- 1:00Speaker 3: Who in the world are we going to replace LSU
- 1:01Speaker 3: with in the SEC?
- 1:05Speaker 2: I don't know. I think maybe a better punishment would
- 1:08Speaker 2: be they can't play any home games and all games
- 1:11Speaker 2: have to be played in purple jerseys or something like that,
- 1:15Speaker 2: truly driving them crazy. And I say this as somebody
- 1:22Speaker 2: who actually likes LSU. I've enjoyed visits down there and
- 1:25Speaker 2: just something about the atmosphere special. But when they made
- 1:30Speaker 2: the hire they made, and maybe this applies to more
- 1:33Speaker 2: to one sport down there, they might as well have
- 1:36Speaker 2: given a 12-year-old boy a box of matches and go say,
- 1:40Speaker 2: take care of the fireworks tent for an evening there.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And now they're shocked that it's blowing up. So, you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: Like many others say, let's just play the games, get going.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But there needs to be some, obviously, phonology to this.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And otherwise, because now you already have fans of every
- 2:01Speaker 2: school saying, well, why don't we do the same? Because,
- 2:03Speaker 2: you know, we play well. Because it's self-destructive. It's damaging
- 2:08Speaker 2: to the sport in general. I know that's an archaic thought.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Care about the state of the sport in general? All
- 2:13Speaker 2: that stuff. Right. Anyway, it's not something we have to
- 2:16Speaker 2: worry about right now at Mississippi State. We're still, as
- 2:18Speaker 2: of this morning, Jeff Levy clarified that Jerron Manning and
- 2:23Speaker 2: Malik Silla will not be playing this first game. They're
- 2:26Speaker 2: still working through the process there, waiting basically for the
- 2:30Speaker 2: final ruling to come out and see if it's worth
- 2:31Speaker 2: their time. And even if they were clear, it would
- 2:34Speaker 2: be October 4. They could really be a factor now
- 2:36Speaker 2: because they haven't done anything since spring. Also, We don't
- 2:41Speaker 2: know all he said about the Miles McVeigh situation was
- 2:45Speaker 2: that the discipline was taken care of in-house, and he'll
- 2:47Speaker 2: be ready to roll this weekend. Maybe an interesting metaphor,
- 2:51Speaker 2: given that it was a rolling violation that he ran
- 2:54Speaker 2: afoul of, but who am I to say? And the
- 2:57Speaker 2: transfer defensive lineman, that's still being worked through as well,
- 3:02Speaker 2: waiting for eligibility status confirmation. No injury news this morning,
- 3:07Speaker 2: not that we expected anything, but I think the Bulldogs
- 3:09Speaker 2: are coming in really healthy for this preseason to the
- 3:13Speaker 2: point that Kamario Taylor was talking today at the press
- 3:16Speaker 2: conference about how he'd been begging Coach Levy to let
- 3:19Speaker 2: him run some and not blow the whistle and Levy
- 3:22Speaker 2: would say, nah, you stay in the pocket. Well, now
- 3:25Speaker 2: the real game has come and let's see if he
- 3:26Speaker 2: stays in the pocket as told to or just can't
- 3:30Speaker 2: give him to the temptation and starts running a little bit.
- 3:33Speaker 2: As far as game interest, it's Louisiana Monroe. You're going
- 3:36Speaker 2: to win the game. The whole idea is what are
- 3:39Speaker 2: we going to see, what are we not going to see,
- 3:41Speaker 2: what will they hold back ahead of Minnesota, if anything.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And that's a long introduction to say, Jake, that it's
- 3:47Speaker 2: time to play a lightweight on opening weekend and get
- 3:49Speaker 2: the first look at the 20-2016.
- 3:52Speaker 3: David Murray on your radio. Make sure to get a subscription.
- 3:54Speaker 3: If you're a Mississippi State fan, go to Gene's page, 247sports. com.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Make sure to follow Gene. David and Steve and their
- 4:00Speaker 3: team on X. Yeah, David, I mean, Mississippi State, a
- 4:03Speaker 3: big favorite coming into the weekend. I think I saw
- 4:05Speaker 3: it somewhere around 28 or 29 points, depending on where
- 4:09Speaker 3: you shop this thing at. I'm looking at 28 and
- 4:11Speaker 3: a half, courtesy of Ameristar Casino.
- 4:14Speaker 1: What do you look for in a game like this?
- 4:16Speaker 3: I know what I look for is how well does
- 4:19Speaker 3: the offensive line block throughout the game, meaning are they
- 4:23Speaker 3: opening run holes or is it hard to churn out
- 4:26Speaker 3: run yards? You know, if Mississippi State has a couple
- 4:27Speaker 3: pop plays, two or three big plays, and they get
- 4:30Speaker 3: up 21-0, that's one thing. But are they opening holes?
- 4:34Speaker 3: Are they allowing pressure to get to the quarterback, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 3: that offensive front defensively? Are you getting gashed in the
- 4:39Speaker 3: run game? What are you looking for?
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm thinking along the same lines there. I want
- 4:44Speaker 2: to see control of the line of scrimmage on both
- 4:46Speaker 2: sides of the ball, obviously, in this game. You notice, too,
- 4:50Speaker 2: that in both of Jeff Levy's season openers. Let's see.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Last year, they scored about 90 seconds into the game
- 4:57Speaker 2: on a throw to say Detroit two years ago, they,
- 5:01Speaker 2: a sideline throw turned into a big touchdown pass, just
- 5:05Speaker 2: 30 seconds in the game to Jordan mostly. So will
- 5:08Speaker 2: this be the game where finally state just goes on
- 5:10Speaker 2: a regular routine sort of opening drive, assuming they get
- 5:14Speaker 2: the ball, which Jeff Levy teams have been really good
- 5:16Speaker 2: at getting the ball first for one thing. Um, Yeah,
- 5:20Speaker 2: I want to see that. I'd rather see a grinding
- 5:23Speaker 2: execution game with a few explosives. I would just rather
- 5:27Speaker 2: see basic execution out there in this sort of game,
- 5:30Speaker 2: more of a scrimmage type rather than fireworks-type plays, because
- 5:35Speaker 2: in the long run, you're going to need to make
- 5:37Speaker 2: those drives against your better teams. And one thing that
- 5:41Speaker 2: let me point out this morning, too, and I agree with,
- 5:43Speaker 2: having watched some games over the weekend, You notice a
- 5:46Speaker 2: lot of pre-snap penalties or alignment problems or getting the ball,
- 5:50Speaker 2: the play you called in time, getting everybody lined up correctly.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I want to see that done this first game because
- 5:57Speaker 2: if you're taking care of basics in your first game
- 6:00Speaker 2: like that, you don't have a lot of pre-snap penalties,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you don't commit turnovers, that's probably the most pleasing way
- 6:07Speaker 2: to start the season, at least to Jeff Levy's mind
- 6:09Speaker 2: at this point. Just give me a nice, efficient game,
- 6:12Speaker 2: no injuries involved, and start getting ready for the make
- 6:16Speaker 2: or break games, which are coming up very quickly this
- 6:18Speaker 2: season with, uh, both on the road, Minnesota and South Carolina.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Yeah, David, it's, it's interesting.
- 6:24Speaker 3: You, you play the game on Saturday and of course
- 6:26Speaker 3: we'll get into Minnesota next week. I think that is,
- 6:28Speaker 3: we've talked about this all off season. That's, that's kind
- 6:30Speaker 3: of the linchpin of this season is how they play
- 6:32Speaker 3: on the road. Uh, you know, at an opponent that
- 6:34Speaker 3: you're not familiar with. Uh, and then of course, South
- 6:37Speaker 3: Carolina at home before coming back home to, uh, Missouri,
- 6:40Speaker 3: as far as the health of the team, um, After camp,
- 6:43Speaker 3: now over in the game week, what is the health
- 6:46Speaker 3: of the team that we know of today?
- 6:49Speaker 2: As far as we know, it's good. I ran a
- 6:51Speaker 2: piece last week on the site, scoured all the injury
- 6:55Speaker 2: news around the SEC that was available, and the two
- 6:58Speaker 2: Mississippi teams are starting out the season in really good
- 7:00Speaker 2: health by all indications there. You've got some other teams
- 7:03Speaker 2: that have some injuries, Tennessee for one, and then you've
- 7:07Speaker 2: got the cloud hanging over some eligibilities as well. So,
- 7:11Speaker 2: I think right now, Levy could not ask for his
- 7:14Speaker 2: team to be better physical shape. As far as emotional shape,
- 7:18Speaker 2: I think that's even better. Camario was great this morning.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Isaac Smith, Anthony Evans, we talked to those guys, Kelly Jones.
- 7:27Speaker 2: They're ready to play ball, but not in the sense
- 7:30Speaker 2: that they're just tired of camp. I don't think they
- 7:33Speaker 2: ever got to that point. I think they've been approaching
- 7:35Speaker 2: this camp with a great attitude all the way through
- 7:38Speaker 2: so far, and that, to me, There's another mark that
- 7:41Speaker 2: at least whatever happens in the field, you know the
- 7:43Speaker 2: culture is being built correctly. They've handled all those assignments well.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Now it comes down to proving it on the field
- 7:50Speaker 2: because everything's great until you start battling for minutes and
- 7:55Speaker 2: snaps and things like that. I want to see, like
- 7:58Speaker 2: I said, lines of scrimmage established. If you're going to
- 8:02Speaker 2: ask what is one arcane thing that I'm looking for.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Would say– I want to see the speed in general
- 8:11Speaker 2: of the front line and the linebackers. I expect them
- 8:14Speaker 2: to be faster this year, but I want to see
- 8:16Speaker 2: it actually happen. Maybe not showing up in sacks and hurries,
- 8:19Speaker 2: but I want to see a lot more mobility from
- 8:21Speaker 2: that front six or so, because to me that's going
- 8:25Speaker 2: to be more the key once you get into the season.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Is Zach Arnett's defense really going to be as let
- 8:30Speaker 2: it rip and as aggressive as they hope to be
- 8:33Speaker 2: out there, which frankly I think suits the roster very well?
- 8:37Speaker 2: Or do they hold things back for the opening game?
- 8:40Speaker 2: And that's one of the more arcane things I think
- 8:42Speaker 2: I'm watching for this weekend as well.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Talking to David Murray, Mississippi State, season opener coming up
- 8:46Speaker 3: against Louisiana Monroe this Saturday, Monday edition of your radio show. Yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 3: I would figure, David, you would see, because looking at
- 8:54Speaker 3: Minnesota's schedule, they open with Eastern Illinois. Both of these
- 8:58Speaker 3: two coaching staffs know what next week is. It's their
- 9:01Speaker 3: first big game. But you're going to see both teams
- 9:03Speaker 3: kind of hold that back, I would assume, Arnett plays
- 9:06Speaker 3: a base defense. He may do a little blitzing if
- 9:08Speaker 3: they need to here and there. And offensively, probably more
- 9:11Speaker 3: of a base package as well and see what you
- 9:13Speaker 3: can come up with and try to hold that stuff
- 9:15Speaker 3: to next week.
- 9:17Speaker 2: You know, we say that, but I don't think it's
- 9:19Speaker 2: in Arnett's character to hold things back that much. And
- 9:23Speaker 2: I don't think that's in this team's character defensively. I'm
- 9:27Speaker 2: not talking about, you know, schematically. Obviously, they'll hold some
- 9:30Speaker 2: cards back there. I'm just talking more about the attitude
- 9:33Speaker 2: and approach to it. I think he does just turn
- 9:36Speaker 2: them loose and let them go. And because let's be blunt,
- 9:40Speaker 2: this is the kind of game where you can probably
- 9:41Speaker 2: afford to make mistakes and not pay too dearly for it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: It's one thing to practice against your own offense, especially
- 9:47Speaker 2: when you're not allowed to tackle the quarterback or even,
- 9:50Speaker 2: you know, knock your own running backs receivers down too hard.
- 9:54Speaker 2: This game, all the leashes are off and it's time
- 9:57Speaker 2: to go. I want to see if they translate that
- 9:59Speaker 2: a onto the field against an opponent that they should dominate,
- 10:05Speaker 2: but still at the same time not take anything for granted.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I know it's a very fine line there that only
- 10:09Speaker 2: the actual play can show, but maybe offensively they hold
- 10:14Speaker 2: some cards back. I don't think defensively they will. I
- 10:17Speaker 2: think you have to be what you are from the
- 10:20Speaker 2: first snap of the season because that's just going to
- 10:22Speaker 2: be the mentality for the whole season. If you're trying
- 10:25Speaker 2: to rein them in and then say next week, no,
- 10:27Speaker 2: you can go loose, that can get a little confusing
- 10:29Speaker 2: at times. I think you just establish who and what
- 10:32Speaker 2: you are right from the first time the ball snapped
- 10:34Speaker 2: by the other team.
- 10:36Speaker 3: David Berry, make sure to find him at jeanspage247sports. com. They'll
- 10:39Speaker 3: have you covered all season long with practice reports.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Updates, and more.
- 10:43Speaker 3: David, thank you so much. We should have some good
- 10:45Speaker 3: weather on Saturday. I did see where Tuscaloosa is expected
- 10:48Speaker 3: to be, like 110 somewhere. On the field, it will
- 10:51Speaker 3: be rather warm on Saturday, but you'll be covered.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Well, I'll be covered, but remember, the field press box
- 10:59Speaker 2: does not have air conditioning.
- 11:00Speaker 1: That's right.
- 11:01Speaker 2: It never has, probably never will. So don't act like
- 11:04Speaker 2: I'm in the arms of comfort up there in that box.
- 11:08Speaker 2: At least I'll be in the shade. But, you know,
- 11:09Speaker 2: Levy made that comment to do. 630 start, at least
- 11:13Speaker 2: half the stadium is going to be in shade. So
- 11:16Speaker 2: it shouldn't be too bad at all, and frankly, with
- 11:18Speaker 2: the buildup to this team, everybody wanted to see Camario play,
- 11:21Speaker 2: wanted to see a faster, more aggressive defense play, and frankly,
- 11:25Speaker 2: a great chance to obviously get up there and just
- 11:27Speaker 2: watch the team have some fun opening game, and you
- 11:30Speaker 2: don't get to see them again for another couple of weeks.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I think the turnout should be very interesting. We'll get
- 11:35Speaker 2: a judge of what the fan base really feels about
- 11:37Speaker 2: this team, their optimism, by what the crowd count is
- 11:40Speaker 2: come about halftime Saturday.
- 11:42Speaker 1: David and Joy, have a great Labor Day weekend. We'll
- 11:44Speaker 1: talk next week.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Guys, talk to you next Monday.
