- 0:00Charles Wesley was a a great hymn writer.
- 0:04Not just a preacher, but a but a hymn writer.
- 0:08He wrote over 6500 different hymns and one of them in
- 0:15particular deals with what it is we are discussing this morning.
- 0:22That hymn titled is Joyful, Joyful, We adore thee.
- 0:30In each stanza of that hymn, he talks about the joy, the
- 0:35rejoicing, the gladness that comes from the Lord.
- 0:42Listen to what he says, Joyful, joyful, we adore thee.
- 0:47God, a glory, Lord of love. Hearts unfold like flowers
- 0:50before thee. Opening to the sun above, melt
- 0:55the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the dark of doubt away.
- 0:59Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.
- 1:06All thy works, with joy surrounding earth and heaven
- 1:13reflect thy rays. Stars and angels sing around
- 1:16thee. Center of unbroken praise,
- 1:22Fields and forests, Vail and mountain, flowery Meadow,
- 1:25flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain.
- 1:29Call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving.
- 1:37Ever blessing, ever blessed wellspring of the joy of living
- 1:44ocean depth of happy rest Thou our Father, Christ, our brother,
- 1:49All who live and love are thine. Teach us how to love each other.
- 1:53Lift us to the joy. Divine mortals, Join the mighty
- 2:00chorus which the morning stars began.
- 2:03Love divine is reigning o'er us, Leading us with mercy's hand.
- 2:08Ever singing March we onward victors in the midst of strife.
- 2:12Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.
- 2:23He understood that rejoicing is the aspect of adoration.
- 2:32The model life is all about learning to adore the king.
- 2:38And so the model life is lived in, in adoration, and
- 2:42particularly in three ways, being joyful, rejoice always,
- 2:50being prayerful, pray without ceasing and being thankful for.
- 2:58And everything we are to give thanks for.
- 3:02This is God's will in Christ Jesus concerning you.
- 3:09What does it mean to be joyful? What does it mean to rejoice
- 3:13always? Paul was the master of
- 3:17rejoicing. No matter what the circumstance,
- 3:20no matter what the situation, there was a joy about his life.
- 3:25And I wonder how many of us today are able to rejoice
- 3:31always. You know, when situations arise
- 3:38and they are devastating, how is it you rejoice in times like
- 3:44that? Let's say you you heard that a
- 3:48loved one close to you just just died.
- 3:53How do you rejoice in that kind of time?
- 3:56Or the doctor comes back and says you have a terminal
- 4:00illness, you have not very long to live.
- 4:03Do you rejoice always in that situation?
- 4:08Or you, you have a child that rebels against your authority,
- 4:13runs away from home, not interested in following the God
- 4:17you serve. Do you rejoice always in that
- 4:20situation? You see, Paul, Paul was
- 4:25concerned that those in Thessalonica who had already
- 4:29rejoiced when they received the the gospel, First Thessalonians,
- 4:34one verse #6 amidst much tribulation.
- 4:39So he knew that rejoicing was a part of their lives.
- 4:46So he gives his command at the end of chapter 5.
- 4:49Rejoice always because he wants to never to forget that that the
- 4:54hallmark of Christianity in our adoration to God is to live a
- 4:59life rejoicing no matter what. And so last week we began to
- 5:08explain that to you. How is it you truly rejoice
- 5:11always? And so we gave you principle #1
- 5:14and that was to rest in His Providence that that God is in
- 5:22control of every situation, in every circumstance, and
- 5:27everything that happens in me to me, because Romans 1133 to 33
- 5:33six says that all things are from him and through him, and to
- 5:38him to God be the glory forever and ever.
- 5:43Amen. That's why Paul could say we
- 5:46know that all things will work together for good to those who
- 5:48love God and are called according to His purpose.
- 5:51Why? Because God has a plan, He has a
- 5:53purpose. And the Providence of God is
- 5:55working through every situation, every detail of my life, and
- 6:01therefore I can trust Him and rest in His Providence.
- 6:04Listen to what the psalmist said in Psalm 37, Psalm 37, verse #1
- 6:14do not fret, do not worry, do not be anxious, don't be be
- 6:22filled with anxiety. How many of you are fretting
- 6:28today because you're anxious about tomorrow when the Bible
- 6:34says take no thought of tomorrow?
- 6:37For each day has enough trouble of its own?
- 6:41But we're always thinking about tomorrow or next week or the
- 6:45next thing down the Pike, and God wants us to rest in his
- 6:48Providence and trust Him. So Psalmist says, do not fret
- 6:56because of evil doers. Be not envious toward
- 6:59wrongdoers, for they will wither quickly, light the grass and
- 7:05fade like the green herb. Instead, he says, trust in the
- 7:08Lord, do good, dwell in the land, and feed on the
- 7:13faithfulness of God. Your food is His faithfulness.
- 7:18Your food is His guarantee. Your sustenance centers around
- 7:24what God does for you every day. So feed on His faithfulness.
- 7:29Delight yourself in the Lord. He will give you the desires of
- 7:33your heart. Commit your way to the Lord.
- 7:35Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
- 7:37He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and
- 7:40your judgement as the noonday. Rest in the Lord.
- 7:45Wait patiently for Him. Then he repeats it.
- 7:52Do not fret, do not be anxious. Do not worry because of him who
- 8:00prospers in the way, because of the man who carries out wicked
- 8:04schemes. Cease from anger and forsake
- 8:10wrath. Do not fret because why?
- 8:19He says it leads only to evil doing whenever you worry,
- 8:27whenever you're anxious, whenever you fret, it's going to
- 8:34lead inevitably to something evil in your life.
- 8:39It's not leading you closer to the Lord, it's leading you
- 8:41further from the Lord. So the psalmist makes it very,
- 8:46very clear, do not fret, don't do this.
- 8:49Trust in the Lord, rest in his Providence.
- 8:51Trust what God's going to do. Wait patiently for him and He
- 8:56will give you the desires of your heart.
- 8:59Commit your way unto the Lord, resting in his Providence.
- 9:05So important. I love.
- 9:07And in Acts chapter 5, after the apostles had been flogged, you
- 9:14know what that means, don't you? When you're flogged, your, your,
- 9:17your, your whipped 39 different times.
- 9:24And the whips they use were devastating.
- 9:29And so it says the verse #40 of Acts 5 calling the apostles in.
- 9:37They flogged them, order them not to speak in the name of
- 9:41Jesus, and then release them. Just a very quick statement.
- 9:45Bottom in, beat him silly, then let him go.
- 9:51So they went on their way from the presence of the Council,
- 9:56rejoicing. Rejoicing that they had been
- 10:01considered worthy to suffer shame for his name.
- 10:07It wasn't that he felt good, but I feel great.
- 10:13Hit me again. Wasn't like that, but they had
- 10:17been been flogged because of what they had said in the name
- 10:23of Christ. And so it says.
- 10:27And every day in the temple and from house to house, they kept
- 10:33right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
- 10:38A little bit of flogging. Was it going to stop them from
- 10:43preaching the gospel? They just kept right on doing
- 10:47what God had called them to do, and they rejoiced in the midst
- 10:51of it. They rejoiced always.
- 10:56But so here's the point. Rest in His promises, and
- 10:59there's a Part B to that. Rest in His Providence.
- 11:02Excuse me. And the promises that go with
- 11:06it. Rest in His Providence and the
- 11:09promises that go with it. God's word is filled with
- 11:15promises. Listen to this Isaiah chapter
- 11:2143. God is speaking to Israel.
- 11:24He says in verse #1 But now thus says the Lord your creator, O
- 11:29Jacob, lets them know that, that, that that I created you.
- 11:33I I formed you, I put you together.
- 11:37I am the the master architect of the nation.
- 11:42God is the designer of Jacob, so he says, your creator, Jacob, I
- 11:53am the one who formed you of Israel.
- 11:56I formed you. I've done this.
- 12:00Do not fear, because I'm your creator.
- 12:07I am your designer. I am the master architect of the
- 12:11nation. I have a a plan, and the
- 12:16Providence of my plan will be fulfilled as I have designed it
- 12:19to be fulfilled. So therefore do not fear, for
- 12:26whatever comes your way, I am in charge of so he says, Do not
- 12:34fear, for I have redeemed you. I have purchased you.
- 12:39I called you out of slavery, out of Egyptian bondage.
- 12:46This is what I've done. I have called you by name.
- 12:51You are mine. You're my possession.
- 12:56You're possessed by me, the God of the universe, the creator of
- 13:00the world. They says this.
- 13:04When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.
- 13:13Not if you pass, but when you pass through the waters.
- 13:21Sometimes the waters begin to overflow.
- 13:25Sometimes the waters are deeper than we imagine.
- 13:29Sometimes the the, the, the waters have waves that rise way
- 13:35above our heads. Because when you pass through
- 13:39the waters, I will be with you and through the rivers, they
- 13:47will not overflow you. Then he says when you walk
- 13:57through the fire, not if you walk through the fire, but when
- 14:05you walk through the fire, notice they're not running
- 14:09through the fire. You ever been in a fire?
- 14:14Nobody walks out of the houses on fire.
- 14:17You're running out of the houses on fire.
- 14:20You're high tailing it out of there.
- 14:21You're gone. But notice He says when you walk
- 14:26through the fire, He says, you will not be scorched, nor will
- 14:39the flame burn you, for I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of
- 14:45Israel, your Savior. Then verse #5 He says, do not
- 14:53fear, for I am with you again, do not fear, do not fret, do not
- 15:08be anxious, do not be scared. I am with you.
- 15:15I'm your creator, O Jacob, I've chosen you.
- 15:21I will comfort you later he says in chapter 49 of Isaiah.
- 15:28These words, Isaiah 49 verse #14 but Zion said Zion is Israel.
- 15:36Zion is a place, of course, Mount Zion, but it's also a
- 15:39people in the Scriptures. And so Israel or Zion has said
- 15:44the Lord has forsaken me and the Lord has forgotten me.
- 15:48You've been there. You've said those kinds of
- 15:52things. You you have faced difficulties
- 15:56or hardships or, or painful experiences, and you're
- 16:00thinking, wait, wait a minute. Maybe the Lord stepped off the
- 16:03throne for a moment, or maybe the Lord blinked and didn't see
- 16:11my situation, or maybe the Lord was preoccupied with someone
- 16:16else, so much so that he could not see or understand my
- 16:21situation. We always get to the place
- 16:23where, Lord, have you forsaken me?
- 16:25Have you forgotten me? Yoohoo I'm here but God knows
- 16:30everything, you're his. So he says.
- 16:36Can a woman forget her nursing child and had no compassion on
- 16:40the son of her womb? Yes, yes, many women forget
- 16:45their nursing children, have no compassion on the son of their
- 16:49womb. Many children, many moms give
- 16:51their children away and walk away from them.
- 16:55It says even these may forget, but I will not forget you.
- 17:01Even a mother's love for her child, which is the the greatest
- 17:05bond in the world. A mother and her child is a by
- 17:14nature the strongest bond in the world.
- 17:20And even though a woman can forget our nursing child, God
- 17:26says I will never forget you, I won't do that he says behold, I
- 17:32have inscribed you on the palms of my hands.
- 17:38Your walls are continually before me.
- 17:44I know you like I know my hand. I see my hand every day.
- 17:49I know my I've inscribed you on the palms of my hands.
- 17:53You are written right there. How can I ever forget you?
- 17:59And therefore all your walls are continually before me.
- 18:05You see, when you rest in the Providence of God, you rest in
- 18:09His Providence and the promises that go with that Providence.
- 18:18So important. I could spend weeks here.
- 18:22I'm not going to do that, but I could because this is just so
- 18:26profound. The Providence of God in the
- 18:29working of God. The Bible is filled with how you
- 18:34begin to understand the workings of Almighty God in the lives of
- 18:39people. It's amazing.
- 18:42He's never out of control. God's, God's never up in heaven
- 18:47going wringing his hands thinking, man, I sure hope they
- 18:51make it through this, but I sure hope they don't say that.
- 18:57I sure hope things turn out for the better for them.
- 19:00God doesn't do that. God's in charge.
- 19:04He's in control of everything, and we just learn to rest in His
- 19:10providential control and the promises that go with it.
- 19:16And there are so many promises in the Scriptures, but we must
- 19:21move on. Gosh, time goes by so fast, so
- 19:26let's hurry. All right, Rest in His
- 19:28Providence and the promises that go with it #2 embrace His peace.
- 19:35Embrace His peace. Turn to 2nd Thessalonians
- 19:41chapter 3, Second Thessalonians chapter 3.
- 19:46Listen to what Paul says in a second letter to the
- 19:51Thessalonians. He says, now may the Lord of
- 19:54peace himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance.
- 20:01The Lord be with you all. Now may the Lord of peace.
- 20:09Continually grant you peace. Peace is a gift that God gives
- 20:19to his own. The wicked will never receive
- 20:22that gift. Isaiah says twice.
- 20:25There is no peace for the wicked.
- 20:30There isn't. The peace that God gives, He
- 20:35gives to his own. John 1427 My peace I give unto
- 20:39you, not as the world gives, but my peace I give unto you.
- 20:44I, I give to you the, the, the non fragile, non superficial,
- 20:50real, serene, calm life. I give you my life because I'm
- 20:59the God of peace. The Father is the one who
- 21:03provides peace, the Son purchased peace, the Spirit
- 21:10produces peace, and the Scriptures promote peace.
- 21:17That's why the Bible says in Psalm One 19165 Great peace have
- 21:21those who love thy law, and nothing causes them to stumble.
- 21:27Great peace have those who love thy law at the coming of the
- 21:34Messiah, peace on earth toward those with whom he is pleased.
- 21:43God grants peace to those with whom he is pleased.
- 21:45Who is that? Psalm 147 tells us that those
- 21:50who fear the Lord are those who please Him.
- 21:54So the only ones who receive the peace of God are those who fear
- 21:58God. He says May the God of peace
- 22:06continually grant you peace. In other words, it's a non
- 22:11interrupted kind of peace. May he continually do this on a
- 22:15regular basis. Grant you the peace that you
- 22:18need. You need to embrace this so
- 22:22important. You see, sin can can disrupt
- 22:27your peace. Disobedience can disrupt your
- 22:31peace. Rebellion can disrupt your
- 22:34peace, but that's you doing it, not God doing it, because He's
- 22:39granted you his peace. And so Isaiah 26 three says that
- 22:49I will keep him in peace. Peace whose mind is stayed or
- 22:58fixed or focused or steadfast on me, I will keep him.
- 23:05In perfect peace. You'll experience peace.
- 23:09Peace. There was no way for for the
- 23:12writer to describe the the overwhelming peace that God
- 23:16gives, so he just repeats it. The translator is called it
- 23:21perfect peace in Hebrew. It's peace.
- 23:24Peace because it's something that goes beyond anything you
- 23:28can ever imagine for those whose mind is stayed on thee.
- 23:35In fact, the Bible says in Colossians 316, let the peace of
- 23:38Christ rule in your heart. The word for rule means to to
- 23:47umpire, to call the shots. In other words, let the let the
- 23:53fact that you're at peace with God because of Christ, let the
- 24:00fact that you're at peace with God be the governing factor in
- 24:05every decision that you make. In other words, because we're on
- 24:08God's side, we need to realize that he's calling all the shots.
- 24:13So we subject ourselves to the one who calls all the shots.
- 24:20That's what letting the peace of Christ rule in your hearts mean.
- 24:26So Paul comes along and says, I want the the Lord of peace, the
- 24:32God of peace to continually grant you peace in every
- 24:39circumstance. That that's just in every
- 24:43circumstance, not in certain circumstances, but in every one
- 24:46of them. Meaning that there can be peace
- 24:49in every every issue in life, whether it be turmoil or
- 24:55tragedy, whether it be happiness or joy, whether it be a
- 25:01difficulty or depression. Peace is continually granted.
- 25:10But you need to embrace that peace, and you can only do that
- 25:15because you rest in the Providence of God and the
- 25:20promises that go with it. So he says the last phrase, the
- 25:31Lord be with you all. We'll see this.
- 25:37To our Third Point, not only do you rest in the Providence,
- 25:40Providence of God and the promises that go with it, not
- 25:44only do you embrace this peace, but #3 journey in His presence.
- 25:56You journey in his presence. They say, well, isn't God on the
- 26:01present? Isn't God everywhere at all
- 26:05times? Isn't God occupying the past,
- 26:10the present, and the future all at the same time?
- 26:14Isn't God eternal? Isn't God immutable?
- 26:17Isn't God everywhere? How?
- 26:19How can I journey outside the presence of God?
- 26:23Well, theologically you cannot, because God is on the presence.
- 26:29But practically, you can walk out on your own, do your own
- 26:34thing, make your own decisions as if God is not even present
- 26:40among you. We, we kind of do this all the
- 26:42time, right? We, we make decisions without
- 26:45ever consulting God. We make decisions about jobs, we
- 26:52make decisions about purchases. We make decisions about our
- 26:55family. We make decisions about all
- 26:57things in our life where we go to school without ever
- 27:00consulting God because we think we're smart enough to do that,
- 27:05that we can. We, we're autonomous and we're
- 27:07independent and we can make decisions.
- 27:09We don't need God to guide us. I'm smart enough to make this
- 27:12decision on my own. That's not journey, journeying
- 27:17in the presence of God, that's that's walking away doing my own
- 27:23thing. That's why the psalmist said in
- 27:26Psalm 42, these words, I love this, it's so precious.
- 27:32He says, why are you in despair, O my soul?
- 27:39So let me ask you that question. Why is your soul in despair
- 27:41today? Why?
- 27:44Why is your soul downcast today? Why is your soul depressed
- 27:51today? That's the question that
- 27:54Psalmist asks. Why?
- 27:57And why have you become disturbed within me?
- 28:00What is your soul disturbed? Hoping God for?
- 28:07I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence.
- 28:12Isn't that great? I will hope in God and I will I
- 28:18will praise him because he is present with me.
- 28:22It's it's the help of his presence.
- 28:26Turn back with me if you would, to the book of Exodus, the book
- 28:30of Exodus, the 33rd chapter. You'll remember these words,
- 28:37Exodus chapter 33, verse 12. Then Moses said to the Lord,
- 28:42See, you say to me, Bring up this people, but you yourself
- 28:46have not let me know whom you will send with me.
- 28:49Moreover, you have said, I have known you by name, and you have
- 28:53also found favor in my sight. Now, Now, therefore I pray you,
- 28:57if I have found favor in your sight, let me know your ways,
- 29:00that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight.
- 29:04Consider too that the nation is your people.
- 29:09These are your people, God. He says this and he said, my
- 29:16presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.
- 29:25God says to Moses, My presence will go with you, and I will
- 29:32give you rest. Now this is the words of Moses.
- 29:38They said to him, If your presence does not go with us, do
- 29:42not lead us up from here. We're not going anywhere without
- 29:48you, Lord. We're not making a step.
- 29:52We're not. We're not branching out to do
- 29:54anything unless you go with us because we can't do it on our
- 29:59own. That's a man who has learned to
- 30:02depend upon the the presence of Almighty God in his life.
- 30:07And Moses was a great leader. He was educated in the finest
- 30:11school system of his day. He was a powerful, strong man.
- 30:15When he slayed the Egyptian trying to convince the nation of
- 30:18Israel to follow him, he was nixed in line to be the Pharaoh.
- 30:23He was a great leader. He had all the external
- 30:26capabilities and opportunities before him, but he turned it all
- 30:31the way to follow the Lord. He forsook the riches of Egypt,
- 30:37he forsook fame in Egypt, that he might seek and follow the
- 30:42name of his God. And now at the end of his life
- 30:50he is saying, Lord, I'm not going anywhere unless you go
- 30:52with us. Read on.
- 30:57For how then can it be known that I have found favor in your
- 31:00sight? I and your people?
- 31:02Is it not by your going with us, Said we, I and your people may
- 31:11be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the
- 31:15face of the earth. What distinguishes you from
- 31:21everybody at work? What distinguishes you from
- 31:25everybody at school? What distinguishes you from
- 31:30everybody in your neighborhood? It's the presence of God with
- 31:34you. That's what it is, that there's
- 31:39something about your life, there's something about who you
- 31:42are that that just exudes the presence of God.
- 31:46You walk into the room and people, they smell the presence
- 31:51of God. It's everywhere.
- 31:55It overrides your Cologne and perfume.
- 31:58It over overrides the clothes that you wear.
- 32:01It's the presence of God among you.
- 32:06And Moses says, this is what's going to distinguish us from
- 32:08everybody else. We can't go anywhere, Lord,
- 32:12unless you are going with us. And that he says, the Lord said
- 32:17to Moses, I will also do this thing of which you have spoken,
- 32:23for you have found favor in my sight, and I've known you by
- 32:27name. This is so precious.
- 32:30I know you by name, Moses, you found favor.
- 32:34You've been graced in my sights. I'm going with you all the way
- 32:42journey in his presence. I just I can't emphasize this
- 32:49enough. It's called walking in the
- 32:51spirit. So you don't fulfill the lust of
- 32:52the flesh, right that that's Paul's way of saying it in
- 32:57Galatians and and Ephesians. Walk in the Spirit, walk in the
- 33:02presence of Almighty God and you'll be distinguished from
- 33:07everybody else because there's something unique and special
- 33:12about you. Note this.
- 33:16The Psalm was said in Psalm 16 verse #8 I have set the Lord
- 33:20continually before me because he is at my right hand.
- 33:25I should not be shaken. How do you know You journey in
- 33:29the presence of God? Because you'll continually place
- 33:33the Lord before you. He's at your right hand and you
- 33:38never fear. You're never shaken, you never
- 33:43stumble. Because God's at your right
- 33:46hand. He is continually before you.
- 33:49You're focused and fixed on Him. If I had time, I I would tell
- 33:56you that the Prince of God supports and sustains you in
- 34:01your service. Just read the book of Joshua.
- 34:03Read the book of Deuteronomy. Read the book of Matthew.
- 34:07When you're journeying God's, God's presence, he, he comforts
- 34:11you amidst your crises. All you have to do is read
- 34:15Paul's account in Acts 18 and Psalm 23 verse #4 that when you
- 34:19walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you'll fear no
- 34:22evil, for He is with you. He comforts you in your crisis.
- 34:27He sustains and supports you in your service.
- 34:31He strengthens you in your suffering.
- 34:34Only the Lord can do that. That's Deuteronomy 3327 and 2nd
- 34:38Corinthians 1 verses 3 and following.
- 34:40And then you realize that He alleviates your anxiety.
- 34:47He alleviates your anxiety. I'll have to read this one to
- 34:50you. Isaiah chapter 41, he says,
- 34:55verse #9 you whom I have taken from the ends of the earth and
- 34:59called from its remotest parts, and said to you, you are my
- 35:02servant. I have chosen you and not
- 35:04rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with
- 35:10you. Do not anxiously look about you,
- 35:13for I am your God. I will strengthen you.
- 35:15Surely I will help you. Surely I will uphold you with my
- 35:21righteous right hand, the presence of God.
- 35:27When you journey in this presence, He alleviates your
- 35:30anxiety, He comforts you and your crisis.
- 35:34He is the one who sustains and supports you in your service,
- 35:38and He is the one who strengthens you amidst your
- 35:42suffering. I like this one.
- 35:46Wish I had time for this. He eliminates your enemies.
- 35:51All you got to do is read first Samuel 17 story of David right.
- 35:57He went against Goliath with the Lord of hosts by his side, the
- 36:02Lord of armies. And Saul told David before he
- 36:07went, the Lord be with you, David.
- 36:14And that's kind of quite ironic because the same Lord would have
- 36:19been was Saul had Saul gone after Goliath.
- 36:21But you see, he was afraid, but David wasn't.
- 36:28He knew that the Lord would eliminate his enemy because he
- 36:33had already alleviated his anxiety.
- 36:37He'd already comforted amidst his crises.
- 36:41He knew that He would strengthen him in his suffering and support
- 36:45and sustain him in His service For the King.
- 36:49That's what it means to journey in His presence.
- 36:51Do you do that? You want to rejoice always Rest
- 36:58in His Providence and the promises that go with Him.
- 37:03Embrace His peace. Journey in His presence.
- 37:07Next number 4. Obey his precepts.
- 37:12Obey his precepts. Listen, there is no joy and
- 37:18disobedience. You can't rejoice when you
- 37:21disobey. You can only rejoice when you
- 37:25obey that. That's why the woman, some woman
- 37:29in the crowd, Jesus is walking by in Luke 11 says blessed is
- 37:35the womb that bore you and the breasts that nourished you.
- 37:40And Jesus stops and says, oh, On the contrary, blessed are all
- 37:46those who hear my word and obey my word.
- 37:53That's where the blessing comes, that that's why John 13 is so
- 37:57important. John 13 begins the, the evening
- 38:00of the last night of our Lord's life, John 13 through 17.
- 38:04And we get to our study of John. We'll spend we'll spend months
- 38:08in those chapters, John 13 to 17, because it's the last night
- 38:12of our Lord's life on earth and he begins that night.
- 38:14Remember, there's an argument that arises among among the
- 38:17disciples about who's the greatest in the Kingdom and, and
- 38:20and Jesus begins to get up and and tie his slaves apron around
- 38:23his his waist and and gets a wash basin and begins to wash
- 38:27the disciples feet. You know that story.
- 38:31And Peter said, what are you doing Lord?
- 38:33Well what I'm doing Peter is I'm I'm washing your feet.
- 38:37He says no, let me wash your feet.
- 38:39Christ says if I don't wash you, you have no part with me.
- 38:41Peter says throw the whole bucket of water on me then I
- 38:43want to be cleansed. Christ says you don't need a a
- 38:47cleansing you just need a, a washing because the wash
- 38:53disciples feet and what's all said and done.
- 38:56He says you've seen what I have done for you.
- 39:00I've set you an example. John 1317 And blessed are you,
- 39:07joy is yours when you do what I have done unto you.
- 39:14And people think, well, the joy must be in washing somebody
- 39:17else's feet. Are you kidding me?
- 39:19There's no joy in that. We don't want to wash your
- 39:23crusty toes and all that kind of stuff.
- 39:26There's no joy in that. That's, that's not what the, the
- 39:28Bible says. Well, where's the joy?
- 39:31The joy is that when you are suffering isolation and
- 39:36loneliness and nobody cares about you because the disciples
- 39:40didn't care about Jesus. They just argued about who was
- 39:42the greatest in the Kingdom. So Jesus says, you know, when
- 39:47nobody cares about you, when you're completely isolated and
- 39:50nobody's praying for you in all your suffering and no one's
- 39:55paying attention to the fact that you're going to die for the
- 39:59sins of man, know what you do? You serve your fellow man, you
- 40:07serve him. That's where the joy is.
- 40:11That's how you rejoice, always obeying the precepts of God.
- 40:15When it's the hardest to do so, when you don't want to do so,
- 40:20that's where the joy is. So you say I'm going to serve my
- 40:25fellow man when my fellow man could care less about my my
- 40:29future tomorrow, could care less about my physical condition,
- 40:33could care less about anything going on in my life.
- 40:37But in our narcissistic society, we are so consumed with
- 40:40ourselves we can't even look outside of the wash basin
- 40:44because all we can think of is me, me, me, me, me, me, me.
- 40:49And that's why you have no joy. That's why you can't rejoice
- 40:53always. It's all about you and God's
- 40:57program. It's all about Him and everybody
- 41:01else. So you rest.
- 41:05I know I'm late, but I'm going to finish this today.
- 41:09You rest in His Providence and the promises that go with Him.
- 41:16You embrace His peace, you journey in his presence, you
- 41:21obey his precepts, and then you identify with his plans and his
- 41:28purposes. Not your plans and purposes, his
- 41:33plans and purposes. You must identify with his
- 41:40plans. That That's why the Bible says
- 41:43in Romans 12, you present your body a living sacrifice wholly
- 41:47acceptable in the God, which is your only logical form of
- 41:50worship, that you may be able to prove what is that good and
- 41:55acceptable and perfect will of God.
- 41:57But but you, you must present your your life as a living
- 42:00sacrifice. That is see the problem with the
- 42:03living sacrifice is that you can jump off the altar whenever you
- 42:05want to, right. When things get a little hot,
- 42:09you jump off the altar. When the blade looks really
- 42:12sharp, you jump off the altar. But when you present yourself as
- 42:16a living sacrifice, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're
- 42:19seeking to please and, and honor the name of God because you want
- 42:25his will done in your life. So you have this scenario in
- 42:28Matthew chapter 16 where, where Jesus asks, who do men say that
- 42:33I am? And Peter makes that great
- 42:34confession now with the Christ, the Son of the living God, and,
- 42:37and, and Christ commence him for what he says.
- 42:41Flesh and bloods not reveal that to you my friend Simon, but my
- 42:45Father in heaven is revealed to you.
- 42:48Then you had that scenario where Christ begins then to talk to
- 42:51them about his crucifixion, his death, his beatings and how it
- 42:56rise again. And Peter says, oh, far be it
- 43:01from you, Lord. Peter began to rebuke him, says
- 43:05Can you imagine rebuking Jesus, Peter?
- 43:09Peter was so comfortable with Jesus, he felt like he could
- 43:11rebuke him, said Lord that that's not going to happen to
- 43:14you. What did Christ say?
- 43:18Get thee behind me, Satan, for you do not have in mind the
- 43:26plans and purposes of God. You see, Peter only had his
- 43:33plans and purposes in mind. He had his idea about the way
- 43:37the Messiah should be. He had his idea about the way
- 43:40Christianity should be. He had his idea about the way
- 43:43church should be. He had his idea about how he
- 43:47should walk with the Lord. He didn't have the Lord's idea
- 43:50in mind. The Lord's mission was to was to
- 43:53suffer and die and rise again. That was his mission.
- 44:00Peter didn't want that. He wanted something different
- 44:04because he thought his way, his plans, his purposes were better
- 44:09than Jesus's plans and purposes. You ever been there?
- 44:13Sure you have. Yeah.
- 44:16You you want to marry somebody, right?
- 44:18And they're not a believer. That's your plan.
- 44:21That's your purpose. And God says don't do that.
- 44:24I got my own plan. I got my own purpose.
- 44:27And God says don't do that. It's OK.
- 44:30I got this, Lord, don't worry about it.
- 44:32They'll get saved later down the road and they don't see what we
- 44:38we have our own plans and we think that they're right, but
- 44:43for the most part they're, they're wrong because they're
- 44:47not in line with what the Lord has said His word.
- 44:52So you must identify with his plans and his purposes.
- 44:56But you can only, only do that when you obey his precepts.
- 45:00And the reason you obey his precepts is because you embrace
- 45:02his peace. And the only way you embrace
- 45:04this peace is because you're resting in the province of God.
- 45:07And the promises that go with them make sense.
- 45:10Of course it does. Two more Consider, say again,
- 45:21I'm just, I'm just getting started.
- 45:24Consider his person. Consider his person Hebrews
- 45:34chapter 12. Therefore, since we have so
- 45:36great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside
- 45:39every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us,
- 45:42and let us run with endurance the race that I set before us,
- 45:44fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfector of faith,
- 45:49who for the joy set before Him endure the cross, despising the
- 45:53shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
- 45:56For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners
- 46:01against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose
- 46:05heart. You must consider Him His
- 46:11Person. He did what he did because of
- 46:15the joy that was set before him. You know, there's only one time
- 46:19in the New Testament that says that Jesus rejoiced only once,
- 46:26and that's in Luke's Gospel, the 10th chapter, when it says that
- 46:31Jesus rejoiced greatly. Why?
- 46:34Because He told his men that even though you got back from
- 46:38ministry and you saw great things happening, rejoice in
- 46:40this, that your names are written down in heaven.
- 46:42And then he says he rejoiced greatly, because His Father in
- 46:46heaven has hidden these things from the wise and the
- 46:50intelligent, but has offered them up to the infant, the
- 46:55lowly, that they might embrace the Messiah.
- 46:59The joy before Him was the salvation of lost souls.
- 47:05And so when you, when you have, when you consider the person of
- 47:08Christ, you're considering the joy that was before him, and the
- 47:12joy was the salvation of lost souls.
- 47:14You rejoice always when the salvation of lost souls is
- 47:19preeminent in your mind as it was in the mind of Christ.
- 47:25Rest in His Providence and the promises that go with them.
- 47:29Embraces peace. Journey in His presence.
- 47:36Obey His precepts. Identify with His plans and
- 47:40purposes, and then consider His person.
- 47:46Once you do that, you can finally enter His gates with
- 47:52praise. Psalm 100, which says these
- 47:59words. Shout joyfully to the Lord all
- 48:03the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness.
- 48:05Come before Him with joyful singing.
- 48:07Know that the Lord Himself is God.
- 48:10It is He who made us, and we, not ourselves.
- 48:13We are His people in the sheep of His pasture.
- 48:16Enter His gates with Thanksgiving, and His courts
- 48:20with praise. Give thanks to Him.
- 48:23Bless His name, for the Lord is good.
- 48:27His loving kindness is everlasting and it's
- 48:30faithfulness to all generations. You want to rejoice always,
- 48:40that's how you do it. R Rest in His presence and the
- 48:47promises with Him. E Embraces peace.
- 48:53J Journey in His presence. O obey his precepts, right.
- 49:03I identify with his plans and purposes.
- 49:09C Consider his person. E enter his gates with praise.
- 49:22You want to rejoice always. That's where it begins.
- 49:27And May God give us the grace to obey the command that says
- 49:34rejoice always, let's pray together.
- 49:40Father, we thank you for today, the opportunity you give us to
- 49:43look into the Word of God so much we did not even touch on
- 49:47today. And yet, Lord, we trust that the
- 49:51things that we have learned would be with us and grow us
- 49:56deep and our walk with the Lord. And so, Lord, I pray for every
- 50:01one of us in the room. And I don't know what's
- 50:05happening in families or workplaces or schools, in the
- 50:10individual lives of those who are here, but you do.
- 50:16And that's all that matters. You're with them.
- 50:22You've inscribed them on the palms of your hands.
- 50:25You know them intimately in every detail.
- 50:30May they embrace the peace that you give them because you give
- 50:34it to them continually. May they rest in the in the
- 50:38Providence of Almighty God, journey in your presence, obey
- 50:42your precepts, identify with your plans and purposes, and
- 50:48consider you the great God of the universe, that they might
- 50:54enter your gates with praise and Thanksgiving, shouting joyfully
- 51:02unto the name of our God. Pray this in the name of Jesus
- 51:06Christ, our coming King, Amen.
