- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, what is going on? This is Jake Hofer and
- 0:03Speaker 1: welcome to another episode of Route Fresh. It's October 7th.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And before we get into the episode, I'm going to
- 0:10Speaker 1: give you the quick whitetail weather forecast for the following
- 0:13Speaker 1: seven days. The big weather story this week is the
- 0:15Speaker 1: return of unusually heavy rain. warm October temperatures across a
- 0:20Speaker 1: large portion of the Midwest from Iowa and Minnesota through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and Ohio. Temperatures are running above normal with 70s widespread
- 0:28Speaker 1: in some locations pushing into the upper 70s and low 80s.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Wind across portions of the Midwest turns south to southwest
- 0:35Speaker 1: as the warmer air moves in before shifting more westerly
- 0:37Speaker 1: as we get into Wednesday. Pattern here remains relatively dry
- 0:42Speaker 1: across much of the Midwest with high pressure playing a
- 0:44Speaker 1: major role in limited widespread precipitation and the forecast silver
- 0:48Speaker 1: lining with all of this farmers should be able to
- 0:50Speaker 1: get in and get the crops out after having some
- 0:53Speaker 1: wet weather the last seven days further east cooler air
- 0:57Speaker 1: is working through portions of the great lakes and northeast
- 0:59Speaker 1: behind a frontal boundary creating a noticeable temperature contrast from
- 1:02Speaker 1: warmer conditions further west and overhead The moon continues to
- 1:06Speaker 1: get darker. We'll have a waning crescent this week as
- 1:08Speaker 1: we move towards the new moon on Saturday, October 10th.
- 1:12Speaker 1: That's your whitetail weather report for this week. And in

- 2:08Speaker 1: ranging from Missouri with Jack Houston. Scott Peasney from Michigan
- 2:13Speaker 1: who connected on a upper Michigan public land buck. And
- 2:16Speaker 1: we have Christian Babcock who shot a mountain Oklahoma deer.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So a wide variety of guests giving their insights and
- 2:24Speaker 1: providing some help for this upcoming seven days. My take,
- 2:28Speaker 1: weather's not that great. If you have a buck, it
- 2:30Speaker 1: might be worth trying, but I do believe better days
- 2:33Speaker 1: will be coming here with this next front. So I'm
- 2:36Speaker 1: spending time doing a little bit of scouting, moving some
- 2:38Speaker 1: cameras around, observing and trying to get prepared for this
- 2:41Speaker 1: next front. So I hope you guys enjoy this week's
- 2:43Speaker 1: episode of Rut Fresh presented by Moultrie. Let's go ahead
- 2:45Speaker 1: and jump right into it. All right, Jack, welcome to
- 2:54Speaker 1: this week's episode of Rut Fresh. We have Jack Houston
- 2:58Speaker 1: from Midwest Deer Surveys. How's it going?
- 3:00Speaker 2: It's going great, Jake. Excited to talk today and it's
- 3:04Speaker 2: almost mid-October. Fun time of year.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I know.
- 3:07Speaker 4: I know.
- 3:07Speaker 1: It's opening day's boom here, and now we're like, the
- 3:12Speaker 1: season just marches faster and faster each week from here
- 3:14Speaker 1: on out until, call it Thanksgiving or maybe even the
- 3:17Speaker 1: first week of December, but you're in Missouri. What have
- 3:21Speaker 1: you been seeing here? I know you hunted this past weekend.
- 3:23Speaker 1: What was going on in your neck of the woods
- 3:25Speaker 1: in Missouri?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Last Friday was unbelievable. We got that big temperature drop.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I mean, I saw four Four deer over four and
- 3:35Speaker 2: a half, all within 150 yards that night. A couple
- 3:40Speaker 2: we were going after and just couldn't close the deal,
- 3:42Speaker 2: but we were right where they were bedding, really where
- 3:47Speaker 2: we were hunting. I know that hillside, I mean, we
- 3:51Speaker 2: were within 300 or 400 yards, and I think even
- 3:54Speaker 2: with great weather, that's just such a huge key this
- 3:57Speaker 2: time of year.
- 3:57Speaker 1: You've got to be close. What were the deer eating
- 4:01Speaker 1: on Friday night?
- 4:03Speaker 2: So that's really interesting as well. We had a great
- 4:06Speaker 2: bean field. It's fully defoliated. And then we overseeded some
- 4:11Speaker 2: turnips in it that really didn't come up well, except
- 4:15Speaker 2: in a few spots where the beans really weren't there,
- 4:19Speaker 2: you know, in July and August. And all of those
- 4:21Speaker 2: deer were in the brassicas.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Beating the tops of the brassicas.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You got fully defoliated beans that I would think they
- 4:28Speaker 2: should be starting to kind of get back on, but
- 4:31Speaker 2: they had zero interest in them.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Interesting and so then this uh was it last night
- 4:36Speaker 1: you hunted and had you know you're hunting a specific
- 4:39Speaker 1: deer and his running mate was in there last night
- 4:41Speaker 1: was the same deal were they in the eating the
- 4:43Speaker 1: tops of brassicas.
- 4:45Speaker 2: No i wish i had good food plot plot setups
- 4:49Speaker 2: where i was uh hunting this guy but this was
- 4:51Speaker 2: a little inside corner uh had a pond right there
- 4:56Speaker 2: cut cornfield and really the reason i'm hunting there is
- 5:00Speaker 2: actually hunting on the ground it's just been getting trail
- 5:03Speaker 2: camera pictures got a little scrape there and just that's
- 5:07Speaker 2: kind of where he's been so well.
- 5:12Speaker 1: All right so tops of brassicas inside corners terrain features
- 5:16Speaker 1: scrapes rolling into uh call it october 7th to the
- 5:19Speaker 1: 14th what changes or doesn't change over these next seven
- 5:23Speaker 1: days with your strategy.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Bill Winky always says there's a little false rut once
- 5:29Speaker 2: you get to like the 13th, 14th, 15th, where you
- 5:32Speaker 2: can get a few does that come into estrus like
- 5:35Speaker 2: a month early. I feel like I've seen that once
- 5:39Speaker 2: or twice. I don't know how true it is, but
- 5:41Speaker 2: if he says it, it's got to be a little
- 5:43Speaker 2: bit of something.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Going on there.
- 5:45Speaker 2: So that's exciting. I mean, it looks like kind of
- 5:48Speaker 2: middle of next week, the weather gets into the 60s here.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You know, if you hunt weather... And you're close to
- 5:56Speaker 2: their bedding. Hunt those temperature drops. Good things are going
- 6:00Speaker 2: to happen.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. Which, you know, what's your take on, you know, mid-October,
- 6:07Speaker 1: this time frame right now, a lot of people in
- 6:09Speaker 1: the last two weeks of Rut Fresh, the chant has
- 6:12Speaker 1: been acorns. Acorns, acorns, acorns. What's your, I mean, do
- 6:17Speaker 1: you think, like what have you observed in knowing, I
- 6:22Speaker 1: don't know exactly where you're at, Missouri. I wish I did.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm just kidding. But, I mean, is that something that
- 6:28Speaker 1: you're accounting for? Or maybe if someone's like, man, I'm
- 6:31Speaker 1: not really getting much on camera right now, maybe they're
- 6:35Speaker 1: in the oaks. Or do you think it's not as
- 6:36Speaker 1: prevalent from your observations and where you're at?
- 6:42Speaker 2: I would say, you know, my best camera two weeks
- 6:45Speaker 2: ago was a big white oak. And the activity has
- 6:48Speaker 2: definitely died on that. Now, did it just run out
- 6:51Speaker 2: on that individual tree? You know, the deer I was
- 6:54Speaker 2: hunting on Friday I talked about, this is a big
- 6:58Speaker 2: old cattle farm, and so maybe half of it has
- 7:01Speaker 2: a lot of big timber and oaks, and the other
- 7:03Speaker 2: half is just old cattle pasture, locusts, stuff like that,
- 7:06Speaker 2: really no acorns. Those deer could have easily all been
- 7:10Speaker 2: in the woods, but they were out in this cattle
- 7:12Speaker 2: pasture stuff. They weren't eating acorns, and they totally could have.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I think there's big individual deer preference issues. on food
- 7:23Speaker 2: sources just like with us um but if if acorns
- 7:28Speaker 2: were that favorable for those guys they certainly wouldn't have
- 7:30Speaker 2: been where they were i don't i don't take i
- 7:33Speaker 2: don't hold uh you know i think every deer is
- 7:38Speaker 2: different you got to see what they're doing and go
- 7:41Speaker 2: hunt that.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah i think there's a lot of truth to that
- 7:45Speaker 1: and i think it's easy to easy to shoebox or
- 7:49Speaker 1: hamstring yourself for like i have to be hunting this
- 7:51Speaker 1: because of why information or whatever the, um, information where
- 7:56Speaker 1: you have to be very self-aware of what is going
- 7:59Speaker 1: on with where you're hunting and, um, what I'm curious
- 8:03Speaker 1: with your, your gut instinct here. If you had to
- 8:07Speaker 1: get into the psychology of a mature buck over the
- 8:09Speaker 1: next seven days for seven to the 14th, do you
- 8:12Speaker 1: think it's still just relatively bed to food and lay
- 8:16Speaker 1: down some signs? I would say so.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I mean, it's gradually going up, right? And then that
- 8:25Speaker 2: last week, October, just everything changes. But, you know, I'm
- 8:30Speaker 2: seeing more fighting on trail cameras. I think all that
- 8:35Speaker 2: stuff's just going to amp up. But I'm not seeing
- 8:38Speaker 2: them move a whole lot yet, even at night.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Today's the 5th, and I had first two, like,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I don't know, three- and a four-year-old sparring games. on
- 8:50Speaker 1: an edge of a food plot. And you're right, like
- 8:52Speaker 1: you can almost feel the testosterone rise in the woods
- 8:55Speaker 1: with these bucks. And what, another question for you with,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you do a ton of different research and you fly,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you survey farms and everything else. And I know right
- 9:05Speaker 1: now it's a hard time to survey with foliage up,
- 9:07Speaker 1: but is there any observations on just general deer behavior
- 9:12Speaker 1: for this like quote unquote October lull?
- 9:19Speaker 2: I mean, I have a lot of clients all scattered,
- 9:21Speaker 2: you know, throughout the country. And then the last week
- 9:24Speaker 2: I've gotten a lot of, a lot of big deer
- 9:26Speaker 2: sent to me. So, you know, dead big deer. So
- 9:28Speaker 2: they've been dropping, people are dialed in, the weather's been okay. And, um,
- 9:34Speaker 2: this is the time of year where you succeed if
- 9:35Speaker 2: you prepare during the off season a lot. And you
- 9:39Speaker 2: can't do that for every deer all the time. I'm,
- 9:43Speaker 2: you know, I'm kind of chasing one guy right now
- 9:45Speaker 2: that I wish I was more prepared for, but.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Uh, Yeah. Deer dropping. It's happening. Yeah. Which, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 1: kind of looking at the weather here briefly for, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 1: the 7th to the 14th you're right it does look
- 10:01Speaker 1: like closer to the 14th here there's you know the
- 10:06Speaker 1: 13th 14th looks like there's a little bit of a
- 10:08Speaker 1: weather front and it is eerie and and anyone that
- 10:11Speaker 1: likes to hunt deer you'll be driving down the road
- 10:14Speaker 1: middle of the day There's going to be some big
- 10:15Speaker 1: deer to die tonight. You watch the temperature on your
- 10:18Speaker 1: truck just go down, down, down. You're looking at the weather,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and it's like really oftentimes when the front comes in,
- 10:24Speaker 1: it's like, I don't know who's going to kill a
- 10:25Speaker 1: big deer tonight, but someone's going to kill a big
- 10:27Speaker 1: deer tonight. And I think next Tuesday, Wednesday, it looks
- 10:30Speaker 1: like it could be one of those days.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and I would encourage people to, you know, you
- 10:37Speaker 2: want to hunt a cold front, yeah, but if you're
- 10:40Speaker 2: really close to where they're bedding and they're on a
- 10:42Speaker 2: pretty consistent feed pattern, If it's 80 degrees one night,
- 10:46Speaker 2: they might just get up 20 minutes later and you
- 10:49Speaker 2: can still have a chance at them at dark. I
- 10:52Speaker 2: would let that, if you got the right wind and stuff,
- 10:55Speaker 2: I would still be out there. I know I'm going
- 10:57Speaker 2: to do that this week. The weather's not great, but
- 11:00Speaker 2: I'm still going. Probably every day other than Saturday.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Why Saturday? Too hot Saturday or you got plans? Too
- 11:09Speaker 1: hot Saturday. It looks 85.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It's a.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Little warm for me. Yeah, that's good insight. So get
- 11:17Speaker 1: tighter to bedding and know your window of opportunity might
- 11:19Speaker 1: be shorter. The distance of travel might be less. If
- 11:24Speaker 1: you're hunting almost every evening this week, are you going
- 11:28Speaker 1: to be hunting on the ground again, on the inside corner,
- 11:30Speaker 1: or are you going to be observing the defoliated beans
- 11:33Speaker 1: and tops of brassicas?
- 11:37Speaker 2: I hate hunting on the ground, but it works. I'll
- 11:42Speaker 2: be doing both. I'll be hopping around. If the wind's
- 11:45Speaker 2: right for one setup, I'll be there hunting one deer.
- 11:47Speaker 2: If it's not, I'll be somewhere else with somebody else
- 11:51Speaker 2: hunting another deer.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I like it.
- 11:53Speaker 2: One other thing I'd add, Jake, is this week, I
- 11:58Speaker 2: think it was Wednesday, I went and changed a bunch
- 12:02Speaker 2: of cameras, spread out some wheat seed before rain. All
- 12:05Speaker 2: this disturbance in a pretty low-cover farm. That guy daylighted.
- 12:11Speaker 2: The guy I'm hunting on Friday at 6 p.m. and
- 12:14Speaker 2: all those spots. So we think don't pressure deer. You
- 12:19Speaker 2: just got to be smart about it. You got to
- 12:20Speaker 2: go get what you got to get done done. But
- 12:24Speaker 2: all that disturbance and that guy was still right back there.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I think so if someone right now is like, man,
- 12:32Speaker 1: there's a few things I still need to get done.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I might be able to sneak out of work early
- 12:36Speaker 1: or Saturday is going to be super hot. Making some
- 12:39Speaker 1: of those midday trips. last-minute moves could prove to be,
- 12:43Speaker 1: you know, fruitful if it puts you in a position
- 12:47Speaker 1: when the next front rolls in or next opportunity rolls in.
- 12:49Speaker 1: So what you're saying is don't be scared to get
- 12:51Speaker 1: done what you need to get done, but be smart
- 12:53Speaker 1: and efficient about it.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I would do it 100% of the time, yeah.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah. And so, Jack, I wish you the best of luck,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and I anticipate some success later on this year. But
- 13:05Speaker 1: for everyone that is in Missouri or even the Midwest,
- 13:09Speaker 1: you have a recovery business and also a survey business.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So how can, tell us quickly what that is and
- 13:16Speaker 1: how they find you.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Midwestdeersurveys.com is the website. You can find me there, and
- 13:23Speaker 2: that's probably the best spot.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Awesome. Thank you so much, Jack. Good luck. Thanks, Jake.
- 13:29Speaker 1: All right, we got Scott Pisanee from Michigan who just
- 13:32Speaker 1: shot a Northwoods Michigan buck. How does it feel? Incredible.
- 13:38Speaker 6: First buck for me ever on opening day.
- 13:42Speaker 4: So it was a very, very special hunt.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Pretty, pretty cool. That's really neat. And so you have
- 13:49Speaker 1: a beautiful backdrop here behind you. You can undoubtedly in
- 13:52Speaker 1: the Northwoods here. Opening day, was it opening morning, opening evening?
- 13:57Speaker 1: What was the plan going into it?
- 14:00Speaker 6: Yeah, so it was opening evening.
- 14:01Speaker 4: We got a big rain system here in West Michigan
- 14:04Speaker 4: that pushed through.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Let's see.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Opening day was Thursday. So it would have been Wednesday
- 14:10Speaker 4: evening all night and basically all day on Thursday, our
- 14:15Speaker 4: opening day. So I didn't go out in the morning.
- 14:16Speaker 6: I mean, it was raining.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I hate missing any hunt on opening day. I like
- 14:20Speaker 4: to get out there in the mornings, even in October.
- 14:23Speaker 4: But in this case, I slept in through the rain
- 14:26Speaker 4: and just didn't have any camera activity all night long
- 14:30Speaker 4: into the morning. So I had a pretty good feeling
- 14:33Speaker 4: if there was going to be a break in the rain,
- 14:34Speaker 4: they'd be moving pretty good. In the evening, so I
- 14:38Speaker 4: jumped in a spot that I had kind of had
- 14:41Speaker 4: eyes on for the last few years. It's an acorn
- 14:44Speaker 4: flat that's between, well, between.
- 14:47Speaker 6: The lake right behind me and another swamp.
- 14:51Speaker 4: And then to the west of it, it has an
- 14:53Speaker 4: old clear cut, but it's still fairly thick with kind
- 14:56Speaker 4: of autumn olive, good cover. And I'd gone in there
- 15:00Speaker 4: last Sunday, put in a cell camera on a fresh scrape,
- 15:05Speaker 4: that was on an old two track, just a good
- 15:07Speaker 4: travel corridor that I know deer are using and just
- 15:10Speaker 4: a ton of fresh sign in there. Not necessarily buck sign,
- 15:13Speaker 4: but just deer sign in general and figured that would
- 15:17Speaker 4: be a good spot for a camera. And I, I
- 15:19Speaker 4: got this buck that I ended up shooting on opening
- 15:21Speaker 4: night a couple of times. He was, I mean, you know, for,
- 15:25Speaker 4: for up here on public land, that's as much of
- 15:27Speaker 4: a pattern as you're going to get on a deer.
- 15:28Speaker 4: If he's there two or three times in less than
- 15:30Speaker 4: a week, that's, that gets my interest big time. So, um,
- 15:35Speaker 4: I jumped in the saddle and of course, I'm sure
- 15:38Speaker 4: you've had this where you go in scout, you pick
- 15:40Speaker 4: a tree. You're like, Oh yeah, that's a great tree.
- 15:42Speaker 4: And then you get back out there. You're like, what
- 15:44Speaker 4: were you thinking? I mean, I picked a tree that
- 15:47Speaker 4: had very little cover. I'm on pins and needles the
- 15:49Speaker 4: entire hunt and ended up having at about seven 20,
- 15:54Speaker 4: which is like 30 some minutes before legal light ends.
- 15:58Speaker 6: But it was dark because it was still raining. It
- 16:01Speaker 6: was still drizzling.
- 16:02Speaker 4: So by seven 20, uh, when, when this buck showed
- 16:05Speaker 4: up kind of, um, pushing some fawns off of his acorns, uh,
- 16:10Speaker 4: he ended up pushing those fawns right back toward me where, uh,
- 16:14Speaker 4: where mom was standing. And I couldn't tell that it
- 16:16Speaker 4: was this buck, but I knew it was a good buck.
- 16:18Speaker 4: You know, I'm not a guy that hunts one buck exclusively.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I just saw that it was, he had a lot
- 16:23Speaker 4: of bone up top and, um, luckily I was able to,
- 16:27Speaker 4: to thread a shot through. He stopped in a great
- 16:29Speaker 4: spot for me and not a great spot for him.
- 16:33Speaker 1: That's super cool, man. That's a way to, way to
- 16:36Speaker 1: make it all come together in a short amount of time. And, uh,
- 16:39Speaker 1: you know, right after that weather front and rain, everyone
- 16:41Speaker 1: talks about it, the importance of that sit after, you know,
- 16:45Speaker 1: a weather front and you pre-scouted all the things, all
- 16:47Speaker 1: the things when a plan comes together, man, it's sweet
- 16:49Speaker 1: and it's awesome. And I think you have that deer
- 16:52Speaker 1: for everyone watching on YouTube. Um, you have a deer,
- 16:55Speaker 1: so you could, you give us a quick, uh, sneak
- 16:58Speaker 1: of this Michigan buck.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 6: So pretty, pretty cool.
- 17:02Speaker 4: I mean, you know, for, for up here, I've been
- 17:05Speaker 4: hunting up here on public land 15 years and my
- 17:08Speaker 4: uncle's more like 40. Um, this is, you know, this
- 17:11Speaker 4: is one of the better ones that we've, that we've
- 17:13Speaker 4: harvested in, in 40 years. And that definitive crab claw there,
- 17:18Speaker 4: I had a coworker name him, Mr.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Krabs.
- 17:19Speaker 4: I know that's probably been used a million times, but, um, yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 4: super cool to have a little, even though a short history,
- 17:26Speaker 4: just have a little bit of a history and actually
- 17:28Speaker 4: feel like I, I had a beat on, on a mature.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Buck and, and then have it come together was real special.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Man, that's what we're all chasing. And you were able
- 17:39Speaker 1: to accomplish that opening day, first sit of the year, which,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you know, the work in previous Intel of years, like
- 17:46Speaker 1: for anyone listening, like don't get discouraged because it all
- 17:48Speaker 1: came together from a long time, but you were able
- 17:50Speaker 1: to make it happen and for it to all to unfold.
- 17:55Speaker 1: That's super cool. And you guys have like an actual
- 17:57Speaker 1: traditional wall tent camp, right?
- 18:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yeah, so we have a wall tent with a wood burner.
- 18:05Speaker 4: We all pitch individual tents. Again, my uncles and I
- 18:09Speaker 4: have been doing this for, they've been doing it for
- 18:11Speaker 4: a long, long time. I've been doing it for 10
- 18:14Speaker 4: to 15 years up here. And yeah, traditional old school,
- 18:17Speaker 4: we call it Camp Two Fires up here in the
- 18:20Speaker 4: middle of the National Forest.
- 18:21Speaker 6: And there's no better place to be.
- 18:37Speaker 1: That's super cool. So imagine, which I guess technically you still,
- 18:40Speaker 1: you still have a tag from the sounds of it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: You know, looking here for the 7th to the 14th
- 18:45Speaker 1: of October, I know, I know you'll have to get
- 18:47Speaker 1: back to reality at some point, but imagine you're able
- 18:49Speaker 1: to stay for the next, you know, nine days, let's say.
- 18:52Speaker 1: What would be kind of your game plan for anyone
- 18:55Speaker 1: listening to give them a sense of direction over the next,
- 18:58Speaker 1: you know, call it seven days?
- 19:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's traditionally, this is a tough seven
- 19:03Speaker 4: days to hunt. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The
- 19:05Speaker 4: hunting pressure, is apparent already, just driving around, seeing a
- 19:09Speaker 4: lot of trucks, seeing a lot of guys, so it's
- 19:13Speaker 4: a tricky situation traditionally up here for that second week
- 19:17Speaker 4: of October, I think you have a good window early on,
- 19:22Speaker 4: but now I would say, you know, I'm definitely going
- 19:25Speaker 4: to want to be in an area with acorns, they're
- 19:26Speaker 4: still dropping, I don't know if you've been able to
- 19:28Speaker 4: hear through my phone audio, but they're still dropping up here,
- 19:31Speaker 4: and I was just hunting a tree, two or three
- 19:33Speaker 4: nights ago that still had green acorns on it.
- 19:35Speaker 6: So I think they're going to be dropping for another
- 19:37Speaker 6: few days.
- 19:38Speaker 4: So I'd definitely be somewhere where there's at least acorns
- 19:41Speaker 4: in your area. And I would be close to bedding.
- 19:44Speaker 4: I love clear cuts, you know, from maybe three years
- 19:48Speaker 4: to seven years. or somewhere in there depends it varies
- 19:52Speaker 4: but something that deer can see through a little bit
- 19:55Speaker 4: and walk through not so thick that they can't get
- 19:58Speaker 4: through it but areas where they're not going to be
- 20:02Speaker 4: seen is is probably something that i would key on
- 20:06Speaker 4: right now.
- 20:09Speaker 1: What um So you had a couple of yearlings that
- 20:11Speaker 1: came in and then you had that one buck. Um,
- 20:15Speaker 1: what else, who, I guess in camp, you have multiple
- 20:18Speaker 1: eyeballs and every night, I'm sure you guys are sharing
- 20:20Speaker 1: hunting stories and what you've seen. What has been, is
- 20:23Speaker 1: it pretty much has been a sole focus upon finding
- 20:26Speaker 1: acorns that are getting, getting ate in the evenings? Yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 1: You know, it's a variety.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Um, there, you know, some of my uncles have been
- 20:34Speaker 4: hunting the same spots for, for up to 40 years,
- 20:38Speaker 4: you know, and, And things change throughout those years. And
- 20:42Speaker 4: they've had some oaks near some of their best spots
- 20:46Speaker 4: for early season die. And we're not seeing as many
- 20:50Speaker 4: deer in those areas right now. You know, it's hit
- 20:57Speaker 4: or miss. It seems like the deer movement overall has
- 20:59Speaker 4: been slow. I've been out a couple more times. I
- 21:01Speaker 4: have not seen another deer since opening night.
- 21:04Speaker 3: And....
- 21:06Speaker 4: You know, some of it could be because opening day
- 21:08Speaker 4: fell on a Thursday, probably not as much pressure on
- 21:11Speaker 4: that Thursday, but come Friday, Saturday, Sunday, now, you know,
- 21:15Speaker 4: the deer are feeling that that's kind of speculation, but overall,
- 21:19Speaker 4: you know, camp as a whole has not, we're not
- 21:22Speaker 4: seeing deer running all over the place, but we are seeing, um,
- 21:26Speaker 4: another one of my uncles had, uh, Uh, probably a
- 21:30Speaker 4: two and a half year old, nice six point actually
- 21:32Speaker 4: kind of, kind of chasing a doe around. I know they'll, they'll,
- 21:35Speaker 4: you know, start messing around a little bit early if
- 21:37Speaker 4: it gets chilly in early October, but that's overall not,
- 21:42Speaker 4: not a ton of deer movement right now.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Got it. Looking at the weather for the next seven days, what,
- 21:49Speaker 1: what can you deduct from that?
- 21:51Speaker 4: Looks like there's, uh, some warmer temperatures or average to
- 21:55Speaker 4: warmer temperatures here for the next like four days. And
- 21:59Speaker 4: then after the weekend, we were going to see a
- 22:03Speaker 4: cold front hit. And I do think that that would
- 22:05Speaker 4: be a good day or two, like Monday, Tuesday. I
- 22:08Speaker 4: think we were talking that that's coming through. That could be,
- 22:12Speaker 4: that could be a good time. Again, I still think
- 22:14Speaker 4: you're going to need to be on public land up
- 22:16Speaker 4: here in West Michigan. I still think you're going to
- 22:18Speaker 4: need to be close to a bedding area. I don't
- 22:19Speaker 4: see a mature buck moving more than 200, maybe, maybe
- 22:22Speaker 4: 300 yards in legal light. So, If you have a
- 22:28Speaker 4: little bit of a pattern, if you're getting some pictures,
- 22:30Speaker 4: you're getting some cell cam data on a good trail
- 22:33Speaker 4: coming out of bedding, maybe to some acorns or some
- 22:36Speaker 4: type of oak flat, some type of food source, that
- 22:38Speaker 4: could be a good time to strike.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I like it. Any other sage advice for everyone out
- 22:45Speaker 1: there listening for the next seven days?
- 22:48Speaker 4: You know, maybe not for the next seven days, but
- 22:52Speaker 4: just a life in general thing.
- 22:55Speaker 6: I lost a friend.
- 22:56Speaker 4: On Saturday and, and, and our deer camp for, for
- 23:02Speaker 4: November is, uh, is going to be missing him. And
- 23:07Speaker 4: we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and we,
- 23:09Speaker 4: we put a lot of time and effort into trying
- 23:13Speaker 4: to fill a tag or trying to fill multiple tags
- 23:15Speaker 4: or trying to get after a mature buck. And you know, what,
- 23:20Speaker 4: what you realize is that it really isn't that important.
- 23:22Speaker 4: You know, what's important is making memories with, with your
- 23:25Speaker 4: loved ones, with your friends and family and, and.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Don't lose sight of that.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Make sure that you are really, you know, enjoying every season.
- 23:33Speaker 4: You don't know when your last season might be or,
- 23:37Speaker 4: or when your best hunting buddy might have his last season.
- 23:39Speaker 6: So enjoy it. And if you can, if you can
- 23:43Speaker 6: fill a tag, you know.
- 23:44Speaker 4: That's obviously special, but it's really about the people you
- 23:46Speaker 4: share that with that, that matters.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Sorry to hear, sorry to hear about your loss. That's
- 23:52Speaker 1: always tough. And I think there's a lot of, that's
- 23:55Speaker 1: timely advice. Cause you're right. We all get worked up
- 23:57Speaker 1: and we all, uh, we all get a little selfish. Uh,
- 24:00Speaker 1: anyone that says otherwise is lying. And I think that's
- 24:03Speaker 1: a very important message. So I appreciate you sharing that.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And once again, sorry to hear about that. Um, I
- 24:09Speaker 1: guess our takeaway here, but like, as far as, you know,
- 24:13Speaker 1: if someone wants to track you down and share words
- 24:15Speaker 1: of encouragement or anything like that, um, what is the
- 24:17Speaker 1: best way to do that?
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Shoot me a follow on Instagram. Shoot me a DM.
- 24:22Speaker 4: It's at the American wild or the underscore American underscore wild.
- 24:28Speaker 4: I keep it pretty light. You know, I don't take
- 24:30Speaker 4: things too seriously. I really do try to live by
- 24:33Speaker 4: what I just said. It's about the people. It's about
- 24:35Speaker 4: friends and family for me. It's about sharing stories, having fun.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Don't take your, your mistakes too seriously because success might
- 24:44Speaker 4: be falling right behind, you know, and, for me, maybe
- 24:49Speaker 4: most people would probably say it was a fluke. If
- 24:51Speaker 4: you look at my track record, I've screwed up way
- 24:54Speaker 4: more than I've had success. But every time you screw up,
- 24:58Speaker 4: you learn from it and it all can come together
- 25:01Speaker 4: in a flash. I was in my tree for like
- 25:04Speaker 4: an hour and a half and had filled a tag
- 25:06Speaker 4: on a beautiful Michigan public land box. So you're never
- 25:10Speaker 4: as far away from success as you might think.
- 25:12Speaker 6: Don't be too hard on yourself.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Have fun, laugh off the mistakes and That's kind of
- 25:17Speaker 4: what my Instagram is all about.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I love it. Well, congratulations once again. Thanks for hopping on.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Good luck the rest of the season, and certainly appreciate it.
- 25:26Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks, man. Love the show.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Love what Wired to Hunt and you're doing at Ruff Fresh.
- 25:31Speaker 4: You and Mark are two guys I definitely look up to,
- 25:34Speaker 4: so I'm thrilled to be on the show.
- 25:36Speaker 6: Thanks so much for having me.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Christian, welcome to Ruff Fresh. How's it going? Good, man.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Doing great.
- 25:42Speaker 5: I appreciate you having me on.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I have a feeling I know why you're
- 25:45Speaker 1: doing great. A lot of people say I'm doing good,
- 25:47Speaker 1: but you're doing great and for good reason. You connected
- 25:50Speaker 1: on a beautiful buck this past weekend. How does it feel?
- 25:54Speaker 5: Oh, fantastic, dude.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yeah. To have a great season, at least in my mind,
- 25:58Speaker 3: you got to start off early. You got to start
- 26:00Speaker 3: off hot. So I'm looking forward to the rest of
- 26:03Speaker 3: the season. It feels like I've opened up the curtains
- 26:06Speaker 3: and now we're just walking slowly through it.
- 26:08Speaker 5: So it's good.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 1: And you have the skullcap of the buck you shot
- 26:11Speaker 1: in Oklahoma, right?
- 26:12Speaker 2: Yep. All right.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Let's see it.
- 26:14Speaker 5: All right.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Beautiful. Not bad. Beautiful.
- 26:21Speaker 5: Beautiful. He's a framey sucker.
- 26:25Speaker 1: So give us the breakdown where, what was your setup
- 26:27Speaker 1: that evening? What, what was your gut feeling going into it?
- 26:30Speaker 1: Why were you there? All the fun stuff.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Yeah, man, we've had a, I got an, actually got
- 26:35Speaker 3: a piece of permission, um, property this last season. Um,
- 26:39Speaker 3: it's a, it's a good buddy who, who lives down in, uh,
- 26:42Speaker 3: in Western Oklahoma, but it's a really cool mountain piece.
- 26:44Speaker 3: And you hear mountains like people think that's like unfathomable
- 26:47Speaker 3: but it's the Wichita mountains down there there's some elk
- 26:50Speaker 3: habitat and a bunch of good whitetail stuff so we
- 26:53Speaker 3: were hunting a big old mountain pass in between you
- 26:56Speaker 3: know a couple hundred feet of elevation goes down into
- 26:59Speaker 3: some giant wheat fields kind of down in the bottom
- 27:01Speaker 3: my buddy hunted it that morning and he saw six
- 27:05Speaker 3: bucks and seven does kind of come through that pass
- 27:08Speaker 3: and it's so funny as the pictures on his video
- 27:10Speaker 3: on his phone of those whitetails traversing the mountain and
- 27:13Speaker 3: they were like walking up there like goats and stuff
- 27:15Speaker 3: it's crazy Um, so he passed a couple really good
- 27:19Speaker 3: four-year-olds that morning. And one of our other buddies had a, uh,
- 27:23Speaker 3: a wedding rehearsal that night. And, uh, he was like,
- 27:27Speaker 3: you know, you're going to kill a buck tonight, but
- 27:29Speaker 3: I think you should go where I went this morning.
- 27:31Speaker 3: I sat to the South of them on a food plot, uh,
- 27:34Speaker 3: that morning. And so went up in that pass and
- 27:36Speaker 3: he was like, dude, have your phone on you. Cause
- 27:38Speaker 3: you're going to kill one. And I was like, I
- 27:39Speaker 3: want to know when you kill one. And, uh, so
- 27:41Speaker 3: I sat there, uh, that night and I seen like
- 27:44Speaker 3: four does and about About 545, I look over, and
- 27:48Speaker 3: it's just this giant pass that dumps into some milo
- 27:51Speaker 3: on the far side, and there's weed on the other,
- 27:53Speaker 3: on the east side. And this buck comes out of
- 27:57Speaker 3: the bottom, jumps the neighbor's fence. He's in a bunch,
- 27:59Speaker 3: like kind of a mesquite flat down at the bottom.
- 28:01Speaker 3: And I just see that rat jump the fence. It's
- 28:04Speaker 3: like from 200 yards. It's like, yep, grab the bow.
- 28:07Speaker 5: He comes walking up that trail, and you know how
- 28:10Speaker 5: it is.
- 28:10Speaker 3: When you get to watch him come in for a
- 28:12Speaker 3: long ways, you're just like, I just need to look
- 28:14Speaker 3: the other direction.
- 28:15Speaker 2: This is like painful.
- 28:17Speaker 3: So he walks in, and he's pretty much directly below me.
- 28:20Speaker 3: He walks behind a cedar, and I'm like, as soon
- 28:23Speaker 3: as he gets behind that cedar, and I drew. And
- 28:25Speaker 3: he was just steady walking, and I was like, I
- 28:27Speaker 3: really don't like stopping him, but he was going to step.
- 28:30Speaker 5: In out of my lane.
- 28:31Speaker 3: And I was like, Matt, and looked up. That frame
- 28:35Speaker 3: turned at me. Eyes got about twice as big.
- 28:37Speaker 5: I was like, here we go.
- 28:37Speaker 3: And it was– gusting like 19 20 miles an hour
- 28:40Speaker 3: and my freaking pins all over him like just pulled
- 28:43Speaker 3: this shot and i pulled and hit him a little
- 28:45Speaker 3: bit high he ran 80 yards and stopped and kind
- 28:48Speaker 3: of looked back and i was loading up another arrow
- 28:51Speaker 3: and then by the time i looked back at him
- 28:52Speaker 3: again all four legs were up in the air and
- 28:54Speaker 3: i was just like oh.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Let's go so that you can't it was just picture
- 28:58Speaker 1: perfect yeah i love that that is awesome so was
- 29:01Speaker 1: he headed to a food source that evening or like
- 29:04Speaker 1: kind of you know There's.
- 29:06Speaker 5: A few things going on there. Yeah.
- 29:08Speaker 3: We've got some like feeders throughout the property. There's one
- 29:11Speaker 3: deeper in that pass. And then, like I said, down
- 29:14Speaker 3: in the bottom, there's some wheat that just got planted.
- 29:17Speaker 3: And then this past weekend, me and my buddy planted
- 29:20Speaker 3: like a wheat and chicory mix and radish.
- 29:23Speaker 5: And so there's some wheat that's starting to poke through
- 29:25Speaker 5: down in the bottom.
- 29:27Speaker 3: But we've kind of got some feeders throughout the property
- 29:29Speaker 3: as well. I mean, they're on some pretty natural movement paths.
- 29:32Speaker 3: But there's a few different reasons, I think. I think
- 29:34Speaker 3: he was probably going to hit some food Man, did
- 29:38Speaker 3: you think he'd come together like that?
- 29:40Speaker 5: No, absolutely not.
- 29:42Speaker 1: No, I'm a pessimist. You can't do that in deer hunting.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It's tough to be a pessimist. Man, that's super cool.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Were you nervous at all when you saw him at
- 29:52Speaker 1: 200 yards away? Were you concerned, like, is he going
- 29:54Speaker 1: to come within bow range? Or was it how the
- 29:56Speaker 1: terrain was? It was tight enough where it's like he's
- 29:58Speaker 1: going to come through here.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Man, this pass is fairly wide. Like it's probably 120
- 30:03Speaker 3: yards wide. And it kind of concerned me earlier because
- 30:06Speaker 3: I saw some does like halfway up the face of
- 30:09Speaker 3: that mountain. And they looked like they just popped out
- 30:11Speaker 3: of the mountain, like out of a freaking.
- 30:12Speaker 5: Hole behind these rocks. And I'm like, man, where did
- 30:15Speaker 5: they come from?
- 30:16Speaker 3: And so I had a doe walk right in front
- 30:19Speaker 3: of me and I had a north northeast wind. She
- 30:21Speaker 3: was about to catch my wind, but she worked back
- 30:24Speaker 3: that same trail that he came back towards me off
- 30:26Speaker 3: the neighbor. She had went into about 30 minutes before.
- 30:30Speaker 3: And as he was headed up that trail, it wide,
- 30:32Speaker 3: it was going to wide to go behind my cedar
- 30:35Speaker 3: or left to kind of follow, fall down into the
- 30:37Speaker 3: pass even more. And thank God he went left in
- 30:40Speaker 3: the bottom. Cause I was like, Oh no, I'm going
- 30:42Speaker 3: to have to shoot him at like 10 yards downwind.
- 30:44Speaker 3: I was like, there's no way this is going to happen.
- 30:46Speaker 3: And you're in a cedar that's four inches of diameter
- 30:49Speaker 3: and you got to cut it out to have a
- 30:51Speaker 3: good stand in there. And so it's, I was like,
- 30:53Speaker 3: there's no way this is going to come together, but
- 30:55Speaker 3: thankfully he took the right trail.
- 30:57Speaker 1: That's super cool. What, uh, So the tree you were
- 30:59Speaker 1: in was tiny. Oh yeah.
- 31:02Speaker 5: Up, up in the top. It was, it was probably
- 31:04Speaker 5: that big around.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:05Speaker 6: Was it shaken?
- 31:06Speaker 1: Was it shaken when, when you saw him? You had
- 31:09Speaker 1: the wind to cover your, your shakes. Uh huh.
- 31:12Speaker 5: No, for real. Yeah.
- 31:13Speaker 3: It was, I was only like eight feet off the ground.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Like it was not a big cedar, but it was
- 31:16Speaker 3: just in the perfect spot. And you're like, it's gotta
- 31:18Speaker 3: be right there. So, um, they had hung that stand,
- 31:21Speaker 3: my buddy and a couple of buddies earlier in the year,
- 31:23Speaker 3: but yeah, no, it was, it was perfect.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Well, I think there's some, some good insight in that.
- 31:28Speaker 1: So for anyone that's in similar terrain, which probably not
- 31:33Speaker 1: a ton of people, but I'm just curious, looking at
- 31:35Speaker 1: the weather and everything else over the next seven days,
- 31:38Speaker 1: the 7th to the 14th, what advice would you have
- 31:41Speaker 1: for someone that's listening to this and they're trying to
- 31:43Speaker 1: plan the upcoming weekend or maybe Friday or even early
- 31:47Speaker 1: next week? What do you tell them with the weather,
- 31:51Speaker 1: time of year, all these different things?
- 31:53Speaker 5: Set your expectations accordingly.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Um and we had some high 50s lows uh this
- 31:59Speaker 3: last week and that's that's very low for the south
- 32:03Speaker 3: right now i mean i was looking at it before
- 32:04Speaker 3: we got on this call and we're looking at highs
- 32:07Speaker 3: in the upper 80s some lows in the upper 60s
- 32:10Speaker 3: to low 70s so i just don't think you're going
- 32:12Speaker 3: to see a whole lot of daylight movement there's a
- 32:14Speaker 3: lot of things changing right now there's some crops coming
- 32:16Speaker 3: out if where we're hunting there's a lot of winter
- 32:18Speaker 3: wheat going in so it's starting to kind of poke
- 32:21Speaker 3: and so we actually went and hung a trail camera
- 32:25Speaker 3: on another bedding area location. This is right off the
- 32:27Speaker 3: edge of a big destination wheat fields, but I think
- 32:31Speaker 3: you gotta be tight to bedding right now. And you're
- 32:34Speaker 3: probably going to have some light and variable winds, which
- 32:36Speaker 3: is super annoying. And I just don't think they're going
- 32:39Speaker 3: to move a whole lot. So you're gonna have to
- 32:41Speaker 3: be tight to where they're bedding. I think they're going
- 32:42Speaker 3: to be moving really close to daylight and dark. I mean,
- 32:45Speaker 3: it's 86, 87 degrees. That's not, that's not the weather
- 32:49Speaker 3: you dream of as a bow hunter. That's when you,
- 32:51Speaker 3: cancel your PTO request and go back to work. Yeah.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Yeah. So, you know, with that being said on a
- 32:57Speaker 1: scale one to 10, where do you, where do you
- 32:59Speaker 1: put it? 10 being the absolute best week of the year.
- 33:01Speaker 1: One being not, not excited at all.
- 33:05Speaker 5: It's going to be in that two or three range.
- 33:07Speaker 5: It's going to be pretty low.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:09Speaker 5: It could happen, but I wouldn't be pumped about it.
- 33:12Speaker 1: For people who have time, what would you say? Would
- 33:15Speaker 1: you say go hunt, tight to bedding hope for the
- 33:17Speaker 1: best would it be to scout would it be to
- 33:18Speaker 1: move around cameras what do you think would be the
- 33:21Speaker 1: best use of time over the next seven days.
- 33:22Speaker 3: I'd be looking for some for fresh shine um and
- 33:26Speaker 3: and stuff that's tight in bedding um so you're seeing
- 33:30Speaker 3: some scrapes popping up that buck had a bunch of
- 33:32Speaker 3: cedar in his brow so they're they're obviously laying down
- 33:35Speaker 3: rubs um and and that sort of thing and like
- 33:37Speaker 3: i said there's a lot of food changing like down
- 33:39Speaker 3: here and i shot that buck in oklahoma but in
- 33:41Speaker 3: central texas i got six live oaks in my backyard
- 33:43Speaker 3: and they're just raining right now Um, I'm sure some
- 33:47Speaker 3: white Oaks, post Oaks, that sort of stuff are, are
- 33:49Speaker 3: dropping as well. So I'd be looking for, you know,
- 33:52Speaker 3: food source sign, but all of that tight to bedding.
- 33:55Speaker 3: If I found sign that was 500 yards off of
- 33:58Speaker 3: bedding area, I wouldn't even put any pain in mind
- 34:00Speaker 3: to it at this point. He's not going to get
- 34:02Speaker 3: there before dark. So I'd be looking for fresh sign
- 34:04Speaker 3: near bedding probably or food.
- 34:06Speaker 1: I think that's fair. Anything else that you can think of?
- 34:09Speaker 1: I mean, we're, it's like, um, October low is, uh, it's, uh,
- 34:15Speaker 1: a very combative statement. Like some people are like, ah,
- 34:18Speaker 1: you know, it's, it's, you know, you can still kill them.
- 34:21Speaker 1: And there's research that shows that activity only gets better
- 34:23Speaker 1: throughout October. And then there's other people with a lot
- 34:25Speaker 1: of experience and maybe even a touch of gray hair that, uh,
- 34:28Speaker 1: say good days are coming. Uh, just, just be patient.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Where do you fall in that camp?
- 34:34Speaker 3: I don't call it the October law. I call it
- 34:35Speaker 3: the October hot. I mean, if it's hot, I'm not,
- 34:38Speaker 3: I'm not too excited about the hunting. If it was
- 34:41Speaker 3: October 12th and it was, a 50 degree cold front.
- 34:43Speaker 3: I don't care what they say about GPS collars or
- 34:45Speaker 3: the lull. I'm going to be in a tree and
- 34:47Speaker 3: I expect to see some deer movement, but all weather dependent, man. Um,
- 34:52Speaker 3: as there, I just think it's 86 degrees is a
- 34:55Speaker 3: tough time to be a deer moving around. So I wouldn't,
- 34:59Speaker 3: I just, with the weather, I wouldn't be worried about
- 35:02Speaker 3: the lull, but, uh, I think you're going to see some,
- 35:04Speaker 3: if you believe in the lull, you're going to see
- 35:05Speaker 3: some lull type movement in the next seven days. Probably
- 35:08Speaker 3: cameras are probably going to die.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Um, so yeah.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Well, I like it. Well, congratulations once again, Christian. And
- 35:15Speaker 1: if people want to follow along, you have a podcast,
