- 0:00Speaker 1: Shut up and sing. It's one more thing. I'm strong
- 0:03Speaker 1: and geddy, one more so we're about to play a
- 0:12Speaker 1: clip a John Cougar mellencamp uh talking at a concert.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Is this one of the concerts that he's doing with
- 0:19Speaker 1: Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan? Or is he on his
- 0:22Speaker 1: own here?
- 0:23Speaker 2: On his own here?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Okay, so he's touring with I know he's gonna be
- 0:27Speaker 1: I think at the Hollywood Bowl in LA which i'd
- 0:29Speaker 1: like to see Melonhead, Willie Nelson and the ancient Bob Dylan.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Of course, Bob Dylan's not ancient compared to Willie Nelson,
- 0:37Speaker 1: who just turned ninety. All right, it's gotta be something
- 0:41Speaker 1: when he sings. I was just reading the set list
- 0:43Speaker 1: on these concerts, and Willie sings among these classics. Funny,
- 0:46Speaker 1: how time slips away? Did it slip away? You've been
- 0:49Speaker 1: on ninety years. I don't think it slipped away. Something
- 0:52Speaker 1: happened to you when you were thirty. It was sixty
- 0:55Speaker 1: years ago. It didn't just slip away. But I thought
- 1:00Speaker 1: the set list would be interesting. It's not. Really. It's
- 1:03Speaker 1: pretty much the songs you expect. Melonhead sings, pink houses
- 1:07Speaker 1: and you know that sort of stuff.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I wonder why he's touring. A couple of years ago,
- 1:14Speaker 2: he said he had no interest in being a jukebox.
- 1:16Speaker 2: If people didn't particularly want to hear new music or
- 1:20Speaker 2: new versions of old songs, that's fine. He had no
- 1:22Speaker 2: interest in being a jukebox.
- 1:23Speaker 1: He did get a tooth knocked out by his kid,
- 1:25Speaker 1: like a year or so ago. Did that cause him
- 1:27Speaker 1: any financial difficulties? And his son got in a fistfight.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I'd imagine he can afford basic dentistry, but I don't know.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I have no idea of his financial wherewithal.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Why is will he doing it?
- 1:42Speaker 2: That's just what he does. I don't think he can
- 1:43Speaker 2: imagine any other life, right, And like Keith Richards the
- 1:47Speaker 2: Rolling Stones, why in the world would they play more shows,
- 1:51Speaker 2: much less launch a giant tour.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Well, I think Willie, that's what they do. Willie's paying
- 1:55Speaker 1: off his tax debts, right. I don't know if he
- 1:57Speaker 1: still has that. But that story was thirty years ago, Michael.
- 2:00Speaker 1: But he also he travels with his sons. I've watched
- 2:03Speaker 1: some of the videos from the bus, and his kids
- 2:05Speaker 1: are like sixty so, but he travels with his sons
- 2:07Speaker 1: who are in the band too, so it's probably probably
- 2:09Speaker 1: a pretty good time. I mean, what would be better
- 2:11Speaker 1: than that? Really? Actually, I can't think of anything that
- 2:13Speaker 1: would be better than that. So and then Bob Dylan.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I don't know what Bob Dylan's doing. He is exactly.
- 2:22Speaker 1: He doesn't need the money or the acclaim or the
- 2:25Speaker 1: Maybe he likes hotels. I don't know. But John Cougar
- 2:30Speaker 1: is on stage for a while, and do we need
- 2:32Speaker 1: to know anything else about that? Just then that No,
- 2:35Speaker 1: he starts, he's just talking to the crowd. Okay, here
- 2:37Speaker 1: we go, and she went.
- 2:40Speaker 3: It's just like he ready to be as smart like
- 2:43Speaker 3: when I'm talking to Jesus. Then he got no quiet.
- 2:53Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 2:54Speaker 3: I mean, Hey, Joe, find this guy and let me
- 3:02Speaker 3: see him after the show. Anyway, before I was so
- 3:09Speaker 3: rubina and rupted. Guys, I can stop this show right
- 3:17Speaker 3: now and just go right.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Since you've been so.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Wonderful, I'm gonna cut about ten songs out of the show.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Here we go. Then did Jack so much? That's a
- 3:36Speaker 1: tape of show's over? Did he actually leave?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Wow?
- 3:46Speaker 1: And he actually left? That's not cool.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Don't let an a hole and the show? So you
- 3:53Speaker 2: heard that the crowd was entirely on your side. One
- 3:57Speaker 2: guy so is into a story. Some guy'll play some music,
- 4:00Speaker 2: which is hurtful if you're telling a story that you
- 4:02Speaker 2: think is either funny or important or something like that.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Right, and but yeah, I think the rest of the
- 4:09Speaker 1: crowd was at least willing to listen to your story,
- 4:12Speaker 1: if not enthusiastic about it. Yeah, that was weeks.
- 4:15Speaker 2: No, it sounded like they were with him. They laughed
- 4:17Speaker 2: at the joke and everything. It was just fine.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And some of them even went ah hey at the
- 4:22Speaker 1: guy who interrupted him. So a lot of people did.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So then he plays like six bars of jack and
- 4:28Speaker 1: and leaves.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, he's old and bitter.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I d enough time for that. I have thought about
- 4:37Speaker 1: this a lot. So on Charlie Rose, which I miss
- 4:44Speaker 1: a lot, the TV show he had in the same week,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I think John Mellencamp and John Prine. If you don't
- 4:51Speaker 1: know Joe Pryne, he was a very old singer songwriter
- 4:55Speaker 1: who never had commercial success like John Mellencamp, but was
- 4:59Speaker 1: a hugely adored by people who liked music anyway. He
- 5:02Speaker 1: died COVID but had them on both that week, so
- 5:05Speaker 1: they're both super old and at the end of their careers.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And it struck me how John Prine had what I
- 5:13Speaker 1: hope I can have when I'm old, but I don't
- 5:14Speaker 1: think I can because I don't even have it now.
- 5:16Speaker 1: He just had, He just had, like a rye. This
- 5:19Speaker 1: is kind of funny, isn't it, view of getting older.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I mean, this is almost amusing what this is, like
- 5:25Speaker 1: the health problems and the this and the that, and
- 5:27Speaker 1: the kids and the marriage and just the way the
- 5:30Speaker 1: songs were like that too. But John Mellencamp was clearly
- 5:33Speaker 1: a bitter it went by too fast, sad, and I
- 5:40Speaker 1: relate to those feelings, but just you know, I wish
- 5:43Speaker 1: I wish I were still thirty, you know, that sort
- 5:46Speaker 1: of thing. And I thought those are There's two really
- 5:49Speaker 1: good examples, has nothing to do with being famous, of
- 5:52Speaker 1: how you approach getting older, and you either just accept
- 5:56Speaker 1: it and kind of enjoy it and marvel at its
- 6:02Speaker 1: everything that it's evolved, or be really bitter that you're
- 6:05Speaker 1: not thirty and cool anymore, like Mellencamp was. And I
- 6:07Speaker 1: just thought that was interesting, And I think you think
- 6:11Speaker 1: a little bit there.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I think. Well, let me start with this was
- 6:17Speaker 2: playing golf the other day and we saw some distance
- 6:20Speaker 2: away a mutual friend talked about him a little bit.
- 6:25Speaker 2: One of the most cheerful guys you've ever met. This
- 6:27Speaker 2: guy wakes up in the morning cheerful, he goes to
- 6:29Speaker 2: bed cheerful. He's just made like that. And it's an
- 6:32Speaker 2: amazing blessing. And I commented to my buddy, who also
- 6:37Speaker 2: has a more than one kid, I said, anybody who's
- 6:40Speaker 2: raised multiple kids knows you come out of the womb
- 6:42Speaker 2: like that, or you don't. I've always said that, And
- 6:46Speaker 2: this number is pulled out of my imagination that you
- 6:49Speaker 2: got maybe about fifteen twenty percent around the edges. You
- 6:52Speaker 2: can push yourself in this way or push yourself in
- 6:54Speaker 2: that way, but you are who you are. And I
- 6:57Speaker 2: just I don't know. Could John Mellencamp have ever been
- 7:02Speaker 2: John Prine in his old age?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Maybe?
- 7:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I don't know either. You're I think you're right about that.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And at fifteen and twenty percent, you could either go
- 7:18Speaker 2: fifteen percent more bitter and awful, yeah, or fifteen percent
- 7:22Speaker 2: more cheerful and optimistic, and that that makes a big
- 7:25Speaker 2: difference in your life. I'm not saying it's insignificant. I'm
- 7:28Speaker 2: just saying my buddy's name is Dan.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I was born annoyed.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I'm never going to be Dan, and I love the
- 7:37Speaker 2: guy and we're good friends. Actually, I think my cerbic
- 7:42Speaker 2: eye rolling view of the world is amusing to him
- 7:45Speaker 2: and blah blahlh whatever it works. The one thing I know,
- 7:48Speaker 2: and I try, I've tried to be honest about this
- 7:51Speaker 2: with myself.
- 7:52Speaker 1: All of us want, all of us attribute.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Our good qualities to choice and our bad qualities to genetics.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a strength of character, I know.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Yeah, all the good things about me are because I
- 8:08Speaker 2: chose to be that way, and I worked hard to.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Be that right, right. I gotta admit when I when
- 8:15Speaker 1: I was taking in the two different attitudes about growing
- 8:18Speaker 1: older and your and your your best days being behind you,
- 8:22Speaker 1: I related the emotions of John Mellencamp a lot more
- 8:26Speaker 1: than John bri I'd like to be like John Pryan,
- 8:28Speaker 1: but I feel in my head, in my heart more
- 8:31Speaker 1: like John Mellencamp for whatever reason, because I think I'm
- 8:34Speaker 1: born that way. I was. This is why I am.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And then there's the.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Question of epigenetics, which is one of my favorite things
- 8:42Speaker 2: I ever learned. You have your genetics, but then you've
- 8:45Speaker 2: got a bunch of things in your genes.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Try to end up with a half cat, half dog
- 8:48Speaker 1: sort of situation. Is that what that is?
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's right exactly. Yeah, yeah, uh no. It's
- 8:53Speaker 2: there are like triggers that you have genetically, and if
- 8:58Speaker 2: certain things happened to you or you run into them,
- 9:02Speaker 2: that those switches might be flipped. But if you don't
- 9:06Speaker 2: go through those things, they won't be If your environment
- 9:10Speaker 2: is you have good nutrition or whatever, it'll never manifest
- 9:15Speaker 2: itself itself.
- 9:16Speaker 1: It's not like.
- 9:17Speaker 2: The entirety of who you are is determined by your genetics.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Your experience in your life plays a role too, in
- 9:25Speaker 2: various ways. But you know, we're in the early days
- 9:28Speaker 2: of really understanding that stuff.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I just remember so they both sang songs that week,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and John Prine's song at that time. This is the
- 9:34Speaker 1: last album before he died. I think it was when
- 9:37Speaker 1: I Get to Heaven, And there's a line in there
- 9:39Speaker 1: something about I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the
- 9:41Speaker 1: tilta whirl, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long.
- 9:45Speaker 1: It's like looking back on the best parts of your
- 9:48Speaker 1: life and wanting to relive them or getting to smoke
- 9:50Speaker 1: cigarette again. And John Cooper had a line in his
- 9:53Speaker 1: song and all your best efforts don't amount to anything anymore,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and I thought, wow, that's just such two different views
- 9:59Speaker 1: of where you are at the end of your career.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And one of you is happy and one of you
- 10:05Speaker 1: is miserable. But like you said, maybe you can't control that.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I don't know. That's interesting acceptance is that how much
- 10:14Speaker 2: of that is inborn, your capacity to just accept your
- 10:18Speaker 2: life and it's reality.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I'm going to be a really bitter old person. I
- 10:21Speaker 1: think I'm pretty.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I can see that.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I will be quite self deprecating, but a bitter old person.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I might be changing my number.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 10:40Speaker 2: What makes you think I want to call you idiot?
- 10:42Speaker 2: Come on, now, that's that would have been funny.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Well, I guess that's it.
