:14:10Speaker 12: think it's for us. You me, others are here every
- 1:14:15Speaker 12: single day and have been for fifteen to twenty years,
- 1:14:19Speaker 12: probably look at it differently than a fan would.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Sure.
- 1:14:23Speaker 12: I mean, I honestly think kind of the cool thing
- 1:14:25Speaker 12: was seeing all the visuals of hey.
- 1:14:26Speaker 13: That's where we're at all the time. You know.
- 1:14:30Speaker 12: Yeah, so that was awesome. McDonald came across in an
- 1:14:35Speaker 12: interesting way. I thought, not bad. He's just a nerd
- 1:14:39Speaker 12: he is, and disgre himself that him that, yeah, in
- 1:14:43Speaker 12: a good way, and I thought that was I thought,
- 1:14:45Speaker 12: he I mean, he's you can see, I thought, really
- 1:14:48Speaker 12: with him, you can see why today's player relates to
- 1:14:53Speaker 12: him so well. He's a hard ass when he needs
- 1:14:55Speaker 12: to be. When he scolds a guy like the Rose
- 1:14:59Speaker 12: Britty Russell stuff was perfect, dude, And I love the
- 1:15:02Speaker 12: input from Adam Dirday on it, like, Okay, like Russell's
- 1:15:07Speaker 12: been chirping Hall about you're not the same guy.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: That's a good assistant coach to the head.
- 1:15:11Speaker 12: Great head great because gives them context.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: Hey, I just want to let you know this. Yeah,
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: guys might have heard.
- 1:15:20Speaker 12: This, And honestly, part of it is the defensive coach
- 1:15:23Speaker 12: standing up for his defensive guy. I think that's probably
- 1:15:25Speaker 12: about sixty percent of it, maybe more.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: But Dirty also knows that other players heard that. Absolutely.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: And here's the thing.
- 1:15:34Speaker 13: If Brady Russell's saying that, other guys are.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Saying that, yes, which is an issue, that's right.
- 1:15:39Speaker 12: And I would be I would bet your dollars to
- 1:15:41Speaker 12: donuts that. A very quiet conversation also took place with
- 1:15:44Speaker 12: McDonald and Hall absolutely about Hey, I love the truck.
- 1:15:49Speaker 12: You bu do your thing. Don't change who you are.
- 1:15:52Speaker 12: Remember where you came from, which he did. He bought
- 1:15:55Speaker 12: his mama house and all those things. But when you're
- 1:15:57Speaker 12: in the locker, remember where you came from, remember your
- 1:15:59Speaker 12: story of being an infant, and just remember where you came.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: And don't cheap shot at the teammate I wrote the
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: time I wrote that the cables, right, Yeah, I'm behind
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: with an album in the back of the head.
- 1:16:09Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean that. That's so I thought it was.
- 1:16:14Speaker 12: In some ways, it's the perfect training camp fight, right.
- 1:16:17Speaker 12: It's like learning, learning tool, learning experience. I I just
- 1:16:21Speaker 12: I love how McDonald came across the Witherspoon news. We'll
- 1:16:25Speaker 12: get into that.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: What do you think of John Schneider and his comments
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: and his dealings with someone you know better than I.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: R Rapaport and Devin Witherspoon in the car with an
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: open ended mic like open mic night at a bar.
- 1:16:41Speaker 12: Yeah, I thought it was. That was an interesting insight
- 1:16:44Speaker 12: into both sides. First, you said it perfectly earlier. It's
- 1:16:49Speaker 12: It's also gives fans a little feeling as to how
- 1:16:51Speaker 12: the sausage is made. There's no such thing as a leak,
- 1:16:56Speaker 12: whether it's in at sixteen hundred Pennsylvania, Olympia, Washington, or
- 1:17:02Speaker 12: across sports in the NFL. Everything's done with a purpose. Yes,
- 1:17:06Speaker 12: and you I'll give you this.
- 1:17:08Speaker 13: You give me that.
- 1:17:11Speaker 12: Rap got something from someone somewhere and it wasn't Schneider,
- 1:17:15Speaker 12: it was.
- 1:17:15Speaker 13: An agent and blah blah blah. All these things happen.
- 1:17:17Speaker 12: And you're right though, I mean, when Witherspoon size is
- 1:17:21Speaker 12: contracted one hundred percent, it's going to be in a
- 1:17:24Speaker 12: rapaport that breaks it.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: It's not the ones that are out here every day
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: to ask him the question.
- 1:17:28Speaker 12: But he also like, here's the thing. You and I
- 1:17:29Speaker 12: both know this. I know this well because I had
- 1:17:31Speaker 12: Rap on the show weekly for about ten years. He's
- 1:17:34Speaker 12: gonna be here on Friday, by the way, on your show. Yeah,
- 1:17:37Speaker 12: we'll have him on the show. But Rapp and Schneider
- 1:17:40Speaker 12: have a great relationship. They talk all the time. So
- 1:17:43Speaker 12: that wasn't like out of the ordinary for him to
- 1:17:45Speaker 12: like say, hey, I'm gonna call Rap and blah blah blah,
- 1:17:48Speaker 12: we're gonna get this stuff square away.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: And that report is built. Rapport is with rap aport
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: is built over many years and many transactions.
- 1:17:55Speaker 12: Quid pro q it's it's built with that, it's it's
- 1:17:59Speaker 12: there's a truck factor.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: And because he's never here, that's how I rapport.
- 1:18:03Speaker 12: Last time he was here was I want to say,
- 1:18:06Speaker 12: twenty sixteen.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it took the Sea Orks to win a Super
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: Bowl for this.
- 1:18:10Speaker 13: He came here the couple of years.
- 1:18:11Speaker 12: He was coming here every year for a while, but
- 1:18:14Speaker 12: the last time it's been probably at least ten years.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Yeah, what do you got going on today?
- 1:18:21Speaker 12: Pud Clark's gonna join us right as you've been reporting.
- 1:18:25Speaker 12: He's working with the ones he is, So we're gonna
- 1:18:27Speaker 12: talk to the second round draft pick coming up here
- 1:18:30Speaker 12: right off the top of the show.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: Big week for him. Yeah.
- 1:18:33Speaker 12: Well, we're gonna check into the Portland situation again and
- 1:18:36Speaker 12: how it relates to Seattle and the NBA coming back
- 1:18:38Speaker 12: here with the Sonics and everything else.
- 1:18:40Speaker 13: It's a mess.
- 1:18:40Speaker 12: I can just tell you that Jason Quick and the
- 1:18:42Speaker 12: Athletics gonna join us in the one o'clock hour and
- 1:18:45Speaker 12: we'll get into last night's baseball game.
- 1:18:48Speaker 13: We got a lot to say about that too.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Man, I thought you might have an emergency.
- 1:18:55Speaker 13: Let's listen. Nobody needs to encourage that.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: The infness is up next to talk about all of
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: that and more from Seahawks training again. Jesson, Mcinhard, Greg Bol,
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: thank you for listening. We'll do it again tomorrow here
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: from the Seahawks training camp. He ends up next on
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: ninety three point three KJRFM
