- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, Hello there, Emily a body here checking in with
- 0:05Speaker 1: episode eighty seven of Hurdle, a podcast that talks to
- 0:09Speaker 1: everyone from entrepreneurs to top CEOs and athletes about how
- 0:12Speaker 1: they've gotten through tough times hurdles of sorts by leaning
- 0:17Speaker 1: in to wellness. Today, I am chatting with the ever
- 0:22Speaker 1: lovely Katie Storino. She is a body positivity advocate. She's
- 0:27Speaker 1: also the founder of both Megababe and a blog called
- 0:31Speaker 1: The twelve Ish Style. I feel like that's just grazing
- 0:34Speaker 1: the surface before we get into chatting all about Katie
- 0:38Speaker 1: and getting into her story. A quick shout out to
- 0:41Speaker 1: the first of two sponsors today, Athletic Greens. I'm gonna
- 0:44Speaker 1: be honest with you, guys. I feel like holiday shopping
- 0:46Speaker 1: for me this year was a little bit easier than usual,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and that's because I've finally established this wellness toolkit of
- 0:54Speaker 1: sorts and I want to give to my essentials to
- 0:56Speaker 1: my friends and family now. Of course, Athletic Greens is
- 0:59Speaker 1: one of those essentials. Not only does it have twelve
- 1:03Speaker 1: servings of fruits and vegetables, but the greens butter also
- 1:07Speaker 1: acts as my one stop shop for any supplementation that
- 1:11Speaker 1: I'm doing. Instead of taking a bunch of different pills
- 1:13Speaker 1: in the morning, now I only shake up a bottle
- 1:16Speaker 1: of this, and that's because it's got prebiotics, probiotics, digestive enzymes, adaptogens, superfoods.
- 1:23Speaker 1: It's got everything I need just to feel like my
- 1:26Speaker 1: best self. They are offering Hurdle listeners a really stellar deal.

- 1:45Speaker 2: Today, No code necessary.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Now sending a little love to another sponsor of mine,
- 1:52Speaker 1: Whoop Now. I sat down with Whoop's founder, Will Ahmed
- 1:55Speaker 1: the other day and he said to me something that
- 1:57Speaker 1: I thought was really poignant that Whoop is one of
- 1:59Speaker 1: the only wearables that will actually tell you when you
- 2:03Speaker 1: should take time off.
- 2:04Speaker 2: We're so used to getting rewarded for really.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Pushing the envelope with a lot of the things that
- 2:11Speaker 1: we are getting data from, and I love that about
- 2:14Speaker 1: Woop that it helps me better take care of my
- 2:17Speaker 1: body when it comes to how I recover when I
- 2:20Speaker 1: take on strain and of course an emphasis on sleep
- 2:23Speaker 1: and sleep quality. Now whoop is unique and that it
- 2:26Speaker 1: provides a daily recovery score every single morning when the
- 2:30Speaker 1: user wakes up to let them know how ready their
- 2:32Speaker 1: body is to take on strain for the day. So
- 2:35Speaker 1: that feature has really helped me fine tune my workout
- 2:39Speaker 1: strategy and better listen to my body. They are offering
- 2:43Speaker 1: hurdle listeners a really great deal.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It's a free woopstrap.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Three point zero as well as fifteen percent off any
- 2:50Speaker 1: membership by using the code hurdle at checkout. Just head
- 2:54Speaker 1: on over to woop dot com that's whoop dot com
- 2:58Speaker 1: and use the code hurdle at check I got for
- 3:00Speaker 1: a free whoop Strap three point zero and fifteen percent
- 3:03Speaker 1: off any membership to optimize the way you train.
- 3:07Speaker 2: All righty, Katie Storreno.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Now, if you follow Katie on Instagram it's just her
- 3:12Speaker 1: name at Katie Strno, then you probably already have a
- 3:19Speaker 1: good understanding that this woman is not just hilarious but
- 3:23Speaker 1: a total boss. Sitting down with her for the first
- 3:26Speaker 1: time felt like I was sitting down with an old friend,
- 3:29Speaker 1: and I really appreciated how upfront and honest. The megababe
- 3:34Speaker 1: founder got with me. We talked about her hurdle moment,
- 3:37Speaker 1: a divorce a few years back, which triggered some weight
- 3:40Speaker 1: gain for her. Instead of feeling ashamed or frustrated, she
- 3:45Speaker 1: felt more like herself.
- 3:47Speaker 2: She felt more empowered.
- 3:49Speaker 1: She says to me in today's episode that for so
- 3:51Speaker 1: long she was so worried about a size that she
- 3:53Speaker 1: should be, or a number on a scale, that she
- 3:56Speaker 1: wasn't really feeling at home in her body. And when
- 3:59Speaker 1: she sellslebrated herself, she celebrated her size. She truly felt
- 4:03Speaker 1: like she had the opportunity to be the best version
- 4:07Speaker 1: of herself. So we talk all about that journey and
- 4:10Speaker 1: the emotions that come with it. We talk about how
- 4:13Speaker 1: Megababe came to be if we chat about the make
- 4:16Speaker 1: My Size movement that she started on Instagram and her
- 4:19Speaker 1: blog where she essentially challenges big name designers to.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Do just that make her size.
- 4:25Speaker 1: We also talk about her adorable dogs, and we even
- 4:29Speaker 1: hit a little bit on the dating life front, something
- 4:32Speaker 1: that I don't necessarily love to talk about all of us.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I a huge thanks to my friends at Moss for
- 4:38Speaker 1: the recording space, and as always, you guys know the
- 4:40Speaker 1: drill at Emily Body at Hurdle podcast. If you have
- 4:44Speaker 1: a hurdle moment of your own to share you just
- 4:46Speaker 1: want to say hi, feel free to reach out to
- 4:48Speaker 1: me over email. It's Emily at Hurdle dot us. It's
- 4:53Speaker 1: hard to believe that this thing is almost two years
- 4:56Speaker 1: and one hundred episodes in, but that December twenty seventh
- 4:59Speaker 1: birthday is coming up, and in order for me to
- 5:02Speaker 1: keep building and working on this podcast, I just would appreciate.
- 5:05Speaker 1: When you're done listening today, make sure to share this
- 5:09Speaker 1: episode with a friend and with that, let's get to hurdling.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Today.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I'm sitting down with Katie Strino.
- 5:24Speaker 1: She is a body positive activist that sounds so jazzy
- 5:27Speaker 1: and also the founder of Megababe.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Hi.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Hello, it's so lovely to have you here.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Like you walked into the studio and you're just a
- 5:35Speaker 1: ray of light in super cozy sweatpants.
- 5:37Speaker 3: That's because I think you look like Megan Markle and
- 5:40Speaker 3: I don't think any I don't think anything could go
- 5:42Speaker 3: wrong after someone says.
- 5:43Speaker 1: That someone told me once that I looked like an
- 5:45Speaker 1: actress that used to be in Smallville, but I don't
- 5:48Speaker 1: recall her name I don't know. Okay, so we're just
- 5:51Speaker 1: gonna roll with Megan Markle.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, go with Megan Markle, who also like could have
- 5:55Speaker 3: been on Smallville perfect but she wasn't. But I mean,
- 5:57Speaker 3: you know, I man, she's like kind of a medium
- 5:59Speaker 3: actor and then she just is the queen of everything now.
- 6:03Speaker 2: The queen of everything. Okay, So talk to me a
- 6:05Speaker 2: little bit about what it.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Means to be a body positive activist because just now
- 6:11Speaker 1: when we sat down, I said, what do you describe
- 6:12Speaker 1: yourself as?
- 6:13Speaker 2: And this is what we came up with.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Basically, I have an Instagram account where I promote body
- 6:20Speaker 3: neutrality and helping women through through like their body journey.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And also we look at clothes and we look at
- 6:27Speaker 3: like dog adoption and things in my everyday life. But
- 6:30Speaker 3: that's how it started out. It really is about helping
- 6:33Speaker 3: women find their way, like to accept themselves.
- 6:37Speaker 1: So let's rewind it back a little bit. Tell me
- 6:39Speaker 1: about growing up. Where did you grow up?
- 6:42Speaker 3: I grew up in Wisconsin, in Whitefisher Bay, Wisconsin, which
- 6:45Speaker 3: is right outside of Milwaukee.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Right outside Milwaukee.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Okay, and growing up, did you have your fair share
- 6:51Speaker 1: of body image issues? Because I'll let you in on
- 6:54Speaker 1: a little like well known secret. I definitely definitely did.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I did you know? I did. I was five eleven
- 7:03Speaker 3: and just like bigger than everyone else.
- 7:06Speaker 2: You are pretty tall, right, yeah, yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Just like just bigger. And I think I from a
- 7:11Speaker 3: young age, like I wanted to be the tiny little
- 7:15Speaker 3: girl who was so delicate and dainty, and I was
- 7:18Speaker 3: just always like a full grown adult for the minute
- 7:21Speaker 3: I was poor. So I don't know, it's been such
- 7:25Speaker 3: a journey between like those feelings of wanting to be
- 7:29Speaker 3: smaller and then where I am now. It's it's such
- 7:33Speaker 3: a difference because I think that my entire life was
- 7:35Speaker 3: dominated by this mental conversation about weight and wanting to
- 7:42Speaker 3: you know, why did you eat that? You shouldn't have
- 7:44Speaker 3: gone to You should have gone to the gym, you
- 7:46Speaker 3: shouldn't have done this. Like there's just this, especially women,
- 7:49Speaker 3: I feel have this like constant negative ticker in their head.
- 7:52Speaker 3: And I feel like I've gone I've transcended that a
- 7:56Speaker 3: little bit, which has which has made all the difference
- 8:00Speaker 3: in like clearing up space just to.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Live, yeah, totally.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And I mean I can only imagine now like feeling
- 8:06Speaker 1: more at peace and taking up this space.
- 8:09Speaker 2: But especially growing up for.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Me in high school, the amount of issues I had
- 8:16Speaker 1: about just like being myself but feeling really uncomfortable in
- 8:19Speaker 1: my own body. I have talked about this on the
- 8:22Speaker 1: podcast before, but I lost seventy pounds in college, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: so I've run the gamut in terms of like where
- 8:28Speaker 1: I could shop, where I couldn't shop, feeling okay in
- 8:30Speaker 1: my body, not feeling okay with my body, being a
- 8:32Speaker 1: smaller human but.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Still like not feeling okay.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and understanding that just because I went through this
- 8:39Speaker 1: major transformation, if I'm critical of myself, it doesn't mean
- 8:42Speaker 1: that I'm not appreciative of it.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It just means that I'm human.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Right. Well, Also, I think it's interesting because you lost
- 8:48Speaker 3: seventy pounds. I gained seventy pounds, and I find it
- 8:52Speaker 3: to be like a really interesting journey because you find
- 8:54Speaker 3: out it's not about the number on the scale.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Right right, Yeah, Yeah, totally.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah, So talk to me about what you were going through,
- 9:01Speaker 1: what kind of triggered this weight for you.
- 9:05Speaker 3: I got a divorce in well, I've always been gaining weight,
- 9:09Speaker 3: I think my entire life. I was ten years old
- 9:12Speaker 3: at the doctor and they told me I was too
- 9:14Speaker 3: big in there and right, and you're talking to a
- 9:18Speaker 3: little kid like that, and then that's when like diet
- 9:20Speaker 3: culture starts when you're little, and then it just continues
- 9:24Speaker 3: on right, Like I think it's so it's so interesting
- 9:28Speaker 3: because I'll sit down for I'll go home, or i'll
- 9:30Speaker 3: like talk to family, or I'll like be in a
- 9:32Speaker 3: group of women and the topic of weight loss comes
- 9:35Speaker 3: up so quickly. Yeah, and I'm like, what why are
- 9:38Speaker 3: we talking about this? Like do we have anything better
- 9:40Speaker 3: that we can like talk about here? But yeah, I
- 9:44Speaker 3: got a divorce and that triggered probably the biggest weight
- 9:48Speaker 3: gain I had had, which yeah, was like seventy pounds.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Were you leaning into food as a comfort or did
- 9:55Speaker 1: you feel like for me, like, I have always looked
- 9:59Speaker 1: at food as a comfort thing. And that's I think
- 10:03Speaker 1: still where I have some of these issues. I was
- 10:05Speaker 1: actually having a conversation with someone last night and I said,
- 10:08Speaker 1: it's so interesting because I thought of food is comfort,
- 10:11Speaker 1: but then after it, I would still feel so uncomfortable
- 10:15Speaker 1: that it's like why did I even view it that way?
- 10:17Speaker 3: I honestly, the weight gain, I have to tell you,
- 10:20Speaker 3: I have no I mean, obviously it's it's math and science.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Like you, you obviously took in more calories than you
- 10:27Speaker 3: put out, But I think I I probably I definitely
- 10:32Speaker 3: know I didn't. Probably I definitely leaned into food, but
- 10:35Speaker 3: not in a way. I guess. I never talked about
- 10:38Speaker 3: how did I gain this weight. I think I stopped exercising.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I was not am I gonna say underweight, but like
- 10:45Speaker 3: I definitely was like pushing the thinnest part for my frame. Yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 3: when I started gaining weight, So like I definitely probably
- 10:55Speaker 3: let myself be more of my natural frame weight.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Did you feel like at the time when you were
- 11:04Speaker 1: like pushing this thinner frame, did you feel pressure.
- 11:07Speaker 3: To the time in my whole life? Yeah, yes, like
- 11:10Speaker 3: I was, I was like ated twelve, a size twelve,
- 11:13Speaker 3: and that was hard to maintain. Yeah, hard to maintain always,
- 11:20Speaker 3: you know what I mean. Yeah, Like it just didn't
- 11:22Speaker 3: ever feel like that was like my natural shape. I
- 11:26Speaker 3: don't know what were.
- 11:28Speaker 2: You into activity wise at that time, Like what'd you
- 11:30Speaker 2: like to do?
- 11:30Speaker 3: Oh? I mean I was a rower in college, so
- 11:33Speaker 3: I rode I rode crew at Wisconsin, and I played
- 11:36Speaker 3: volleyball in high school and I have always been into
- 11:41Speaker 3: physical fitness activities. I ran a marathon in two thousand
- 11:45Speaker 3: and six. Like, I am always into exercise, but I
- 11:49Speaker 3: think in the past, like I think I've had a
- 11:52Speaker 3: hard time getting back into a consistent routine with exercise
- 11:57Speaker 3: right right, that has definitely been something that I've not
- 11:59Speaker 3: been able to do for probably now that I've been
- 12:02Speaker 3: talking about it, probably like ten years. Okay, consistent. So
- 12:05Speaker 3: that comes down to eating. So you're it's like really
- 12:08Speaker 3: going down to like are you like skipping a meal
- 12:10Speaker 3: and stuff like that, and those are the kind of
- 12:12Speaker 3: tricks I was doing with myself.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Interesting, Okay, So when you get divorced and you're starting
- 12:18Speaker 1: to gain weight, you're actually in this process. People talk
- 12:20Speaker 1: about gaining weight and they're like, oh, but like you
- 12:23Speaker 1: are coming into your own almostly.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, So talk to me about how that feels.
- 12:27Speaker 3: The weight really wasn't a burden to me, and I
- 12:30Speaker 3: didn't even look at it like that because I think
- 12:32Speaker 3: I was gaining so much freedom. It's almost like my
- 12:35Speaker 3: body became secondary. I was just like feeling myself like
- 12:39Speaker 3: I had felt bad for so long, and I was
- 12:42Speaker 3: my quote unquote ideal body weight and size, but I
- 12:46Speaker 3: just I felt awful. And then I started to like
- 12:48Speaker 3: gain this weight because I was I was becoming more
- 12:51Speaker 3: comfortable with myself.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I love you, told Glamour.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I became a slice sixteen, which I still am, and
- 12:57Speaker 1: a surprising thing happened.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I really loved my body.
- 13:00Speaker 1: During my marriage, I spent so much time worrying about everything,
- 13:03Speaker 1: but then the relationship ended and it didn't matter. My
- 13:05Speaker 1: fear of having something to lose was gone, and I
- 13:08Speaker 1: kind of said, efit, I was gonna wear jeans shorts
- 13:11Speaker 1: if I wanted to and embrace my body.
- 13:14Speaker 3: That's exactly it. Yeah, the thing I said it better
- 13:17Speaker 3: than I can right now, but.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Always is like that in the moment.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I really I feel like I truly was
- 13:26Speaker 3: so uncomfortable and I was always doubting myself and covering up.
- 13:29Speaker 3: And it was the same thing I was basically back
- 13:32Speaker 3: in third grade. I was inundated with like tiny girls
- 13:35Speaker 3: who I felt insecure around, and like, now that doesn't
- 13:38Speaker 3: bother me anymore, but at the time it used to
- 13:42Speaker 3: just shred me.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Right now, so you're like giving back to yourself by
- 13:46Speaker 1: being okay with gaining weight, But what else are you
- 13:49Speaker 1: doing during this time to kind of give back to
- 13:51Speaker 1: you because emotionally, I'm sure, like it's so difficult.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I'm definitely in therapy, Like twice a week, I did
- 13:59Speaker 3: a lot of like who are you? And like what
- 14:01Speaker 3: do you want here? Because I think I had spent
- 14:03Speaker 3: so long setting up this house of cards, if that's
- 14:07Speaker 3: the right term, where I just I was every day
- 14:13Speaker 3: like being so careful and egg shelley to make sure that,
- 14:16Speaker 3: like my life didn't fall apart. And then when it
- 14:19Speaker 3: fell apart, I was like, Okay, well, I guess that
- 14:22Speaker 3: doesn't work. Let's find out like what's really there, Like
- 14:25Speaker 3: what do you really want? What do you really want
- 14:27Speaker 3: to do here? And like what's holding you back? Because
- 14:31Speaker 3: the things that you were being held back by are gone,
- 14:34Speaker 3: and like you can crumble and you can shut it down.
- 14:38Speaker 3: And my my friend looked at me like six months
- 14:41Speaker 3: out and she was like, she was like, I'm really
- 14:44Speaker 3: proud of you. Like you could have just packed it up,
- 14:46Speaker 3: head back to Milwaukee and just like started over, and
- 14:50Speaker 3: you were like, no, I'll start over in a different way.
- 14:54Speaker 2: So give me a timeline. When is this happenings.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Happened about three and a half years ago.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Okay three and a half years ago.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Actually, it'll be I think it's three years in January. Okay,
- 15:03Speaker 3: so it feels like ten years ago.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Like another life's time.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Well, I feel like essentially, after something like this happens,
- 15:11Speaker 1: I was gonna say, well, after a big traumatic event happens,
- 15:13Speaker 1: it's like you have the opportunity almost to be reborn. Yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and you get to choose whether you're going to live
- 15:20Speaker 1: in the past or accept what has happened, take that
- 15:22Speaker 1: and move forward and do what you can with what
- 15:25Speaker 1: you have. Getting to that point though, is really damn hard. Yeah,
- 15:29Speaker 1: where you're like all right, like I'm gonna accept my
- 15:32Speaker 1: circumstances and do the best I can with what I have.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yeah, that's exactly it is. You can make a choice
- 15:37Speaker 3: and you can just like lay down. And that was
- 15:40Speaker 3: another thing, Like when I found out I was getting divorced,
- 15:44Speaker 3: I didn't fight it. I just was like, Okay, like
- 15:47Speaker 3: this is happening, let's do it. Because and I think
- 15:51Speaker 3: I witnessed from a lot of people and everyone has
- 15:53Speaker 3: their own journey, but when a relationship ends, I think
- 15:56Speaker 3: people can spend a year or five fighting it and
- 16:01Speaker 3: just being like what happened, Like this would happened, And
- 16:04Speaker 3: I think I just I just started to move on
- 16:06Speaker 3: right away, and that was the choice that I consciously made.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I was like, we are this is.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Done right, Yeah, what are you doing in your career
- 16:12Speaker 1: at this point?
- 16:13Speaker 3: I'm just starting to focus more on the twelveish style,
- 16:17Speaker 3: which was my blog. I had not started megababe, and
- 16:20Speaker 3: I was still doing dog stuff because my dog Toast.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Her instagram was Toast meets World, and I would say
- 16:28Speaker 3: I did like half my time doing dog stuff and
- 16:31Speaker 3: half my time doing the blog.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Okay, so let's dive into both of these things a
- 16:35Speaker 1: little bit first. I mean I have to dive into
- 16:37Speaker 1: Toast first. For the people who don't know Toast, talk
- 16:41Speaker 1: to me about time. She was very famous. She got
- 16:44Speaker 1: married on Real Housewives of New York, she wrote a
- 16:47Speaker 1: book called Toast Hampton, and she passed away about it'll
- 16:52Speaker 1: be two years ago this month. The dog like legacy
- 16:57Speaker 1: that she left is pretty major. We still in the account.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I still have three dogs, Muppet, Cheese, and Crumb. They're
- 17:03Speaker 1: all rescues. We talked about puppy Mill rescue all the
- 17:06Speaker 1: time and why you shouldn't buy a dog from a
- 17:07Speaker 1: pet store. You can go to the account and find
- 17:10Speaker 1: out about it if you have any questions.
- 17:12Speaker 3: But yeah, like the dog thing was really special and
- 17:16Speaker 3: brought out my inner Chris Jenner, I'm very much like
- 17:20Speaker 3: a very intense doggager.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Doggager.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yes, I just had to take We were doing a
- 17:24Speaker 3: project for Petco and I just was taking some photos
- 17:26Speaker 3: outside and someone was like standing next to me taking
- 17:29Speaker 3: photos of the dog, and I'm like, excuse me, can
- 17:31Speaker 3: you move? Can you please move?
- 17:32Speaker 2: Also, Toast was well known for toasts tongue.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah, her tongue. She had no teeth.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Was that a credential in finding your new dogs?
- 17:39Speaker 3: No, it's just male dogs, puppy mal dogs often have
- 17:43Speaker 3: like bad teeth so they're rotted out and so their
- 17:45Speaker 3: tongue sticks out. But yeah, we just celebrated Cheese's birthday yesterday.
- 17:50Speaker 2: These names though, yeah, like what's the.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I don't know underpants. She was our Japanese chin. She
- 17:57Speaker 3: passed away, And it's hard sometimes when you rest, you
- 18:00Speaker 3: seen your dogs or older dogs are not with you
- 18:03Speaker 3: as long. But like it doesn't mean the life that
- 18:05Speaker 3: they're that they have with you is not special and amazing.
- 18:07Speaker 3: So we've had to say go back to three of
- 18:09Speaker 3: them in the past couple of years.
- 18:11Speaker 2: All right, well, then bring me now to the twelve
- 18:13Speaker 2: ish style.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I started the again. I started this Instagram because I
- 18:18Speaker 3: was on a shoot with Toast at Nars with Man Repeller.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I know Toast really very cool life. So she was
- 18:26Speaker 3: doing a Nars shoot and the Man Repeller girls were like, hey,
- 18:29Speaker 3: you have good style, like we should feature you how
- 18:32Speaker 3: to dress like Kirby body Style. And I was likema, like,
- 18:37Speaker 3: no one ever talks about me. So I was like, yeah,
- 18:41Speaker 3: I'd love to do that. And we did this shoot
- 18:43Speaker 3: and then I read the comments afterwards and I was like, wow,
- 18:46Speaker 3: like people are really celebrating seeing a body that they
- 18:50Speaker 3: can identify with on the Internet. And I took a
- 18:53Speaker 3: look round and I didn't see anyone who was like
- 18:55Speaker 3: representing fashion in a way I would, and I decided
- 18:59Speaker 3: to start. So I really started out targeting women who
- 19:02Speaker 3: kind of were in this size purgatory where they didn't
- 19:04Speaker 3: really identify with plus, they didn't identify with straight. And
- 19:07Speaker 3: things have changed so much from when I started to now,
- 19:11Speaker 3: just like even the way I talk to women, I'm
- 19:13Speaker 3: not talking to a specific size anymore. I'm just trying
- 19:17Speaker 3: to talk about size inclusion. I'm talking to women who
- 19:20Speaker 3: feel like they've been left out of the fashion game,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and I'm talking to women of all sizes about body acceptance.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Was it hard at first to see yourself on the
- 19:28Speaker 1: other side of the campra awkward?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yeah, let's talk about that.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like you're like, first of all, who wants
- 19:34Speaker 3: to see this? Like who cares? I really had. That
- 19:38Speaker 3: was my biggest up, I said it. This was my
- 19:41Speaker 3: biggest hurdle was that I had to get over the
- 19:44Speaker 3: fact that, like I was putting myself out there for
- 19:46Speaker 3: people to judge.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And you were just doing it because you wanted to,
- 19:50Speaker 1: not necessarily because of any feedback that you would get.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Although I can totally relate to your sentiment about seeing
- 19:56Speaker 1: the comments and seeing that it has the you have
- 19:59Speaker 1: the opportunity to impact people in a positive way.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Yes, And that was a really that was a big
- 20:04Speaker 3: deal because I was like, yeah, I also would like
- 20:06Speaker 3: to see some people who are like a size twelve
- 20:08Speaker 3: and above featured places, right, yeah, so, and I was like,
- 20:11Speaker 3: so why not me? But it really was. It took
- 20:14Speaker 3: me about a year to get comfortable even like just
- 20:18Speaker 3: taking like selfies and like everything, Like I was like
- 20:21Speaker 3: this is so douchey, like I just had I had
- 20:24Speaker 3: to get over it. Yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I remember, like in college when I look at photos
- 20:27Speaker 1: of myself when I wasn't personally happy regardless of my size.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I looked at photos and they were just like selviies
- 20:32Speaker 1: of my face because I was frightened to show the
- 20:35Speaker 1: world like my body.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Yes, I talked to women a lot actually about that.
- 20:39Speaker 3: On their dating profiles really, or on their not just
- 20:42Speaker 3: their dating profiles, but their social media profiles. You can
- 20:45Speaker 3: tell someone is uncomfortable with their body because they're never
- 20:47Speaker 3: showing it. They're showing the tightest face shot you can imagine.
- 20:51Speaker 3: And then like pet photos, home photos, food photos, but
- 20:55Speaker 3: like they're like, I'm still struggling with my body confidence
- 20:58Speaker 3: and I'm like, girl, I can see it right there.
- 21:00Speaker 3: You won't show me your body, You're hiding it.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yeah, And I'm sure. I mean fast forward today.
- 21:05Speaker 1: The amount of people that you interact with on so
- 21:08Speaker 1: many levels about all of these issues and these insecurities,
- 21:12Speaker 1: it must.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Be it's a lot. And I do I answer. I
- 21:15Speaker 3: try to answer all my dms, and that's where I
- 21:18Speaker 3: get a lot of my most meaningful and impactful messages
- 21:21Speaker 3: I'm sure this is true for you too. Yeah, and
- 21:24Speaker 3: you just you realize that you have the ability to
- 21:27Speaker 3: make a difference in someone's day. You're like whatever it
- 21:30Speaker 3: is feeling about themselves, like inspiration can come from anywhere,
- 21:34Speaker 3: and to think that we can't be helpful on someone's
- 21:38Speaker 3: life journey is something that I had to get over
- 21:41Speaker 3: because we have the ability to do that.
- 21:44Speaker 1: So when does the twelve ish style grow from just
- 21:47Speaker 1: kind of like you taking a few photos to really
- 21:50Speaker 1: gaining a following.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I think that that was it. Really again, it took
- 21:54Speaker 3: about a year and after I think I got comfortable
- 21:56Speaker 3: with myself I started talking because there was a different
- 22:00Speaker 3: from like, hey, you can like here's some clothing hacks
- 22:02Speaker 3: and how to get dressed, and here's like here I
- 22:04Speaker 3: am and like Jeene shorts. There's a difference between that
- 22:07Speaker 3: and really understanding that, like there is no destination with
- 22:12Speaker 3: size and that like opening the conversation up to women
- 22:15Speaker 3: and being like, girl, this is not like this is
- 22:18Speaker 3: never gonna end, right, Like you keep going and going
- 22:22Speaker 3: and you'll be a zero and you're still looking in
- 22:25Speaker 3: the mirror and being like I hate myself.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's not the goal here no, so more
- 22:30Speaker 1: and more people are following and it's growing.
- 22:32Speaker 3: It's growing. I'm having a really good time, and then
- 22:37Speaker 3: I'm like, fuck, I can't find a thigh chaf stick
- 22:41Speaker 3: that I like. There's nothing on the market that is
- 22:45Speaker 3: for women. There's nothing. And every time I talked about
- 22:48Speaker 3: thigh chaf on my stories or on my feed, it
- 22:50Speaker 3: was one of the most engaged things. So I was like,
- 22:52Speaker 3: I definitely there's definitely people out there that have it.
- 22:55Speaker 3: I'm just unclear why I'm looking at D's nuts for
- 22:59Speaker 3: her and there's nothing out there, like that's just a
- 23:02Speaker 3: product for ladies.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Have I never heard of that product?
- 23:05Speaker 3: These nuts for her? Because why would you? Why would
- 23:07Speaker 3: any why why would you make that product? So I
- 23:10Speaker 3: was I was talking to my sister and I was like,
- 23:14Speaker 3: you know what, I don't know how to do this.
- 23:17Speaker 3: I've never made anything in my life, but I want
- 23:19Speaker 3: to look into making my own thigh chaf stick. And
- 23:22Speaker 3: she was like I'm in and then I and then
- 23:25Speaker 3: I talked to my best friend out in San Francisco
- 23:27Speaker 3: and I was like, we're going to do this, Like
- 23:29Speaker 3: do you want to do this with us? And she
- 23:30Speaker 3: was like yeah, I do. So while we were solving
- 23:34Speaker 3: thigh chaf we figured maybe we should develop a second
- 23:37Speaker 3: product to help tackle another issue. So I took on
- 23:40Speaker 3: boob Sweat, which is the name of my podcast, And
- 23:44Speaker 3: so we made a bust dust, which is a telch free,
- 23:48Speaker 3: hands free powder for boob sweat, and they sold out.
- 23:53Speaker 3: We launched it. We had no idea what was going on.
- 23:56Speaker 3: We didn't know how to buy the quantities. We just
- 24:00Speaker 3: like directing consumer, put it up on the website, put
- 24:02Speaker 3: it up on my Instagram, and we sold thousands and
- 24:05Speaker 3: thousands and thousands of units in a month.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Did was the testing for that? Like insane testing? Yeah?
- 24:12Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 24:12Speaker 1: I mean, like, how many varieties of boob sweat power
- 24:17Speaker 1: did we follow through a lot?
- 24:18Speaker 2: We went through a lot before we were like this
- 24:20Speaker 2: is yes.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah, we're fussy ducks. So it's like, scent is really important.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Can't be too strong, can't be gross, can't give you
- 24:26Speaker 3: a headache? Like right, it's and the performance with our
- 24:30Speaker 3: thigh rescue is the best. It's the best I'll put
- 24:34Speaker 3: our thigh Rescue. Fine, you don't want to use our deodorant,
- 24:36Speaker 3: you don't want to use boob sweat, I mean buzz
- 24:38Speaker 3: das fine, but if you have thigh chafe, it is.
- 24:42Speaker 3: It is the best thigh chaf stick on the market.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I actually wrote about Rosie Pits for Cosmo like a
- 24:48Speaker 1: year Yes you did, Yes, And it's just like I
- 24:51Speaker 1: remember and spoiler, Rosie Pits is the deodorant that's in
- 24:54Speaker 1: the Megababe line.
- 24:55Speaker 2: And I remember that.
- 24:56Speaker 1: I was sitting at a bar once and I was like, Wow,
- 24:58Speaker 1: it's smell so nice in here, and then I realized
- 24:59Speaker 1: that it is literally me armpits. Yeah, it's fine.
- 25:03Speaker 2: It just literally smells like ros today.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Literally I was like, did I put yodor onund? But
- 25:08Speaker 3: I don't think it did, because I don't smell the
- 25:09Speaker 3: Rosy pits. I just smelled my armpit for the people
- 25:12Speaker 3: at home.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah, hope you enjoying it.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Are you still using Rosie Pits?
- 25:15Speaker 2: I definitely have it in the rotation.
- 25:18Speaker 3: What else are you using?
- 25:19Speaker 2: Probably like a secret.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Oh you go back to aluminum?
- 25:22Speaker 2: I do.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I'm not like a strict all natural fiend, but I
- 25:26Speaker 1: go back and forth. I think it's like literally like
- 25:28Speaker 1: which one is in closer reach at the time?
- 25:30Speaker 3: Got it? Got it?
- 25:31Speaker 2: Doing some market research?
- 25:33Speaker 3: Of course, I'm really happy to hear though that it's
- 25:35Speaker 3: still in the rotation.
- 25:36Speaker 1: But I mean, that's kind of crazy to think that
- 25:38Speaker 1: you made this product to solve a personal issue and
- 25:41Speaker 1: then all of a sudden it's literally selling out everywhere.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that was really crazy, and it was like unexpected
- 25:49Speaker 3: and expected all at the same time. Like I was like, yeah, duh,
- 25:52Speaker 3: everyone's got thy shaped, But also I was like, what
- 25:54Speaker 3: people have thigh chafe? And then it went into like
- 25:57Speaker 3: why doesn't anyone talk about thy chafe? And then talking
- 26:00Speaker 3: to the media about it, and how it still is
- 26:04Speaker 3: very much something that people whisper about it. Like I'll
- 26:06Speaker 3: be walking down the sidewalk and someone will like stop
- 26:09Speaker 3: me on the big thank you so much I have,
- 26:12Speaker 3: and I'm like, yeah, it's okay. So I think it's
- 26:15Speaker 3: it's that messaging around your thighs rub. That's a pretty normal,
- 26:20Speaker 3: average issue that we deal with that we don't address
- 26:23Speaker 3: in the beauty industry, and in fact, what we're pushed
- 26:26Speaker 3: towards in the fashion and beauty space is a thigh gap.
- 26:29Speaker 3: And if you don't have a thigh gap, then something's
- 26:33Speaker 3: wrong with you, And therefore a thigh chafe means like
- 26:36Speaker 3: something's really.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Wrong, right, right, yeah, but it's not. It was part
- 26:40Speaker 2: of life, just part of life. It's so interesting to me.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I mean the tenacity that you have to have to
- 26:45Speaker 1: admit and be very well like be very well versed
- 26:49Speaker 1: that I know absolutely nothing about how to do this
- 26:51Speaker 1: thing that I want to do, but I'm just gonna
- 26:53Speaker 1: go do it.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Yes, I don't. I we had never made a product
- 26:56Speaker 3: and that means my parents fulfilled the orders for two years.
- 27:01Speaker 3: So we're only we were just turning three. We're not
- 27:04Speaker 3: three yet. But but this summer we moved to a
- 27:06Speaker 3: fulfillment center. But we took everyone out of retirement and
- 27:10Speaker 3: we put them to work and they were shipping all
- 27:12Speaker 3: the orders. Big Alta trucks were backing up into my parents'
- 27:16Speaker 3: driveway and like they were like meeting with the delivery guys.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Like it was very very home It is still homegrown.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Like it's just it's still is just the four of
- 27:24Speaker 3: us and it's a lot of work. Wow, it's yeah,
- 27:30Speaker 3: because we're in every target now, every Alta.
- 27:32Speaker 1: And how do you manage that? Well, now you have
- 27:34Speaker 1: a fulfillment center. But it was like found a tender
- 27:36Speaker 1: for ship for shipments. But but we were we were
- 27:39Speaker 1: shipping target and Alto out of the garage up until
- 27:42Speaker 1: up until June.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Bless them.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Yeah, so I mean talk about a supportive foundation though, yes,
- 27:50Speaker 1: like literally your parents.
- 27:52Speaker 3: I know they yeah, they really they took it on.
- 27:55Speaker 3: I think that they were excited to be involved in
- 27:59Speaker 3: something that's to be big and growing and that was
- 28:02Speaker 3: like working right.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Yeah, right, all right.
- 28:04Speaker 1: So something we haven't really talked much about yet is, yes,
- 28:08Speaker 1: you are like supportive of women at all sizes, whatever
- 28:10Speaker 1: that might be. But you're also doing something on your
- 28:13Speaker 1: social media that a lot of people are really drawn to,
- 28:15Speaker 1: which is the Make My Size movement. Yes, so let's
- 28:18Speaker 1: talk about the Make my Size movement.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Yeah, Make my Size is basically it was just born
- 28:22Speaker 3: out of frustration for me shopping because, as you have
- 28:26Speaker 3: heard in this podcast, I gained weight and that means
- 28:28Speaker 3: that I couldn't shop at certain stores anymore or with
- 28:31Speaker 3: certain designers anymore. And if I thought it was hard
- 28:34Speaker 3: to find clothes at a twelve fourteen, at a sixteen
- 28:37Speaker 3: eighteen twenty girl, you cannot find anything. So I I
- 28:43Speaker 3: was pissed. I'm like, I had an order from Netaporte,
- 28:48Speaker 3: which I never know how to say.
- 28:50Speaker 1: I feel like that's right, Okay, what do you think, Like,
- 28:53Speaker 1: what's the other porter that's like such an americanized version
- 28:56Speaker 1: of it.
- 28:57Speaker 3: It's Netaporte.
- 28:58Speaker 2: I support it, Yeah, thank you.
- 28:59Speaker 3: So I had an order from them, and I was
- 29:01Speaker 3: thinking that the third there was a third delivery that
- 29:03Speaker 3: I had gotten from them where nothing was going to
- 29:06Speaker 3: fit again. And I had ordered all like the double
- 29:09Speaker 3: x's and like the size fifties and the biggest size
- 29:11Speaker 3: that they were making. And it's so funny because brands
- 29:15Speaker 3: will look at my Instagram and they'll be like, we
- 29:17Speaker 3: can dress you, let's send you stuff, and I'm like,
- 29:20Speaker 3: I'll go to their website and they stop at at
- 29:21Speaker 3: fourteen and I'm like, you don't, I can't fit into
- 29:24Speaker 3: your clothes and they're like yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no
- 29:26Speaker 3: that kind of thing. So what I did is I
- 29:29Speaker 3: took a photo and I posted so the brand. I
- 29:31Speaker 3: think the first thing I at, the first one I
- 29:33Speaker 3: called that was DVF. I said, this is this is
- 29:36Speaker 3: like a beautiful skirt. I'd love to wear it, and
- 29:38Speaker 3: this is how far away it is from fitting me.
- 29:41Speaker 3: And I think I do make my size because I
- 29:45Speaker 3: want to alert brands that a they're missing out on
- 29:47Speaker 3: an audience. Be the big sizes that everyone who's sitting
- 29:51Speaker 3: in the boardroom, who's like making decisions, those sizes that
- 29:54Speaker 3: they think are like we're servicing the community, they're not.
- 29:58Speaker 3: And I want to it in a positive way so
- 30:01Speaker 3: that people aren't turned off and they're not. I'm not
- 30:03Speaker 3: like this sucks, like boycott them. No, I don't want
- 30:06Speaker 3: you to boycott them. I just want this brand to
- 30:08Speaker 3: know that, like people want to shop them?
- 30:10Speaker 1: Right what happens after that first post, because I almost
- 30:13Speaker 1: feel as though kind of putting that up would be
- 30:15Speaker 1: a little bit scary.
- 30:16Speaker 2: To be honest, you don't want to burn any bridges.
- 30:18Speaker 2: You don't want anyone to be a man again.
- 30:20Speaker 1: You're talking that you want to just you know, put
- 30:23Speaker 1: some awareness into the world.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Yeah, that is exactly it. As a quote unquote fashion blogger,
- 30:28Speaker 3: you do not call out brands unless you want to
- 30:30Speaker 3: be known as like a like the call out queen
- 30:33Speaker 3: or like an angry blogger. So basically it was it
- 30:38Speaker 3: was very scary, and I was like, our brand's gonna
- 30:40Speaker 3: not want to work with me, like this is this
- 30:42Speaker 3: is I don't know, it was like career suicide. But
- 30:45Speaker 3: then uh, the response from the audience again, like it
- 30:49Speaker 3: was the intention behind it. The intention wasn't to shame
- 30:52Speaker 3: the brand and to like disgrace them the attention, the
- 30:55Speaker 3: intention is to bring awareness, and the people felt that
- 30:59Speaker 3: they felt seen for every woman who's gone into Club
- 31:01Speaker 3: Monaco and like not been able to put anything on, Like,
- 31:06Speaker 3: that's that's who I'm doing this for.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Right, So what happens on the brand side, Well, DVF
- 31:13Speaker 1: is a great example.
- 31:15Speaker 3: They launched a capsule collection of rap dresses with eleven
- 31:20Speaker 3: Hona Ray this fall. So I mean we're talking, we're
- 31:25Speaker 3: talking a year later, right, that's amazing, right, Like for
- 31:29Speaker 3: that kind of turnaround, you've got brands like Veronica Beard
- 31:32Speaker 3: who like they listen, they heard, and they are killing it.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Tanya Taylor, I never didn't make my size on her.
- 31:40Speaker 3: She just like felt passionate about making extended sizes. Like
- 31:43Speaker 3: she's making beautiful clothes that women of all sizes can
- 31:47Speaker 3: wear and it's getting noticed.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Also, the thing that can be a bit of a
- 31:50Speaker 1: struggle is then like sometimes the price increasing for bigger
- 31:53Speaker 1: sizes of clothing.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I've never understood that. I didn't even know it
- 31:56Speaker 3: was a real thing. And then actually, my friend Ryan
- 31:59Speaker 3: who does he has a blog called Extra Extra Style.
- 32:02Speaker 3: He just posted a Ralph lawrencewater that was like fifty
- 32:06Speaker 3: bucks more in the bigger sizes. I just I didn't
- 32:09Speaker 3: think that was a real thing. Yeah, I'm sorry if
- 32:11Speaker 3: that sounds dumb, but like I really dumb. I really
- 32:14Speaker 3: didn't think that that was something brands were doing. Like, really,
- 32:17Speaker 3: you're going to charge for the extra fabric, then why
- 32:19Speaker 3: wouldn't you charge less for a double.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Zero a double zero?
- 32:23Speaker 3: Right?
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 32:24Speaker 1: It sounds like the brands are getting on board with
- 32:26Speaker 1: what you're doing. And I'm sure you're still probably getting
- 32:28Speaker 1: some of those emails from brands that want to dress
- 32:31Speaker 1: you but the clothing doesn't fit.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Yeah, how do you like? I work with that in
- 32:35Speaker 2: your head.
- 32:35Speaker 3: I try to be really polite and I'm just like
- 32:38Speaker 3: and I just let them know, like I'm like, hey, Mike,
- 32:42Speaker 3: like collection looks great. Unfortunately, like I wear size eighteen
- 32:46Speaker 3: twenty and you stop at a sixteen, right, or like
- 32:49Speaker 3: shoes ivo size twelve foot all the time people are like,
- 32:52Speaker 3: our shoes are so generously, like they're they're big, Like
- 32:55Speaker 3: we go up to a forty two, which is enough
- 32:58Speaker 3: of forty two is a ten. I mean everyone so
- 33:01Speaker 3: I but all the time I'm having to be like no, yeah, no,
- 33:05Speaker 3: that's not it. But I think politely letting them know
- 33:08Speaker 3: is much more impactful than like a deep shame.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I can only imagine how freeing this feels for you,
- 33:17Speaker 1: to just be so completely yourself.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Now. I am very free, maybe too free, as you mentioned,
- 33:26Speaker 3: I'm wearing fancy sweatpants right now. Like I just I
- 33:29Speaker 3: get to be I get to be me all the time,
- 33:33Speaker 3: and that is really I don't know how to describe that.
- 33:38Speaker 3: I wish that for everyone, right yeah, Like I just
- 33:43Speaker 3: want I feel so good that I'm able to do that.
- 33:47Speaker 1: And did you see that the way that you felt
- 33:51Speaker 1: about yourself kind of opened you up to possibilities?
- 33:54Speaker 3: Yes? Absolutely, because that's all that's I mean, that's Gabby
- 33:57Speaker 3: Bernstein super attractor kind of stuff, right, Like You're just
- 34:01Speaker 3: you're constantly feeling this positive energy about yourself. You're attracting
- 34:05Speaker 3: positive things, which attracts more positive things. It's just, it's
- 34:10Speaker 3: it's it's just it's available to everyone, but we often
- 34:15Speaker 3: get in our own way. Now, if I'm if I'm
- 34:18Speaker 3: another person, if I'm a different person. I'm walking in
- 34:21Speaker 3: here and I'm like, oh no, I had to shoot
- 34:24Speaker 3: this like fancy sweatsuit this morning, and I didn't change,
- 34:27Speaker 3: and now I look dumpy and now I look this
- 34:30Speaker 3: and like, there's this conversation that you could have, But
- 34:34Speaker 3: what is the.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Point right of that? Right?
- 34:37Speaker 3: Cute as hell?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like kind of like when someone compliments your
- 34:40Speaker 1: Target sweater and you feel like you need to be like,
- 34:43Speaker 1: oh my god, thinks it's from Target. But someone once
- 34:46Speaker 1: said to me, and I remember it was about an
- 34:48Speaker 1: item from Target, and I said, oh my god, thinks
- 34:50Speaker 1: it's from Target, because you.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Kind of like want to let them know.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, but she was like, next time, just saying
- 34:56Speaker 1: just try saying thank you, and then they're gonna be like, wow,
- 34:59Speaker 1: what a jet look at this. Yeah, not to disstart
- 35:02Speaker 1: that sweaters. I mean, there's great things, but I'm just saying, yeah,
- 35:05Speaker 1: it's kind of like the same vibe. And I mean,
- 35:07Speaker 1: obviously in your personal life this opened you up to
- 35:09Speaker 1: a whole new world with your now husband.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Yes, I think dating was really scary after I got
- 35:16Speaker 3: a divorce because I had not like I had been
- 35:18Speaker 3: with my ex husband for ten years, so I hadn't
- 35:21Speaker 3: ever done like dating apps, and I was really scared.
- 35:24Speaker 3: And then I was like, wait, this is awesome. I
- 35:27Speaker 3: can date from my couch because like, I don't go
- 35:30Speaker 3: to the bars, like I don't go to the club,
- 35:32Speaker 3: so I like didn't know how or where I was
- 35:35Speaker 3: going to meet people. And then I just I found dat.
- 35:39Speaker 3: I found dating apps to be very fun, frustrating at times,
- 35:43Speaker 3: scary at times, but also like just so much easier
- 35:47Speaker 3: to swipe while you're watching TV.
- 35:49Speaker 2: What's our go to dating app?
- 35:51Speaker 3: It was it was Bumball.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Okay, this is just what it's like to date in
- 35:55Speaker 2: New York. This is it.
- 35:57Speaker 3: I have to give you a big secret here. It's day.
- 35:59Speaker 3: It's Manhattan dating. Oh it's probably Brooklyn.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Are you telling me I should go to Brooklyn?
- 36:03Speaker 3: I think you should go. This is not twenty two
- 36:06Speaker 3: year old me would be like, shut up, but I'm
- 36:10Speaker 3: being serious. I think it's all about like it's about
- 36:13Speaker 3: smaller cities, it's about outer borough. It's about like it's
- 36:18Speaker 3: you gotta get out of Manhattan.
- 36:19Speaker 1: But that's why I've leaned off of the apps, because
- 36:23Speaker 1: I would rather like put my phone in my pocket,
- 36:25Speaker 1: take my AirPods out, and like be really freaking present
- 36:28Speaker 1: when I'm walking around and like try to make.
- 36:30Speaker 3: You can you can make you can make actually connections.
- 36:33Speaker 3: I'm an IRL connection.
- 36:34Speaker 2: I'm really working on an IRL connect.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Have you met anyone IRL?
- 36:38Speaker 1: Oh we're gonna have to talk about this off the pod, Okay,
- 36:43Speaker 1: I'll have to talk about this all.
- 36:44Speaker 3: I just want want to know that, Like when I
- 36:46Speaker 3: was single, I was it was like I was open
- 36:49Speaker 3: because it's all about the vibe you're putting off, right,
- 36:52Speaker 3: Like you can meet people anywhere.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Oh it's true.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't mean they're good or cool or they're
- 36:56Speaker 3: going to stick around. But you can meet people anywhere.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Oh you totally. I mean I will not.
- 37:01Speaker 1: I cannot count how many times people have tried just
- 37:04Speaker 1: to like come into the dms, but like maybe one
- 37:07Speaker 1: out of one hundred men that have ever done this,
- 37:11Speaker 1: like was someone that I would.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Actually want to entertain. You'll meet in the DM Oh yeah,
- 37:15Speaker 2: it's the new dating app. It's true, it's true. Okay,
- 37:18Speaker 2: So what in your life right now really excites you?
- 37:22Speaker 3: I would say, what excites me in my life right now? Megababe?
- 37:26Speaker 3: Every day?
- 37:27Speaker 2: How many products do we have going on Megababy?
- 37:29Speaker 1: We have eleven products right now, and there's men's product too.
- 37:33Speaker 3: Yeah, we launched two men's We launched like a dray Guy,
- 37:36Speaker 3: which is a ballpowder. We did a friction fighter for
- 37:40Speaker 3: for men for chafe.
- 37:41Speaker 1: What was the original men's product that you were like,
- 37:43Speaker 1: f this? What do you mean when you were like,
- 37:46Speaker 1: I don't want to use this nuts for her? Oh
- 37:48Speaker 1: well take that nuts for her?
- 37:50Speaker 3: Nos like and and I would say megababe. And I
- 37:55Speaker 3: love my husband a lot, even though that's not like
- 37:58Speaker 3: a professional pursuit. I'm just excited. Yeah, I really I
- 38:01Speaker 3: love him and m I don't know. Talking to ladies
- 38:08Speaker 3: in the DMS, it's exciting. Yeah, it's exciting. Everything's exciting.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Do you feel like there's been any single interaction over
- 38:15Speaker 1: the last like year or two that has literally just
- 38:18Speaker 1: blown you out of the water.
- 38:21Speaker 3: I would say I've been. I've I have a follower
- 38:24Speaker 3: who is in her fifties and she lives in Australia
- 38:27Speaker 3: and she's making like a total life change move. She's
- 38:31Speaker 3: moving to the States. Uh. And she credited me with
- 38:36Speaker 3: like the past basically four years of like everything transformation,
- 38:41Speaker 3: body acceptance, life acceptance, Like she's starting her life over
- 38:46Speaker 3: and it was amazing to hear that I had any impact.
- 38:50Speaker 2: On that blows it. It's mind blowing. I had.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I mean, I, as I mentioned, really struggled with my
- 38:56Speaker 1: size and body acceptance when I was in high school
- 38:58Speaker 1: and young in college. And and I have girls that
- 39:01Speaker 1: are in high school that reach out to me and
- 39:03Speaker 1: tell me that like I'm helping them understand like what they.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Are capable of. It literally, like nothing means more to
- 39:10Speaker 2: me in the world. Can I ask you?
- 39:11Speaker 3: Can I ask you a question?
- 39:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I do it.
- 39:12Speaker 3: So, how how do you deal with like weight conversations?
- 39:17Speaker 3: So if if if a seventeen year old reaches out
- 39:19Speaker 3: to you and is like, I'm like, I feel fat,
- 39:23Speaker 3: I feel this, I feel that, how do you do
- 39:26Speaker 3: you address weight? Or how do you how do you
- 39:29Speaker 3: address that?
- 39:30Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 39:30Speaker 1: So I think that the first question I ask is like,
- 39:35Speaker 1: how do you feel? Like, how do you feel in
- 39:36Speaker 1: your life? Are you happy? Are you unhappy? Are there
- 39:40Speaker 1: other things that are going on that contribute to this,
- 39:42Speaker 1: because obviously when you're a teenager, there's a ton of
- 39:45Speaker 1: things that are going on that are contributing to this,
- 39:47Speaker 1: especially now, like I'm so grateful and I'm sure you
- 39:50Speaker 1: are too, that we grew up when we did and
- 39:52Speaker 1: that social media was just not a thing because I
- 39:57Speaker 1: cannot imagine like.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Bullying and dealing with that.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but so many of the young women that reach
- 40:02Speaker 1: out to me like really do deal with bullying on
- 40:05Speaker 1: like a regular basis. So when it comes to like
- 40:08Speaker 1: them struggling with their weight, it's not a topic that
- 40:11Speaker 1: I get a lot from them. It's more just about
- 40:13Speaker 1: like self confidence, which is definitely something that I feel
- 40:16Speaker 1: like we can speak on together. But if it is
- 40:18Speaker 1: like a weight issue, it's just like I kind of
- 40:21Speaker 1: bring it back to my personal experience when I was
- 40:23Speaker 1: losing weight and why I was doing in it. For me,
- 40:25Speaker 1: it was never about like I want to lose seventy pounds.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It was about, like what can I do right now
- 40:30Speaker 1: in my life that's going to make me happier? And
- 40:33Speaker 1: for me like to be happier. I knew, like all right,
- 40:36Speaker 1: like I like banana chocolate chip ice cream, but like
- 40:38Speaker 1: eating it every day actually isn't making me happy at all.
- 40:41Speaker 1: It's making me feel really awful about myself and like
- 40:44Speaker 1: identifying the small things that I could change. Like one
- 40:46Speaker 1: of the young girls that reached out to me, she
- 40:49Speaker 1: was telling me that she was so worried about what
- 40:52Speaker 1: other people would think about her auditioning for the cross
- 40:55Speaker 1: or going out for the cross country team, that she
- 40:57Speaker 1: wasn't doing it, and she realized, like maybe I should
- 40:59Speaker 1: just like give it a whirl this year. And I
- 41:02Speaker 1: was just like, oh my God, like my hurt for you,
- 41:05Speaker 1: Like I'm so I'm just so honored that like what
- 41:08Speaker 1: I have been through and me being authentic and me
- 41:10Speaker 1: being open with you about what I've been through out
- 41:12Speaker 1: by none of it being perfect whatsoever, like that my
- 41:15Speaker 1: true story can help you just get through anything.
- 41:19Speaker 2: God am I lucky to have that opportunity. Yeah.
- 41:22Speaker 1: So, I mean when it comes to like weight and
- 41:24Speaker 1: young girls, like there's never probably like a right way
- 41:26Speaker 1: to tackle it. I weight cycled my entire adolescence. There
- 41:29Speaker 1: were times when I was sixteen and thin and teaching
- 41:32Speaker 1: like hip hop dance at a summer camp. And then
- 41:34Speaker 1: there's like me at eighteen, and I remember like a
- 41:36Speaker 1: photo of me in a mini golf course and like
- 41:38Speaker 1: a size eighteen gene from American Eagle, when like they
- 41:41Speaker 1: once made a size eighteen. So I like, I've been
- 41:46Speaker 1: all over the place and there's no like easy way
- 41:48Speaker 1: to talk to young women about weight loss. But I
- 41:50Speaker 1: think the best way and the most responsible way we
- 41:52Speaker 1: can do it, let's talk about how you feel and like,
- 41:55Speaker 1: what are some actionable like smart things that you can
- 41:58Speaker 1: do that are and helpful and can make you feel better? Like,
- 42:04Speaker 1: I think that's really important. Oh, thanks for coming to
- 42:07Speaker 1: my TED talk. Okay, so we're winding down here. People
- 42:11Speaker 1: come to your Instagram page all the time and they
- 42:13Speaker 1: see you living this like fabulous life. But when you
- 42:16Speaker 1: look in the mirror now, after everything that you've been through, Like.
- 42:19Speaker 2: What is it that you see looking back at you?
- 42:24Speaker 3: I see someone who's really happy.
- 42:28Speaker 1: I do beyond just this like feeling of happiness. Do
- 42:32Speaker 1: you feel confident? Do you feel secure? Where are you
- 42:35Speaker 1: at with that?
- 42:36Speaker 3: Yeah? I think I feel if they're sure, there are
- 42:38Speaker 3: things I feel insecure about every day, but it's not
- 42:42Speaker 3: my body. Yeah, And that's like a different plane to be.
- 42:45Speaker 1: On when it comes to the next few months, the
- 42:48Speaker 1: next year, Like what are the big things that are
- 42:50Speaker 1: coming down the pipe for you that you that you'll
- 42:52Speaker 1: let us into.
- 42:53Speaker 3: I don't know. I have I've got a couple more
- 42:55Speaker 3: collections coming out with stitch Fix and they're really effing cute.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Talk to me about that. What's Almo a stitch Fix?
- 43:02Speaker 3: I have a line with stitch Fix. We did we
- 43:04Speaker 3: just released the fall line and we did something really
- 43:08Speaker 3: cool this past summer. And I don't know, they're just
- 43:11Speaker 3: their clothes that I want to wear that I can't
- 43:13Speaker 3: really find still. So like I made like red riding
- 43:16Speaker 3: pants and that's something that I love, but like, they
- 43:20Speaker 3: don't make those really in my size. So I love
- 43:23Speaker 3: working with stitch Fix. And then Megababe's got new products
- 43:26Speaker 3: coming out summer twenty twenty. We are just we're we're
- 43:30Speaker 3: gonna spend money on marketing, which is the first which
- 43:33Speaker 3: we've never done before. So that's exciting. And I don't know,
- 43:37Speaker 3: everything's exciting. I got to make a twenty twenty plan.
- 43:39Speaker 2: It sounds like, let's do it, man.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm in.
- 43:41Speaker 2: We're going to storyboard for that when we're done.
- 43:43Speaker 1: After we talk about my dating life, what would you
- 43:45Speaker 1: say is one piece of advice that you would give
- 43:47Speaker 1: to someone who's struggling to accept themselves as a size
- 43:51Speaker 1: that they are.
- 43:53Speaker 3: I would say, so accepting the size that you are,
- 43:56Speaker 3: I think it's like looking at your whole journey as
- 43:59Speaker 3: like as like whole thing. So are you always just
- 44:02Speaker 3: up and down ten pounds and you're you are always
- 44:04Speaker 3: struggling to get that ten pounds off. Let's just settle
- 44:08Speaker 3: into the ten pounds and forget that, forget it, Let's
- 44:12Speaker 3: live life and just like nothing better happens to you
- 44:17Speaker 3: when the ten pounds are gone, right, Like you don't
- 44:19Speaker 3: get the job like that you that you want, or
- 44:22Speaker 3: like the guy doesn't show up because you're ten pounds in.
- 44:25Speaker 3: These are just like this imaginary weight struggle. And once
- 44:29Speaker 3: you release that, you have so much more brain space
- 44:32Speaker 3: to focus on things that make you happy.
- 44:35Speaker 1: I also have to ask you because I feel like
- 44:36Speaker 1: it's a really important conversation now in this era of
- 44:40Speaker 1: body of positivity, is also the conversation of like being
- 44:44Speaker 1: healthy and being body positive. I'm writing an essay for
- 44:47Speaker 1: a website about this for January, and I think obviously
- 44:50Speaker 1: there is a difference between like being healthy and being
- 44:53Speaker 1: of a certain size and being unhealthy and like being
- 44:55Speaker 1: okay with it. Sure, that's something that people probably come
- 44:58Speaker 1: to you with.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Actually, it's interesting because health we look at health and
- 45:02Speaker 3: we apply health to thin people only, right, we say
- 45:05Speaker 3: you look at you look at a girl who is
- 45:08Speaker 3: a size zero and doesn't eat food and smokes, and
- 45:10Speaker 3: you're like, Wow, she's thriving. So it's we have a
- 45:14Speaker 3: really preconceived notion of what health is myself right now.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Like I know that I'm not as healthy healthy as
- 45:21Speaker 3: I could be. And that's not like I don't look
- 45:24Speaker 3: at the number on the scale and think that even
- 45:25Speaker 3: though sure you could take an indicator from that, but
- 45:27Speaker 3: it's more like, I know I'm not working out. I
- 45:30Speaker 3: know I'm like not eating my like all the greens.
- 45:33Speaker 3: I can't like you know what I mean, Like, I
- 45:35Speaker 3: know I'm not in that zone. Yeah, and that is
- 45:38Speaker 3: that is a different conversation to me than I need
- 45:43Speaker 3: to be in this gene size. I'm not comfortable on
- 45:45Speaker 3: the beach. I'm going to the beach later this week,
- 45:47Speaker 3: and guess what, I'm gonna feel fucking great in my
- 45:48Speaker 3: swimsuit at the current size I am to day. Does
- 45:52Speaker 3: that mean I can't like tune up my health? Yeah, no,
- 45:55Speaker 3: I need to tune up my health.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I hear it.
- 45:57Speaker 3: And that's for that's that's not for gene size, that's
- 46:00Speaker 3: for like life.
- 46:02Speaker 1: We're in an era right now. Where everyone is open
- 46:05Speaker 1: to more so than maybe ever before, like accepting and
- 46:08Speaker 1: like seeing and like getting used to seeing bodies of
- 46:12Speaker 1: all sizes and that's so wonderful. But so many people
- 46:15Speaker 1: are just so critical of this idea that like okay,
- 46:18Speaker 1: but like is she healthy at this size?
- 46:21Speaker 3: We don't fucking know. We don't fucking know, that's the thing,
- 46:24Speaker 3: Like you don't know what she's doing, and like I
- 46:26Speaker 3: feel like I when I when when articles about me
- 46:29Speaker 3: go quote unquote viral, you there are comments about me.
- 46:33Speaker 3: I mean you would think that, like I have three eyes.
- 46:36Speaker 3: People can't believe how big I am, and I'm like,
- 46:39Speaker 3: what is this? People are insane? It's it's what we're
- 46:43Speaker 3: used to seeing in the media, and as soon as
- 46:45Speaker 3: anything varies from that, still we are very critical, especially women,
- 46:49Speaker 3: very critical to like judge that lady, but we don't
- 46:53Speaker 3: know anything about her.
- 46:54Speaker 1: And you mentioned the comments, So how have you managed
- 46:57Speaker 1: to handle that? As your social media following has exploit in.
- 47:00Speaker 3: So mean comments and trolls, They're not really on my page,
- 47:04Speaker 3: Like it's they just don't come to my page. I'm
- 47:06Speaker 3: a ninety five percent female following, Like I just am
- 47:09Speaker 3: not I'm not there for for dudes, and like, I
- 47:12Speaker 3: don't ladies who want to say bad stuff about me,
- 47:14Speaker 3: they just don't. When something goes on like a forum
- 47:19Speaker 3: like Yahoo or the Daily Mail or something like that,
- 47:23Speaker 3: that's when the comments come. Because you've got the strangers
- 47:26Speaker 3: who don't know who you are. They don't know, they
- 47:29Speaker 3: don't like they're not with you on your journey. They're
- 47:31Speaker 3: just like who is this? And and based on that alone,
- 47:36Speaker 3: the fact that like they can come and just like
- 47:38Speaker 3: shit on this body positive self acceptance, like love yourself
- 47:43Speaker 3: message is says so much about them and nothing about me.
- 47:48Speaker 3: So I don't take I don't take that stuff personally.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Last, but certainly not least.
- 47:54Speaker 1: You have an opportunity right now to offer the katie
